P
BY ALAYNE YEASH
Communications Coordinator
arents and kids line up early outside the gates of Fred Maas Baseball Field at Pelican Community Park on 18115 North Bay Road each year in anticipation of the City’s Annual Egg Scramble. The air is filled with the vibrations of excited children. Then, promptly at 10:00 am on Saturday, March 30, Mayor Norman S. Edelcup will release the crowd and the scramble will be on! What better way to search for eggs at a beachside community, than to dive and wade through a collection of colorful beach balls! Children under the age of 12, divided by age groups, will hunt for plastic eggs filled with trinkets that have been placed under the balls. A special scramble bag will be given to each participant.

Wandering & Pondering The Professional
I’m coming to feel that the professional Why is it that when we think of a professional we automatically assume that the word is something parents have used to one we are thinking of is in the medical, boast about the kids or to maybe set up a possible marriage. The expresaccounting or lawyering field? sion that he might nor be so To me that is a pretty bad mind much in the personality or looks, set. his job intones that he does have The other night we were eating some marriage appeal for parat a nice restaurant and the waitents to boast about. It doesn’t ress served us in a manner that take into account all the other was excellent. We complimented aspects of the word but more the her and she replied, “My family possible snob appeal and marhas always been in this business DAN PALMER riageability. If intoned properly, and I”ve learned how to handle it doesn’t account with the true professionmy duties professionally.” She was right. Think about going shopping in any mall als that make the living and working so and you are dealt with in a pleasant and well. So when you get someone saying anothcourtious manner, wouldn’t that mean you were handled by a professional? If your er person is a professional, it might be car is repaired, shouldn’t you label the smart to see why I am saying this. Or betrepair-person a professional as against an ter still, who is trying to do the matchmakamateur repairer? What I am getting at is ing. In Fiddler the matchmaker was the big that when we use the professional word it should include all categories that we deal dealer... New technology used by Sunny Isles Beach dentist BY DR. GEORGE GEORGIEV
When Elizabeth Shwartz cracked her tooth, a feeling of dread came over her. It wasn’t just the thought of cracking one of her molars that caused her anxiety. What had her worried was all the time she expected to spend in the dentist’s chair. “I previously cracked a tooth, and the temporary fell out while I was in public,” she said. “Then the new crown didn’t fit, so I had to return for another dental visit. “It was a nightmare,” she said. This time, her experience was just the opposite, thanks to new technology being used by her dentist, Dr George Georgiev from Sunny Isles Dental. He is one of a growing number of dentists equipped with a device that creates a three-dimensional model of patients’ teeth. The machine then makes crowns, caps and fillings while the patient waits. “You no longer need to have to get a temporary crown that falls out after three days,” said Dr George “We can create
your permanent crown in 10 minutes.” Combined with his master technician, Edgar they are true experts , created more than 4000 of this restorations. When Elizabeth came in to repair her tooth, she didn’t have to sink her gums into the gooey, mint -flavored mold paste that has been a staple of dentistry for decades. Instead a 3D digital impression was taken with high-tech scanning pen. The computer overlaid a model of a “perfect tooth” to show what it should look like and displayed a proposed crown to repair the damage. Because most people don’t have perfect teeth, the computer also projected where the new crown might grind with upper teeth. “We can widen, shorten or lengthen the proposed crown, depending on the needs and anatomy of the patient,” Dr George said. Edgar made changes to the image and sent a completed model of the crown to a computer- controlled carving machine. It cut the crown out of a small block of porcelain in 7 to 10 minutes. Fillings over other procedures are best because they’re more durable and because the procedure can be done in one visit.

Mount Sinai launches Women’s Center Care Program
Recognizing that women have unique healthcare needs that they often push aside to meet the demands of family and work, Mount Sinai Medical Center recently launched a new program to make it easier for women to get the care they need, when they need it. On Friday, March 8, Mount Sinai Medical Center celebrated International Women’s Day with the inauguration of a new Women’s Centered Care Program. Designed to meet the specific healthcare needs of women, this program will make it easier for female patients, and their family, to access the excellent medical care that Mount Sinai provides. The program features a multidisciplinary network of physicians and healthcare professionals who understand these needs and work together to optimize women’s health and well-being. This dedicated team will provide diagnosis, treatment and support services that are tailored to each individual patient. Key physicians in the program are trained in gender-specific medicine to fully understand the unique medical challenges that women often face. “While most people are certainly aware of the obvious differences between men and women,” said Dr. Veronica Rodriguez McCloskey, cardiologist with the Mount Sinai Heart Institute and part of the network of physicians in the Women’s Centered Care Program. “They may not be
aware that men and women react differently to some medications and that women are more vulnerable to some diseases and may have different symptoms than men.” “For example, a man and woman may experience severe chest or pressure, when having a heart attack, but women also can experience a heart attack without chest pressure,” she said. “Their symptoms often are more subtle.” Mount Sinai’s Women’s Centered Care Program includes
physicians who see patients on the hospital’s main campus in Miami Beach, as well as its satellite centers in Aventura, Key Biscayne, Coral Gables and Hialeah. The doctors’ specialties include cardiology, oncology, urology, endocrinology, obstetrics and gynecology, internal medicine, Alzheimer’s disease and memory disorders, diagnostic imaging, psychiatry, and more. In addition, a healthcare navigator will assist patients by helping find doctors, scheduling appointments, answering health-related or financial questions and coordinating services between subspecialties throughout the medical center. The navigator also will facilitate communication between the patient and her physicians. “The healthcare navigator is a unique feature of our program and a personalized service we are proud to offer our patients,” said Dr. Estelamari Rodriguez, oncologist in the Mount Sinai Comprehensive Cancer Center and chair of the Women’s Centered Care Program. “Here at Mount Sinai we want to make the experience of going to a healthcare facility – getting appointments and coordinating their care among all their physicians - easier and hassle-free.” To learn more about The Mount Sinai Women’s Centered Care Program, visit www.MountSinaiWomensCare.com, email WCCNavigator@msmc.com or call 305-674-2131.

Did you know about Passover and Easter stories? BY RICHARD C. SCHULMAN
City Historian
PASSOVER MARCH 25 SUNDOWN, 2013 Passover commemorates the oldest recorded struggle for freedom. The tradition of Passover is liberation, holiday of freedom. Over 3500 years ago, the Jewish people were liberated after 400 years of slavery and bondage, and the Haggadah tells us, they were not only freed, but also left Egypt with great wealth, under the aura of great miracles culminating in the parting of the Red Sea. Moses and Aaron pleaded with Pharaoh to let the Jews free. Pharaoh refused, so God punished the Egyptians with ten plagues. During the last plague, the angel of death carried out the slaying of every first-born Egyptian son. Israelites were “passed over.” The blood of the lamb was placed on the doorposts of all Israelites, so the angel of death passed over the Jews. This was the generation of Jews,
which accepted the “Ten Commandments” of the Torah from Moses at Sinai, and so after 20 generations of slavery and bondage, a nation was born, thus this Passover season commemorates both the freedom from the bonds of slavery and the birth as a Jewish people. And after 3,500 years when God related to Moses and his people, “tell thy son as I have you.” The Jewish people continue to tell the story of Passover which is read from the Haggadah, which translated means “to tell.”
EASTER MARCH 31, 2013 Easter is the annual festival commemorating the resurrection of Jesus Christ and the principal feast of the Christian year. It is celebrated on a Sunday on varying dates between March 22 and April 25 and is therefore called a movable feast. The dates of several other ecclesiastical festivals, extending over a period between Septuagesima Sunday (the ninth Sunday before Easter) and the first Sunday of Advent, are fixed in relation to the date of Easter. Connected with the observance of Easter are the 40-day penitential season of Lent, beginning on Ash Wednesday and concluding at midnight on Holy Saturday, the day before Easter Sunday; Holy Week, commencing on Palm Sunday, including Good Friday, the day of the crucifixion, and terminating with Holy Saturday; and the Octave of Easter, extending from Easter Sunday through the following Sunday. During the Octave of Easter in early Christian times, the newly baptized wore white garments, white being the liturgical
color of Easter and signifying light, purity, and joy.
I want to take this opportunity to wish all our citizens a Happy Easter and Passover.

Miami Dade Fire Rescue Proudly Serving Our Community BY COMMISSIONER JEANETTE GATTO
Every year the Miami Dade Fire Rescue (MDFR) delivers their annual report to the City Commission detailing services to our area. The report for 2012 recently arrived from the County’s new Fire Chief, Dave Downey. The Miami Dade Fire Rescue is considered one of the most elite fire rescue departments in the country and is recognized around the world for its exemplary service. Not only do they fight fires but they are also skilled in advance life support and are capable of providing pre-hospital care to heart attack and stroke victims. Over five years ago, MDFR established the Miami-Dade STEMI (blocked artery) network, which reduces the time it takes to restore blood flow to the patient, a very important life-saving
procedure. Additionally, MDFR was the first nation to establish a Stroke Center Coalition and Care Network for state of the art stroke care. Fire Rescue Station 10 is located in the center of Sunny Isles Beach (across from Epicure) and provided over 88% of the responses in our area last year. However Station 28, located in Eastern Shores, is less than a mile away providing additional coverage for our area. For those of you interested in statistics, the Miami Dade Fire Rescue dispatched more than 510 firefighters and 165 units to structure fire incidents in Sunny Isles Beach last year. They responded to over 1,400 life threatening incidences and almost 600 structure and other fires. We are proud of the brave men and women of Station 10 who are committed to our safety. Clearly, their mission statement “Always Ready, Proud to Serve” is indicative of their dedication to our community and we thank them for that.

School testing BY DR. ANNETTE WEISSMAN
Principal
SESAT, SAT10, FCAT 2.0, CELLA. These acronyms can be very confusing to parents and community members who are not part of the education system. So today I would like to unscramble these letters and explain what each one means and how we use these assessments to enrich teaching and learning. Each set of letters represents a test administered to our students to monitor their progress in meeting state standards. The SAT-10 is the Stanford Achievement Test – Tenth Edition. It is a standardized, norm-referenced achievement test that utilizes a multiple choice format. Students enrolled in first and second grade in the Miami-Dade County Public Schools are administered the Reading Comprehension and Mathematics Problem Solving subtests. The SAT-10 provides achievement data that can be used to compare local students’ performance with the performance of students in the nation. The SESAT is the Stanford Early Student Achievement Test and is administered to all Kindergarten students. CELLA is the Comprehensive English Language Learning Assessment. Since the 2006-2007 school year, the District administered the CELLA test to all students classified as ELL – English Language Learners. The CELLA measures growth in English language proficiency through speaking, listening, reading and writing assessments. The FCAT is the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test and it is a criterion-referenced test that measures students’ mastery of grade-level content. Last year, the Florida Department of Education transitioned from FCAT to FCAT 2.0 in reading and mathematics to align with new academic content. All students in grades 3 – 8 take the FCAT
2.0 in reading and mathematics and students in selected grades also take writing, science and civics tests. The data from these assessments are analyzed by the District and by the individual schools to drive classroom instruction. Teachers meet with the administrative team to review the data and determine the types of materials that are needed, the types of interventions that would be meaningful and the resources that are required to help a child succeed. At NSE SIB K-8 the data on each child is examined in great detail and enables the team to best meet the needs of the students. Parents frequently ask what they can do to help prepare their children for these assessments. Throughout the year NSE SIB K-8 has conducted workshops for parents to learn about the test and how they can support their children. Parents and students are urged to attend school daily; to pay close attention in class and to complete their home learning each night. Parents and students have also been advised that there are before and after school opportunities for additional academic support. Now as we approach the dates for test administration for the SESAT, the SAT -10 and the FCAT 2.0, I am asking the parents to ensure that students arrive on time each day and maximize their instructional time in class. Parents should be aware of the testing dates and should insist that students have a good night’s rest before each test and a healthy breakfast each morning before the test. Remember every child is entitled to a free breakfast every morning at school. Our cafeteria opens every morning at 7:45am to ensure a healthy start to each day. Preparing out students for these assessments is another example of the importance of the home and school working together for the benefit of the children. Rigorous classroom instruction plus good home health habits is a formula for success. I invite you to join us is creating a smooth testing environment for all our children.

Time to Wake Up!
BY RABBI YISRAEL BARON
We have all heard it many times. We must decrease our carbon footprint. We must be more green and earthfriendly. As a boy, I remember how when we went hiking in the woods they would tell us, “Don’t leave any wrappers or any mess behind. Leave the trail the way you found it.” In Genesis, the story is different. Man was not told just to maintain the environment, but “to work it and to watch it,” and “multiply and conquer it.” We must not only maintain our world, but also advance it. We are not just tourists, but active participants in completing G-d’s plans for a perfect world. We must exert influence towards the betterment of this world whenever possible. The Kabbalah talks about many spiritual worlds, yet our physical
world is referred to as “the world of action.” When presented with any opportunity to do good, you now have a responsibility to seize that moment and act. I was talking to Marty the other day and he said, “We come here to go to sleep.” No, those are not the actual words that he said. However that is what I understood him to mean when he said,” We come here and try to put ourselves in a little bubble to escape the realities of life and the world.” Marty does this by playing golf at least five times a week. And just in case you didn’t know, a round of golf can take as long as a full day’s work. So, Marty plays golf with just the right balance. Not too intense or competitive, but it absorbs him just enough to keep him busy and sane. “Ignorance is bliss.” All too often, we rather be ignorant of what’s going on around us, and enjoy the bliss. We rather enter that bubble and be peacefully “asleep.” This year, we commemorate 200 years since the passing of Rabbi Shneur Zalman of Liadi, the author of the Tanya and Code of

Jewish Law. As a young man, he was already recognized as a brilliant scholar. It was prearranged that his father-in-law, Yehuda Leib Segal, a wealthy resident of Vitebsk, would support him and his daughter Sterna after their wedding. However, since the father-in-law did not approve of the direction of his new son-in-law’s Chassidic studies, he reneged on his promise, and withheld support of the young couple. Young Shneur Zalman was forced to get a job as a maggid, a rabbi who delivers speeches of inspiration. After a period of time, this profession won him great acclaim. By that time, his father-in-law had passed away, but having been validated by his fame, his mother-in-law invited him back. Rabbi Shneur Zalman declined the offer and explained his reasoning with a parable: “A baby in its mother’s womb has all of its needs provided for: shelter, warmth, nutrition, and even proper cushioning, provided by just the right water bed. But once that baby enters the real world, it’s a one way trip. He cannot return to his bubble. So too, I must move forward and not escape my responsibilities.” Since we are not merely tourists in this universe, any opportunity we are given to influence our surroundings in a positive way must be seized. At times, we find ourselves refusing to absorb the realities around us. We’d rather live in a dream world. We don’t want to pay attention to the facts. Just like math, physics, and gravity are realities of the world, there are other realities that we know exist, but we choose to ignore. We’d rather escape and feign ignorance over their existence. At times, we’d rather go back to sleep in our bubble than assume the opportunities to influence our surroundings in a positive way. Ayal, a successful businessman I know, describes the secret of his success in an extremely simple way. Ayal attributes his success to a combination of getting up early and having a positive attitude. It’s like what Benjamin Franklin advised, “Early to bed and early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise.” Only, Ayal’s formula adds that you also need the positive attitude, since you could be figuratively sleeping while you are literally awake and walking around. Indeed, the code of Jewish Law advises one to arise early, and with an urgency to serve your purpose in this world. The way I see it, you need both the action and the attitude to be successful. Any delay in action will also weaken the resolve of your attitude as well. For example, if you decide to diet, you are best off starting immediately. For when you intend to start a diet at a later

date, the farther off in the future that date is, the less of a chance there is for any success. The state of sleep and the state of being awake only differ by their sense of awareness. When you are sleeping, you can dream of impossible things. Therefore, when a person undergoes surgery they put him to sleep, so that he is not aware of the reality around him. So too, being awake in attitude, means you are aware and ready to deal with the realities of the world around you. You don’t avoid or run away from responsibilities this awareness of reality poses; you embrace them and get to work. “Getting up early,” means you have a zest for being awake and facing life’s challenges because you are optimistic. As an early riser, you are excited and can’t wait to get up and get going. On the other hand, getting up late can mean you are trying to avoid life, because you are less positive and hesitate to enter the world of action. “Let me go back to sleep, into my world devoid of reality,” may be the message you are expressing when you turn over to the other side. Even if you are awake, you can seek activities that put you in a bubble devoid of reality. So you can be physically awake, but, on the practical level, really asleep as you walk through your day. This is akin to sleep-walking through your day. Strangely enough, thrill seekers and adrenaline junkies are not much different than these sleep walkers. They want to feel alive without having to take the responsibilities that come with it. As we tell ourselves that we want to make this world a better place, we must ask ourselves: How can I make an impact if I am pulling myself into the comfort zone of sleep, where I sedate myself to avoid the sometimes painful awareness of reality? So wake up! If you are given responsibilities, you must be aware of reality and use all of your potential for the benefit of mankind. Be awake with persistent optimism, and also help others take advantage of opportunities they may not see. Don’t go hitting that snooze button again...wake up!
