Story Time in the Snow Local storyteller spins ‘Frozen’ fairy tales

SPECIAL TO THE ABINGTON SUBURBAN
the teachers they have been telling a tall tale over the years and that even Walt Disney forgot to tell Druzella’s version.” Arcangelo has spent quite a few years recounting tales as part of the Festival of Ice’s Family Fun Faire activities. Previous years’ stories include “The Snowman,” “Druzella,” “Something from Nothing,” “Where the Wild Things Are” and “The Polar Express.” Each story correlated with the festival’s theme that year and Arcangelo is looking to follow that trend for her upcoming performance. “This year, the Festival of Ice’s theme is ‘Frozen Fairy Tales,’” she said. “So right after the parade, I will be doing two storytelling sessions of stories from ‘Frozen.’” “I dressed up [in costume] for ‘Druzella’ and ‘Where the Wild Things Are,’” she continued. “The other stories were done with props. I am working on a ‘Frozen’ costume for this year.” Ice Festival participants of all ages attend Arcangelo’s storytelling performances. Whether the listeners are 3 years old or 90, all are welcome to listen to a classic tale, a new story or a twist on an old favorite. Arcangelo revealed that her favorite part of storytelling is seeing the audience’s reactions to the tale. For her, the age range of the Festival of Ice crowd only adds to that excitement. “It’s quite an experience to see the reactions to my storytelling,” she said. “Especially with such a wide range of ages. It’s priceless.” The trick to her elaborate storytelling technique is to truly adopt the persona of the character she is playing. Not only does it add to the story’s depth, it’s also a lot of fun for her to take on another’s personality. “As for me,” she said, “once I start telling the story, I become the character. It’s marvelous to be able to jump into the Chris Arcangelo will spin “Frozen” fairy tales in keeping with the theme for the 2015 book and be that character.”
Once upon a time, in a land not so far from here, there lived a storyteller so captivating that people came from all around just to hear her tales. All those who wish to travel to a mystical land on an adventure filled with princesses, magic and happily-ever-afters can hop on their dragon, broomstick or enchanted carriage and head over to the Clarks Summit Festival of Ice on Friday, Feb. 13, where local storyteller Chris Arcangelo will spin stories at the annual Family Fun Faire at the Clarks Summit Borough Building, 304 S. State St., at 6 and 6:30 p.m. Arcangelo, who teaches at St. Gregory’s Early Childhood Center in Clarks Green, explained that storytelling allows her to bring her love for reading to a wider audience. “I’ve always enjoyed reading to my children and as a volunteer for the Abington Community Library,” she said. “Reading to children once a week for storytelling was rather exciting. From there, I was asked to do storytelling for different organizations and that was the beginning and start of my professional storytelling.” To bring her stories to life, Arcangelo often dresses the part of the bard or a main character in the story. “I usually dress up for stories, either as the character or the person telling the story,” she said. “There are also stories in which I just talk about the story in my own words.” She not only uses elaborate costumes, but also props and character voices for these roles. These added elements give the stories an entertaining, theatrical quality that the whole family can enjoy. One of Arcangelo’s favorite roles to get into is that of Druzella, the stepsister of Cinderella. “I like Druzella’s version of the story because it’s fun,” she said. “Druzella Clarks Summit Festival of Ice on Friday, Feb. 13, at 6 and 6:30 p.m. during the Family is exciting and has a lot of spunk. For many people, their dog or cat is their little prince or princess. Now, a new store in Clarks Summit hopes to put the “tails” in “fairy tales.” “Frozen Furry Tails” was created by Rebecca Martino, owner of Stately Pet Supply, 515 S. State St., as a way to allow the pets in her customer base to participate in the 2015 Clarks Summit Festival of Ice. The weekendlong event at the store will give owners the chance to display their pets in costume, either during the annual parade on Friday, Feb. 13, or for a Facebook-based costume competition or a private photography session. “I can’t tell you how excited and nervous I am about my first year in the festival,” Martino said. “My husband and I had a wedding that required little more than planning an appointment at the local court house. Coordinating large events is not my strong point, so I just hope to be able to do my best for the groups that stand to benefit.” Stately Pet Supply opened several months ago, combining Martino’s love for animals and her own experience where discovering a certain dog food saved her pit bull, Betsy, from a food allergy.
“In my search and investigations, I began to stumble upon the often unsettling truths about commercially-made pet foods,” Martino said. “While there are quite a few laws set to control ingredients, there are just as many laws that don’t exist. It can get pretty disgusting. My hope is that when you walk in my store, you can close your eyes and do a pinthe-tail on the food, and know that it’s likely worlds better in quality than the majority of commercial pet foods out there.” Martino said that she will host an all-day adoption event with the Griffin Pond Animal Shelter on Friday, Feb. 13, a second allday adoption event with the Northeast PA Pet Fund and Rescue and private mini photography sessions with Fetching Fido Photography on Sunday, Feb. 15. Proceeds from all of the events will benefit the shelter, rescue and for a new water line at the Abington Dog Park. The store will also host a variety of raffles throughout the weekend. “We have a unique opportunity here to really make a dent in fundraising for these organizations,” Martino said. “The pressure is on and we can’t wait to help!” For more information on Stately Pet Supply, visit statelypetsupply.com or call 570585-7387.
