Winner: Upper Levels Landscape Management Ltd. for Royal Park Towers in B.C. Park Royal Towers is a multi unit residential apartment complex, situated on approximately 14 acres in the Park Royal area of West Vancouver. The project began 28 years ago, when the owners of the complex requested a landscape garden that would look attractive to prospective renters and be enjoyed by existing tenants. The site was in poor condition when the work started in 1983 and over the years the soil has been rebuilt and almost the entire sight has been replanted with new (mostly salvaged) plant material. Now tenants enjoy the beauty of a carefully crafted and maintained landscape. Environmentally Friendly Practices used: Annual mulching and soil building. All green waste is composted. All grass clippings are recycled into the lawns. No pesticides are used. Irrigation is automated and closely monitored. Very few synthetic fertilizers are used. We have spent decades repairing this environment with the reintroduction of native plants, birds, insects, etc.

The client’s wanted to fully enjoy the beauty of the river; have functional and attractive outdoor spaces for dining and relaxing; and a respectable level of privacy. The project set out to discover the beauty of the river landscape through multiple spaces framed by tall ornamental grasses, each space offering a different view, thus a new experience. Special features include: • Masses of tall ornamental grasses to create movement with the wind. Sometimes slow and gentle, sometimes fast and spasmodic. It is a ‘ballet’ that reveals the mood of the day; • Large pots on pedestals become a focal point from the office window. They are installed in front of a semi-circle screen made of tall ornamental grasses that bring privacy to the house. They are lit at night;

• A large circle made of prefabricated concrete pavers is located halfway on the driveway and in the garden. It links them together and breaks the monotony of the large asphalt surface. Environmental considerations: The design includes massive plantings along the river bank to prevent soil erosion. It acts also as a buffer between the river and the backyard.

The path is made up of City of Calgary trail mix and a discrete heavy aluminum edger, which overall gives the pathway a natural appearance and captures the essence of the original design. Another unique feature of this park is the annual/perennial planting bed designs, which add interest and bring a lot of attention to the season plantings. A majority of the plantings were preserved from the original park and the topsoil mix was recreated to match the original composition. With a proud sense of history, a nice variety of seasonal plantings, large sodded areas, and an overall comfortable atmosphere, this park is now enjoyed all year round by the downtown core.

Skills and Training Capacity in the Canadian Horticulture Sector

The Horticulture Value Chain Roundtable, on behalf of the Canadian horticulture industry, is conducting a survey to validate the results of research which focused on skills requirements and training and education available to the horticulture sector in Canada. This survey will help confirm the direction for future efforts related to ensuring that Canadian academic institutions and other educational organizations recognize the capacity that will be needed to train and develop horticulture sector employees. Effective October 1, 2011, employers hiring Caribbean foreign workers under the Seasonal Agricultural Worker Program (SAWP) in British Columbia, Quebec, and Nova Scotia, and those employing greenhouse and nursery workers in Saskatchewan can no longer deduct $2.16 per working day from the worker’s wage to offset the cost of housing utilities. TREGUNNO, TIMOTHY WARREN - 55, of Halifax, Nova Scotia passed away peacefully at home Saturday, February 25 after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Halifax, Tim was an influential man who touched the lives of many. With over 30 years of leadership as owner and operator of the Halifax Seed Company, Tim led his team through many great successes and created a true family atmosphere as he viewed the staff as the “work” family. Son of Warren and Joan (Fraser) Tregunno, Tim was known nationally Tim Tregunno for his work as president of the Canadian Seed Trade Association. Other organizations that Tim was involved in include: president of the Nova Scotia Chapter of the Canadian Association of Family Enterprises, Maskwa Aquatic Club Steering Committee and Paddling Director, Canadian Power and Sail Squadron member and instructor, soccer coach, Landscape Nova Scotia, and the H.M.H advanced ski team. Regardless of the organization that he has been involved in it is the friendships he developed that meant the most. A family man, Tim adored his daughters Emily (Fraser Moir) and Alison (Mitch Gallant) and wife Nancy (Barclay). His true passions were family, seeds and sailing. Tim was loved by all who were fortunate enough to have met him. To sum it all up Tim was an awesome man and will always be at the helm in our hearts.

Boxwood Blight Update The CFIA’s detection survey for Cylindrocladium buxicola (boxwood blight) in BC, Ontario and Quebec is nearing completion. In addition to the two original nurseries in BC that were self-tested and self-declared to be positive, an additional four nurseries of 22 that were sampled were found with positives. In Ontario, a total of 15 nurseries and 36 fields were tested. Two nurseries were found to have positives. A total of 10 nurseries will be tested in Quebec, but

results are still pending. Once completed, the results of the survey will be posted to the CNLA website. As the CFIA survey is restricted only to those considered to be high risk, Landscape Ontario, in cooperation with OMAFRA are offering the nursery sector in Ontario a voluntary sample and PCR testing program. Further details are available from Landscape Ontario.

Although the regulatory status of C. buxicola in Canada and the US is under review by the CFIA and USDA respectively, feedback from industry stakeholders in both countries favours that it should maintain its current non-regulated status. Coming up roses! The rose breeding program at Vineland Research and Innovation Centre is progressing ahead of schedule, according to plant breeder Dr. Rumen Conev. Above right, Dr. Conev and research technician Francesco Pacelli inspect some of the first rose seedlings from the many hundreds of crosses made last summer. The best selections will be sent to Manitoba to be tested for winter hardiness and disease resistance.

Mise à jour sur la rouille du buis L’enquête de dépistage de l’ACIA pour Cylindrocladium buxicola («brûlure du buis») en Colombie-Britannique, en Ontario et au Québec prendra fin sous peu. Rappelons qu’à l’origine, la maladie a été identifiée dans deux pépinières de la Colombie-Britannique, qui ont effectué elles-mêmes leur test de dépistage. Les résultats se sont alors avérés positifs. Par la suite, 22 autres pépinières ont été échantillonnées: 4 échantillons ont été trouvés positifs.

Le programme de sélection des rosiers du Centre de recherche et innovation Vineland est en avance sur son horaire selon Dr. Rumen Conev spécialiste des obtentions végétales. En haut à droite, le Dr. Conev et Francesco Pacelli, assistant de recherche inspectent quelques jeunes plants parmi les centaines de croisements faits l’été dernier. Les plus prometteurs seront envoyés au Manitoba où leur rusticité et résistance aux maladies seront mises à l’épreuve.

Landscape Industry Specialist High Executive Program - Skills Major (SHSM) What’s the Deal LIEP with Red Seal? (Part 2)

LIEP has been cancelled due to a lack of registrants. As delivery of this program was the result of interest expressed by members, it would be worth obtaining feedback as to what deterrents there were to participating. This would be valuable in the planning of any future programs/courses based on member interest. One suggestion was that the program was too expensive but most other responses indicated that price was not an issue - it was more timing. Given that this was planned during the winter so that timing was less of an issue and was directed toward management/owners, any feedback from you, the members, would be very appreciated. 2010 Landscape Survey The 2010 Landscape Survey has now been completed and is available on the CNLA website at www.canadanursery.com, on the front page under the Landscape Canada section. Thanks to all who participated.

2011 Landscape Survey The new 2011 Landscape Canada Survey is now available at the following link: https://surveymonkey.com/s/K3KKJF5. We urge the 1,800+ landscape sector members to participate - it takes about an hour to complete on-line but the information is valuable to all in its summary. The greater the response, the more meaningful the information will be for everybody.

There are currently 29 Ontario high schools participating in this ornamental horticulture curriculum developed and delivered by Landscape Ontario. CNLA’s Landscape Canada Committee is working with the provincial Executive Directors to reach out to the provincial Ministries of Education and then to high schools in the rest of Canada with a plan to have at least one high school in each province delivering the curriculum by year end. This is an ambitious effort and will require industry support in all provinces to help deliver the curriculum to the students. Currently BCLNA, LNS and LNB have already made inroads with their schools and hopefully these can be increased. The beauty of the program is that it can be also taught to our certification programs which would allow students to obtain credits toward achieving certification when in school, providing them with a positive reason for enrolling.

Bench Marking Information The Landscape Canada Committee is keen to obtain your input on what you feel more important is to compare business management practical information. This will help in the development of funding proposals that will guide the industry into the future. The survey, which was sent out on January 27th, asks you to prioritize and comment on Human Resources, Financials, Marketing and Industry Information — additional comments are encouraged. These responses aid in formulating submissions to government for funding purposes and then help secure landscape industry intelligence. Keep an eye out for the tabulated results! This is the second part in a feature series of “FAQ’s” to raise the awareness and understanding of the Red Seal Landscape Horticulturist Apprenticeship Program.

What is NOA?

The Red Seal National Occupational Analysis (NOA) is a document that lists all the tasks performed in the occupation and describes the knowledge, skills and abilities required to demonstrate competence in the trade. This document is the basis for the Interprovincial Standards Red Seal examination. The Landscape Horticulturist NOA was developed in collaboration with industry stakeholders from across Canada, under the guidance of the CCDA and HRSDC and was published in 2010. What is the Interprovincial Red Seal Exam? Interprovincial Red Seal exam questions are based on a set of blocks (subject areas or topics), as identified in the National Occupational Analysis (NOA) for that trade. The Interprovincial Red Seal exams have 100-150 multiple-choice questions, time restrictions for exam completion and requires a minimum passing grade of 70%. The Interprovincial Red Seal program is administered by the Canadian Council of Directors of Apprenticeship (CCDA).

How is the NOA used to prepare for the exam?

The percentage of questions on each area of an NOA can be found in Appendix E of the NOA. The percentage of questions listed in the National Average column reflects the percentage of exam questions from the corresponding Occupational Skills block. A list of all sub‐tasks can be found in Appendix F of the NOA. This chart is a simple visual tool of all the Blocks, Tasks, and Sub‐tasks in the NOA. It can be used as a handy checklist to help compare what you know with what you will be tested on the exam.

What are the benefits of a Red Seal endorsement?

Red Seal endorsement is recognized by employers as a standard of excellence and indicates that the certificate holder has met the Interprovincial knowledge, skills and work experience/competency standards established by industry. This credential facilitates mobility based on a recognized industry standard of competency within a company, between like companies, across different sectors, and throughout Canada.

This endorsement allows the holder to work anywhere in Canada where the trade is designated without having to write further examinations.

A trade qualifier is an individual with extensive practical work experience who applies and is approved to challenge the certification examination in a designated trade.

A journeyperson is someone who has acquired the knowledge and skills in a trade and has been issued a Certificate of Qualification as attested to by a provincial or territorial authority.

Certificate of Qualification - A Certificate of Qualification is a document issued by the province to a person who has met the standards of the trade and the provisions of the Apprenticeship and Trades Qualifications Act and General Regulations, by writing and passing the certification examination for that trade. A Red Seal endorsement will be affixed to the certificate of qualification for the person who successfully challenges an Interprovincial Standards Red Seal examination. The Certificate of Qualification, along with an identification card, confirms the person has demonstrated his or her competence in a specific trade and has met all of the requirements for journeyperson certification. By obtaining a Certificate of Qualification, you will become a journeyperson and be recognized as a professional in your trade. These individuals must still challenge the Landscape Horticulturist Interprovincial Red Seal exam to secure certified journeyperson status with a Red Seal endorsement.
