Caribbean American Congresswoman Calls For A Statue Of Congress' First Black Woman A Caribbean-American Congresswoman is calling for a statue of the US' first black congresswoman to be erected in the United States Capitol.

FROM DETENTION TO SOTU

Brooklyn Congresswoman Yvette Clarke, who now serves in the seat that Caribbeanroots lawmaker Shirley Chisholm first occupied, has introduced H.R.4856, “to direct the Joint Committee on the Library to obtain a statue of Chisholm for placement in the Capitol.” The bill was introduced in the House on January 19th and has since been referred to the House Committee on House Administration. It has so far garnered 56 cosponsors, including Caribbean-born Congressman Rep. Adriano, Espaillat and Florida Representatives Frederica Wilson and

Caribbean Immigrant Makes It To First State Of The Union After ICE Detention

By Daniel Strom

On Monday morning, Caribbean-born immigrant activist Ravi Ragbir woke up in a U.S. Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention facility in Orange County, New York. But on Tuesday, January 30th, he was in Washington, D.C., attending his first State of the Union. It was a rare moment of celebration for immigrant rights activists and immigrant families, who have too many times in the past year, seen their friends and loved ones in ICE detention, deported. But New York-based, Trinidad-born Ragbir has managed to buck that trend - at least for now - as a federal judge in New York City on Monday ordered ICE to immediately free him. District Judge Katherine Forrest ruled his detention “unnecessarily cruel” and said the executive director of the New Sanctuary Coalition must be given “the freedom to say goodbye.” “I'm still in an outer body experience,” he

U.S. immigration officials are engaging in "psychological warfare" by targeting him and other activists for detention and deportation.

Ragbir said the President's speech was "lled with cruel, empty, hollow words" and that that U.S. immigration ofcials are engaging in "psychological warfare" by targeting him and other activists for detention and deportation.

related to Democracy Now Tuesday, before hopping with his wife, immigrant rights advocate Amy Gottlieb, to attend their first State of the Union as President Donald Trump addressed the joint session of Congress, in a speech peppered with anti-immigrant rhetoric. Ragbir was invited to the speech as a guest of U.S. Rep. Yvette Clarke of Brooklyn, who didn't attend. New York Rep. Nydia Velázquez brought Ragbir's wife as her guest. After the speech, Ragbir told the Associated Press that it was difficult to see the reaction from people in the room who “totally bought into what he (Trump) was saying.” He said the President's speech was "filled with cruel, empty, hollow words" and that that

Ragbir was arrested on Jan. 11th during a routine immigration check-in at 26 Federal Plaza in NYC. He had migrated to the United States from Trinidad in 1991 and got a green card in 1994. But in 2001 he was convicted of wire fraud and spent time in jail. Ragbir was then detained following his release from jail in 2006 - for nearly two years - after a judge ordered deportation because of his conviction. But he was subsequently released after ICE determined he wasn't a danger to the community and years of checking-in with the agency followed. But all that changed on Jan. 11th when he was told then that he would be detained. Ragbir said he passed out upon hearing the news and was then taken by ambulance to Bellevue hospital - where 20 officers were posted to guard him – 10 from ICE and 10 NYPD despite New York claiming to be a sanctuary city. Ragbir told Democracy Now he was then taken shackled alone and taken to Newark

Chisholm, born Shirley Anita St. Hill in Brooklyn in 1924 is of both Guyanese and Barbadian heritage. She became involved in politics while running a child care center. By the 1965, was elected as a Democratic member of the New York State Assembly and in August 1968, she was elected as the Democratic National Committeewoman from New York State.

Guyanese Actress Among Top Notch Black Panther Cast A Guyanese-born, British actress is among the top notch cast for the muchanticipated movie, Black Panther, which is set to officially hit theaters on Feb. 16th. Letitia Wright, 24, plays Shuri, in the movie, the sister of the King and the 'Smartest Person in the World.' The movie features T'Challa, played by actor Chadwick Boseman, return home to the African nation of Wakanda to take his rightful place as king. When a powerful enemy suddenly reappears, T'Challa's mettle as king -and as Black Panther gets tested when he's drawn into a conflict that puts the fate of Wakanda and the entire world at risk. Faced with treachery and danger, the young king must rally his allies and release the full power of Black Panther to defeat his foes and secure the safety of his people. “As far as the technologically-advanced side, in our mind, and in our incarnation, Shuri is the head of the Wakanda Design Group,” Black Panther Producer Moore told the Rant recently. “She's the smartest person in the world, smarter than Tony Stark but she's a sixteen-year-old girl which we thought was really interesting. Again, black faces in positions of power or positions of technological knowhow, that's a rarity. So it's something that's a big part of the film.” Shuri, the princess of Wakanda, was introduced in May 2005 in Marvel Comics' Black Panther #2. However, four years later, she went on to assume the mantle of Black Panther in her own right after T'Challa was

Given that the film's teaser trailer shows T'Challa and Shuri standing in front of a pair of near-identical Black Panther costumes, some have speculated that perhaps she'll follow in the footsteps of her comic-book-counterpart and suit up, herself. Wright was born in Georgetown, Guyana and moved with her family at age 7 to London. Her interest in acting came when she saw 'Akeelah and the Bee' and found the lead character to be a positive role model. Rex Tillerson To Visit Jamaica Will Tillerson Have To Apologize For S-Hole Comment During Visit? News that U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson will visit Jamaica on the final leg of his Latin America trip has stirred some on social media to question whether the country's top diplomat will be asked to apologize or explain his boss' alleged s-hole comments on January.

US Embassy in Kingston says Tillerson will engage regional partners on several issues, including advocating for regional attention to the crisis in Venezuela. During his trip to Kingston, Tillerson will meet with Jamaica's Prime Minister Andrew Holness and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Kamina Johnson-Smith to discuss bilateral and regional security issues as well as Jamaica's successful economic reform efforts. Jamaica will be the final stop for Tillerson, who is also scheduled to visit Austin, Texas; Mexico City, Mexico; Bariloche and Buenos Aires, Argentina; Lima, Perú as well as Bogotá, Colombia between February 1 to 6th.

Jamaica's Police Chief Calls It Quits Even as Jamaican law enforcement fights an uphill battle with a crime rate that is past 100 in less than 30 days, Police Commissioner George Quallo has called it quits. Quallo served noticed last Friday that he would be retiring after less than one year in the post. According to sources close to Quallo, the commissioner, who has been under fire in recent weeks, has been in discussion with the Police Service Commission over this past week. It has been widely speculated since the start of the year that Quallo would be leaving office because of pressure from the Minister of National Security, Robert Montague.

An apparent rift between Jamaica's top cop and the security minister arose following massive traffic delays on the Palisadoes road leading to the Norman Manley International Airport on January 1st. The traffic congestion was caused by unruly drivers parking on the road during a holiday party on a beach adjacent to the road. It was reported that at a meeting with the minister Quallo was given the option to resign, but he refused that option, deciding instead to continue his duties as commissioner until his retirement becomes official in August this year. Police officers retire at age 60 or can opt for early retirement after serving for 30 years. However, Quallo has bought forward his retirement to be effective within the next few days. Deputy Commissioner of Police Clifford Blake is expected to serve as acting commissioner until a replacement is found. Quallo

Grenadians Go To The Polls Next Month Voters in Grenada will go to the polls on March 13th to elect a new government. Prime Minister Dr. Keith Mitchell announced the date on the 39th anniversary of the Grenada coup, which saw the United Labour Party government of Sir Eric Gairy overthrown by the Maurice Bishop-led New Jewel Movement. Parliament in the Spice Island has been dissolved and voter registration closed. Nomination Day is February 20th. Political scientist Peter Wickham believes Mitchell's party has a very good chance of holding on to the reins of government in the March election.

What do you think of Damian Marley winning the 2018 Reggae Grammy? Stephanie Gregg, Miami, FL “I mean I don't think he deserved to win the Grammy but that's what people voted so can't really argue with that. I think Damian Marley has his fan base and always will, whether Chronixx is amazing or not. It's like putting Vybz Kartel vs. Popcaan. Poppy is an amazing artist but Kartel has his fans and will always be respected, just like Damian.” Renaldo Brown, Miami /Jamaica “I have listened to both albums and both are really good albums. I personally prefer Chronixx's album; I feel it's a better body of work. The Reggae Grammy is basically a Marley Grammy because it's like if you don't have a Marley last name, you probably don't stand a chance. Reason why I don't mind Damian winning is because he has a lot of collabs with many Jamaican artists.” Antione, South Florida “I mean i knew everyone was going to give it to a Marley. Prior to the awards, I actually heard really good things about both albums from a variety of people, so maybe it really just came down to a split decision. But I'm sure many people didn't listen to one of the two albums. In my opinion, Chronixx is more for the youth.” Shenica, Baltimore, MD “I personally believe Damian Marley won because he is a Marley. Chronixx's album was amazing, especially being his first one. I have both of their albums and feel like it was unfair and Chronixx deserved to win the Grammy, but how can you expect anything fair from the people who know nothing about music? With all that being said, Damian Marley's album was nice but for the year Chronixx would be my first pick, followed by Jessie Royal and Damian Marley third.” Shamara, Miramar, FL “It's no secret that Damian Marley is talented and makes great reggae music. However, I do think Chronixx deserved to win the Grammy this year. He is the best reggae artist from Jamaica whose songs have done extremely well in Jamaica and internationally. His music is bringing reggae back to life. Some people don't like change and they stick to what they've known. I doubt half of the people who voted for Damian even listened to his album "Stony Hill" but instead based their vote off the fact that he sings "Welcome to Jamrock," which was a hit and his best selling song from 2005. Ad let's not forget his last name is Marley. Those who don't know or listen to reggae music will automatically vote for Damian because he's Bob Marley son.” Kas Bruce, Miramar FL “Being a Jamaican DJ, I've listened to both albums and Chronixx by far had a better year than Damian Marley musically. I believe Chronixx should have won the Grammy. "Chronology" had many hits and people should have given him a chance in the industry for decades. The Grammy is not about who had the best career all around; it's about who had the best music for that particular year and Damian Marley did not have the best album in my opinion.” Pascal, Baltimore, MD “I like Damian Marley but Chronixx deserves this. He was everywhere last year - he was featured on the BBC new artist show, Jimmy Fallon and his tour was phenomenal. But Damian Marley is affiliated with Tidal and he has the Jay-Z fans backing so they gave him the Grammy. Chronixx doesn't care though because he knows people love him and his music.”

Social Development Programs Urgently Needed In The Caribbean People in the Caribbean and the Caribbean Diaspora are simultaneously frustrated, apprehensive and confused about crime in most Caribbean countries. One of the prevailing topics among Caribbean nationals in South Florida today, are the reasons, and suggestions, for solving crime in the region. As the Diaspora continue to receive reports of wanton violent criminal activities, it's understandable that fear and concerns for relatives and friends back home prompt calls for more drastic crime fighting measures by respective governments. However, while policies like increasing law enforcement raids, harsher penalties for gun related crimes and even state of emergencies may be needed, these are as effective as temporary bandages on bleeding wounds. Crime in the Caribbean, or anywhere else, will continue relentlessly unless governments recognize what is staring them in the face. Crime waves result from lack of adequate socio-economic development and weakened educational systems. Today, some 56 years after the collapse of the West Indies Federation, some people still argue that so many small Caribbean islands are incapable of adequately governing themselves because of the economic demands of political independence. Whether this argument is valid or not, the truth is, that whatever wealth there is within respective Caribbean nations isn't being equitably distributed. In most of these countries, the wealth continues to be owned by tiny minorities. While governmental intervention is needed to implement development programs that could provide social and economic opportunities for the majority of populations, such programs have consistently lacked aggression.

Unfortunately, it's the youth who are the primary victims of these weak social development programs. In 1970s Jamaica, the primary objective of the Michael Manley administration was to establish a balanced social development and education program. During the first half of the two-term tenure of this administration, crime was relatively controlled. But foreign powers applied pressure and the government's financial resources dwindled. To obtain financial assistance from multi-national agencies like the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the government was forced to eliminate most

of its social development programs. The unfortunate result was that opportunities and hope also dwindled for the youth, and not surprisingly, crime increased. Since then, successive Jamaican governments have been reluctant to focus on intense social development programs. But if the youth aren't effectively educated; if there are no job training opportunities; if the government and private sector does not have broadbased employment programs, what happens to the youth? They turn to alternative means of making money. They turn to crime, including involvement in violent gang activities, dealing in hard drugs, and in fraudulent or scamming schemes. Unfortunately, these alternative criminal moneymaking schemes are tempting to other emerging youth with limited education and job opportunities. They see youth, a little older than themselves, driving new brand named cars, fashionably dressed and using the latest telecommunication devices and crave that lifestyle. And so, crime increases. Recently, a commentator in a Jamaican newspaper predicted solving the crime problems in Jamaica would take at least 10 years. It could take even longer, unless the government addresses: weak family structures that foster indiscipline and lose values among male and female youth; strengthen the educational system; reintroduce a national, preferable military style youth training program; create job opportunities in the agricultural and manufacturing sectors; improve the country's foreign exchange earning potential without debt financing and hasten to eradicate alternative sources of income earning, including gun and drug dealing and the bourgeoning scam 'industry.' Increased law enforcement and state of emergencies are necessary but only temporary measures to control the escalating crime situation. After these efforts end, crime will resurface unless governments find ways to implement meaningful social development programs that gradually alleviate poverty and keep the expanding youth population positively and profitably engaged.

LA SECCION HAITIENNE Architectural Digest To Help Build 100-Home Village In Haiti

DHS Sued Over Haiti TPS The largest and oldest civil rights organization in the United States, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, (NAACP), has filed a racial discrimination lawsuit against The Department of Homeland Security, (DHS), DHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, and the former acting head of the agency, Elaine C. Duke, over the administration's decision to rescind Temporary Protected Status (TPS), for Haitian immigrants. The lawsuit, which the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund filed in the US District Court in Maryland on January 24th, argues that the agency and its leaders' decision “discriminates against immigrants of color.” The suit seeks the court to void the decision and reinstate the status for thousands of Haitians. The NAACP Legal Defense Fund, which is a separate organization from the NAACP, is representing the civil rights organization and its Haitian members and says the DHS' “irrational and discriminatory government action, is denying Haitian immigrants their right to due process and equal protection under the Fifth Amendment.” “Governmental decisions that target people based on racial discrimination violate our Constitution,” said Sherrilyn Ifill, president and director-counsel of the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund in a statement. “The decision by the Department of Homeland Security to rescind TPS status for Haitian immigrants was infected by racial discrimination … this decision was driven by calculated,

determined and intentional discrimination against Haitian immigrants.” Reference in the lawsuit is made President Trump's alleged derogatory s-hole comment about Haiti and about limiting immigrants from the French-speaking Caribbean nation to increase immigration from European countries. The complaint also points to reports that the president also allegedly said all Haitians “have AIDS” and argues that Trump's “racial bias against Haitian immigrants recalls America's long, ignominious history of discrimination against Haiti, the world's first Black republic.” TPS covers hundreds of thousands of people who are living in the United States and who are temporarily unable to return to their countries of origin because of safety or other concerns after a 7.0-magnitude earthquake devastated the country in January 2010. “The action by the Department of Homeland Security to rescind TPS status for Haitian immigrants is clearly racially motivated,” said Derrick Johnson, NAACP President and CEO.

“The U.S. Constitution prohibits singling out certain immigrants for harsh treatment based on their skin color and/or ethnicity. But more than that, basic fairness militates against this draconian action taken by DHS under the direction of President Trump.” – NAACP President, Derrick Johnson

Architectural Digest editor-in-chief, Amy Astley, said the initiative, which launched in December 2017, is set to coincide with the theme of the February issue: “Design Making a Difference.” It will be featured on all of AD's platforms, which include social media, online and print. Since launching in 2015, New Story has completed more than 700 houses, not just in Haiti, but also in Bolivia and El Salvador. In Haiti, each roughly 500square-foot residence is designed according to Miami-Dade County building codes, and features two bedrooms, a communal area, a shower and latrine, and, in some areas, land on which to grow food. Solar panels generate electricity, and - for the newest - a water system collects and purifies rain. Amazingly, the cost per home comes to just about $6,500. Funded through donations, New Story uses all the money it raises to acquire land and fund construction. “Many people we hire are members of the local communities,” notes cofounder Alexandria Lafci. Maintaining those communities, she explains, is ultimately the goal. Rather than putting up one-off houses that might upset social networks, New Story plans clusters of homes and gives families full ownership to ensure roots that will last for generations.

Should Florida's Former Felons Be Allowed To Vote Again? Would you support a felon regaining his or her voting rights? That's a question Floridia voters will have to answer at the polls this November. Florida is home to about a quarter of the 6.1 million people that are forbidden to vote around the nation because of a felony conviction, according to one estimate by the

nonprofit Sentencing Project. A referendum in the Sunshine states seeks to reinstate those rights for the some 1.5 million former felons. The amendment, if it passes, will restore a felon's voting rights after he or she complete their full sentence, including fines, probation and parole. The exceptions: murderers and sex offenders. They won't regain their rights. Floridians for a Fair Democracy is pushing the agenda.

If the referendum passes, it can have profound implications for the critical swing state. The 2000 Presidential Election, for instance, was decided by 537 votes in Florida. Currently, a person who's finished his/her sentence, completed their parole and paid any fines they had to pay, still cannot win back the right by default. They would have to apply to the governor for clemency, but they can only do that after a waiting period.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH

The Caribbean Inuence On America's Black History

Part 1: 1650 - 1930's

As we commemorate Black History Month, the Caribbean National Weekly is taking this opportunity to present its readers with the series: “Caribbean Influence on American Black History.” We regard this series as important, not only to commemorate Black History Month, but to apprise our readers of the significant impact Caribbean immigrants have made on American history, particularly in light of degrading remarks recently made regarding immigrants from a Caribbean nation and Africa. History relates that people from the Caribbean began migrating, albeit forcibly and in chains to America as slaves, in the 17th century. Around 1650, British slave masters took slaves from Barbados to work on plantations in South Carolina and Virginia, creating the beginnings of a formidable Caribbean community in both states. Up to the 1700s, virtually all the slaves in South Carolina came from Barbados. During the 18th century it was estimated that up to 20 percent of the slaves in South Carolina were from the Caribbean and the majority of the slaves in the northern states, were of Caribbean origin, with slaves in New York originating from the Caribbean and outnumbering those imported directly from Africa by three to one. Along with South Carolina, Virginia and New York, a strong Caribbean community also grew in Boston, Massachusetts. In 1860 it was estimated that one of five Bostonians were born in Barbados, or elsewhere in the Caribbean. After the American Civil War ended in 1865, the foreign-born black population in the U.S, was determined to be of people of predominantly Caribbean origin. This group increased between 1850 and 1900 from some 4,000 to over 20,000. As the Caribbean population took roots in the U.S. it started to make significant contributions. From relative unheralded people like, Robert Campbell, a Jamaican-born assistant principal of Philadelphia's Institute of

Colored Youth, in 1855 to David Augustus Straker, a Barbadian, lawyer, educationalist, journalist and civil rights proponent; Jan Earnst Matzeliger, from Surinam, the inventor of a shoe making machine in the 1870's; William Crogman of St Martin, a Latin and Greek scholar, former president of Clark College and a founder of the American Negro Academy; and Joseph Atwell, a Barbadian, who

in 1867, was the first black man, after the Civil War, to be ordained in the U.S. Episcopal church. In fact, according to one historian, West Indian immigrants at the turn of the nineteenth century, were regarded “as paragons of intelligence and men of breeding.” At the dawning of the 20th century, there was a significant increase in the migration of

Caribbean nationals to America. According to historian Winston James in “The History of Caribbean Migration to the U.S.,” the trend peaked in the 1920's then slowed during the Great Depression in the 1930's.

The U.S. population of black foreigners and their descendants grew from 55,000 in 1900 to 178,300 in 1930, with the overwhelming majority coming from the Caribbean, including Cuba. Although large numbers of Bahamians settled in Florida, New York City became the primary destination, especially Manhattan and Brooklyn. Almost a quarter of the black population in Harlem was said to be of Caribbean origin and was reputed to be the largest West Indian city outside of Kingston, Jamaica. In the 1920's, Caribbean migrants were increasingly attracted to the United States by its high employment and wages, while, simultaneously, the British Caribbean, (in particular), was experiencing economic hardships from the decline in the demand for sugar, as they faced competition from Cuba and Brazil. However, the new migrants not only consisted of laborers, but a middle-class consisting of teachers, nurses and civil servants, who were dissatisfied with low income careers in the Caribbean. This latter group, who advanced their education on coming to the U.S., increased the pool of literate, skilled, white-collared and professional CaribbeanAmericans. In the first three decades of the 20th century, succeeding waves of Caribbean migrants entered the U.S. through New York City, significantly increasing the CaribbeanAmerican population. Unfortunately, since most of the migrants were black, not much recognition was given to a defined Caribbean population. However, notwithstanding, this resourceful and resilient population quickly gained their own identity in all spheres of American life, and especially in business, politics, education, sports, entertainment and the arts. The Caribbean community, produced outstanding people like: Marcus Garvey, Claude McKay, C.L.R. James, Sidney Poitier, Julian 'Canonball' Adderly, and Hubert Harrison, regarded as the Father of Harem Radicalism. Several historians of the CaribbeanAmerican heritage regard the waves of Caribbean immigrants in the early twentieth century, as formulating the infrastructure of Caribbean-American life in the U.S., particularly in New York City. In the 1930's a significant percentage of New York City's black professionals and business-people, found mostly in Harlem, were of Caribbean origin. This wave of Caribbean immigrants fostered a 'Who's Who' in America, particularly black American, history. They include: Malcolm X, Louis Farrakhan, Harry Belafonte, Colin Powell, Cicely Tyson, Shirley Chisholm, Constance Burke Motley, Kareem Abdul Jahbar, Patrick Ewing, Tim Duncan, Yaphet Kotto, Marion Jones, Lauderdale Lakes Mayor Hazelle Rogers and US Senator Kamala Harris.

Take Precautions To Avoid This Year's Deadly Flu With deaths from the flu mounting nationwide and visits to emergency rooms rising sharply for adults aged 65 and over as well as among children, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), and the Florida Department of Health (FDH), are urging the following steps to avoid this year's deadly virus:

Try To Avoid Close Contact With Sick People Avoid contact with sick people and while sick, limit contact with others as much as possible to keep from infecting them. And if you are sick with flu-like illness, the CDC recommends that you stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone except to get medical care or for other necessities.

Remember Your Manners Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze and throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.

Time To Get A Flu Vaccine

Wash Your Hands Often With Soap And Water

The CDC recommends a yearly flu vaccine as the first and most important step in protecting against flu viruses. While there are many different flu viruses, a flu vaccine protects against the viruses that research suggests will be most common. A flu vaccination can reduce flu illnesses, doctors' visits, and missed work and school due to flu, as well as prevent flu-related hospitalizations.

He was later flown to Krome Detention Facility in Miami to be readied for deportation back to Trinidad & Tobago. But his legal team moved to get an order from Judge Forest forced ICE to return Ragbir back to a NYC detention facility. On January 29th, at 6:45 p.m., Ragbir related that his feet, his hands and his stomach were again shackled and he was brought down to New York City following the judge's ruling hours earlier. Upon arriving back in Manhattan, he was served an order of removal for February 10th even as the Deputy Director of ICE NY, offered to drive him to the front door of Judson Memorial Church, the office of his New Sanctuary Coalition. “It is unbelievable the resources they have used for one

person, and the resources I assume they are using to target immigrants and leaders and advocates,” Ragbir told AM New York Tuesday, adding that the Trump administration has cracked down on undocumented immigrants, particularly those of color, to “ethnic cleansing.” “This is something we will be ashamed of in years to come,” Ragbir added. “When he talks about immigrants . . . it's about certain immigrants. We need to be defiant and to stop this crazy talk from this administration.” His attorney, Aliana Das, said it took a lot of legal resources and community support for Ragbir's surprise release but she said she is now worried about the thousands of people who are in similar situation. Meanwhile, Ragbir could be in another immigration detention facility again come Feb. 10th since an order of removal is still hanging over his head like the Sword of Damocles. (NewsAmericasNow.com)

In 1968, Chisholm ran for the U.S. House of Representatives from New York's 12th congressional district, which as part of a court-mandated reapportionment plan, had been significantly redrawn to focus on BedfordStuyvesant. She won the election and became Brooklyn's first black female member of Congress under the campaign theme: “Unbought and Unbossed.” From Congress, Chisholm began exploring her candidacy for President in July 1971, and formally announced her presidential bid on January 25, 1972 in a Baptist church in her district in Brooklyn. She went on to become the first black major-party candidate to run for President of the United States, in the 1972 U.S. presidential election, making her also the first woman ever to run for the Democratic Party's presidential nomination. After a failed bid, she returned to Congress before retiring in 1981. Chisholm died on January 1, 2005, in Ormond Beach near Daytona Beach, after suffering several strokes. She is buried in the Oakwood Mausoleum at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Buffalo, where the legend inscribed on her vault reads: "Unbought and Unbossed." (News Americas Now)

Meditation How it works and who needs it? So what's all the hulabaloo about meditation anyway? Meditation is a whole body experience that engages both mind and body - all by silencing the mind in order to relieve mental and physical stress, from anxiety to aches and pains, to handling even greater concerns like disease or injury. An ancient practice dating back to B.C. in India, meditation has gone mainstream in America, thanks to public awareness from celebrated athletes, artists and entertainers. Renowned athletes like Kobe Bryant, Joe Namath and Arthur Ashe, and TV icon Oprah Winfrey have all proclaimed meditation as a tool for their success. Many now use meditation to create greater awareness and heightened performance. Yogis, martial arts sensei, higher consciousness gurus and life coaches all use meditation to help others

transcend limitations and intolerance. Meditation is, in fact, the most holistic form of relaxation, free of any form of drug enhancement, natural or otherwise. And how does it work? The key is not to force the mind to be quiet, but to allow the mind to flow in and out of conscious thought, training the mind in being still. Most who understand how to meditate report that they are more relaxed afterwards, and are better able to deal with difficult issues. Many report reduced blood pressure and cholesterol levels, improved sleep patterns, and less illness. To start, it is best to meditate for short periods of time, in places that are quiet and free from disturbance. Sit or lay in a position that is most comfortable and allows you to fully and completely relax. Focus on your breathing; breathe in the fresh, clean air, breathe out the stress,

tension and toxins in the blood. As you inhale, open your lungs and allow your chest to expand; as you exhale, allow your body to relax and let the tension release from the top of your head to the tips of your toes. Close your eyes if you will, and allow your mind to drift. Ten minutes is all it takes. Listen to soothing music, or don't; think of something specific – generally a single word works best, or think of nothing. The choice is yours. Let your mind wander, try to get to a place where there are no negative thoughts or emotions. Just be. At the end of ten minutes, as you slowly open your eyes, embrace the beauty within and take in the magnificence of the your being and your surroundings. Do this once a day and within a week you will find yourself being less stressed, and more engaged. Namaste.

10 ADVANTAGES OF MEDITATION 1. Overcome stress 2. Boost your creativity 3. Improve your sex life and increase your libido 4. Cultivate healthy habits that lead to weight loss 5. Improve digestion and lower blood pressure 6. Decrease your risk of heart attack 7. Help overcome anxiety, depression, anger and confusion 8. Decrease perception of pain and improve cognitive processing 9. Increase your focus and attention 10. Increase the size of your most important organ— your brain!

THE WISDOM TOOTH

My gum line looks dark!

Root decay, also referred to as “root caries,” is a cavity that forms on the roots of your teeth. Common in older adults, exposed roots can also occur if your gums have shrunk from gum disease or from improper brushing. These cavities can start faster and spread quicker than other cavities, as the roots of teeth lack the protective hard enamel. It's also harder for the dentist to treat them, as they can spread to the inside of the tooth where the nerve is, causing pain and infection. A large cavity on the root of a tooth can even lead to the tooth breaking off.

Causes Root caries start when bacteria and fermentable carbohydrates attack the root's surface. Studies show microorganisms metabolize simple sugars into organic acids, which dissolve through plaque harbored on the tooth surface. These acids then pass through the root structure and demineralize the tooth, removing calcium and phosphate ions. Dramatic effects occur during this process, with the collapse of collagen due to dissolution of inorganic minerals and the formation of cavities.

Treatment Treatment of root caries depends on the extent of the lesion into the tooth structure. Removal of the infected area is done and replaced with restorative composites.

Why do older adults get root decay? Older adults are more likely to get cavities on the roots of their teeth because: 1. They are more likely to have gum problems that expose root surfaces. 2. Root surfaces are softer than the lower part of the tooth, which is protected by enamel. 3. They are more likely to take medicines that cause dry mouth. Saliva or spit helps protect teeth from cavities. 4. If your mouth is dry, do not suck on hard candies. This makes the cavities get bigger. Use sugar-free hard candies instead. 5. You may have trouble taking care of your mouth because of arthritis or other medical problem such as loss of eyesight. This raises the risk of getting root cavities. If you have had a stroke, you may not realize you have food stuck in your mouth, this can also add to your cavity risk. Forgetfulness is a problem too. Leaving reminder notes for yourself to brush and floss is a good way to improve your oral health. 6. If you have lost some teeth already, it may be harder to chew certain foods. You may choose foods that are easier to chew and are softer. It is very important to brush your teeth after meals with soft foods that have starch like bread, potatoes and pasta. These soft foods contribute to cavities just like sugar.

Caribbean Takeover At 2018 Grammy's There's no question that some of the best moments of the 60th Grammy Awards, held in New York City on Sunday night, belonged to artists with Caribbean heritage. Here are some of the highlights in case you missed it or want to relive the moments.

Damian Marley

the hit “Wild Thoughts” with DJ Khaled and Bryson Tiller. Ri Ri also added another Grammy to her collection after her collaboration on 'Loyalty' with Kendrick Lamar won the Best Rap/Sung Performance award.

Shaggy & Sting

Damian Marley Wins Reggae Grammy

Bruno Mars winning the Grammy Award for Best Album of the Year

Shaggy and Sting performing

These legendary singers first lit up the stage earlier this month at the annual Shaggy & Friends fundraiser benefitting Bustamante Hospital. On Sunday night, Jan. 28th, their Grammy set opened with a skit and a rendition. First, Shaggy and Sting, along with Grammy host, James Corden, teamed up for a 'Subway Karaoke' session, which played on just how

tough New Yorkers can be. All three went undercover and sang on a D train, much to the chagrin of commuters. The scripted segment saw the trio attempt to play The Police's “Every Breath You Take” to no one's delight. Then they tried Shaggy's “It Wasn't Me.” Eventually, they decided that everyone would like the opposite of what people generally want at a concert. They cast aside the hits and played “the new stuff.” And then it was on to the Grammy stage as Sting opened his set with “Englishman in New York” before Shaggy made his grand entrance and the duo performed their new collaborative single, “Don't Make Me Wait,” for the music industry's best and brightest. Stay tuned for a joint album later this year.

Bruno Mars And Cardi B Puerto Rico-roots Bruno Mars, swept the awards, bagging Album of the Year, Song of the Year and Record of the Year. Along with the Dominican/Trini rapper Cardi B, who has risen to stardom, their performance of “Finesse” was an ode to the 90s and was full of vibrancy.

Rihanna, DJ Khaled and Bryson Tiller Always the trendsetter, Bajan superstar Rihanna set the awards audience and the Internet afire when she rocked the steps to South Africa's popular gwara gwara dance, performing

Damian Marley bagged his fourth reggae Grammy this year, beating out Chronixx, Common Kings, J Boog and Morgan Heritage to claim the win for his 18-track album 'Stony Hill.’

Camila Cabello Speaks Up For Dreamers Cuban-born recording artist, Camila Cabello, took a strong stance for Dreamers and DACA recipients at the Grammy's, insisting that she too was a 'Dreamer.' Cabello speech came ahead of her introduction of U2 for a performance on the Hudson with the Statue of Liberty as the background. Both Cabello's speech and U2's performance were a poignant spotlight on the immigration debate that is raging in the US under the Donald Trump administration as the band performed: “Get Out Of Your Own Way.”

Caribbean-American Coach Welcomes Beckham's Team A Florida-based, Caribbean-American soccer coach is among those welcoming David Beckham's soccer team to Miami. Southwest Miami high school soccer coach, Richard Donaldson, was among cheering soccer fans at the Adrienne Arsht Center, who welcomed the announcement by the former English soccer star that he would be bringing Major League Soccer to Miami in 2020 as the 25th franchise in the MLS. Four years ago, on February 5, 2014, Beckham, made a grand announcement that he would be bringing a new team, but he said the journey to Monday's announcement took more twists and turns then a pretzel. Over the four years, the group encountered many problems, including locating a stadium site, loss of investment partners and procrastination in the halls of Miami and Miami-Dade government. But all that's behind, as the team now has committed investors, including Miami businessmen Jorge and Jose Mas and the City of Miami approval to locate the team's stadium at a site in Overtown.

Other Jamaicans — such as middledistance runners Natoya Goule, Simoya Campbell, Kimarra McDonald, Aisha Praught Leer and distance runner Kemoy Campbell are also in the lineup for the meet at The Armory's New Balance Track

and Field Center, at 216 Fort Washington Ave., in Manhattan's Washington Heights section. “It's been a good few years since I've run at the NYRR Millrose Games,” Powell was quoted as saying. “This year will be my first with it being held at the Armory. I hear the Jamaican crowd there is amazing. I'm really looking forward to putting my mark down in a building with such history.”

As Beckham announced in a party like atmosphere at the Arsht Center, its “game's on.” He appeared emotional as he made the announcement, but said he promised his son, who was in the audience, that he “wouldn't get emotional.” He confirmed he will oversee soccer operations and indicated he will be a hands-on owner and plans on having a team that consists of recognized young players, and players from the team's development academy. Among the celebrities congratulating the Beckham group via video Monday, were Jamaican iconic sprinter Usain Bolt, international and South Florida tennis star Serena Williams and entertainers DJ Khaled and JayZ. MLS Commissioner Don Garber gave Beckham and his partners MLS scarves, indicating the deal was done as fans like Donaldson, clamored to learn the name of Beckham's team. But Beckham announced that the team's name, logo and colors will announced within the next few months since local fans are being

invited to suggest ideas for the team's name, colors and logo via an international social media campaign in the coming weeks. Beckham also indicated his team will consist of local players, as he believes there is great soccer talent in South Florida. Donaldson is convinced that several local soccer players will make it to Beckham's MLS team. “Some of the best soccer players in America plays right here in South Florida,” he told CNW. “Many are frustrated by the lack of advancement as professional players. Now they can develop their ambitions as professionals with the possibility of making it to the local MLS team.” Beckham's MLS team is the successor to another Miami team, the Miami Fusion, which played in the MLS for four years before calling it quits in 2002. Since it's estimated that the Overtown MLS stadium will not be completed until 2021, the team will play at a temporary site, either Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, FIU Stadium in South Miami, or Marlins Park in Miami as of 2020.
