eDITOR’S nOTE

A

s summer winds down, I hope everyone has enjoyed the season. As I sat down to write this, I was listening to the radio and heard that our area was hit with heavy rains last night. Someone was hit and killed in a cross walk when the traffic signals were on the red amber flashing cycle. Why didn’t the driver slow down and look for hazards. That incident need not have occurred. It provided me with a topic for this note, “Common Sense”. Fall is coming and on its heels winter will follow, with the dreaded ice, snow, and unpredictable weather. As professional drivers we must adjust to conditions as they present themselves because

we have no choice but to go. The freight must move! That’s where common sense comes in. Let the four wheelers be the risk takers. If we start to adjust ourselves now to future conditions, we will be ready to face them when they hit. If necessary it’s better to shut down in a safe location than to take unnecessary chances. Let’s be smart and let someone else have the inconvenience of a collision. By being prepared, packing your winter gear, slowing down and practicing common sense you can be prepared and avoid the conditions that are soon to come. “Be safe practice common sense”

1-877-914-0001 Recruiter’s Blog

www.transx.com

Hi! My name is Deepak Kapila. I am the driver / owner operator recruiter for Transx. My area of operation is the lower mainland of B.C. I work out of the Transx terminal in New Westminster, B.C. I have extensive knowledge of the transportation industry having spent 10 years on the road as a professional driver.

This experience as a driver helps me to understand the wants and needs of the drivers I talk to. With the operators needs in mind I can assist in the development of traffic lanes that fit the needs and requirements of the operator so as not to compromise the quality of their home time. Being a modern recruiter in some ways is easy I just treat everyone with the respect that I would want. On behalf of Transx I would like to offer the following: -We offer work that is meaningful, engaging and can be approached with passion. -We don’t take applications we take commitments -We at Transx treat our driver’s as front line ambassadors for the company.

Give me a call, join Transx and explore a whole new world of ground transportation.

Canada-U.S. Truck Border Crossing Figures Reveal Surprises

A

new analysis of data shows truck traffic between Canada and the U.S. has declined while it has increased between the U.S. and Mexico. No one in Canada is surprised at these numbers with all the businesses abandoning Ontario due to high energy costs. The Journal of Commerce reports U.S. Transportation Department figures show since the second quarter of 2005, truck crossings between Canada and the U.S. decreased 16 percent but grew 19 percent between the U.S. and its neighbor to the south.

Also, truck crossings at both U.S. borders have increased since 2009, as the level with Mexico approaches what the U.S. has with Canada. It reports in the second quarter of this year, Mexican border truck crossings with the U.S. were up 2.6 percent year-over-year, while crossings at the U.S. Canadian border dropped 1.6 percent. Compared to the first quarter of the year, Canadian truck crossings increased 4.1 percent in the second quarter of 2015, while there was a 5.1 percent jump in June from May after falling in April from May. At Detroit, the second-largest U.S. truck border crossing, truck volumes increased 3.4 percent from the first quarter, according to JOC, but were down 4.6 percent year-over-year. Laredo, TX is the busiest U.S. truck border crossing. Activity there increased 3.9 percent in the second quarter from the first quarter and 4 percent year over year, breaking past the 500,000 truck mark for the first time in the second quarter. There was a similar pattern at Buffalo, NY, the third-largest U.S. port of entry for trucks, when compared to Detroit, where traffic was up 7.6 percent from the first quarter but down 2.4 percent from a year ago. According to JOC, Port Huron, MI, also gained traction, with truck traffic increasing 7.6 percent in the second quarter from the first quarter and 2.3 percent from a year ago. The second quarter improvement was the port’s first consecutive quarterly rise in truck crossings in a year.

he APNA Truck Show 2015 was a great success, breaking all previous records. Even the beautiful sunny weather couldn’t keep the crowds away from the biennial show, which took place at Tradex in Abbotsford, BC on June 13-14. The 2015 show set an all-time record for attendance with over 14,500 attendees, surpassing the previous record set in 2013.

Shelly Hoffman

S

helly Hoffman cannot imagine doing anything else. When she originally proposed the idea of teaming to her husband, she had just been playfully kidding! But there had been no laughter once the laptop was open and they had begun to look into it. At that point, their professional careers ultimately had led them to disappointment, and now, three years later, their CDLs have been more rewarding than their academic degrees combined. Prior to driving professionally, the Hoffmans had discovered travel as their mutual passion. A lucky career move allowed them to move from Cincinnati, their hometown, to Switzerland for a few short years, and that had opened up many possibilities for European travel, and climaxed with a long trip home that took them backpacking through Russia, Mongolia, China, and the U.S., their first time ever seeing their own country in the big picture. Upon returning home to their regular jobs, discontent quietly set in. Following the economic crisis of 2008, traveling professionally was an unobtainable dream. Where was the excitement, the adventure, and the opportunity? Upon discovering the truck team demand, they took the plunge. Once again they were travelers. They started with one of the larger fleets. They were grateful to be hired with no experience, and they trained separately. Three years with a large company, while a fruitful endeavor, it had presented specific challenges. Recently they have moved to a smaller family run operation, M.C. VanKampen, a known classic institution of the industry. “It’s not the same as being on vacation, but we sure do have a lot of fun out here” says Shelly, “a true traveler enjoys seeing Las Vegas, New Mexico as much as Las Vegas, Nevada, but only the truckers get

to see both. In the same day even! Anyone can buy a plane ticket to Boston, sure. But we didn’t have to. Many nights spent in historic downtown Boston after delivering.” For Shelly and her husband, trucking has cultivated a connection with the greater economy of the country. “You get to see the back door of every business in America” Shelly says. “Lately we serve the industries of the Midwest by taking their products to the Pacific Coast, and bring back those West Coast harvests to our local markets. It’s Economics 101, pulled by our Peterbilt!” Through the lens of OTR driving, Shelly sees the immediate demand for safe professional drivers in the U.S. to move things along economically. “There is a lot of pessimism around, but its not for me. People will come around to find that truckers don’t necessarily have to fit a certain stereotype.” Shelly is contributing to an online blog started by her husband, to debunk the misconceptions of truck drivers, and redefine the lifestyle. “Eating healthy is a big part; that part gets talked about a lot. But let’s get a culture rolling, of people getting out of their cabs and taking advantage of all they can while out and about!” Shelly started running to offset the physical effects of so many hours spent sitting while driving. She found encouragement in her sister, an experienced runner, and the Hoffman team has scheduled much of their home time around local races in the Cincinnati area. Recently Shelly received some admiration by a group of roofers working in her neighborhood, as she was running an errand with a large, extended and borrowed Chevrolet 4wd truck. As they inquired about her proficient parking abilities she responded, “This truck? Well, it’s a cute little pickup I guess.”

10 years ago, four of the big companies in Saskatoon set aside their rivalry, sharing a contract with the city; they found they could usually work together and get along. Stratychuk calls it a lesson in the benefits of cooperation: “The contract was market rate; it was fair. It was good for the city—they had 80 trucks they could count on to help when there was an incident. But after five years, they decided that wasn’t going to happen anymore, and they gave it to a company with 12 trucks. So there the police sit for two hours waiting.” Growing and Shrinking Stratychuk has watched the industry’s range of services broaden, along with that of his own business. The scope of Brad’s Towing widened because one job, one service, led to another: • Buying a deck truck to move expensive cars led to moving forklifts, and then stacks of bricks alongside the forklifts. • Brad’s Towing bought a skid steer to clean snow in the yard, then started using it to clean up spilled loads at highway incident scenes. • Being in a farming province, the company moves lot of wide loads such as air seeders and other agricultural equipment. For Stratychuk, that goes with the territory: “If you’re going to live in Saskatchewan, you have to look after the ag[ricultural] section.” • When Brad’s Towing couldn’t always find available pilot trucks to accompany wide loads, the company bought two for its own use, but was soon providing that service to others, too. Stratychuk sees opportunities transferring to towers who persist, as others retire or get fed up and quit. Small-town trucks are vanishing. In the 130 kilometres between Saskatoon and North Battleford, there were eight tow trucks in the 1980s; today there are none. “About 10 years ago, four of the big companies in Saskatoon set aside their rivalry, sharing a contract with the city.” Why do they quit? Stratychuk outlines the reasons one talented and successful Lloydminster tower pulled the plug— labour shortages, careless drivers w

recking equipment and vehicles, and the frustration of being squeezed by the insurance company. He finds it odd that the insurance companies are not alarmed about 30-year veterans pulling the pin and are not worrying about who will provide the service if towers find they cannot afford to stay in business: “I really wish the insurance industry would catch on to that and recognize that there’s a problem there.” Major Challenges One of the biggest challenges facing the towing industry, Stratychuk says, is finding and keeping workers. In Alberta, it is the oil industry that siphons workers away from other industries, but in Saskatchewan, Stratychuk points his finger first at the potash mines. Those industries pay well, and paying a competitive wage in an industry where companies cannot control their revenue is a big challenge. Another major problem is nationwide— there is no watchdog governing the industry. This means that anybody with a tow rope and a half-ton truck can get into the towing business and undercut those who invest in better equipment, pay the fees and insurance, and employ trained people. Stratychuk also lists some other issues that bother him: • loss of control over rates and his company’s future • loss of the work ethic that was common 15 or more years ago (Stratychuk’s own workers excepted!) • unrealistic rules for on-duty time • increasingly unreasonable expectations of the general public: “When you tell them it’ll take 30 minutes to get there and that’s not good enough, that frightens me.” Stratychuk wants mandatory safety inspections for the towing indus-

try. Saskatoon instituted such a program a decade ago. Trucks that had passed inspection flashed window stickers to prove it. The process removed many of the $20-per-tow, fly-by-night trucks and their owners from the road. “That really cleaned up and professionalized the industry,” Stratychuk says. “It only lasted five years. I heard that [managing the program was no longer] in the budget. If I could advocate for anything, it would be for tow truck safety across the country. It levels the playing field.” A Way of Life Operating a tow truck can be challenging, Stratychuk admits. Drivers must have physical strength and be tough enough to endure cold weather. They need a good handle on English and math to write up bills. They face difficult hours and uncertain and variable pay. Still, for the ambitious and energetic, the rewards can balance the lows: “You can decide how much the cheque’s going to be by how much you want to work. We have some staff who are making upwards of $100,000 a year.” “I can’t imagine why people wouldn’t want to do this,” says Stratychuk. “You get to help a lot of people, and there’s a lot of freedom. You’re not chained to a desk all day. If you look at it as a job, it will never pay enough. It’s more of a way of life that you can make a living at. I would advise younger people to find the 20 or 30-year people and find out what drives the passion they have to stay at it. If you can find what kept them at it for so long, you can have a hell of a good life. I say it often—I don’t believe I’ve worked a day in my life.” Early on, others gave Stratychuk an opportunity and steered him in the right direction. He expresses his gratitude through volunteer work in the community, be it pulling kids’ floats or helping with Folk Fest. Stratychuk advocates for honesty. He wants customers to want to call him back: “We try to be fair. You need to have a longer term view.” He also espouses respect for others and taking an interest in them: “We’re all here together. Why not be a human being?” ---------------------- Courtesy: Tow Canada Gary Lund
