DEER ISLE TEA HOUSE

Situated in Deer Isle, ME and approx. 0.15 mi away from the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, the Deer Isle Tea House is a project intended for the making and celebration of tea. The building is a series of linear bars that faces east to overlook the water. It is separated into 3 volumes that utilizes borrows the shape of the original Haystack building. The program includes dormitories for those interested in the tea making process and cultivation of tea plants, a green house for the growth of camellia sinensis, a plant that produces almost all teas, as well as local Maine plants. The tea making process begins with the drying and withering of the camellia sinensis at the lower level and can be enjoyed in the dining and tea room above. The designated tea space is at the third level of the building allowing it to be its own unique space with a clear view to the water.

BOYLE HEIGHTS

ART CENTER

Studio Critic: Ines Martin-Robles

Studio Partner: Yichun Xu

With a focus on the arts and Mariachi Plaza, our site analysis began by analyzing the lack of green and public spaces. The intent of this building is to act as an addition to Mariachi Plaza, reflecting the vibrant music and arts that define it. The building is accessible to the people of Boyle Heights at the ground floor and invites visitors to view art from the street level and within. The design is driven by surrounding artwork and playfulness created by the vivid colors of the neighborhood. Our analysis shows that by bridging this gap and creating an art center that focuses on green spaces, leisure, and art, we are able to draw more people to the site and facilitate circulation through the neighborhood. Our building features an open ground floor that connects directly to Mariachi Plaza. The neighborhood lacks public parks, driving our design to provide additional greenery at the ground, within the building, and on the facade. The main feature of the building is the vertical wood facade that creates a unique space that is between indoor and outdoor. Our building relates to the surrounding residences by maintaining scale through these stacked “boxes”. By creating smaller volumes and aggregating them, we are able to create varied spaces without compromising the scale of the neighborhood.
