SIB School Liaison Officer Patty Gonzalez wins prestigious award
O
BY CHIEF FRED MASS
SIB Police Department
n March 22, 2013, Officer Patty Gonzalez was presented the prestigious William “Bill” Parrillo Award by the Parrillo family, for her dedicated service and commitment to the students at Norman S. Edelcup SIB K-8 School. Officer Gonzalez is completing her 3rd year as School Liaison Officer, representing the union between the SIB Police Department and the school. To say she has taken her assignment to another level would be an understatement. Officer Gonzalez combined a D.A.R.E. instructional program with a personal safety program for students of all ages. “It teaches students how to protect themselves in all areas, not just in drug prevention.” Even the littlest of our students can learn the basics of safety including

he NSE/SIB K-8 cafeteria was bursting with students eager to experience hands-on science during the school’s annual Science Bonanza. The room was energized with children and parents who were fascinated by the numerous activities related to science. Music! Exploration! Family Fun! It was all there for students from kindergarten through 8th grade. Dressed in lab coats, our fifth grade Singing Scientists opened the evening with a bouncy science song that set the tone for the event. Then students had an opportunity to circulate around the room and experience over 30 science based activities. Alonzo and Tracy Mourning High School students taught the children about Physical Science. The Robotics team from MAST Academy & Lego Robotics shared their robotics. Some time ago, the City of Sunny Isles Beach, implemented a spay/neuter program staffed by volunteers. This program has helped tremendously with the cat overpopulation. Unfortunately many beautiful little kittens have been left homeless by the owners leaving them behind when they move away, and others are being born outside because of the failure of owners to neuter the cat population. The volunteers of the Community Cats
Pretty Boy –––––––––––––––––––
Program are very dedicated. They handle feeding, trapping, and the transport to and from the veterinarians where the cats are also given the rabies vaccine. Many of these little kitties are very loving and make great pets and they are ready and waiting for adoption. Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer or adopting a kitty should contact Helena Forbes, Code Compliance Division Manager at 305-792-1772 or Desiree Liguori, Administrative Coordinator at 305-792-1792 who will in turn contact the volunteer familiar with the kittens.

President SIB School Trust Fund The Sunny Isles Beach School Trust Fund is committed to assisting our schools in maintaining the level of excellence in student performance to which we have become accustomed. This is accomplished by purchasing materials, hardware, curricular support, and upgrading technology to supplement the budget from the county School Board. Commissioner Jeanette Gatto is supporting our efforts with a donation to the fund. Donations are recognized with a piece of the wall engraved for posterity. Commissioner Gatto is in her first term and is making her presence a very welcome addition to our commission. She has studied hard to acquire the skills and knowledge necessary to participate in the running of the City government at a very high level. Her expertise from her back-
ground in advertising and public relations has been utilized to upgrade the look and content of our Community Newspaper. She had conducted information sharing open meetings in her residential district, and she’ll be participating in many more. She has updated her constituency on activities in the City and has responded to their requests with particular problems with information and corrective action. She has investigated constituent complaints and championed for their right to a hearing and a resolution. Of course, the School Trust Fund is always on the lookout for contributions, donations, and pledges from our citizens, developers, and entrepreneurs with relationships in the city. We are a Tax Deductible Public Charity. Please call Bob Welsh at (305)607-5706 for further information about your participation. And, thank you Commissioner Jeanette Gatto for your generosity and love of the City.

Celebrating Entertainment Milestones During Jewish American History Month BY DEBBIE WASSERMAN SCHULTZ
May is Jewish American Heritage Month, a time in our country when we recognize and celebrate the unique contributions that Jewish Americans have made to our history. We do so to raise awareness and dispel harmful prejudices. Like Black History Month and Women’s History Month, Jewish American Heritage Month, or JAHM, recognizes the notable contributions American Jews have made to the United States throughout its history. This year, we are celebrating the contributions Jewish entertainers have made to American culture. For generations, Jewish entertainers have made us laugh and moved us to tears through their creative work. They’ve also taught us important life lessons, making us think about the messages within the entertainment. They’ve helped audiences ponder some of life’s toughest issues – bigotry and tolerance, perseverance and determination, honesty and forgiveness. As an audience, we often recognize the entertainers but sometimes lose sight of the people behind the scenes – the directors, producers, writers and composers – whose vision is what these entertainers bring to life. For generations, Jewish Americans’ words and music have leapt from the page to the stage, bringing us into the worlds of generations past, into the traditions of other cultures and into the living rooms of families beyond our own. Leonard Bernstein showed us how vulnerable life can be when prejudice and hatred prevail over love. In “West Side Story,” Bernstein brought ‘Romeo and Juliet’ in to modern times, showing us through song that we can respect each other even if we come from different backgrounds or nationalities. Steven Spielberg brought us closer to the horrors of the Holocaust when he introduced us to a man named Oskar Schindler. In his film “Schindler’s List,” Spielberg brought a relatively unknown Oskar Schindler to life for the generations who followed him, showing us how the compassion of an ordinary man could triumph over prejudice. Spielberg once said “the best way to teach empathy is with examples of it, so that maybe someday, kindness will be a natural reflex and not just a random act.” Nora Ephron made a name for herself first as a journalist and then as an award-winning screen writer, leaving us iconic movies such as When Harry Met Sally and Sleepless in Seattle. She also made us laugh with her books full of humorous insights and obser-
vations about the world around us. In “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” producer David Wolper took us on a journey of imagination while teaching us – and our children – a valuable lesson about greed and honesty. He showed us how the greatest rewards can sometimes come from the simplest acts. How can we forget Norman Lear’s iconic sitcom, “All In The Family?” Each week, Americans were given a front row seat on Archie Bunker’s couch. Norman Lear used humor to show us how prejudice and bigotry can live right next door. However, as the times changed, so did Archie. And our society changed right along with him. And now, Steven Levitan brings us “Modern Family” – a new look at how our society has evolved throughout the generations, bringing blended-families and nontraditional families to primetime network television. Social responsibility is a basic tenet of a traditional Jewish upbringing. Judaism teaches us to give back to our community, as we work to repair the world. I believe Jewish artists - these writers, directors, producers and composers - give back to our society each and every time we enjoy their films, watch their shows or sing along to a familiar tune. We take away a message from their works, whether it’s that a single good deed may save a generation or how returning that “Everlasting Gobstopper” can lead to a great reward. So the text time you turn on your TV or go to watch a play or open a book, look for the lesson between the laughs. If we, as a nation, are to prepare our children for the challenges that lie ahead, then teaching diversity, tolerance and respect is a fundamental part of that promise. Together, we can help achieve this goal with the celebration of Jewish American Heritage Month. For more information about the history of Jewish life in America, Jewish American Heritage Month, or the many events occurring in May throughout the country, you can visit the official Jewish American Heritage Month website, www.jewishheritagemonth.gov or http://www.jahm.us. Jumping Out of the Box The City Commission Agenda BY RABBI YISRAEL BARON
“It is not the consumer’s job to know what he wants,” Steve Jobs responded when asked if he had done any market research. How can the consumer request a product that has yet to be invented? A true visionary sees opportunity and potential where most people see nothing at all. Over the last century, many visionaries were able to reveal much of the hidden and untapped potentials of our world. We have witnessed innovations and inventions in the fields of energy, medicine, technology, and agriculture. Real innovation is not about being just better or quicker, as running is to walking. Real innovation is about creating. Jumping to a place where we didn’t even know how to dream of. Running is faster than walking. Still every step is connected to the one before it. Only when you jump do you reach a place that has no connection to where you previously stood. Wouldn’t you like to claim the title “visionary”? What is the next frontier waiting to be explored? How about human potential? Can we manage to unlock the potential that lies hidden and untapped within us and within the people around us? Can we bring out the best in the people we encounter? Maybe it’s time to turn the microscope around and look inward. My teenage daughter’s report card came in the mail recently. As her father, I derived ample satisfaction from her grades, and even more so from comments like, “A pleasure to have in class!” But this reminded me of one of my favorite report card comments: “Has great potential. If he would only apply himself, he would accomplish wonders.” How’s that for a back-handed compliment? I look back at my school years and then to where my classmates are today. It is amazing to see how our guesses and predictions about who would succeed in life were totally off the mark. In some cases, the ones who may have been (unkindly) seen as “losers” are the ones that have stable jobs, happy marriages, pleasant children, and are productive members of their communities and of our society at large.
And others, who were popular or smart and showed “great potential,” are still showing “great potential” with little tangible results to show for their years on this earth. How do we develop our potential? How do we help others access and develop their potential? For starters, we have to believe the potential is there. As humans, “created in the image of G-d,” we certainly have potential—an infinite supply of it. However, occasionally it takes a keener eye to discover. Consider this: Valuable commodities are sometimes found deep beneath the earth. Some drilling is often necessary in order to reveal the treasures and natural resources that lay deep beneath the surface. Even the top soil, which to a citydweller might look like plain dirt or mud, is seen as invaluable to a farmer, since in reality this very earth has all the minerals needed to grow fruit and vegetables. Like the prospector exploring for natural resources, or the farmer working his land, it takes attention and effort to produce. And, I submit, an ounce of courage. Because when we try we run the risk of failure. But as long as we are working at growing and moving forward we are alive and doing what we were created to do—and we will succeed in the end. Sure, it also takes a little faith in our potential. We don’t always see it. Think of radio waves, though. They too are not visible to the naked eye, but we appreciate them through technological inventions that have harnessed them. Can we, just the same, open our eyes to a see the reality of the human commodities we all possess? Let us be visionaries and use persistent optimism to unlock the most awesome potential found in us and those around us. Samson Oceanfront Park Improvements BY ALAYNE YEASH
Communications Coordinator Beachgoers who trek to the ocean may have recently noticed a partial closure of the northern walkway of our beautiful Samson Oceanfront Park. This temporary closure is necessary while improvements to the facilities are underway. These renovations will benefit both the residents and visitors who stay on our shores. If you are a longtime resident, you will remember that Samson Oceanfront Park was the first park opened in the City. It was dedicated in 2000 and after 13 years in operation, it is due for a facelift. These planned renovations to the park are extensive and will stretch over a period of time. The park remains open with the southern walkway giving access to the beach. The improvements include many areas of the park. The pavilion will remain in its existing configuration, but through better use of space, the restroom facilities will be expanded to include more stalls. The wooden walkway to the beach and railings adjacent to the walkway will be completely renewed. The children’s play area will be replaced
and feature a new shade cover. More benches and tables will be installed when the older ones are replaced, using creative design and positioning to get the most out of the picnic area. Enhanced lighting will be installed in all areas of the park. The majestic palm trees that have been temporarily removed from the park will return and the landscaping will continue to be lush and welcoming to patrons as they sit and enjoy the ocean breezes. This temporary closure of some of the park’s features will continue over a period of months. The park will continue to be one of this World Class City’s best assets, taking advantage of the proximity to the gorgeous Atlantic Ocean, the view of the sandy beach and the wide open green space. When completely refurbished, Samson Oceanfront Park will have greatly improved facilities with many more outdoor spots for patrons to rest, relax and rejuvenate. NOTE: The Mayor and Commissioners want your input. A workshop will be scheduled to allow members of the public an opportunity to provide feedback on what you would like to see in Samson Park.
