HUMN 100. Research in the Arts and Humanities I (1-1-0)
Prerequisite: Freshman standing or permission of instructor. This course will introduce key approaches, concepts, and competencies of research in the arts and humanities. Coursework will vary by discipline but will focus on learning how to develop and apply research tools, analyze primary and secondary works, and understand diverse scholarly approaches to research in a given field. As this is the introductory course, there will be significant emphasis on qualities of high-level research. A short culminating project such as a presentation or performance, database, website, or short summary paper will form the capstone of the course. This course is repeatable once for credit.
HUMN 400. Research in the Arts and Humanities IV (1-1-0)
Prerequisites: HUMN 300 and senior standing or permission of instructor. In this course, students will continue their research from the previous semester and evolve their work into a large scholarly project. This will culminate in the dissemination of their work to the public through avenues such as conferences, websites, journal distributions or other mediums agreed on by the professor and student. This course is repeatable once for credit.
HUMN 200. Research in the Arts and Humanities II (1-1-0)
Prerequisite: Sophomore standing or permission of instructor. In this course, students will conduct basic research and learn the methodologies employed by researchers in the humanities. Coursework will vary by discipline but will focus primarily on skills such as analyzing primary works; completing short creative works; locating appropriate secondary sources; and summarizing and evaluating sources. A short culminating project such as a presentation or performance, database, website, or short summary paper will form the capstone of the course. This course is repeatable once for credit.
HUMN 300. Research in the Arts and Humanities III (1-1-0)
Prerequisites: HUMN 100 or 200 and junior standing or permission of instructor. In this course, students will conduct independent research under the supervision of a professor in the arts and humanities. Coursework will vary by discipline but will build upon skills developed in the 100- or 200-level humanities labs. A culminating scholarly or creative work (similar to a term paper, Paideia, short performance or artistic work) will form the capstone of the course. This course is repeatable once for credit.
