Welcome once again to Skills Summer Edition of the Skills Departure Lounge Magazine! Inside we have some great features plus a selection of interesting destinations to tempt you away. All 6 of these coaches have air conditioning, reclining seats and toilets that our customers have grown accustom to and they are also fitted with the latest EU 6 engine for low emissions which complies with our go-green policy. News for summer: Firstly I would like to personally thank everyone who braved the rain to join us for our Open Day back at the end of March, the turnout was just fantastic, close to one thousand of you turned up to join us and a gorgeous selection of hot food and cakes. It was great meeting and getting to know some of you and it was an excellent opportunity for the company to showcase our new coaches, to display the other coaches of companies that work alongside us and furthermore, it was a great opportunity for the holiday team to personally introduce the new Christmas brochures that has been newly released. If you haven’t got your copy make sure you request yours today! Also worth mentioning is our expansion of Silverdale Coaches who now join the Skills Group. This has added an extra 46 coaches and over 100 staff to our team meaning we can continue to provide you with the very best service. My plans for the summer: During the middle of May I’m actually going drag racing at Santa Pod, in Bedfordshire, with my son Tom which I am quite looking forward too. I’m then heading up to Scotland to check out some hotels that we use, and my good friend Mr Cleaver has promised to take me on his boat around the Western Islands to explore the wildlife and hopefully see some Dolphins.

Growing up Paul had always been passionate about motor sports and in particular, cars, having been to various F1, BTCC, MotoGP and Rally events across Britain, last year Paul, found himself yearning to visit a racing event in which he could attend, picking up the Skills brochure he stumbled upon ‘Goodwood Revival Festival’ which is also available to book in 2015 departing Join in the action Friday 11th September for 3 days from £219pp. “This is the most spectacular and enjoyable motor event. It was amazing and a must see experience. The whole event is really special!” The event takes you on a journey back in time to the 1940’s – 1960’s era when there was more romance over motorsport. We arrived at the event just before 9am, luckily for us the coaches get to park really close to the entrance (unlike the cars) so it’s ideal, just a short walk to the entrance and you’re instantly transformed back in time, as we made our way along to the racing circuit spectators walked passed us dressed in period costumes from the 1940’s era, there were glamour pit girls dressed in their original 1950’s outfits, dads army and different groups dotted all around smiling and greeting each other, the atmosphere was electric. The day started with plenty of racing, we managed to get a spot really close to the circuit much closer than most modern F1 events. The first race began with a selection of classic cars, the exhausts humming as they raced bumper to bumper; nose to tail along the circuit, it was unbelievable. Later the racing continued with current and former F1 drivers and a bunch of TV celebrities, while I was there I spotted Tiff Needle, Rowan Atkinson, Gordan Shedon and Sir Jackie Stewart to name but a few. Finally, the racing concluded with impressive V8 Jaguars, McLarens and Aston Martins fighting it out which sounded incredible as they zoomed by. “You are so close to that action that as the afternoon heat cools, you feel the heat radiate from the engines and exhausts as the cars zoom past, you feel it on your skin, the smell of racing fuel and rubber being laid down on the track leaves you with goose bumps.” In between racing events we had time to wander around the infields, the wide open space is filled with gleaming marques, designated food areas, a variety of bands playing music and a stylish Goodwood village which had all been created with a 1940’s theme, including a retro Tesco store where you can purchase fresh goods in their original packaging. However, the day is about much more than just cars, as we strolled around in the sunshine spying at static classic cars and classic aircrafts on display, the music fell silent with the roar of a Spitfire which suddenly flew above us, memorised by its enormity and charm by the crowd. I quickly realised that we were actually in the middle of an air display which continued throughout the day showcasing everything from Hawks to Mustangs and early fighter jets! Towards the end of the day we saw two Lancaster Bombers do several fly pasts accompanied by four spitfires and two Hawker Hurricanes, it was simply breath taking everyone stopped in their tracks and fell silent as the incredible sound of those merlin engines beautifully in sync flew overhead. “We spent a full day there from 9am-6pm, it was a long day but well worth it. It’s probably the best and most interesting and enjoyable event I’ve ever been too!”

Royal Ascot “Day at the Races” Ladies day at Royal Ascot is one of the most eagerly anticipated events on the racing calendar not just for the horses but for the vibrant, eye-catching fashion on offer. This extravagant event is renowned for its elegant (but strict) dress code, trademark ‘big’ hats and sparkling Pimms, the stamp of any British summer event. Last year I went with my mum on the Skills overnight, after we were collected by the coach we headed south and a short while later we arrived at the Bicester Village, set in the heart of Oxfordshire this amazing shopping village boasts spacious boutiques and offers a range of top designer brands so we had to be careful not to spend all of our money on the first day. After a relaxing nights’ stay at the hotel we woke up early the next morning fresh faced and in our best dresses ready for the day

ahead. We arrived at Ascot Racecourse at around 10:30am, greeted with a wonderful blue sky and the sun gleaming high above us. The driver finished handing out everyone’s tickets and we quickly left the coach behind in search of the entrance, we were lucky enough to have Grandstand tickets which meant just a short walk across the carpark and up some stairs. Bursting with spectators all coolly walking passed us, all laughing and sipping on their first champagne, large white marquee’s where dotted around selling food and fizz the Grandstand offers a sophisticated experience with uncompromised views of the final few furlongs of the race and situated in the middle stood the grand Parade Ring – this is the area where the jockeys and trainers showcase their horses before the race. 2 day from £119pp - Wednesday 17th June.

My perfect day would begin with a refreshing morning stroll along the Marina Port Vell, situated in the heart of Barcelona; from here you can wander towards Las Ramblas, a gorgeous tree-line walkway surrounded by tall, grand buildings and alive with street performers and delicious smells of the different cuisines gracefully filling the air. This is the perfect opportunity to pop into one of the many open air restaurants and treat yourself to a gorgeous selection of tapas and a fishbowl cocktail! Make sure you stop off at La Boqueria; on entering this amazing indoor market you are met with rows of the most exquisite hand-made chocolate and nuts, stalls are piled high with mouth-watering fruits, vegetables and cheeses. Once you reach the square Plaça de Catalunya (at the top of Las Ramblas) hop on an open top bus because it’s the easiest way to see all the must-see attractions dotted around the city. As the sun starts to sink in the late afternoon sky drift back down Las Ramblas and finish off your day with another cocktail as you watch the world charmingly pass you by.

Day 1 -Day 1 Using the motorways today, making stops en route, we arrive in good time for dinner. Day 2 - A day at leisure! Why not visit St. Ives by train? It’s just a five minute ride from the hotel car park/Carbis Bay station! Day 3 - A full day out today with a morning break in Perranporth, before going on to spend an hour or two in the charming little fishing port of Mevagissey on Cornwall’s southern coastline. Day 4 - The first port of call today is Mousehole, a tiny coastal village below Penzance. From there we travel to nearby Land’s

End for our midday break before following the pretty coast road through St. Just, back to St. Ives and, eventually, the hotel. Day 5 - A short ride out, through Hayle and along the coast to Portreath to visit the ‘Cornish Goldsmiths’ Centre’ (always popular!) Later, we spend an hour or so in Penzance before returning to our hotel. Day 6 - A morning visit to Trebah, one of Europe’s finest tropical gardens, then into Falmouth for lunchtime and the afternoon. There’s a superb Maritime Museum, or boat trips on the river. After a short break we ride back down to where we find our waiting coach. Day 4 - South to Kirkby Lonsdale this morning, where the market is in full swing. From there we continue, passing the famous Ribblesdale viaduct, into the small town of Settle. Here, we start our third train journey – and possibly the most famous of them all, as we ride through the Yorkshire Dales National Park, all the way from Settle to Carlisle! Following the succession of our fantastic open day on the 29th March where hundreds of you queued up, we would just like to thank those for attending the event. Those of you who came to visit us were fortunate to collect a goodie bag on entrance, feast on some succulent pulled pork cobs, experience the launch of our new coaches, visit our product stalls and search high and low in our spectacular “Skills Scavenger Hunt”. Not only that but guests were also warmed up over a hot steamy cuppa tea with delicious cakes and met the whole team who work behind the scenes at Skills. On the day there was plent of chances to win many prizes which would be awarded at our special suprise at the “Prize Winners Coffee Morning” at the Skills Head Office on the 15th April. To congratulate all of our lucky prize winners we, once again, invited them to join us at our head office for a suprise morning enticing them with a selection of scrumptious cakes and hot drinks. Our winners arrived at around 10:30am to a glass of bucks’ fizz on arrival and a chance to sit back, relax and introduce themselves to one another and the team before Nigel Skill, the Chairman of Skills Holidays, presented each of them with their prizes.
