Our

LOCATION

Virginia is located midway between New York and Florida and borders Washington, D.C., the nation’s capital. Virginia is home to a variety of landscapes, from the mountains in the western part of the state to the sandy coastal plains along the Atlantic Ocean. The different regions across Virginia offer a wide range of outdoor activities, such as skiing and snowboarding in the mountains. Golfing, hiking, bicycling and camping are year-round pursits in Virginia, and the coastal regions provide plenty of opportunities for such year-round water sports as surfing and kayaking.

Newport News,

VIRGINIA

Christopher Newport University is located in Newport News, Virginia, adjacent to the 550-acre Mariners’ Museum and Park, the Noland Trail, and the James River. Newport News is geographically the fourth-largest city in the state with a population of 180,719 (2010 Census Bureau), and was settled in 1621, not long after the Jamestown Colony. It is named after our own Captain Christopher Newport — an English sailor and privateer who captained the largest of the three ships carrying settlers to Jamestown and the Virginia Colony.

Virginia Beach, VA

Christopher Newport University is located in the heart of one of the most historic — and beautiful — areas in the United States. Just a short drive away are significant historic sites, such as Colonial Williamsburg, and great beaches on the Virginia coast. •

Colonial Williamsburg, just 20 minutes away, is the nation’s largest outdoor living-history museum. Pre-Revolutionary times come alive through reconstructed homes, stores and taverns populated by interpreters and actors. Williamsburg is also home to Busch Gardens amusement park and Water Country USA water park.

Virginia Beach offers world-class beaches, great water sports and a rich nightlife — only 45 minutes from campus.

Washington, D.C., just over two hours away, is the nation’s capital. You’ll find numerous free, public museums and treasured buildings, monuments and memorials — the National Mall, the Capitol, Washington Monument, the White House and Lincoln Memorial, among others.

Undergraduate

RESEARCH

From the moment you arrive at Christopher Newport, you’ll have the opportunity to conduct compelling undergraduate research. It’s one of the best things you can do as a student and will help open doors after you graduate. As undergraduates, students from every major enrich our campus with their creativity and action, working directly with expert teacher-scholars to create new knowledge and seek answers to great questions. Student work has led to peer-reviewed publications in notable journals, presentations at conferences both here and abroad, and performances across the country. Whatever field excites you, you’ll find a unique opportunity to explore it.

You’ll discover some of the world’s best science and engineering facilities right in our backyard, such as the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (Jefferson Lab) and NASA. We’re also in the heart of one of the most historic regions in America, and our nation’s capital is just a few hours away.

Summer

SCHOLARS

Summer scholars are full-time, paid undergraduate research fellows. This program teams intellectually curious, motivated students with a professor on a compelling research question. The result is a community of scholars that promotes the collaborative nature of research, champions communication across disciplines and fosters discovery. Through this eight-week, in-residence experience, participants gain research and communication skills, learn more about the University’s scholarly resources, and become better problem solvers. cnu.edu/research/summerscholars

The Christopher Newport

EXPERIENCE At Christopher Newport you’ll learn the answers to two important questions — “What am I good at?” and “What do I love to do?” Whatever your passions lead you to study — from electrical engineering to philosophy of law, from music performance to accounting — the liberal arts and sciences are the foundation of your academic endeavors. Here we don’t teach you to do something; we prepare you to do anything. cnu.edu

Captains

ATHLETICS

Christopher Newport University has one of America’s most successful NCAA Division III programs, producing 80 individual and team championships and more than 600 All-Americans. Nearly every year we have the top winning percentage among all Virginia schools. In addition to our varsity teams, CNU has club and intramural sports teams. Unlike NCAA collegiate athletics, club sports are student initiated, operated and managed while members work to fund their activities. They can be either competitive or recreational. Competitive clubs play against other collegiate teams while typically requiring greater time, travel and financial commitment, and may involve tryouts and leagues. Recreational clubs focus more on enjoyment, yet sometimes involve matchups against area schools. Students of all athletic abilities seeking healthy on-campus competition can take part in intramural sports, a great way to be part of a team without the long-term commitment. President’s Leadership

Honors

PROGRAM (PLP)

PROGRAM

This unique program offers students more freedom to customize their academic experience for their personal and professional aspirations by reducing the liberal learning core requirements. This allows more time for interdisciplinary seminar-style courses and challenges students by means of study abroad, independent research, internships, jobs and volunteer experiences relevant to their passions. Each student receives an annual residential scholarship up to $10,000 (including a study abroad stipend), as well as priority housing in an Honors learning community and priority course registration. SAT or ACT test scores are required to receive program consideration.

As part of PLP, each student earns a minor in leadership studies. Through challenging courses, public service, personal development, foreign study and other targeted opportunities, PLP empowers leadership students to make a difference — to become caring, knowledgeable and effective leaders for America and the world. Each student receives an annual residential scholarship up to $10,000 (including a study abroad stipend), as well as priority housing in a PLP learning community and priority course registration.
