Ice Sculptor Robert Higareda created a small blizzard as he carved an ice statue of an owl at State Street Grill in Clarks Summit in preparation for the 2005 Festival of Ice. About 15 sculptures were made that year. Since then, the event has grown to include more than 60 sculptures. Several live ice carving demonstrations will be given throughout the weekend.

COMIC CON TO FEATURE CELEBRITY GUEST STARS BY TERI LYON FOR THE ABINGTON SUBURBAN
A couple of professional wrestlers, a professional hockey player and awardwinning actress/model will headline the Ice Wars Comic Con Feb. 16 and 17 at the 15th-anniversary Clarks Summit Festival of Ice. The comic con, or comic book convention, will take place at Clarks Summit Elementary School, 401 West Grove Street, Clarks Summit. Door prizes, cosplays, panels and photo ops with special guests will be available Feb. 16 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Feb. 17 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission will be $10 for a oneday pass and $15 for a two-day pass. Admission is free for children under age 5. Tickets will be available at the door on both days.
Special guests will include Tony Atlas, World Wrestling Federation professional wrestler and bodybuilder; Chris Kotsopoulos, retired New York Rangers/Toronto Maple Leafs professional hockey player; Andrew “The Reinforcer” Anderson, “Gotham”TV series actor and independent wrestler; and Jessica Felice, award-winning actress and comic book model for Vampirella, Wonder Woman and others. Also attending will be comic book artists, writers and creators including Bob McLeod, artist/inker for various titles including “Star Wars,”“Hulk,” “Conan,” “Detective Comics,” “Wonder Woman,” “Titans” and “Spiderman”; Dave Sharpe, Mark McKenna, Dan Parent, Scott Beatty, Darren Auck, Tom Derenick, Jason Lenox, Chris Ring and independent creators. Additionally, the event will feature two
cosplays – performances of characters in costume – each day, one for adults and one for kids. A sports-entertainment panel also will be part of the event. Joseph Figured, event executive promoter who has been promoting comic book conventions for over 25 years in locales such as New York, New Jersey and Rhode Island, said the Clarks Summit Festival of Ice is the perfect venue for a comic con. He said, “The ice festival offers a great setting, awesome theme sculptures throughout the town, great places to visit and things to see and do!” Figured said the concept of a comic con is “to gather vendors and comic book creators together so that people can come to buy, sell and trade comic books and to meet the creators (writers, artists inkers, colorists, etc.) of the books. The
comic con has morphed over the last 10 plus years to also include celebrities, cosplayers and many more activities.” Figured noted that the comic con’s guest stars will be a big draw for fans. Convention attendees can meet, ask questions and take photographs with all of the celebrities and guests. Figured pointed out there is a “wide, wide range of interest with this type of event.” “The event offers numerous interests to young and older attendees. Younger attendees can meet Mr. Kotsopoulos and discuss how he became a professional hockey player and the benefits of the sport. Older and younger attendees can meet and have some vintage comics signed by some of the industry’s best creators such as veteran illustrator, Bob McLeod,” he said.
Chris Kotsopoulos One of the top defensive blueliners in the National Hockey League, Chris Kotsopoulos played nearly 500 games in the NHL during the 1980s, according to chriskotsopoulos.com. He played for the New York Rangers, Toronto Maple Leafs and Detroit Red Wings before retiring in 1990.
Andrew “The Reinforcer” Anderson Andrew Anderson graduated from St Peter’s College in 1989 with a degree in business administration, according to his Facebook page. Beginning his wrestling career in 1997, he is the first Juggalo Championship Wrestling (JCW) heavyweight champion, and a two-time East Coast Professional Wrestling (ECPW) tag champ. An actor, he has appeared in “The Wrestler” with Mickey Rourke and the “Gotham” television series, as well as television commercials. He is married with two daughters, Olivia and Hope, and stepson Ryan.
