High school programs assist in meeting future labour shortage needs Many high schools throughout Ontario are involved in a senior high school ministry initiative entitled Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM). This initiative was developed by the Ontario Ministry of Education over the past seven years to assist in raising the secondary student graduation success rate. This specialized program also integrates academic subjects by delivering curriculum that ties in specifically with a variety of subject areas. One resounding benefit to industry is that students are graduating from high school with advanced industry specific skills and are more prepared to enter the work force or continue to post secondary education.

Craig Kielburger High School in Milton, Ontario is one such program and is delivering a very effective Landscape/Horticulture program to a group of Grade 11 and grade 12 students. This off campus facility provides practical training to include industry certification in areas of First Aid/CPR, Chain Saw Awareness, Fork Lift and Skid Steer operation, Fall Arrest Training and industry specific certifications in Safety, Landscape Construction and Maintenance. Students are involved in specialized training in Landscape Design, Construction and Maintenance, Horticulture including Nursery and Greenhouse Production and Plant Care. Continued page 6...

At the end of November, CNLA staff wished Joseph Salemi farewell as he embarked on a new adventure as DynaSCAPE Software’s Product Marketing Manager. Is your company green for life? The horticultural trades associations across the country promote the phrase “green for life”, but what does it mean? Being green for life goes beyond the act of landscaping, growing or selling plants, it refers to a way of life that actively engages with our natural surroundings to improve the world we live in and promotes the joys and benefits of plants and landscapes. CNLA, along with the provincial associations, would like to recognize our members who represent this lifestyle. Below are some examples of CNLA members that truly symbolize being green for life. The Grounds Guys teams across North America participated in Monika Day by finding ways to give back to their local communities. The team in Abbotsford, BC did some fall cleanup and planting at Life Recovery, a non-profit women’s residential recovery program. The team in Barrie, ON helped Hospice Simcoe with some landscape work. Visit www.groundsguys.ca for more Monika Day stories. Horticulture students at the Nova Scotia Community College’s Kingstec Campus created an innovation garden dedicated to the late Tim Tregunno of Halifax Seed Company. He was seen as an icon in the industry and this garden commemorates his legacy. It will be available to students at the college, who will be able to research new and innovative techniques in the garden. Halifax Seed Company will assist with the materials needed to maintain the garden. This is not the first time the company has assisted the college, for example, they donated all the materials needed for its retail certification program. Tim Amos, faculty of Horticulture in the School of Trades and Technology, said of Tregunno, “He was always there when we needed him”.

Van Belle Nursery in Abbotsford, BC is targeting a new generation of reluctant gardeners with their line of foolproof plants in blue pots called ‘Bloomin’ Easy’. All of the plants in this line are virtually foolproof, guaranteed to produce the desired results, being improved varieties that bloom longer or rebloom, have great disease resistance and are easy to look after. The nursery has also set up a support website for the Bloomin’ Easy consumers to assist throughout the whole planting process. DeVonne Friesen, Van Belle’s sales and marketing manager said to the Vancouver Sun, “Our goal is to work with [the consumer] and offer trusted, productspecific information both at the time of purchase and planting and later for ongoing product success. We basically want to remove the fear of purchasing a shrub and the idea that they can’t do it.” Does your company reflect the green for life lifestyle? Let us know! Send an email to anne@cnla-acpp.ca or call 1-888446-3499 and share how your company is promoting the joys and benefits of plants and landscapes.

What’s an OJT guy? JOEL BEATSON, CLP, CAE I was recently referred to as ‘the OJT guy’ at an industry network event. This was from someone whom I had recently taught the OJT program and was now introducing me to her peers after having been regaled with how awesome OJT was. Well, let me tell you it wasn’t the second glass of wine that put the bounce in my step on the walk back to the hotel that evening, but much rather this great interaction with somebody that was as enthusiastic about this program as I am. This isn’t an uncommon experience, almost every former student I run into has great things to say about OJT. The problem at this point is there are just too few of these zealots out there. Too few of the OJT workshops happening. Too few people who even know what OJT stands for... OJT is On-the-Job Training. It is where most of the learning in our industry happens. It isn’t in classrooms or in company meetings or even at association events. It happens every day on your customers properties. OJT at it’s simplest is a train the trainer program. This industry is full of so much knowledge, skill and experience, but very few people have ever been taught how to teach. OJT does that. OJT will improve the efficiency of your training by 50-100%. OJT is a simple structured way to train. OJT is continuous improvement and engaging every employee in how to do things, better, faster and safer. We teach OJT in a workshop scenario over 12 hours (usually 1.5 days, but other splits work as well). They are run all year but focus on a late winter/early spring schedule, as that is when the majority of people can benefit the most. Every province is planning workshops, if you’re interested please contact them for details or to get on the list for date and location. Or call me with any questions, as you can tell I’m really into OJT. Joel Beatson: joel@cnla-acpp.ca or 1-888446-3499 ext 8610.

Apprenticeship: a solution to EI changes? The changes to Employment Insurance have to be the hottest topic in industry right now, and not in a good way. The uncertainty about how these changes will impact your businesses is the really difficult part. There are many strategies to help deal with these changes. Apprenticeship just might help in some situations. First, apprenticeship is now available across Canada thanks to our new Red Seal status. Second, while an employee is enrolled in apprenticeship and on EI they are not going

to be required to find other work as they are currently enrolled in a federally recognized training program. Third, this is only a bridge solution. After an apprentice has completed their program they will be a greater asset to the company and possibly advance to a non-seasonal type position that will no longer require them to apply for EI. Of course once they are a journeyman they can begin training and a new cycle begins. While this solution isn’t for everyone it is worth considering for those employees with a few seasons of experience that are considering making landscape horticulture a career. For more information on apprenticeship check out our four part feature ‘What’s the Deal with Red Seal’ archived online at www.cnla-acpp.ca/ redsealFAQ

INDUSTRY NEWS Cover story continued... This program provides a concentrated focus of learning over a two year period. In the final semester of grade 12, the SHSM students will receive specialized training in their areas of interest and have a unique opportunity to work full time in the industry, refining their skills and preparing for their post secondary destinations. Cooperative Education is one major component of this program The unique timetable allows grade 12 students to participate in full day co-op from April to June leading to summer or full time employment.

The key is to have qualified instructors with a passion to effectively educate our youth, and to have industry involvement to support the growth, delivery and practical learning of our students. These students are our future work force and business owners. Solidifying the development of such programs across Canada will empower the growth of our industry and meet the growing need for skilled labor. There are many teaching environments in which these SHSM programs are offered with a variety of emphasis focus areas, depending on the industry needs in that region. Although this program is hosted at an ideal facility which features extensive grounds and a greenhouse environment, it should be noted that delivery of a Specialist program in Landscape / Horticulture can take place in a wide variety of school and workplace settings.

The success of this program is highly dependent on industry involvement, not only to assist in training students through co-op but also in visiting the class during the winter as guest speakers and to assist in specific aspects of skill development. Many industry partners also assist in providing discounts on materials and equipment, as well as through donations.

AALD “Rock and Stroll” tour

The AALD Rock & Stroll Tour to Newfoundland was a professionally valuable and fun event enjoyed by all. Thank you to everyone who welcomed us with true Newfoundland hospitality!

(contributed by Tour Coordinator, Ellen Ruddick, CLD, Price Landscaping Services, Lutes Mt, Moncton, NB, and AALD Chair, Cora Swinnamer, Under The Arbor Landscape Design, St. Margaret’s Bay, NS) The Atlantic Association of Landscape Designers (AALD) embarked on a tour to St. John’s, Newfoundland at the end of September. The 12 AALD members were thrilled with the wonderful hospitality of their Newfoundland colleagues and industry associates. We were welcomed to their garden centres, landscape projects, botanical garden and homes. The warm sunshine and double-digit temperatures matched the hospitality on the Rock! The tour started with a visit to Signal Hill to view the beautiful St. John’s Harbour at sunset. The next morning we were on the road to tour Murray’s Garden Centre in Portugal Cove. Michael Murray discussed his integrated approach to the landscaping industry, including construction, propagation and retail sales. From there it was on to Spaniards Bay to visit Anthony O’Neill at O’Neill’s Gardenland. Their newly renovated retail space was extensive with a broad range of garden décor and garden themed products in addition to a huge selection of lush annuals, herbs and flowering baskets. Jeannette French, landscape designer and AALD member met us the next morning to lead us on a tour of properties that she designed in St. John’s. The Daffodil Place Healing Garden was of particular interest and will provide a restorative outdoor space for cancer patients during their stay at the residence. Before finishing the day of touring we visited Pamela Pippy’s private garden,

8

which contained an interesting mix of well-maintained evergreens, flowering shrubs and perennials. A stroll through her interconnected paths highlighted with sculpture was a pleasure. Pamela has worked as a landscape designer in Newfoundland and invited us to a neighbouring property to view a sample of her design work. After a day of walking on the hiking trails of St. John’s and Cape Spear we were treated to a reception at Liz Klose’s home followed by dinner out featuring traditional Newfoundland dining.

Background on AALD: The Atlantic Association of Landscape Designers was formed in 1996 with a founding group of 40 members. AALD unites individual designers while promoting excellence in design services among its members through industry support, networking and professional development. Members include: practicing landscape designers, landscape architects, horticulture students, and people or companies with an active interest in landscape design and horticulture. www.aald.ca

Certification 2012 retrospective It has been a great year for the Landscape Industry Certified Program in Canada!

As Director at the MUN Botanical Garden, Liz welcomed us at the Botanical Garden for a guided tour, joined by staff members to view the gardens, their Plant Atlantic research projects, wooded trails, Alpine collections and Crevice Garden. We finished our tour with a networking luncheon at the Garden with members of Landscape Newfoundland and Labrador. Hurricane Leslie had struck the area just a couple weeks before our arrival and the damage left in its wake was extensive. The trees and shrubs in many areas were desiccated by the salt winds and many greenhouses were destroyed. Uprooted

The Irrigation specialty, new to Canada, was piloted with great success in BC. As well, the new Retail Horticulturist exam was released with 11 candidates going through the test at Sheridan Nurseries in Mississauga. Certification exams were held from coast to coast, in all types of weather. This year saw 16 test dates, 159 new candidates, and 82 certifications awarded. Congratulations to all the newly certified professionals! We want to kindly thank all volunteers involved in this process throughout the year, their dedication and commitment to the Certification Program is what makes it a success. continued...

The Innovation Report

Novel grasses may be the answer to the next generation of home lawns New research at Vineland Research and Innovation Centre is looking at how to further develop a truly sustainable and resilient home lawn. With issues of lawn care inputs such as fertilizers and water usage top of mind with homeowners, new varieties of tall fescues and perennial rye grasses may offer the solution. These grasses have long been valued for their drought tolerance, low maintenance, and the speed at which they establish, which also helps prevent weed encroachment. There is also evidence to suggest greater insect tolerance in some rye grass and fescue cultivars. Their utility however has been limited as they tend to grow in clumps leaving bare patches in a lawn. For this reason, fescues and perennial rye grasses are traditionally mixed with other species such as Kentucky bluegrass to compensate. Several new fescue and rye grass varieties coming to the Canadian market appear to have the characteristics and growth habits to overcome these limitations. ‘Creeping’ tall fescue and rye grasses for example, have growth habits that are very similar to Kentucky blue making them much more acceptable for lawns. These varieties are characterized by their development of extensive, deep root systems which increases access to water and nutrients, delivering enhanced drought and heat tolerance, and reduced need for fertilizer and supplemental water requirements. New varieties of Kentucky bluegrass are also emerging which have lower water demands. These grasses are demonstrating qualities that will form the foundation of a robust and sustainable home lawn. Trials are underway in collaboration with the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food

and Rural Affairs at the Guelph Turfgrass Institute to validate performance of the creeping tall fescue and perennial ryegrasses. Conditions presented in the 2012 season provided a good test for year one evaluation of grass performance. Research results will be shared at the 2013 Ontario Turfgrass Symposium or for more information contact Michael Brownbridge

at Vineland Research and Innovation Centre directly michael.brownbridge@ vinelandresearch.com Funding for this research was received in part from RTF Water Saver, Quality Seeds, Dufferin LawnLife and the Ontario Turfgrass Research Foundation.

Growers Corner

BY RITA WEERDENBURG

WANTED: Your opinion! If there’s one thing nursery growers, retailers and landscapers have in common, it’s their love of plants and their excitement when great new varieties are introduced to the marketplace. Now, thanks to the new collaboration between CNLA and Vineland Research and Innovation Centre, industry can go one step further and have some real input into the future development and introduction of some of these new varieties. A critical first step to new plant development is understanding the needs of the consumer and who better to share that information than those people – you – that deal with and understand the demands of your clients. These surveys require your input and expertise and will take just a few moments of your time but the end result will be worthwhile!

Assessment of Native Plants This survey is a part of a National Cluster funded research project to identify the commercial potential of a group of native cultivars and species. These accessions have been studied over two years in replicated trials for their landscape performance – survivability, growth, blooming characteristics and season of bloom, plant architecture and overall ornamental display. The aim of the survey is to get industry’s insight regarding the potential of these cultivars and species for commercial development as landscape plants. Furthermore, the survey will provide some understanding on driving forces, trends and opportunities in native plants production and marketing. Participate at www.cnlaacpp.ca/nativeplantssurvey.

Edible Ornamentals A recent consumer study conducted in both Canada and the US points to a strong and growing trend by the consumer to include plants with both edible and ornamental characteristics in their home gardens. Across North America and Europe, all indicators verify that this is not a fad but a trend that is here to stay.

12

Building on the successful model of their hardy rose breeding partnership, Vineland and CNLA are once again teaming up to take advantage of this gardening trend and are gearing up to embark upon an edible ornamentals breeding program. Step one of this exciting new undertaking will be to acquire a comprehensive and diverse collection of genetics that can be used as parent plants for this new breeding program. While Vineland scientist Dr. Rumen Conev is already busy scouring sources around the world, we recognize that there could well be good genetics right in our own - and especially your backyards! What are we looking for? In brief, Dr. Conev’s quest is to find plants with edible and ornamental characteristics - either plants that are currently underutilized and in need of further improvement or selections that are superior or unique to the straight species. For a more detailed list, go to www.cnla-acpp.ca/edibleornamentals

COP benchmarking study: Phase 2 survey now on-line COHA’s first Cost of Production survey for the nursery sector has been completed and participants have received a copy of the full report prepared by Deloitte. The second phase of the survey has been modified to include financial data only (the first version also included management data) and should therefore take considerably less time to complete. All growers across Canada are urged to participate in this survey so that results will provide a more accurate representation of the current financial state of the production sector. All survey results are treated in strict confidence and tabulated by Deloitte’s. Only those firms participating will be eligible to receive a copy of the final report.

Landscapers Corner Landscape Horticulture Diploma Program Accreditation - Update A standardized curriculum benchmark was developed for landscape horticulture two-year diploma programs and recently was open to public comment from industry professionals. This draft benchmark was a minimum standard of excellence on mandatory learning outcomes upon which programs are accredited. The present public comment period is closed. The next step is to edit and review the comments prior to a final round of reviews. Colleges will be invited to have their respective landscape horticulture programs validated against the revised benchmark through an accreditation review process by the Canadian Technology Accreditation Board. (CTAB). Successful programs will receive accreditation. In the future, these programs will then be listed with the accredited programs in their province. For a complete listing of accredited programs please visit: http://www.cctt.ca > National and International Mobility > List of Programs National Accreditation Benefits: • Demonstrates to the community that an educational agency has achieved national academic requirements and benefits all stakeholders; • Evaluates an organization according to national benchmarks as defined by industry; • Allows management to develop a “road map” outlining current challenges and setting of future goals; • Provides a framework for continually improving the quality and efficiency of technology programs. This framework can then be clearly communicated to the agencies’ clients, encouraging continual progress and growth.

Canada-wide technology standards, a certified technologist can work and be professionally recognized in any Canadian province. The CCTT and its Constituent Members have developed a seamless system for member transfer that is compliant with the Federal/ Provincial Agreement on Internal Trade. • International Mobility: As a result of Canadian Council of Technicians and Technologists (CCTT) participation in international relationships and agreements, Canadian certified technologists and technicians are recognized around the world. The objective of accreditation through Canadian Technology Accreditation Board (CTAB) is to provide consistency among programs, raise the standards of education among colleges (internally for budgeting and externally for recruitment) and to have industry input into the development of the final benchmark standard.

Sustainable Sites InitiativeTM (SITESTM) - Update The (SITES™) 2009 rating system included 15 prerequisites and 51 additional, flexible credits to choose from that add up to 250 points. The credits address areas such as soil restoration, use of recycled materials and land maintenance approaches. One through four stars are obtained for achieving 40, 50, 60 or 80 percent of the 250 points. The recent open public comment period on the 2009 Rating System, as was published in the last edition of the Newsbrief, is now closed. Responses from the public comments will be used in revising the SITES™ 2013 Reference Guide, which will be released in mid-2013.
