Surreal Moment For
The Legend by Cnweeklynews.com
“Surreal!” That's how the GOAT, (Greatest Of All Time), Usain St. Leo Bolt, is reacting to his own statue on his home turf. “Just a kid from Sherwood,” the triple Olympian Bolt, added by Tweet hours after an eight-foot bronze statue in his likeness was unveiled at Jamaica's National Stadium in Kingston, Jamaica on Sunday, Dec 3. The statue, sculpted by Basil Watson, shows Bolt making his trademark: 'To The World,' stance. It stands in front of the place where 15 years ago, the Sherwood Content, Trelawneyborn athlete, won the junior championships and announced himself to the world. The Jamaican sprinter, who retired from a superlative career in track and field after the IAAF World Championships London 2017, was at the ceremony to show his appreciation for the statue.
“For me this is up there, it can't be doubted that this is one of the greatest moments in my career," Bolt said. "Having a statue in the National Stadium where it all began; there are no words, I am just happy and really excited about this." – Bolt

He added: "It was all worth it: the losses, the injuries, everything I've been through, it's all worth it. It's a wonderful thing to look back and see what your career has brought you. I'm very happy and proud of myself for the work. It's just a good time and I am in a good place." Bolt credited his achievements to his ability to stay focus on the goal at hand, fueled by the guidance of coach Glen Mills and also thanked his parents for teaching him humility which has
allowed him to stay grounded despite his fame. Jamaica's Prime Minister, Andrew Holness, who unveiled the statue and was the guest speaker at the event, said Jamaica owed Bolt a lot for the branding capital he has given to the country. “We are proud of the achievement of our national treasure, Usain Bolt," Holness said. Others paying tribute at the unveiling ceremony were Warren Blake, President of the
Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA); Victor Lopez, President of the North American, Central American and Caribbean Association of Athletics (NACAC); Sebastian Coe, President of the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF), who spoke via video; Sports Minister Olivia Grange; former Jamaican prime ministers Edward Seaga and PJ Patterson, and Dr. Peter Phillips, Leader of the Parliamentary Opposition. Bolt, 31, set world records in the 100 and 200 metres over the years, winning 11 world and eight Olympic golds. He ended his stellar sprinting career with bronze in the 100-m at the world championships in London earlier this year.

TT Private Sector Condemns Sexual Harassment In The Workplace The Trinidad and Tobago Chamber of Industry and Commerce, (TTCIC), says it “strongly condemns any behavior or act of a sexual nature which might be deemed as sexual harassment” amidst a growing controversy involving a senior executive of a major company in the twinisland republic. In a statement, the private sector group said that it condemned any acts of sexual harassment, whether it is committed in the workplace, school, home “any institution or space.” Earlier this year, Angostura Holdings Limited, (AHL), said it had cleared its chairman, Dr. Ralph Balgobin, of allegations of sexual harassment following a report done by Justice Rolston Nelson, a former judge of the Trinidad-based Caribbean Court of Justice, (CCJ). In November 2016, the senior female executive filed a police report alleging sexual advances by the company's chairman. Balgobin, a former independent legislator and president of the Trinidad and Tobago Manufacturers' Association, (TTMA), has denied the allegation. Last week, former T&T Attorney General, Ramesh Lawrence Maharaj, said his client, who has since been relieved of her duties at the company, intends to “go the full distance” and had offered to resign by year's end once she was paid the sum of TT$8 million. Meanwhile, number of non-government and civil society groups have called for a boycott of AHL until Balgobin steps down.
BLACKLISTED!
Four Caribbean Community, (CARICOM), countries have made the black list of global tax havens. That's according to the latest tax-haven blacklist, compiled by the European Council's Code of Conduct (COC) group, and released this week. EU finance ministers said Barbados, Grenada, St. Lucia and Trinidad and Tobago are among 17 countries on the blacklist of tax havens, after 10 months of investigations by EU officials. Caribbean countries have in the past been very critical of being included on the list, insisting that they have done everything as outlined by various European organizations, including the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, (OECD). The finance ministers who met in Brussels on Tuesday also named the American Samoa, Bahrain, Guam, South Korea, Macau, Marshall Islands, Mongolia, Namibia, Palau, Panama, Tunisia and the United Arab Emirates to the list. They said blacklisted nations were not doing enough to crack down on offshore avoidance schemes and potential sanctions could be enforced on members of the list in the coming weeks. This year's list excludes a number of British Overseas Territories, such as the Cayman Island and Bermuda, which were on previous EU blacklists from June 2015.

Jamaican Born Jurist Resigns From Belize Appeal Court Jamaican-born jurist, Franz Parke, has resigned as a member of the Court of Appeal in Belize, more than two months after his appointment as a judge sparked controversy in the Central American CARICOM country. A statement from the Office Of The Prime Minister of Belize late Monday, noted that it was “in receipt of a copy of a letter sent to the Governor General Sir Colville Young by Justice of Appeal Franz Parke in which he tendered his resignation from the Belize Court of Appeal with immediate effect.”
Parke
The brief statement said it “understands that Justice Parke made his decision in order to spare the Court any exposure that a trial on the issue of his tenure would create.” The opposition to Parke's appointment included claims that he had not practiced in the Caribbean since 1980, despite graduating from law school with Prime Minister Errol Barrow in 1975. Opposition Leader, John Briceño, who was among persons opposed to the appointment, has since said he would be withdrawing his claim before the courts on the issue.

Do you think mental illness and suicide prevention are discussed widely enough in the Caribbean community? Francis Taveras, Miami “No. I personally think in the Caribbean, mental illness and suicide are considered a taboo and people don't talk about it as they should. They prefer to discuss it at home and sometimes even not even then. I think we need to take the time to help people understand that needs to be treated.” Vanessa Rostant, Miami “I would have to answer no. Even in today's forward-thinking world, I still feel that there is a stereo-type associated with mental illness and not nearly enough compassion. Many people, in my opinion, do not understand that mental illness is a very real disease. In the Caribbean community, especially, I feel that people brush things under the rug in many cases, instead of addressing it, possibly for fear of being shunned by their peers or being judged.” Sunita Mohammed, Miami “No, not really! I personally think some people in the Caribbean Community believe mental illness is “not real” or are in denial about it, thinking it's a stereotype and that people are “crazy” as opposed to actually dealing with a mental issue. It's very sad because I do believe it should be spoken about more and taken more seriously.”

Shamara Passley, Pembroke Pines “No, but maybe now that it's starting to affect more Caribbean families, I do hope mental illness and suicide prevention is taken more seriously and programs are created to help people get the help they need. Unfortunately real people suffer from real pain/anxiety within themselves and never speak about it. People go years without telling people about their condition and end up dead because they didn't even feel comfortable enough to talk about it or reach out for help; and people are too quick to judge.”

Donovan Harris, Jamaica “No it is not. It's almost taboo to talk about mental health in the Caribbean based on the fact that it isn't taken seriously. Most discussions about mental health to anyone is met with aggression and immediately shut down making them feel more obligated to speak about what it is that may be bothering him or her; this in turn causes the victim to clam up.”

By encouraging more dialogue in our communities on this topic, we can change the perception of identifications and interventions being a negative long-term classification of the child to being a resource that will help the child maximize his or her potential.”

Jamaica's Skin-Color Dilemma It's ironic for a nation with a population that's predominantly of dark or black complexioned people to be so pre-occupied with the shade of their skin. But the grand success, in an international beauty pageant, of a black Jamaican young woman, wearing her hair in a natural, non-chemical processed fashion, brings focus to the subject of skin color in Jamaica. skin color. The two factors are, moreover, closely intertwined. It would be dishonest to not admit, although less prevalent today than in the 1960s, that the less dark one's complexion is, the more likely one is to advance in Jamaica's social class. In the 1960s and early 1970s, to see a blackskinned Jamaican woman as a teller in a Jamaican commercial bank was a rarity. Those jobs went to lighter-skinned, white, or Chinese women. To this day, there are Jamaican families who frown upon a light-skinned daughter or son taking a very dark-skinned man or woman to be their spouse. It was not uncommon, for parents to caution their sons and daughters not to marry someone they determined to be “too dark-skinned” because “the pickney dem will come out too black.” The pre-occupation with light skin color was very evident in Jamaican beauty pageants. Invariably, winners were light skinned, long/straight haired women, with Caucasian features. It was not until 1968 that the first black woman, the late Karlene Waddell, won the Miss Jamaica title. But her hair was long and processed. Very few dark complexioned women have won either the Miss Jamaica World or Miss Jamaica Universe titles since. Unfortunately, unable to enter certain class categories, or lacking confidence in their color to get certain jobs, some dark skinned/black Jamaicans have adapted the current trend of bleaching their skin with chemicals to look “whiter.”
The history of Jamaica, like other Caribbean countries, is characterized by the period of slavery. During the 17th to mid-19th century, black men and women captured in West Africa, were brought to Jamaica to work as slaves on sugar plantations. These slaves are forefathers of most of Jamaica's population. Laborers from India and China were later brought in to replace the slaves. However, the economic and political power rested in the hands of white colonialists from England. Many years later, a white merchant class joined the increasing racially eclectic society from places like Lebanon and Syria. Not surprising, with people of different races living in a small country, the races inter-bred and inter-married. The result was a peculiar mixed race, characterized by the “browning' of the masses. The population was comprised of shades varying from dark black to 'fair,' or very light-skinned Jamaicans, sometimes described as 'mulattoes.' It was most fitting that in 1962, as Jamaica sought its new attributes of pending political independence, the national motto selected was: “Out Of Many, One People.” Translated, the motto means out of the varying races within Jamaica, there's a unified nation. While it's true that Jamaica is a singular melting pot consisting of people of different races - and racism really isn't a negative prevailing factor - the people are not exactly one. Often, the factors prohibiting the 'oneness' referred to in the national motto are social class and

An informal commercial sector is functioning in Jamaica with people offering a variety of dubious, risky products, purported to be able to lighten dark skin. It is against this background, that the positive response from Jamaicans, to the success of darkskinned Davina Bennet wearing an Afro hairstyle in the 2017 Miss Universe pageant, seems very interesting. Although the Afro is re-emerging as a trendy hairstyle, it's doubtful that it's acceptable in mainstream Jamaican society today as it was in the 1970s, during the Black Power movement. Some Jamaicans were even critical of Davina competing with an Afro, doubtful she would advance. Now, Davina is being hailed for her determination in competing in the popular pageant with an Afro. It is hoped, that the thrill over her success will be motivation for more dark-skinned Jamaicans - men and women, to be proud and confident of their skin color. It is also hoped, that lighter-skinned Jamaicans who hailed Davina's achievement, will become more respectful of darker-skinned Jamaicans in all aspects of Jamaican society.

Haiti-Born, Miami State Senator To Chair TPS Advocacy Task Force Cap-Haïtien-born, Miami State Senator, Daphne Campbell, has been named as the chair of the Haitian Temporary Relief Task Force, an organization formed to advocate on behalf of tens of thousands of Haitian refugees in Florida who fled their native country but now face deportation in the near future. The appointment of Senator Campbell was made earlier this week by Representative Kionne McGhee, who heads the Miami-Dade County Legislative Delegation. Her selection comes on the heels of the
decision rendered by the Donald Trump Administration on November 20th that Temporary Protected Status, (TPS), for some 60,000 Haitians will end in July 2019. Senator Campbell has been advocating on behalf of the TPS recently and has held meetings with Special Assistant to the President and Deputy Director to the White House, Billy Kirkland; Special Advisor for Western Hemisphere & Global Economics - Office of the Vice President, Landon Loomis, as well as Omarosa Manigualt, Assistant to the President and Director of Communications Office of Public Liaison. Senator Campbell said she is eager to begin work as the Chair of the Haitian Task Force and continue her legislative advocacy until Haitians and other refugees receive permanent residency status in the U.S. The Miami Democrat was elected to the Senate last year after serving six years in the House.

Protestors Attack Police Station Near Haitian Border A woman is dead after people in the Border Commune of Beladère, Haiti, attacked a police station demanding the release of a man arrested who was arrested last Friday. Beladère is one of the four main land crossings to the Dominican Republic. Media reports said the woman, whose name was not released, was reportedly suffering from hypertension and died at her home as officials from
the Departmental Unit of Maintenance of the Order, (UDMO), fired teargas and bullets to restore order. But the residents, who had initially retreated to safe areas, returned erecting barricades of burning tires and threw stones at the police station, destroying several vehicles. The incident late on Friday, Dec. 1, 2017, caused major traffic delays and vehicles from the Dominican Republic had to wait several hours until the situation returned to normal for access to the city of Belladère.

Although admitting she didn't know Hawthorne “all that well” personally, she is well aware of his “business strength and contribution to the community.” Mayor Rogers expressed special condolence to Hawthorne's sister, Cassandra, who heads Golden Krust's operation in South Florida and the rest of his family. “My heart goes out to Cassandra and all the Hawthorne family, immediate and extended, during this tough time,” she added. Eat At Your Own Risk Eating out this holiday? You may want to pay close attention to these eight South Florida restaurants which were recently shuttered by state inspectors due to health code violations. A Haitian pastry shop in North Miami was shuttered by the state after an inspector found a live rodent floating in a sink with food storage containers. The rodent was found at Cayard's Bakery in North Miami, where records also show a roach infestation and a "stop sale" was ordered for food that was found to be out of temperature. This is the second time this bakery has been ordered shut. State records show Cayard's was also ordered shut in April 2015. Meanwhile, roach activity was also found at: Ÿ The Waffle House on Powerline Road in Fort Lauderdale;

Health Ofcials Issue New 2017 Blood Pressure Guidelines The American Heart Association, (AHA), and the American College of Cardiology, (ACC), recently led a group of health professional organizations to issue new guidelines for diagnosing high blood pressure. The new guidelines were unveiled on November 13, 2017 at the AHA's Scientific Sessions 2017, in Anaheim, California. “We're recognizing that blood pressure that we in the past thought were normal or so-called 'pre-hypertensive', actually placed that patient at signicant risk for heart disease, death, and disability. The risk hasn't changed. What's changed is our recognition of the risk.” – Robert Carey, Co-chair of the ACC/AHA group

PULSE These medical experts have changed the / min commonly accepted threshold of 140/90 mmHg to 130/ 80 mmHg. This change in START threshold now means that approximately 14 STOP percent more American adults will be diagnosed with hypertension. Before this change, a patient visiting his/ her healthcare provider at any primary medical care center or urgent care clinic in Miami, Fort Lauderdale or anywhere in South Florida would not be treated for high blood pressure if measured at 130/80 mmHg. The new guidelines also recommend that more patients should be counseled on lifestyle changes, such as, improved diet, increased exercise, lower consumption of alcohol, less sodium, and less stress. According to the new guidelines, only 2 percent of newly diagnosed people with hypertension would require medication. The researchers hope that by making earlier diagnoses with lowered numbers, more lives will be saved without the reliance on prescription drugs. Normal blood pressure is still measured at 120/80. However, new categories were revealed, such as, “Elevated” (120-129/80), “Stage 1 Hypertension” (130139/80-89), “Stage 2 Hypertension” (140+/90+) and “Hypertensive Crisis” (180+/120+).

achieve that goal in 2015. These countries were validated at a ceremony in St Kitts Nevis as part of activities marking World AIDS Day, Dec. 1, 2017. “On this day, the Caribbean signals to the world that our region can be the first to end new HIV infections among children,” host Prime Minister, Dr. Timothy Harris, said.
PAHO technical advisor, Sandra Jones, said she is looking forward to the region achieving even more public health goals in the future. “We have started the elimination of the mother to child transmission of HIV, and so it is telling us that we could really eliminate HIV and Syphilis as public health problems,” Jones said.
The son of a baker from the parish of St. Mary in Jamaica, Hawthorne, along with his wife Lorna and four siblings, opened the first Golden Krust retail location in Bronx, New York in 1989. Today there are over 120 restaurants in nine U.S. states. Hawthorne was the recipient of several local, national and international awards for his business success and philanthropy. With such a success story, it is no wonder his demise sent shock waves across the United States and the Caribbean. Hawthorne succumbed to a self -inflicted bullet wound on the evening of December 2nd at his main office in the Bronx, NY. According to NY police reports, Hawthorne, 57, was found dead shortly after 5 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 2, 2017, in his office at the company factory at 3958 Park Avenue in the Bronx, NY. Investigators recovered a handgun and a note but the contents were not revealed.

Windies Skipper Suspended Ahead of Second Test The beleaguered West Indies cricket squad will be without their skipper as they go 0-1 into the second test match against New Zealand on Sat. Dec. 9, 2017. Captain Jason Holder was suspended by the International Cricket Council, (ICC), on Tuesday for one Test, after his team was found guilty of maintaining a slow over rate during their defeat to New Zealand in the first test on Dec. 1st. A spineless batting effort last Friday sent the West Indies crashing to an innings and 67-run defeat in their opening test match against New Zealand. For New Zealand, the win gave them a precious 1-0 lead in the two-match series, ensuring they extended their record of not having lost a series to the Windies at home in 22 years. Holder, 26, will miss the second test in Hamilton and has also been fined 60 per cent of his match fee, while his teammates incurred a 30 per cent fine after the West Indies were charged with the over-rate offence following their defeat in Wellington.
