Wedding planning timeline
WORDS: HAYLEY GRIFFITHS
The ring is on your finger, now it’s time to get planning for your big day. But the question is – where to start? Whether it’s an intimate soiree or a large luxe gathering you’re planning, we know how overwhelming it can feel ensuring nothing is missed. That’s why we’ve collated this go-to guide on what to do and when to do it – tick off as you go. And remember to take what you need – every wedding is unique and not everything we mention has to be included. Happy planning!
18 Months Out
The all-important finances are first up and will really determine what you can (and can’t) spend your money on. Take the time to decide what is most important to you as a couple – perhaps it’s epic cinematography and the dress of your dreams or good food. Then allocate the majority of your budget to what matters the most. Input the numbers into a spreadsheet, then you can refine as the quotes start coming in and keep track of your spending.
14 Months Out
Select your wedding venue & date
This is a really important decision to make and can set the tone for the entire day. Securing your venue and date is a big first step, as so many of your other wedding details will depend on the time of year and location. It will also impact how many people you invite and what they will wear, so take your time exploring different options. Decide if you will have a separate ceremony location and reception location, or if they will be held at the same venue. And if you’re thinking about a destination wedding, consider giving guests the most notice possible.
First draft of guest list
When working on the essential (yet sometimes stressful) task of putting together a guest list, make sure you consider your venue’s capacity and overall budget.
Jess, from Planned by Page
It’s all about investing larger portions of your budget on your ‘non negotiables’. Vendors who you couldn’t imagine your day without and what you see value in. It’s also a combination of mixing your wants and being realistic with what you can afford on your day. I find there are always ways to compromise and get the best of both worlds.
Book your photographer/ videographer
When the big day flies by, you’ll have beautiful photos and videos to look back on when reminiscing about all the special moments of your wedding. It’s important to note that photographers only shoot a limited number of weddings per year. So if you’ve got your heart set on a particular photographer or videographer, lock them in ASAP to avoid disappointment. And hot tip – make sure you vibe with your chosen photographer, as you’ll be spending a lot of time with them on your wedding day!
12 Months Out
Decide on a planner/stylist
A helping hand with an eye for detail may be just what you need to save yourself from the stress of planning a wedding. It’s always best to decide early on if a stylist or planner is right for you, so they can be there through all of your decisions from the very start of your wedding planning.
Jess, from Planned by Page
Planning a wedding can be overwhelming with so many options, opinions and social media showing you weddings with all the trimmings. A planner can help you narrow your vision and block out the ‘noise’ by showing you options for your budget, how to create your vision and you’ll have all their knowledge at your disposal. Having a planner by your side for the journey keeps it stress free, and you have the best secret weapon to ensure your day is magical and a true representation of you as a couple.
Choose your florist
Stunning blooms can really set the scene and add something magical to your day. Look at some florist accounts on Instagram, get pinning on your wedding board and visit a flower market to get inspired. When chatting with potential florists, ask them what flowers are in season at the time of your wedding, outline your vision and make sure the budget is confirmed straight up.
Renay from All Occasion Flowers
Work with a qualified florist with experience and knowledge of the seasons and availability. Choose flowers that are in season – this avoids disappointment if Mother Nature has a different idea. A good florist will always have three solutions to offer before you even know there is a problem!
Pick your caterer
Start planning the types of food you want (this is included in some reception venues). Explore your options for caterers, food trucks and any other food related elements of your big day – like gelato vans and cocktail caravans. Also discuss with your venue if drinks are included, and if you need to hire bar staff or BYO.
Matt, from The Gelato Bike
We started The Gelato Bike with the thought that we could be a fun and easy option for dessert at weddings or even a post-ceremony treat for guests. It’s a really memorable sweet option that guests absolutely love – plus all our gelato is make locally in Berry.
Hire a celebrant
The person who will marry you, guide you through all the legalities and personalise your ceremony is rather important in the scheme of things! This obviously depends on whether you’re getting married at a church or at a venue where selecting a celebrant is required. Make sure you hire someone who you can relate to and feel at ease with, as they take the time to get to know you as a couple and what you value in the official proceedings.
Linda, from Celebrant Services Illawarra
A first meeting with a celebrant can just be a 'meet and greet' with no obligation. This helps to gauge if you and the celebrant click. It's ok to meet with more than one if you're unsure, as it's important to have someone on the same page as you.
Hair & makeup
Are you doing your own makeup and hair or hiring in the experts? Spend time researching suppliers located within a couple of hours of where you will be getting ready on the day. We always recommend getting a trial done a few months prior, so you’ll know if you have to make tweaks to your desired look. Also spend some time gathering inspiration for your bridesmaids' hair and makeup, so you can brief your chosen hair and makeup artist.
Roza, from Total Bliss Hair and Makeup
Ensure you book your hair and makeup trial as close as possible to the wedding day, as your hair will be similar in length, colour and texture. Your hen's day is a perfect time.
10 Months Out
Start shopping
It’s time to revisit all those times you’ve imagined what your dream wedding gown will look like. Have a think about what you both want to wear and make a list of go-to boutiques or designers that you’d like to visit. And remember if you would like a custom-made or couture gown, the process takes much longer.
Revisit your guest list
As the special day creeps closer, now is the time to finalise your guest list and whittle down the numbers to ensure you’re not over capacity. Collect everyone’s postal addresses on a spreadsheet for your invitations and breathe a sigh of relief, as the guest list is locked in.
9 Months Out
Stationery
As they say, first impressions count. When guests receive your wedding invite in the mail (or online), this sets the tone of what to expect on the special day. Although invitations are only sent out around three months prior, this is the time to decide if you’d like bespoke stationery designed or if you’ll use a template (in this case, you have more time on your hands). It’s great to get the ball rolling, especially if you want to send out save-the-dates.
Save-the-dates
This is particularly useful if you’re planning a destination wedding or if the majority of your guests have to travel far and wide for your nuptials. Guests will appreciate having plenty of notice to book flights, accommodation and arrange time off work if needed.
Honeymoon planning
Often described as the fun part of wedding planning, dreaming of where you’ll be on vacation as a newly married couple is exciting. The destination, length of holiday and budget will all play a part in how organised ahead of time you need to be. But we recommend chatting to a travel agent and locking in some details if you’re going international – you may be able to save some cash on early bird deals.
8 Months Out Entertainment
Do you want to be serenaded with an acoustic guitar or is a live band more your thing? Decide what kind of music you want and at what times of the proceedings. Perhaps a string trio while you walk down the aisle and an epic DJ to get the party started at the reception. Narrow down your favourites and enquire about pricing and availability.
7 Months Out
Cake selection
The tastiest part of planning, now is the time to think about the type of cake you’d love to serve up to guests. Is it a three-tiered beauty, French inspired Croquembouche or a doughnut wall? The choice is totally yours, book in your vendor and arrange a taste test to select your flavour combinations.
6 Months Out
Gift registry
Decide if you’re having a traditional wishing well or perhaps opting for an online gift registry. Then sit down and discuss what you’d like on there as a couple. Feel free to do something a little out of the box like having your guests purchase honeymoon activities.
Engagement shoot
Although definitely not essential, we think there’s something so sweet about capturing your love a few months out from the wedding. An engagement shoot is also a fab way to get to know your photographer better, so you both feel comfortable in front of the camera on your wedding day.
5 Months Out
The rings
The all important bling, it’s time to sort your wedding bands. You may want to match your wedding ring to your engagement ring, so going back to the same designer could be the best option. Whether simple or completely bespoke, it can take several months to have the rings sized up and crafted to perfection.
Hire items
Chloe, from Willow George Cake Co
A popular option with couples is considering a different shape - low and wide cakes or a slab style rather than a tiered cake. Slab style is easier to cut and can look really unique.
If there are some elements of the day that you’ll be implementing yourself, like styling or setting up parts of the venue, now is the time to get these bits and pieces organised. This can include hiring or purchasing lighting, glassware, tables and chairs, napkins and more. It’s also a good idea to create a run sheet, so you can determine who will be responsible for the setup and pack down, at allocated times.
4 Months Out
Book transportation
Securing transportation for your wedding day is crucial for ensuring smooth transitions and a stress-free experience. From getting you to the ceremony on time to whisking you away to your honeymoon destination, decide on the mode of transportation whether classic limousine, vintage car or your dad’s convertible.
Determine a wet weather plan
While you dream of sunny skies for your wedding day, it's essential to have a backup plan in case of inclement weather. From securing indoor venues or tents to arranging for umbrellas and sheltered areas, having a contingency in place will keep your guests comfortable and your festivities running smoothly.
3 Months Out
Send your invitations
It's time to send them out and spread the excitement! Posting your invitations marks a significant milestone in your wedding planning journey, as you officially invite loved ones to celebrate your special day. Make sure to include all necessary details, such as venue, date, RSVP information and any special instructions.
RSVPS
Stay organised and tick off who has confirmed their attendance with your handy guestlist spreadsheet. You can also include any dietary requirements, which can be easily passed onto your caterer.
Seating chart
Crafting a seating chart may seem like a logistical task, but it's an essential element of your wedding planning if you’re having a sit-down
dinner. Consider guest preferences, relationships and group dynamics to create an atmosphere where everyone feels comfortable and engaged (no awkwardness guaranteed).
Fittings
Whether it's your bridal gown, groom's suit or attire for the wedding party, fittings ensure that every detail fits flawlessly. From hemming to tailoring, these sessions allow you to make necessary adjustments to achieve the perfect fit and silhouette. Some designers will be able to recommend their preferred alteration specialist or can manage it in-house for you.
2 Months Out
Details & DIY
Make a list of all the little details to confirm –from guest books to table numbers, place cards and accessories, they can easily get missed otherwise. And if you’re DIY-ing any part of your wedding such as decorations or favours, gather your bride tribe or groomsmen and get creating together.
1 Month Out
Write vows
Writing vows is a deeply personal and meaningful aspect of your wedding preparation. It's your opportunity to articulate your love, commitment and promises to your partner in your own words. Take the time to reflect on your relationship and what it means to you both, then put pen to paper to create vows that resonate. And don’t forget to provide your celebrant with your Notice of Intended Marriage.
Gifts
With your nearest and dearest lending a hand and supporting you through the process of planning a wedding, it’s the perfect opportunity
to say a big thank you. This could be organising something special to gift to your parents and inlaws or a sentimental present for your partner to open the morning of the wedding.
2 Weeks Out
Hair trial
It's time for a test run of your hair and makeup before the big day. Remember to take your veil or hair accessories, plus some inspo photos. Share your theme, flowers and colours to make sure the look all ties together.
Check-in with vendors
In the final weeks, it's essential to touch base with all your vendors to confirm details and finalise arrangements. Discuss timelines, logistics and any last-minute changes to guarantee a more seamless experience on the big day. Also ensure everyone has been paid and is on the same page, ready to go!
1 Week Out Emergency kit
A wedding day is full of surprises, so be prepared for anything. Assemble an emergency kit with practical essentials to tackle unforeseen challenges. Include items like safety pins, stain remover, tissues, mints and adhesive bandages.
Final prep
Eeeek! Do one last check over of your wedding day run sheet and planning docs. Note down things that need to be done or packed on a task list according to your run sheet. Don’t forget to send it to your wedding party or any other key people.
Nisa, from Nutrition with Nisa Getting enough sleep is essential for overall wellbeing, especially in the lead up to your big day. It is a vital time for your body and mind to recover and recharge.
72 Hours Out
Pamper yourself and your bridal party with any beauty appointments like nails, a spray tan and relaxing massage to unwind and relax after months of planning.
48 Hours Out
Practise your vows, pack for your honeymoon and ensure your wedding party have all their necessary items ready to go (outfits, shoes, jewellery, cufflinks, ties – all the essentials).
24 Hours Out
Relax and soak it all in, knowing that tomorrow you’ll be married to the love of your life. Have a casual dinner, drink plenty of water and try to get some beauty sleep – you’ll need it.
The Day Has Arrived!
The PerfectCoastal Wedding
Our day was an absolute dream thanks to The Sebel
Meet Tiana and Carl
From the moment Carl pulled out a ring and asked Tiana that very important question, the pair immediately started planning their dream wedding at The Sebel Kiama. Here’s a sneak peek into their big day!
The Ceremony
Held in the sunny garden courtyard, set against the gorgeous bluestone heritage building and overlooking Kiama’s stunning harbour, Tiana and Carl said their ‘I do’s’ surrounded by their family, friends and fur baby.
The Celebration
Guests kicked off the festivities in style, enjoying canapes and bubbles from the Champagne fountain in the Oyster Bar, before moving to the marquee, decorated with long tables, fairy lights, greenery and white roses, neon signs and disco balls.
A three-course feast was on the menu, with perfectly paired wines to match the delicious King prawns, pork belly, pan-seared chicken and juicy lamp rump, rounded off with lemon meringue tart. Chef’s kiss!
The Dancing
To get the party moving, Tiana, Carl and their guests took to the dancefloor. And as the last song faded, the loved-up couple made their way back to their Ocean View room to spend their first night as Mr & Mrs in style.
And just like that…
Tiana and Carl had their best day ever, thanks to The Sebel Kiama and our dream team of vendors.

How to have an eco-friendly wedding
Planning a wedding is an exciting time and a chance to make a difference. You can make your special day more eco-friendly by choosing options that reduce waste and limit your carbon footprint. Don't underestimate the power of small decisions – they can add up to make a big impact.
WORDS: HADASSA RORKE
Your wedding is a unique opportunity to make a positive impact on the environment. With a mindful approach and strategic choices, you can host a sustainable celebration that celebrates your love, while reflecting your values and helping to protect our planet.
Reuse or go vintage with your wedding outfits
Choosing wedding outfits can be a lot of fun, but it's also an opportunity for you to make sustainable choices. Many outfits are worn just once, which can create a lot of waste and emissions.
To help reduce your impact, consider shopping from designers who use eco-friendly fabrics or buy pre-loved outfits. Create a celebration of love that is stylish and kind to the planet by encouraging your wedding party and guests to make eco-friendly clothing choices as well.
Location, location, location
Think carefully about your wedding location and see if you can find a venue that's close enough for your guests. Why not combine the ceremony and reception at one venue to minimise travel, and in turn reduce carbon emissions? Alternatively, provide a shuttle service that can transport multiple guests at once.
Wedding suppliers such as musicians, photographers, florists, etc. can be chosen from your community to limit travel time to an hour’s radius. This will make a big impact on your wedding being eco-friendly.
Venues that share your goals
Choose eco-friendly venues that have a dynamic approach to managing their carbon footprint. Food and drink will have a major impact, so ask about the menu options available and if these align with your values.
Do they grow their own produce or use local growers, use renewable energy to power their buildings, and work towards healthier communities?
The right venue will set the tone for your guest experience and many eco-friendly venues are renowned for lush gardens and beautiful outdoor spaces.
Reduce paper stationery and single-use decorations
Reducing paper stationery and single-use decorations is a great way to make your wedding eco-friendly. Instead of traditional paper invitations, consider using digital invitations or plantable seed cards.
For place cards, you could use natural materials like wood and stone or even beautifully dried leaves with your guests' names on them. For decorations, try to avoid single-use items like balloons or plastics, and opt for reusable items like cloth napkins, table runners, and centrepieces made from potted plants or flowers.
Think local and seasonal with your flowers
Flowers are another highlight! Choosing sustainable flower suppliers or farm-to-table flowers is an excellent way to reduce your carbon footprint and support local growers. Check with your suppliers as to what seasonal flowers are available to avoid using flowers that must be flown in.
Using live plants in little pots for decoration is also a fantastic alternative to traditional flowers. Not only will this reduce waste, but it also allows your guests to take home a lovely gift that they can enjoy long after the wedding day. Keep in mind that when using live plants, you save flowers from being thrown out after just one day.
By making these small changes, you can help reduce waste and make your wedding more sustainable without sacrificing style or elegance.
Beach and Ocean
Here in the Illawarra, we are spoiled with the ocean literally at our doorstep. From laid-back ceremonies under the sun or more formal receptions by the water’s edge, beach inspired weddings promise a perfect blend of understated elegance.
There are many chic venues to explore by the coastline or opt for something more casual with a beach celebration in a surf club – nothing beats watching the sunset with your loved ones over the waves.

Emily & Jonny
The Pavilion, Kiama
How long have you been together?
Six years.
Share with us a little about the proposal and how long you were engaged for?
It was on a Monday morning (we both work in hospitality and Mondays are our only day off). On Sunday night, Jonny insisted that he wanted to go on an adventure and watch the sunrise –we live on the far South Coast and have been there for over a year and never caught a sunrise. I wanted to go to the gym that morning and we were bickering back and forth. He dropped the famous guilt trip line "you never want to do anything I want to do". Instantly I felt bad and agreed to go watch a sunrise with him. From there, he made sure we pulled into every beach along the way from 5:30am to find the perfect spot before the sunrise, knowing exactly what he had planned, me on the other hand was so off it. I was so annoyed I couldn't go to the gym, as I had planned to go to Canberra that night and booked a restaurant that we both wanted to try for ages. Finally, we pulled into a secluded
beach, some minor bickering back and forth around walking down to the beach to find the perfect spot to sit and watch the sunrise and as the sun was rising, he dropped to one knee, I started to cry and we soaked up the moment together on the beach before calling our families. We were engaged for 11 months before we got married.
Tell us what made you decide on the location for your wedding?
We both met in Sydney and knew we didn't want to get married there, but also had a lot of family and friends who would be travelling from there. After living on the South Coast, we knew we wanted it down here but not as far as where we are from. We picked Kiama as the destination as it was only 90 mins from Sydney and fairly close to travel to whether it was from the South Coast, Canberra or Sydney. We literally only looked at one venue and that was The Pavilion in Kiama and locked it in within the same week we viewed it. We loved how picturesque Kiama is, surrounded by water and we loved that it gave that mini coastal destination wedding vibe.
What was the inspiration for your wedding?
I’m Chinese and my husband is Samoan, so culture was really important to us. Having elements which showcased our backgrounds had to be included. These included our Chinese tea ceremony, my Samoan Siva, the Hakka and dances from Jonny’s side of the family.
Can you share some of your favourite details about your wedding day?
My Chinese tea ceremony dress and my family made a Samoan Siva dress (which Jonny’s cousins helped me put together). They also taught me the dance a week before our wedding and then we practised the night before, it was a real family bonding moment that I loved. But I also loved my florals from Willow and Bear, I wish I had the room to take them all home. What were the standout memories from your special day?
This was really hard to pick because the whole day was amazing for the both of us. For me, it
was walking down the aisle with my dad and seeing Jonny so emotional and shedding tears. For Jonny, it was entering the reception venue as husband and wife and shooting the Chimoan (Chinese and Samoan) dollars from our money guns at the crowd – such a hype moment.
What does marriage mean to you as a couple?
Forever and ever. Officially a team. Supporting, encouraging, and loving unconditionally.
Do you have some advice that you would give to other couples in planning mode for their big day?
Try not to sweat the little stuff, you will spend all this time planning your dream wedding and on the day some things just won’t go to plan or the weather won’t be what you expected. But at the end of the day, you’re marrying your person and everyone has travelled to celebrate you both –that’s all that matters.

How
long have you been together?
Almost four and a half years. Share with us a little about the proposal and how long you were engaged for?
Crazily, we had spoken about marriage in the first few weeks of meeting each other. We clicked so well and both felt we knew we were right for each other quite soon after meeting. We love going on picnics and finding new beautiful spots along the coast. One day (eight months after we met) Tom took me to the National Park, and nervously asked to take a photo with him. He set up the phone, had music playing and started dancing with me… then he got down on one knee and popped the question.
Tell us what made you decide on the location for your wedding?
We love Mount Kembla and knew it was most likely going to be our choice before even visiting Ruby’s. We had a look at a few other venues prior, but when we went to Ruby’s we knew it was the perfect spot for us. On a mountain with cobble stones, greenery, fairy lights and you feel like you’re in the middle of nowhere. Scott was so great to deal with and Ruby’s are very reasonably priced for what they offer, plus a lovely fireplace inside and beautiful timbers throughout.
What was the inspiration for your wedding?
We had an all-white theme, so everyone joined us in white! It was so much fun. We had vibrant florals and Ruby’s had lovely antique style furniture that made it feel rustic and relaxed. Ruby’s is such a beautiful venue surrounded by nature so that definitely made it feel magical too.
Can you share some of your favourite details about your wedding day?
We had bright pink, red and orange florals that were so vibrant. Our good friend Nik Russo (We Play Records) did an amazing job with the music – it was such a fun party thanks to him.
We love hosting parties and our wedding just felt like one big party with all of our favourite
people. Ruby’s has so many beautiful nooks and nice areas for people to mingle and enjoy. What were the standout memories from your special day
Walking out to see everyone I love and my best friend waiting for me to arrive, that was the most standout memory.
Everyone in white, the beautiful florals and being nestled on a mountain – it was definitely a surreal, pinch me moment. Apart from the ceremony, it was a fun, relaxed vibe. We didn’t do a traditional sit-down meal for dinner, instead we had canapés all night, which allowed everyone to mingle with each other and really enjoy the whole venue.
What does marriage mean to you as a couple?
It means doing everything together as a team, coming back to each other every day to our home in each other supporting, loving and encouraging through all the great and not so great times in our lives. Also being open to the changes that will happen individually and to grow together as a couple.
Do you have some advice that you would give to other couples in planning mode for their big day?
This is a hard one because for all the advice we received leading up to the day, we couldn’t help but stress about some things, and hoped it would live up to our expectations. We kept reminding ourselves the day is about all the special people in our lives coming together to celebrate our journey and our love, so this is the best advice we could give other couples. This is what we remember and love when we reminisce about our wedding day.

What’s trending in wedding world
Need some out of the box ideas for your big day?
Here is a rundown of the latest on-trend concepts to give your guests something to talk about.
WORDS: HAYLEY GRIFFITHS
Espresso Martini Tower
Coffee and cocktails – what a combination!
Get ready to shake up your wedding celebration with this equally entertaining and delicious trend. These towers are the ultimate blend of sophistication and fun, offering a delicious kick of espresso, vodka and coffee liqueur in every sip. Henry
Clive Bar is based on the South Coast in Berry, offering a dapper looking caravan that loves to get the party started. The team can create Espresso Martini Towers, starting from four tiers or more to serve your guests in style. It also makes for stunning photographs.
Gelato
Bike or Van
What’s better than gelato on a wedding day?
Not much we think. Matt from The Gelato Bike agrees, making a business out of an idea for a sweet treat served at weddings. “We designed and had our bikes custom built to be the perfect gelato carts for weddings. Our gelato is made locally by The Dairy Bar in Berry, who use local and fresh ingredients and always deliver the highest quality gelato”, says Matt. This option is popular as a dessert replacement at a reception or even post-ceremony to refuel hungry guests. And the most popular flavours? “We find the go-to flavours at the moment are Belgian Milk Chocolate, Salted Caramel, Rocky Road and either a Mango or Strawberry Sorbet” says Matt. Sounds too hard to choose just one!
Audio Guest Book
Ditch the pen and paper and go for something a little different. Audio guest books are having their moment – an interactive twist that lets your guests leave heartfelt messages and hilarious stories –all recorded for you to cherish forever. Australian vendor Off the Hook offers a range of retro phones to select from, including signage. Once set up at your reception, guests can pick up the phone, hear your personalised greeting and record a voice note for you to listen to after the celebrations. Once you send the phone back to Off the Hook, the team sends you a link to your online voice message gallery – ready for you to download, listen and put on repeat for many years. They also have an option to customise a vinyl or USB box.
Cake Twist
We’ve all seen the usual three-tiered cakes at weddings. How about something out of the box (literally) to make you swoon? Chloe from Willow George Cake Co has been making her gorgeous creations for several years and is the queen of wedding cakes. We asked her what is trending in the cake world – and she delivered. “I’m seeing lots of colour cakes with old fashioned vintage style piping and couples opting for low and wide cakes – like a slab style instead of your usual round cakes”, explains Chloe. So get creative when thinking of your dream wedding cake and don’t forget the taste testing (the best part of wedding planning!).
One-of-a-kind Favours
Personalisation is the name of the game, as couples look to add a more sentimental touch to wedding favours. Consider crafting handwritten notes for each guest as an alternative (tears may be shed) or engrave your initials onto stemless wine glasses for the guests to keep. We’ve also seen customised cocktail napkins trending – from monograms and romantic quotes to small illustrations, it’s a unique idea that will transform a table necessity into a conversation starter and treasured keepsake.
Vintage and Retro
Step into a world of timeless charm and retro vibes with vintage-themed weddings.
These celebrations take you on a journey back in time with an aesthetic that exudes nostalgia and style.
Whether you’re a fan of old-school glamour or retro cool, there is a venue to set the scene with a nod to the past – while looking forward as you start your next chapter as newlyweds.

Classic Snaps
We asked photographer Spencer Dungey from Love of Mine for his top tips on capturing beautiful images of your wedding day – just like he did for David and Jocelyn at their Clifton wedding.
How would you describe your style?
My focus is always on creating the most beautiful photographs possible at a wedding, as opposed to only taking ‘wedding photographs’.
But if you’re looking for buzz words, my style sits somewhere between documentary, editorial and cinematic. My approach simply seeks to make beautiful photographs that reflect the day. How do you capture natural and authentic images?
People are sometimes nervous about having their photo taken – and to be honest; that’s pretty understandable. Photos as a couple, and with your wedding party, should be super relaxed and fun. I’ll usually try to have some music playing, you can have some drinks – it’s really informal.
I really believe that the feeling attached to a photo is more important than the photo itself and the last thing I want is for you to look at a photograph in 20 years and feel anything but warmth and nostalgia. For that reason, I give the
cliche poses a big miss and focus on having you interact as you would normally. What makes for epic ceremony pics?
It’s lovely to see people savouring the moment during their ceremony. It can be quite an emotional part of the day, so while you’re up there, stand together, hold hands, cuddle, kiss –take it all in. You’ll enjoy it so much more when you’re relaxed and sharing the moment together. As you come back down the aisle, remember to stop about halfway for an extra kiss. It’s an epic photo with you surrounded by a tonne of your best buds and confetti falling and people cheering. I love that photo.
When is the best time of day for photos?
Light is important to getting those beautiful photographs, and I recommend setting aside 20 minutes at sunset for a quick wander nearby. The light at sunset is generally nicer and things look just ethereal. It’s such a magical time of day.
For David and Joce, we headed down to Coalcliff beach in the late afternoon. The sun was setting over the escarpment which created a beautiful, filtered light. Very romantic and atmospheric.
What about the celebrations?
There are some great opportunities to take candid photos during the reception when guests are relaxed and ready for some fun. Sit together during your speeches and don’t be afraid to react, laugh, cry – embrace everyone telling you how lovely you both are (and also how you embarrassed yourself that time!)
And when it’s time for dancing, start your playlist with some classic bangers which is sure to get everyone on the dance floor –they make for some of the most memorable photos of the night.
The historic Clifton School of Arts and Imperial Hotel both had lots of interesting features and each venue was quite intimate. Combined with a relaxed couple and exceptional views, we really had all the right ingredients to capture David and Joce on their big day.
Nestled on a clifftop overlooking charming coastal towns and pristine beaches, The Imperial at Clifton offers sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean and the awe-inspiring Illawarra escarpment.
Discover the elegance of Draper & Co, our bespoke event space adorned with dark timber flooring, original brick walls, and breathtaking ocean views. It is a solid mix of style and sophistication with a hint of relaxed coastal vibes.

Katie & Andrew
Wollongong
Art Gallery
How long have you been together?
13 years last December.
Share with us a little about the proposal and how long you were engaged for?
On NYE 2022 Andrew surprised Katie with a ring at midnight after a typical weekend night at home with the kids.
Tell us what made you decide on the location for your wedding?
We chose the Art Gallery for the ceremony as we were looking for something a bit different to what we’ve seen. We knew we wanted something that provided the backdrop without having to add too much styling and being weatherproof was a big selling point.
After picking the Art Gallery, we decided to have lunch at our favourite restaurant, 2 Smoking Barrels, to talk reception ideas and saw a sign about function packages. It was perfect – we know the food there is awesome, and the vibe is exactly us. A short walk between the two through the arts precinct sealed the deal.
What was the inspiration for your wedding? (i.e. theme or overall vibe)
We wanted it to reflect us. Not much fuss and a focus on having a good party. We’re not beachy or garden-y types, so knew we wanted something more urban for the aesthetic. We tried to throw in some retro details in the stationery and colours.
Can you share some of your favourite details about your wedding day?
The photos were exactly what we had envisioned for the vibe – Shannon nailed our brief. Styling was perfect and we loved that it was no fuss on our end – Katie and the team snuck in and out and created the perfect displays – nothing was too hard.
Having sharing style meals was a crowd favourite, as was the food itself. It felt like a big family affair. The big hit was the ‘midnight snack’, where we opted for some delicious hand carved ham with bread and all the trimmings to soak up some of the partying at the end of the night.
What were the standout memories from your special day?
So many! The morning with our families getting ready and sharing in the excitement; having our children involved was more special than we had imagined, they were the stars of the show. Sipping on our signature cocktails, carving up the dancefloor with our favourite people all in the one place and debriefing as a couple on the walk back to our hotel.
What does marriage mean to you as a couple?
It’s solidifies and publicly acknowledges the love and life we have built and continue to build together. We’re not too traditional, hence why it’s taken us this long, but we always knew it was an important step we would take.
Do you have some advice that you would give to other couples in planning mode for their big day?
Wherever financially possible, go for the vendors that make the day of and the lead-up as stress free as possible. We knew we didn’t have the time to spend on a lot of DIY, nor did we want to be rushing around the days before setting things up and having to pack things away after the celebration.
