“The River That Flows in Two Directions by Rachel Baxter @rachelabaxter

What inspired your mural?

I was definitely inspired by the proximity to the Hudson River. I wanted the mural to have a sense of place and bring attention to the wonderful riverfront that we have here in Albany. I really wanted it to have a sense of movement, beauty and reference the geographical location that it inhabits. We all see the finished product, but how much planning goes into a mural? An immense amount of planning goes into it. I think the conversation started at least a year before the actual painting of the mural happened. There are a lot of meetings, a lot of paperwork, many conversations about the potential for the mural, and that all happens before and during the design and editing phase. Then, after all that, you get to start planning how to physically take this digital mockup, or hand drawing, and make it come to life. And that’s when the true adventure A L BA N Y.O R G

begins‌ There are so many moving parts and it requires so much help from so many different people, and it is so worth it. These murals are transforming our city and bringing people together in really wonderful ways. Why did you get involved with the #CapitalWalls project and what have you gotten out of it? I first got involved after having a conversation with Tony Iadicicco about the need for more public art in Albany. He and the other partners of #CapitalWalls (Albany Barn and Albany Parking Authority) were excited about the possibilities and the potential it held for the region. I was fortunate enough to be given the opportunity to create my very first mural because of this project and have done a handful more since then. I have met so many incredible people because of this opportunity and have been able to see this city grow and change and learn about new artists living in the area. lbany has strong craft beverage roots, as the city was once the center of the North American brewing scene. Recently, Albany County has experienced a craft beverage renaissance with the opening of many cideries, breweries, wineries and distilleries. Each of these producers has its own fascinating and unique story to tell. A few of them creatively express parts of their story through murals painted inside and outside their tasting rooms.

under the shadow of a huge rose mural painted 20 years ago by the father of Alejandro del Peral, Nine Pin’s founder. The tasting room’s patio is adorned with a “Cider Monster mural that was a spur-of-the-moment creation by graphic artist Colin Byrne. This graffiti-style mural inspired Nine Pin’s popular Cider Monster small-batch cider produced each year.

Visitors heading to the brewery’s Warehouse District taproom can’t miss the massive mural depicting the historic Fort Orange Trading Post. This brewery truly captures the spirit of Albany!

How do you incorporate art into your food and/ or menu? “The cliche is true, ‘everyone eats with their eyes first.’ Although there is a lot of thought that goes into the profile of a dish, there also is in the way we present it. We like to ‘paint’ our plates so that the dish is pleasing to the eye. - Dimitrios Menagias, Head Chef, City Beer Hall

“I use art in many ways. In my food, I try to stimulate all the senses the way any other artist does. I also look to artists for my style of presentation. I love Chagall’s use of space and color, Kandinsky’s juxtaposition of objects and colors and even Escher’s graduation of patterns. - Ric Orlando, Executive Chef and Owner, New World Bistro Bar

How do you use your creativity as a chef to create your seasonal menus? “Life initiates art. Cooking the bounties of each season gives me a way to realize that energy. - John LaPosta, Head Chef and Owner, Innovo Kitchen “Creating a seasonal menu is always a fun oppor tunit y to find new and different ways to use the bounty of the Hudson Valley and upstate New York. Working with local products in season lets us express what we love most about this region by creating new flavors and experiences from what is produced right next door. - Ian O’Leary, Head Chef, Albany Pump Station “With Maggie McFly’s seasonal menu, I tend to draw inspiration from many sources, whether it be food trends or items that I see or try. I find ways to incorporate all these aspects into the food “art that our kitchens are creating. What inspired your mural? My mural is about beauty that comes along with a diverse culture. It’s celebrating otherness, sharing my diverse experiences as a citizen of both the East and the West. This piece depicts a paper boat and symbolizes the beauty and bravery of an immigrant’s journey.

We all see the finished product, but how much planning goes into a mural?

In the case of #CapitalWalls, a huge chunk of planning was done by the curator and partners, from selecting the artists, finding partners, finding the right area and equipment, working out the insurance for the artist, supporting the artist while at work...so it’s rather a lengthy process. On the artist side, after the design is selected, planning the execution of details a week or two before the start. Why did you get involved with the #CapitalWalls project and what have you gotten out of it? I wanted to say something as a woman, artist and an immigrant, and I wanted to be a part of making Albany more artful, beautiful and inclusive. I feel more connected and part of a city I call home.

Inside the Albany Capital Center, visitors are greeted with beautiful murals that chart Albany’s growth from a small riverside settlement to a booming state capital. Spanning 400 years, the area’s history is filled with people, places and stories that matter. Artist Dahl Taylor has captured the energy and beauty of the region with these sweeping murals created to inspire and educate visitors about the many assets and history of Albany County. The Bull Moose Club was designed to create a hospitality-driven environment t h a t wo u l d m a ke m e m b e r s fe e l comfortable and excited to work in the space. While the coworking spot has one of the best views in Albany, directly overlooking the Capitol building, the team wanted to provide an inspiring, energizing and interactive atmosphere inside the space, too. This vibe was achieved by transforming otherwise blank walls with art that provokes thought and conversation. As a coworking space, interaction among people with different backgrounds, skillsets and industries is constant. Providing the creative space to not

In recognition of the importance of the arts, and the emergence of New York as the home of many of America’s most innovative and talented artists, Governor Nelson A. The collection was selected by a commission appointed by Governor Rockefeller and helped set a precedent by incorporating complementary art into the design of the Empire State Plaza’s public buildings and spaces. Schuyler Mansion State Historic Site is a Georgian-style mansion that was the home of Revolutionary War Major General Philip Schuyler and his family. Numerous projects to restore the elegant mansion have occurred, including the “Ruins of Rome wallpaper. Through Philip Schuyler’s 1761 travel receipts, we know this 18th-century hand-painted English wallpaper once embellished the mansion’s halls. After a detailed process, there are now stunning reproductions of the “Ruins of Rome adorning the downstairs entry hall and upstairs saloon. eople have been bridging the gap between art and science since early humans began painting the natural world on cave walls. It is how we make sense of and interact with complex ideas. STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Math) has become a popular focus in childhood learning. Recently an “A has been added to the acronym to represent art. Area science and technology museums have embraced art and integrated it into their programming. Art can also be found in the unique natural landscapes throughout Albany County — nature is the ultimate muse.

“Illuminated by Cara Hanley @caramhanley

What inspired your mural? When I was invited to participate in the #CapitalWalls project, I knew I wanted to take the opportunity to pay homage to the city that I call home, Albany. The truth is that I am really in love with our quirky little city. I have lived here most of my life and yet when I walk around, I continue to find details, like the intricate cornices of buildings or the greenery popping up through the sidewalk, that I hadn’t noticed before. My goal for the mural “Illuminated was to inspire a sense of wonder related to our city. I believe that nighttime inspires introspection and curiosity, so the night scene in my mural is aimed to relate a sense of dreaminess.

#Cap alWalls

We all see the finished product, but how much planning goes into a mural? Planning a mural can be a long process. For my mural “Illuminated, I started sketches months before, while I was on an artist residency in Venice, Italy. This was actually great timing because I was experiencing some homesickness and brainstorming was a great way of tying me back to home. The sketch process is a back and forth between the artist, art director and funders to make sure that everyone is in support of the final work. This is both challenging and rewarding. When creating a work of public art, it is important that the community is considered with sensitivity. Why did you get involved with the #CapitalWalls project and what have you got ten out of it? When I was approached about the #CapitalWalls project, I experienced a mixture of excitement and terror. I lunged at

the opportunity to create something for the community that I hold dear to my heart, but I was also nervous about creating such a large-scale piece. My primary medium is watercolor and I tend to work on a small scale. However, I knew I could not pass up this opportunity. Tony from Albany Center Gallery and partners Albany Barn and Albany Parking Authority provided me a lot of encouragement and friends and family were also a huge support for me during this time. I pushed myself out of my comfort zone by taking on this project and I grew from the experience. Creating a mural was a truly magical experience and I have since had several opportunities to create wall and window murals for local businesses. Working large-scale is such a physical experience and a huge contrast to my usual process. The variety keeps me inspired and thinking more flexibly.

City scenes aren’t the only spaces being brightened up with art! Art created in rural areas adds beauty to the landscape. In late 2016, a group of Bethlehem residents, inspired by the idea of creating public works of art along the Albany County Helderberg-Hudson Rail Trail, joined forces with the Mohawk Hudson Land Conservancy to form Art on the Rail Trail (ART). Since then, ART’s efforts have been instrumental in beautifying the area during all seasons and increasing the sense of community ownership of the trail. Currently, there are five murals along the Rail Trail and the committee hosts a community art festival, “Chalk the Walk (right), each September.

The Iroquois Museum (Howes Cave, NY) opens “Identity/Identify, a thought-provoking new exhibit on April 2, 2020. The exhibit explores who is considered Iroquois and how these definitions and designations determine access to tribal and federal resources, rights, residency options and other components of cultural and community participation. Artistic responses created specifically for the exhibit from Iroquois country will present the political and polarizing issues surrounding blood quantum standards, the position and challenges of mixed race individuals, those who grew up off reservation and other issues of identity.

“Mix Tape by Hellbent @hellbent_

What inspired your mural? A lot of the elements within the mural were inspired by Albany and its history. For example, the blue-on-blue floral pattern is a nod to Dutch porcelain and there is a color way that is a reference to New York’s state flag. While I was painting, I really enjoyed walking around and checking out the architecture of the city. There are some great Art Deco buildings downtown and one of my patterns is a deco design.

#Cap alWalls

We all see the finished product, but how much planning goes into a mural? A lot of planning goes into the execution of a mural, especially one of the size I did in Albany. Doing a seven-story building — you can’t just wing it, you’ve got to have a plan. But always, things pop up and you have to adapt on the fly. You figure out the paint and stuff, but for my work the scale is key. I want the patterns to be in proportion to the size of building I’m working on. Why did you get involved with the #CapitalWalls project and what have you gotten out of it? Well, Tony at Albany Center Gallery had asked me, as he had seen my work before and as he explained the project, it sounded good. And as I got into town and Tony drove me around and showed me some murals in town and upcoming projects that were coming, I was really glad to be involved. I always think the best thing of painting in other towns is the people you meet along the way. We got a ton of encouragement and positive vibes from the city as we were painting and that means a lot. People being excited about what you are doing is great. A L BA N Y.O R G

“Geraldine’s Reverie by Liz Zunon @lizzunon

What inspired your mural?

The arts and entertainment inspired my mural; especially the freedom of expression that we have as young children when we play, dance, sing, make up stories and explore the world. That is the freedom I seek, as an adult artist, every time I create. We all see the finished product, but how much planning goes into a mural? There was a lot of planning before actually putting paint on the mural. After taking photographs of the blank wall space, I created a couple of pencil sketches using characters from my sketchbooks and additional musical, dance and theater elements inspired by my conversations with Tony at Albany Center Gallery and research about the performances at our local theaters. This research also inspired my color palette, leading me to paint a watercolor study and a computer mock-up of my vision for the mural. After my color studies were A L BA N Y.O R G

approved, it was time to buy the paint! Then came transferring my pencil sketches onto the mural, projecting them onto the wall at night and outlining the figures and shapes in black paint. Finally came the best part: opening paint cans and making the mural come to life! Why did you get involved with the #CapitalWalls project and what have you gotten out of it? I got involved with the #CapitalWalls project because I was looking for an artistic challenge (this was my first mural), because I believe in the power of public art and because I felt that my experience as a children’s book illustrator could contribute to this vision of more public art in the urban spaces of Albany. Through painting “Geraldine’s Reverie,â€? I’ve been able to create “liveâ€? art in my own community and open up conversations with others about the power of the arts and the freedom of childhood. It’s also made me view myself as a member of a local artistic community in the Capital Region. D I S C OV E R A L BA N Y V I S I TO R S G U I D E 2 0 2 0 ď Ž 2 9
