eDITOR’S nOTE

We’re speeding towards the end of another year, and hope everyone had a successful year. Along with yearend we have the dreaded winter and the unpredictable conditions that go with it. In Alberta we got a taste of winter in September and no one was prepared. In a 24-hour period we got a large dump of snow and there were 270 plus reported collisions. I find that figure astounding. We know winter comes every year so be prepared, adjust your driving habits to driving to conditions, remind yourself of the different winter driving skills you will need and, above all else, pack a survival kit in case your storm stayed on the highway. I have trouble understanding the news reports when it is suggested that the highway caused the collision. I don’t know of a highway that drives!

I have recently read many articles about recruiting and retention. This is a complex issue for which there is no easy solution. My suggestions are to tap the untapped markets - for example women and the retiring military. We need to continue to promote our industry to the younger generation, and continue to lobby governments to recognize motor transport operators as viable professionals. To a simplistic example: when you go fishing, if the fish aren’t biting do you quit or do you change bait and try again? I look at recruiting and retention the same way. What may not work today might work tomorrow. We have to be innovative and continue to try different things. Good luck in your hunt.
