NSE SIB’s Outstanding Scientists BY DR. ANNETTE WEISSMAN Every year our students learn the scientific process by conducting their own experiments and presenting their projects to their classes. Teachers then select the top projects to present at the school’s annual Science Fair. These projects are then judged and the very best ones are entered into the South Florida Regional Science Fair. The NSE SIB K-8 SECME Club participates in their annual competitions on the same day as the Science Fair. I am so proud to announce the results of the Regional Fair and SECME events to our community. Ms. Aguilar, Chairperson of Math and Science, reported that in the elementary division our four science fair finalists represented our school with great pride. All 4 students received 1st place gold medals at the MDCPS Regional Science and Engineering Fair. We congratulate the following students and teachers for a job well done.

BY INNA KARTUNOVA
MiniFlow, Florida Licensing on Wheels program resumes its service in Sunny Isles Beach on Friday, March 8, 2013, 9:30 am–2:30 pm, at the City of Sunny Isles Beach Government Center, 18070 Collins Avenue. MiniFlow - the mobile Florida Driver License and Photo ID renewal service is provided by Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. In the past few years hundreds of Sunny Isles Beach residents, both full-time and seasonal, used this service to renew their driver licenses and photo ID cards without having to make an advance appointment and travel out of town to the DMV office. MiniFlow has been designed to provide convenient mobile service to such high profile locations
as office complexes, schools, hospitals, resort sites, and other areas where a concentrated number of customers are located. On a scheduled date, two compact updated portable stations will be rolled into the facility and set up as a complete driver license renewal office. If you need to renew your expired (or about to be expired) Driver License, or a Photo ID Card, or if you have your address changed, use this convenient service and remember to bring all the required documents for the renewal. * Please see a complete list of services and corresponding fees. Note: Fees are subject to change. PLEASE NOTE: NO Driving or Written Tests are available through this mobile service. Pictures are taken during the renewal service. Pay attention to specific document
requirements before you come to renew your Driver License or Photo ID. Since this is a mobile service, they are very particular about the submitted forms of proof for identification, SS# and residential address. Original documents and two (2) proofs of residency are required for all services. Students in Mrs. Tania Gordon’s 2nd grade class celebrated the joy of reading and learning in honor of “Literacy Week, Florida 2013.” In Mrs. Gordon’s class, the 2nd grade students participate in the school’s Dual Language Program, where they are given the opportunity to learn to read in both English and Spanish, and are taught literacy and content instruction in both languages. On January 24, the students were treated to surprise guests, Mayor Norman S. Edelcup and Commissioner Jeanette Gatto of Sunny Isles Beach, alongside Principal Luis Bello who was also in attendance. Mayor Edelcup read a wonderful story about the importance of staying safe, which captivated the students’ attention. Walking 4 Friendship: Going the extra mile Publisher
BY GRANT MILLER
My brother Michael and I were among the more than 1,000 children, teens, parents, grandparents and supporters who walked in the fourth annual Walking 4 Friendship on Sunday, Feb. 10. The 3K Walk and Carnival benefited the Friendship Circle, a group that offers amazing programs for children with special needs. It was so rewarding to see the happy faces of the children and families whose lives are touched by the activities and programs of the Friendship Circle, and the many teenage volunteers who are the lifeblood of the program’s success. This year’s walk was bigger and better than ever. Hats is off to Rabbi Yossi Harlig, Nechama Harlig and Heather Utset for organizing this heartwarming annual event that brings the community together to benefit such a wonderful cause.
It was great to see several local organizations supporting this year’s efforts with sponsorship tables. It was fun to watch the children enjoying carnival rides and crafts. And, we all enjoyed the live entertainment on stage. There was a rousing martial arts demonstration by Kia Kidz. The barbershop quartet style-group, the Singing Miamians of Pinecrest, was a big hit with the crowd. And, the children of the Friendship Circle’s guitar program, along with many others, gave memorable performances. Honorary volunteer Alexis Greenberg, a young adult with autism, joined Nechama and this year’s top fundraiser, Joe Roisman of Perry Ellis International, to cut the ribbon and kick off the event. It truly was a powerful moment. Michael and I want to thank everyone who supported us in our efforts to raise money for the Friendship Circle. The money raised is crucial to continuing this empowering program that makes a difference in the lives of children with special needs and their families. For more information about the Friendship Circle program, call the office at 305-234-5654.

From Musical Performances to Bus Trips, SIB Seniors Shine BY DENNIS STUBBOLO, CHAIRMAN & ALAYNE YEASH, COMMUNICATIONS COORDINATOR
The SIB Social Seniors gathered on Thursday January 17, 2013 at Pelican Park Community Center to enjoy another great event. Chairman Dennis Stubbolo began by introducing Laura Hoffman of Five Star Premier Residence of Hollywood, who gave a presentation to our members on the benefits of living in an assisted living facility. Next was the hi-light of the afternoon, a virtuoso performance by the Dynamic Duo of Eddy and Michael. Eddy Shraybman is a Concert Violinist and Michael Bendoym is a Concert Pianist. As a surprise to all, they brought with them a beautiful Russian singer that brought the audience to a great ovation of cheering for all of them. A great time was had by all and the music was just magnificent. After the concert, Italian food from Sbarro’s was served. For those of you who haven’t attended our shows, come out and see what all the fun is all about by calling for information. Like we also say, this was just another magnificent day in paradise enjoyed by all who came out to see the show. Our group is on a mission to enhance the quality of life for the Social Seniors in our community by offering events for them to attend. We feel that we contribute to our city becoming a great place to live, work and play. In the February 2013 Aventura Magazine, Kevin Maloney of Property Markets Group (PMG) a real estate development company said that, “…the good news for Hollywood Florida is that because of Sunny Isles Beach, Hollywood has become an emerging market.” So as you can see, we even help the surrounding cities become a better place to live. We want to thank all our members for the support they give us by attending our events and trips. We have had a very successful year so far, so let’s keep it going. The SIB Social Seniors group had another fabulous bus trip on Sunday January 27, 2013. The trip started with a, “Good Morning to everyone. This is your Captain speaking and today we will use first names on this trip, like a family outing. My name is Dennis and my Co-Captain is Alphonso who will be doing all the driving today. My lieutenants are Roz and my wife Diane and the city employee Marie (who all did an exceptional job in helping me). I would like everyone else to sit back and just enjoy this trip today.” We traveled from SIB Government Center directly to Versailles Restaurant for a delicious brunch in our very own room.

She welcomed every one and thanked all for electing her to another term as our U.S. Representative in Congress. Dennis gave thanks to the small army of volunteers and city personnel who helped pull a show like this together, for the pleasure of our residents. It takes a lot of dedicated people to help run events that are the envy of all the cities around us. With the formalities complete, it was time for the One and Only Biana Pinchuk “Live in Concert”. She is our City’s very own special prodigy, a gifted 10 year old, future star of our Universe. Her voice is big and powerful and at the same time has a musical operatic tone. She sang and played the violin to 14 of the most beautiful operatic and Broadway tunes of all times. Biana wrote and performed her new original song “River of Musical dreams”. At the end of the show, her parents and grandparents came up on the stage to cheering and applause from the audience. Biana will be doing a five city tour in the future and she is definitely not one to be missed. This was a performance that we will remember for a very long time. After the show, finger foods and coffee were served to complete another magnificent day in paradise enjoyed by all who came out to see this very special show. For detailed information about future events call Chairman Dennis Stubbolo 305206-9459 or Former Commissioner Roslyn Brezin 305-949-1522. After brunch we headed over to Pinecrest Gardens to see the 10th Annual Fine Arts Festival and Farmers Market. Then after we all walked around the fair, we got back on the bus to travel to our tour of the magnificent Biltmore Hotel. We found out the Biltmore Hotel is the 1926 Crown Jewel of Coral Gables. The Biltmore is an elegant Florida Hotel, whose halls echo with the history of one of the most fashionable resorts in the country during the 1920 and 1930’s. It offers a luxurious location, spacious accommodations, spa, pool, meeting rooms and superior dining. The Biltmore’s landmark swimming pool is the largest hotel pool in the
Continental United States. It is a 700,000 gallon, 23,000 square foot pool. It is truly a thing of lasting beauty. At the conclusion of the day, it was agreed that everyone aboard had a great time and are looking forward to many more trips in the future. The SIB Social Seniors brought us another magnificent quality musical show on February 1, 2013 in our very own Norman S. Edelcup SIB K-8 School cafeteria. We had over 150 adoring fans clearly there to see the one and only Biana! Chairman Dennis Stubbolo welcomed everyone to this special program and asked Sunny Isles Beach Mayor Norman S.

The time is Now to stop the violence BY DEBBIE WASSERMAN SCHULTZ
Since 1968, more than 400,000 Americans have been killed with guns. Each day, an average of 34 Americans will die as a result of gun violence. This is totally unacceptable and it is time for a national conversation about the astronomical gun violence in the U.S. and how we can curb this terrible problem. The devastating events last month in Newtown, Connecticut have spurred a national debate about our existing gun laws and mental health care system. First as a state legislator and now as a Congresswoman — and as a parent – I’ve been an advocate for sensible gun safety measures throughout my entire career. That’s why I’ve started a series of roundtable discussions with local officials, law enforcement agencies, gun owners, hunters, advocacy organizations, and victims of gun violence, so that I can hear directly from South Floridians about what’s happening right here in our community. In the coming months I plan to host more such discussions to hear ideas for moving forward toward real progress on this issue. In Washington, I’ve been part of the Gun Violence
Prevention Task Force, and over the last couple of months we have met with people on both sides of the aisle and all sides of the issue to develop a comprehensive set of policy principles that respect the Constitution’s second amendment and will make our schools, neighborhoods, and communities safer. We will continue to meet with our constituents across the
country to help ensure all voices are heard in this important national discussion. As my dear friend Gabby Giffords said at a recent Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, “Violence is a big problem. Too many children are dying. We must do something. It will be hard, but the time is now.” We must heed Gabby’s words and rise to the occasion to find common-sense solutions for curbing gun violence in our country. While there is no one action we can take that will ever prevent all gun violence, I think that we simply must find some common ground in order to move forward on sensible measures that can help prevent future tragedies. We owe it to the victims of gun violence to make it possible for all of us to be safe in our communities. I am proud to be an advocate for the people of South Florida, and my office is open to you. You can reach us in Pembroke Pines at 954-437-3936, in Aventura at 305936-5724 and in Washington, DC at 202-225-7931. I’m also available online at http://wassermanschultz.house.gov, where you can sign up for my electronic newsletter, and on Facebook at RepDWS where you can stay up-to-date on what I’m doing for South Florida.

Naked Beauty
BY RABBI YISRAEL BARON Imagine looking down at a large marble stone in its natural state, never cut from the earth, not yet trimmed or polished. Now imagine this stone, still in its raw state, being used as a primitive rough floor of a building that was built on top of it. But then, in order to protect people from tripping on rough bumps in the marble stone, the decision was made to apply a layer of cement right on top of it. Then, shiny linoleum tiles were used as a finishing touch to give it some “elegance.” Oh, and then a fancy border was added and a coat of wax was put on top of that to give it an extra shine. Does that make sense? What’s wrong with this story? I can hear you shouting, “Hey stupid! Why not take advantage of the marble stone floor that was there to begin with?” Granted, it takes more work to cut and shine marble than to lay down linoleum, but the work is well worth it. I am not just referring to the sheer beauty and elegance of the finished product. I am also referring to the naked innocence of it. Here is a floor that is genuine and unique, in contrast with the linoleum which is only a veneer, a cover over the less-appealing reality of
the cement underneath it. I ask myself: How often do I superimpose upon my character all sorts of veneers, in order to avoid doing the work needed, to show off the natural beauty of my own character, that just needed some refinement, some polishing? The work begins with the advice of the Mishna, “acquire yourself a friend.” With a good friend we have much to gain. But to “acquire” means that there is an expense involved. Still, the Mishna implies that this is a worthy investment. To acquire a good friend you need the skill of moving from being introvert to extrovert for the purpose of building a deeper relationship. An introvert protects his vulnerabilities by being withdrawn. The unconscious thinking of the introvert is, “If I don’t expose myself too much, I cannot get hurt.” There is always the natural fear of people taking advantage of his weak points, but in reality, the walls of insecurity are a huge billboard advertising the introvert’s weaknesses. People can sense the walls of insecurity put up by the introvert. “What does he have to hide?” people might ask. When an introvert makes that leap and readies himself to expose his weaknesses and thus better himself, it will give him the ability to be more grounded in reality. This process of self-discovery can make a person more honest with himself.
Aside from saying, “acquire for yourself a friend,” the Mishna goes on to say, “make for yourself a teacher.” So, why do you need both a friend and a teacher? And why is the term “make” used for the teacher and “acquire” used for the friend? The short answer is that there is no free lunch. According to the investment of your effort is the extent of your reward. To build a deep relationship with your “friend” who is your peer, you need to “acquire” – you need to pay in the “currency of effort.” A relationship is about two different individuals coming from two different places and meeting somewhere in the middle. That takes effort. It takes more work to build a relationship with a friend than with a good teacher. That is because a teacher, being the leader, will put more effort into the relationship and move to meet you where you are. So, while the “teacher” is good for the student, promoting and encouraging introspection and growth. It is actually the friend which can be the deeper catalyst for change, since the friendship with a peer requires more investment into the relationship. In contrast, the nature of the student-teacher relationship, requires less effort on the part of the student, and thus can yield lesser results. The teacher can actually inhibit growth by being so accessible and not demanding reciprocal effort.
February 18, 2013
Beyond the relationship you may have with a teacher or a friend, there is a third even more demanding relationship which yields the most results. Like when you take on responsibilities for others, such as being a parent or a caretaker. That is being the ultimate giver in a relationship. In such a position, you obligate yourself to search within, and to find the resources within yourself to provide for the needs of others. That is why I thank my children for making me who I am. A whole new experience in life began when I became a parent. Now let’s go back to our marble floor analogy. Just as we don’t want to cover over the marble with cement, linoleum, shiny wax and so forth, so too we have no need as people to hide beneath shallow veneers, as we avoid facing the work it takes to let the inner beauty shine. We must let the unabashed naked beauty of our character shine, as we are challenged to unleash the resources that hide deep within us.
