Cost of Care Survey In March, 2009, CORE conducted a brief survey of the cost of care in residential education. Of the responding CORE member programs (17 programs), 88% base their cost of care on 365 days a year.

Quick Facts:

There are 8760 hours in a year. Youth spend 1080 hours in school in a 180 day school year (180 days * 6hrs) Youth spend 3240 hours out of school in a 180 day school year (180 days * 18hrs) Youth spend 4440 hours through summer and weekends

A residential education program serves youth the majority of the hours above.

Quick Facts: • The approximate expenditure per pupil by the D.C. Public schools is $25,000. • Less than 70% of youth graduate from Washington D.C. Public schools. • Only 9% of Washington D.C. Public School graduates receive a college degree within 5 years of graduation. • President Obama pays $28,442 per child for his girls to attend the prestigious Sidwell Friends School in Washington, DC. Boarding Schools and Residential Treatment Centers programs also have additional costs for clothing, medical care, etc. They offer many options for payment plans and loans. Below are some of the quoted RTC additional fees: • Most do not include medical/dental costs. • Equestrian programs are additional. • Placement fees range from $1000 to $2,750. • Most have guardians maintain a student revolving fund ranging from$400 to $3000. • One‐time gear fee of $1950 per student. • $2500 which includes textbooks, handbooks, uniforms, a welcome basket, and basic assessments. • Ancillary Trip Fee (2nd year) of $4,900. • One‐time, non‐refundable, $6,150 Family & Aftercare Services Fee. • A one‐time alumni fee of $6,200. • $6900 for registration, orientation, admission, parent workshops, all outdoor education experiential trips for students. • Variations to cost if the student has special needs or the parent wants special options.
