he end of summer vacation can only mean one thing, the return to school. However, as children and parents alike dread the first day of school, the picture seems to be slightly different in the City of Sunny Isles Beach. The City of Sunny Isles Beach’s Back to School season started off with its yearly Back to School Picnic on Saturday, August 17th at Heritage Park. The City provided parents and students with a stress free environment where they could catch up on everything they needed to know in order to be ready for their first day back.

hey made us an offer we couldn’t refuse… A day trip just outside of Taormina placed us in the heart of what most everyone in this world thinks of when they think of Sicily. In the little villages of Savoca and Forza D’Agro we experienced the inspiration for Francis Ford Coppola’s Oscar winning films, The Godfather I, II, & III. From the famous Bar Vitelli to the church where Michael Corleone weds his Apollonia, we hiked in the baking hot Sicilian sun. But it was worth every drop of sweat because at the end we drove to the very castle where all the famous stars worked together to create the masterpiece that is The Godfather. The Baron Platania gave us a personal tour of Castello degli Schiavi, a truly magical place. Not only is it spectacular aesthetically speaking, the baroque palace contains vintage photos from the making of the films, the piano from the first night club in Taormina, and a volcanic stone basement that hosts

Castello degli Schiavi ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– paintings worthy of a museum. At the end of the tour we even got to do our See photos on page 10 own rendition of the death of Michael Corleone.

Free digital technology courses for persons 60+ BY COMMISSIONER JENNIFER LEVIN

On May 17, 2013, I watched a segment on Today concerning a technology program offered by Senior Planet, a nonprofit organization located in New York City (www.seniorplanet.org). Among other things, the course teaches persons 60 years of age and older how to use digital technology. The program is funded by grants and is offered free of charge. I immediately contacted Sunny Isles Beach staff and asked them to research the possibility of our establishing similar courses here in the City. Thanks to the

efforts of our Cultural and Community Services and Information Technology Departments, I am happy to announce that we were able to find a technology program for those 60 and over, and it will begin in October! Thereafter, the courses will be offered two times per year. The program is designed and taught by S.T.E.P.S. in the Right Direction, Inc., a nonprofit organization serving people in need in Miami-Dade and Monroe counties (www.stepsflorida.org). Through federal funding, S.T.E.P.S. is able to provide this technology training to persons 60 and older at no cost. The agency’s overall purpose is to help the elderly and families reach financial stability and self-sufficiency. You must be 60 or older to enroll and the

courses are free! The curriculum includes computer usage, internet, email, and social media. The first offering will be the Level 1 Basic course on Mondays and Wednesdays, October 7 through October 21, 2013, from 10:30 a.m. until noon. The Level 2 Intermediate courses, for those having successfully completed Level 1, will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays, November 4 through November 20, 2013, from 10:30 a.m. to noon. All classes will be held at Pelican Community Park and, of course, free shuttle service is available. Enrollment is limited. To enroll, or for more information, call 305.792.1706. For future classes and other program information, you may also visit the City of Sunny Isles Beach website at www.sibfl.net.

Nikki Danielle Inc. was founded in Montreal in 1975 by Isaie J. Bouhadana. The inspiration for the brand name came first from a famous french, designer in Paris. Also, the name was obvious when he met his wife Nicole, who at the time was a french singer going by her artist name, Nikki Danielle. Isaie started with one boutique and quickly expanded the business to several other stores in major malls. He then decided to sell wholesale. Years later, his daughter, Eva joined the company to become his partner and to develop the business into one of the most successful and reputable trade names in the fashion industry. Isaie’s dream was always to move to warm weather on the beautiful beaches of Florida. He pursued his passion and opened Nikki Danielle Miami. Nikki Danielle Inc. sells ready-to-wear women’s fashionable clothing collections. The company strives to have the latest selection of clothing in all sizes per style, making shopping fun and easy. The park was filled with laughter and smiles as the stresses of the first day were taken off of everyone’s shoulders and they were able to enjoy their last few days of summer vacation. Parents were able to purchase uniforms for both Norman S. Edelcup Sunny Isles Beach K-8 community school and Alonzo and Tracy Mourning Senior High School, receive information about immunizations from Mount Sinai and were given details about the City’s upcoming season of Athletic programs including our travel soccer league. During the event, more than 600 residents and guests enjoyed a variety of bounce houses, scrumptious snacks, creative crafts, and musical games and activities. The premiere attraction seemed to be the children’s crafts where children of all ages put their creative skills to the test to make a one of a kind pencil topper for their new complimentary Sunny Isles Beach pencils. Those who stopped by the City’s information booth received several free gifts such as pencils, eraser, and sharpeners and Sunny Isles Beach residents who presented their Resident ID Card received a special stylus pen duo for all their tech needs.

The giveaways did not end there, the City’s Cultural and Community Services Department sponsored their yearly eSIBi book bag raffle where by signing up for the City’s email notification program they were automatically entered to win a brand new book bag stuffed with all the goodies needed for the school year. Our winners were Viviana Pinto and Maurice Legros who walked away with smiling faces ready to conquer the new school year. After the event, guests were encouraged to spend the rest of their afternoon enjoying one of the City’s many parks and their many amenities such as the Splash Pad at Heritage Park. Only in the City of Sunny Isles Beach does the vacation never end and even going back to school is a fun-filled event. If you missed out on our Back to School event, please be sure to check our website and sign up for our eSIBi notifications to get on the spot notifications about upcoming events, cultural programs and much more. Our Sister City, Netanya Israel BY BOB WELSH

If Sunny Isles Beach is Florida’s Riviera, then Netanya is Israel’s Sunny Isles Beach. There are various similarities between the two cities. Netanya is a lively seacoast town situated in central Israel. It is a central magnet for immigration and tourism that attracts thousands of visitors each year. The lovely and crowded beaches extend the entire length of the city. Its numerous Galleries, Museums, and hotels have made it a popular tourist resort. Walking around Netanya, you will hear a variety of languages spoken in the streets by tourists and residents. Netanya was originally established as a Moshave – a small agricultural village with citrus groves and a flourishing tourist trade in the late 1920’s. A group of prominent and wealthy New York Jews motivated by Nathan (hence the name Netanya) Strauss, the principal owner of Macy’s Department Store, fell in love with the climate and the location and in the mid 1930’s incorporated the City Of Netanya. Netanya is also the closest coastal city to the areas that are the subject of the ongoing Peace Talks with the Palestinian Authority. The city’s mayor is Miriam Fierberg who personally visited Sunny Isles Beach when we became sister cities. The population is expected to grow from its’ 185,000 to 300,000 by 2020. The city today is a lively resort city. The Central Square has bazaars and concerts every week in the summer and monthly in the winter. It has dozens of hotels, coffee shops, and restaurants offering a variety of ethnic tastes, fashion bou-

tiques, shopping centers, galleries, and entertainment spots. Festivals and other events are held in Netanya throughout the year, making the city become a dynamic gathering place. The finest feature of Netanya is its beautiful beaches that extend for almost eight miles along the city’s seacoast. There are beaches for religious Jews with separate hours for men and women. There is an unofficial clothing optional beach. The bathing beaches have rental facilities for motorized sports in the water and dune buggy excursions through the pristine cliff areas. Above the beach is a ridge of rugged cliffs - the only ones of their kind in Israel with a beautiful landscaped promenade along the seashore. The promenade is part of the “Israel Road” - a marked walking path that extends the entire length of the country from Kibbutz Dan in the north to Eliat in the south. Horses are an integral part of the Netanya culture. In the early 1980’s an American Rodeo champion named Larry Behar opened a Riding Academy in Moshave Olesh that started an American “Western” culture in Israel. Moshave Olesh is east of Netanya but the mailing address is Netanya, Israel. You can grab a group ride along the beach on scheduled intervals, and experienced riders can rent a horse for an hour or two. Netanya has a unique place in Israel history. Many cities in Israel have Biblical roots with excavations that substantiate their claims. Most seaside cities were seaports for trade between Europe, Africa, & Asia. Because Netanya does not have a history before 80 years ago, it is wholly a product of

Bob Welsh, Mayor Miriam Ikar-Fierberg and Sarah Welsh ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

modern immigration. The two best competing seafood restaurants are “Dag Hayam” on the beach run by Mizrahi Jews, and “Lucullus” in the Kikar (Central Square) run by French speaking Jews from Morocco. In a nearby park there is a sycamore tree that is 1,000 years old. The Pninat Shabtai Museum features an exhibition of Yemenite folklore, and the Diamond Center Museum has an exhibition of diamonds and a miniature model of a diamond mine. It was in the 1970’s that I went to “Blue

Bay Beach” in what is now Northern Netanya and “Green Beach” which is south near Poleg, and I was not in Netanya. Today Netanya has grown with the new wave of Russian immigrants to incorporate those outlying areas and build beautiful condominiums, parks, playgrounds, and restaurants. Mayor Fierberg was very hospitable to Sara and me. She cannot wait to visit us again and extends her invitation to all Sunny Isles Beach residents to visit Netanya, also a City of Sun and Sea.

SCHULMAN’S CORNER Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur ‘Rosh Hashanah’ Sundown on September 4th ‘Yom Kippur’ Sundown on September 13th BY RICHARD C. SCHULMAN

City Historian

THE MEANING OF ROSH HASHANAH

Literally means “Head of the Year,” and is observed in the beginning of the 7th Month “Tishri,” as the Jewish New Year. The first of Tishri marks the anniversary of the creation of the world, which according to tradition over 5700 years ago, this year being 5774 and therefore Jewish chronology begin the year with this day. The name “ROSH HASHANAH” does not occur in the Bible. Instead, it is referred to as the Day of the Blowing of the Trumpet, “Yom Teruah,” the Day of Memorial or Remembrance and the Memorial of the Sounding of the Shofar. It is also considered the Day of Judgment, when all mankind is judged by the creator and the fate of each individual is inscribed in the book of life. ROSH HASHANAH, unlike the secular New Year, is both solemn and a festive occasion. Its joy is spiritually disciplined by the sacred traditions of home and the synagogue. Although the observance of the high holy days is centered primarily in the synagogue, the home is where the family prepares to meet the New Year, in a spirit of faith, and in a mood conducive to prayer and soul searching. There are ten days of repentance or observance ending with the holiest day of the Jewish New Year, “YOM KIPPUR,” day of atonement, which is observed entirely in the synagogue a day of fasting, self denial in food and other physical pleasures is part of the tradition of this “Sabbath of Sabbaths.” The most characteristic symbol of “ROSH HASHANAH” is the SHOFAR, or Ram’s horn. The Ram’s horn is used in commemoration of the sacrifice of Isaac. The last moment before Abraham was to sacrifice Isaac, a Ram caught in a thicket was used as a substitute sacrifice. To honor the Ram, Jews use a Ram’s horn at religious services. Horns of cows were

rejected because these animals were associated with the worship of the Golden Calf by the children of Israel in the desert, a sin vigorously condemned by Moses. It is used to call each person to recall their past deeds and shortcomings, and to engage in the process of introspection and repentance. It is mentioned frequently in the Bible and through the Talmud, and later Hebrew literature. The “SHOFAR,” was used in ancient times to sound alarms, to assemble armies for attack and to announce plague or famine. In addition, the SHOFAR heralded important events such as the accession of a ruler to the throne, or the proclamation of a rabbinical edict. It was also used to usher in the Sabbath, festivals and new moon and together with other instruments was frequently employed as part of the worship in the Temple in Jerusalem. The Shofar call “TEKIA GADOLLA” concludes the day of fasting. The extended blast expresses the feeling of the worshippers that they have extended themselves spiritually during the long day of prayer and are now resolved to reach out during the coming year towards new insights and more meaningful living. “Give heed to the sounds of Shofar, the sharp piercing blasts of the Shofar, rending the air with its message, its portents of heavenly salvation, summoning man to his father, to render him homage and devotion.” “Renounce ye your sins and transgressions, false aims and vainglorious striving, infuse in your hearts, a new spirit to build a new earth and new heaven. Heed ye the sound of the Shofar, the blast that is blown, O my people.” With the coming of another year, ON BEHALF OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION, may WE wish everyone in Sunny Isles Beach, the State of Florida, our nation and your loved ones, the greatest of man’s blessings…a peaceful world in which to enjoy health and happiness. “May you be inscribed for a wonderful good year.”

If you take a walk down Sunny Isles Beach, you will most likely notice that there is always an activity going on in our local community. The City’s Cultural and Community Services department offers many recreational and sports programs as well as special events for the whole family. However, what you may not be aware of, are the City’s Cultural Event Trips, which take place twice a month and range from activities such as attending professional sports games, concerts, Off Broadway Plays, and museum visits. This program was created to make the hidden gems of South Florida more easily accessible to the residents and guests of Sunny Isles Beach. This past month, our Cultural Event Trip took us down to the Redlands of Florida where we found ourselves in Schnebly Redland’s Winery and Brewery. The itinerary for the day included a tour of the facility followed by a tasting of the wineries most popular wines, which included Avovino, Guavino, and Cocovino. During the tour our guests enjoyed a brief history on how the winery came to be as well as the steps and processes that goes into making each of their unique wines. Guests on the trip also enjoyed valuable tips such as the flavor notes of the wine as well as which wines pair well with a variety of meats, fish and cheeses. The reason why this may not sound like what you would typically expect to try at a

winery is because Schnebly’s is not your typical winery. Created by Peter and Denisse Schnebly as a way to promote agro-tourism in the Redlands of South Florida; Schnebly’s Winery was built in 2003. The couple already owned 96 acres of exotic tropical fruits and gourmet vegetables, which they grew and marketed fresh through their produce company Fresh King, Inc. However, with a little help from their friends, Bill Wagner and Doug Knapp, (both successful owners of their own wineries) the couple was able to create tropical fruit wines using local fruit they grew themselves. Ever since then, Schnebly Redland’s Winery and Brewery have used sustainable farming methods to create unique tropical fruit wines and beers and to promote the Redlands of Florida to tourists from all over. If you were unable to attend the City’s Cultural Event trip to Schnebly Redland’s Winery, the City already has its Fall Cultural Trip lineup ready and tickets are on sale now. Trips include Disney on Ice: Princesses and Heroes, Mai-Kai Dinner and Show, Chicago the Musical, Mamma Mia the Musical, a tour of Vizcaya’s Museum and Gardens, and a Starlit Dinner upon the City’s newly opened Newport Pier. For information on future events check the SIB Sun Community Newspaper, SIBTV Cable Channel 77, our quarterly Living Magazine which includes our Calendar of Programs and Events and the website at www.sibfl.net or for specific questions please contact the Cultural & Community Services Department at 305.792.1706.

Field trip to local police station still put smiles on faces of Sunny Isles Beach Kids

BY CHIEF FRED MAAS

One of the most pleasant chores of my day in the office is to experience the gleeful laughter and enthusiastic questions of “the little ones” who come to visit the police department for a field trip. For the past almost 15 years, this has been a regular practice for children of all ages and from all types of programs including our K-8 school, private day care programs, religious groups, etc. There is something special that attracts the

young ones to the wonderment of K-9’s, motorcycles, beach patrol ATV’s and the flashing red and blue lights of the uniform patrol car. During the tour, their minds are full of questions and ideas. They love receiving the junior police badge and seeing the facilities of the police department. To see their smiling faces as they see up close and personal the many tools of our trade and the officer’s equipment is worth the effort and time spent with them. Our most recent group was from the local day care “Smart Kids” and the group that came truly enjoyed their visit to their local police department where many made new friends.

Back to school safety tips and helpful hints BY CHIEF FRED MAAS

Summer is over, at least the vacation from school part. Our most precious resources (our children) are back to school and our main goal is their SAFETY and their EDUCATION. The following is offered as a helpful guide to making that happen: • Be cognizant and respectful of school zones when driving. 15 M.P.H. means just that. Children are careless and could dart out in between cars, etc so be prepared to stop suddenly and avert disaster. • NEVER, EVER, pass a school bus that is loading or unloading children, when its STOP SIGN and FLASHING LIGHTS are operational • Know where the school office is located, the cafeteria, the physical education

fields and your child’s classroom. Chances are that if anything ever happens, they will be at one of those locations. • If something should ever happen requiring your response or police response to an incident: STAY CALM. DO NOT ADD TO THE CHAOS BY PANICKING. RESPOND SAFELY AND CALMLY AND FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS OF POLICE, FIRE OR SCHOOL PERSONNEL who are on the scene. This may include a staging area or gathering point away from the school until the situation is resolved. • Finally, your child is in an exceptionally safe and highly rated school and environment. The school staff is one of the best. Do not take these measures as worrisome, but precautionary to insure the best possible outcome for your child, in the event it’s needed. Welcome Back.
