to yours
As Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Month comes to an end, I want to thank our Coalition friends for their help in informing our community about the real face of homelessness…families, kids, the men and women who come to us for hope. The City of Orlando turned Lake Eola purple, Mayor Dyer proclaimed November 16th Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Day, the Orlando Magic sponsored their 20th Annual Thanksgiving breakfast and carnival, Clear Channel Outdoor provided billboard space, and many of you have continued to donate $10 by texting SERVE to 80100. You have come out in force through these and many other ways noted in this issue. We could not do what we do without you. As we enter the Christmas season, I invite you to help us by signing up online for our Holidays for the Homeless gift-giving tradition. Santa appreciates every elf’s help with ensuring a gift for each family and single adult, like those in the video below, who call the Coalition home. And may I take this opportunity to wish you and your loved ones a very Merry Christmas and Happy Holiday Season.

people magazine’s teacher of the year Jennifer Bohn, a long time Coalition friend, teaches leadership development to at-risk students at Maynard Evans High School. Several times a year, she brings her students to the Coalition to complete various projects – a favorite is decorating Christmas cookies with our children. “Growing up, [decorating cookies] was a tradition my mom created in our home and I realized that the kids at the Coalition may not have the opportunity to create these types of memories. It is so much fun… the kids can showcase their creativity with a yummy treat to enjoy at the end,” Jennifer shared.
i realized that the kids at the coalition may not have the opportunity to create these types of memories.
Working with the Coalition’s children is their main focus, but Jennifer and her students impact all of our residents. Each May, the group makes Mother’s Day baskets for our homeless moms. Also notable, a few years ago, Jennifer’s students interviewed the homeless adults at the Coalition and published a book entitled Everyone Has a Story to Tell. As a result, Disney awarded them with financial support to continue their efforts at the Coalition. With the awarded money, the group created a children’s library. It remains one of our residents’ favorite spots on campus. Deservingly, Jennifer was recently chosen by PEOPLE magazine as one of five Teachers of the Year! We are so grateful to have her and her students on our team.

journey home breakfast
Mayor Buddy Dyer declared November 16, 2012 Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Day in the City of Orlando, so the Coalition hit the streets to let the city know.
On November 13, nearly 400 people joined us for the annual Journey Home Breakfast.
Gathering downtown during rush hour, Coalition staff and friends lined the streets holding cardboard signs to raise awareness about hunger and homelessness. “We got people fighting for us,” exclaimed a homeless gentleman who passed the purpleclothed supporters. Boy was he right!
The morning included inspiring video, song, and CentralFloridaHomeless.org/journeyhome.html testimonials. But above all else, it provided hope for Central Florida’s homeless men, women, and children. As a result of the breakfast, 13 people joined the Coalition’s Journey Home Giving Society and more than $185,000 was raised in one-time gifts and pledges. That’s a record! Thank you to our table captains and their guests, Valencia College Film Production Technology Program, testimonial speaker Angel Sanchez, guest speakers Tim Baker and Alex Martins, the Rosen Centre Hotel, and singer Matt Shenk for making this event a huge success.

thanksgiving
hope for the homeless magic game
For the 20th year, the Orlando Magic provided an unforgettable Thanksgiving morning at the Coalition.
Just one day after providing Thanksgiving festivities at the Coalition, the Orlando Magic continued to offer hope for the homeless.
Magic CEO Alex Martins; senior vice president Pat Williams; coach Jacque Vaughn; players Jameer Nelson, Maurice Harkless, and Glen Davis; and community ambassadors Bo Outlaw and Nick Anderson helped serve more than 800 meals to our neighbors in need. And that was just the beginning.
On November 23, the Amway tower was lit purple in honor of Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Month, and more than basketball was happening inside the arena.
Soon after the 300 dozen eggs, 800 biscuits, and 50 gallons of milk and juice were served, the Magic dance team, the Magic mascot ‘Stuff,’ Power 95.3, and Star 94.5 helped the Coalition celebrate at a carnival enjoyed by all.
The Magic donated $10 from every ticket to the Coalition that night. And at half time, our President/CEO, Brent Trotter, was presented with the Orlando Magic Jersey of Hope! The evening ended with a win for the Magic – and for Central Florida’s homeless men, women, and children!

holidays for the homeless: give a gift
The Coalition provides services to more than 650 men, women, and children every day. This Christmas, we’d like to give all 650 of them at least one gift and one gift card. So put on your Santa hats, Central Florida. We need your help! Sign up online for the Coalition’s 2012 Holiday Gift-Giving by December 10 to make a difference this holiday.
‘pictures of hope’ cards for sale! Back in September, award-winning photojournalist and author Linda Solomon brought “Pictures of Hope” to the Coalition. Linda conducted a photography workshop with 15 Coalition kids, allowing them to capture images of their ‘hopes and dreams.’ Those images are now for sale as greeting cards! Thanks to David Maus Chevrolet, 100% of the proceeds benefit the work of the Coalition! Get yours now.

Charitable Lead Trust: The Basics key tradeoffs
definition by Michael Kovaleski Financial Advisor Raymond James Member Planned Giving Committee Coalition for the Homeless
A charitable lead trust is a trust with both charitable and noncharitable beneficiaries. It is called a lead trust because it is the charity that is entitled to the lead interest in the trust property. After a specified term, the remaining trust property passes to you or another noncharitable beneficiary you designate.
prerequisites
• A desire to donate to charity • A substantial asset to donate to charity
key strengths
For more information: Lisa Hicks VP of Philanthropy 407.872.5791 lisa.hicks@cflhomeless.org
• Provides a gift and estate tax haven for assets expected to appreciate in value • Allows you to donate to charity and keep trust assets within the family • Allows you to postpone the noncharitable beneficiary’s receipt of the trust assets • Allows you to choose the payment method to charity • Does not require any minimum percentage payout to charity • Reduces potential federal estate tax liability

• No income tax deduction unless you are also the “owner” of the charitable lead trust • Requires an irrevocable commitment • Requires the charitable payment to be made each year, regardless of whether there is sufficient trust income available
variations from state to state • Community property states may affect any gift tax due • In certain instances (when the trust document is silent), state law may determine the source of payments made from the trust to charity and the order they are to be used
how is it implemented?
• Consult a legal professional to draft the charitable lead trust document • Select a noncharitable beneficiary, a trustee, and a charitable beneficiary, such as the Coalition • Select the assets you want to use to fund the charitable lead trust • Select an appraiser or other professional to value unmarketable assets • Select the term of the trust and the payment method (annuity or unitrust)
