Horning: Still a big deal Lost: Rediscovered run game exciting to watch • From Page 4
should not put him up against a world-beater defense. Just when you think Bedlam doesn’t have a leg to stand on, it’s full of stories. Because the Sooners have struggled so much, you have to wonder if Josh Heupel might be coaching his last regular season game. Or, the way the coaching carousel works, if some new coach wants to fill out his staff before the end of December, maybe even his last game, period? After that and Gundy’s seeming volatility, you’ve got two players both fan bases can’t wait to see play their next game. A potential savior quarterback on one side and the heir to Peterson on the Sooners, and probably one, in Perine, unlikely to embarrass his sport or alma mater anytime soon or
distant. That the subplots have become bigger than the seasons each program has not really enjoyed this year is a sort of subplot in itself. A year ago, the hubbub was how the Bedlam game had, low and behold, become OU’s most important game each season, and not because losing it could seriously damage the program, but because the road to Big 12 supremacy, seemingly, now ran through Norman and Stillwater. Who knew then that it really ran through Waco and Fort Worth? OU should never drop too far as long as Stoops is around, though reports the Sooners were back to being a top-five program after last season’s Sugar Bowl were clearly exaggerated, and the Sooners still appear to be a quarterback, a couple receivers and an improved
defense away. Who knows about OSU. There’s still nothing about the sight and sounds coming out of Gundy that stir the soul. What Cowboy Nation must struggle dealing with is, while Gundy’s track record should inspire confidence, live and in person, the Poke coach doesn’t. So who knows about the health of the Cowboys’ corral. Ditto for the Sooners, though win this Bedlam game and one more and it’s still another 10-win season and nobody’s yet worried about Perine leaving after one collegiate season, anyway. Soon, they’ll play. Afterward, the picture’s bound to change again. At the very least, there’s no shortage of angles from which to play witness. games. It was OU’s last outing, a 44-7 rout of Kansas, in which everything seem to click. Perine rushed for an NCAA FBS record 427 yards and five touchdowns on just 34 carries. That shaky defense held the Kansas offense scoreless. The offensive line coupled with Perine have at least taken some of the gloom out of the season. “It just great to have a great O-line, great fullbacks and tight ends,” left tackle Tyrus Thompson said. “You add a great running back to that situation and it does a lot of tremendous things in the run game.” Emphasizing that run
• From Page 5 coach Bob Stoops’ tenure and one that elicited boos from fans the like of which haven’t been heard since the John Blake era. That was undoubtedly the low point in the season. It’s the two games since that have put the Sooners on an uptick. OU turned — begrudgingly at times — to its offense and running back Samaje Perine. With that move, the Sooners’ fortunes have changed. Perine has rushed for 1,428 yards this season. Nearly half of it has come in the last two
game in a way OU hasn’t in nearly a decade was the late-season discovery. It’s currently averaging 6.3 yards per carry. It’s the most by a Sooner team since 1971 and the most explosive team in the program’s storied wishbone era. The Sooners will ride that offensive line and Perine into Bedlam. There’s a wide-spread feeling if they would’ve hitched themselves to that wagon earlier in the season, it would have a lot more at stake against Oklahoma State. Better late than never.
