DIRECTOR’S NOTES

Keep Calm & Carrie On

Welcome to the Carrie-Verse LG Godwin

Carrie White may not have survived her Prom Night, but last year the novel that wields her name celebrated its 50th Birthday. In that half century, this First/Final Girl’s story seeped through American Cultural Consciousness, flowing from the narrative that launched Stephen King’s career, through three films, and one—notorious—theatrical production often considered “Worst Musical of All Time.” Even individuals unfamiliar with the novel King’s partner Tabitha saved from the family rubbish bin will surely have the horrific image of Sissy Spacek, drenched in blood with eyes bulging in Brian de Palma’s 1976 film, burned into their brains on a level that rivals any Juliet on her Balcony, Macbeth with his Daggers, or Hamlet with that iconic Skull.

And yet, as many conversations since TheatreCNU’s production was announced have shown, mention of Carrie: The Musical is generally met with an incredulous “Carrie the What!?!”; shock and awe further spiral when one relates the unlikely history of a text still-known as a “reference point for Broadway atrocities.” As a story, Carrie has always negotiated the elite and popular: it emerged when horror was considered shameful schlock, but is now widely-seen as the pivot point that transfigured terror from marginal to mainstream. King has become American Canon, attested by the anticipation that greets his work, the bestseller runs that testify his popularity, and the near-inevitable cinematic and/or televisual adaptations of his books.

In Musical format, Carrie likewise materialized from an uncanny alliance between the American authors/composers who brought Fame and Footloose to the World when they united with the Royal Shakespeare Company in search of a moneyspinning Broadway hit to shore up its Subsidy. Charged by funders to “make it like Grease,” British Director Terry Hands—anecdotally at least—heard the homophone “Greece” then saddled the 17-year-old Linzi Hately to “Carrie”/carry the eponymous burden of a show that stunned Shakespeare’s Stratford-upon-Avon in its premiere before a troubled New York transfer that, nevertheless, created a cult following in its 16 Preview/5 Performance run.

The men who had written this piece about women panicked throughout, constantly revising story, scenery, and song so that the production’s tagline—”there’s never

been a musical like her”—manifested literally, creating a Carrie Kaleidoscope that, even in the version you will hear today never quite locked in place. More than half of the songs in the 1988 Premiere were cut or massively revised for the 2012 Off-Broadway version that serves as the basis for our production; major American and British revivals in 2015 were further revised by writers seemingly— still—uncertain how to harness Carrie’s powers.

As a Company, we have done due diligence, documenting and incorporating Variants from novel, to film, to musical, to film, to film, to stage revivals...and even the 2018 episode of Riverdale that brought this musical to a new generation. The original novel remains a Baby Boomer story through and through, riddled with references about dropping dimes in pay phones and steeped in archaic mid-century cliches about American High School rituals ranging from “A” for Athlete to at least “P” & “Q” for Prom Queen. To their credit, the Zoomers envisioning and enacting this tale in times of grotesquely violent division have refused to accept or endorse a damaging mid-century status quo that stubbornly hangs on to lazy assumptions as a valid means of perception or cruelty to make a point. They have, instead, sought and found humanity even in King’s Margaret and Billy, recognized the damage done by and to Gore’s Gardner and Chris, seen and tried to healthily repair the cracks in Cohen/Pitchford’s Sue and Tommy, and found Carrie to be an agent as well as a victim.

Our corner of the Carrie-Verse, we think, uniquely shows that fresh eyes and keen brains, refusing assumptions and embracing empathy, can envision a different world, enact it in a rehearsal room, and present it—humbly but hopefully—on a public stage. King’s Carrie was bullied into committing violences in the era of “Duck & Cover” that were unthinkable until the age of “Active Shooter” Training; our Carrie, cleaving all 50 years of the disturbing pleasure one can peel from the pain in art, takes the C-Verb quite seriously in all its senses. We seek to sever past generational and gendered pain to create a more positive present; but also to unite glorious sound and spectacle in ways that showcase the best of what humans— regardless of gender or generation—can accomplish.
