Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce turned back the hands of time in a most spectacular fashion in 2022, as she dominated women's 100m sprinting in a manner which was never-ever witnessed before in the annals of track and field

The outstandingly talented Fraser-Pryce not only copped her record-extending fifth 100m World Athletics Championships crown, but she also delivered a series of scintillating, fast-time sprinting which had never been seen before

It culminated with her fifth Diamond League Trophy and a string of meet records to add the cherry on the top

The 35-year-old mother had shown signs of durability and return to top form during the previous season with an eye-popping personal best 10 60 seconds, and a silver medal at the

While it is always easy to recognize Caribbean leaders from the more prominent islands like Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago and Barbados, 2022 was the year when President Irfaan Ali of Guyana stood tall as he quietly carried out some monumental accomplishments for Guyana and the region that earned him the Caribbean National Weekly Male of the Year for 2022.

Under the leadership of President Ali, Guyana has accomplished tremendous things in 2022 at the local, regional and international levels

Locally, the year 2022 saw Guyana:

The Public Works Ministry signed a $52 billion (US$260 million) contract for the construction of the new bridge on May 25 last year Ali indicated that the project forms part of his plans to expand and modernize the country's transport infrastructure and significantly reduce the incessant traffic woes on the East Bank of Demerara

President Ali made good on his promise to share Guyana's newfound oil wealth with all Guyanese nationals In 2022, Ali announced an eight percent across-the-board retroactive increase to public servants, teachers, health care workers, members of the disciplined services, constitutional office holders, as well as government pensioners, and workers in the sugar industry

In addition to the across the board, several other specified groups also received increases ranging from 23-67 percent including soldiers who also received a 100 percent bonus for the month of December and special construction grants to build houses

Developing the country's Education system

President Ali also placed great focus on the education development of Guyana He reestablished the Guyana Teaching Service Commission (TSC) thereby reconstituting a

constitutional body that is geared toward moving swiftly to address the shortage of teachers and the promotion of some members of the teaching profession Five persons were sworn in as members of the new commission

The Guyana government also signed an agreement with the International Development Association (IDA) to boost the education sector by expanding access to quality education at the Secondary level as well as improve technical and vocational training (TVET)

President Ali also started a coding school as well as a law school in Guyana

The Council of Legal Education (CLE) approved a request to establish a law school in Guyana after years of attempts

Guyana partnered with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to launch the Guyana Coders Initiative (GCI), as the administration moves to transform the nation into a hub for Information and Communications Technology (ICT)

Ali said the move towards nurturing local digital talents will ensure the country assumes a firm position to match the evolving technological world

President Ali and his team intend to spend an estimated GUY$125 billion (One Guyana dollar=US$0 004 cents) in improving the health care services for residents in the hinterland supporting critical upgrades to hospitals over the next three years

He said importantly all the facilities will also receive the necessary equipment to provide critical services to the public Steps will be taken to ensure basic medications are available at all health institutions

In addition to the GUY$125 billion investment in the hinterland area, seven new hospitals to deliver quality health service to Guyanese in all regions will be constructed

Millions have also been invested in the country's mental health and the rehabilitation of inmates

Guyana has also signed an agreement with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Bank to facilitate the updating of the Performance of Veterinary Services (PVS) assessment

With a major financial injection into the Guyana Police Force, the country has reported less than 108 murders so far 2022. That is the lowest level in the past decade as law enforcement authorities indicated that serious crimes

Tokyo Olympic Games, but compatriot Elaine Thompson-Herah had appeared on a different level, having surpassed her as the fastest woman alive with a magnificent 10 54 seconds in late season

But class is permanent, and one thing was already known – “Mommy Rocket” packed pure class

She established an early world lead of 10 67 seconds in Nairobi, Kenya, but missed a few of the opening Diamond League meets However, like fine wine, Fraser-Pryce exhibited a string of performances never before seen from a sprinter of her age, beginning with victory in another 10 67 in a meeting record inside the Stade Charlety in Paris, France to open her 2022 Diamond League points tally in immaculate fashion

From then on, she simply appeared to be in a league of her own, as she followed up with her fifth World Athletics Championships 100m gold medal with another 10 67 seconds clocking to lead a Jamaica clean sweep of the podium places in Eugene, Oregon in July Shericka Jackson snatched silver with Thompson-Herah taking the bronze medal

Back on the Diamond League circuit in

August, Fraser-Pryce improved on the world lead by smashing the Silesia meet record with a 10 66 second performance in Poland

And there was more to come as by the time she visited Fontvieille, Monaco, in mid-August, Fraser-Pryce was literally flying and leaving the competition in her wake

She booked her Diamond League final berth with another mouth-watering meet record and new world lead of 10 62 seconds

There were high expectations for her in the Lausanne meet a week later, but a last-minute injury setback forced her out of the event and almost ended her season

But as fate would have it the injury wasn't as bad as first feared and she returned to action in Brussels but had to settle for second place heading into the Zurich Diamond finale

In the finale she cruised to 10 65 seconds to claim her fifth Diamond trophy and culminate a season in which no one had ever ran as many 10 67 seconds and lower in any one season

Truly a splendid season and one which will live long in the memory The danger to her rivals She plans on carrying on and even to attempt the world record of 10 49 seconds

They should be afraid, very afraid

in the country had declined by 19 percent President Irfaan Ali also gave his assurance that Guyana will continue to champion the peaceful resolution in the territorial controversy with neighboring Venezuela

He said the government will not support any use of force as a means of settling any dispute or controversy among nations

As Ali tries to make life comfortable for those in Guyana, he is also ensuring that residents have access to the international world

Guyana has asked Canada to lift tourist visa for nationals trying to enter the North American country, Canada's High Commissioner to Guyana, Mark Berman, has said

The United Kingdom lifted decades-long visa restrictions for Guyanese, allowing them to stay there up to six months British Airways began serving the Guyana-UK route in November

The Guyana Cabinet gave the go-ahead for the construction of a 300-megawatt natural gas power plant that is expected to cut electricity bills in half

Ali also signed several international agreements geared towards the preservation of the country's forest and natural resources

Guyana and the European Union (EU) signed a legally binding trade agreement to promote the sustainable trade of legal timber from Guyana to the European bloc and counter illegal logging in Guyana

Ali has also proven to be a firm supporter of CARICOM through his many programs geared at improving the region

Guyana will be supplying ready-made houses to St Vincent and the Grenadines more than two years after the La Soufrière volcano erupted, wreaking havoc across the country

President Dr Irfaan Ali has declared that Guyana will be the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) focal point for training in smart farming and agriculture

Guyana has also signed several agreements with its Caribbean neighbors including Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, Suriname and Barbados

Throughout 2022, Ali has been steadily positioning Guyana to be a major force internationally

Oil production in Guyana and Brazil is expected to substantially increase in 2023, successfully anchoring production growth in the Latin America region the country is already producing about 360,000 barrels of oil per day

Guyana has also signed agreements with the United Arab Emirates, Great Britain, Dominican Republic, Netherlands, China and Canada

One of his major international moves for 2022, is the announcement by Ali that some of the oil blocks to be auctioned will be set aside for government-to-government partnerships in the future

For his accomplishments in 2022, Ali was awarded the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award (PBSA), by the government of India, the highest honor conferred on overseas Indians Ali received the award for politics and community welfare

It wouldn't be surprising if resolutions made

for 2023 are already broken Somehow, New Years' resolutions are broken quickly It would be much better if people focused in the new year on how they can, if possible, improve unresolved problems of the past year

Left over problems abound from 2022 Problems that continue to effect individuals, families, communities, and nations

As the Caribbean National Weekly reviews news of 2022, it takes a look of some of the unresolved problems of the past year, which the necessary authorities are urged to address in 2023

Topping the list of unresolved problems from 2022 is the problem of violent crime in the Caribbean and the USA Residents in both regions have grown weary of media reports of incidents of violent crime, particularly gun related crimes One of the first local news items of 2003 related to a motorist driving on I-95 in Miami-Dade being shot by an unknown assailant Shootings of motorists on South Florida highways occurred frequently during 2022, and the authorities are urgently urged in 2023 to introduce patrol mechanisms on the main highways before these incidents become uncontrollable

Tragically, 2022 was marked by more mass shootings in several US communities Each of these incidents gives resurgence to the debate over gun control laws Hopefully, in 2023 this debate will be resolved to protect the lives of Americans attending schools, colleges, churches, nightclubs, sport events, shopping at malls, and going about their normal lives But, for the Jamaican Diaspora, although they are concerned about violent crime in their American communities, this pales in comparison to violent, bloody crimes in Jamaica

There's a strong, persistent belief that the incumbent Jamaican government is pussyfooting when it comes to taking measures to control violent crime While the government has been attached to the imposition of States of Emergency to solve crime, crime continues unabated Three is urgent need for more fundamental policies, preferably, one brokered through consensus between the government, the parliamentary opposition, law enforcement leaders, and the private sector If this is a problem too profound for the government to solve, then it may be better if it gracefully resign in 2003, and let the people decide on what they perceive as the better political arty to protect them from crime and violence

The anarchy in Haiti worsened throughout 2022 It seems, increasingly, the impact and existence a formal government in that country is diminishing Instead, armed gangs have taken over the streets, creating serious crisis in that beleaguered country Haiti is begging order, effective law enforcement, government, social and economic development Is the rest of the world, including France, Canada, the US, and the United Nations going to maintain a standoff attitude, locked in indecisiveness about assisting Haiti to free itself from anarchy? Hopefully, in 2023 the international community finds a strategy, preferably not one militarily based, to pull Haiti out of its downward spiral Healthcare was another unresolved problem in 2022 Americans enter 2023, with a triple threat of viruses – respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), influenza, and another COVID variant Hospitals are reportedly overcrowded with patients, including large numbers of children The situation is expected to worsen as the cold winter months prolong But why are

these viruses so prevalent? Why is COVID so persistent, despite the application of vaccines and related boosters It's concerning that people who willingly got COVID vaccines, are now doubting the effectiveness of these vaccines Many vaccinated people have still contracted COVID Somehow, there exists a disconnect between America's healthcare authorities and the public Hopefully, in 2023 there will be consensus about the source, and treatment of these viruses, and not the conflicting messages disseminated throughout 2022

Jamaica is also has serious healthcare challenges The health ministry, and minister, came under serious criticism in 2022 for various miscues But the problem is that the Jamaican healthcare infrastructure is woefully weak This weakness, characterized by shortage of hospitals, clinics, healthcare personnel, medication, and crucial medical equipment, has progressed from government to government since 1962

Sadly, two prevailing reasons why migrated Jamaicans are reluctant to return home to Jamaica to reside, are violent crime and the weak healthcare system These are, interestingly, areas in which they should be much more effective collaboration between Jamaica and its Diaspora Hopefully, in 2023 Jamaican authorities, private and public, will be more conducive to entertaining input from the Diaspora in attempting to being solutions to the crime and healthcare problems Effective, pragmatic, plans needs developing within the Diaspora, that can realistically help bring solutions in these areas in 2023

Yes, 2023 has inherited 2022 problems The challenge isn't to linger on the past, but to find solutions to these problems throughout 2023

Reggae Girlz striker Khadija 'Bunny' Shaw has been listed among the world's top 100 female footballers in 2022 by British media outlet The Guardian

The 25-year-old Manchester City forward was listed in the 62nd spot, seven positions lower than last year. Despite the slight drop in position, The Guardian said she will rise well up the rankings in 2023 if her form at the end of 2022 continues

It was an iconic sight that finally — definitively — places the soccer superstar in the pantheon of the game's greatest players Messi's once-in-a-generation career is complete: He is a World Cup champion. In probably the wildest final in the tournament's 92-year history, Argentina won its third World Cup title by beating France 4-2 in a penalty shootout after a 33 draw featuring two goals from the 35-year-old Messi and a hattrick by his heir apparent, France forward Kylian Mbappé

Entering the final must-win Group B qualifier with high hopes of reaching the Super 12s main draw, West Indies hardly troubled an audacious Irish side, gathering an inadequate 146 for five from their 20 overs and then watching as the target was overhauled with 15 balls to spare at Bellerive Oval. Head coach Phil Simmons apologized for the side's disappointing performance as he submitted his resignation

Africa finally had a team in the World Cup semifinals, and so did the Arab world. Jamaica's women shattered their own world under-20 4x100 meters record in taking gold on a stormy penultimate day at the World Athletics Under-20 Championships in Cali in a time of 42 59sec Inspired by Tina Clayton, who ran 10 95 to retain her individual title, the Jamaican quartet reduced the mark of 42 94 set at the World Championships in Nairobi Fittingly for athletes with such a rich sprinting heritage, lightning bolts filled the sky as they secured their victory, with Clayton running the second leg and her twin sister Tia bringing the baton home, just as they had in Nairobi. Serena Cole and Kerrica Hill supplied the speed on the other legs as the United States team earned silver in a national under-20 record of 43 28, with bronze going to the home quartet in 44 59

Jamaica's Sunshine Girls won a first-ever silver medal in the Commonwealth Games netball final against Australia inside the NEC Arena. In their maiden gold medal match at the competition, against the world's best team making its seventh-straight final appearance, the Sunshine Girls represented themselves admirably before losing 51-55. So good were the Jamaicans on the netball court that they held the world number one – whom they had beaten in Pool A group play at the Games for the first time – at even keel at 29 at the halfway stage
