Jamaican medical student is valedictorian at university in China

In a proud display of his Caribbean roots, Jamaican student Dr. Doniel Bowen stood as the valedictorian for the graduating class of 2023 at the Anhui Medical University in China. This achievement, celebrated at the recent graduation ceremony, added a distinctive Caribbean note to the event

Starting his address with the Jamaican slang, “big up unu self,” Dr Bowen seamlessly transitioned between English and Chinese throughout his speech He also expressed his gratitude to the key individuals who significantly contributed to his educational journey

“Thanks to the persons who have helped me along the way, I will forever be indebted to you,” Dr. Bowen said, as he expressed his sincere appreciation to those who supported him, helping him pave the path towards Black excellence

Originally from Montego Bay, St James, Jamaica, Dr Bowen spent his formative years in Chambers Pen, Hanover

After graduating from Cornwall College, he decided to further his studies in China as a cost- effective alternative to Caribbean medical education

Anhui Medical University, a provincial key university jointly established by the Anhui Provincial Government, the National Health and Family Planning Commission, and the Ministry of Education, played host to Dr Bowen’s academic performance

In September, he will be specializing in Orthopedic surgery at The First Affiliated Hospital of Anhui Medical University

Previously known as the Shanghai Southeastern Medical College, Anhui Medical University was established in 1926 in the capital Hefei, Anhui, China The globally-renowned institution offers a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate medical courses in various disciplines including medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing, public health, and preventive medicine
