W

ith the Holiday Season quickly approaching, it’s time to look back at a great 2016. It’s been a busy year for the automotive and motorsports industries, with some pretty amazing models being newly released and/or given some amazing refreshes. Speaking of amazing, you’ll find two young professionals on the cover of the magazine – they are Robbie Johal and Mike Marfori, two top real estate professionals in the Surrey area. Both Robbie and Mike are good friends who have worked together to help each other grow. And of course, both love cars and have their own personal favourites. Read their stories in this issue’s feature. JGK Media is happy to announce the launch of our newly refreshed and updated website at www.rackandopinion.ca, where you will find the latest in automotive/motorsports news, reviews, events and more. Very soon, a blog will be added to keep you updated with more day to day activities. In this issue of DRK Magazine, we have reviews of the 2017 Honda Ridgeline, 2016 Lexus RX, 75th Anniversary edition of the Jeep Wrangler, and a first look at the 2017 Volvo V90 Cross Country. We also take a look at our top favourites of our 2016 Quick Looks. As the weather changes, make sure to keep your vehicle in good running condition. Snow tires are highly recommended because they provide much more traction than all-seasons. Spend the money on snow tires and trust me, you won’t regret it. Make sure you visit www.rackandopinion.ca and like our Facebook page at www.Facebook.com/DRKMagazine. From our family to yours, have a great Holiday Season and for 2017, we wish you peace, prosperity and happiness.

Abbotsford Collision Wins Top Award for Western Canada

C

ARSTAR 360 Abbotsford has been awarded the highest honors in its organization. At the CARSTAR North America gala event, held in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, CARSTAR 360 Abbotsford received the President’s Award, naming the family owned organization the top CASTAR collision shop in Western Canada (under $8 million). “We’re thrilled,” says CARSTAR 360 Abbotsford President Rick Francoeur. “CARSTAR is one of North America’s largest and most respected collision organizations, and to be named as the top shop in our class in Western Canada is a tremendous honor and the result of years of hard work by our team. CARSTAR is a first

class organization and to be singled out from such an amazing group of best in class shops is really gratifying.” CARSTAR is the recognized leader in the industry of automobile repair, with over 400 centers across North America.

ransport Canada says new cars and small trucks will have to be equipped with rear-view camera systems starting in May 2018. The new regulations have been formally posted in the Canada Gazette for a 75-day comment period. The requirement for back-up visibility brings Canadian standards in line with those in the United States. The department says it’s a safety measure because children, disabled persons, the elderly and others are vulnerable to backup mishaps. It estimates that such accidents killed 27 people and injured more than 1,500 from 2004 to 2009. The new requirement applies to new light vehicles, including passenger cars, light trucks, three-wheelers and small vans and buses. “This helps children be seen and provides Canadians with one of the best safety technology systems to reduce back-over collisions,” Transport Minister Marc Garneau said in a statement. The United States made a similar announcement in 2014, with a 2018 deadline for compliance. “The objective of this proposal is to align the Canadian and United States safety regulations, to provide Canadians with the same level of protection under the law related to back-over crashes offered to residents of the United States and to satisfy vehicle manufacturers’ call to eliminate regulatory differences between Canada and the United States,” Transport Canada said.

Volkswagen Unveils the 2018 Atlas

Nissan Jumps Into Hyper-Drive With New 2017 Nissan Rogue

N

T

he 2018 Volkswagen Atlas, unveiled tonight on the Santa Monica Pier at the end of historic Route 66, launches a new chapter in the company’s American history. Built in Tennessee, the seven-passenger Atlas offers class-competitive levels of technology and spaciousness combined with hallmark Volkswagen driving dynamics and attention to detail, all at a price designed to draw customers’ attention in the family SUV segment. Engineered from Volkswagen’s award-winning Modular Transverse Matrix (MQB) architecture, the Atlas draws on the latest Volkswagen design DNA to create a bold new look in the SUV segment. At 198.3 inches long, 77.9 inches wide, and 69.6 inches high, Atlas is larger than any other Volkswagen on sale in the U.S., yet it retains classic proportions and clean lines that create a sense of timelessness and precision. Up front, standard LED headlights and LED Daytime Running Lights combine for a unique visual signature, with optional LED taillights to complete the look. Inside, the Atlas makes maximum use of its dimensions to offer space for seven adults and their luggage. The third-row can be easily reached by an innovative folding seat solution, one that works even with child seats installed in the second row. Simple, driver-centric displays enhance the feeling behind the wheel rather than distracting from it; while the available Volkswagen Digital Cockpit allows drivers to reconfigure how they view vehicle information. The Atlas arrives with a choice of two powertrains: the 2.0-liter turbocharged and direct-injection TSI® four cylinder with 238 horsepower or the available 3.6-liter VR6 engine with 280 horsepower. Either engine routes power through an eight-speed transmission to help maximize engine efficiency, and the Atlas can be configured either as front-wheel-drive or with available 4Motion all-wheel-drive in VR6 trims. The 4Motion system has a Driving Mode Selection feature that allows the driver to select specific parameters based on driving conditions. EPA fuel economy estimates will be released ahead of the launch in the Spring of 2017. The Atlas is built alongside the Passat at the Volkswagen Chattanooga assembly plant, the result of an additional $900 million investment by Volkswagen in the facility. The Chattanooga plant is the only automotive manufacturing facility in the world to receive Platinum certification by the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) program. 8

issan today announced it will produce a limitedvolume version of its newly revised Rogue compact SUV, the “2017 Nissan Rogue: Rogue One Star Wars Limited Edition” for the U.S. and Canadian markets. Also previewed was special badging, designed by Lucasfilm, which will have prominent placement on the new “Rogue One Star Wars Limited Edition”. The vehicle makes its global debut at the 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show in November. The film, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, opens on December 16th. “The Star Wars film franchise has pushed the boundaries of technology since the debut of the original episode nearly 40 years ago. Nissan is doing the same with our industryleading cars, trucks and SUVs – so it’s natural that we join forces,” said Jeremy Tucker, vice president, Marketing Communications and Media, Nissan North America, Inc.

Another Big Change For The Richmond Auto Mall It's the end of an era at the Richmond Auto Mall. The building that once housed Auto Mall visionary Ray Dennison's Dennison Chevrolet is coming down to make way for a brand new OpenRoad Toyota store. It was Ray Dennison who first saw the innovative 'Auto Mall' concept in 1981 while vacationing in Carslbad, California, and who invited the other founders to take a look and explore a similar idea in Richmond, BC. The Richmond Auto Mall opened in 1985 with nine (soon to be 10) dealerships on 23 acres including the state-of-the-art Dennison Chevrolet, constructed on the corner of Smallwood and Jacombs Road, bordered by Westminster Highway. Ray retired in late 2010 selling the building to the OpenRoad Group as the future home for Toyota. The location has another warm and fuzzy claim to fame. It was the home base of the Auto Mall's rabbit rescue project, Rabbitats, from its origins in late 2011 through to mid 2014, as they rounded up and relocated the hundreds of feral domestic rabbits and their offspring who had been unwisely calling the Auto Mall home. The building's six-bay service garage hosted dozens of furry little critters in a specially constructed (and super cute) 'rabbit village'. (The rescue project still exists on a smaller scale in another part of the Auto Mall). Rabbitats will be reconstructing a mini-rabbit village and staging a final garage sale at the location on Saturday, October 8th from 11 am to 3 pm. The wrecking ball will be rolled in the following week.

Mercedes-Benz Canada Appoints Nicolette Lambrechts as Vice-President of Mercedes-Benz Vans

M

ercedes-Benz Canada announced today that Nicolette Lambrechts will take over the role of Vice-President of Mercedes-Benz Vans effective January 1, 2017. The position was previously held for more than four years by Pablo de la Peña, who recently returned to Mercedes-Benz España. The Vans division began operating in 2010, when Mercedes-Benz dealers were given the opportunity to sell the world-renowned and award-winning Sprinter Passenger Vans, Cargo Vans and Cab Chassis across the country. This globally-proven brand of commercial vehicles has been an extremely successful addition to the dealers’ overall business. Last year, the division introduced the unique Sprinter 4x4 Passenger and Cargo Vans as well as the ultrapractical midsize Metris Passenger and Cargo Vans. More than 23,000 Sprinter and Metris Vans have been sold in Canada since 2010. Nicolette Lambrechts is a native of South Africa. Since January 2014, she has been Managing Director of the Vans Division at Mercedes-Benz South Africa, where she has led her team to consistently surpass targets and has built a strong relationship with the local dealer network. She joined Daimler in 2001 as a Graduate Trainee and has held numerous roles such as Sales Planner for Chrysler Jeep, and Distribution Manager for Commercial Vehicles, National Sales Manager, and Brand Manager

for Mercedes-Benz Vans in South Africa. She holds Bachelor of Commerce degrees in Marketing and Economics from the University of Pretoria. President and CEO of Mercedes-Benz Canada, Brian D. Fulton said, “While Mercedes-Benz only started to market and sell vans in Canada in 2010, we have seen significant growth over the last six years. During that time, our Sprinter and Metris Vans have received numerous Total Cost of Ownership and Best Residual Value awards. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Pablo and his team for the impressive infrastructure that has been built so far. I am very pleased to be welcoming Nicolette to this position. She brings with her many years of van-related knowledge and has experience that will undoubtedly help us sustain the strong momentum we have seen to date.” “I am terribly excited to be making this career move to Canada,” said Nicolette Lambrechts. “Not only does Mercedes-Benz Canada have a reputation for excellence on many fronts, I am looking forward to working closely with a great team of individuals, many of whom I have met over the years at global vans conferences. The exponential growth in sales numbers and the sound operational organization that has been put into place since the brand was introduced in Canada are truly impressive. I am very eager to combine the best practices that I have been exposed to in various markets throughout Africa, and to further grow the business in my newly-appointed area of responsibility.”

Robbie Johal

Personal Real Estate Corporation

Y

ou would think with a black Pontiac Firebird Trans-Am from the 1970’s, I’m a big fan of the Burt Reynolds’ movie, Smokey and the Bandit. Here’s a surprise though; I’ve never seen the movie! Burt had a 1977 model and I own a 1979, the same year I was born in Surrey, BC to hardworking immigrant parents. My dad drove a truck and my mom, who has since passed, was a seamstress. From a young age, my parents taught me that honesty, integrity, and good work ethic are important in life, principles that have stuck with me until now. After careers in the banking, insurance, and retail sectors, in 2006 I landed a career in which I could combine my two passions: driving and real estate. Since the first day, I loved driving in my cars and showing homes. In the highly competitive real estate business, it took me a couple of years to experience success, but since then, I’ve never looked back. Anyone who has known me will tell you that I’ve always loved cars. Walking home from school in the late 1980’s, one particular muscle car, with a gold phoenix on its hood, always caught my attention. It was the coolest car I had ever seen and this car would occupy my mind for years – the Pontiac Trans Am.

12

NOVEMBER / DECEMBER 2016

My first cars were Hondas and Acuras, which I modified to enter competitions like Driven to Perform and the Auto Import Showoff. That, of course, was when I was in my twenties, single and with no kids. Fast forward ten years and along came my beautiful wife, four great kids, and four door mini-vans and SUV’s. Last year, while talking to my Uncle Gord, who owns A & B Transmission, he mentioned that a friend of his was selling a ’79 Trans Am. Could this be the mythical phoenix-adorned car that I dreamed about owning since I was a kid? I set up an appointment and took the Trans Am for a test drive. Within a couple of minutes, I drove it straight to my office, wrote a cheque and bought my dream muscle car. Everyone knows that a muscle car must have power. My Trans Am initially had only 185 hp, the same as my first Civic. As they tell Scotty in Star Trek, I told my Uncle, “She needs more power!” I handed him the keys and he got started. First, a 6.2L LS3 376ci carbureted crate motor from GM, producing approximately 515 hp, was dropped into the car. The shaker was kept fully functional. Next came a set of 18” YearOne Cast Snowflake rims and 285/40/18 Michelin tires. To stop this heavy beast on a dime, 13” BAER Claw cross drilled 4-wheel disc brakes were added. Hotchkis sub-frame connectors were installed to keep the T-top car steady with the added power. Since my car sometimes becomes a second office, it needs to be comfortable. Apart from the gauges, nothing from the old interior remains. There’s custom leather bucket seats with hobnail pattern inserts, Alcantara suede headliner, new glass, seatbelts, steering wheel, and dash trims. And what office is complete without amazing sound? An Alpine head unit, which is concealed in the glove box, is perfectly matched to high end speakers and two 10” JL subwoofers. The original stock cassette deck is still displayed in the dash, to keep the classic look. Cars have evolved over the years, but quality and workmanship always separate the great ones from the average ones. It’s the same with my career; this year, I am again honoured to be one of the top 1% of real estate professionals in the area, and that as a Single Agent, selling over 100 homes in 2016! I am a REMAX Hall of Fame and REMAX Lifetime Achievement Award 2016 recipient, and a 10 Time Medallion Club member. This is because I don’t sell homes, but rather help home buyers purchase their dreams, and because of this, most of these home buyers become my friends. And since I understand what it feels like to be a young first-time home buyer, I help put clients’ minds at ease during the buying process. My parents had taught me the importance of giving back to the community. Thus, each year, I sponsor the Robbie Johal Entrepreneur Scholarships, where two grade 12 students receive $1000 each. I’ve received the honour of being the #1 donator to BC Children’s Hospital from REMAX Langley; a portion of every home sale is also donated to the Children’s Miracle Network. Finally, I sponsor the Clayton Haunted House because after all, it’s about the community. There’s something about a classic car that cannot be explained. Apart from being an amazing machine, my Trans Am is a great ice-breaker. Every day, I engage in a conversation with an admirer of the car, with our smiles stretching ear to ear. Even home buyers are put at ease by just talking about the car, with business being the furthest thing from our minds. Next time you hear a loud Trans Am with a phoenix on the hood, you’ll know that your friendly neighbourhood professional is here, taking care of all your home buying and selling needs.

hat can I say except that I love sales, and always have! Since graduating from high school, sales was my passion and it’s because I want to give customers the best service possible. My other passion is cars and I’m proud to say that I’ve been able to spoil myself with some great toys. I was born December 4, 1985 and raised in the Fleetwood area of Surrey. I started my first job in telemarketing. Yes, I was that guy on the phone calling you to switch your long distance calling plan to something better. After being on the phone for two years, I was ready to sell in person! I began selling wireless phones and plans in the mall. Soon after, I graduated from phones to cars. I was a salesperson at Surrey Honda and OpenRoad Honda for six years. The best part of selling cars was meeting great people every day and getting them into a vehicle that suited their needs. The bonus was that I could be around cars all day. As far back as I can remember, automobiles have infatuated me since I was a kid. In my younger years, I drooled over imports. Next, I fell in love with Porsche and Aston Martins. Moving forward a few years, it was Ferrari and now, Lamborghini. Even though I’ve fallen in love with, and owned many cars, I think the Lamborghini brand is what reflects my personality the best. After being in the auto sales industry for some years, I attended UBC to obtain my Real Estate license. In November 2011, I became an official Real Estate agent in the Surrey area, specializing in Fleetwood and Guildford. I didn’t want to be an average real estate agent; I was hungry and wanted to establish myself among the best of the best. In my first year, I sold 12 homes; it’s not bad for a young rookie, but I wanted more. With some creative marketing and hard work, I went on to sell 36 homes in my second year, followed by a staggering 65 homes my third year. Last year in 2015, I sold a whopping 163 homes in one calendar year! That ranked me at #2 out of 2800 realtors in the Fraser Valley. Currently in 2016, I have already sold 190 homes up to November, and there’s no slowing

14

down my momentum! I’ve still got another month and a half to break some records. Since I’ve been successful in the real estate business, I’ve purchased some great cars. Two of the most notable cars I’ve had are a 2010 Porsche Cayenne GTS and a 2015 Porsche 911 GTS; that is until I got into supercars. In November 2014, I purchased a black 2010 Ferrari 458 ITALIA with yellow calipers and she was a beauty. Everything changed when I got my first Lamborghini, a 2017 Huracan Spyder LP 610-4. This Lambo was personalized inside and out, from the color choices of the custom verde green interior with Alcantara suede lining throughout to the brake calipers and subtle touches in exterior accents. I customized everything and loved this car because it was a marvel. Even though it’s a supercar, I could literally drive it every day because it was functional, well, for me anyways. Especially exhilarating was the lifting system for the front lip. Within 17 seconds, the top hid and the car became a Spyder, for an even more adrenaline piercing experience with the naturally aspirated V10 singing in your ears! My newest precious is a Lamborghini Aventador Roadster LP700-4. I acquired this stunning piece of machinery on October 28, 2016 where it basically fell into my lap. I received a call from my Lamborghini representative letting me know that this Blu Nethuns (custom color) with carbon fiber everything had just landed. The Aventador was complete with over $130,000 in additions to its stock options. I made my decision to consolidate my supercar collection by trading in both my Ferrari 458 and my Lamborghini Huracan Spyder for this ULTIMATE supercar! This naturally aspirated V12 is an insane beast with over 700 horsepower. This, by far, is my favorite supercar! On a daily basis, you can see me in my 2016 Range Rover Autobiography Sport SC. I’m supercharged as a Fraser Valley Real Estate Medallion recipient in 2014, 2015, and 2016, as well as a Platinum, Masters and Million Dollar Award recipient. Everything I do is supercharged, so naturally I expect my cars to keep up with me!

ail, Colorado: At this altitude (12,000 feet), the air is crisp and thin. Simple things like a brisk walk now are a chore and who would have thought I would have a quick bout of altitude sickness. Add to that a 30-minute head-bobbing drive, in a Volvo V60 CC, through a rutted dirt road fit for a rally race. My driving partner, Alan Taylor, who just completed a Baja race a couple of months ago, didn’t hold back in making sure my breakfast was kept on edge. But what awaited us at Piney Lake Ranch was simply breath-taking. In the past few years, Volvo has completely turned around their game and built some amazing vehicles. Take for example, the XC90, winner of a multitude of awards. Then there’s the new S90, their flagship sedan that is sure to make quite the impact. Now, Volvo launches the all-new member to the Cross Country family, the V90 Cross Country. The V90 16

NOVEMBER / DECEMBER 2016

Cross Country takes the V90 and transforms it into an all-road vehicle that rivals the likes of the E-wagon. The all-new V90 Cross Country is built, and suited, for the North American environment. It’s rugged, capable, and matches the lifestyle of Canadians (and those in Vail as well, of course). According to Volvo’s Senior Designer Tisha Johnson, “The V90 Cross Country is the car you want to drive when you really want to connect with nature.” Featuring a ground clearance of 21 cm and a raised ride height, this vehicle will make sure you get to your destination, whether city, country, or mountainside. “Everything about the V90 Cross Country is purpose built for making sure all passengers get to where they want,” continued Johnson. “The new tires are both softer and rounder than what you see on the V90.” Even the cladding, which can be left in black or colour-matched to the car, is perfectly suited as it’s tougher and able to handle off-road bumps and

Jag Dhatt jag@jgkmedia.ca

2017 Volvo V90 Cross Country bruises. Speaking of off-road, the optimized chassis and new raised suspension setup ensure a smooth ride for occupants of the V90 CC. Even if you’re not a fan of wagons, the V90 Cross Country will impress, thanks to beautiful design elements and great lines. One of the best views of the V90 CC has to be the rear; most wagons have a difficult time balancing the rear tail light cluster into the body, but Volvo has mastered the art and made the V90 CC one of the sexiest wagons around. The interior of the V90 CC continues to showcase Scandinavian beauty and elegance. Like the V90 wagon, it’s pure luxury and according to Johnson, “it’s where you want to connect with yourself.” Beautifully stitched leather, elegant wood inserts and state-of-theart technology surround the occupants. For audiophiles, a Bowers & Wilkins sound system will make all the drives more pleasurable. And of course, with Volvo, you have the best in safety, strength, and security, which is no surprise to anyone. For Canada, the V90 Cross Country will be available only with the T6 setup. The 2.0 liter all-aluminum supercharged and turbocharged four-cylinder engine will pump out 316 horsepower and 295 lbft of torque, sending power to Volvo’s most advanced Haldex allwheel drive through eight speeds. I’ve driven the same engine and

transmission setup in the S90 and can attest that the car will have enough power. In today’s world, you don’t need a V8 or V6 and Volvo’s four-cylinder is proof of this. With a starting price of $61,900 the 2017 Volvo V90 Cross Country is a very attractive option for those looking at a capable,

luxury all-road vehicle. I would say it would rival the E-wagon, with a much more attractive price plan. The new V90 Cross Country will arrive in Canada the first quarter of 2017.

Jaguar’s “The Art of Performance Tour”

Jaguar’s “The Art of Performance Tour”

P

itt Meadows, BC: These days, buying a vehicle is probably the second biggest investment for most people. After the deal is done, hands shaken, insurance bought, buyers get a quick review of the features of the vehicle…and that’s usually about it. If you’re buying a luxury vehicle, there’s often a little more time spent with new owners. However, some manufacturers make it a point to take clients, current and potential, on closed circuits to really show what their vehicles can do. When the F-Pace was launched last year, it was put through one

of the most daring challenges; if you saw the video (it’s still on YouTube), the F-Pace did a 360-degree loop, and it was spectacular. In case you need to be told, here’s a disclaimer – if you have an F-Pace, don’t try it…well, unless you have a tested, engineered loop on your acreage. Last week, as both a Jag owner and media, I was invited by Jaguar Canada on their cross-country “Art of Performance” Tour. Jaguar Land Rover doesn’t just want to sell you a vehicle; they want you to enjoy it for all its worth. There’s times when I want to open up my Jaguar and let the cat just purr; but then the thought of the boys in blue giving me a nice ticket throws a wrench in my idea. Thankfully, the “Art of Performance Tour” allowed me to push some Jaguars and Range Rovers to their limits. The “Art of Performance Tour” has four components: a slalom course with the XE and F-Type Coupe R; a Smart Cone course that tests your driving abilities; an F-Pace drive course; and finally, a Range Rover hydraulic-based agility test. The Jaguar XE is the newest vehicle added to the line-up and it stacks up nicely Jag Dhatt to the competition, mainly the Benz C300 jag@jgkmedia.ca and BMW 3-series. The F-Type Coupe R is 20

a monster of a car that delivers amazing performance. Driving both of these through a slalom course gave two different experiences, for obvious reasons of course. Even though the front end setup is the same for both vehicles, the F-Type Coupe R just rocketed through the course. I thought my driving was pretty good until a professional driver humbled me, lowering my (driving) self-esteem down to the size of a peanut. Next up, the Smart Cone driving challenge. Most drivers think that the faster you go, the better the score; but for this challenge, drivers had to command a XE through a course by paying attention to which green gates were going to open next. Points were given for driving accuracy, speed, and total distance travelled. I faired pretty good, and much better than one private driver who hit many a Smart Cone and screeched tires all over. Component three matched drivers with the new F-Pace, a great looking SUV that Jaguar emphasizes is performance oriented. Our fleet of F-Paces was equipped with the S-package, which gives bigger wheels and tires, more power, and some other interior and exterior upgrades. Whilst going through the course, I noticed the responsive steering and good amount of power. It’s safe to say that Jaguar’s first SUV will have solid sales numbers. I’ve saved the next segment for last and for good reason. Land Rover has always expressed that their vehicles are not just capable, but very capable. However, not many Range Rovers will find their way to the kinds of environment for which they were built. But if you had to, boy are you in good hands. The course for the Range Rover took us through a PNE-styled hydraulic ride that showcased the SUV’s crawling abilities when encountering extreme approach and decline angles. Put the vehicle in automatic mode and you don’t need to press the gas or brake peddles – the Range Rover does everything for you. Honestly, it was quite the experience. Immediately after, the Range Rover crawled through a platform that teetered, yet balanced, the SUV on two wheels. And, if needed, during your outdoor adventures, the Rover is fully sealed for traversing water depth of up to 33.5 inches, while keeping the luxury interior nice and dry. For many drivers, the daily commute isn’t one that raises the eyebrows or gets the adrenaline pumping. It’s usually the same schedule: drive to work, come home, take kids to soccer practice, and on the occasional weekend, take a trip…and repeat. Vehicles nowadays, although treated as utilitarian, have much more capabilities that are never experienced. Land Rover Jaguar builds some of the best vehicles in the world and if you ever need to experience what they are really capable of, sign up for an “Art of Performance” Tour. If this is not possible, the manufacturer has many other drive experiences that really put you in the driver’s seat – you’ll be glad you did. I know I was.

All-new 2017 Chrysler Pacifica Named Top Safety Pick+

T

he 2017 Chrysler Pacifica has earned a rating of Top Safety Pick+ for 2016 from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).** The achievement marks yet another minivan milestone for FCA US LLC, which pioneered the segment more than 30 years ago. “Having sold more than 14 million minivans since inventing the segment in 1983, we know what’s important to minivan buyers,” says Tim Kuniskis, Head of Passenger Car Brands – FCA North America. “The 2017 Chrysler Pacifica is the sum of all the knowledge we’ve accumulated about minivans and the people who are proud to own them. Among the things we know – safety is one of the most important purchase reasons and achieving the Top Safety Pick+ rating helps to establish Pacifica as the segment leader.” While the all-new Pacifica achieves top scores for crashworthiness, the best safety features are those that help drivers avoid collisions. The Chrysler Pacifica’s Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) system earns a rating of “superior,” the highest possible grade that IIHS awards for this technology. The Pacifica’s system is called Forward Collision Warning-Plus. It features sensor-fusion technology, which combines the particular attributes of radar sensors and cameras for greater precision. The system only responds when camera and radar agree that a frontal impact appears imminent.

NOVEMBER / DECEMBER 2016

System response comprises audible and visual driver warnings and/or AEB. No other minivan features sensor-fusion technology; competitive systems employ either cameras or radar sensors. Sensor-fusion, once reserved for luxury-segment vehicles, is the technology of choice at FCA US, says Mike Dahl, Head of Vehicle Safety and Regulatory Compliance. “As AEB capability proliferates across our vehicle lineup, we are committed to using sensor-fusion technology,” Dahl says. “It is a significant stepping stone in our exploration of autonomous-vehicle development, the next horizon for occupant safety.”

EATING WITH PASH-ION

W

hen I first heard that Guns N’ Roses was reuniting for a tour, I was ecstatic. Then I found out they were not coming to Vancouver, and the nearest show was Seattle, WA. At first I was upset that I had to compete against BC, Washington and Oregon fans for tickets, but then I remembered my treasured steakhouse in downtown Seattle, The Metropolitan Grill! A chance to party with Axl Rose and Slash, AND eat a great meal! I scored tickets on the floor thanks to a client and great friend who had first access at tickets for the show. With my tickets set, I made my reservation to “The Met”. I ate at The Metropolitan Grill once before and knew how to navigate the menu with maximum satisfaction. Rule 1: Ignore the appetizer menu. The appetizers are much too large and fill you up quickly. So lesson learned from the past; abort the appetizers. Rule 2: You MUST make reservations. If I had not made a reservation, I would never have gotten a table. Mind you I was dressed like Axl Rose as well, and that would have gotten me a quick escort to the exit door. 400 people from the Guns N’ Roses show tried to get a table without a reservation, so if you didn’t already have a reservation or your name was Slash, you were NOT getting a table. Rule 3: Order the BEST steak you can afford. For me the focus was on the Wagyu beef. Not just any Wagyu, but the real Wagyu from Japan. Wagyu means Japanese cow. Focus on the word Japanese. You see, there are types of Wagyu beef. There is an American version from Snake River Farms in Idaho. This is NOT a Japanese cow in

Japan, so no thanks. I came for the REAL thing and not some inferior watered down American version. I had two choices, Ohmi beef and Snow Beef. Both are from Japan, but Snow Beef is extremely rare and only two U. S. Restaurants offer it. Only one or two cattle heads are harvested a month of Snow Beef, and unfortunately they were sold out of Snow Beef. I was crushed and settled for the Ohmi, but was not disappointed. It was one of the best things I have ever put in my mouth! Rule 4: Focus on the meat. Real Wagyu beef is unlike any steak you have eaten. It is so tender a fork can cut it and it literally melts like butter in your mouth. Savour every mouthful and close your eyes as you chew it to get the full experience. Don’t slather this meat in hot sauces or other such trivialities. Just lose yourself in the meat. Rule 5: Don’t over order heavy filling drinks or side dishes. One simple side like garlic mashed potatoes is enough with some seasonal veggies. Drinks like beer are going to fill you up too fast. Indulge in these AFTER you have finished your meat. Don’t leave any meat on your plate or it is just blasphemy. Rule 6: Dessert must be shared. The Metropolitan Grill has great desserts, and they are huge portions. I had white chocolate coconut cake and it was monstrous. They had a much larger nine layer chocolate cake which apparently is big enough to feed the Seahawks, so just share one dessert for the entire table. Rule 7: Don’t forget your wallet. The bill is going to be hefty. The Metropolitan Grill is a big treat for special occasions. So if you can afford to splurge, I strongly encourage it. There are photos of famous celebrities adorning the walls who have dined at The Met. Sports stars and local celebrities are known to frequent it on a regular basis as well. The wait staff are impeccable. They are dressed in white dinner coats and have excellent manners and dining knowledge. The service is A class. The wine menu and bar menu are also excellent. But the shining star and what makes this restaurant one of the best in all of America, is their pioneering beef program. From the cuts, to the dry aging and the real Wagyu melt in your mouth beef, they cannot be beat. If you are ever in Seattle and have the opportunity to dine at this fine establishment, I suggest you don’t pass it up. It’s a night out you will always keep fond memories of. Or if you like, you can also enjoy lunch or have their lunch delivered! NOVEMBER / DECEMBER 2016

2016 Toyota Tacoma

T

oyota trucks have always been known to be able to take a beating and keep on ticking, or moving if you must. For 2016, the refreshed Tacoma wears a new skin and has an interior that is second to none in this competitive class. On the outside, the Tacoma looks bulkier than before, but don’t let that fool you as it hasn’t grown much in height or width. The front end now has new projector headlamps and depending on the package, LED lights are available. Inside the Tacoma, you’ll be amazed at the changes. Taking notes from its bigger brother, the Tundra, the cabin is very well done. The biggest change, however, with the Tacoma is new power plant; a base four-cylinder is available, but a more powerful 3.5L V6 replaces the outgoing 4.0L. Using the Atkinson cycle on demand, fuel efficiency ratings are pretty good. In my initial drive of the Tacoma, the truck felt familiar, but more improved and refined. The cabin is much quieter as well. Offroad tests will be done in my extended drive, but for now, I’m giving this one a thumbs up!

2017 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350

ince the early 1960’s, Carroll Shelby has been building and modifying performance cars for Ford, most notably the AC Cobra and the Mustang Shelby GT350. Although it wasn’t a Shelby, who could forget Eleanor, the famous 1967 GT350 from the year 2000 hit movie “Gone in 60 Seconds”. Speed up to 2017 and be ready to be blown away by the new Shelby. The heart of the 2017 Shelby is in the 5.2L V8 engine with a flat-plane crank that churns out 526 hp. The motor is matched to a worldclass TREMEC 3160 6-speed manual transmission that gives an amazing 429 lb-ft. of torque. I’ve had the press car for only 2 days and let me tell you, this is what a true muscle car is all about. If you thought that the 5.0 V8 was fast, this takes power and speed to another level. The MagneRide Damping System monitors and adjusts itself thousands of times per second, giving a phenomenal ride and control. Brembo calipers are used to make sure you stop this pony on a dime. And of course, adorning this beauty of a vehicle is Shelby GT350 badging. 24

hen I say that today’s Cadillacs aren’t the ones your grandfather used to drive, you better believe it. The brand is pitching more and more towards the younger market and with its V-lineup, it’s making quite an impact. Borrowing from the success of its older sibling, the CTS-V, the new ATS-V delivers quite the oomph, and is now focused at dethroning Germany’s top sport sedans. Powered by a 3.6L V6 that pumps out 464 hp, the ATS-V has 39 more ponies that the BMW M3. According to Cadillac, this Caddy will get to 60mph in under 4 seconds; that’s fast enough to get most enthusiasts’ hearts pumping. In addition to the enormous power, the ATS-V also has Magnetic Ride Control adaptive dampers, that provide excellent stability and composure during those hot laps. Standard equipment includes a carbon fibre hood, 18” wheels, Brembo brakes, sport suspension, adjustable driving modes, dual zone climate control and a bunch of other luxuries you’d expect. The ATS-V does compromise rear seating room and trunk space, but hey, this isn’t meant to be a true family sedan.

2016 Audi TT Coupe

f you see the new Audi TT Coupe, you may be slightly disappointed because there’s so much resemblance to the last generation. But Audi believes that if it ain’t broke, why fix it? The new TT is much more streamlined, has a lower roofline, but still maintains the Bauhaus style, which I personally admire. The broader Singleframe grille creates a stronger, sportier face, complete with headlights that are inspired by the focused eye of an athlete. Overall, this new generation makes a bold first impression that the last TT didn’t. If not much has changed on the outside, the interior will be mesmerizing, especially the new virtual cockpit, which transforms the traditional analog gauges into a completely digital experience with full integration of all driver and vehicle systems. Under the hood, the light and powerful 2.0L TFSI engine produces 220 hp and 259 ft-lbs of torque, all of which go to the Quattro permanent drive system. According to Audi, the TT will get to 60mph in 5.6 seconds. I would opt for the S-line package that adds nice badging and styling cues.

ust because your appearance stands out doesn’t mean everyone is going to like what they see. While the likes of Audi and Acura toe a conservative style line among upscale automakers, Lexus is sticking with the extroverted styling theme it’s built around the so-called “spindle grille” that dominates the face of the latest RX mid-size crossover. This isn’t the first RX to feature the spindle grille, but it is the first to have been designed around it. Thanks to it and a number of other styling elements, we think this—for better or worse— is the most interesting-looking Lexus crossover in the brand’s history. We haven’t forgotten about the smaller NX, but while it wears similarly creased bodywork (and yes, that grille), it all looks a bit cluttered on that compact’s smaller body. By contrast, the RX’s added overall length creates a more suitable canvas for Lexus’ designers to work with. The result is a fourth-generation RX more distinctive than any of its predecessors, a relatively daring move for an automaker that, largely, has played things pretty straight since it was spun off as Toyota’s premium brand in the late 1980s. But like any good brand, Lexus is selfaware enough to know that too drastic of a departure might drive away buyers, and that’s why the RX’s restrained interior creates such a sharp contrast to the edgy exterior. Standout design elements include the infotainment screen set atop the dash, large enough to show both navigation and either audio or climate control information. We wished the nifty striped trim on the centre console was used more extensively throughout the cabin. We also liked the comfortable seating, which included electric rear seat adjustments with the executive trim package. That package also includes a sweet-sounding 15-speaker stereo system, power-adjustable front-seat thigh supports, touch-free power tailgate, 360-degree camera system, and precollision system with automatic braking. One major annoyance was with the remote touch interface infotainment controller, which is far too sensitive, making it a challenge to use effectively. On paper, the German automakers also have an advantage in their torquey

2016 Lexus RX

turbocharged engines, while the RX uses a comparatively straightforward 3.5-litre V6 shared with, of all vehicles, the Toyota Camry sedan and Sienna minivan. But this is an excellent engine no matter what car it’s bolted into, and it’s even better in the new RX when paired with an all-new eight-speed automatic transmission. This V6 may not be as rich in low-end power as those German turbo motors, but the eight-speed’s tightly-spaced ratios make great use of the engine’s 295 hp and 267 lbft of torque and give the RX great acceleration, from a stop or at speed. Selectable drive modes (eco, normal and sport) let the driver tailor the experience to some degree. We were less excited by the soft ride which, though extremely comfortable, doesn’t offer much in the way of driver engagement. We suppose that’s what we’d expect from Lexus, but if you want the firmer ride and sharper handling more characteristic of a German crossover, the RX can be optioned with an F-Sport package whose

air suspension reacts to that drive selector by tightening up in sport mode. Official fuel consumption estimates are 12.2/8.9 L/100 km (city/ highway), and our tester averaged 11.3 L/100 km in combined driving. You might be surprised, as a couple of other people were, at this RX 350’s $68,000 price as tested; a $54,000 base price is more palatable, but that higher number is actually still an excellent value compared to many of the RX’s European competitors. The Acura MDX and Volvo XC90 are among the few upscale mid-size crossovers that comes in at a similar price point when fitted with close to the same features. The RX has always distinguished itself with strong value for money, but this latest version’s controversial styling helps set this crossover apart even more. And shoppers who don’t mind -- or even enjoy -- the RX’s look are the lucky ones who will discover they can own one of the most luxurious vehicles in its class for a very nice price.

T

he Sport Utility Truck is the original Crossover, a blend of a truck and a sport utility vehicle. This new generation of the Honda Ridgeline has really taken the SUT market and run with it. I like to imagine that when Honda was having a meeting back in 2005 about whether to build a new truck or a new SUV, someone said “well why not both?”. Chevrolet did it with the Avalanche so why couldn’t Honda? The first generation of the Ridgeline was very successful and went on to sell for 10 years. This year Honda has redesigned completely redesigned it with a whole new look and updated interior. My biggest gripe with the first-generation Honda Ridgeline has always been the looks. I thought someone just took a Chevy Avalanche and just Hondarized it 5 years after it was released. Clearly Honda won that popularity contest because the new generation of Ridgeline is quite literally in a class of its own ever since the Avalanche was discontinued in 2013. Granted the ¼ ton truck market will always appeal to the truck purists but with Honda’s new looks I wouldn’t bet on that for much longer. The biggest exterior change is the separation of the bed from the rest of the body. Now the Ridgeline actually looks like a truck, not an Element that didn’t quite clear the garage door. Even though the bed length hasn’t changed, putting in that body line gives the appearance of a much longer truck. Honda has gone with their now nearly standard LED running lights and headlights and unsurprisingly they are absolutely fantastic. The watertight, lockable and drainable storage box in the cab is very large and very handy. The way the Ridgeline turns its box into an epic sound system is every tailgaters and “sports enthusiasts” dream. If you’ve done any amount of camping or tailgating, you know the struggles of a small Bluetooth radio that is barely louder than the sound of your own voice. With the Ridgeline’s new truck bed audio system, 6 small exciters vibrate against the metal in the trucks box and quite literally turn it into a massive speaker. The dual opening tailgate I’m not so sure about. It’s not very often that I would ever need to swing a tailgate open to the side, and there isn’t nearly enough room to do that in a parking lot. Lowering the tailgate the old-fashioned way is now much harder because the door is substantially heavier to accommodate the dual hinges and locks. If it aint broke, don’t fix it. The Ridgeline I tested this week was the Black Edition, which had one of the best interiors I’ve seen in any Honda product to date. Heated and air conditioned black leather seats with red stitching are standard up front as well as heated seats in the rear. The red continues with LED interior lighting and ambiance. Visibility is excellent thanks to a massive 30

2017 Honda Ridgeline front windshield and small A pillar windows cut down on blind spots. The premium sound system sounds great and the display screen clear and easy to navigate. Unlike other small trucks the rear seats fold up and away to reveal a completely flat floor, but a little more leg room would be nice. As good as the interior is I can’t help but think Honda tried a little too hard to make the Ridgeline as SUV like as possible. I kept thinking I was sitting in the new MDX until I look out the back window and saw the bed out the rear window. For example, the Ridgeline is equipped with Active Noise Cancellation which pumps sound out of the speakers to

cancel out any road, engine and exterior noise. It works so well that I’ve found myself struggling to stay awake on long drives and in traffic. It can also make for some really, very awkward silences when travelling with friends. The way the hood slopes away make it a little hard to judge distances when in tight spaces but the parking sensors and back up camera helps make up for it. If you are looking at a new Ridgeline, I recommend sitting in the Black edition first. I know it’s a little more money but you get literally every interior option and it looks fantastic. Honda powered the Ridgeline with their “Earth Dreams” 3.5L V6 that has

Intelligent Vtec and a SOHC. Translation: it’s designed for fuel efficiency and emissions regulations. Don’t get me wrong there’s still 280hp and 262lb/ft. of torque on tap under the right pedal. But that isn’t actually that much when you consider the truck weighs nearly 4600lbs. In typical Honda fashion, most of the power is only available higher in the RPM range, so driving around town you find yourself needing to stand on the pedal, more often than not, to pass or merge onto the highway. Honda says that the new Ridgeline has a 1500lb payload capacity and can tow 5000lbs, which is quite the feat with an allwheel drive drivetrain and very comfortable independent suspension. Speaking of the suspension, the Ridgeline does actually handle very well. The suspension eats up bumps while still cornering well and the steering is quite responsive for an electric system. I didn’t get the chance to take the SUT off road but the lack of ground clearance was a big worry for me. Nevertheless, the Ridgeline did everything I asked of it and did it fairly well. I’ve owned 5 full size pickup trucks, a Suburban and a Landcruiser in my last 10 years of driving. Every single one was a great truck, but not the kind of vehicle I’d like to commute if I worked in any major urban areas. In that sense, I think Honda has hit the nail on the head with the new Ridgeline. It’s a great compromise for the average person that wants the capability of a truck but doesn’t want the size or the stiff suspension. It’s more for the weekend warriors that commute to work every day and haul the kids around to school and back, then build decks and go camping on the weekends. It’s not for everyone but that’s the beauty of it. As I said before, the Ridgeline does everything well. It’s not the best 4x4, the best commuter or the best toy hauler. But it does do a little of everything.

n the world of the aftermarket, everything isn’t always fun and games. Safety and convenience is a big priority for a lot of drivers. That’s why in this article, I am going to go over my top 5 safety and convenience products you can get for your vehicle. Dash Camera No one ever wants to get into an accident, but it’s better to be prepared if something does happen. After an accident drivers are asked to recall what happened and hopefully there are witnesses to help clarify what actually happened in the event. The problem is with shock, adrenaline and/or loss of consciousness, it may be almost impossible to fully understand what happened. Dash cams help really show the event, helping protect drivers in situations where insurance companies deemed it their fault when it might actually not have been. There also has been a lot of fraudulent activity caught on dash cams showing drivers backing into other drivers claiming “they got hit from behind”. Just search on Youtube. For how inexpensive and compact these products are now, get the extra assurance with a good quality dash cam. Backup Camera Automotive body design is geared more towards style and less towards function. Cars are getting harder to see out of towards the back lowering your awareness. Manufacturers are realizing this and you’re seeing more backup cameras installed from the factory. Unfortunately not every make and model comes with this solution as standard equipment yet. If your vehicle is not equipped with a backup camera, there is a wide selection of aftermarket solutions. I even post a few videos on my Youtube channel (AnthonyJ350) demonstrating them. There are universal lip mount types, vehicle specific i.e. replacing a tailgate handle with a camera built in, as well as license plate 34

My Top Picks style camera mounts. As for displays, you can change the head unit to one with a screen, add an auxiliary screen somewhere in the vehicle, change the mirror with a built in screen (application specific) or even use a pre-existing monitor in built in the vehicle if a module is available. There really is a solution for almost every application. Collision Avoidance Sensors This can be installed as a standalone parking aid or used in conjunction with a backup camera. It’s a more involved installation to get them in compared to a backup camera but it has a more discreet look in the cabin. Some people prefer to use just their mirrors and looking behind at the back window and listening to the parking aids helping them judge how close they are to the object they are back up to. Remote Starter and Security System The colder months are upon us and having the ability to warm up your vehicle via remote for a few minutes can be a huge time saver because you can do those last minute tasks before you have to leave, as opposed to just sitting and waiting in your vehicle. Not only can a remote starter add a lot of convenience in your life but safety as well. It’s a lot better to start and run your vehicle via remote than start the vehicle with the key, and leave it in the vehicle unattended. Leaving the key in the ignition is just asking for it to be stolen. Having a security system installed is a great deterrent to help keep thieves away from your vehicle, especially for vehicles parked outside. Products like this can also maintain or give you more convenience by having all the controls your original key fob had and possibly giving you more control over other features (extra labour may apply). GPS Tracking Products like this may have more value for owners who own fleets, vehicles that get stolen easily or have a very prestigious vehicle they want to protect and know its whereabouts. However the technology has become so much more affordable and accessible we’re seeing more and more people purchase product like this. Certain companies like Viper let you see and control everything through your phone, letting you see where your vehicle is and even if it is speeding. This may be a great investment for parents kids are new drivers.

Stress and Weight Loss

Stress and Weight Loss qxwA Aqy Bwr Gtwauxw

hen it comes to losing weight people often resort to fat burning supplements to help them shed the extra pounds. Conventional fat burners often can contribute to elevated cortisol levels that also are caused under stress, as they contain large amounts of caffeine or plant based caffeine extracts. Cortisol is a life sustaining adrenal hormone, referred to as “the stress hormone,” cortisol influences, regulates and modulates many of the changes that occur in the body in response to stress including, but not limited to blood sugar (glucose) level, fat, protein and carbohydrate metabolism to maintain blood sugar management, immune responses, anti-inflammatory actions, and blood pressure to name a few. Knowing the basics of what is required to combat stress will help you physically and mentally to deal with the physical side effects that stress incurs. Removing caffeine from your diet and or supplement regimen will be the first thing to do when looking to improve your health and reduce the hormonal response that stress and high cortisol can cause. Too low levels of this also can cause health concerns, and mass fatigue. Finding the balance between these is crucial to living healthy. Supplementing with a multi-vitamin is the first place to start for not only weight loss, but also for managing stress. B-5 also known as Pantothenic Acid is the number one B vitamin used to support the adrenals which are under attack during stressful times. It is best to consume B5 with the other B vitamins as a group or family. Taking just B5 on its own solely can lead to a deficiency of other minerals and vitamins. Another beneficial supplement which helps with both stress and weight loss is the amino acid L-Tyrosine. Tyrosine supports energy, mood and better sleep patterns, which are all things that are physically beneficial for stress while also managing metabolism. Taking measures to help control the physical side effects of stress and unwanted weight will greatly improve your mental state; by helping one, you are helping the other and the pattern continues. Stress can lead to a whole host of side effects that deteriorate your health 38

Stress and Weight Loss and metabolism and if unmanaged lead to serious problems in the future with your well-being. There are numerous other supplements in the market formulate specifically to “stressmanagement”. Take some time perhaps even after reading this to look into a few, they are not only for stress, but for the general health and wellness from being a child to senior, and are required for everyone. Everyone has their own “level’ of stress in each age group, be proactive for you and your family. Being pro-active in your physical state does not require more than taking measures such as multi-vitamin daily and informing yourself on proper nutritional habits. Be sure to speak to your physician, pharmacist or natural path regarding ways to manage stress through supplements and vitamins. Be sure to crossreference any prescription medications with any vitamins and supplements you take before using.

adjustment and even the top is completely manual. I was at first taken a little aback by the absence of the power retractable hardtop that I grew quite fond of during the last go-round, until a colleague assured me the soft top operation is not like what I was imagining. On the original NA, putting up the top usually involved getting out of the car, hoisting it up, getting back in the car and then securing two spring latches. Now, you can simply release the single clasp, reach behind you while still sitting in the driver’s seat, and fling the lightweight top onehanded and clamp it down, all in a matter of seconds. Simply beautiful. Press the engine start button and the twin tailpipes at the rear emit a pleasant burst of sound as the SKYACTIV-G 2.0-litre four cylinder engine fires up. Miatas have always provided drivers with great ergonomics and seating position, and this one is no different. The hood is lower than before, so all you see are the creased ridges flaring up on either side. The wheel, shifter and pedals are situated where it feels perfect when your hands and feet are at the ready. A lot of naysayers say, “Oh, well it’s only got 155 horsepower.” And yes, that’s true. Let’s not forget that Mazda has managed to drop about 68 kilograms of weight, making it only about 83 kg heavier than the first gen. The motor is situated lower and deeper in the engine bay, giving the car an uncanny feeling of balance when you’re pivoting the car around corners. The ND begs to be revved up and tossed around. It’s not a loud car, but the high-pitched whine of the engine is paired perfectly to rapidly rising rpms, peaking at 6,000. And no matter how much I wringed it out in city or on long stretches of highway, the fuel consumption never crept past 9.3 L/100 km. The suspension set up is familiar: double wishbone front and rear multilink that is smooth and always surefooted. The 2016 Mazda MX-5 comes standard with air conditioning, LED headlights with automatic levelling/LED combination taillights, Bluetooth connectivity and USB input, and either a six-speed manual or automatic with paddle shifters. The base GX trim starts at $31,900, and the grade-topping GT with leather, Bose premium audio system and heated exterior mirrors is priced at $39,200. NOVEMBER / DECEMBER 2016
