Leaders agree on plan to ban assault-style weapons

Caribbean Community leaders have agreed on plans to introduce bans in their countries on assault-style weapons mostly manufactured in the US to curb spikes in gun violence and weapons smuggling in the 15-nation Caricom bloc

The decision came late Tuesday at the end of a two-day summit in Trinidad on crime The bans would require a mix of legislation and changes in licensing regulations

The Caribbean leaders had called a roundtable on the issue amid complaints from several governments about an increase in gangland violence, bolstered by the availability of high-powered, military-style weapons smuggled mostly from the US Jamaica, Trinidad, The Bahamas, St Lucia and Barbados have all complained about an increase in gun murders in recent years

“Caricom heads have agreed today to take a decision to ban the use and

presence of assault weapons in the civilian population of our nations,” host Prime Minister Keith Rowley told reporters at the end of the summit, attended by a majority of heads of government

The move came just a few weeks after several member nations announced plans to join with Mexico to sue American gun manufacturers over the weapons smuggled into their countries

Bahamian Prime Minister and Caricom Chairman Phillip Davis told the summit that in his country 98 6 percent of recovered illegal firearms could be traced to the United States, in Haiti 87 7 percent and in Jamaica 67 percent

“Jamaica had a staggering homicide rate of 52 9 per 100,000 inhabitants,” he said, as compared with the global average of about 7 5 per 100,000

However, Davis did not have figures on what percentage of the seized guns were assault-style weapons as

Jamaica’s Ministry of Health and Wellness has reported that there is an increase in respiratory illnesses in the country

He noted that the Caribbean leaders have asked US President Joe Biden for dialogue on the weapons issue

Jasmine Hartin pleads guilty to shooting death of Belizean police ofcer

Canadian socialite Jasmine Hartin has pleaded guilty to manslaughter by negligence in the 2021 shooting of senior Belizean police officer Henry Jemmott

Hartin, 34, the ex-wife of British billionaire Lord Michael Ashcroft’s son Andrew appeared at the Supreme Court in Belize City on Tuesday

Emotional Hartin said outside of the court: “I just want Henry’s family to have peace now and I want this whole thing to be behind all of us so we can heal ”

She will be sentenced on May 31, 2023

Reports are that Hartin shot 42-year-old Superintendent Henry Jemmott while the two had a drink near Ashcroft’s hotel on the island of Ambergris Caye in May 2021

The body of Jemmott was found with a gunshot wound behind his ear

According to reports Hartin shared that the cop allowed her to handle his Glock 17 handgun to practice loading and unloading it when it “just went off ”

“I don’t remember ever touching that trigger on the gun so I don’t know what happened, to be honest,” Hartin said in a June 2022 interview

“I was trying to get the clip out and it just went off — I don’t remember ever touching the trigger So I’m not sure if it was a faulty weapon or not I really can’t tell you how it went off,” she continued

According to the ministry, the COVID-19 virus (SARSCoV-2), influenza B, influenza A, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) are the most common respiratory viruses in Jamaica and have contributed to the current rise in respiratory infections

It further said that Influenza (flu) and RSV usually cause seasonal increases in respiratory illnesses in Jamaica and other countries yearly

The health ministry reported an increase in weekly visits to public health facilities for influenza-like illnesses It also revealed that admissions for severe acute respiratory illnesses have increased in the past two weeks

As it relates to COVID-19, the ministry said that the seven-day average positivity rate as at April 15 was 6 8%, and shared that the highly transmissible Omicron is the COVID-19 variant that is presently circulating in Jamaica

The health ministry added that currently prevalent respiratory viruses can result in

When is old too old?

This week, President Joe Biden, 80, announced he is seeking a second term in office If he is nominated, Biden will be 82 on Election Day, and if reelected, 83 when sworn in on January 20, 2025 Despite thinking Biden has been doing a respectable job in his current term, many Americans, including Democrats, are weary of him seeking reelection, being of the opinion he is too old

An NBC poll published last Sunday indicated 70 percent of those polled don’t want Biden to seek reelection, and 48 percent of those who do not want him to seek reelection, indicate his advanced age as the major reason

In South Florida, a considerable number of Democrats who voted for Biden in 2020 have also indicated they are not supportive of him seeking reelection because “he’s just too old to run again ”

But how old is old? In the private and public sectors, the formal retirement age is set at age 65 Some employers allow retirees to keep working, either because their services are very important to the operations of the company, or the retiree is reluctant to leave the company and go home to sit idle

Many senior citizens actually start new, exciting careers after age 65 They take care of their aging bodies with regular exercise and eating healthy diets Some seniors even express that their mental health is much better as they age, compared to their youth

Still, on the other hand, it is a fact that a substantial percentage of seniors in their 70s and early 80s succumb to various physical and mental illnesses Nursing homes around South Florida are not filled with people under 65, but rather seniors approaching or older than age 80

But Joe Biden, at age 80, has no publicly reported health issues. He appears fit and agile, and except for the occasional gaff in his public speeches, he appears fit mentally So, then why should so many people be weary of him running for a second term as president?

Americans seem to have an (old) age discrimination problem In many families, younger members are concerned about the

mental and physical fitness of parents and grandparents as they advance in age Young people tend to question advice given by senior family members, thinking it is outdated Some young folks are even weary of their parents or grandparents operating a motor vehicle if they are over 80

But seniors are quick to point out they are much wiser in their old age, compared to their youth, and the experience of many years of living is invaluable “Do you read and understand your Bible?” an 82-year-old senior citizen asked his 23-year-old granddaughter, who told him he was too old to advise her on a college assignment “The iconic Biblical men and women, including Noah, Abraham, Sarah, Moses, were all quite old when the Lord called them to serve ” And, true, so they were

Many companies utilize the services of senior citizens on their board of directors, or in some very dependable advisory role And chairpersons of several major American private companies are men and women of advanced senior years making significant contributions to keep these companies viable and profitable

There is a compelling argument for the positive role seniors play in private and public service, and, on the other hand, there’s also a strong argument against seniors being involved in certain roles

While seniors like Joe Biden, are confident in their ability to continue serving, and serve effectively, as they age, unfortunately the negative opinion that someone over 80 is too old to be entrusted with some positions, especially positions of leadership can be overwhelmingly negative People tend to be more confident with younger CEOs, company chairpersons, and presidents This is simply human nature

But where are the younger men and women interested in seeking the US presidency? There certainly aren’t many Barack Obama, who won his first term as president at the age of 47, now seems to have been an anomaly. Mostly individuals approaching or at senior age, tend to seek office in the US Senate, US House, and the presidency

It therefore follows that if the Democrats believe Biden is too old to run again, they should be actively pursuing the candidacy of younger candidates to challenge him or replace him as candidate If there is no younger candidate announced to challenge Biden, then America will have an 82-year-old Democratic Party presidential candidate in 2024 But will most Americans vote for an 82-year-old man? Will they think he is too old despite his accomplishments? According to the polls most voters think Biden’s old age is just too old

Montserrat

Why you should visit Despite It’sVolcano

Montserrat is the Caribbean’s hidden secret. The small pear-shaped nation lies in the Lesser Antilles chain of islands. Montserrat embodies the spirit of the Caribbean people. After the Soufrière Hills volcano erupted in 1995, Caribbean nationals from all over – Dominica, Jamaica, Haiti, and more – emigrated to the nation to rebuild it. To this day you’ll hear English radio broadcasts repeated in Haitian Creole and sometimes Spanish

Tiny Population

With just over 5000 people on the entire island, there’s an intimacy to staying in Montserrat. It feels like everyone knows everyone It’s not uncommon for Montserratians to have nicknames for each other – a name you’d only know if you were born there

TheVolcano

For visitors, there’s a lot to see and explore in Montserrat Firstly, visitors will notice its big smoking hill, which is the island’s active volcano, called the Soufrière Hills This volcano continues to churn to this day But, don’t let that put you off from visiting; many precautions have been put in place to not only ensure the safety of tourists, but of Montserratians as well The Montserrat Volcano Observatory monitors all volcanic activity and leads the Mountain A Glow project

Tying in Culture

The Mountain Aglow project celebrates the wit, warmth, and wisdom the eruption and earlier experiences of disaster have generated in Montserrat, and commemorates the hardships they brought The Soufrière Hills is not a looming threat, but part of Montserratian culture Poetry, music, and art have all been made about the volcano While the volcano is technically at risk for eruption, stringent protocol and monitoring set the risk factor at virtually zero Montserrat possesses a robust alert system and local life has adapted to the presence of the temperamental

mountain It’s possible to schedule not only tours of the area devastated in the 1995 and 1997 eruptions that remain uninhabitable to this day, but to tour around the volcano itself Note, it’s only possible to visit these areas under the accompaniment of a licensed guide and often with a police escort Montserrat, for many, is a country that exists off the beaten path, but its cultural makeup – a mashup of various Caribbean cultures – and its unique relationship with disaster, make it a Caribbean country like no other

Alongside his music career, Belafonte also pursued acting He appeared in John Murray Anderson’s Almanac, a musical revue show, for which he won a Tony Award in 1954 He also made appearances in several films, most notably as one of the leads in Island in the Sun with James Mason, Joan Fontaine, and Joan Collins, amongst others

Belafonte’s Jamaican roots have also had a significant influence on his life and career He has always been proud of his heritage, and he has worked to promote Jamaican culture and support the country’s development In 1957, he starred in the film “Island in the Sun,” which was set in Jamaica and dealt with issues of race and class The film was groundbreaking at the time, as it was one of the first Hollywood films to address these issues

The celebrated actor, singer, songwriter and social activist received Jamaica’s fourth highest award in 2018, the Order of Merit (OM) for his outstanding contribution in the field of music

In a message to mark Belafonte’s 95th birthday on March 1, 2022 Jamaica’s Prime Minister Andrew Holness announced that one of the country’s highways would be renamed in his honor Belafonte’s influence on society can be seen in many areas, but perhaps his greatest legacy is his commitment to social justice and equality He has always been willing to use his voice and his platform to speak out against injustice, and he has inspired countless others to do the same Belafonte’s Jamaican roots have also played an important role in shaping his identity and his career, and they have helped to promote Caribbean culture around the world

Jamaican special ed teacher talks stigma against autistic children

April is recognized as Autism Awareness Month to increase understanding of the condition while supporting those affected by the disability. Despite the annual observance, many children with autism frequently experience discrimination Furthermore, many of them, as well as their parents and caregivers, find it challenging to integrate into society due to the pervasive stigma associated with the disability

In light of this ongoing challenge, Jamaican-born, special education teacher, RoAnna Thomas, believes that many people are unaware of the wide range of disabilities and how they affect children

“Having autism doesn’t mean that there is something wrong, it just means that the individual’s brain thinks differently and that is okay” she said

Thomas, who works with sixth graders in Connecticut, in the United States, spends time providing support for students who deal with mental, emotional, or physical disabilities

“I support my students by assessing their skills and determining their educational needs; adapting the general education curriculum to meet their needs; developing, implementing, and updating Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), assessing and tracking student progress, as well as collaborating with parents, general education teachers, administrators, and other service providers to provide support and track progress for students, among other support,” she shared

She said that autism, which is a spectrum, has a wide range of signs and the severity of the symptoms varies greatly However, she noted that common signs tend to be difficulty with communication and social interactions, as well as obsessive and repetitive behaviors

“For example, many of my students engaged in stimming (repetitive) behaviors but for some, it would be pacing or running back and forth, hand flapping, echolalia (meaningless repetition of words), among other signs,” she said

In expressing her joy in working with special needs children, she said that autistic students are one of her favorite student groups because it challenges her to come up with innovative teaching strategies while providing support

“My sister is a general education teacher, and she tells me all the time that she couldn’t do what I do I always laugh but to be honest, I feel the same way about her work Special education has my heart There’s no better feeling than helping a student unlock and access the world around them You’re teaching them in a way that is unique to them and that caters to the way in which they understand and process information,” she said

While acknowledging that two of her biggest challenges are the unpredictability and the stigma that comes with working with students with disabilities, she is more concerned about parents who struggle with the reality of their child’s condition

Thomas advises parents to love and cherish their children while giving them the support they require, despite the difficulties that come with raising children with disabilities like autism

“Embrace them proudly and wholeheartedly Early intervention is key so get help immediately Do not ignore what your child needs in hopes that their disability will magically disappear It will not, but you can teach them how to successfully live with it Tap into your resources If you don’t know where to go, start with your child’s pediatrician Lastly, breathe, be patient, and do your best At the end of the day, what your child needs is your love and unconditional support,” she further

advised

She added that “not enough people understand what autism is,” which adds to the persistence of stigma and discrimination, making it crucial for society to be educated on the disability

“The more educated society becomes, the more open and accepting we will be towards those who not only have autism but those who have other disabilities as well Autism awareness helps us to know how to relate to and aid in supporting those with autism This will allow those with autism and their families to feel less

isolated and more included in a world that tends to cater to those who are able-bodied and neurotypical ”

Thomas strongly believes that breaking the stigma surrounding autism will allow families to be more willing to get the services and support that they need for their children, which will enable those with autism to reach their full potential

Buju Banton & Snoop Dogg release new single “High Life”

Grammy winner, multiple Billboard charttopping artist, and international reggae icon Buju Banton lights up a new single entitled “High Life” featuring Snoop Dogg out now via Roc Nation Records/Gargamel Music/Def Jam Recordings

With its message of being above the clouds yet firmly grounded, “High Life” notably marks the first official collaboration between these two legendary trailblazers, tracing a direct line between Jamaica and the LBC for the first time

The track peppers a hypnotic and headnodding dancehall beat with horns and hazy synths From the jump, Buju gleefully carries an intoxicating and irresistible refrain only for Snoop to counter with reggae-inflected bars as he urges, “Oh Mary Jane, will you please take me home?” Fittingly, this smoker’s anthem arrives just in time for 4/20

“High Life” sets the stage for Buju’s anxiously awaited fourteenth full-length offering later this year, his first album since 2020’s universally acclaimed Upside Down 2020, which garnered a Grammy Award nomination in the category of “Best Reggae Album” and earned rave “4-out-of-5 star” reviews on both sides of the pond from The Guardian and Rolling Stone, respectively

Buju capped off a busy 2022 with his most recent fan favorite single “Si Mi Clean” featuring Busy Signal It tallied over half-a-million streams and picked up plugs from the likes of BET and more

Buju is set to perform his new hits “High Life” and “Si Mi Clean,” along with favorites

from his legendary catalog, at his upcoming shows in Trinidad on May 6, St. Lucia on May 12, and the Bahamas on May 19

Igniting 2023 with a bang, he joined Beres Hammond in concert on New Year’s Day at Grizzly’s Plantation Cove in Priory, St Ann, Jamaica It stood as the first time these two

reggae stars headlined a concert together on the island Plus, it followed his return to the worldwide stage with a much-lauded performance at Kingston’s Famed National Stadium

The Long Walk to Freedom Concert was one of the biggest music events in Jamaica’s history and was the launching pad for the tour of the same name

In 2020, he signed to Roc Nation and dropped “Steppa” and “Trust,” paving the way for Upside Down 2020 The latter featured collaborations with Stephen Marley, John Legend, Pharrell, and Stefflon Don Making waves worldwide, he notably notched his fourth career GRAMMY® nomination for the album

Buju’s Grammy-winning album Before the Dawn was released in 2010 Prior, he unveiled records at a prolific pace, beginning with his debut in 1992 Among many highlights, 1995’s Til Shiloh was certified Gold by the RIAA He has been described by the Associated Press as “ one of the most respected acts in reggae ” Moreover, The FADER hailed him as “ a national hero,” going on to elaborate, “Buju Banton, born Mark Myrie, is more Jamaican than jerk chicken, Red Stripe beer, and a croaking lizard combined He’s as much a singer as he is a hallmark of Jamaican culture ”

Luciano says music needs redemption, admits youths need veterans’ guidance

Masterful and purpose-driven, one of the Caribbean’s most conscious artistes, Luciano, says he has “ so much” to share with the people The artiste is preparing for his follow-up performance at the upcoming Redemption concert in Trinidad, on May 6th He had been featured at the event in 2022 “Trinidad is one of my favorite spots to perform in the Caribbean,” he said recently, noting that the energy, the vibes, and the people

at last year ’ s event, thrilled him

An artiste who has stood firm for spirituality over his many years in the music business, Luciano will be joined at Redemption by Buju Banton, Anthony B, Beres Hammond and T&T’s very own, Black Loyalty

The Guinness-sponsored event, which has been a staple on the entertainment calendar in T&T for eight years, is set to be a mammoth show in 2023

“The reception I receive in Trinidad is really exceptional and when I perform there, it’s a different vibration The people come out to really have a good time,” said the reggae crooner “The people always come out well dressed and ready to show their love for the music- the roots music, especially,” he said With less than a month to go, organizers say the response has been overwhelming

“We can safely say that this year will be one

Athanaze targets runs, leadership experience in Tri-Series

Alick Athanaze says he is relishing the opportunity to be among the runs again when his Team Weekes clash with high-flying West Indies Academy in the second match of the Headley Weekes Tri-Series

The 24-year-old left-hander was the leading scorer during the recently concluded West Indies Championship with 647 runs at an average of nearly 65, and will be leading Team Weekes when the contest gets underway at Coolidge Cricket Ground on Wednesday

“I would definitely like to get some runs here It’s another opportunity to put my name in the hat [for selection] again,” Athanaze said

“I see cricket as bat and ball and as long as I keep following the same process, most of the times you will do well

“Cricket is also an up and down game but let’s see what happens in this game ”

Alick Athanaze also led Windward Islands

10 points behind Harpy Eagles (84) in the fiveround championship which became a twoteam race late on Athanaze said along with scoring runs in the Tri-Series, he was also focussed on continuing to develop his leadership skills

“It’s a good opportunity [to captain Team Weekes],” said Athanaze, who toured South Africa for the Test series last month but did not play

“I see it as a role for the future and I normally do well when I have added responsibility so I think it can be a very good challenge ”

Athanaze leads a Team Weekes side which includes Test players left-handed opener Tagenarine Chanderpaul, all-rounder Raymon Reifer, batsman Devon Thomas and left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul

Brandon King, Keacy Carty and Dominic Drakes are all part of the West Indies white-ball

setup, leaving Team Weekes well stacked in all areas

“I think it’s a good mixture of boys,” Athanaze explained

“They are the top performers [from the West Indies Championship] so we definitely have a good squad They have been playing good cricket so it will be an exciting match

“It’s good having [the experienced players] around to share all their knowledge [especially with] me in this new role at this level ”

WI Academy stunned a star-studded Team Headley by seven wickets in last week’s opener at Coolidge but Athanaze said he expected his side to be prepared for the challenge

“We personally as a team we ’ re excited to play good cricket and seeing they [Academy] are playing good cricket, it’s more exciting for us Now is the time for us to just keep our heads down and try to put on a good performance ”
