Presidential Corner... The View From Here....

~ by Peter Bugden, President, LNS

Mader. The glue that holds the crew together, of course, is your Executive Director, Pam Woodman. HortEast was held in Halifax last fall and was a big success, as always. In addition to being a excellent source of education and information, HortEast is a great opportunity to meet and socialize with new and old industry associates. This fall HortEast will be held in Moncton.

By now everyone is getting into their respective seasons and hopefully business is going well. The weatherman has been his regular fickle self, but luckily Nova Scotians are a hardy breed and begin to think summer before Mother Nature finally relents and gives us warmer weather and sunny days. Before we get too deep into the season I’d like to take a moment to reflect on what has been happening here at LNS since last fall. We have a new executive including me (Peter Bugden) as President, Laura Cooper as Vice President, and Mike Fralik as Treasurer. Robin Godfrey is our CNLA Rep and Paul MacPhee moves into the sometimes comfortable role of Past President. Our Directors include Andrew Palmer, Russell Beakhouse, Carol Goodwin, David Thompson, and Grant

Our Annual Landscape Awards of Excellence were presented on March 26th at Ashburn Golf Course. Winners included Joe Bidermann Landscaping Design, Down to Earth Gardening and Landscaping, Elmsdale Landscaping, Heritage Landscape Services, Andrew MacDonald Landscaping, and Dalhousie University. The Awards of Excellence program is a way for Landscape Nova Scotia to applaud professionalism and excellence in the Landscape and Horticultural Industry. I am sure you join me in congratulating the winners and thanking our committee members and judges for their work on this event. We hope to see a growing number of entries for 2014. Hats off to Russell Beakhouse, Paul MacPhee and the entire committee for once again working hard to ensure that this year’s Garden and Patio Show was a success. Thanks to those who exhibited this year, most of you have indicated that the show was a success. Hopefully we can draw more exhibitors for the 2014 show.

representative on the provincial Apprenticeship Committee. After endless meetings and negotiations with the NS Government, they agreed to a special sitting of the Red Seal exam and waived all fees. We had a great turnout for our special sitting of the Red Seal Exam and outstanding pass rates of over 95%. Nova Scotia now has 23 Journey persons. This is a big accomplish of our industry and I would like to personally congratulate them all. Finally, now that the promised good weather is nearly here, don’t forget our two biggest social/sporting events of the season. The 4th Annual Softball Tournament is scheduled for July 13th and the Grant Mosher Memorial Golf Tournament is slated for August 8th. Both events offer a great chance to relax and have fun with your industry associates. Have a great summer everybody. We’ll talk again soon. Best Regards,

Peter Bugden LNS President

I’d like everyone to join me in thanking Carol MacCulloch who has worked tirelessly as our Landscape Nova Scotia

PINK DAYS IN BLOOM

Well it’s on! Background... Garden centres across Atlantic Canada are supporting the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation – Atlantic Region this summer with Pink Days in Bloom. With special events ranging from barbeques to tea parties, Pink Days in Bloom brings the beauty of flowers to the forefront of raising funds. This unique fundraiser was the brainchild of Linda Ryan, a breast cancer survivor from Newfoundland and Labrador. Linda enjoys gardening, and finds her time spent in the garden to be healing. So while on medical leave from work undergoing treatment for breast cancer, Linda focused her energy on building a gardening fundraising. Working with Pat Puddester and the staff of Pat’s Plants and Gardens, along with a group of dedicated volunteers, the first ever Pink Days in Bloom was held last year in Newfoundland and Labrador. Featuring fun, flora, and fundraising, Pink Days in Bloom is now popping up all over Atlantic Canada! For more information or to find out where you might find Pink Days in Bloom in your community, visit http://www.cbcf.org/atlantic/. If you want to host your own event please contact Brighid Langill, Development Officer (Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation – Atlantic Region) at blangill@cbcf.org or call 902.423.2017 / 1.866.273.2223 for information on how to participate.

Pink Days in Bloom is a new way for you to add a fundraising component to your everyday business and/or hobby. Whether you own or work at a garden centre, greenhouse, or are a garden enthusiast, you can fundraise and make a difference.

Getting involved is easy! Here are a few simple ideas to help you get started: • Host a garden party • Sell raffle tickets

• Put on a barbeque

• Donate a portion of your sales of a pink plant

News...

Celebrate National Tree Day!!! In 2011, the federal government sanctioned a day for Canadians to celebrate one of Canada’s greatest natural resources, the tree. Since its inception, CNLA members have participated in National Tree Day by donating trees and/or leading planting demonstrations in their local schools and communities. Last year, some of the members that led events were Down to Earth Gardening and Landscapes, Blomidon Nurseries, Highland Landscapes for Lifestyle, Lakeland Plant World, MacPhee’s Landscaping and Elmsdale Landscaping. The events were a big success, with the students at Port Williams Elementary and the Sherwood Park Education Centre eager to learn and have some fun getting their hands dirty. It’s important the industry registers with CNLA tor receive full promotional benefits. Last year there were more schools than industry participants! National Tree Day is a great opportunity to connect with your community and show your company’s care for the environment. Not only will it bring you attention locally, it will also bring the power and publicity of a national event to your area.

Not only is National Tree Day a way to promote your company, it is an excellent tool for getting youth excited about our industry. Past participants have noted that for some students, the planting demonstration was their first exposure to gardening and landscaping. If you are planning on getting involved this year, we want to know! Whether you are leading a planting or celebrating in another way, let us know by registering your event so that we can recognize you. The CNLA website has lots of resources to help you lead a successful demonstration, including teaching points for different age groups, sample press releases, a draft proposal letter to give to the school principal/teacher, and much more. Visit www.cnla-acpp.ca/nationaltreeday for more information and to register. Let’s celebrate National Tree Day and be Green for Life!

Resources...

Plant the RIGHT Tree in the RIGHT Place Program Before you start your next landscaping project, make sure you plan before you plant. Taller trees and power lines don’t mix well together. Choosing the right tree benefits your family, your property and the environment: You’ll help prevent safety hazards and power outages. You’ll also reduce the need for tree maintenance around power lines. Trees have a direct effect on the environment by removing carbon dioxide, generating oxygen and capturing dust and smog particles. Trees have a cooling effect by providing shade during the hot summer months and they reduce energy costs for air-conditioning and water use. Large trees promote wildlife habitats in our communities. To help you choose the right tree, visit nspower.ca/trees.

10

If you have followed any of these guidelines, don’t forget to enter your project in the Plant the RIGHT Tree in the RIGHT Place category for our 2014 Awards of Landscape Excellence.

What to do with all that plastic? Mark your calendars for this year’s National Plastic Recycling Event, taking place from June 21 – July 1, 2013. Participating garden centres will be accepting plastic pots and trays back to their stores to divert waste from the landfill. Last year, over 56 garden centres participated in the event, and collected over 91,000 lbs of plastic - almost double from the year before. We hope to increase that number this year. This is a great opportunity for garden centres to take advantage of some PR. The recycling event has been featured in many newspapers, and magazines over the years, as well as lots of promotion through social media. Let the public know that we are keeping our industry green! You can sign up as a drop off point by contacting Julia Ricottone at the CNLA office, julia@cnla-acpp.ca, 1-888446-3499 x 8615.
