‘BULL DOG BITES’ SET FOR SATURDAY The annual Bull Dog Bites event is set for Saturday in the Columbus North cafeteria. The event runs from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., and each Columbus North team provides servings of items. There will be appetizers, main dishes, side dishes, desert items and beverages available. Tickets are available for $20 each, and a person may redeem each ticket for 10 servings from the items that are available. Proceeds from the event go to the Bull Dog Booster Club, which helps fund uniforms and other needs for Columbus North athletics.
M
addox, Meyer & Clark. Sounds like the name of a law firm, but Columbus North baseball hopes that trio of right-handed pitchers can key the Bull Dogs to an outstanding season in 2019. “Collectively, they’re the strength of our team,” CN coach Ben McDaniel said of senior Parker Maddox, senior Jakob Meyer and junior Casper Clark. “That’s known not only around the city, but around the state. We can go to any of the three of them in any game and know they will get the job done.” Maddox, an Ohio University signee, was 3-2 with a 2.39 ERA and 49 strikeouts in 41.0 innings last season. As a sophomore, he was 3-4 with a 3.57 ERA and 56 strikeouts in 53.0 innings. That came after a freshman season where he was 2-4 with 17 strikeouts in 24 innings. “Parker’s strength is his velocity and his competitive nature,” McDaniel said. “We’ve clocked him up to 92 (mph) in the off season, and he has consistently improved his velocity during his four years. He is in the weight room constantly and takes care of his body. He hates to lose. He wants the ball in every big game.” Meyer, signed to attend the University of Evansville, went 3-4 and posted a 1.85 earned-
run average and 61 strikeouts in 49.1 innings last season. As a sophomore, he had a 3-2 record with 36 strikeouts in 27.0 innings. “Jakob’s control and breaking ball are what separate him from most,” the coach said. “He can throw a breaking ball at any count and hit spots. His mental approach is excellent. He does not let things get to him. He’s always got a smile on his face. He’s always supporting his teammates. It takes a special individual to always have a positive attitude.” Clark, an Indiana University recruit, was 6-1 with a 1.49 ERA and 46 strikeouts in 47.0 innings last season. In 2017, Clark was 5-1 with two saves, a 0.87 ERA and 29 strikeouts in 32.0 innings. “Casper has a mix of both Parker and Jakob,” McDaniel said. “He’s competitive. He’s got a positive attitude. He wants to go get guys. Casper’s velocity has continued to climb, and he has a breaking ball that he can throw at any time. At 6-6, he has room to put on some additional mass and velocity. But he is a competitor, and he works. We’re reaping the benefit of the work he has put in over the past offseason.” Together, their mission this season is to keep opponents off the base paths and to prevent foes from getting all the way around. In baseball parlance, they are a trio of stoppers: Maddox, Meyer & Clark.

Kirr, Marbach & Company, LLC has been privately owned and independently managed since our predecessor was founded in Columbus, Ind. on May 1, 1975. Over those decades, we have experienced numerous bull and bear markets, economic booms and busts and have seen many investment fads come and go. Through it all, our guiding principle has been that we do only one thing - manage wealth - and we manage the wealth of our clients as if it were our own. We are big believers in ‘eating our own cooking’ and invest your money with the same care and passion as we invest our own. Whether you have $1,000 or $10 million to invest, we would be grateful for the opportunity to invest alongside you.

BASEBALL: YOUNG BUT EXPERIENCED BULL DOGS LOOKING FOR SUCCESS
A
young but experienced lineup returns with quality at the plate, on the mound and in the field. Thus, the Columbus North baseball team is looking to be a strong group in 2019. The Bull Dogs opened the season in style, posting a 13-2 victory at Silver Creek on Saturday. Sophomore Austin Bode hit a two-run home run and classmate Kyler McIntosh added a double and three RBIs, while four pitchers combined for 13 strikeouts while allowing five hits. Junior Casper Clark was the winner, striking out eight and yielding no runs and two hits in four innings. “We have a lot of youth and we have a lot of talented youth,” CN coach Ben McDaniel told The Republic. “We’re looking forward to a strong defense and, hopefully, we can find the offensive production to match.” Upcoming games include four contests in the Super Prep Invitational this weekend in the Louisville area and three games in the Prep Baseball Report Midwest Select Invitational on April 12-13 at Grand Park in Westfield. Other key games in April are April 20 at Roncalli, April 23 against Southport, April 26 against Cathedral, April 27 against Terre Haute North and April 30 at Noblesville. Bode led the team last season with a .411 average with 10 doubles, two home runs and 23 RBIs as
the Bull Dogs went 18-10. Junior Adam Chapman hit .380 with three doubles and 17 RBIs, while Clark hit .338 with four doubles, two home runs and 17 RBIs. Others seeking to contribute more as hitters this season are junior Homare Takauchi (.273), junior Grant Trinkle (.249), senior Parker Maddox (.242), senior Konner Stahl, senior Devon Rodgers and McIntosh plus fellow sophomores Blake Huffman, Reese Harmon and Hayden McDaniel. Others vying for playing time are junior Pedro Munoz and sophomores Aaron Rork, Blake Stevens and Jacob Bailey. TURNING THE CORNER: Adam Chapman (13) rounds third base en route to Clark, Maddox and senior Jakob scoring in a game in 2018. Chapman hit .380 with three doubles and 17 RBIs last season. Meyer headline a capable pitching staff. Clark went 6-1 last season with a 1.49 earned run average and also could see time on the mound. 46 strikeouts in 47.0 innings. Meyer was 3-4 with a “We expect pitching to be a strength with 1.85 ERA and 61 strikeouts in 49.1 innings. Maddox three Division I arms and guys who have a ton of went 3-2 with a 2.39 ERA and 49 strikeouts in 41.0 experience for us,” McDaniel said, alluding to Clark innings. Trinkle, Chapman, Harmon, Rodgers and (Indiana), Maddox (Ohio University) and Meyer Stahl look to complement the Bull Dogs’ big three. (Evansville) as D-I recruits. “We are trying to find a Freshmen Will Baker, Zach Wager and Alex McComb fourth pitcher to add to the rotation.”

SOFTBALL: INFLUX OF TALENT LOOKS TO PROPEL BULL DOGS TO IMPROVED EFFORT
C
olumbus North softball is looking for a big step forward in 2019 as coach Ron McDonald points to an influx of talent joining some quality returnees as reasons for optimism. Junior Sierra Norman, senior Bailey Lofton and junior Lily Hurt headline the veterans. Norman hit .508 last season with four doubles, six home runs and 21 RBIs to pace a 5-16 squad. Lofton hit .491 with seven doubles, seven home runs and 27 RBIs, while Hurt hit .333 with one home run and nine RBIs. Other holdovers include junior Brooke Bruin (.270), senior Brooke Rice (.255) and Jenna Fath as well as sophomores Haylee Acton, Meghan Waggoner and Aden Voss. Those joining the group include freshmen Peri Foust, Rachel Cowan, Alexia Heafner, Emalee Heafner, Lucy Norman and Lillian Mackey. Foust and Cowan figure to join Waggoner as pitchers, while the Heafner sisters and Lucy Norman look to play the infield. Mackey could play outfield or infield. “We ought to be pretty fun to watch this year,” McDonald told The Republic. “We have speed, we have pitching, we have defense. Expectations are pretty high on the freshmen coming in. This year’s class is a really good class. The next few years, we ought to be pretty good. We just have to play to our potential.” The winner thus far has been rain, as three earlyseason games have been postponed. Thus, the CN opener now will be Thursday at Shelbyville. CN faces East Central on Friday at home in a rescheduled game, then follows with home games on April 8 against Whiteland, April 9 against Seymour and April

11 against Franklin Central. The Bull Dogs compete April 13 in the Brown County Invitational, visit Columbus East on April 15 and face Bloomington North on April 16 and Southport on April 18 in Conference Indiana games. They complete the month on April 20 in the Center Grove Invitational, April 25 at Perry Meridian, April 27 at
Silver Creek and April 29 at Edinburgh. “Our goal is to win the conference and win the sectional if we can,” McDonald told the newspaper. “We think we’re right in the mix. We think it’s up for grabs this year. The last two years have been pretty tough, but we’re where we think we should be with the program.”

BOYS GOLF: BIEKER, BULL DOGS HAVE OPTIMISTIC OUTLOOK FOR 2019 SEASON
O
ptimism is high for the Columbus North boys golf team, which returns virtually everyone from last season and adds some quality freshmen. Thus, coach Doug Bieker feels the Bull Dogs have a shot for a special season. “If the kids do what they should do, we’ll be right there again at the regional and hopefully make it to state this time,” Bieker told The Republic. “The seniors are going to have to lead a little bit, and if they lead how they’re capable of leading, I think we can do more than just get there.” The Bull Dogs opened the 2019 last Saturday, placing third in the Seymour Invitational with a 332 total. Sophomore Luke VanDeventer led the way with an 81, while senior Drew Smith shot an 82 and freshman Luke Schneider carded an 83. Senior Jackson Kerber contributed an 86, and sophomore Jacob Niedbalski had an 87. Upcoming meets include a three-team meet April 10 at Jennings County with Providence, a dual meet April 11 against Franklin Central at Harrison Lake Country Club and the Mater Dei Invitational on April 13 at Victoria National Golf Club in Newburgh. The Bull Dogs also will host Bloomington South on April 22, Bedford North Lawrence and Zionsville in a 2018 BOYS GOLF SCHEDULE

Also, “Both of those two freshmen have shown early senior Reese Moore signs to compete and push the seniors from last had an 87.13 average, VanDeventer was at 87.80 season,” Bieker told the newspaper. “I do think we RESULTS have a little more depth this year than in years past.” and senior Cameron

TRACK: BULL DOGS OPEN OUTDOOR SEASON TUESDAY AT BLOOMINGTON SOUTH
A
competitive indoor season has created optimism for a good outdoor season for the Columbus North track teams. So says CN coach Lou Sipe as the Bull Dogs prepare for their outdoor season opener on Tuesday at Bloomington South. The Bull Dogs follow by hosting the Columbus North Invitational and sending some athletes to the Greensburg Relays on Saturday. The remainder of April includes meets on April 9 at Seymour, select athletes competing April 12 in the Franklin Central Showcase, an April 18 home meet with Columbus East, the Talon Relays on April 20 at Brown County, a three-team meet on April 23 with Shelbyville at East Central and the Conference Indiana meet on April 26 at Bloomington North. “We’ve been fortunate to have some good weather days for practice,” Sipe said. “I’m excited to see where we are at and see
the work pay off.” Boys to watch include seniors Luke Riley and Hunter Spalding plus junior Daveed Jolley and freshman Qwenton Bolden in the sprints; senior Noah Kestler and junior Ben Malone in the hurdles; seniors Sam Horak and John Sluys, junior Carson Littrell and freshmen Matt Newell and Reese Kilbarger-Stumpff in distances; Jolley and Bolden in the long jump; sophomore Preston Terrell in the high jump; and freshman Tucker Smith in both the shot put and discus. Headliners for the girls include junior Carley Finke, sophomores La’Monica Smith and Helena Ho and freshman Kylah Lawson in the sprints; junior Sami Heathcote in the hurdles; sophomore Erin Rawlins in the 400; senior Sydney Geckler, junior Olivia Morlok and sophomore Mackenzie Barnett in distances; Finke and Lawson in long jump; Heathcote and

junior Adrienne Salemme in pole vault; and sophomore Emily Herndon in the throws. Salemme and Tucker Smith each posted a podium finish in the Hoosier State Relays indoor meet on March 23at Indiana Unversity. Salemme tied for fourth in the girls’ pole vault at 11-0, and Smith placed sixth in the boys’ shot put at 52-11. Others in that meet were Terrell, tied for 10th in the boys’ high jump at 6-0; Herndon, 15th in the girls’ shot put at 36-5¼; and Lawson, 16th in the girls’ long jump at 16-2½. “We were able to do some good things in the indoor season,” Sipe said. “We took five individuals to HSR and a couple of relays qualified, but the timing of (spring) break prevented them from going that day. “Overall, the indoor season was a good springboard to get us ready for the outdoor season.”

GIRLS TENNIS: BULL DOGS LOOK TO FIELD A POWERFUL LINEUP IN 2019
T
wo strong freshmen combined with a quality group of returnees should allow Columbus North girls tennis to field a strong team in 2019. A year ago, the Bull Dogs went 15-6 in dual matches, reached the semi-state and saw then-sophomore Eva Chevalier and then-senior Madelyn Sanders reach the semifinal round of the doubles state tournament. “Never knowing exactly what other teams have, we feel we can be one of the best teams in Conference Indiana,” CN coach Kendal Hammel. “In the (postseason), we will look to get to the semi-state. Then, 2019 GIRLS TENNIS ROSTER
depending on how the draw goes, we might have a shot to get to state. We’re as good as or perhaps a bit better than we were last year.” This time, with the season opening Tuesday with a home dual against Center Grove, Hammel is projecting a lineup with freshman Ashlie Wilson at No. 1 singles, Chevalier at No. 2 singles, freshman Tiffany Fu at No. 3 singles and as many as eight others vying for the four doubles positions. Front-runners for doubles spots are seniors Shweta Srinivasan and Servane Cloteaux, junior Ali Bergman and sophomore Jaline Tay. Others competing are juniors Paige Bishop, Cassidy May, Mariana Martinez and Erica Song. “Because we have not had a lot RECORD of chances to mix things in doubles 0-0 yet, we may lean toward girls who

played varsity last year for now,” Hammel said. “That’s not saying that the other four won’t have chances to bump up into varsity.” Wilson and Chevalier appear set in the top two singles spots. “Ashlie has been playing tennis all her life,” Hammel said. “She comes in seasoned even though a freshman. She has played more overall than anyone on the team, kind of like Caroline Hedrick or Allie Smith and others. Even though she is young, she has experience that will carry her. She’s tall, lanky, a fighter. She will win some points.” Hammel noted that Chevalier could have played singles last season, but pairing her with Sanders was a good choice. “Eva’s skills are good,” the coach said. “And she will improve as the season progresses.”

BULL DOG BULLETIN
APRIL 1-30, 2019
NEWS: YOUNG HIRED AS VARSITY COACH FOR COLUMBUS NORTH GIRLS SOCCER
D
avid Young has been appointed varsity girls’ soccer coach at Columbus North, Bull Dogs athletic director Jeff Hester announced on March 11. That makes Young just the fourth CN girls’ soccer coach in program history. Young follows Todd Schutte, Mike Spock and Derek Stewart in the role. Schutte directed the team from 19931998, Spock from 1999-2011 and Stewart from 2012-2018. Young was the boys’ JV coach last season at Columbus East, and he previously was the girls’ head coach and a boys’ assistant coach at Franklin Community High School. “I am delighted about the opportunity to work in the Columbus North program,” said Young, who also coaches in the Columbus Express club program. “With its tradition of success, it long has been one that I have admired. Derek and the coaches who preceded him have done a great job.” Hester said he is pleased that the coaching search resulted in identifying Young. “I liked the vision he expressed for the program and the time that he will be willing to invest,” Hester said. “In addition, he has quality experience in being a varsity head coach at
Franklin Community, and everyone there spoke highly of him.” Young attended Franklin College and has worked in Columbus as an engineer for AT&T for about 20 years. He resides in Franklin and began his coaching career in 2005 in a youth program for the Franklin Church of Christ. He then became coach of the Franklin Community Middle School boys’ team for the 2011 and 2012 season before working as an assistant with the Franklin High boys in 2013, 2014 and 2015, helping the Grizzly Cub to a 30-18-4 record. Young then was named the Franklin girls’ head coach, guiding the Cubs to 7-8-2 and 4-12-0 marks in 2016 and 2017. He was the Columbus East boys’ JV coach last fall and helped the Olympians’ varsity to an 8-8-1 season. “When (the Columbus North girls’ position) opened, I talked with several people about it, prayed about it and decided it was for me,” Young said. “There is a lot of talent in the program, and hopefully we can continue the winning and make a difference in the community. I am very excited to get started.” Young and his wife, Jennifer, have four children – E.J., 18, Grant, 16, Branson, 15, and Alyah, 9.
