Irish Erie Canal workers and immigrants settled “Tipp Hill” where cultural pride led to the world’s only upside-down “Greenon-Top” traffic light. The neighborhood features scenic parks, architecturally striking churches and, of course, the popular pubs, including Coleman’s, which sports a tiny leprechaun door to the right of the entrance.
Discover Downtown Syracuse in a unique and delicious way! This three-hour walking tour includes stops at award-winning restaurants where participants sample local fare and learn about the people and places behind the dishes. Guides will also share some fun facts about Downtown Syracuse’s history, architecture and culture.
Rides, games of chance, free concerts and a celebration of culture and agriculture – the New York State Fair has it all! The number one reason people come to the Fair: the food. Vendors, a food truck competition and Taste NY highlight the best products made and grown in New York. The Fair hosts special promotions each day and on opening day and Labor Day, admission is just $1!
Shopping, dining and entertainment so big, it needed its own zip code! Immerse yourself in more than 240 retail options, luxury dining, live music and more. Enjoy an exclusive Savings Program with your AAA/CAA cards; show your card at one of two convenient guest services locations to receive hundreds of dollars in deals. Don’t forget to ask about the Fun Day pass.
Considered one of the top zoos and aquariums in the nation, the Rosamond Gifford Zoo is home to more than 700 animals. The zoo is an accredited member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), meaning it must abide by the highest standards in animal care, education and visitor experience.

“I’m from New York - no, not the city.” ...and I wouldn’t have it any other way – Danielle Benjamin wanderlust-onabudget.com It first started when I lived in Australia; people would ask me where I was from and immediately assumed I meant New York City. For years, I’ve been correcting people that no, I don’t live in Manhattan, I live in Syracuse — smack dab in the center of New York State. Yes, there’s a whole state outside of New York City! And it’s amazing. I’ve traveled around the world to major cities and small towns, but I’m always happy to come back home to Syracuse. Why? It’s the perfect combination of city and country. You can spend a Saturday morning walking around Armory Square drinking coffee and shopping local, then spend your afternoon visiting a farm or chasing waterfalls and return downtown again for live music or theater. No, we don’t have the glamorous marquees of Broadway, but we have Syracuse Stage, Redhouse Arts Center, and the historic Landmark Theatre. Standing inside the Landmark is always a breathtaking experience. The century-old architecture and decor is incredible to admire. Plus, legend says it’s haunted! I live for summer weekends in Syracuse. There’s nothing better than a warm, bright Saturday morning, enjoying a latte and a chocolate croissant from Freedom of Espresso while watching the water flow through the fountain in Franklin Square. Once the caffeine kicks in, it’s time to visit the Farmer’s Market. I always start in Building A — the one closest to Park Street and Destiny USA. It’s bustling with activity — the sights, sounds and smells fill the air. I never go to the market knowing what I’ll end up taking home. Sometimes it’s the local honey or maple syrup, a bushel of vegetables, fresh herbs for the garden, or hanging flower baskets. The Amish merchants have the best pastries. The fresh bread from the bakery outside is incredible. I can’t leave the market without getting a loaf of cinnamon bread or some rolls for dinner.
The afternoon calls for a city break. My favorite spot is unquestionably Green Lakes. A stunning place to be year-round, the turquoise color of the lakes is like no place else. The best part? The dogs love it just as much as I do. I’ll even let you in on a secret — my absolute favorite place to escape in Central New York is on the bench at the first curve in the path around the main lake. Sitting there is the most peaceful and relaxing place to be. Not to mention beautiful!
Walking around the market never fails to make me hungry, so it’s time for lunch. One of my favorite things about Syracuse culture is the food scene. With so many great places to grab a bite, it’s often hard to narrow down a spot. I can’t wait for friends from other cities to visit so I can take them out to eat and show off our local cuisine. Want a bowl of Japanese ramen, Italian pasta, or Polish pierogis? Syracuse has it all! Even waffles topped with turkey and gravy just like it’s Thanksgiving at Funk ‘N Waffles, which was featured on The Food Network! A walk around downtown is the perfect midday activity. My favorite thing to do while wandering the city streets? Check out all the street art! It looks like there’s always a new mural to see — and Syracuse has even started to embrace the interactive ‘Instagram-worthy’ spots, like the new umbrella by Ally Walker on the side of XO Taco. On a recent visit there, I ran into a guy from Tampa who had returned home to Syracuse for the holidays. We were both on a mission to photograph new street art, and it led to a colorful conversation about the resurgence of Syracuse’s art scene.

If you’re into live music, there are several bars and restaurants with local bands playing. You can never go wrong with barbecue, cold beer and a rock band at Dinosaur Bar-B-Que. On a warm summer night, the Boneyard outside is always hopping. For a quieter vibe with the southern charm of Joanna Gaines, Oh My Darling is the best new eatery in Syracuse — and right in the heart of downtown. When you visit, I recommend the lemon ricotta pancakes for breakfast and the hot honey fried chicken for dinner. Plus, they’ve recently opened a speakeasy downstairs featuring cocktails for the late-night crowd. Syracuse is no stranger to the booming craft beer industry. Several breweries have popped up around the city in the past few years. From wits to stouts and everything in between, there’s something for everyone. My husband and I regularly visit friends in Baltimore and Boston, and every time we go we are able to bring new local brews to share. Each brewery has something unique to offer. Willow Rock has become a favorite for watching sports while playing cornhole and foosball, Middle Ages has an incredible new taproom with a fireplace and flavored popcorn, and Full Boar is more chill — the type of place where the owners make you feel like family. Most of the local breweries have rotating food trucks on site, so you won’t go hungry while you’re drinking.

Explore Local Neighborhoods The Syracuse area is filled with unique and vastly different neighborhoods. From streets full of history and traditions to those with a more eclectic vibe, a visit to the area should include a stop to at least a few of these distinct areas. We’ve gathered some of our favorites to start off your first of many weekend discoveries. SCENE Just a few blocks from the popular Armory and Clinton Square sections of downtown, Hanover Square offers a variety of nightlife options. Maxwell’s and The Evergreen are two popular area pubs. Grab a bite to eat and enjoy nightly options including open mic nights, trivia and burger specials or just order a beer and enjoy the warm weather on their outdoor patios. This July the neighborhood will also offer Hanover Thursdays, an outdoor music series featuring the best in local and regional talent.
DRINK Grab a pint in the city’s historic Tipperary Hill neighborhood. The area boasts the world’s only upside-down traffic light and a bevy of Irish pubs. Check out Coleman’s Authentic Irish Pub and Restaurant or Blarney Stone for a classic Irish hang-out or enjoy a craft brew at the newer Now & Later.
SHOP Take a stroll around Armory Square and the surrounding streets for some local shopping. Stop into boutiques such as Midnight Sun or Frankie and Faye for some fab fashion finds or browse the records at The Sound Garden. The guys can peruse American Reserve Clothing, (at left is their The Caféracer Jacket) or grab some kicks at Ambition Upstate. Stop into Sweet on Chocolate or Kathy’s Cookie Kitchen for a quick snack and then stroll on over to Clinton Square.
EAT Spend some time in the Little Italy and Northside neighborhoods for a wide variety of tasty options. A historically Italian neighborhood, locals love the pastries and especially cannolis from Biscotti Cafe, while Columbus Bakery and DiLauros Bakery & Pizza are two of the top rated bakeries for bread and rolls. Habiba’s Ethiopian Kitchen brings a world of different flavors to the neighborhood. Habiba’s has been offering Ethiopian cuisine and catering options in Syracuse for over a year. A first generation Ethiopian-American, chef Habiba Boru serves up authentic halal food from beef sambusa to misir wot and doro alecha.
PLAY In the heart of the Strathmore neighborhood stands Onondaga Park — an 86-acre oasis complete with a swimming pool, playground, Firebarn and the stunning Hiawatha Lake. A perfect spot for a hot summer day.
START Begin your day at a Syracuse landmark, The Gem Diner, just a short distance from the Inner Harbor area, for some serious omelettes and classic diner food.

Budget Weekend The Syracuse region is a great place to discover history, nature and summer fun while keeping cost in mind. Discover some of our top ways to enjoy a budget-friendly weekend in Syracuse.
EAT Check out one of the many summer festivals that occur throughout the region. Fill up on a variety of flavors with the Taste of Syracuse, a June festival highlighting the area restaurants and dining options and at which every stand has a $1 menu option. Try out some of the ethnic flavors available in the Syracuse area at the Polish Festival (June), Italian Fest (August), Greek Fest (June) or the Middle Eastern Festival, above, (August), to name a few. Each festival offers delicious food and large portions at a great price.

SHOP The Central New York Regional Market is a great place to pick up some local plants and products at an affordable price. Open year-round, the venue offers a Farmers Market that runs every Saturday as well as a Flea Market that runs every Sunday. The Farmers Market serves up area fruit, produce, dairy, meats and specialty food items, a variety of sampling options, soaps, plants, baked goods and more. The Flea Market offers antiques from throughout the region as well as other reduced-price items. The Syracuse Arts and Crafts Festival (July) also brings in hundreds of local and regional artists selling a variety of products. Peruse roughly six blocks of vendors set up in the Columbus Circle area or find that perfect purchase.
PLAY A top spot for summer outdoor activity, Onondaga Lake Park, left, is a sprawling 7.5 mile greenway featuring four trails, the Wegmans Playground, a skatepark, baseball fields and a sand volleyball court. Free to enter, guests can walk the trails, bring their own recreational equipment or rent a variety of bikes, inline skates, protective gear, quadricycles and amtrykes, for a small fee. Webster Pond is another small sanctuary and free attraction in the Valley area of Syracuse. Operated by the Anglers Association of Onondaga and featuring fish and wildlife as the main attraction, visitors can feed the wildlife with seed provided or explore the back trail.
SCENE Once again the area’s summer festivals shine when it comes to affordable things to do. The NYS Bluesfest (June) is one of the largest free blues events in the Northeast spanning three days and nights. The Northeast Jazz and Wine Festival (July) is another free event. While the wine tastings and food offerings will need to be purchased, the music offerings really bring the night to life with three stages, late night jam sessions and a scholastic festival. Country music fans will enjoy another great deal at the St. Joseph’s Health Amphitheater. The Country Mega Ticket offers lawn passes to seven major country music concerts for $200 – that’s an average of roughly $29 per ticket. The series includes shows from Lady Antebellum, below, Tim McGraw, Kenny Chesney, Thomas Rhett and more!

Both farm breweries have outdoor spaces that offer the opportunity for you, or the kiddos, to get up close and personal with goats, chickens and more. Heritage Hill also has a full kitchen and great views of the city, while Local 315 brings in bands and food trucks on the weekends.

Next time you take a stroll through our urban center, look out for these architectural gems: THE NIAGARA MOHAWK BUILDING: 300 Erie Blvd. West, right. Made of glass and steel, this nationally recognized example of the Art Deco style is adorned with “The Spirit of Light, a brilliant stainless steel sculpture over the main entrance. THE AMOS BLOCK: 200 block of West Water Street. Developed in 1878 by former Syracuse Mayor Jacob Amos, this Romanesque Revival building was built on the Erie Canal where goods were unloaded on spot. THE LANDMARK THEATRE: 362 S. Salina St., left. Step inside this theatre and see what was designed to be an “Indo-Persian fantasy world in 1927. THE THIRD NATIONAL BANK BUILDING: 107 James St., far right. This Queen Anne Style structure features carved sunflowers in a Gothic trefoil and its multi-gabled roof has been a Downtown vision since 1885.

THE EVERSON MUSEUM OF ART: 401 Harrison St., right. The Everson holds the prestige of being I.M. Pei’s first museum commission, which makes the building just as much of a work of art as the collections inside. This concrete oasis for art lovers is not to be missed. THE STATE TOWER BUILDING: 109 S. Warren St. This 1927 ode to the “Metropolitanâ€? style of Art Deco is the tallest building in Syracuse to date and holds the Visit Syracuse Visitors Center. The Shape of Water The opening of the Erie Canal in October 26, 1825 forever changed the transportation systems in New York State. The 363-mile long canal, which stretched from Buffalo to Albany, created a pathway that allowed farmers and tourists to travel twice as fast across New York. Coinciding with the building of the Erie Canal, the population of New York City quadrupled from 1820-1850. Beginning in 2017 and running through 2025, New York State will be celebrating the 200th Anniversary of the iconic waterway. This “bicentennial period” represents the time between the first groundbreaking in Rome in 1817 to the “Wedding of Waters in New York Harbor in 1825. Known as one of the greatest feats of engineering in its time, the Canal connected the Hudson River to Lake Erie, opening up the state and the Syracuse area to an influx of trade and ease of movement. During this time the population growth of the Syracuse area exploded, going from several hundred in 1820 to over 22,000 by 1850. Already a large export of salt in both the region and nation, the development of the Canal, partially backed by the salt industry, allowed for easier and cheaper transportation of salt across the nation, both increasing demand as well as the profit of salt producers in Syracuse. In 2020, the Erie Canal Museum, located in downtown Syracuse, will be celebrating 58 years of teaching the public about the history and culture that developed around the canal. The Museum features the 1850 National Register Weighlock Building, the world’s last remaining structure of its kind, which was converted into the museum so that it wasn’t demolished. In the past 58 years, the museum has collected almost 60,000 artifacts — many of which were donated by community members — ranging from costumes to sketched maps of the canal. At the museum, the history of the Erie Canal and surrounding areas are celebrated with multiple interactive exhibits. A trip to the museum is like a step back in time. Visitors are invited to experience life back in the 1850s and immerse themselves in the incredible role the Canal had in the growth and development of the United States. The Children’s Area allows kids to try on traditional clothes and play with traditional toys, while visitors of all ages will enjoy exploring and interacting with the full size replica canal boat.
Top, the Erie Canal Musem in Syracuse opened its doors on October 25, 1962. It celebrated and preserved the last remaining Weighlock Building in America. Left, a canal boat at the museum, which has a collection of artifacts that were used on the canal boat or brought in transport.
Admission to the Museum is free, but a suggested $5 donation is greatly appreciated. For more info on the Erie Canal Museum, including hours of operation and location, visit eriecanalmuseum.org.
