Bellevue Baseball Program - Spring 2012

Coach Mark Yoshino enters his fourteenth year as Head Coach and nineteenth year of coaching overall at Bellevue. Yoshino was fortunate to take over a team that has only had one losing season in over 30 years. In a day and age where coaching turnover is high at all levels, the consistent success of the baseball program is partly due to the coaching stability at BC. Yoshino follows a short list of baseball coaches at Bellevue, which includes Jim Harryman, Ray Washburn, Bob Albo, Jim Johnson, and his predecessor, Mike Kanzaki. During his tenure at Bellevue, Yoshino has played an active role in the growth of the program to a national scale. The team has been ranked nationally twice (#8 in 2011, #18 in 2007).Since his inception into Bellevue College athletics in 1994, Yoshino has helped over 150 players move on to continue playing baseball and furthering their education at four-year colleges, set a school record for most wins in a season, and increased net fundraising revenue by 50%. He has also helped spearhead greater community involvement to numerous youth baseball leagues on the eastside from the Little League to American Legion level. His commitment to the eastside baseball community is evident by his attendance at youth baseball games in addition volunteering time to numerous coaching clinics Mark Yoshino as well. Yoshino has also helped cultivate several facility development Head Coach projects for Courter Field along with an increase in the number of studentathletes graduating with a two-year degree while playing baseball at the college. The team is currently graduating approximately 75% of their sophomores, which is a major success for athletic programs at the community college level. Yoshino has coached 31 players who were drafted by professional teams. He has had twenty pitchers drafted since his inception in ‘94 with ten signing professionally in the last seven years including two who are currently in the Major Leagues in 2010 MLB All-Star Evan Meek and Los Angeles Dodger reliever Blake Hawksworth. His first year not only was successful by his own terms, but also was one of the best seasons ever in school history. Yoshino earned North Region Coach of the Year honors for assembling a region championship club. In addition to the team setting a school record for wins, Yoshino felt that the program’s greatest accomplishments that year were individual, as ten of twelve second-year players earned a degree. In addition, nine of those were recruited by and placed into four-year college baseball programs. The ‘02 season will also go down in Bellevue history as one of the greatest teams for their 34-14 record and runner-up finish at the NWAACC Championships. Bellevue finished with the number one ranking in the NWAACC Coaches’ Poll in ‘02 as Yoshino was named Coach of the Year. 2007 was one of the greatest as far as the team goes, but was another success for Coach Yoshino’s primary goals: graduation and moving on to a four-year institution. 13 players from the team went to four-year colleges while 9 of them received their transfer degree. A final national ranking of 18th along with winning the school’s first NWAACC Championship in over 28 years was just icing on the cake. In 2009, the team captured their second NWAACC Championship in three years. The team had two junior college AllAmericans, two players in the Major League draft, and fifteen players continuing on to play at the four-year level (with nine receiving scholarships to division one universities). Yoshino was named Coach of the Year by the American Baseball Coaches Association for the Pacific Association Division (all community colleges in Washington, Oregon, and California). This past season, 2011, was memorable as well. In addition to capturing their third NWAACC title in the last five years, the squad was ranked #8 in the nation and had three players selected in the Major League Amateur draft. A 1987 Interlake HS grad, Yoshino accumulated several accomplishments as a pitcher in both high school and college. As a junior, Yoshino sported a 0.60 ERA for the 24-1 Saints, who captured the class AAA state championship in addition to a final ranking of 16th in the nation by U.S.A. Today. The following year, Yoshino earned All-KingCo honors as he captained the Saints to a Crest Division title. Yoshino then took the mound at Edmonds CC, compiling a two-year record of 12-1 for Coach 4

Bill Stubbs. In 1989, Edmonds finished second in the NWAACC with a 40-6 record, one of only three teams to win 40 games in the history of NWAACC baseball. Yoshino was named recipient of the Art Feiro Award (first and only Edmonds CC athlete to ever receive this honor), which is presented annually to the top scholar-athlete in the NWAACC. After a recurring elbow injury ended his playing days after earning a scholarship to the University of Portland, Yoshino returned home to begin coaching. He began with the U.S. Bank (now known as Washington Bankers Connie Mack) team in 1990. He was with the summer league powerhouse for seven years. During his U.S. Bank stint, Yoshino spent one season as pitching coach at Edmonds CC, where his staff sported the lowest team ERA (2.40) in the NWAACC. Other coaching stints the Chaffey 18-under Baseball Club in 1997, a team which he played on in his prep days. He has been a clinician-speaker at several events in the region including the Pemco All-Sports Clinic, Washington Baseball Camps, and Pacific Northwest (NW Star) Coaches’ Convention. Yoshino earned his master’s degree from Pacific Lutheran University in exercise science/athletic administration. He graduated with honors and a 3.9 g.p.a. In 1993, he obtained his bachelor’s degree in exercise & sport science from Western Washington University. He was selected by the faculty at Western as the Outstanding Graduating Senior and Physical Education Major of the Year for graduating with a 4.0 g.p.a. Yoshino also served an internship at the Philadelphia Phillies spring training site in Clearwater, FL. Yoshino earned the Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist title, which is recognized by university athletic and professional sport organizations as the credential to work with elite athletes at either level. Yoshino’s academic and professional credentials in the health & fitness field have given him the opportunity to also work at the college as a full-time instructor in physical education and health. He is a tenured faculty member at the college and is also the Assistant Athletic Director and Men’s Athletic Commissioner. In 1996, Yoshino was a nominee for the Margin of Excellence Award, which is annually presented to an employee on campus whose dedicated efforts towards helping students and serving the college are recognized. Although mostly known for his hard work on the baseball diamond, Yoshino is just as proud of his efforts ‘in the classroom’ - as a student and as an instructor. To Yoshino, these accolades are the true reflection of his efforts at serving as a positive role model for the players at Bellevue. His promotion of sportsmanship while still demonstrating success in a competitive college athletic environment has been recognized by his peers. His commitment towards enhancing the image of Pacific Northwest baseball is also evidenced by his active role on the NWAACC Baseball Committee. He serves as the NWAACC representative for the Pacific Association Division (all California, Oregon, and Washington 2-year colleges) of the American Baseball Coaches’ Association. Yoshino and his wife Lisa have two children Quinn (4) and Molly (2) and reside in Renton.
Jesse Wight begins his third year on staff with the Bulldogs after a stellar baseball career that began with an NWAACC title here at Bellevue in 2007 followed by two years as an everyday starter for the University of Nevada at Las Vegas (‘08-’09) Jesse Wight and a year of professional baseball. Wight will increase his role this year working with Assistant Coach hitters alongside Miller in addition to coaching the outfielders and baserunning. Wight stole 37 bases and was the North Region MVP during his sophomore year here at Bellevue. Wight will also assist Yoshino in the successful strength and conditioning program at Bellevue that has taken Bellevue’s hitters to another level. He was a two-year letter-winner at Kamiak HS and hit .530 as a senior with 39 hits, nine doubles, and 18 RBI. He was named All-WesCo 4A, and All-State outfielder. As a team captain for Kamiak, he set records for season average, singles, doubles, and hits in a season. Wight coaches alongside Miller for the Baden U-18 Baseball Club in the summer. Wight resides in Mukilteo. Bellevue Baseball Program - Spring 2012

Kevin Miller enters his third season as an assistant coach for Bellevue. He was
previously an assistant coach at the University of Washington. At Washington, Miller was a three-time first-team All-Pac-10 North shortstop and two-time Pac-10 North Player of the Year. Miller will continue to oversee hitting, infielders and will coach third base during games for Bellevue. This past season was a year to remember for the Bulldog hitters under Miller’s tutelage. The team clubbed 55 home runs (wood bat) during the season, shattering the NWAACC record. The team also sported one of the highest team batting averages in the NWAACC as well. Tyler Cox, one of his former players he developed, became one of the most feared hitters in the NWAACC and was named an All-American by the American Baseball Coaches Association. As a player, Miller was a key component of perhaps the greatest era in Washington baseball history as he helped the Diamond Dawgs to three straight Pac-10 North titles (1996-97-98) and two consecutive overall Pac-10 crowns (1997-98). He was named the Pac-10 North Player of the Year as a freshman and sophomore and was first-team all-league all three years. Additionally, he was a Kevin Miller first-team Freshman All-America selection in 1996 and earned second-team AllAssistant Coach America honors in 1997 and 1998. When his college career was over, Miller had set UW records for RBI in a season and in a career and was the Husky career record holder with 30 home runs. He also set a school record that still stands with a 22-game hitting streak in 1997. Drafted in the seventh round out of Ballard High School (he was, at the time, the highest-drafted freshman ever to come to UW), Miller was selected by Oakland in the third round of the 1998 draft. After going straight to high-A ball to play with the Modesto A’s, his pro career was cut short by a severe ankle injury. Prior to coming back to coach at Washington, Miller had spent the last four seasons as head coach at Ballard, his alma mater. In 2007, he was named the KingCo 4A coach of the year. Miller also spent two seasons as an assistant for the Beavers after a year as an assistant at Garfield High. Miller has also coached several 18-year old summer teams, including a year as Head Coach of the Shockers and the last six as Head Coach of Baden Baseball. During his high school playing career, Miller was a three-time first-team All-Metro League selection and was the 1995 Metro League Player of the Year. He batted .727 with 20 walks as a senior and helped the Beavers to the state playoffs as a junior and senior. He also earned varsity letters in basketball and swimming. Miller resides in Seattle and has two sons, Tyler (11) and Kameron (8).

Santiago graduated from Centenary with a degree in exercise science. Santiago began his coaching career right after playing, as he served as a volunteer assistant for Centenary in 2007. Ahern led the Totems to the playoffs in 2010 and repeated that feat this past spring. Ahern is currently coaching Washington Warriors U-18 this summer. A former catcher for Bellevue, Ahern played at Texas Tech University. He signed w/ the Red Raiders during the fall of his sophomore year at Bellevue. He was an all-north region catcher hitting .370 (team leader). As a freshman, Tim Ahern Ahern split duties behind the plate and hit .313 and was a second team allAssistant Coach region selection. He was a three-year letter-winner at Eastlake HS for Coach J.T. D’Amico, earning all-KingCo 4A League catcher as a senior. and playing at the four-year level, the Bellevue College Bulldogs have established themselves as one of the top junior college baseball programs in the nation. A final ranking of #18 in 2007 and a pre-season ranking this year at #12 in the country only solidifies it. With these accolades, comes the reality that there is a bulls-eye on every player’s back entering the 2012 season. “While followers love to jump on the bandwagon when you win, opponents want nothing more than to knock you down,” admits Head Coach Mark Yoshino, who is entering his fourteenth year as Head Coach for the Bulldogs, and nineteenth overall on staff. This year’s squad is more than ready to defend their title.
T
he fall season showed promise that the 2012 Bulldogs are ready to pick up where they left off last year. After finishing an informal fall season undefeated and outscoring opponents by a score of roughly 70-16, the team also saw a record high of eight players signing NCAA letters of intent 18
While the 2011 champion squad was littered with veteran presence in the batting lineup, this year’s is on the mound. the typical college guy. Kuzminsky, who was a key component out of the bullpen last year, will pitch in relief again in 2012 after a long summer of switching roles to starter. “Last year’s experience of being called upon so many times in relief gave Kuz an ideal of how important he was and how many innings he could log out of the pen,” says Yoshino. “He is ready to help the

Sampson was rated the number one prospect in the country by Perfect Game USA, the nation’s largest baseball scouting service. Five of Bellevue’s pitchers signed early NCAA letters of intent, which is an early indication of the quality presence the staff has. Cooper can be easily considered as the most polished pitcher on the staff, with his silky-smooth mechanics and a pitch ability that is beyond

of coaching from a physical standpoint in the off-season,” says Yoshino. “He’s playing catch-up now in the pre-season,” he adds. Region in basketball this year, continuing his multi-sport phenom ability that he showed in high school). “Although he didn’t get innings late last year, he showed the biggest strides of improvement down the stretch in practice, along with another returner, Jake Reppert,” notes Yoshino. “He had a great fall and is coming off the confidence of leading his basketball team this past winter…now we just have to get him feeling 100% healthy after enduring a long basketball season,” he adds. Reppert, a 6-5 lefty, will be sitting out this season in order to improve on his strength, size, and pitch ability. “He is young for his age, and a 6-5 lefty who is throwing harder and more strikes. At the rate he is improving, by next year, he may be the hottest prospect in the NWAACC,” says Yoshino. Although we could use him this year, he’s more likely to be a front-line guy in 2013; we are staying committed to our philosophy of developing players,” he adds.
B
ellevue’s newcomers to the staff include Bryan Burgher, Jeff Gonzales, and Steven Johnson. Burgher, who was drafted by the Minnesota Twins last June, is a big strong righty with a fast ball that touches 90 mph and is getting acclimated to just pitching after being exhausted as a two-way player for all of his life. The toll of playing two positions non-stop year-round caused Burgher to be shut down completely this fall and winter. He is now physically healthy but in reality is going through his learning period that others got during the fall. “Although it was good for his body to rest, it was tough to not be able to offer any type Bellevue Baseball Program - Spring 2012
rehabilitating an injured elbow all season. Groves sported a team-low .162 opponent batting average and recorded the save in last year’s NWAACC title game against Lower Columbia. Two pitchers still not healthy from previous injuries are Jake Collier, who was a starter on the 2010 squad, and lefty Blake Fulghum who earned all-North Region relief pitcher honors as a freshman. Nick Kiel, a heralded left-hander and Reppert are sitting out (redshirting) this season. And finally, Bellevue’s first recruit of the 2012 class, Zach Cloe, was injured last spring in high school and is recovering from Tommy John surgery this year. These six pitchers would’ve given Bellevue the depth that most coaches dream of having. However, the active staff who are ready to go now are prepared to put the team on their back and carry them to another title.

“When you’re in the strike zone a lot and the ball can go downward in any direction on any given count, you’re going to succeed at any level.”
Gonzales, a transfer who pitched in the Pac12 last year at Washington, has undergone a complete metamorphosis going from a power pitcher wannabe to a strike machine with savvy on the mound. Johnson is another whose improved mechanics have led to a higher strike percentage and is the pitcher on the staff who is the most deceptive with his excessive movement on all pitches. “When you’re in the strike zone a lot and the ball can go downward in any direction on any given count, you’re going to succeed at any level,” says Yoshino.

hile there is tremendous talent on this year’s staff, the potential of what it could’ve been rivals a pitching staff of a division I squad. Injuries and redshirt status have reduced the squad’s depth dramatically. The biggest blow was the recent loss of Andrew Groves, who will be
This year’s catching corps is the opposite of last year’s. Exactly a year ago, injuries plagued the catching staff to the point where tryouts among other players on the team needed to be held in order to find healthy catchers. This year, Bellevue has four catchers who are ready to go this spring; and each one carries different traits, which will give Yoshino the opportunity to slot catchers based on what the priorities are for a given game. Third-year player Alex Ross has finally broken over the hump of physical constraints. After being injured all year last year with back problems and missing most of his freshman campaign with a broken thumb, Ross has also made huge gains physically, adding 15 pounds to his frame after remaining stagnant for two straight years. He was the team’s top hitter in the fall who has perhaps the best bat control on the team. Will Minice is another three-year member who sat out last season as he continues his journey of being transformed from corner infielder to catcher. With a team-high bench press of 345 pounds, his man strength is clearly evident when he dons a uniform. “Brutus” as he is called, is expected to be a solid force behind the dish and with his left-handed bat. Nick Lombardi is the unknown recruit out of Eisenhower HS in Yakima, continuing the successful tradition of recruits Bellevue has plucked out of the area known as the 19
“Palm Springs of Washington.” He displays excellent hands with his receiving and one of the strongest arms of the catchers. Although he was a successful hitter in high school, Lombardi’s swing is still emerging and is a work in progress. By the time it is all said and done, Lombardi may be a bigtime prospect. Brady Kerr is Bellevue’s third left-handed hitting catcher, adding to the oddities of this year’s catching prospectus. While it is rare to find any left-handed hitting catcher, Bellevue sports three of them who can all hit. Kerr’s arm has also displayed accurate throwdowns in 1.9 seconds, which will help shut down any opponent’s running game.
athleticism shows with his ability to play a backup shortstop for us,” he adds. Casper, who started on the mound for the Bulldogs last spring with his 88 mph fast ball, will also pitch in relief duty this year. He is considered one of the top power prospects in the region this year for the Major League draft. His other plan is just as good; he has signed a letter of intent to play for the twotime NCAA national champion Oregon State Beavers next year. Nate Litka is the

Jerad Casper enters 2012 as possibly the purest third basemen in college baseball, at any level, on the west coast. He returns this spring after popping out eleven home runs last spring and has a gold glove at the hot corner and a sizzling arm that rivals any major leaguer. “There aren’t a lot of guys who can field, throw, and hit for power like him,” says Yoshino. “And his 20

team’s dirtbag prototype. He goes all out and can play any infield position and simply gets the job done. Expect Litka to play all three positions in the infield and contribute significantly this spring. Willy Reel is a transfer from the University of Washington, where he started on a part-time basis. His fielding ability and arm strength so far this year have proven he can play the position at the four-year level. He can also show flashes of power, as evidenced by his home runs this fall with a wood bat and his off-thechart numbers as a senior in high school. John Wall, the team’s only true leadoff-type hitter, is a left-handed hitting speedster who can hit to all fields, bunt, steal bases, and defend at second base. Wall is coming off an excellent fall and was also named Most Improved last spring by his teammates. Dustin Breshears is entering this spring as a second baseman at the 2-year level but may leave as a bona-fide shortstop recruit after he is done here. Now pushing up a massive 300 pounds on the bench press and with explosive acceleration out of the box and on the basepaths, Breshears is reaping the benefits of junior college baseball with his

“Tip your cap to Tyler for his hard work and to Coaches’ Miller, Wight and Santiago for yet further proof of the type of player development that occurs in the Bellevue program.” physical development in only six months in the program. He can also play shortstop if needed in addition to second base this spring. Colin Hering is another physical specimen who has developed into a pro prospect. An unknown out of high school as a two-way outfielder/left-handed pitcher, Hering possesses pure power from the left side. He is gradually garnering attention from pro scouts and college coaches and may be a frontline recruit when it is all said and done. Anthony Flatt is the right-handed hitting first baseman this spring and has developed even more bat speed and power under the tutelage of hitting coach Kevin Miller who helped develop Bellevue’s eyepopping power display last year. Miller clones Flatt’s swing as a version similar to the departed Kyle Johnson, who launched out ten home runs in 2011.
Outfield
Besides behind the plate, outfield is the other spot where graduation losses are most evident. Bellevue will replace four sophomores from last year’s club with new bodies. Marc Dickerson is the lone returning outfielder. Although he led the Bellevue Baseball Program - Spring 2012
team in average last year hitting .392, Dickerson went down with a seasonending injury to his wrist and was unable to play at the NWAACC Championships. He returns in center field and will patrol the outfield with freshman Max Brown, who is the team’s fastest runner on the clock, in the 6.6-6.7 range in the 60-yard dash. Brown also displays surprising power considering his lanky 6-4 frame. His power will enable him to be anywhere in the lineup from leadoff to middle of the order. Tyler Baumgartner is another pro prospect with an excellent school option; he has signed a letter of intent to play for the University of Oregon, currently ranked 13th in the nation. Although an infielder last year, he has transitioned to outfield where his arm is better utilized. Baumgartner has developed from a one-tool guy to a three-tool wonder with an ability to hit for average, power (as evidenced by his home run displays last year and this fall), and improved running speed. He has shaved his 60 time to below

seven seconds and has made huge strides with his power. Yoshino jokes “there was a time last fall in the indoor cages as a freshman when an anonymous pro scout said his bat speed was just ‘ok’ and walked off after watching one swing. Now he’s one of the most heavily-watched hitters in the entire northwest by pro scouts. 2011 Bulldogs development that occurs in the Bellevue program.” Dae Lee went from unknown exchange student at John F. Kennedy HS to one of the most highly-heralded hitters in high school during his junior year. He was quickly discovered as a big-time hitter as pro scouts were following his league-rival, Ryan Brett, who signed with the Tampa Bay Rays in the third round of the 2010 Major League draft. Lee possesses bat control with a unique style and has the ability, although rarely seen, to turn on a ball and hit for power. “Once he gets comfortable in the environment, he will be one of the toughest outs in the league. We are fortunate to have him,” says Yoshino. Lee, who was originally recruited to play baseball at Washington State University, opted for the junior college route to develop academically. Jordan Richartz is a plethora of baseball talent; he can hit, throw, field, run, and plays with guts every chance he gets. His arm strength will be utilized in right field. Like many of the pitchers, Richartz is nursing an injury which occurred during a diving catch attempt during the pre-season. He is expected to return for league play in April.
schools. “There is a good mix of returning prospects and incoming transfers from NCAA division I schools that have put many teams on the radar for this season,” says Yoshino. “The NWAACC is also seeing some transition with new coaches coming in and veteran coaches going out in the last couple of years; which leads me to believe that there may be some new representation at the top in any of the four regions this spring. The possible fresh look amongst the NWAACC is good for us; it will keep us on our toes and push us to keep our program where we are at and beyond,” he adds. With three NWAACC titles in the last five years, and a third place finish in 2010, Bellevue has become quite familiar with the town of Longview, site of the annual NWAACC Championships. This year’s squad has high hopes of returning to their vacation spot to create yet another lifelong memory during their stay through Memorial Day.

ABOUT THE NWAACC The Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges is the parent organization for thirty-five(35) community colleges in the states of Washington and Oregon*. The NWAACC has a variety of administrative responsibilities including conference tournament management, eligibility, publications, rule enforcement and sports information. The growth of the community colleges over the past decade has been impressive. The colleges in the Northwest are comprehensive in nature and provide a variety of academic and vocational offerings as well as many enrichment activities for their students. As our student athletes have transitioned into a work environment, many have provided testimony about the significant benefit and value that participation in community college athletics provided for them. Enrollment in community colleges continues to grow as does interest, participation and membership within the NWAACC. * One college outside Washington and Oregon holds partial membership in the NWAACC.
NWAACC HISTORY AND GROWTH 1946: WSJCAC is Born Although athletic competition between junior colleges existed in the 1930’s, the first structured league and championship events in men’s sports first came about when the Washington State Junior College Athletic Conference was formed in 1946. The nine charter members of the WSJCAC were Centralia, Clark, Everett, Grays Harbor, Lower Columbia, Olympic, Skagit Valley (known then as Mt. Vernon JC), Wenatchee Valley and Yakima Valley. Columbia Basin became the tenth member in 1955. The conference offered football, basketball, baseball, tennis, track and golf. In 1963, wrestling entered the picture followed by cross country in 1965 and soccer in 1974. The first two years of the WSJCAC went without any bylaws until the spring of 1948 when Executive Secretary Jim Ennis of Everett JC along with Dave DuVall of Skagit Valley and Maury Phipps of Grays Harbor wrote the original constitution governing scholarship limits, grade eligibility requirements and overall philosophy of the conference’s athletic programs. 1963: The OCCAA is Established in Oregon It was about this time when community college athletics came to life in the State of Oregon. In the winter of 1963, five schools met to exchange ideas on the possible formation of a league. The Oregon Community College Athletic Association then began play in 1963-64 with Blue Mountain, Southwestern Oregon, Central Oregon, Clatsop and Treasure Valley as charter members. The conference more than doubled in size when Clackamas, Lane, Mt. Hood, Umpqua and three others joined in 1968-69. 1964: Washington’s WSJCAC Renamed WAACC In 1961, the Washington State Legislature cleared away a legal roadblock which had forbidden the establishment of junior colleges in those counties that had four-year colleges. That started a spurt of expansion as the conference doubled in size. In 1964, the conference was renamed the Washington Athletic Association of Community Colleges. 1970: The NWAACC is Established The WAACC was renamed the NWAACC when Mt. Hood left the OCCAA to join their Washington neighbors in 1970. It was during the seventies that women’s sports started to grow. Previously they were governed by the Northwest College Women’s Sports Association. Women’s sports were combined with the men’s sports when the umbrella organization of the NWAACC was formed for the 1978-79 season. The job of handling both the men’s and women’s athletics was too much for volunteer athletic directors who performed the task in the past. After the 1978-79 season, a five-member committee from the conference hired Frank Bosone as their first Executive Director. Bosone retired in 1992 and was succeeded by Dick McClain. 1983: Merger - OCCAA Joins NWAACC Northwest community college athletics was forever changed when seven schools from the OCCAA joined the NWAACC for the 1983-84 season. The merger between the Washington and Oregon colleges has helped the NWAACC become a strong organization. Since 1984, nine other colleges have added intercollegiate athletics and/or became NWAACC members. Today, the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges has 35 member schools. 24
