The Pocono Mountains Visitors Bureau (PMVB) launched an anti-littering campaign called Pick Up the Poconos, aimed at cleaning up the highways of the Poconos. Here’s an update on the campaign: The PMVB team members have adopted two roadways, one in Pike County by the Lake Wallenpaupack Visitors Center, and one on Route 209 in Brodheadsville. The PMVB team picked up 30 bags of trash. At the first Pick Up the Poconos Day in Monroe County, 327 volunteers filled 741 trash bags of litter which weighed close to 4 tons, covering approximately 88 miles. The PMVB has hired Adopt A Highway Maintenance Corporation (AHMC) to clean six times per year along approximately 25 miles of Route 80 and Route 380. So far, the company has filled more than 1,448 bags

of litter. The funds for these pick-ups are financed solely by hotel tax dollars through the Visitors Bureau. The PMVB has recently extended the AHMC contract to include highway exits and entrances along routes 80 and 380 to begin this month. Pick Up the Poconos Day and AHMC combined have rid the environment of approximately 2,189 bags of litter. The PMVB is now asking organizations who are a part of special litter pick-up program to contact them to be included on Pick Up the Poconos and receive updates about the campaign, as well as future pick-up days. “Pick Up the Poconos is an ongoing program for the PMVB. It’s now in our DNA. We genuinely want to address the problem and effect change,” explained PMVB President and CEO, Chris Barrett.

‘Light and Sound’ at the Cooperage

First presented at the 2018 Scranton Fringe Festival, this original hybrid of live music and theatrical performance tells the story of a father and son taking a long delayed road trip while dealing with the fathers late-stage dementia. Equally heartwarming and haunting, “Light & Sound” combines live music, theatrical staging and
digital projection to craft a unique experience for its audiences. Co-created and starring New Orleans musician Daniel Amedee and New Vintage Ensemble member Conor Kelly O’Brien, this production is the final installment of the ensemble’s 2018 programming and marks their third season in a partnership between the Scranton-based ensemble and Honesdale-based non-profit. Daniel Amedee has been touring fulltime since 2012 and has performed in the US, Canada, Ireland and England and has worked with notables such as Noel Hogan (The Cranberries), Pat Spurgeon (Rogue
Wave), and Sylvain Carton (Beats Antique) to name a few. “We’re thrilled to offer theater at The Cooperage as part of our programming,” said Ryanne Jennings, executive director of The Cooperage Project. “The New Vintage Ensemble is an amazing group of talented individuals and this production is one you won’t want to miss.” Suggested donation: $8 in advance, $12 at the door to support The Cooperage Project’s continued educational programming. The Delaware Highlands Conservancy will hold an Eagle Watch volunteer training day on Saturday, Dec. 1, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Lackawaxen. New volunteers will meet at the Inn at Lackawaxen at 9am. Volunteers are trained to monitor and collect data about the large population of eagles that migrate to this region every winter. Volunteers also learn how to help the thousands of people who want to view the eagles in the safest and least intrusive manner, and share “Eagle Etiquette” tips. Volunteers are also needed to help staff the Visitor Center on weekends. Interact with like-minded eagle enthusiasts, without needing to be out in the cold. Binoculars, spotting scopes, training manuals, data forms and hand warmers are provided by the Conservancy. The winter Eagle Watch program runs through January and February, weekends only. Volunteers may cover morning or afternoon shifts. The main monitoring areas are the Mongaup Reservoir and the Delaware River at Minisink Falls and the Zane Grey Boat Launch at Lackawaxen. Advance registration for the Training Day is required. Send an email to info@delawarehighlands.org, or call 570-226-3164 or 845-583-1010. For more information, visit DelawareHighlands.org. Get a taste of vintage ports at a fraction of the price with a late-bottled vintage port such as Dow’s 2012 LBV Porto. Full of cassis and licorice, the raisiny sweetness dissolves with tannins in the surprisingly dry finish, leaving a smooth port that is neither hot with alcohol nor cloying. It’s so dangerously good and well-balanced that you’ll want to drink more than you should. (A port serving is 2 to 4 ounces.) Find the prior release, 2011, for $25. ★★★★ 1/2

“KAIDOKU”
SUDOKU!
Each of the 26 letters of the alphabet is represented in this grid by a number between 1 and 26. Using letter frequency, word-pattern recognition, and the numbers as your guides, fill in the grid with well-known English words (HINT: since a Q is always followed by a U, try hunting down the Q first). Only lowercase, unhyphenated words are allowed in kaidoku, so you won’t see anything like STOCKHOLM or LONG-LOST in here (but you might see AFGHAN, since it has an uncapitalized meaning, too).
