Every Region Has Its Season! J
im Baugh Outdoors TV has had the pleasure of filming in most parts of the East Coast over the last 33 years. However, the bulk of our programming comes from the Mid-Atlantic region. The Chesapeake Bay and its tidal rivers, and all up and down the Outer Banks has been our mainstay of outdoor storytelling. Every region in the United States has a species of fish it is known for. From largemouth bass to white marlin, where you are determines what you catch. While our Mid-Atlantic states offer a large variety of species to fish for, one of the most popular fish—and one that the Chesapeake Bay area is renowned for—is rockfish. Also known as striped bass, these fish are widely sought after because they grow large, put up a decent fight and will make for one of the most delicious holiday meals one will ever have. ’Tis the season for rockfish! Our favorite rockfish has had its ups and downs over the years. In years past, there have been moratoriums, then come backs, then the fish seem to “disappear” by simply not coming into the bay, then everything seems to rebound again. These fish are pretty closely monitored, and I do hope all sportsmen will adhere to the regulations. These swings affect a lot of things like tourism dollars and fishing tournaments. One of the longest-running and best-run rockfish tournaments is the Rockfish Shootout, held at the Oyster Farm on Virginia’s Eastern Shore in December. If you are thinking about coming to our area, I highly suggest you try this tourney out. It is always a great event. If you are coming to the Chesapeake Bay and are new to rockfishing, here is some good advice. As always, contact local tackle shops to get the latest and current info. Hiring an experienced local charter is always a great idea and will introduce you to how the locals catch their fish. A tried-and-true method is live eeling, simply with a freeline or small sinker. Fish the channels and over the tunnels of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge or the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel. These bridges have fantastic “light lines” in the water caused by the highway lights on the bridges. Get yourself some bucktails and soft-plastic shad and cast to the pilings at night. Just be sure to fish the up-current side of the bridge pilings. Years of rockfish TV Shows are available on Jim Baugh Outdoors TV channels; season 33 is on both Amazon Prime Video and YouTube. If you want a great Christmas gift for your favorite outdoorsman, check out Jim Baugh’s book “HOOKED,” which is available on Amazon.

HAVALON TALON:
CUTTING EDGE INNOVATION
A
By CAM Staff
ny surgeon or taxidermist will tell you the best tool for cutting flesh is a scalpel. And that’s where knife-maker Havalon got its start. Their parent company, Havel’s, is a medical device company that supplies scalpels for surgical use. When the idea arose to bring the same incredibly sharp blades to the outdoors, it gave tools to outdoorsmen that are more precise than any hunting or fillet knife ever invented. The first Havalon Piranta was a blade modeled after an autopsy scalpel that folded into a sturdy handle. It offered all sorts of outdoorsmen the benefits of an ultra-sharp scalpel blade in the form of a pocketknife. But the blade itself was not built to handle the rigors of everyday use. That’s when Havalon began tinkering to find the best combination of sharpness and strength. The resulting innovation has made Havalon one of the topselling knife companies in the country and the leader in the hunting industry. “We have always felt—that a sharp blade does not need to be used with any excessive force,” said Havalon Marketing Director Ryan Cull. “This is still a core belief of our company, but we know there is a segment of consumers that want to have sturdier blades.”
4
DECEMBER 2020
The need for a sturdier blade that retains Havalon-level sharpness launched the Talon project. Designers set out to create a knife handle that accommodates an entire collection of different ultra-sharp blade styles. With a 3-inch serrated blade, a 3-inch gut hook combo blade and fillet blades of 5, 7 and 9 inches, it is the only knife you’ll ever need at the cutting board or skinning pole. This all-in-one precision cutting tool was three years in the making. Designing a handle mechanism to swap out blades quickly and easily was achieved with the ingeniously simple push-button Quik Change II system. Finding the sweet spot between scalpel sharp and durable was the next step, and the blades also needed to be tailored to their particular uses. Through more tinkering and testing, Havalon landed on AUS-8 steel—the gold standard—which offers the best combination of edge retention and strength. Thickness and shapes of the different blades were custom designed. Fillet knives require flexibility; gut hooks do not. Each blade type was carefully considered and rigorously tested to achieve optimal performance for its intended use. The
THE ANGLER VIDEO MAGAZINE
final result is a single knife kit that outperforms a whole cutlery set of traditional knives. Extreme sharpness is something Havalon users have come to expect with blades intended for replacement when they lose their edge. Talon blades are different. They are scalpel sharp, yet they are strong enough to be resharpened. “So long as users don’t pry on the blades with extreme force or damage them in some other unforeseeable way, they should be able to go years without buying replacements,” said Cull. “The versatility of the blade styles along with the strength and sharpness of the blades make the Talon one of the most innovative products to come out in the industry in years.” To see all the features of the Talon and all of Havalon’s other scalpel-sharp knives, visit www.havalon.com.

In The Sailfish Capital of the World By Nick Carter
C
apt. Scott Fawcett didn’t hesitate when asked to make a prediction about sailfish season off Florida’s Treasure Coast. His outlook is extremely bullish. “This is going to be one of the best sailfish seasons we’ve had in a long time,” he said. “By the middle of December, I think we’re going to see the best sailfishing we’ve had in the last 10 years.” Fawcett’s optimism is based on a number of factors he’s followed for more than three decades fishing Florida’s Atlantic Coast. December and January is the historic peak season from Vero south to Palm Beach, Fla. The bite is heavily influenced by winter fronts and the proximity of the Gulf Stream, and everyone is eagerly awaiting strong northeast winds to usher sailfish south to their wintering grounds and closer to shore. Closer to shore isn’t far out of Stuart, Fla., where Fawcett’s Off the Chain fishing charters is based. In an area known as the “Sailfish Capital of the World,” it’s typically a short 8-mile ride
6
DECEMBER 2020
in his 32’ Contender “Off The Chain” to reach the color edges and temperature breaks where sailfish hunt. In November, Fawcett’s attention was tuned to fishing reports some 600 miles to the north off the coast of North Carolina. “We had a phenomenal sailfish summer,” he said, speaking of the action that usually goes down from April to June or July most years. “It seems like that body of fish disappeared offshore for a while and then showed up off Morehead City. Last time that happened, we had a fantastic season. I expect to see good numbers of sailfish in December.” With the relatively flat bottom out of Stuart, blind trolling to cover water along the temperature breaks, color edges and reef lines is the preferred tactic. Fawcett pulls a dredge, an umbrella rig of some 30 or 40 baits and lures, to locate and draw in fish. “You’ll see them come up behind the teaser,” Fawcett said. “Then you’ll put your hook baits in front of the fish.”
THE ANGLER VIDEO MAGAZINE
It’s up to the anglers to manipulate those “hook baits”—usually ballyhoo on a circle hook—in front of the fish. “On a good day, expect five or six sailfish bites and the same amount of dolphin bites and then some bonito or a big kingfish mixed in,” Fawcett said. “Occasionally, we’ll also get a blackfin or a big wahoo while trolling or kite fishing.” Kite fishing out of Stuart requires the right conditions. Sometimes when Fawcett finds a good current rip or color change, he’ll drop the trolling motor and deploy kites and live baits. Off The Chain’s center console allows 360 degrees of fishability, and when kites are flying, it’s worth dropping baits to the bottom, as well. While waiting on sailfish, anglers can fill the cooler with whatever’s in season. A mixed bag of snapper and grouper species is the norm. Call Capt. Scott Fawcett at 772-285-1055 and check out Off the Chain Charters at www.offthechainfishing.com. SAFETY

DELAYED HARVEST TROUT ACROSS THE SOUTHEAST By Nick Carter
WATCH
VIDEO
I
t’s a wonderful time of year to be a trout angler in the Southeast. Across the region, states have been stocking trout streams for the delayed harvest seasons. From now through the winter months into spring, these streams are catch-and-release only. High densities of trout that stay in these creeks and rivers during the cool season make for some of the fastest action of the year. The regulations and timing of the delayed harvest seasons vary slightly from state to state, but generally it’s single-hook, artificial only. Here’s a quick rundown of some of the best delayed harvest opportunities across the Southeast.
Tellico River, Tennessee DH Season: Oct. 1-Feb. 28
Falling from high mountains at the Tennessee/North Carolina border, the Tellico is a beautiful freestone that holds both stocked trout and wild trout, thanks to a productive system of clean, high-elevation tributaries. The delayed harvest stretch is long, nearly 8 miles of river stretching from the North Carolina border downstream to the mouth of North River. It’s is in a relatively remote corner of Tennessee east of Tellico Plains, so fishing pressure is not as heavy as might be expected.
North Mills River, North Carolina DH Season: Oct. 1-June 4
The North Mills River, between Hendersonville and Asheville, fishes a lot like a high-mountain creek on its upper end. The difference is it’s loaded with fish that are bigger than the little rainbows you’d typically find in a wild stream. The creek sees a good deal of fishing pressure around the parking lot at the North Mills Recreation Area, but taking a little hike upstream will outdistance most of the casual anglers. Take your small rod, and enjoy making short casts to eager fish in small pools and pocket water.
Eastatoe Creek, South Carolina DH Season: Nov. 1-May 14
The entire state of South Carolina only has about 200 miles of trout water. So it might come as a surprise to some that there are good fisheries in the Upstate. Over in the mountains, near where the borders of North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia meet, there are some very good trout streams. The Eastatoe is one of them. On the lower end, the Eastatoe is a
decent-sized flow, shallow and broken by shoals, which makes for easy wading. There is also ample, relatively easy access to the river, and it is kept brimming with trout from the nearby Walhalla Fish Hatchery.
Chattahoochee River, Georgia DH Season: Nov. 1-May 14
Running through the northwest side of Atlanta, the 4-mile delayed harvest stretch of the Chattahoochee River is a large, shoal-broken escape from the city. It’s also a heck of a trout fishery. Easily accessible via river parks and a trail that runs the length of the delayed harvest stretch, it’s a good place to walk and wade. A short float trip in a small boat is a good way to access water that others can’t. It’s a big river with big blue winged olive hatches in the cooler months. Nick Carter is the author of “Flyfisher’s Guide to North Carolina & Georgia,” a guide book that includes maps, GPS access points and detailed descriptions of the region’s best trout fishing. HENDERSONVILLE, NC: Great Streams (and Craft Beverages) Await
I
f you’re an angler who enjoys following up a day on mountain trout streams with a refreshing craft beverage or two, cast your attention to the Blue Ridge mountain town of Hendersonville. This North Carolina town, about 22 miles south of Asheville, offers miles of stocked trout waters, as well as the popular Hendersonville Cheers! Trail. The two resources make it possible to spend the day catching three types of trout – rainbow, brown and brook – while spending an evening exploring three types of craft beverages – beer, wine and hard cider. First, the fishing part. North Mills River is the prime trout stream in the Hendersonville area. The river’s 4-mile section of delayed harvest waters receives an annual infusion of 11,000 trout from N.C. Wildlife. Spring is a great time to fly fish the delayed harvest waters of North Mills River because no trout have been harvested since Sept. 30. Another hot spot for trout fishing is just across the Henderson County line toward Brevard. The Davidson River offers miles of public trout waters that receive annual stockings of 16,500 fish. Other lesser-known fishing spots near Hendersonville include three streams on the eastern side of Henderson County, about 20 to 30 minutes from downtown. Rocky Broad River has a 1.2-mile stretch of hatchery support waters, while Cane Creek, near the Fletcher community, has 1.5mile stretch of hatchery supported waters. For those who really want a unique experience, Little River in DuPont State Recreational Forest provides a scenic setting for trout fishing. Delayed harvest waters flow through undisturbed mountains and over several
notable waterfalls. Those waterfalls were immortalized on Hollywood’s silver screen in The Last of the Mohicans, as well as the backdrop for the exploits of Katniss Everdeen in the original Hunger Games movie. When the fishing is done, the Cheers! Trail awaits. The trail is one of North Carolina’s best, featuring 16 craft producers offering a variety of experiences. Beer fans love Sierra Nevada’s tasting room, which is one of the largest on the East Coast and features an expansive patio and outdoor amphitheater, while Bold Rock Hard Cider has emerged as a national leader in the hard cider industry and regularly hosts live music (indoors and outdoors), along with cidery tours and a food truck. Several craft producers on the trail create small-batch beverages prized for their quality and originality. Three breweries – Southern Appalachian, Triskelion and Guidon – are within a few blocks of each other in the Depot District, while Sanctuary Brewing Co. is only a few blocks away on Main Street. Three wineries produce high-quality wines from European varietals. The newest – Point Lookout Vineyards – is located atop a 3,000-foot mountain with panoramic views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Saint Paul Mountain Vineyards is on farmland that’s been in the family for more than nine generations. And two miles from Saint Paul, Burntshirt Vineyards offers tastings in its renovated farmhouse overlooking rolling hills of vines. Gulf Nearshore Heating Up With
Hogs&Tripletail By Capt. Quinlyn Haddon
WATCH
D
ecember on Florida’s Gulf Coast presents unique opportunities to nearshore fishermen, as autumn cold fronts push many species closer to shore. Nearshore fishing is optimal right now, which is great news as weather may prohibit offshore trips. Blackfin tuna will start showing up closer to land than any other time of the year, tripletail will be stacked on crab trap buoys that pepper the beaches, and the hogfish bite is becoming extremely reliable. Crab trap buoys have been soaking along the beaches since October. They have become residences for one of the most interesting fish in the Gulf. Tripletail are visible as dark to golden blobs hanging just below the buoys. While cruising set traps, you can get relatively close without spooking these fish. Be ready with shrimp or greenbacks, and take your time casting; you may only have one shot at it. Once a tripletail notices the hook in your bait, it is not likely to go after it again. If you
24

miss the first shot, make the next cast with a different type of bait. If that also fails, it is time to move on to the next trap and the next fish. Tripletail might also favor different depths on a given day. If you see one, continue along that same line of buoys. Alternatively, if you aren’t finding any, try scooting out to a line of traps in deeper water. Farther offshore, the hogfish are getting fired up. Hogfish fishing grounds can be difficult to locate and might not appear as anything special on your bottom machine. An experienced captain makes finding them a lot easier. If you choose to go it alone, the following tips might help. Hogball jigs are essentially weighted balls with a tiny chain leading to a hook. This is a great tool for catching hogfish that can be replicated with other rigs. The idea is to have the bait lying on the bottom for these scavengers to find. Shrimp is key to catching hogs, and you
THE ANGLER VIDEO MAGAZINE
can be equally successful with giant live ones or small, stinky defrosted ones. If you choose not to use a hogball, a standard setup with a jighead or a small weight with a short leader will work. The bait should sit on bottom with a little slack. The slack gives hogfish a chance to get the hook in their ridiculous mouths. The bite-to-hookup ratio with hogfish isn’t great, so be patient and keep sending down shrimp. You’ll want a landing net when targeting hogfish, as they often come unbuttoned at the surface. They also vary in size, and a net ensures the giant ones get into the boat while the undersized ones are handled gently for release. Capt. Haddon fishes with Reel Lucky Fishing Charters out of St. Petersburg, Fla. Call or text Capt. Joseph Dephillips to book a charter at (727) 557-7829. Contact Capt. nglers who target wahoo know that wahoo have very specific and unique preferences. Yes, it’s true that from time to time, most offshore anglers will invariably attract a wahoo into their spread, but targeting and actually catching wahoo is not happenchance. Wahoo are some of the fastest swimmers in the ocean. Anglers know these speedy predators prefer attacking faster-moving baits. Wahoo are also more attracted to baits pulled beneath the surface rather than right at or above the surface. With more than 50 wahoo tournament wins, Ballyhood Cowbell lures are specifically designed to attract and catch wahoo… Big Wahoo. They come rigged and ready to fish with stainless steel cable leaders. The sheer weight and design of Ballyhood Cowbells allows you to troll them at fast speeds, from 14 to 23 knots depending on the model. These lures troll beneath the surface and put off a bubble trail that drives big wahoo crazy. Go ahead. Ring the Cowbell. It’s dinner time!

MONO-HULL T VS. “CAT” DUAL-HULL PERFORMANCE By Thatch Maguire
he debate over which hull design is preferable (monohull vs. dual-hull) has been battered around for decades. Most cat-hull owners are very familiar with mono-hulls. My suspicion is that many mono-hull enthusiasts may not necessarily be familiar with the attributes of a dual-hull vessel. Forrest Munden and Charlie Henderson are very familiar with dual-hulls. They’re the people behind Sea Cat, one of the smoothest-running, most fuel efficient and versatile boats on the water. This boat thrives in a 3- to 5-foot chop. Sea Cat owners share the experience of often being the only boats on the water during choppy bad weather days. Dual-hull boats, and Sea Cat in particular, do not pound… ever! Remove pounding from your boating experience, and you’ll see how much more enjoyable your time on the water becomes. You’ll also be out there running comfortably when conditions are too rough for most boats. Before you allow your position on the mono-hull vs. dual hull debate to be etched in stone, I strongly recommend you take a ride, preferably on a rough day, in the legendary Sea Cat. I predict you’ll be instantly convinced of its benefits. The thing most first-time Sea Cat passengers do is to hold on to a railing and brace for a pounding that never occurs. You can see it in the tense position of their feet, legs and arms as they hold on to the rail. It’s a fairly standard mono-hull position. They are accustomed to the pounding. They’re prepared for it, anticipating it... but on the Sea Cat it never occurs. Never. It’s actually pretty funny to see the look on a Sea Cat passenger’s face when they finally realize there’s no need to brace. That’s also when a smile spreads across their face. They’ve settled the debate.

TIM BAREFOOT
e’ve all experienced the mid-day slowdown, when a hot morning bite tapers off into nothing more than a boat ride. There’s a pretty simple explanation for this lull after the early morning feeding period. It’s right above our heads; it’s the sun! Fish don’t have Maui Jims… or even eyelids. Anything with a big eye, like wahoo or tuna, uses water depth to regulate the amount of light that reaches them. The fish haven’t stopped feeding. They’ve retreated to depths where they are more comfortable. It’s the reason why the planer rod is many times the only rod working during the middle of the day. That rod is attached to the only bait you’ve got down deep. There’s no rule that says you have to use ballyhoo and/or keep the trolling speed at 6 or 7 knots. Here’s a little tip I learned from another captain that has proven deadly during the mid-day lull. Try this on for size: Slow down significantly and put a couple big natural baits down on a downrigger. Ballyhoo are the trolling bait of choice for good reason. Ballyhoo are responsible for more trolling fish than all other baits combined. They are not, however, a naturally occurring baitfish everywhere. You know what is a natural forage item everywhere? Squid! It is the bait that is down deep where the fish are, and it is a bait they eat. I’ve said it many times, “Don’t go to a Chinese restaurant and order a pizza.” Well, squid are like General Tso’s chicken when fish dive to escape the glaring sun. On the downrigger with release clips, set one squid at 50 feet and another at 100 feet deep. One or both of them are all but certain to get a bite. Catching fish while all the other boats are just riding is fun, and another thing I like about this style of fishing is it lightens up the available via Fed Ex or UPS. A major seafood importer has listened to tackle considerably. Instead of winching a wahoo to the boat on the us and now delivers the goods! Visit my website for details on both. hen I was a kid, I would wander the beaches WATCH VIDEO on Long Island, trying to figure out what constituted productive water. It was tough to divine the signs that would reveal whether there were fish under the surface, unless a school broke into a feeding frenzy. That was rare, though. One of the most important lessons I learned was that professional seiners staked their livelihoods on finding schools of fish. Any time I saw a motorized seining boat towed by a four-wheel drive pickup on the beach, followed by a second truck, I ran as fast as I could to keep up with them. I must have been quite a runner, because I ended up fishing next to John “Red” White’s Sagaponack-based crew on many late summer and early autumn afternoons. Once they arrived at the proper spot, they took to their boat and stretched their net behind the breaking surf. Next, they slowly brought the two ends of the net back in with winches attached to the two vehicles. I sometimes caught stray blues surfcasting next to them, but the I dashed down to the site, and as we were already armed with trash bags, we real excitement was when the net emerged from the backwash and all the filled one of them with a couple dozen flounder. When we returned to the fish were revealed. White and his guys would sort the marketable species house, where our overnight guests were just waking up, we were greeted as like striped bass, weakfish and bluefish and heave them into the backs of conquering heroes when we started to fry the fillets. Peter Matthiessen wrote an excellent book on the baymen who drove the trucks. They left less-desirable species lying on the beach, where they were the beaches looking for fish titled, “Men’s Lives.” It offers an intimate look at quickly gathered by anyone lucky enough to be wandering by. SUZUKI DF300B OUTBOARD
T
he new DF300B V-6 4-stroke joins Suzuki’s flagship 350hp contra-rotating outboard, and brings a new level of acceleration, performance and efficiency to a whole new class of boats rated for 300hp maximum (or 600/900hp maximum in twin/triple installations). Suzuki’s proven contra-rotating propeller system provides superior “grip” on the water when boaters hit the throttle, for excellent hole shot and strong acceleration, even when pushing heavy, fully loaded boats. With the engine’s power distributed over six blades, rather than three, Suzuki is able to reduce the size of the gears and create a sleek, hydrodynamic lower unit that slices through the water with minimum drag. This increased propeller blade surface area and contra-rotating action also deliver exceptional acceleration while providing incredible reverse thrust. In the Suzuki tradition, this new outboard is packed with innovative technology from the bottom to the top. The DF300B’s robust 4.4-liter displacement engine features a 10.5:1 compression ratio and duel fuel injectors for optimum performance and efficiency using 87 octane fuel. By using two smaller fuel injectors, Suzuki delivers a precise amount of fuel to the center of the combustion chamber, improving atomization and avoiding off-center combustion, a common cause of engine knock. Injecting 100% of the fuel into the cylinder at once also keeps the fuel cool, providing additional power. A dual-louver, direct air intake system on the DF300B helps the engine breath freely for optimum performance while separating out water, spray and moisture for improved reliability. This unique intake system also provides the engine with cooler, denser air for a more powerful combustion cycle. The DF300B features the offset driveshaft engine layout found on other Suzuki outboards, allowing for an overall compact design, along with two-stage gear reduction (2.29:1) for plenty of low-end torque without sacrificing top-end performance. This compact size, light weight (727 lbs. for 25” shaft) and easy integration with Suzuki Precision Control drive-by-wire throttle and shift controls make the DF300B a clear choice for rigging on a wide variety of boats in single or twin To learn more, visit: www.suzukimarine.com installations — particularly on vessels with second stations.

apt. Nick Fischer nodded at a boat dock ahead. “There should be a good one under there,” he said. “We had a couple there this morning but saw a real solid fish just before we left.” It didn’t take long to confirm a nice snook was home. I hooked it and, after wrestling it from between the pilings, it turned toward open water. As I felt the battle shift in my favor, the line parted, likely from earlier contact with the pilings. “That can happen when you’re fishing up tight like this,” said our skipper, “but some days you have to dig in to get the big ones. Other times we’ll find them in more open water around oyster bars or in the surf.” Captiva Island, on Florida’s southwest coast, is prime territory for snook, redfish, sea trout, tarpon and a variety of other inshore species. “Our waters produce so well because we have a ton of bait, structure and opportunity
here,” said Fischer, proprietor of Tarpon Fischer Charters (http://www.tarponfischercharters. com). “Pine Island Sound, on the backside of the island, for example, has several passes that allow water and bait to flow in and out. The Peace, Myakka and Caloosahatchee rivers also empty into here. I run a lot of my charters out of South Seas Island Resorts (https://www. southseas.com) at the north end of Captiva, and from there you can be fishing in the sound or the open Gulf in a matter of minutes.” Snook and redfish top 40 inches, tarpon range from chickens to 200 pounds and sea trout are abundant. Those species are resident, noted Fischer, but come December and January, offshore action also kicks in with snapper, sheepshead, grouper, kingfish and cobia, among others For anglers, these waters call for medium-light spinning tackle. Rig a size 3/0 J-hook or a light jighead on a 2 1/2-foot leader of 30-pound mono to freeline live baits around structure,
mangroves or the surf edge. Add a 1/2-ounce split-shot two feet above the hook to get down in deeper water or stronger currents, or add a float two feet above this rig to fish the flats. If you prefer to throw lures, toss a 4-inch paddletail, Rapala Skitter Walk or Zara Spook. Fischer favors a 7 1/2-foot, 8- to 17-pound class Bull Bay rod and Shimano 4000 spinning reels for his inshore fishing. Keep in mind this area occasionally suffers from red tide blooms. “It can be here one week and gone the next.” Fischer said. “If it occurs during your visit, simply head for the cleanest water you can find.” Launching is available at South Seas Resorts (if you are staying there) or from the Sanibel Island Public Boat Ramp ($5/hr. parking fee: 239-472-6397; 888 Sextant Dr., Sanibel.) Nearby, the ‘Tween Waters Inn is another good spot to spend the night. More info at www.FortMyers-Sanibel.com.

T
he ultimate knife for the multifaceted angler, the Bubba Multi-Flex Knife is my new go-to knife. For me, I love to fish all seasons of fresh and saltwater. Since the knife has four interchangeable blades, it fits my lifestyle. Living in South Florida, we are able to target all kinds of species. In the summer time we chase mahi, kingfish, deep drop for rosie, and go yellowtailing. Having multiple blades makes it convenient because, for instance, I can use the 7-inch tapered flex on smaller mahi’s and yellowtail. I like to filet my kingfish into steaks, so the 9-inch stiff or serrated is perfect

for cutting through the bone. I like to use the 8-inch Ultra Flex on more delicate fish, such as rosies. When fall comes around, I like to get out to the sword grounds and go deep dropping. Having this knife on board is a total game changer! When catching fresh mahi or bonito, I like to cut the belly to make a fresh bait. The 7-inch Tapered Flex is perfect for this! Another great use of these knives are for when we catch swordfish over 200lbs. We have to cut off the swordfish bill with the 9-inch serrated and then core it with the 9-inch stiff. As for freshwater, when the first cold

Pro Topwater Strategies for Redfish & Seatrout
P
ENN Fleet Capt. Chris Condon fishes the shallows around Charleston, South Carolina, where redfish are suckers for topwater lures. Low-light is the best time to throw a topwater, but Condon also employs the technique any time of day when fishing over oyster bars. “Topwater is the only way to fish without getting snagged,” he explained. He especially likes topwater fishing in calm conditions with no wind, when the lure has the best chance to get a fish’s attention. Condon’s favorite application is when a school of reds is crashing shrimp along a marsh bank. Condon will toss a Berkley J-Walker 100 a few feet ahead of the pack and wait for them to get close to start twitching the lure. For increased accuracy, Condon likes a 7-foot, fast-action, medium power Fenwick HMG Inshore. The rod is well suited to heavier lures and allows him to walk the dog with a tight pattern. Condon matches the rod to a PENN Clash II 2500 reel. The reel is
44

lightweight, with a full metal body to reduce flex. He said the HT-100 drag picks up smoothly, without sticking or surging, which could pull the hook. 700 miles away, Capt. CT Williams, a PENN Fleet Captain from Shell Beach, Louisiana, turns to topwater lures for gator trout. Williams likes a Berkley J-Walker 120. He fishes reflective lures—such as the blue and chrome “Blue Bullet” color—in low-light, and he’ll switch to Bone colored bait during the brighter part of the day. Williams said the biggest challenge to topwater fishing is hooking the fish. A big trout strikes with a violent explosion, shaking its head, and throwing water everywhere. It can be tough, but anglers should wait for the fish to start pulling the lure away before setting the hook. A trout’s paper-thin mouth requires a delicate touch. Williams suggested letting the tackle do the work. He likes a softer, parabolic rod with a long, slow bend. The rod absorbs the shock of the strike and prevents the angler
THE ANGLER VIDEO MAGAZINE
from jerking the lure out of the fish’s mouth. Once the fish takes off, Williams relies on a PENN Clash II with super smooth drag. With trout, the lower end of the drag pressure is more important than maximum drag. “Smooth drag through the range applies steady pressure through the fight,” Williams said. A lighter drag setting keeps the hook from pulling, while the softer rod absorbs the headshakes. Topwater fishing isn’t only effective, it’s fun. The excitement of watching a predator attack its prey gets the heart racing and blood flowing.

SEA DOO FISH PRO:
DOES IT FISH? S
hort answer: a resounding yes, but to really appreciate the fishability of this fun and efficient vessel, you’ve got to give one a try. We did, and fishing on this sleek powerful personal watercraft is more fun than you can imagine. Everything about this little vessel is fun, fun, fun and user friendly. We trailered it with a Honda Civic and launched at a “kayak ramp.” The detachable rear cooler easily converts to a great livewell, and the positioning of the rear rod holders enables a nice spread for trolling. And everything’s within easy reach of the driver or passenger. While the recommended navigational depth is officially 3 feet or deeper, the actual draft of this angler-friendly vessel is only 11 inches. We had no problem drifting and poling through very shallow water chasing bait. Yes, you can definitely cast a net from this vessel, which we did, and there’s ample storage for your net in one of the front hatches. The modifications on the Sea Doo Fish Pro are definitely angler
intuitive. As early owners of Sea Doos pioneered its use as a fishing vessel, the standards required became somewhat universal. The Sea Doo Fish Pro is the result of careful attention to the details these innovators added to their early Sea Doo models. If there are two words that sum up this sporty little vessel, they are “fun” and “efficient.” The Garmin electronics screen is easy to view and access while driving, and the achievable speeds on this powerhouse personal watercraft will blow your hat off. With a suggested retail price of only $14,999, the Fish Pro is a lot of vessel and years of fun on the water for the price. Another important attribute of this class of personal watercraft is access. BEACH MARINE BAIT PENS
ENGINEERED WITH PASSION
T
eddy Beach grew up racing and fishing. Teddy’s dad was a drag racer, manufacturer, farmer and entrepreneur. As such, Teddy grew up in the tool and die shop down the hill from their house. Mike Zimmer was their engineer at the time. He would run Teddy out of the drafting room because he got tired of the boy destroying erasers and asking too many questions. Engineering and manufacturing are in the family’s blood. Fishing is a passion, and they have fished all over Florida since Teddy was born. From bottom fishing for grouper and snapper off Fort Myers to sailfish and mahi in the Keys and marlin and tuna in the Bahamas, if they weren’t racing, they were fishing. Out of the combination of those two passions, Beach Marine Products was founded to provide the market with
innovative and professional saltwater fishing products. Beach Marine’s live bait pens are industry changing. With a sloped-bottom design and industry changing false bottom, these bait pens were engineered to reduce stress on baitfish. Heavy duty all 6061 aluminum construction with zinc anode assures a durable and long-lasting product. All hardware is stainless steel and doubled up, so there is no single point of failure. They are powder coated with no sharp edges to hurt or red nose baits. The Beach Blue color gives the pens a unique clean appearance as well as a calming atmosphere to decrease stress on the bait while holding. Large oversize doors allow access for cast nets and large dip nets. Beach Bait Pens come in many different
shapes and sizes ranging from a 30Gal round, to a monster 400Gal oval. Beach Bait Pens are tough just like the Anglers who use them every day. If you fish live bait, there is only one bait pen you should own. That is a Beach Marine Products.
