Newport Fishing Pier Grand Opening
urricane season runs from June 1 to November 30 each year and residents should be prepared. Miami-Dade County’s Office of Emergency Management website is a good information source for all residents planning for a family’s needs before, during and after a storm. Go online at www.miamidade.gov/fire/oem. At that site, you can find Evacuation and Surge Zone Maps, lists of bus pickup locations for those needing transportation to a shelter, lists of shelters, ideas for making your own hurricane kit and much more. Pre-registration is required for petfriendly shelters and special needs residents to ensure a place at a shelter during an emergency. Special needs are defined as those individuals who do not live in a managed care facility or nursing home. A person who needs help with daily living, or has lifesaving medical equipment dependent on electricity must pre-register for the Special Needs & Emergency Evacuation Assistance Program (PSN/EEAP). Go to: http://www.miamidade.gov/fire/evacuation-program.asp. For those residents who may not have access to the computer and would like to pre-register, call the County Answer Line at 311. As the season progresses, check for more hurricane information at the Sunny Isles Beach Sun Community Newspaper, the SIB Living Magazine, the SIBTV Cable Channel 77 or www.sibfl.net.

fter a long wait, the completely re-built Newport Fishing Pier will be opening this summer, replacing the historic pier destroyed by Hurricane Wilma in 2005. This will be the only public fishing pier in Miami-Dade County. The $6.5 million project was completed using public and private sector money by way of an agreement between The Cornfeld Group and the City of Sunny Isles Beach. The new pier is impressive, with the complete length stretching to 776 feet, 610 of that over the water, and containing 11,593 square feet of usable space. The pier features a lifeguard observation area, a public fishing concession and a world class restaurant (opening in late 2013). Public parking for the pier is located at 16501 Collins Avenue. On Saturday, June 15, join your neighbors and city officials for the ribbon cutting celebration to open the completely renovated Newport Fishing Pier. It is sure to be a fun time, beginning with a “SNIP” of the scissors and ending with a BANG as fireworks are displayed at the end of the pier! This free event will feature activities for children and musical entertainment. A free community shuttle bus will run before, during and after the event to transport residents to and from Pier Park. For questions please call Cultural & Community Services at 305-792-1706.

Anniversar y celebration to be held at Town Center Park
annual he City’s Anniversary celebration is usually scheduled for the third Sunday in June each year, since the actual date of incorporation was June 16, 1997. But this year, the day of the celebration actually corresponds to the real anniversary. The City will be, as they say, “Sweet 16” on the 16th! Entertainment, games and food will be offered for the residents at Town Center Park, 17200 Collins Avenue from noon to 4:00 pm on Sunday, June 16th. The traditional barbeque will be free for all holders of the SIB Resident ID Card. Those without the card or non-residents will be required to pay $5 for the meal from Shorty’s BBQ. The 16th Anniversary cake will also be cut and served by the City Commission at approximately 3:00pm.

SPOTLIGHT ON... VLADA RABIN
Sunny Isles Beach is known for beautiful beaches, sunshine and nationally ranked tennis players. What? That’s right; Florida’s Riviera can now boast a resident champion, Vlada Rabin, a 1st Team All-American Women’s Tennis Player and 2013 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division I Singles Champion. How did this tennis wonder land in Sunny Isles Beach? Vlada started playing tennis at age 4 and by age 10 was ranked #2 in the state of Indiana. Her family moved to Sunny Isles Beach in 2004. She began studying with coach Mike Melanefy of South Florida Tennis Academy. She was ranked as a top player in Florida when she won the district title as a 12 year old. At that time she was attending Highland Oaks Middle School. As Vlada approached high school age, she shifted her workouts to the Tennis Academy in Pembroke Pines and was coached there by Bill Adams. At that time, she began competing in more International Tennis Federation (ITF) tournaments. A traditional high school schedule was no longer possible due to the demands of travel and Vlada switched to home schooling. Her home base remained in Sunny Isles Beach. Colleges began to take serious notice of this young star competing on the United States Tennis Association Junior Tour during her senior year. As a result, Vlada was accepted at ASA College (Manhattan) as a pre-Med student and began her college tennis career immediately, playing for their women’s tennis team as a freshman. At the 2013 National Junior College Athletic Association, Division I Tournament this year she was seeded #1 which meant, she was the one to beat! When it was all over she prevailed as the Singles 5th Flight Champion. She was also named a First

Team, All –American. But her tournament play didn’t end there, teaming up with another player, she also competed in the doubles tournament and they captured the Double 3rd Flight RunnerUp. And lastly, as a member of the Women’s Team from ASA College, she and her teammates finished as the National Runners-Up. The Men’s Team from ASA College also was Runners-Up in the tournament. Coach Melanefy was extremely happy that Vlada won the Championship this year because she worked hard to overcome, “limited tournament experience over the last three years.” When speaking about his student, the coach said, “nice girl…hits well.” He had the highest praise for her determination, work ethic and personal standards. Vlada will continue playing on the Women’s National Team, representing the United States at world competitions. Pretty good stuff for a freshman in college! Be sure to follow sports news for future accomplishments of our very own Sunny Isles Beach tennis star. We wish her well as she continues her studies and her rise to the top of the tennis world!

Hemorrhoids?
WE ALL HAVE THEM. Have Dr. Egozi Get Rid of Them!
What are they? Everyone has hemorrhoids. However, most people don’t actually call them hemorrhoids until they cause us grief. Hemorrhoids are simply cushions of vascular tissue, but over 50% of people will experience symptomatic hemorrhoids at some point in their life. Symptomatic hemorrhoids occur when the tissue starts to prolapse and fall out of place. This can cause itching, bleeding and swelling which is very uncomfortable and even painful.
Fast, Painless and Effective Treatment is Available! Banish your ‘roid rage with Dr. Egozi and the CRH O’Regan System! The CRH O’Regan System treats hemorrhoids by rubber band ligation. Unlike traditional banding methods which use a metal toothed grip, the CRH O’Regan System utilizes a plastic syringelike device which gently draws hemorrhoid tissue into its barrel. Dr. Egozi then realizes a tiny rubber band around the tissue which will fall off in a few days once a scar has formed. This scar is what causes the prolapsed tissue to be pulled back up into place which will relieve 99% of people of their symptoms! Does this sound painful? It shouldn’t! Dr. Egozi chooses the CRH O’Regan System to treat your hemorrhoids because he places the rubber band in an area of your body which has no nerve endings. Because of this, you won’t need sedation for the procedure, which only takes 1 minute to perform. There is also no down time for recovery allowing you to return to work or home immediately after your appointment.
Help Keep Hemorrhoids Away! While there is no definite cause of hemorrhoids, Dr. Egozi recommends a few tips to help prevent symptoms. Avoid constipation which can cause hemorrhoids to prolapse and cause discomfort. Do so by staying away from high-fat and low fiber foods. Also, increase your water and fiber consumption by drinking at least eight glasses of water and consuming 15 grams of fiber per day.
Who is Dr. Egozi? As a board certified General Surgeon, Dr. Leon Egozi has been treating hemorrhoids for years. In 2007, he became one of the first surgeons trained to use the CRH O’Regan System for hemorrhoid banding. He studied at the University of Miami and earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from the Medical College of Wisconsin. Aside from his private practice in Aventura, Dr. Egozi is currently on staff at various hospitals and serves on the Medical Executive Committee of a premier ambulatory surgery center.
Arrange a consultation with Dr. Leon Egozi by phoning his office in Aventura at 305-504-2111 or in Sunny Isles at 305-504-2112 For more information, please visit www.crhsystem.com

NATIONAL JUNIOR HONOR SOCIETY INDUCTEES Principal NSE SIB K-8
BY DR. ANNETTE WEISSMAN
This was a truly special evening! Everyone was basking in the glow of the candles and the warmth of friendship. Paula Cardona, Isaac Favata, John Garcia, Chloe Golan, Jessica Hecker, Gabriel Hernandez, Melina Kamaritis, Deliliah Rose Mena, Lourdes Pajuelo, Francesca Sperbeck, and Brandon Zirulnikoff were all inducted into the National Junior Honor Society at Norman S. Edelcup Sunny Isles Beach K-8. This is the first year that the chapter inducted students so these 11 students represent the school’s first members. As their principal, I was overwhelmed with a sense of pride and satisfaction that we at Sunny Isles Beach have provided an environment in which these children could grow and thrive and become such responsible, caring young people. To qualify for membership, the students had to meet aca-
demic requirements to satisfy the scholarship requirement, had to perform community service to satisfy the service requirement, and had to secure letters of recommenda-
tion to satisfy the citizenship, leadership and character requirements. It was a huge assignment, but these students rose to the occasion and submitted all the paperwork
and documentation in a timely fashion. Of course an accomplishment such as this requires teamwork with support coming from their families, their teachers and the community and all these groups participated in the program. The NJHS Board composed of Ms. Adler, Ms. Alfonso, Mr. Avery, Ms. Bonkoski, Ms. Prince-Burrell and Ms. Taylor spoke about the five disciplines that define the National Junior Honor Society. Then Mayor Edelcup joined me in presenting the students with their Certificates of Membership. Finally, the parents pinned the membership pins on their children. Everyone was thrilled to be a part of this meaningful ceremony honoring our superstars. I look forward to supporting the chapter’s growth and development during the 20132014 school year. We know the new student officers will bring new energy and motivation to the club.

Arbor Day provides each of us with the opportunity to celebrate nature and learn more about the importance of trees in our world. Each year our students study about the impact of trees on our lives and culminate their projects with the planting of a tree in our community. This year, fourth grade students from Ms. Llanes and Ms. Jay’s classrooms, recited poems, wrote essays and learned songs to share their knowledge at the NSE SIB K-8 Arbor Day Program. The students were accompanied by Ms. Rabinovich and Mr. Cox’s band students. Over the past few years, we have planted trees in various locations around the school and Pelican Park and the children enjoy watching “their” trees grow. The Arbor Day program is a special event that raises awareness about trees and nature and the respect each of us should have for nature. As always, this program is produced in cooperation with the community and community leaders who were in attendance.

Growing Pains BY RABBI YISRAEL BARON
Moses had the historic role of leading the Jews out of Egypt. He was also chosen by G-d to be His personal messenger to deliver the Torah, His word, to the world. This was the most important communication of all time. If this is the case, why did G-d choose Moses for these rolls if Moses had a speech impediment? In fact, Moses himself asked this question of G-d as he was being drafted for the job. Moses was an 80-year-old shepherd when G-d appeared to him in the burning bush, and drafted him for a career change. Moses argued that there were other people more fit for this job. G-d responded, “Who has given a mouth to the mute?..” In other words, G-d said, “Moses, you were chosen specifically because of your lack of communication skills, so that you shall know where your strength comes from, and not let your ego interfere. Realize it is not about you, and just step aside. Just as I have created the heaven and the earth, I will make everything work out.” Indeed, Moses did prove to have the ultimate humility. He is later referred to as the “most humble man on earth.” This allowed him to become the greatest prophet that ever was or ever will be. I have a friend who had a terrible stutter, yet he was determined to overcome his handicap. So he would go out to the street corner and ask complete strangers, “Wh wh wha what t’ t’ t’ time is it?” As a profession, he chose to go into sales, where he would not only need to be understood, but would have to be convincing, as well!! Now, after years of hard work, he has become an inspirational public speaker!! It is counter-intuitive, but people with challenges go farther than those with natural talent. They value that which they worked so hard to accomplish. They are also more focused. When investing so much time and effort, such people give considerable thought as to what they wanted to accomplish. Most of all, when starting from humble beginnings, they take nothing for granted, they appreciate hard work, and they internalize the verse, “Who has given a mouth to the mute?” The paradox here is that while struggling to survive, it may be harder to pursue your higher existence, your spiritual growth and well-being. However, when survival is no longer an issue, it is easier to forget about developing that higher existence. Finding that spiritual part within us that is crying out for attention, nurturing and direction is crucial to developing that higher existence. And
that’s the part of us that needs to be given attention in order to fulfill our mission on this earth. Another impediment to growth is that people may become complacent unless they are challenged. Each one of us has an individualized and specific human potential, and that potential has a better chance of being revealed when our very existence is challenged. Don’t feel left out if you feel that you have no challenges, because every person is challenged to grow beyond where they are. However, if we perceive ourselves to be a full vessel, brimming with pride, how can we absorb? Either life’s circumstances can humble us, and that route is often accompanied by what we perceive as painful circumstances, or we can choose to realign our perspective and internalize the verse, “Who has given a mouth to the mute?” Moses was not just humbled by circumstance. Even at the height of his greatness, he realigned his perspective to remain modest. Moses realized that he was given opportunities which others were not. Moses remained humble even after he was proclaimed the greatest prophet. He was humbled even by the simpleton. Moses thought, “Perhaps the simpleton would have taken better advantage of the gifted opportunities had they been given to him.” Moses understood, as we should as well, that greater opportunities must be viewed as a package deal; they come with greater responsibilities, as well. Feeling satisfied with or fulfilled at your position in life is the biggest enemy of growth. The hunger to fully realize your Gd given potential has to be stronger than the discomfort that it might entail to daily grow beyond your perceived limitations. True growth takes work. Often we’d rather take the lazy or complacent route and say that we have no remaining challenges. So let’s say “no” to that voice of stagnation, open our eyes to all of the marvelous opportunities we are given and not sit still. Let us enjoy the movement, the growth, and the occasional and fleeting discomfort of stretching to fulfilling our G-d given potential...and be all we were meant to be!!! Rabbi Yisrael Baron resides in Sunny Isles Beach with his wife and five children. He is the Spiritual Leader and Co-Director of Chabad Lubavitch of Sunny Isles Beach, Co-Director of iVolunteer Florida http://www.ivolunteerfl.org/ Chaplain for Aventura Hospital, and Chaplain for the Sunny Isles Beach Police Department. SCHULMAN’S CORNER Father’s Day — Third Sunday in June BY RICHARD C. SCHULMAN
City Historian
This year Father’s Day will be celebrated on Sunday, June 16. This tradition began in America in Fairmont, West Virginia on July 5, 1908. Mrs. Grace Golden Clayton gave a party honoring the lives of 210 fathers who were lost in the 1907 Monongah mining disaster. But unfortunately since West Virginia didn’t officially register the holiday, most recognize the first Father’s Day celebration being held in Spokane, Washington on June 19, 1910. The celebration in Spokane was conceived the year before on Mother’s Day by Sonora Smart Dodd. Sonora was raised by her father, Henry Jackson Smart, after her mother died. She realized how much her father had sacrificed to raise her without a mother’s help. Because her father was born in June, she chose to hold the first Father’s Day celebration in Spokane, Washington on the 19th of June, 1910.
President Calvin Coolidge urged state governments to observe the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day in 1924. Many states did not join in on the celebration. The observance was not made official until 1972 when President Richard Nixon signed a proclamation giving Father’s Day federal recognition on the third Sunday of June each year. Wishes go out to fathers everywhere for a healthy and happy celebration with their children.
Fla g Da y, June 14 DEFINITION OF A FLAG: Usually a piece of cloth, oblong or square, bearing the distinctive arrangement of symbols and colors of a Nation, or State, or having a meaning as a signal; in the U.S. “Old Glory” or “The Stars and Stripes” or “The Star Spangled Banner,” the colors; our National trademark. “The Republic, never retreats. Its flag is the only flag that has never known defeat. Where that flag leads, we follow, for we
know that the hand that bears it onward is the unseen hand of God.” Albert J. Beveridge, speech in Philadelphia. February 15, 1899. “The Flag is the embodiment, not of sentiment, but of history. It represents the experiences made by men and women, the experiences of those who do and live under the Flag.” President Woodrow Wilson, speech in New York, June 14, 1915. Nobody knows who devised the first Flag, but there is a story about how it happened. “Seems that one warrior got hurt in a fight between two tribes, and held up his bloody garment to show that he needed help, and everybody followed him. That’s why so many flags use the color red, say the mythmakers.” “Because it’s so easy to follow…” “Oh, say does that Star Spangled Banner yet wave/ o’er the land of the free, and the home of the brave?” (Francis Scott Key, “The Star Spangled Banner,”) September 1814.
