NOTES FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK After successfully publishing the Coal and Quarry Miner’s Exchange for over 25 years, we started The Northeast ONG Marketplace with the same business model – a direct mail publication to decision-makers in the industry at no charge so that they could find the businesses to could support their needs. That model has proven to be successful in the oil and gas industry as well. Since our first issue in October of 2011, we have grown from a distribution of about 7,000 to now pushing closer to 11,000. As we’ve grown in distribution, we’ve also grown in understanding what our readers want. Many tell us they love our events calendars. They also appreciate learning more about companies through our business profiles and press releases. We want to provide content that will help producers, operators, and support companies operate more efficiently and grow. The next step in our growth is to focus our content even more. In 2013, we’re introducing our editorial calendar. We’ll customize our articles, profiles and press releases so that each topic can be explored more fully. The start of our calendar is below. If you have a topic you’d like us to cover later in the year or wish to contribute to these topics, please let us know. Also listed below are some of the shows where we’ll be attending, distributing, or exhibiting. Hope to see you there!

SAFETY ON THE JOB Cold Weather Awareness - Frostbite & Hypothermia Along with the holiday season, the month of December will also bring with it the first day of winter and a significant drop in temperatures. When working outdoors, this drop in temperature can be sudden and life threatening. The following article will define and outline frostbite and hypothermia, what signs and symptoms to be aware of, a few treatment options and some tips on how to stay safe and warm while on the job. While the information in this article won’t help keep you out of the cold, it should give you some insight as to how to keep safely protected from the elements. Frostbite Frostbite occurs when the skin and body tissue just beneath the skin freeze. Frostbite causes a loss of feeling and color in the affected area, and most commonly affects the nose, ears, cheeks, chin, fingers and toes. When stricken with frostbite, the skin will become very cold, then numb, hard and pale. As a result of the fact that frostbite usually affects smaller, more exposed parts of the body and begins with a numbing sensation, it is possible for areas of frostbite to go unnoticed until someone else points it out.
skin is rewarmed, but will not permanently damage the skin. The second stage is known as superficial frostbite. This stage occurs as the reddened skin turns white or very pale. Although the skin may remain soft, it is likely that some ice crystals may form on the tissue. If treated at this stage, the skin may appear mottled, blue or purplish as it is warmed or thawed. The affected person may notice some stinging, burning or swelling of the area, as well as a fluid-filled blister on the affected area within 24 to 36 hours. The third stage is severe or deep frostbite. If full frostbite has set in, all of the layers of skin as well as the tissues below have been affected. If severe or deep frostbite occurs, seek immediate medical attention, as large blisters and black areas of dead tissue are likely to develop. Frostbite generally occurs in one or a combination of 2 different ways. First is losing body heat, which is frostbite in conjunction with hypothermia. As the body loses heat, it reduces blood flow to the extremities to protect internal functions. When this reduction in blood flow to the extremities occurs, the body temperature on these areas drops quickly and can result in freezing tissue. The second way to get frostbite is from direct contact with something very cold. When in direct contact with very cold items, such as ice or metal, heat is conducted away from the body. Exposure to items at these temperatures lowers the temperature of the skin, freezing the tissue. Frostbite can be prevented, and the following are a few ways to keep safe and warm while on the job. By limiting the time spent outdoors in cold, wet or windy weather and by dressing in layers, it is very easy to keep control of your body temperature. Ears and fingertips are very susceptible to frostbite, so try to wear a hat that completely covers the ears, and include a face shield as well if possible. It is also a good idea to wear mittens instead of gloves when possible, as mittens provide better protection for the fingers. Keeping alert for signs and symptoms of frostbite, as well as having an emergency kit that includes warm clothing are also very easy ways to keep protected from dropping temperatures.

A few signs and symptoms of frostbite include, but are not limited to, a slight prickly or itching sensation, red, white pale or grayish-yellow skin, hard or waxy looking skin, burning sensations, numbness, clumsiness due to joint or muscle stiffness, and in more severe cases, blistering. If you start no notice any of these signs, immediately get into a warmer area. If showing signs such as blistering or areas of black skin, immediately contact a medical profes- sional. It is important to remember that frostbite occurs in stages. Stage one is known as frostnip, a mild form of frostbite where your skin will turn red and feel very cold. If treated at this stage, frostnip may create slight pain and tingling as the

Hypothermia Hypothermia occurs when the body loses heat faster than it can produce heat, causing a dangerously low body temperature. Normal body temperature is usually around 98.6o F, hypothermia occurs as the body temperature passes below 95o F. When the body temperature drops, the heart, nervous system and other organs can’t work correctly. If left untreated, hypothermia can eventually lead to complete failure of the heart and respiratory systems, and eventually to death.
Overexertion. Avoid overexerting yourself and creating sweat. A combination of wet clothing and cold will lead to a faster loss of body heat.
Hypothermia is most often caused by exposure to cold weather or immersion in a cold body of water. Some signs and symptoms of hypothermia include but are not limited to shivering, slurred speech, confusion, drowsiness, loss of consciousness, weak pulse and slow or shallow breathing. It is important to remember that a person suffering from hypothermia usually isn’t aware of their condition. Be aware of co-workers, as the confusion usually associated with hypothermia prevents selfawareness.
Hypothermia and frostbite are very serious medical conditions and should be avoided at all costs. Hopefully this article has delivered some insight to what to look for as well as what to do if an emergency presents itself in cold conditions. Planning properly and having the correct gear on hand can mean the difference between life and death when dealing with extremely cold conditions. For more information on frostbite and hypothermia, visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website at www.cdc.gov.
If someone on your crew is suffering from hypothermia symptoms, first contact a medical professional. After calling for help, first remember to be gentile with the affected person. Do not massage or rub someone who may be hypothermic as excessive, vigorous or jarring movements may trigger cardiac arrest. Next, try to move the person out of the cold and remove any wet clothing. If unable to remove the person from the cold, do your best to shield them from the cold and wind as much as possible and try to insulate them from the cold ground. Use blankets, share body heat and attempt to provide warm, non-caffeinated beverages as a means to increase body temperature. If using warm compresses, remember to only apply them to the neck, chest wall or groin. Do not apply heat to the arms or legs, as this could force cold blood back to the vital organs, causing the core temperature to drop. This drop in core temperature can be fatal. Do not apply direct heat, such as hot water, a heating pad or heating lamp to warm the affected person. This extreme heat can damage skin, cause an irregular heartbeat, or cause cardiac arrest.
By Chris Chadwick, Safety Products Coordinator at SunnySide Supply, Inc. www.SunnySideSupply.com
There are a few hypothermia prevention tips, very similar to frostbite prevention, which are very easily remembered by using the acronym COLD. Cover. Wear a hat or other protective covering to prevent body heat from escaping from your head face and neck. Also keep your hands protected with mittens, as they are more effective than gloves.
Layers. Layering your clothing will allow for removal to reduce sweating, or the addition of layers for added protection. Dry. Stay as dry as possible. Get out of wet clothing as soon as possible, and pay close attention to keeping your hands and feet dry.

Business Profile
Colorado Lining International, Inc. was founded in 1978, in Parker, Colorado and is a certified fabricator and installer of quality geomembranes. Colorado Lining has been family owned and operated and has grown from a small 4 person fabrication crew to becoming an industry leader in solving complicated containment issues with turn-key geosynthetic services for many industries, including the Oil & Gas industry. The company has over 3 decades of service and has fabricated and installed more than 800 million square feet of geomembranes and specialty materials.
CLI’S OIL & GAS CONTAINMENT OFFERINGS POND, PIT AND IMPOUNDMENT LINERS Proper engineering and construction of lining systems used in the containment of production water generated by horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing processes is a critical issue for the future of oil and gas production. The Federal and State governments as well as many industry organizations recognize their responsibility for the health and welfare of their communities in relation to the drilling, processing & storage of Oil & Gas or applications. CLI offers a variety of materials designed and engineered for oil and gas applications. By offering custom sized panels which eliminate up to 80% of field seams we can guarantee quality and speed construction in the field. We also offer trained and certified field services crews all with the proper health and safety training required to meet your specific needs. Supportive materials are often necessary for containment that are reliable and extremely safe for the environment. These specialty materials like GCLs, Geocomposites and Geotextiles add peace of mind and confidence to the ability of a complete system. MOBILE WATER IMPOUNDMENTS Colorado Lining’s storage tank options are becoming a popular alternative to ground storage. Above ground storage systems are appealing for a number of reasons. These systems are designed for multiple sets and are easy to install and remove. They are highly visible, require very little excavation, leaks are quickly detected, and secondary containment is often less complicated. CLI’s panel fabrication and production is done in our climate controlled factories providing high quality certified seams that save both time and money in the field. CLI recommends the use of reinforced lining materials for this application. With vertical wall applications such as the mobile water impoundments the reinforcing scrim adds tremendous strength and durability to the wall sections of each panel.
SECONDARY CONTAINMENT Colorado Lining recognizes the importance and necessity of regulation for environmental safety specific to this trade. Secondary and spill containment is critical for oil and gas. CLI has a trusted reputation with geomembrane systems for secondary containment, but is evolving with the industry and is now offering it’s Ecodur Spray On Liner as an alternative to geomembranes. It is VOC & Solvent Free making it an even better choice for the environment. It is easily installed and cures and dries quickly. It too can be specified and designed as part of a multilayer system to meet specific regulation. FLOATING COVERS With the protection of ground, water and land elements, comes the thought and requirement for protection of wildlife and against air and odor pollutants. With one of the best Technical groups in the market CLI has been able to offer innovative solutions to the floating cover market in the Oil and Gas Industry. CLI has utilized its experience in gas collecting systems for agriculture to provide cost effective cover systems that are designed and engineered for the long term in tough Oil and Gas applications. A BELIEF IN SUPERIOR TRAINING & CERTIFICATION CLI credits an experienced, dedicated and well trained team with it’s success. CLI adheres to Safeland USA, ISNetworld & PEC Premiere Standards. Their in house Quality Control programs for factory and field seam testing follow strict ASTM Standards that meet or exceed all industry standards. Colorado Lining is an IAGI Approved Installation Contractor and is dedicated to training and certifying it’s welding technicians through the Certified Welding Technician Program. Ever changing government requirements and environmental issues have led to the need for new and innovative containment solutions around the world and especially in the shale, oil and gas industries. Colorado Lining has become highly specialized in this field, with a sound understanding of the geomembrane industry, providing it’s customers with a consistent and expanding knowledge base, expert technical support and design information to ensure an economical, quality solution to all containment needs and challenges.
