9:45 a.m. – 10:45 a.m. Arizona 1–3 CAAE Fellows Presentations Facilitator: Jorge Ancona, University of California, Riverside Robert G. Forman Fellowship The First American Philanthropists: Native American Alumni Experiences with University Advancement Using a case-study analysis, I explore the experiences of Native American alumni with university advancement. Data come from a document analysis, in-depth interviews and a focus group with leaders of a Native American alumni organization at a public research university in California. Findings reveal that Native American alumni, informed by their cultural values and experiences with generous individuals in their pathways to college, give back to their alma maters in various forms. A lack of trust in the university’s awareness, ability and accountability in supporting Native American students creates a sense duty for Native American alumni give back to their alma mater. I draw implications from my findings, discussing the importance of reciprocity in relationships when working with Native American alumni. My discussion also highlight the need to be relevant, respectful, and responsible when stewarding all forms of alumni Native American alumni gifts, in all forms, to the university. Speaker: Patricia Chau Nguyen, Senior Director, Diversity Programs, UCLA Jerry F. Tardy Fellowship Upgrading to a New Model: Leveraging Consumer Business Models to Target Alumni Through Entire Life Cycle To better engage with the entire young alumni community, Alumni and Constituent Engagement strives to build an innovative business model in which data, reflective of constituent needs and preferences, drives the content and program strategy for each transitional life phase. Through a segmented and personalized approach to life-stage marketing and programming, we hope to increase the number of engaged constituents and increase the depth and breadth of the donor pool. Speaker: Katie Sampson, Assistant Director, Student and Young Alumni Engagement, Temple University
Lawrence S. Preo Fellowship Online Alumni Engagement: How to Inspire, Track, and Measure Deepening Levels of Alumni Engagement As institutions seek to engage alumni where they are—mostly online—many are devoting increasing time and resources to expand their portfolio of online alumni engagement programs. Online engagement often offers a strong ROI and allows institutions to greatly expand their geographic footprint, but there are still questions to be answered regarding the impact of online programming and its efficacy in driving alumni to increase their engagement and philanthropy. By speaking with alumni leaders at nearly a dozen universities about their work to engage alumni online, my research explores the current successes and future challenges of online alumni engagement. After a brief update on the CASE Alumni Engagement Metrics initiative, CAAE members will help identify refinements to the CAAE Annual Census and Salary Survey. J T. Forbes and Mark Sollis will facilitate discussion on proposed changes to the Census and Survey and gather member feedback on measurement collecting, reporting, and expectations, as well as the ideal state, intended audiences, and most common uses of the data. 3:00 p.m. – 4:15 p.m. Arizona 1–3 Higher Education: If Only You Knew Us! How Data Science Could Likely Save Higher Education, Alumni Relations and Humanity. For all intents and purposes, the cure from cancer, world peace, or the eradication of human “isms” will likely come from the educated-graduate minds of the world’s colleges and universities. If only higher education could know alumni like megacommercial and nonprofit brands understand their customers, we would undoubtedly take alumni engagement to new levels. Unlike the mega-brands of modern culture, most colleges and universities are flying by the seat-of-their-pants in terms of data analytics, data science, and associated information technologies. In this timely session, brand, data and market intelligence experts will share how they leverage data to intimately know and understand the customer, many of whom are our alumni. The good news: soon, alumni organizations and the campuses they serve will benefit from cross-pollinating data intelligence through the likes of Amazon, Google and AARP and others. Wow! Now wouldn’t that be cool! Introduction: Mark Dickey, Vice President, Executive Engagement, Salesforce Moderator: Jean Pembleton, Sr. Manager, Industry Solutions, Salesforce Panelists:

10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. Arizona 1–3 So What’s Your Favorite Color? Successful alumni relations professionals will ask the all-important question: “what data should we collect to understand our graduates better?” Would it help to know one’s political affiliation, or if they shop at Trader Joe’s versus Aldi? Absolutely! Better yet, where would it take us if we knew if a graduate owned a shih tzu versus a rottweiler! In brief, data provides insight on a whole range of issues from programming and business development opportunities to engagement strategies and fundraising. In this timely session, we will speak with three CAAE colleagues who also happen to be social and behavioral experts. During this session we discuss the value and impact of asking the right questions of alumni and getting them to tell us what they need and want from life. By paying attention to data points, we can start to better segment the alumni base on what they truly value and help our institutions stay relevant in the lives of our alumni. Topics Discussion
July 15, 2019
CAAE board member Susan deMuth commenced the CAAE Topics Discussion at 7:57 a.m.
Report from the Census and Salary Survey Working Group J T. Forbes reiterated that the goals of the project to review the member census and salary survey remain unchanged: Collect and maintain essential data for benchmarking and decision-making; reduce collection and retrieval time; and provide a collaborative, transparent process. The next courses of action include: moving Evergreen Data to the Institutional Profile section; migrating Affinity Partner/Vendor Data to the more dynamic “Vendor Matrix” tool; and revising the data collected and the collection schedule for the Census and Salary data. Current/next steps include:
• June 2019 – Members begin activating profiles • August 2019 – Working Group formed (Forbes, McCausland, Andrasko + at least two more volunteers) • Winter 2020 – Membership session to review and prioritize data • Summer 2020 – Working Group reports out • The strategic intent remains: reduce essential data points and not add CASE engagement metrics. • For the “Show of Hands” and “Vendor Matrix” tools, everyone was again asked to activate their account at the following address: https://www.pcuad.org/portal/ index.cfm/event/account/org/caae
Update on the Bylaws Revision Hoopes Wampler reported that pursuant to the discussions held by the membership at the Winter Institute in Scottsdale, conversations continued between members on the proposed changes to the bylaws. Any further thoughts, comments or questions should be forwarded to Hoopes, who will bring the topic back to the membership for closure at the 2020 Winter Institute.
CAAE and CASE Update Brett Chambers, VP of Volunteer and Member Engagement at CASE, was invited to bring news from CASE. He provided an overview of activity in CASE’s four pillars of strategic intent, namely Member Engagement, Talent Management, Global Impact and Thought Leadership. Brett invited Fred Weiss, CASE’s Chief Research and Data Officer, to provide an overview of AMAtlas, a global resource for educational advancement-related metrics, benchmarks and analytics. In terms of CAAE member engagement within CASE, he reported that we have members currently serving on the Board of Trustees, Commissions and in other roles, such as conference faculty and more. To further augment CAAE’s thought leadership within the CASE landscape, he encouraged participation in a variety of leadership roles, such as on the Board of Trustees, USCanada Regional Council, Commission on Alumni Relations and District Boards and Advisory Groups; and as content experts, such as Conference/Webinar Speaker, Currents/ Books/Whitepaper Author, Awards Judge, Library Resource and Samples, and Awards Submissions.
