BULL DOG ADVICE Students and grads share their advice for the incoming freshmen

“Really plan things ahead and try and get things done early as soon as possible. Having good time management habits early on will be so useful in your sophomore, junior, and senior years: those years tend to be very busy, and freshman year is generally, in my opinion, the least chaotic of the four.

“Try not to stress too much about juggling school, work, sports, and your social life. You have plenty of time to try and figure out all of it, put the main part about high school is to learn new things and to have fun.”

“For freshmen, I recommend getting a planner to track your assignments and important events. It will make organization much simpler and easier.”

sophomore Paige Terry

Wil Littrell (CN ‘22)

Matthew Liu (CN ‘22)

“My advice to incoming freshman is to keep a planner and make sure to turn stuff in on time. You can pass every class an get an A in most if you just don’t have any late your missing work . Also get involved with a club or sport no matter how small.”

Evan Carr (CN ‘22)

“My advice for incoming freshman is to get freshman is to get involved in whatever sparks your interest. It is the best way to meet new friends and find people with similar interest to you. I would also suggest get started on your senior project early because it will help you in the long run.”

Ella Furber (CN ‘22)

“I would say the most the most useful thing that I wish I knew would have known is to be open to new things and try your best . No one is expecting perfection and high school really is not scary as you think.”

sophomore Anabell Hunter

“Advice I would give to upcoming freshman mange your time wisely get know the people in your classes, and get all your counselors better.”

sophomore Hank Lin

Don’t be afraid to ask for help: If you’re struggling with certain material on the syllabus, reach out to the particular teacher and ask if you can go over the problem areas after class. Make time for your friends: You shouldn’t feel like you have to isolate yourself all the time in order to succeed in your classes. Maintain a regular sleep schedule: You should try to get at least seven hours of sleep every night. Your peers might brag about pulling all-nighters, but that does not mean you have to.

TIPS FOR THE HALLWAY • Stay on the right side of the hallway • Make wide left turns to avoid bumping into others • The first two digits for locker numbers correspond to the first two digits of hallway numbers.

“It was a lot easier than I expected since most of the classes are together in their own hallways. It was one of the things I was worried about the most but it was so easy.”

junior Charlotte Loheide 7

WHERE DO I GO IF I.. ?

A guide to stay organized and be prepared for your first year as a Bull Dog

2

3

4 1 1....Have tech issues? If your laptop is not turning on, broken or you're having issues, you can go to the tetch oggive in the 1600 hallway for help. 2....Get lost? You can ask other students and teachers for help. There are also maps on some of the walls that might be able to help you. 3....Need a texttbook or supplies? If you need some last minute things for school or a project, you can go to the bookstore in the mai hallway off the commons. 4....Feel sick/Get injured? When you feel sick or get injured, you can go to the clinic in the middle of the 1600 hallway.

8

5....Receive a pass or have other questions? If you receive a pass during class, it will usually tell you where to go and at what time during the school day. Most passes come from the Counseling Office, Dean's Office or the Main office. You should also have a pass any time you leave a class.

5

6....Need to check my grades? You can download Powerschool to check your grades at any time. Ask the counseling center for information to log in. 7....Want to study during Resource? All students need a reader’s pass to go to the library during resource. Reader’s passes can be used during resource, but otherwise students need a pass to come to the library.

BULL DOG CRA-ZE From the excitement of the first day of school to the stress of finals week, North students and staff share quotes and tidbits about what it means to be a Bull Dog by Mila Esposito and Aleigha Hill

A

ATHLETICS

“All of our teams are competing for Conference and Sectional Championships. If you compare our school to others in the area, I think hands down our level of success in multiple sports outweighs a lot of schools.” coach Joshua Blankenship

C

CAFETERIA

While freshmen are not allowed off-campus, they generally find spots in or around the cafeteria to claim as their own. “The best seat in the cafeteria for me has to consist of sitting with the people I talk to frequently.” sophomore Kimia Louyindoula

E

ELECTIONS

At the beginning of the year, freshmen have the option to run for Student Assembly or student class officer. “In order to run for the elections, you have to fill out a form, and then we create a list of people for each of the positions, and the student assembly narrows it down to three people for each spot. Then we send out those names for each position and the school gets to vote.” sophomore Kyleigh Wolf

10

B

BULL DOG PANTRY

North’s Bull Dog Pantry is a great resource for anyone in the school or community. “Bull Dog Pantry is funded mainly by Gleaners food pantry. We started six or seven years ago. They give us a certain amount of money every month that we’re allowed to use to buy groceries. Once or twice a month we have a distribution where students can come and get the groceries for free. After the students have been through we serve people from the community.” English teacher Barbara Handt

D

DIPLOMA

“You can either graduate with a general diploma, a Core 40 diploma, or a diploma with academic or technical honors or both. The Core 40 diploma, which almost all students complete, consists of 40 credits, some of which involve required courses in various topics like Math and Science. However, for academic honors, it requires around 10 more credits and a certain GPA. Technical Honors, on the other hand, requires dual credit or industry certification and is aimed at people who took a career pathway in high school.” Rishi Rao (CN ‘22)

F

FINALS

Finals week is generally the last week of each semester. While each person studies differently, certain habits are essential for everyone. “I would advise students to prepare for finals and prioritize which classes you know will be more difficult.” Tiffany Fu (CN ‘22)

G I

H

J

K

GRADES

While high school is about having fun, it’s also about how your choices set you up for later in life. While some things in high school are outside of your control, grades are things that aren’t. “Grades are important because they help with GPA and show your work ethic. You should care since they carry on and colleges look at them.” sophomore Annabelle Sun

HOMECOMING

North crowns a Homecoming king and queen each year for the Homecoming parade. “Winning Homecoming king was surreal, but honestly I think my mom was more excited than I was. I’m just glad to be honored as a part of a long-standing tradition.” Zane Glick (CN ‘22)

ITSLEARNING

As with all of BCSC, Columbus North High School utilizes Itslearning. “Itslearning is an extension of our classroom, like a filing cabinet with extra resources. It helps teachers support students by providing digital materials that can be accessed anytime from anywhere with a Wi-Fi connection, so it makes learning possible at all times of day (or night). I try to organize my itslearning page in order of the most recent or most relevant unit we are studying, and I always upload digital copies of everything we do in class. Students always have the option in my class of doing an online version rather than just paper/pencil. The most common materials I add to itslearning are reading schedules, audio book files, and discussion threads. English teacher David Spencer

JOURNALISM

North’s journalism department is the backbone behind the school magazine, yearbook and news network. “If students want to be in a class that involves a lot of communication, journalism is the way to go. Each of our staffs have several different roles, so it is easy to find what fits you the most. There is truly something for everyone.” Michaela Brown (CN ‘22)

KEY CLUB

“Key Club is a student-led organization that aims to help others through community service. Members are provided with several opportunities to directly help the community, such as volunteering at Love Chapel, the Mill Race Marathon, and more.” Key Club is also a great way to get your community service hours done before your senior year. Anushka Nair (CN ‘22)

L

LOG YEARBOOK

“I think that students should buy a yearbook because it is a great item to be able to look back on in the future. It is full of pictures and stories that will bring back a load of memories as we grow older. North’s yearbook includes features of almost all students and events that happen each year. We try to incorporate as many students and events as possible so we have a completely inclusive book.” KJ Ely (CN ‘22)

MUSIC

The Columbus North music program is a draw to incoming freshmen. We have a diverse spread of music programs for everyone to join. “There are several options for someone interested in music, such as band, choir, and the spring musical… Both the marching band and concert band have consistently been one of the top programs in the state.” Eshaan Mehta (CN ‘22)

ONCE A BULL DOG

“Several years ago I was fortunate to speak with a student who graduated from CNHS in 2005. In the conversation she shared how much CNHS had prepared her for life after high school. She mentioned how proud she was to have been a Bull Dog. My response was a phrase I’d used before at a previous school with a change of mascots - ‘Once a Bull Dog, Always a Bull Dog.’ I truly believe that each student takes a piece of CNHS with them and every student leaves a piece of them self at CNHS.” principal David Clark

Q

NORTH VS. EAST

“I have been able to go to the North vs. East game since I was in middle school. Every single one of the games has been very crowded and loud. For every game the student section dresses up for a theme, but for the North vs. East game they go all out. Everyone wants their school to win and it gets very competitive.” senior Dezyrae Sharpe

PBIS

“The point of PBIS is to reward and encourage positive behaviors and attitudes, which is a focus at CNHS. In my classroom, I encourage my students to find the best in each other so that we can help each other improve. It is a process, and it works!” science teacher Stacey Doub

QUARTER RAIDERS

Before Spring Break, Quarter Raiders- composed of upperclassmen from Student Assembly- go around the school to collect money for Riley Children’s Hospital. “What I like about Quarter Raiders is the act of raising money for a good cause and having fun doing it.” senior Daniel Utterback

R

THREE R’S

“Respect, responsibility, and relationships (or the three R’s) are the key PBIS components at Columbus North High School. Respect others and your surroundings. Be responsible for yourself and your actions. Build positive relationships with peers and adults. Keeping the three R’s in the forefront of your mind will not only help you navigate high school, but will set you up for a lifetime of success.” dean Brelyn Nolting

STUDENT ASSEMBLY

“Student Assembly is super fun because you are able to do all sorts of different things like decorate for formal, make your class float, can drive, etc. It is also fun because you are able to get to know other people from your own grade and other grades. There aren’t too many time commitments that come with student assembly, the biggest thing that takes much time is can drive, which is almost every day, but it is still tons of fun. I would definitely recommend for anyone to join it.” sophomore Olivia Mantooth

UNIFIED TRACK

Unified Track is a sport that anyone can join. Besides being a way to make friends, it offers many of the same events as Track & Field does. Each person can have their own favorites and make their own memories. “I like doing the 4X1.” junior Lydia Andrews

TIME MANAGEMENT

Time management is the key to having a good high school experience. People have different ways to manage their time, but there are some ways that are necessary. “I make sure to not procrastinate my work. I make sure I have everything written down on my planner so then I can plan my week. If I have a lot of work I try to make sure I manage my time well that day. It is a handful, but you get used to it after a while.” senior Sid Kamble

VENDING MACHINES

North offers a variety of packaged foods in vending machines throughout the school. “I usually go to the vending machines about three times a week, and it’s usually during lunch and in the mornings. Try to stay away from the vending machines because they’re a waste of money.” sophomore Keyshon Osbourne

WINTER FORMAL

While Prom is only for juniors and seniors, Winter Formal is dance that everyone from all grades can attend. “It’s nice to see everyone dressed up and having fun dancing. It’s also nice seeing all your friends there.” senior Gunnar Noble

X Z XC

Y

‘YO YO BULL DOGS’

‘Yo Yo Bull Dogs’ is a phrase coined by principal David Clark during a pep rally several years ago. At North, it has come to symbolize great success and achievement, but the first time you hear it can be confusing. “I figured it must have been some kind of school spirit thing. It represents optimism about our school.” sophomore Cole Stevens

North’s Cross Country program has been one of the top programs in the state. In the 2021-2022 season, the boys’ team was third in the state and the girls were number one. “Cross country is one of those sports where you get out exactly what you put in, so if you work hard every day you will succeed time and time again.” senior Clayton Guthrie

ZEN

High school gets stressful, so learning how to wind down can be helpful. “I guess if I feel overwhelmed with something, I’ll just take a step back, take a break and get my thoughts in order. Then I try to break the thing that is making me frustrated into smaller, more manageable pieces.” sophomore Rhea Jain

STAYING CONNECTED Students involved in student publications talk about what it’s like to be on staff

by Kandice Seward design and photos by Grace Wheatley “The best part of being on staff for me is being able to got to various school events that I wouldn’t have access to or even hear about if I wasn’t involved with them. I love being able to go and take video or photos at an event and then later being able to put together a final product.”

“Being on staff has changed my high school experience in many ways. It’s helped build my communications and editing skills in many ways. It’s been a super positive experience and is something that I have relly enjoyed being a part of.”

“Triangle is one of the classes that I look forward to every day. I am also more aware of what’s going on around me because of journalism. You just have to know what’s happening in the world around you to be a good journalist and that is something that I like about the class.”

“My favorite memory of being on staff was always being in the publications room, taking pictures/ videos back in the studio, and just meeting new people from all the different staffs.”

junior Claire Davis

junior Alex Osbourn

Triangle is the student newspaper. It comes out once every month and contains information on sports, events going on at school, and stories about students at North.

14

Log is the school yearbook. It covers everything that happens during the school year and goes more in depth with student life. To order a yearbook you can go to www.orderthebook. com or you can fill out a form and turn it in to room 1507.

SENIOR PROJECT “I strongly encourage underclassmen to get a head start on job shadowing and service learning requirements for their Senior Project. There are many ideas for service learning on the Senior Project website. For job shadowing, ideally the student should select a career that interests them and they want to learn more about.”

“For me, when thinking about graduating with Academical Honors, I would definitely advise for freshmen to consider taking an AP class sophomore year. This will definitely help you have an idea of what AP classes look like and also you’ll be able to be a little bit more relaxed your junior year.”

Katherine Rumsey (CN’22)

“I would encourage students to explore their options Freshman year. PCC is a great introduction to C4 classes and will hopefully provide students with information they need to make a decision on which pathway interests them most. The C4 department/teachers are a great resource for information on their courses and your counselors are also happy to talk to you about your options.”

Emily Tucker (CN Counselor)

DE-STRESS, DON’T DISTRESS Entering high school can be stressful at first for many students. These tips were the ones students and teachers found most helpful to manage stress in healthy and productive ways.

TAKE A BREAK

GET SOME EXERCISE Physical exercise releases endorphins, which are chemically proven to reduce stress.

Getting 8 to 10 hours of sleep, the recommended amount for teenagers, and taking a few breaks while working will make you more productive and decrease your stress levels.

SELF-CARE Taking a bath or sitting quietly for a few moments can help clear your head and sort out your thoughts. Using scented bath bombs [left] can serve as an alternative form of aromatherapy.

MAKE A TO-DO LIST Planning out a schedule for your activities, homework, and extracurriculars will keep you organized and prevent you from being overwhelmed.

MAKE SOME TEA Herbal tea, such as chamomile and mint, can calm nerves, reduce stress, and better health.

WHAT EMOJI ARE YOU? Would you rather stay in or go to a party?

Do you often get lost in thought?

PARTY!

Party, but only with close friends.

All the time.

Sometimes.

I prefer to stay home.

I was invited?

Maybe two times a month.

Never.

Do you like books or movies better?

Would you rather win a game by cheating or not win at all?

Movies are more exciting.

I prefer movies but I like books.

I have to win, my team is counting on me.

I prefer books but I like movies.

Books have more detail.

Just give up.

Do you like change and learning new things? I don’t like change. Sure, I can handle change.

20

Answer each question and remember what color your answer was. At the end tally up your colors. The color that you had the most of, is the color of the box your emoji is in.

Tie with the other team. Lose and don’t cheat.

Do you like working with people?

It’s not my favorite thing. but its okay.

Yes, of course!

I can tolerate it.

Love it!

No.

I hate people.

Y

ou're crazy and a joy to be around. You have a goofy side and often make friends easily. You probably love to entertain people and make them laugh. You’re optimistic and like a good adventure. Let your natural positivity shine through, but know that it’s ok to be stressed out from time to time.

Y

ou’re a very loving and caring person who gets very compassionate about everything you do. You love making people happy, and you love lending a hand to people in need. You’re the caretaker of your friend group and always have great advice. Taking your own advice could be an easy way to get through your first year of high school problem free.

Y

ou are a natural peacemaker. You’re easily relaxed and take life as it comes. You don’t see any need to stress out because that only makes things worse. Take things seriously from time to time, but always remember to have fun and relax.

Y

ou love tradition and always have your opinions made up. My friend, you have your life together compared to the rest of us. You’re very organized and enjoy meeting new people within your comfort zone. Traditions and rules are great but don’t be afraid to try different things and put yourself out there.
