Jamaica Gangsters Arrested in Broward Jamaican authorities say that the majority of migrants who arrived illegally in South Florida on a boat last Thursday are linked to criminal activities in Jamaica.
At a press conference on Sunday Jamaica's police commissioner, Major Antony Anderson was asked if there was an investigation into why the migrants had fled the country. He revealed that of the 14 people that were detained, seven were Jamaican. Four of the seven have also been linked to criminal activity on the island. “We have been working with our international partners in this and have found criminal traces for four of the seven so far and only a couple of weeks before that, we know that another person who is wanted in Jamaica tried to enter the United States in a similar way but was found and sent back to us,” Anderson said. He said that local law enforcement authorities are now

Broward County and U.S. Border Patrol authorities detained 14 migrants, including Jamaicans, who were traveling in a boat that came ashore. WPLG-TV reported the migrants were coming from Jamaica and had first traveled to The Bahamas. One of the migrant men, later identified as Deon Cooke, told the TV station as he was being handcuffed in Pompano Beach, Florida, that he was fleeing from violence in his home country. “There's killing going on there. We want a better life. No life is in Jamaica right now,” he said. Cooke, popularly known as 'Boobie Skeng,' is reported to be one of the top gangsters in the east Kingston community of Dunkirk.

Michelle Drummond Jamaican Artist the First Black Woman Awarded Solo Art Commission by City of West Palm Beach
By Sheri-kae McLeod CNW Reporter
Jamaican-born artist Michelle Drummond has become the first Black woman to be awarded a solo art commission that will be permanently installed in the City of West Palm Beach through its Artlife WPB program. ArtLife WPB is the city's premier art program that commissions and presents a variety of projects created by artists at all career levels. The program mandates that funds totaling 1% of public and private development projects throughout the City be set aside for the inclusion of art. At a recent Commissioner's meeting on June 14, the city gave approval for the artwork entitled “The Metamorphosis” by Drummond to be installed at the Mandel Public Library in West Palm Beach, making her the first Black female artist to receive a solo art commission for permanent installation since the program began. The artwork, which Drummond says is inspired by the philosophy that knowledge and transformation align and empower change and rebirth, honors the City's Mandel Public Library as a resource for all with the goal of advancing society. It will be placed in the Urban Living Room of the library. In congratulating Drummond on her historic milestone, Sybille Welter, Administrator of Public Art and Culture for the City of West Palm Beach, said “we are thrilled to have an artist whose work reflects the cultural diversity of the city. Drummond pushes the field of textile arts by creating works on a canvas with a threedimensional viewpoint; brightly colored she produces objects of contemplation.” Michelle Drummond is a mixed media fiber artist. Her practice involves using multi-colored, multi-
weighted fiber (yarn), glue and acrylic paint on and off canvas. Drummond has been living in the United States for 26 years and has been creating art for 23 of those years. Her work has been featured in 20 exhibitions across South Florida in the last three years, including at the Cornell Art Museum, Art Palm Beach and Art Basel in Miami. Drummond said that she is honored to be the first Black female artist to be awarded this commission. “My hopes of finding the audience that would truly appreciate the uniqueness and beauty of my artwork came to fruition. It is an honor, especially being the first Black female artist and also of Jamaican heritage to be awarded this permanent solo public art commission by the City of West Palm Beach ArtLife WPB program,” she told CNW Network. “This opportunity will not only provide me the platform to expose my work to a broader audience but will allow me to have a positive emotional and mental effect on the residents and patrons in the West Palm Beach community through my artwork.” Drummond says the project has a six to nine-month timeline.

Caribbean Airlines Terminates 25 Percent of Workforce
Prominent Calypso Lyricist Winsford “Joker” Devine Dies
Caribbean Airlines (CAL) on Monday announced a loss of TT$172.7 million as well as a 75 percent decline in revenue, compared to the same period in 2020.
Culture and Arts Minister, Randall Mitchell, has paid tribute to the prolific calypso writer, Winsford “Joker” Devine, who died earlier on Tuesday, June 22. He was 77 years old. Devine, who was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Letters from the University of West Indies, St. Augustine, in 2017, had penned more than 500 songs for singers including the r e n o w n e d Devine calypsonians Singer Francisco, the Mighty Sparrow, Black Stalin, Sugar Aloes, Baron, Crazy and Machel Montano. The Trinidad and Tobago Unified Calypsonians Organisation (TUCO) described his tune ”Progress” which had been sung by the late King Austin as the song of the last millennium. In a statement, Mitchell said his contribution exemplified his commitment to Trinidad and Tobago's culture through calypso. “His iconic contribution has advanced calypso over the past decades. Many of his songs will continue to inspire and uplift us today and in the future,” Mitchell said of the self-taught musician, who learned the basics of his craft by playing the steelpan. Devine also wrote the memorable Steelband Music Festival Test Piece titled, “Fire and Steel.” Devine was the recipient of The Hummingbird Medal (Silver) for Music and the Arts. He was also awarded an Honorary Distinguished Fellow, The Arts from the University of Trinidad and Tobago in 2016.
In a statement, the airline said that the figures represented its unaudited financial results for the first quarter of 2021. It has also announced a significant reduction in its workforce with at least 450 jobs being lost. Caribbean Airlines said that the losses follow a similar downturn in 2020, which saw an operating loss of TT$738 million compared to operating profits for 2018 and 2019. Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic and the suspension of operations at its base in Trinidad and Tobago, the airline has seen passenger numbers plummet, and flight numbers reduced to less than 10 percent of normal operations. Despite this, the airline said it has continued to offer services on many of its routes and provided invaluable repatriation flights for Caribbean citizens. The airline said that the recent announcement by Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley that the borders of Trinidad and Tobago may soon reopen “is welcome news, but all forecasts suggest that the recommencement of Garvin Medera, Caribbean Airlines CEO

Should Children Over 12 be Required to take the COVID-19 Vaccine before returning to school?
Almost every state in the United States requires children to be vaccinated to attend school, with inoculations for mumps, measles and rubella, as well as polio and diphtheria among the most common diseases. With COVID-19 and its various mutations still posing a public health threat, many education officials and public-health officials believe that vaccinating children against Covid-19 will play a key role in resuming full in-person learning in the fall. Children as young as 12 years old are now eligible to receive the Covid-19 vaccine from Pfizer and Moderna. But the issue of mandating children to take the vaccine is controversial, seeing that many adults are still hesitant to take the shot. We asked South Florida residents if children over 12 years should be required to get the COVID-19 vaccine before they return to school. Here are the responses:
Ludnie Joseph I say no, it should be up to the parents discretion. Especially if the child takes meds and has a medical condition. That's just my opinion since I haven't taken it yet but my doctors want me to, I'm a heart transplant recipient so they're advising I get vaccinated. You can also look for us in Jamaica
Anthony Taylor Yes, I think so because children that age and older are able to contract and spread the disease like adults. In essence, they are mini adults and are at risk for becoming ill from the disease and infecting older adults.
Jazz Maxide I feel as though getting vaccinated lessens the intensity if you were to contract the virus which ultimately would be beneficial for the kids especially if they were to return for in person instruction next school year.
Dominique Dawson No. It hasn't been proven to be effective with just one shot; like polio, it required boosters, like a flu shot. Therefore, flu shots should be required if they're making COVID require.
Qualey Smiley I don't really have an opinion on it. I feel like parents should use their own discretion on whether their kids should get it or not.
Stephanie Henry No, it shouldn't be a requirement. Parents should have the power to make that decision.

Pay for Play: The Debate Continues The US Supreme Court on Monday sent a clear message to the National College Athletics Association (NCAA) that is sure to shape the proverbial debate surrounding amateurism going forward. With a 9-0 unanimous decision the court ruled the NCAA cannot impose caps on education-related benefits schools provide to their athletes because such limits violate antitrust law. It is the general feeling that the NCAA and colleges benefit more from the work and likenesses of the athletes than the athletes themselves. The millions generated from college sports is believed to benefit the well-paid NCAA executives, coaches, and staff while the athletes are not paid. This has been a point of contention that in an industry that generates so much revenue; the main driver of the revenue is not proportionately sharing in the spoils. Students with academic scholarships are allowed to accept gifts and earn money meanwhile college athletes who are risking future careers and earning potential to play for colleges, are not. College can be physically gruesome being a student athlete trying to keep up academically while navigating practices, games, and all that goes into being successful athletically. So, it is hard to watch colleges reap billions from these student athletes' sacrifices and success but, in the same breath, block them from earning a dollar. The NCAA also requires players to have health insurance and does not obligate colleges to pay for their coverage. They can also refuse to pay medical expenses for sports injuries, some of which can have life-long consequences for the students and their career opportunities. Schools are also not prohibited from canceling injured athletes' scholarships, making them vulnerable to leaving school without a sport or education career path. It is important to keep in mind that majority of college athletes will never make it to the pros. Baseball which carries the highest percentage of

transition to professional sports is hobbling around ten percent, while football and basketball is averaging less than two percent. Justice Brett Kavanaugh's one of the nine unanimous votes, said the “NCAA's remaining compensation rules also raise serious questions under the antitrust laws.” He went on to opine that “The bottom line is that the NCAA and its member colleges are suppressing the pay of student athletes who collectively generate billions of dollars in revenues for colleges every year. Those enormous sums of money flow to seemingly everyone except the student athletes,” he wrote. Reading the tea leaves many pundits thinks that the door is now ajar for college athletes to
eventually start getting pay to play; coupling this decision with the Name Image and Likeness (NIL) that the NCAA reluctantly committed to introduce by July 1st. It was September 30, 2019, California passed law introduced by Sen. Nancy Skinner that will, starting in 2023, prohibit schools from punishing athletes who accept endorsement money while in college. After referring to the bill as an "existential threat", on October 29, 2019, the association directed all three NCAA divisions to make rules that allow athletes to make endorsement money while maintaining "the collegiate model. Its baby steps like these that leads some to believe it is only a matter of time before there is some form of pay for play,

Haitian Nationals Attacked in Honduras The authorities in the Central American nation of Honduras are investigating the circumstances that led to a group of Haitians being attacked. According to the police, in recent years, Honduras has become a key passage for migrants, who seek to enter the United States illegally and last week, a group of 14 Haitians including six minors were attacked while they were staying in a house in the municipality of El Triunfo, located on the border with Nicaragua. “It was an inhuman situation, because these individuals, in addition to inflicting cruel and inhuman treatment on them, raped 4 women including a 14-year-old minor, and the children suffered emotional and psychological trauma because of what happened,” said Elba Reyes who heads the Southern Regional Office of the Directorate of Children, Adolescents and the Family (DINAF).
A group of 14 Haitians including six minors were aacked while they were staying in a house in the municipality of El Triunfo, located on the border with Nicaragua.
Reyes also disclosed that he coordinated the transfer of Haitians to the Southern General Hospital, where they received medical assistance and underwent tests for COVID-19. He added that DINAF provided the migrants with accommodation in conditions of dignity and security, with the support of the National Commissioner for Human Rights of the Norwegian Refugee Council. DINAF then contacted the police and supplied information to assist them in finding the individuals guilty of these crimes to hand them over to justice to be tried and sentenced. Elba Reyes has called on all migrants who are tempted to cross Honduras, not to take an illegal migration route strewn with danger, for their safety and to “avoid falling into the hands of unscrupulous smugglers or gangs of bandits hostile to the on the lookout for defenseless migrants.”
Haiti the Only CARICOM Nation to Benefit Directly from US Vaccine Donation Haiti is the only Caribbean Community (CARICOM) country expected to benefit directly from a U.S. donation of 14 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine to Latin America and the Caribbean. Up to now, Haiti still hasn't received a single dose of vaccine. On Monday, the White House announced the final allocations for the doses President Joe Biden promised to donate last month. Some 60 million shots will go to the global COVAX vaccine sharing alliance and 20 million being directed to specific partners. COVAX is the vaccines pillar of the Access to COVID-19 Tools (ACT) Accelerator, which a ground-breaking global collaboration to accelerate the development, production, and equitable access to COVID19 tests, treatments, and vaccines. COVAX is co-led by Gavi, the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) and the World Health Organization (WHO). Its aim is to accelerate the development and manufacture of COVID-19 vaccines, and to guarantee fair and equitable access for every country in the world. Washington revealed plans for 55 million more shots. It said through COVAX, the latest batch of doses will include about 14 million for Latin America and the Caribbean, approximately 16 million for Asia and about 10 million for Africa. About 14 million doses will be shared directly with Colombia, Argentina, Haiti, Dominican Republic, Costa Rica, Panama, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia, South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, Cabo Verde, Egypt, Jordan, Iraq, Yemen, Tunisia, Oman, West Bank and Gaza, Ukraine, Kosovo, Georgia, Moldova and Bosnia. On Monday, it was disclosed that Washington's plans to ship 80 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccines by the end of this month would fall short because of regulatory and other hurdles. Reports indicate that fewer than 10 million doses have been shipped around the world, and US officials said that while the US-produced doses are ready, deliveries have been delayed due to US and recipient legal, logistical and regulatory requirements. A White House official said shipments will go out as soon as countries are ready to receive the doses and the administration sorts out logistical complexities. The excess doses are not needed in the US, where on May 17, President Joe Biden announced that “over the next six weeks, the United States of America will send 80 million doses overseas. - (CMC)

Kodak Black Proclamation Forces A Change in Broward County Rules Popular Haitian-American rapper and Pompano Beach native, Kodak Black was recently recognized by Commissioner Dale Holness for his philanthropic efforts in Broward County. The controversial rapper received a proclamation from Holness during a charity basketball game on June 11, but the move did not go over well with some members of the Commission. At a Commissioner's meeting on June 15, members raised the issue of not being included in the decision to give Kodak Black a proclamation. Senator Nan Rich said Commissioners shouldn't be allowed to issue
proclamations to whoever they want. “I think that if we were to allow individual commissioners to present proclamations to anybody, to whom they desired, “I think that it really diminishes the impact and the importance of the proclamation,” she said. Commissioner Dale Holness said he attempted the get approval from some Commissioners and the Mayor, but they were unavailable. Since the start of his career, Kodak Black has had several run-ins with the law, including his most recent gun and sexual assault charges. But Holness said the proclamation was a way to shine a spotlight on some of the good that he has done for Broward residents. “I believe in redemption,” Holness said. “I believe every human being has the ability to
redeem themselves from whatever wrong they've done. It (the proclamation) wasn't about naming a day for him either, if anyone took the time to read it.” He listed a host of good works including, “helping fallen officers in giving assistance to them. $100,000 for the Nova Southeastern library, contributing to honor MSD high school senior Meadow Pollack and the 16 others who tragically lost their lives.” The meeting ended with a change in rules. Going forward, Commissioners cannot use the word proclamation or assign “a day” without approval through the mayor's office three business days in advance. Kodak Black

Florida to Require High Schoolers to Receive CPR Training High school students in Florida will soon be learning a new life-saving skill at school. Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a bill requiring all school districts to provide basic training in first aid, including CPR instruction. The bill (HB 157) passed the House and Senate in unanimous votes during the legislative session that ended April 30. Under the measure, school districts will be required to provide one hour of “basic training in first aid to all students in the ninth and eleventh grades.” School districts also will be “encouraged” to begin giving basic first-aid and CPR training to students in grades 6 and 8. According to the bill summary, the CPR training must be based on a “one-hour nationally recognized program that uses the most current evidence-based emergency cardiovascular care guidelines.” The law officially goes into effect on July 1.

Shaggy to Headline Florida Jerk Festival in Palm Beach Jamaica's Grammy award-winning, diamondselling artist Shaggy will headline the Florida Jerk Festival, which is set to take place on Sunday, July 4th, 2021 at the South Florida Fairgrounds, located at 9067 Southern Boulevard in West Palm Beach, FL. Other amazing performance acts that will grace the main stage during this event include soca recording artist Skinny Fabulous and reggae recording artists LUST. “During the festival's one-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we at Full-A-Vybez Entertainment took the time to revamp the overall Jerk Festival brand,” says Damian Tater, CEO of the Florida Jerk Festival. “Now it's 2021, “We are back,” bigger and better than ever. We are excited to bring Shaggy on board as the event headliner. His star power is exactly what our festival needs to generate the buzz of our rebranding. Adding Skinny Fabulous and LUST to the event will generate even more excitement at Festival. We know this year's entertainment experience will be a fun-filled one.” The organizers say that Shaggy has provided the blueprint for global dancehall success and continues to innovate at the forefront of the island sounds that top the worldwide pop charts. To date, Shaggy has sold over 30 million albums, racking up no fewer than eight singles on the Billboard Top 100 chart. His latest hit, “Go Down Deh” – an iconic collaboration with Sean Paul and the Queen of Dancehall, Spice – is dominating reggae music charts around the globe while the correlating music video has amassed 11M YouTube views to date. Earlier this year, the Palm Beach and Orlando Jerk Festival, two of Florida's premier foodie events, completed an extensive rebranding effort that changed the structure of each festival, and modifying the new name to the Florida Jerk Festival. As safety is the top priority of the festival's organizers, CDC safety guidelines will be followed. Also, there will be over 100 sanitation stations placed throughout the event venue.

The album will be executive-produced by international Dancehall superstar Shaggy and will be distributed by VP Records and should be out July 30. travel will not be in the same volumes as they were pre-COVID.” The airline said that as a consequence, it is required to take further steps to ensure it has a sustainable business model for 2021 and beyond. It said these steps include major cost reductions in all areas of the airline's operations, specifically its human resource complement, its fleet and other assets, and its route network. “As part of the streamlining strategy, the number of jets in the fleet will be reduced, for the time being, over the course of 2021. Its route network will also be adjusted to reflect the changing market. In terms of employees, the airline has determined that 25 percent of its workforce or about 450 positions throughout its network is surplus to its current needs. “The Company will embark on consultation with the employees and other stakeholders, with respect to treating with this surplus labour situation,” the airline said in the statement. Last week, Finance Minister Colm Imbert said that the government is hoping that the airline would return in a much more “efficient shape and form.”

represented Jamaica at the 2004 Athens Olympics, winning gold in the 200m, ahead of the favorite, American Allyson Felix. Her win made her the first Jamaican and Caribbean woman in the history of the Olympic games to win a sprint Olympic title. Campbell-Brown then teamed up with Aleen Bailey, Tayna Lawrence, and Sherone Simpson in the finals of the 4 × 100 m. VCB ran a scintillating anchor leg as Jamaica went on to win the women's 4 × 100 m. Jamaica created history as it was the first time Jamaica had won the 4 × 100 m relay at the Olympics. She repeated her 2004 win in 2008, again relegating Felix to silver. Veronica Campbell-Brown also excelled at 100m, winning a world title in 2007 and Olympic bronze medals in 2004 and 2012. In 2019, she was honored with a statue in a park outside the National Stadium in Kingston, along with other champions from her era — Usain Bolt, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Asafa Powell. Campbell-Brown came from the same parish as Bolt and the same high school as another legendary Jamaican female sprinter, Merlene Ottey. The Olympian said she will now turn her focus to parenting, and her entrepreneurial and charity ventures including the VCB Foundation.

Drysdale-Daley strikes rst for Jamaica with historic Olympic judo qualication CNW Sports
Ebony Drysdale-Daley made another historic strike for Jamaica in judo, when she became the country's first-ever competitor in the sport to qualify for the Olympic Games. The 26-year-old Drysdale-Daley will mark the history-making occasion when she takes the floor for competition in the female 70kg category on July 28, 2021 in Tokyo, Japan. Drysdale-Daley's qualification for Tokyo was confirmed on Tuesday when Szandra Sdogedi, Secretary General of the Jamaica Judo Association, informed the Jamaica Olympic Association (JOA), the apex body for sport locally, saying “I am happy to inform you that Ebony Drysdale-Daley has made history for Jamaica and has qualified for the Olympic Games”. Reacting to the news, the JOA said it was a proud and fulfilling moment, given the confidence expressed through their unwavering support for the sport and its athletes. Christopher Samuda, President of the JOA which launched a campaign to have Jamaica represented in diversified disciplines in Tokyo, said: "Ebony's triumph is a personal victory of courage, commitment, inspiration and faith and a nation's pride, which the JOA embraces and is grateful to the Judo Federation's President, Dwayne Barrett, and Secretary General, Szandra Szogedi, who inspire excellence in athletes and coaches. “As the sun rises in Japan, so will Ebony's

prospects in Tokyo and I will watch with conviction that history is in the making,” added Samuda. Ryan Foster, Secretary General and CEO of the JOA, said it is a “marvelous feat”. “I am pleased with the qualification of Ebony for the Tokyo Olympic Games in the sport of judo,” said Foster. “We started a journey with the Jamaican Judo Association in 2018 when they were admitted as a member of the JOA for the first time. We bought into President Barrett (Dwayne) and Secretary General Szandra's (Szogedi) vision for the sport and we stood by them from the start to ensure that their goals at all times aligned to the JOA. The JOA funded
their Olympic campaign and the development of the sport in Jamaica and we now see the results of believing in our members' dreams.” “The JOA will continue to invest and spend on our athletes and to bring dreams to reality whichever discipline you belong, whether traditional or non-traditional sports,” Foster affirmed. Drysdale-Daley, who is based in Britain, first marked her name in Jamaica's history books of judo two years ago when she won gold at the Commonwealth Games Judo Championships, which was staged in Birmingham, United Kingdom. Szogedi expressed “huge thanks” to the JOA for its commitment.
