BEN MARTIN EDITOR IN CHIEF

Dear Reader, Ten years ago, a new publishing concept was born. At that time, the idea that a magazine could somehow become a franchise offering was so unique that at first it was difficult to explain. How could a fishing magazine have more than one edition each month? How could someone without years of publishing experience and substantial capital successfully launch a new magazine? Not just a magazine, but a fishing magazine, and not just a fishing magazine, but a free fishing magazine? Free? What? Ten years ago, we began developing the concept of a franchise publishing system that would allow outdoor enthusiasts the rare opportunity to publish a localized fishing magazine as a professionals. Today there are over 30 editions of Coastal Angler and its interior freshwater component The Angler Magazine throughout the continental U.S., Costa Rica and the Virgin Islands. Every month all over the country local co-publishers work with professional guides and charter captains to share their knowledge of what’s biting where, when, and how with you, our reader! It’s reliable intel that anyone who loves to fish would benefit from reading. And guess what? There’s a lot of people who like to fish. The purpose that this fishing magazine serves cannot be denied, and that’s why there are over 30 separate editions of this magazine being published every month. It is our pleasure, our honor, to present this fishing magazine to you at no cost each month. We actually earn a living by helping to spread the word about fishing. What a great concept. Just like you, we love fishing, boating and the outdoors. In fact, we’re absolutely wild about it. It’s all we want to do. It’s truly amazing how much we all love fishing. Love it. We do, you do, millions of people do! That’s why ten years ago we knew one fishing magazine was not enough. We are proud to be celebrating our 10 year anniversary this month. Our sincerest thank you goes out to all of our co-publishing partners, the guides and charter captains who write for the magazine, the businesses who support the magazine and make it possible for us to continue providing it for free and most importantly to you, our reader. Thank you for allowing us the opportunity to produce this FREE fishing magazine each month. ELECTRIC TRAILER DOLLY

SEASTAR SOLUTIONS JACKPLATES

If you own a boat, you know the stress of ParkIt360 Force 10K backing your trailered pride and joy into a tight space. With this in mind, we took it upon ourselves to take Parkit360’s Force 10K electric trailer dolly for a test spin. Right off the bat, we were impressed. Assembly was easy, and by connecting the trailer’s power harness to the Force, we were able to control the trailer’s brakes with the Smart Brake Control System, which provides control and safety on a steep grade. Also, the Bosch-designed electric motor supplied more than enough power to maneuver with little to no effort on the part of the user. The heavy-duty 4”-wide tires maintained traction on concrete as well as gravel and even in wet grass when loaded. The Force dolly proved its functionality regardless of terrain, and that could come in super handy for those parking boats, campers or anything else with a trailer ball where the concrete ends. But the most striking feature of the Force electric trailer dolly was how easy it made maneuvering the boat. With precise and easy-to-use controls, all the stress was taken out of navigating tight corners and turns in forward and reverse. We put the boat into spots we wouldn’t even attempt using a truck. Built of quality materials, powder-coated and compact enough to fit in the trunk of an SUV, Parkit360’s electric trailer dollies are a great tool for anyone who pulls a trailer.

With its Gen II Standard and Xtreme jackplates, SeaStar Solutions brings to market improved jackplates that handle up to 300 and 400 hp outboards, respectively, and are easier to install and adjust and stand up better to the marine environment. To handle heavier loads, advanced composite bushings allow for smoother movement of the hydraulic rams when the jackplate is raised or lowered, making SeaStar a superior performing jackplate at all speeds and loads. Both the Seastar Standard and Xtreme are available with 4”, 6”, 8”, 10” and 12” setbacks. Redesigned engine brackets allow mounting of shallow-water anchors on both models without the use of adapter plates. Redesigned engine brackets also improve access to the mounting bolts. Side access has been introduced to make it easier to get a wrench on engine mounting bolts while clearance to access transom mounting bolts has also been opened up, making it easier for one person to install the plate. Installing a SeaStar Jackplate with SeaStar’s ProTap system allows for precise, standardized height adjustment. Key to the ProTap system is the SmartStick sensor, which can easily be installed along the side of the plate. While adding strength and improving access, the new design uses less material for weight reduction of 15 percent over the originals. Thicker MilSpec anodizing of the aluminum frame and lift and effective sacrificial anode mounting points provide improved protection against corrosion.

here’s no Weight: 5,300 lbs. need to Max Capacity: 12 people compromise when you can have Fuel Capacity: 181 Gal. the best of both worlds. That’s the Max HP: 500 idea behind the Sea Deadrise: 20 degrees Chaser HFC Series, built by Carolina Skiff. With all the features required by hardcore anglers, the four HFC models are serious fishing boats when it’s time to fish. When it’s time to take the family out on the water, these boats convert easily to offer the comforts and amenities that make them excellent cruising boats as well. It’s all in the name. HFC stands for Hybrid Fish & Cruise. These boats were built from the ground up and designed specifically for the serious angler who is also devoted to family. Anyone who’s ever fished from a Carolina Skiff knows the company has designing fishing boats down pat. Over more than 30 years, they have earned a reputation for building the most durable, versatile, stable and economical boats on the planet. For this reason, there are legions of anglers who wouldn’t own anything but a Carolina Skiff. The Sea Chaser HFC is no exception. With the 20, 22 and 24 HFC, Sea Chaser offers great center consoles for fishing and cruising inshore and nearshore. The latest in the line, launched last year, is the 27 HFC. It has the size and range for blue water, while maintaining the features that make it a comfortable family cruiser suitable for long days on the water. The 27 HFC melds functionality, comfort, style and performance seamlessly. Patented box-beam construction produces a solid, durable wood-free hull with foam flotation that exceeds U.S. Coast Guard requirements. With 100-percent composite construction, it meets stringent durability and dependability standards demanded by Carolina Skiff, and the high-performance step-hull gets the boat up on plane quickly for a smooth, dry ride.

For an added feeling of safety, it features a 9.6-foot beam with a length overall of 27 feet and a respectable gunwale height. A fuel capacity of 181 gallons feeds up to 500 horses, which is more than enough to get you offshore where the fish are. This boat is loaded with standard features that will keep both your fishing buddies and your kiddos happy. They include: onboard windlass anchor system; wrap-around bow seating with 400-quart insulated storage; two built-in bow cabinets with tackle center and storage drawers; bow-floor 200-quart fish box; under-gunnel retractable wash down hose; molded fiberglass leaning post with 40-gallon baitwell and two tackle centers; rear 30-gallon baitwell; rear sink with stainless steel faucet; rear starboard cabinet with tackle trays and knife holders; freshwater tank with shower spray wand; step-in console with electric flushing head; molded hard top with LED lighting; speakers and electronics box; AM/FM radio with Bluetooth and USB connection; underwater LED lighting; courtesy LED lighting package; electric trim tabs; port side entry door; two rear foldaway bench seats; 12 flush-mounted gunwale stainless steel rod holders; swim platform with step ladder; and a whole lot more. It’s easy to see the 27 HFC was designed with both comfort and fishing functionality in mind. Like all the fine boats in the HFC line, it is the answer for the hardcore angler who doesn’t want to sacrifice on all the other fun stuff one can do out on the water. Gillz Performance Fishing Shirts With their Coolcore

Technology, Gillz has developed a chemicalfree, lightweight, cooling and sun protective shirt that is the No. 1 choice of tournament pros, guides and avid anglers all over the planet. Coolcore is 30 percent cooler than the competition. Gillz was able to achieve this remarkable feature through research and design of a patented fabric that wicks sweat and moisture away from the body in every direction to keep you dry and comfortable regardless of the conditions. While most cooling fabrics achieve this using any number of nasty chemicals, Gillz has been able to do it chemical-free through their Coolcore Technology. Gillz shirts cool better, last much longer and offer protection from the sun’s harmful rays (UPF). After extensive testing, the following observations were made: • The fabric is very durable both to extreme abrasion and many washings. • Coolcore is more comfortable in hot conditions and prolongs and positively enhances athletic performance. This is most notable when worn by endurance athletes during high aerobic activities. This is by far the most comfortable shirt our testers have ever worn in the heat.

Mag Bay Yachts Building On A Legacy Of Fine Boats

B

arrett Howarth, of Mag Bay Yachts, may be the only boatbuilder in the industry who can say one of his employees has changed his diapers. His parents, Mike and Patricia Howarth, have always been boatbuilders. Along with their partner Henry Mohrschladt, they created the venerable Cabo Yachts. Barrett grew up on the production floor. His childhood was spent in the shop, learning to build boats from the best in the business. Barrett was conflicted when Cabo was sold to Brunswick Corporation in 2006. “It was pretty tough on me and my dad,” he said, “because that’s what we did… build boats.” Through the heart of the Great Recession, when there weren’t many buyers for high-end yachts, Barrett worked in his garage, building and refurbishing smaller boats. Despite protest from his father, who knew how tough the business could be, Barrett continued pursuing his passion.

“At some point, I guess Dad decided, ‘If you can’t beat ’em, join ’em,’” Barrett said. In June of 2014, Barrett and Mike set out to build what became the first Mag Bay Yacht. Working with hull designs by Michael Peters, one of the most respected designers in the industry, they started work to produce a high-quality 33’ center console that is the embodiment of elegance and function. It took almost a year to get everything the way they wanted it before the first Mag Bay hit the water in 2015. Since then, a lot of travel, hard work, attention to detail and customer support have brought recognition to Mag Bay Yachts for what it is. The Mag Bay 33’ is a high-end, expensive center console, and customers expect and receive the best. Early success allowed Mag Bay to reassemble much of the experienced crew from Cabo, who they consider family. One of those employees changed Barrett’s diapers nearly 30 years ago. They are the same employees who presented Mike with a plaque that hangs in the shop and reads: “I will always build the very best boat—at a profit if I can, at a loss if I must—but I will always build the best.” Barrett said that’s the philosophy for every Mag Bay that leaves the shop. “We’ve always tried to build the highest quality boat on the water,” he said. “We’ve always prided ourselves on using the absolute best products. If there’s not anything out there that’s up to par, we’ll make it. Being a family boatbuilder, it’s not about numbers for us. It’s about building the absolute best boat.” In the near future, the family at Mag Bay Yachts has plans to go back to its Cabo roots in designing a new 42’ inboard express. It’ll be exciting to see what they produce. For more information on Mag Bay Yachts, see their website at www. magbayyachts.com.

s there anything more exhilarating than scrambling to recover line that’s buzzing off your reel and then landing a well-deserved bonefish? Believe it or not, there is: landing that bonefish and finding it has been tagged. Not only are you having the time of your life, you’re contributing to Bonefish & Tarpon Trust’s (BTT) ongoing bonefish research. Take it from renowned angler Meredith McCord, who recently caught a tagged bonefish off of South Andros while fishing with the Eleven Experience. Many are familiar with the term “tagging” due to projects like the Tarpon Acoustic Tagging Project, but BTT and collaborating scientists employ more than one type of “tag” when studying saltwa-

ter flats species. Research involving acoustic telemetry helps identify movement patterns and spawning sites, in addition to regional population and habitat connections that inform flats conservation. These acoustic tags do not, however, track health indicators like growth rate and sexual maturity—those data are found using something called tag-recapture. This particular type of tag resembles a small post with a diameter similar to that of a toothpick. Each individual tag is marked with a unique serial number and is inserted just below the dorsal fin. Scientists record the tag’s serial number and measurements specific to the individual fish—weight, fork and tail length, gender and any other observations about its condition. In keeping with best handling practices, researchers release the fish in hopes of another encounter. That hope was fulfilled when McCord caught a tagged bonefish in the Bahamas. She was able to record its serial number and length measurements before releasing it again. According to Dr. Aaron Adams, BTT’s director of science & conservation, and Bahamas Initiative manager Justin Lewis, bonefish spawn during full and new moons from October through April. The bonefish McCord recaptured was first tagged at a pre-spawning aggregation site in January 2015. Its recapture, over three years later, occurred 34 miles from the initial tagging location, which is not uncommon, since bonefish typically remain in or near their home ranges except when they leave the flats to spawn in deeper water. BTT thanks McCord and all anglers, guides, researchers and partnering organizations for their participation in research. Their enthusiasm, not only in tag-recapture studies but in all BTT research projects, is vital to the pursuit of specific and science-driven conservation outcomes for our saltwater flats fisheries.

Boats: They/You Have Arrived B ack in the mid-1980s, Scout Boats founder and CEO Steve Potts was a plant manager with boat builder American Sail. He had been in the industry since the age of 14, and he knew that one day he would be building his own boats. Scout is a true American success story. Working side-jobs, weekends and nights, Potts managed to save up $50,000 and launched his company in South Carolina. The first boat he built was a modest 14-foot fishing boat. It was a simple, functional skiff-like craft. What set it apart was extreme attention to detail and craftsmanship. Dealers and boaters noticed the fine fit-and-finish, even on a little fishing boat. It became very popular across the Carolinas and beyond. With those first boats, built in garages and barns, Potts began constructing the reputation that followed Scout Boats as it became one of the world’s most successful boatbuilders. From humble beginnings, Scout Boats has grown immensely and now offers a full line up of finely crafted and innovative inshore, bay and luxury offshore boats. Throughout the company, a culture of integrity ensures quality products and outstanding customer service. Take, for example, Scout’s flagship, the 420 LXF. It is a 42-foot luxury center console that is truly a landmark for the marine industry. No stone was left unturned in the design and development of this beauty. Its EpoxyInfused hull using Carbon/E-Glass provides improved superior structural stability, strength and a Class A finish for unsurpassed performance. There are countless unique features never before seen on a model like 420 LXF. With quad outboards and up to 1,675 max hp, it is a fishing machine laid out with the luxury of a yacht. That’s the idea behind Scout’s entire line, to build fishing boats with meticulous commitment to craftsmanship and design that allows them to be extremely functional fishing platforms that are low-maintenance, durable and as comfortable and beautiful as they can possibly be.

Later this year, Scout Boats plans to launch a new flagship, the 530 LXF.

Scout Boat’s flagship, the 420 LXF is a landmark luxury center console.

The commitment to excellence paid off as the world climbed out from under the Great Recession of 2008. While the boating industry was reeling due to the economic instability of its customers, Scout Boats launched 18 new high-end models. The company saw multiple years of 25 percent annual growth. With today’s economy chugging away and growing, the customer base for world-class boats is stronger than ever. That’s good for Scout, and it’s good for you—the angler who is finally in a position to purchase that dream boat. A decade ago, taking on boat payments was a frightening thought. Now that things have stabilized, buying a boat is a worthwhile investment in your quality of life. And when it comes to producing quality on the water, Scout Boats has the market cornered, whether it’s a 17-foot bay boat or a 42-foot center console. n lakes where there is a lot of aquatic vegetation, such as hydrilla, lily pads, reeds, etc., the bass depend on it for cover and prey. With all of this cover, there is an excellent opportunity for catching big bass on hollow body frogs.

Using the right equipment is essential for hooking and landing big bass out of heavy vegetation. When choosing a rod-and-reel setup, a rod with a soft tip and a lot of backbone in lengths of 7’2” to 7’4” is a must. Sixty-five pound braided line on an Abu Garcia Revo STX high-speed reel is essential for pulling the big bass out of the thick cover. It seems like every lure company has a hollow-body frog in their lineup and every color in the rainbow. I prefer the more natural colors in browns, greens and blacks, and in clear water, when the bass are keying in on the edges of cover more, a translucent, almost see-through frog. The two types of frogs I have been most successful with are the popping frogs and the hopping frogs. The popping frog is designed with a concave mouth that generates an attention-grabbing and enticing chug. Some baits that I have found that work well in this style of frog are a Strike King Popping Perch and the Booyah Poppin’ Pad Crasher. These styles work really well during the postspawn, when the bass are starting to guard their fry and can really generate some explosive strikes. The popping frogs work well when fishing course pad fields where you need to pull the bass to the bait by popping the frog to generate a loud chugging sound. Give the bait a pause of three to five seconds to allow the bass time to come to the bait. The hopping frogs have a pointed nose that is more subtle and can be fished faster. By twitching the rod tip, you can make it move faster to generate a more explosive bite. This works well when the bass are more aggressive. The bait can be worked quickly and efficiently to cover more water. My favorite hopping frog is a Strike King KVD Sexy Frog in tiger color. You can cast it a long way, and the quality Gamakatsu hook in this frog is second to none. Give frogging a try this summer. Remember to be patient. The explosive strikes are well worth the wait. For an awesome frogging adventure on Lake Seminole, call Paul at 850-264-7534 or email paultyrefishing@yahoo.com. He is based at Wingate’s Lunker Lodge. They have cabins, rooms and campsites on Lake Seminole.

very once in a while a timepiece comes along that’s so incredibly good looking, masterfully equipped and jaw-droppingly priced, that it stops us stone cold. A watch that can take you seamlessly from the 18th hole to the board room. A watch that blurs the line betweens sports watch and dress watch. We’re talking the Blue Stone Chronograph, and it sits at the top of the discerning gentleman’s watch list. Striking in appearance and fully equipped with features, this is a watch of substance. The Blue Stone merges the durability of steel with the precision of crystal movement that’s accurate to 0.2 seconds a day. Both an analog and digital watch, the Blue Stone keeps time with pinpoint accuracy in two time zones. The watch’s handsome steel blue dial seamlessly blends an analog watch face with a stylish digital display. It’s a stopwatch, calendar, and alarm. Plus, the Blue Stone resists water up to 30 meters, making it up for water adventures. A watch with these features would easily cost you thousands if you shopped big names. But overcharging to justify an inflated brand name makes us blue in the face. Which is why we make superior looking and performing timepieces priced to please. The rivers here in the mountains of South Carolina are in great shape. A few big spring rain storms put a good amount of water into the rivers, and now the height and flows are great for wading and catching many fish. There is nothing finer than being here on the rivers with the mountain laurels and rhododendrons in full bloom. Hatches have been subtle at times early in the day, but late afternoon into the early evening have been better. As the late afternoon temperatures subside, find the shaded runs and riffles to have your best success. As the day time temperatures of late spring into early summer start to rise, we must remember that trout like colder water. From the start of daylight until mid-day, fishing topwater will be good, but as the temperatures rise, going deeper will be more successful. When fishing mid-day throughout the afternoon, double nymph rigs will be the trick. If the dry flies and nymph fishing is not your cup of tea, let’s not

forget about streamer fishing. There is an abundance of small baitfish in the rivers now, and streamer fishing is excellent. Try swinging streamers in the deeper runs and into the heads of pools. In the larger, deeper, slower waters, casting out and then using a slower strip and pause technique will do best. As the water temperatures of the rivers have risen, it’s also time to think about bass and panfish. We are excited about the bass and panfish season out on the lakes and rivers. We have a lot of new fly patterns here at the Fly Shop! Topwater or “down under” patterns are here, and more to come in all summer long. Rods, reels, line and anything else you may need for your warm water fly fishing needs are here at the Fly Shop. If you need a way to cool off from the summer heat, book a boat trip with our guide Zach Hart, for one or two people on the mountain lakes to catch these fine summer fish on a fly rod. On your trip, we’ll show you where to target fish, what to fish with, and we have the gear for you as well. We hope to see everyone out on the rivers and lakes, and let’s remember, “Leave no trace” and enjoy the greater outdoors.

Local Rivers & Fly Fishing

June Fly Fishing Report I am sitting here writing this report in May and spring has FINALLY arrived with water temps climbing into the low 70’s.In a normal year, striper fishing for the month of June is over for most fly and light tackle anglers. However, due to the late spring-like weather finally settling in, the striper fishing on our area lakes MIGHT still going strong for fly anglers most of the month of June. For those wanting to pursue Lanier’s stripers in June, the south end will certainly be the area to concentrate on. Sinking lines will certainly be your best choice once the sun gets up. Low light can still get you a few bites tossing a Pole Dancer fly on a floating line or launching Super Spooks and Redfins on conventional tackle. After the sun gets above the tree line, it is time to start looking in the river channel off of long tapered points that kind of butt up to the deep water.

June is also the BEST month for topwater spotted bass on Lanier. Go to any point during low light and toss any topwater fly like a Gurgler, Flat Fred or Crease fly and enjoy one of the Lanier’s most fiesty combatants. If you happen to see some topwater activity, then try to toss your fly or lure into the melee as spotted bass are suckers to leave a bait to grab your artificial. This is just perfect for a six or seven weight outfit and this bite will continue throughout the entire summer. Another place to target these fish are on humps that are between twenty to twenty five feet below the surface. If you own a Humminbird depth finder along with their lake master chart, you can pre-set your machine to find all the humps Lanier has to offer (contour highlighting). It is THE BEST asset for anglers to help locate the humps that the bass acclimate to. North GA anglers can also look to June for three things: Allatoona

topwater hybrids (hopefully), Chattahoochee River striped bass and Hooch carp. This is the time when most fly anglers decide where to fish based on the weather report. If the reports are for bluebird skies and light winds, then carp needs to be in your plans. If the reports are for fairly light winds and overcast skies, anglers need to hitch their trailer and head up to Lake Allatoona. The hybrids might be knocking bait up on the surface in gigantic schools! This is one of the most fun fishing trips a fly angler can make in North GA. Anglers need to bring an intermediate fly line and a small 1 ½” to 2” long fly for best results. I am particularly fond of my Albie Anchovy fly for this fishing or a Somethin’ Else as a second option. Conventional anglers can fish the same fly by affixing it to a popping cork rig or using a casting bubble filled with water on their spinning rods. It is a deadly combination that is sure to put a few fish in the boat. Finally, anglers can also start fishing the Hooch for either striped bass below Morgan Falls Dam or carp above Morgan Falls Dam. Stripers will be feeding on small baitfish, and it is best to toss an intermediate line on the river. I prefer the northern breeches of the Hooch for river stripers early in the season. Lastly, river stripers always seem to feed best

when the water level in the river is coming down. If you can plan your trip accordingly, finding them is not all that hard. Carp fishing should be fished during daylight hours when the sun is shining high for best visibility. Small crayfish patterns as well as Damselfly nymphs are going to be your flies of choice. They are a spooky combatant, but for those anglers liking a challenge, this is the game fish for you. With all the rain we’ve had the past 6 months, it is nearly a certainty that the Corp of Engineers will be releasing water all June and July which allows the carp to come up and onto the flats. June is one of the best months to fish here in North GA as anglers have many choices. See you on the pond (or river).

Casting for Recovery by Lynn Lomas “I’ve always known that nature was a place to recharge, but being there, with other survivors, made it feel even more healing for me.” Former Casting for Recovery Participant. This resounding sentiment echoes among the women who have participated in Casting for Recovery’s retreat weekends. Casting for Recovery (CfR) is a four star rated 501c3 non-profit that offers fly fishing retreats across the country for any woman who has had a breast cancer diagnosis. This year CfR will hold 60 retreats in 45 states and reach 840 women of all ages, in all stages of breast cancer treatment and recovery. It is the mission of Casting for Recovery to enhance the quality of life for women with breast cancer through a unique retreat program that combines breast cancer education and peer support with the therapeutic sport of fly fishing. The program offers opportunities for women to find inspiration, discover renewed energy for life, and experience healing connections with other women and nature. Instead of days spent focusing on health issues

and treatments, participants find themselves in a safe, relaxing and enjoyable atmosphere. For many participants, fly fishing is an altogether new environment, one where they would not have thought to find themselves. Casting for Recovery was founded in 1996 in Manchester, Vermont, by a breast reconstruction surgeon, Dr. Benita Walton and a professional fly fisher, Gwenn Perkins-Bogart. For women who have had surgery or radiation as part of their breast cancer treatment, the gentle motion of fly casting can be good physical therapy for increasing mobility in the arm and upper body. Casting is therapeutic and helps with tissue regeneration. Couple that with the emotional benefits of connecting with nature, and you’ve got powerful medicine. This innovative and unique program focus has garnered endorsements from medical and psychosocial experts nationwide. The two-and-a-half day retreats incorporate fly fishing basics such as appropriate gear, casting instruction and entomology, with a sense of community where women can share their experiences with other survivors. The grand finale of the

weekend is a half-day of guided catch-and-release fly fishing. These innovative retreats have been described by many women as lifechanging. The Georgia program now offers two retreats each year held at Smithgall Woods in Helen. Our spring retreat is for any woman who has ever had a breast cancer diagnosis. The second retreat occurs in the fall and participation is limited only to women who have stage IV metastatic breast cancer. CfR relies on the support of more than 1,600 volunteers nationwide, including medical and psychosocial professionals, fly fishing instructors, and alumnae. Casting for Recovery is supported by donations from individuals, corporations, community organizations and foundations who make it possible for CfR to provide these programs at no cost to partici-

pants. Levels of financial support to CfR Georgia provides the following: $25.00 Purchases a fishing license for one breast cancer survivor $100.00 Provides printed material for a retreat $1,000.00 Sponsors one breast cancer survivor at a retreat $3,000.00 Provides all meals for one retreat $7,000.00 Provides lodging for one retreat $14,000.00 Funds one retreat. Includes lodging, meals, psychosocial and medical facilitation, educational components, fly fishing gear and instruction. If you would like to make a donation in support of CfR Georgia, please visit our donation website: https://donate.castingforrecovery. org/campaign/casting-for-recovery-georgia/c166253

Local Rivers & Fly Fishing Casts That Have a Kick

The Guide's Angle

Rene J. Hesse Certified Casting InstructorFederation of Fly Fishers & Atlanta Fly Fishing and Camping Meetup Organizer Have you tried to make casts with a Wooly Bugger, Dumbbell Eyed or weighted fly and have the end of the leader ‘kick over’ and swing around at the end of the cast? Have you noticed being accurate with a weighted fly is often difficult? What causes that fly that is traveling towards the target to suddenly go off to the side for no apparent reason? Have you come up with the reasons in your mind yet? Here is thing that usually caused this to happen: the leader. Check it out next time you tie on a weighted fly. The leader construction can be quite the science, but here is a simple way to combat the kick. When you have a heavy leader to turn over the loop with the heavy fly, it will often carry all of the energy to the fly without much energy dissipation. That energy shocks the end of the leader and kicks off to the

6 ATLANTA

JUNE ATL.indd 6

JUNE 2018

side. If you see the kick and can’t correct it by applying less power to the cast, try this. Adjust the length and or the diameter of the tippet. Here are two ways to make the adjustments. If you need to stay with the heavier leader, i.e. a 0X, for a bigger fish, try adding another 18 inches of the 0X. Transferring the energy over a longer distance may be the answer. If that didn’t work, the other option is to take the 0X and add a length of 1X or 2X to reduce the mass profile of the line and reduce the energy transfer through dissipation. To put is simply, if you are getting a kick at the end of your cast, try reducing the power application of the cast. If that doesn’t do it, add a foot or two of leader. You will be surprised how easy it is to fix the kick. The joy of casting will return, and so will your accuracy.

Big Fish, Small Fish It seems that fly fishermen go through three phases in their lifetime on the trout rivers and streams the world over. When you begin, it’s all about quantity, and with this high number of fish caught, it usually translates to lots of action throughout your time on the water, not to mention substantial bragging rights. After some time, the practice of catching lots of average sized fish gets a bit monotonous. This is the next phase where quality becomes more important, and trophy huge sized fish is now the fascination. This challenge to catch “the big one” or “the

smarter fish” goes back to bragging rights again, but bigger is better for many anglers midway through their fishing career. The third phase is what we call the “full circle”, whereas the seasoned angler has likely caught his lifelong best monster trophy fish which satisfied his or her ego, and you are back to happily catching numbers once again. This full circle is fitting, as usually at this later phase of fishing you’re hopefully mentoring the next generation who is new to the sport and happily catching numbers with your friends or family members.

Local Rivers & Fly Fishing oconee on the fly

The Nighttime is the Right Time!

By Capt. Wayne Moore USCG www.oconeeonthefly.com It’s getting close to the best time of year on Lake Oconee for the fly fisherman from late June through late October! The pump back bite, when Georgia Power pumps water up from Lake Sinclair (usually from 6:00 am to 9:00 AM) creates a lot of surface activity because the shad are pushed upwards to the surface. I start these trips with surface flies, then switch to Clousers (a sinking fly), then put down the fly rod and pick up a spinning reel to go after the monsters with a jigging spoon. I can’t wait! Hybrids – Oh my! Fly fishing lighted docks at night is on fire. I use Henry Cowen’s Something Else fly for this on the 8 weight Scott Rod with a 10-pound tapered leader. Last Tuesday evening I caught ten huge white bass off one dock in a little over an hour; last night, two hybrids both pushing 5 pounds and, believe it or not, a 5-pound catfish on a fly. Call me if you want to give this a try. You will not be disappointed. For conventional tackle, as we roll into June, the spoon bite will be turning on, and for those who can stand to lose them, the umbrella rig bite is killer. I love the spoon bite, almost straight down, no casting and BIG fish! Crappie – Long lining near Lick Creek is awesome in June, but just remember you must go deep and over timber. Jiffy jigs with lite wire hooks help, but be sure to use your electronics to calculate how far under the surface the timber is and how deep your jig is running. It’s common to use a double jig set up with a 1/16 on top and a 1/32 on the bottom. Fishing over brush piles with live minnows is a great summer pattern, but you must find the brush piles in deeper water. Largemouth Bass –Henry Cowen’s Something Else fly is excellent in clearer water this time of year. I fish it on an 8 weight, 9-foot Scott

FULL SERVICE OUTFITTER

fly rod. I use an intermediate line with an Orvis Mirage, Big Game fluorocarbon, knotless tapered leader in either 10 or 12-pound. This rig sinks quickly and casts well. I have caught more fish on Oconee (of every species) on Henry Cowen’s Something Else fly than any other fly. Unless they are feeding on the surface, this is my go-to fly! Final words – Why fly fish? Well, ask the bow hunter the same question. He or she will likely say the challenge and rush felt in the success of harvesting a deer at close range. I offer combo trips, so learning is easy and you get the best of both worlds. Personally, I’d rather catch one on a fly than ten on a spinning rod. Once you learn, casting is a blast! I subscribe to the Lefty Kreh method (Lefty is an internationally known casting instructor who many consider the father of fly casting!) This method focuses on 4 principals that allow you to cast farther with less effort. Most importantly, fighting and landing a fish on a fly rod is an adrenaline rush like no other in fishing. The “pump back bite” will start in June. We are booking up quickly, so call 706-816-4281 or e-mail me at wmoore1700 @outlook.com and request your dates. Remember, we offer fly fishing and conventional tackle trips for the best of both worlds.

Local Rivers & Fly Fishing Understanding Your Trout Stream

A Great Place To Stay In Blue Ridge.

Contributed by James Bradley www.ReelEmInGuideService.com (706) 273-0764

I had a gentleman on the water the other day who basically asked me in an around about way about stream reading. Although I’ve written in detail about this in the past, here’s what I told him while we were fishing. Trout streams have signs that tell us where the fish are most of the time and where it makes the most sense to make a cast. These signs are not like street signs but rather understanding how the water is flowing or understanding water hydraulics. Learning to read a stream isn’t hard, and it is the one skill you will acquire as you continue to learn about trout fishing. It is a process of making educated guesses and eliminating areas of the probable no trout zones. I cannot think of anyone wanting to fish in the no trout zones. I’d rather be at the house on the couch than fishing these areas. Shelter is high on the trout’s radar. Shelter is usually found in deep water, obstructions like large boulders or even submerged logs. These are the places they will run to hide if spooked by anglers, birds, otters or any other natural enemies. Trout do not grow old living in shallow water. They become a meal instead! Fast water conceals trout and makes them hard to see. Don’t spend your entire day fishing a deep pool. Sure, trout are probably hidden down deep in them, but spend time looking for trout in the seams by the fast water. These fast water currents are known as “Runs”. Usually a feeding trout will be in the seam watching for insects in the faster water. They will dart up into the current, take the insect, then go back to their lie in the seam. I wouldn’t spend too much time fishing those hardwhite water currents. A stream is more than just simply the trout’s habitat. It’s also the vehicle that feeds them. Most trout streams have features like rocks and boulders that deflect the current and allows back

8 ATLANTA

JUNE ATL.indd 8

JUNE 2018

eddies. In front of that rock where the water is being split, there is a break where a trout may have its lie. It will not always be behind the rock. Many anglers have a big misunderstanding about this. Remember, it’s water hydraulics and how these currents are affected by obstacles. If you are new to fly fishing, take time to learn to stream read. Streams give you a lot of clues and learning these little secrets will be rewarding. I bet going home at the end of the day with a sore arm will be worth the time you spend learning to read the water. If you are wanting to try fly fishing for the first time, want the watchful eye of a casting instructor to help improve your casting, or are just unsure of what you may be doing, we have several guides that teach the “Art of Fly Fishing”, entomology, stream reading, etc. We are a full time fly fishing guide service with professional guides from across North Georgia. By Brian Lee leebrian16 @yahoo.com Water temperature: 70-74 degrees, lake level: full pool, clarity: stained/clear. The mayflies are starting to hatch in big numbers, so target those areas with fresh hatched bugs. Look for bream busting the water eating the bugs. Topwater and swim jigs will catch fish on the bugs in the mornings. Run and gun hitting as many fresh hatches to get as many quality bites. The bream should be done spawning, but you can still find some beds. If you come across a bream bed, chances are you’ll find a bass or two lurking nearby. Swim jigs through and around the beds will get quality bites. After the sun is high, you can flip docks or find any wood cover. Any soft plastics will work. A green pumpkin trick worm on a shaky head

is a top bait for fishing docks. As the day heats up, the bite will slow down, so just back off the points and slow down. Some quality spots and largemouth can be caught dragging a C-rig or any soft plastic. It’s getting that time of the year that the bass will slow down. Till next month, tight lines and remember to take a child fishing so they too can enjoy the outdoors.

Lanier Stripers

Forecast By: Steve Scott http://TeamLanier.wordpress.com/menu With water temperatures beginning to heat up in May, the stripers have moved from the backs and mid-creeks to the mouths of creeks foraging for bait on main lake points and in pockets, all with access to deeper water via ledges or traditional drop offs. They are positioning themselves close to the deeper cooler waters for the traditional June bite. June’s techniques would be bringing out our deep-water arsenal which consists of downlines and power reeling Ben Parker spoons. Our bait of choice for downlining is various sizes of gizzard shad from dollar bill size to mongos. Be sure to drop the bait to just above where you are marking fish in the clearings between the trees lines. If you drop the bait over the trees, be prepared

to act quickly as a hooked striper will head right for the trees and say goodbye to your catch. We are not ruling out blueback herring just yet, because in the cooler early mornings we can take advantage of pulling them higher up in the water column on weighted freelines 100 to 125 feet back between .5 to 1.0 mph. As the sun hits the water the stripers will head out to the deeper water. While we mention bait a lot, we really need to mention bait care. The type and quantity of bait you want to use determines the type and size of your bait tank. Your bait tank should be either round or have round-corners, but should not be square, as you want to have the bait constantly moving in one direction. You can determine the size of the bait tank for blueback herring by using the ratio of two bluebacks per gallon of water, times the number of gallons you can have in your bait tank. A twenty-gallon tank could only hold 40 blueback herring.

Another point to mention about bait care is the mixing of the different baits. You should use a separate bait tank for gizzard shad because they put out a tremendous amount of ammonia which can hurt blueback herring by contaminating the bait water. And lastly, you should be using some form of aeration with blueback herring like oxygen at a 1/32 setting on your regulator. Keep the lid of the bait tank partially open to allow the CO2 gases emitted to escape so that the bait can take the oxygen more freely. Tip of the month: You want lively bait, not bait that’s alive. Consider changing your bait frequently, especially with blueback herring. When you bring your line in to check for bait, replace it. Go to my website at TeamLanier.com for more tips. 404273-3481

SEMINOLE

Forecast By: by Paul Tyre paultyrefishing@yahoo.com The temperatures are finally warming up, and Lake Seminole is on fire! We have been catching some big bass on a variety of lures, and as we come into June, I think it’s the best month to catch a personal best on Lake Seminole with topwater baits like frogs and buzzbaits. When fishing a buzzbait on Lake Seminole, fish the bait around the topped out hydrilla closest to the deep water that has baitfish present. A Strike King Pro Model Buzzbait in white has been a good one so far. This bait has a unique squeak to it that pulls the big bass in for explosive strikes. You want to have at least a 7’ medium heavy rod with a soft tip and braided line for getting the bass away from the cover. Frogs are great around lily pads and over the top of matted hydrilla and scum. I prefer the Strike King Popping Perch fished around and through the lily pad fields on the lake. Working the bait with a chugging sound and a pause between to give the bass time to find

the bait, is working well. When fishing frogs in the pads, use at least a 7’ heavy action rod with a soft tip and at least 65-pound braided line to get them out. The Hydrilla Gnats Bass Club is starting a Thursday Night Two Fish Bass Tournament at Wingate’s Lunker Lodge on the first and third Thursdays of the month from 6:00pm to 9:00pm. The entry fee is $20 per boat with 90% going back for prize money. The first week’s turnout was great! The bream and shellcracker have been bedding all around the lake. They’re bedding in shallow water and biting worms and crickets. Miss Jane, down at Wingate’s Lunker Lodge, has both in stock. She’s open on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 6am to 6pm and has her phone number on the door of the store for when she’s not there and you need something. She’ll come right away and get you what you need. The crappie have moved out to the edge of the grass lines and are being caught on minnows and jigs in 10 to 12 feet of water. Miss Jane has minnows too, and she might be willing to catch the blue-eyed ones for you.

Forecast By: Dan Saknini, Lanier Crappie Angler’s Club. www.laniercrappieanglers.net Water temperatures are in the low seventies, with high sixties early in the mornings farther north. Fishing conditions are good. The fish are pulling out to deeper docks with structure. Keep in mind that the lake level is about 6” above full pool, so homeowners have moved docks in, and brush piles that are typically located inside the docks are now on the outside edges of the docks. It is an added bonus if you find a good sized brush pile outside the dock, especially if it is not in direct sunlight. In this case, stay thirty to forty feet away from the dock and cast

your jig to the other side of the brush. Jig it slowly over the brush toward the boat. You may want to experiment and let it fall a little into the brush. This time of the year, four pound high visibility line is very critical. One twenty fourth ounce soft body jigs and hair jigs are working well. Also, the bigger fish are moving onto stand-alone brush piles in the backs of creeks. Those brush piles are in twenty to twenty-five feet of water, topping out at ten to fifteen feet below the surface. As always, the more brush piles you hit and the more docks you fish, the better your chances of boating more fish. If a spot isn’t working, move on. Four to eight mid to large sized fish is about average per stop. So if your hits are yielding only smaller fish, move on to explore other docks or brush piles. Stay safe on the water and wear your life jacket!

Water temps are in the 80’s over most of the lake. Water is very clear and a couple of feet down. Bass: Fair - Topwater baits such as Pop R’s, Zara Spooks and buzzbaits can be effective for shallow and aggressive fish, especially around bream beds. Also you can try fishing rip rap around bridges with spinnerbaits, small crankbaits, and shaky head rigs. Later in the month, some fish should start showing up on deeper brush piles and road beds as well as the water warms. Try deep crankbaits or Texas rigged Ol Monster worms. Some spotted bass are being caught by casting Spot Remover heads loaded with shaky tail worms or just dragging a Carolina-rigged Zoom finesse worm or mini lizard around sloping gravel banks. These tactics normally works very well for numbers. Linesides: Excellent - Spawned

out hybrids and stripes showed back up down lake in good numbers. Expect the downline bite on live bait to be awesome! Some fish starting surface schooling on the main lake and can be caught on small crankbaits, topwaters, pop-n-cork rigs and Storm Swim Shad lures. Crappie: Good - Spawned out fish will typically move out and hold on deeper brush and structure or under docks. Try dropshotting minnows or shooting docks for the best results. Night fishing is usually good in June. Bream: Good - Bedding usually takes place on the full moon cycles in June. Look for shallow cover in the backs of pockets. Sandy flats and stump beds tend to draw the fish like a magnet. Use live pink worms, crickets and small jigs for the best results. Catfish: Good - Live and cut baits (and worms of course) fished on bottom will catch cats all over the lake, as long as fairly deep water is nearby. Jug fishing is also fun and productive. To target flatheads, go to a larger bait like a 4-5 inch bream or large shiner and fish the same areas..

Local Lakes & Forecasts Uncle Ben

by O’Neill Williams Until I was about 8-years old, all I had to use for fishing was a cane pole. I didn’t mind. It had black nylon line, a lead split sinker or two and a small simple straight shank hook. I kept it leaning up against the corner of the back porch next to the well. My cousin, Winifred, and I went fishing every day when we finished his chores. Anyway, I liked fishing with that cane pole. My cousin had one just like it. We would catch a bream or two, sometimes a little horneyhead, and maybe a catfish from the Tallulah River that ran out of Lake Burton, then through Lake Seed and Lake Rabun and before it formed Tallulah Lake. There was no bridge across the river in getting to the little dirt road to his house, so if the river was low enough and you were driving in the old pickup, you simply ‘forded’ across the rocky bottom. There was a ‘foot log’ with a walled up little platform full of big rocks in the middle of the river where the two logs joined. My cousin and his dad, Paul, had nailed a 2 x 6 on top of

the log to give it a flat surface to make the walk much easier. There was a water snake that lived in rocks. We looked for him when we walked the log. We’d walk along the railroad tracks that crossed in front of his house for about a mile, then over the railroad trestle that still stood above the river and fished in the deep hole under the tracks. Our bait was red wigglers and an occasional night crawler we dug up from the area around the barn. We’d put them in a Prince Albert tobacco can. I went there for couple of weeks every summer with my grandparents. They were both from the Clayton, Lakemont and Wiley, GA area, so the summer visits were a kind of a going home of sorts for them. For my cousin and me, it was playtime every day. Back to the cane pole. My cousin, Winifred, would keep it handy and did not use it until I returned the next year. It was just like I left it on the porch, in the same spot. Fast forward to age 10 and with a couple of more summers adding to our adventures. By that time, we’d already graduated to walking the four miles to Lake Rabun and fishing off the steep rocky outcroppings. There I

caught my first warmouth bream. It looked like an oversize bluegill with a big mouth. We took it home and cooked it as a supplement for suppertime. My great Aunt Cleo, Winifred’s mother, cooked on a wood stove. Enough about the cane pole. This story is about my Uncle Ben. In the fall, around the time of my birthday, when I turned 11, my Uncle Ben came by the house one afternoon. We lived in a little house in south DeKalb County, and he asked me if I would ride with him to downtown Atlanta and help him pick out a rod and reel. Wow, I was thrilled. We drove down to Sears and Roebuck on Ponce De Leon Avenue across from the old Atlanta Cracker’s ball park. When I was a senior in high school, I played baseball for the state championship in that old park and got a triple on my first at bat. That’s another story also. Back to the visit to Sears. We picked out a Ted Williams’ model Shakespeare open face reel, a matching rod, spooled it with braided nylon line, a little plastic Old Pal tackle box and even put a few hooks, a box of split sinkers, a red and white plastic clip-on float and one

Lazy Ike lure for bass fishing. I was so proud to be able to have a hand in such crucial choices, and was surely grinning ear to ear. Uncle Ben was all fixed up. He’d probably spent $15 all at once on fishing tackle and I was impressed beyond belief, never having witnessed such extravagance before. We parked in the driveway at my parent’s home. I piled out and ran into the house to show off all Uncle Ben had bought. After the description and viewing all the selections, Uncle Ben fell silent. He’d had the idea all along. Once all the fabulous purchase had been lined up neatly for all to see, he gave it to me. That was 64-years ago. Uncle Ben is gone now dying on my birthday 7 years ago, but here I am telling the story to you. Why? If that event is so marked in my memory and has for so long and meant so much to a little wideeyed fisherman, I shout it out again to encourage you to be an Uncle Ben to as many little boys and girls as you can. Take the challenge and follow his lead. Make a little boy or girl happy with an outfit to fish from the bank of a small pond or creek. Maybe they’ll write about it one day.

Forecast by: Capt. Wes Carlton Georgia Lake Fishing 770-318-9777 www.georgialakefishing.com Water temperature: 72 degrees, lake level: full pool, clarity: clear. Bass: The bass bite has been great over the last few weeks. The warmer water temps have these fish feeding for several hours throughout the day. We have caught fish on everything from plastic worms to topwater Spooks. Most of the post-spawn fish seem to be feeding in 9 to 18 feet of water. Look for this bite to change quickly as the water is heating up fast. The underspin bite will soon pick up for the spotted bass. The largemouth swimbait bite will be an early morning bite as we roll into

mid-June. Trout: The brown trout have started schooling over the main lake channels. These fish have been chasing the small blue back herring schools up and down the lake the last few days. Sight fishing this time of year can produce some really big fish. My favorite casting lure is a Kastmaster spoon on light 6-pound line. We typically let the spoon sink for only a second or two and then work a jerk style retrieve back towards the boat. Just be prepared for that freight train bite. We have also caught some 5-pound spots with this technique. Look for the brown trout to start feeding early morning and later in the day over the next couple of weeks. The trolling bite should really be good as we head towards mid-June. Good luck!

Local Lakes & Forecasts Covering Water Contributed By: Jay Striker www.jaystriker.com It may seem like eight hours is a long time to fish, and to some it may be. However, in competition bass fishing, eight hours can come and go in what seems like flash. One of the most productive techniques that I use during a competition is what bass anglers call “covering water”. There are times when fishing a tournament that you have to work a bit harder and more efficient, so covering water is one of those techniques that allows you to do both. Let’s dive into this very important practice and look at where to go, where to start, lure selection and time management. What does “covering water” mean? It means going from point A to point B efficiently and making the right cast that gives you the highest

percentage to catch fish while rapidly covering water. The key to this technique is to ensure you hit the hotspots around the targets, cover and structure which you are fishing. Where do you begin? For me, the process of covering water comes to the forefront when certain conditions have presented themselves. One of those situations is when I’m on a new body of water and I have not had the chance to put in a practice day. More importantly, and often the main reason, is having to cover water because the fish are not doing what they were doing the day before, meaning they have moved. Either one of these situations may have occurred. Lure selection: You just can’t put

any bait on when covering water. Knowing what type of baits to use actually depends on the situation. If I’m targeting fish in the 8-10 foot range, that means I need to pick baits that fit that range such and crankbaits that dive to that level and cover the areas that give me the best chance to catch fish. If during my search process I happen to catch a bass on a dock, then I’ll try and duplicate the effort on the same type docks so that I have eliminated all other docks that do not have the same pattern. Be sure to choose the baits that are natural and allow you to cover the water faster. This also goes for points, rip-rap, lay-downs or whatever the cover may be. Time management: Covering water can take a lot of time if you don’t know how to manage the time you have. You can’t cover every inch of water in an area that you only have 10 minutes to fish. How long I spend fishing an area really depends on if I think the fish are there, or if I see them on my electronics and believe I can catch them. There is an easy way to be sure that your time does not get away from you and

that is to set a timer. When it goes off, you can move to the next area so that you can be productive. Learning to cover water rapidly in a tournament gives you the ability to eliminate water faster and make you a much better decision maker on the water. Knowing when, why, what lures to use, and managing your time can be the key to turning a tough tournament into one that you can be glad you learned to “cover water”. By learning to use this technique, I believe that you can be more successful on the water. Local Lakes & Forecasts fishing with children Dr. Andrew Cox June is the advent of the summer school vacation time period. Children are looking for activities to keep themselves busy. Fishing could be a good activity for them to engage during the summer months. I was reminded of this by my grandson, Jonathan. He resides in East Alabama and has been interested in fishing for about two to three years. This interest is certainly something that I want to encourage. He now asks me to go fishing. I try to expose him to a variety of waters and fish species. He has been fishing for trout in North Georgia and Tennessee, inshore saltwater for redfish and speckled trout, bass and panfish in local lakes and reservoirs. When taking a child or young person fishing, they are not going to approach it the same as an adult. Their attention span is going to be

much shorter, and they will require fish action to maintain their interest. Consider the following points when taking young people fishing: • Use fishing equipment appropriate for the child’s skill level and size. They may require starting out with spincast reels and shorter rods, then later graduating to open face spinning reels • Target fish that are easy to catch in order to maintain the child’s interest. • Shorten the fishing day; do not expect to spend the entire day from sun-up to sundown fishing with a child. Short time periods are in order to maintain interest. • Be prepared with drinks and snacks for use over the course of the fishing day. • Be prepared to take frequent bathroom breaks.

• Plan to go fishing only when the weather is good. Children will most likely not enjoy being outdoors when it is overly hot, cold, or raining. • Plan to use a variety of baits to include both artificial and live baits. Be prepared to tie knots, rig tackle, and bait hooks. You may also be required to make some casts for the child if they are unfamiliar with the equipment. • Do not expect the young person to cast perfectly. Prepare for line tangles and hooking up on shoreline and underwater obstructions. Try to pick open fishing locations to minimize tangles. • Expose young people to conservation and protecting the fishing locale. Do not litter and discard used fishing line, bait holders, drink and snack containers in trash receptacles or take it back home with you to be discarded properly. Take a small trash bag with you to collect your trash as well as some that may have been left behind by others. Make it a better place than you found it. • Be patient and flexible; the fishing experience is supposed to be fun. The child if inexperienced

with fishing is going to make mistakes. • If you catch a fish, consider handing off the rod and reel to the youngster allowing him or her to fight and land the fish. • If going on multiple trips with a child, visit different waters and target a variety of fish species. The child may develop an interest in a particular body of water. • Be safe. Watch the child carefully and use life preservers if necessary. Exposing young people to fishing can become a lifelong interest. The future of angling and the waters that we fish today will require future generations to show an interest and protect them. You may find that you have a new fishing partner. Author’s Note: Dr. Andrew Cox is a contributing writer to outdoor publications and newspapers. He is a member of the Georgia Outdoor Writer’s Association. He has been fishing the waters of Georgia, Alabama, and north Florida for over forty years. Dr. Cox financially supports his fishing habits as Professor Emeritus at Troy University, Phenix City, Alabama. He may be contacted at andrewtrout@aol.com.

Summer is finally here. The weather is beautiful, the water is warmer, and the fish are going crazy. It’s the perfect time to hit the lake and catch some amazing fish! What’s the best way to do that? By booking a trip with North Georgia’s #1 striper guide service: Big Ol’ Fish Guiding Service. Lake Nottely is unbelievable for summer striper fishing. There’s nothing like starting your day off with an explosion of stripers slamming all your rods. It’s not uncommon for us to boat 20-40 fish per trip out here on this serene North Georgia lake. Currently, Lake Nottely is at full pool. Water clarity is clear and slightly stained in the backs of creeks, and water temps are in the mid to upper 70s. Striper fishing remains excellent. The early-morning and evening bites are your best times to see action. In the earl-morning hours, we are still pulling planer boards and free lines with live blueback herring. Keep your free lines 100150 feet behind the boat, and stagger your baits behind the boards. As the sun comes up in the later morning

hours, start to focus on deeper water. Switch to downlines and add a little split shot to your free lines. Target creek mouths and points off the main channel. As the topwater bite has also been excellent, keep a Spook or a RedFin at the ready to snag those surface-busting fish. By mid-month, these fish will really start to school up, and we’ll switch to an all downline bite. Just remember to keep an eye on your electronics and watch for schools of stripers. Also remember to try to get the fish back into the water as quick as possible. June is a fantastic month for catching some monster stripers this North Georgia lake. Give Big Ol’ Fish Guiding Service a call and let the area’s #1 rated guide service put you on some of Lake Nottely’s best trophy fish during the fishing trip of a lifetime. We are Blairsville, GA’s only full-time guide service, specializing in striped and hybrid bass. We also serve Lake Chatuge, Lake Hiwassee and Lake Blue Ridge. For all your live bait and tackle needs, check out Hughes General Store in Blairsville, GA. They carry everything you need for a successful day of fishing and the best live herring around. So, come fish with the pros for the opportunity to be featured in The Angler Magazine. Let us help you get your fish on!

Lake Oconee

www.oneilloutside.net

Ken Sturdivant ken@southernfishing.com Lake Oconee is full with the water temperature in the 70’s. Bass fishing is excellent. The shad spawn is all over the lake. Lots of spawning shad on the rip rap on the bridge, so fish this area. The action first thing in the morning is fast, so have your bait ready to go. The shad are shallow at daybreak then move after the sun gets up, so be on the water at daylight. There are lots of good largemouth bass being caught on this pattern. A buzzbait, white spinner bait, or a ¼ ounce Rat-L-

Trap would be the bait of choice. A 3/8 ounce spinner bait in white with double willow leaf blades will work. Use in Lowrance Structure Scan technology to scout the areas before you fish. Even in 10 feet of water, this technology can scan 70 feet from right to left if you use left, right and down imaging at the same time. Fish this spinnerbait around any shallow water rocks. These fish are in less than 5 feet of water near the rocks. After the sun gets up, fish around docks and long points. Fishing a Carolina rigged worm in the watermelon seed or watermelon candy colors with a 24 inch leader along the bank will also catch fish.

Lake SINCLAIR BASS

Ken Sturdivant ken@southernfishing.com Lake Sinclair is down 1.02 feet with the water stained and the temperature in the 70’s. Bass fishing is great. Go shallow as the bass roam the banks in shallow water all day both up and down lake. They are chasing small baitfish up into the shallows and the baits need to be very small. Casting small worms and topwater lures can get a strike. If this schooling activity lasts all day, it’s a good idea to use small lures. Buzzbaits can catch a lunker. Using the Zoom lizards on a light wire hook or a trick worm cast

into the shallows can be productive. Use the Lowrance Structure Scan technology to scout the areas before you fish. Even in 10 feet of water, this technology can scan 70 feet from right to left if you use left, right and down imaging at the same time. The mini lizards should be in a dark red color or pumpkin seed. All white Zoom trick worms with the tail dipped in a red dye works around the docks all day. Keep a #5 Shad Rap ready for any shallow schooling up on the banks. Move around a lot as these fish are doing the same. As the day progresses some of the upriver fish are still active on points and around docks. The bone and pearl colors in the Bill Norman Little N crankbaits are fair.

“Bass fishing is great. Go shallow as the bass roam the banks in shallow water all day both up and down lake.”

Forecast by: Clay Cunningham www.catchingnotfishing.com 770-630-2673 Finally, we are getting some nice weather after several months of cold and wind here on Lanier. The water temperature is in the low 70s and climbing each day. The water has been very clear on the south end and slightly stained on the north end. Now that June is here, look for the stripers to progressively move deeper as the water temperature rises. At the beginning of the month, look for them to be 5 to 20 feet deep. You may still see some topwater action, so be sure to have a Sebile Magic Swimmer ready to cast. Day in and day out, it is hard to beat the Magic Swimmer. All the colors in the Magic Swimmer work. Early in the morning, the Magic Swimmer in white liner is hard to beat. A Storm Chug Bug in white or chrome and blue is also a good choice. Cast these

lures on 10 or 12-pound Trilene Big Game on a spinning rod. A good setup is a 7’ medium action Fenwick spinning rod paired with a Penn Conflict 3000 spinning reel. As the fish move deeper, look for the downline bite to take over. Spool up a Penn Squall Linecounter reel with 15-pound Trilene Big Game on a Shakespeare medium light action striper rod. Tie on a Capt. Mack 2 ounce swivel sinker, a four foot leader of 15-pound 100% Trilene Flourocarbon and a 1/0 Gamakatsu Octopus hook. Herring from the local tackle shops will be the key bait. Look for the stripers on your electronics before you drop baits. You can use traditional 2D sonar or down imaging to see these fish. Great electronics like the Humminbird units is a must. You can see your bait swim around the sinker. Overall, June is usually a great month on Lanier for stripers. The spawn will be over and the striper’s metabolism is wide open. See you on the water.

Local Lakes & Forecasts June is Topwater Time on Lanier! Contributed By: Jim “Jimbo” Mathley www.jimboonlanier.com It is hard to beat the topwater bite in June on Lake Lanier. Spotted bass chasing a topwater bait in wolfpacks is about the most fun a human can have. In this month’s installment, we will review the different options to take advantage of the incredible topwater fishing on Lake Lanier in June. Location: In June, most of the spotted bass have completed the spawn, and have transitioned into replenish mode. We have had a late spring here in Georgia, and this may push back the best of topwater action until later in June. Post-spawn, many fish will be relating to key features at the mouths of the major creeks as well as main lake areas, and can be found on key structure such as long running points and humps. Locating these areas and the man-made cover that is often found on them (Example – brush piles) which will often concentrate the

fish will be important to your success. Please contact me directly if you are interested in purchasing Waypoints of these key brushpiles. Lures and Presentation: Let’s examine some of the techniques and lures that can be used to catch these fish. 1. Topwater – There are many bait choices in the topwater category – poppers, walkers, wakers, etc., and the preference of the fish will change day to day. Excellent topwater baits for Lake Lanier include: Lucky Craft Sammy, Heddon Zara Spook, Storm Chug-Bug, and a Cotton Cordell Redfin. These lures as well as all the rods and reels you will need to present them can be purchased at local tackle shops such as Hammond’s Fishing in Cumming, GA. Make sure to check out those G Loomis rods and Shimano reels - truly world class tackle!

2. Swimbait – Swimbaits offer great versatility as they can be fished at any depth you wish. As far as the mechanical type swimbaits, my favorite is the brand new Sweet Herring from the Sweet Bait Company. Solid design along with laborious handcrafted work and acute attention to detail make this bait the top of its class. Vary your retrieve speed and depth with this bait until you find the retrieve for which the fish are searching. Look for these baits to be a big producer of monster spotted bass in June. 3. Super Spin from Super Fish – When the topwater/swimbait bite is tough, pick up your SuperSpin and go to work. Fish the bait over and around brush for your best success, especially when the sun is out. The sun will concentrate the fish in this type of cover and the SuperSpin offers the perfect solution for the finicky fish that won’t come up. 4. Worm and Jig – When the topwater/swimbait action slows, and you see fish in the brush on your Lowrance, try the worm and jig. I like the Picasso Shake Down heads and worm combinations. As far as jigs go, I prefer Chattahoochee Jigs. Explore different worm and jig sizes, shapes, textures, and colors when you are fishing. Something different presented appropriately can make a

big difference on certain days. Tackle: For topwater action, you should utilize either a medium to medium-heavy bait-casting or spin-casting outfit, rigged with 12 to 17-pound Seaguar monofilament line. Lighter poppers and smaller walking baits are often better presented on spinning gear which allows for easier casting of smaller baits. For swimbaits, I like to present the larger, heavier, mechanical type swimbaits on a heavy action rod that is at least 7 feet long, and I will utilize 20-pound test monofilament or Seaguar Fluorocarbon line. My big swimbait rod is a G-Loomis Swimbait Rod which is perfectly matched for these baits. G-Loomis also offers some outstanding topwater rods from which to choose. Check out the options at Gloomis.com. Don’t miss the opportunity to enjoy some of the best fishing on Lake Lanier during the month of June. I still have some dates available in late June, so call me or drop me a line to experience some of this incredible topwater action. See you on the water! Local Lakes & Forecasts Brown Fish, Green Fish, Nice Fish, Mean Fish By: Ryan Kennedy YouTube: Ryan Kennedy Fishing Instagram: ryankfishing ryankfishing@gmail.com

Fishing on a diversified fishery brings moments of excitement along with utter disappointment. After recently fishing a Bassmaster College Series event on Cherokee Lake in Tennessee, the different habits of smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, and spotted bass were made evident. When fishing in a tournament that offers a multitude of species eligible to be brought to weigh-in, a wide variety of strategies can be utilized to succeed. No matter where a tournament takes place, dock talk will always be around for the lingering ears of others. Big Fish Larry and Spinnerbait Sammy have always got plenty to say to you and the other anglers. In reality, there are endless possibilities to take advantage of in order to catch fish on any given lake, but a few will usually strike your fancy. Although one of your buddies may be catching heads flipping a jig in the shoreline brush, the next guy behind him is having success busting

smallmouths on a rocky ridge with a tube in twenty feet of water, and to top it all off, the next competitor over is catching spots on a jigging spoon on a mid-lake hump in forty feet of crystal clear water. “The Deal” is always going to be a little bit different for everybody. The same tactic that may get every spotted bass that bites in the boat may be an easy way for an acrobatic smallmouth to break your heart at the boat. Being diversified in your tactics for tackling these freshwater beasts is the best way to manage each one of these species at the end of a line. Without getting caught up in the dock chatter, follow your gut instinct to find your best plan of attack. Each and every rock, brush pile, log jam, tree, shoreline stretch, dock, and point is different than the others. Approaching every cast with an open mind and thinking like a fish is a surefire way to put more fish in the boat. Never getting locked down in one mindset allows

an angler to fish to the best of his or her abilities. With weather, winds, and water levels constantly changing, switching up the game plan on the fly can pay off big in the long run of a tournament or even on a day of fun fishing out on the water. Keep your head down, capitalize on

the flurries and grind out the droughts. There isn’t a fish around that can’t be caught one way or another. Trust your instincts and believe that every cast is THE ONE. In the meantime, get a game plan together, and keep that line tight with the drag screaming!

Website: NorthGeorgiaCrappieAnglers.com O’Neill Williams – Honorary Chairman Co-Chair – Lou & Lilli Meier North Georgia Crappie Anglers is pleased to again sponsor the Fall Children's Fishing Classic. This year we are looking forward to 100 children participating in the event on October 20, 2018. For some of the children this will be their first experience with fishing, but our goal is that it won’t be their last. To register for the tournament and be eligible for awards and prizes, each child/youth must be 6 -15 years old. Youths older than 15 are also welcome to fish in the tournament along with a Captain. Each registrant will be paired with a Captain to lead him/her into the wonderful world of fishing. Registration of the children and Captains is accomplished by filling out the appropriate form available on the blog above. Registration begins March 1, 2018. The event will be held on Saturday, October 20, 2018. Registrants will meet with their Captains early in the morning and then go fishing. Weigh-in will be at 12:00 noon, located at Bolding Mill Park, 4044 Chestatee Rd., Gainesville, GA. After everyone has enjoyed a complimentary meal, an awards ceremony will follow. 1st, 2nd and 3rd place trophies will be given for the largest fish in 6 categories: Crappie, Largemouth Bass, Spotted Bass, Striper, Catfish and Bluegill. Winners receiving their trophy will have their photo taken with O'Neill Williams. EVERY registrant will receive a new rod and reel and a Certificate of Participation to take home. If you have a child, grandchild, niece, nephew or neighborhood kid, please don't miss an opportunity to register him/her and be a part of this fun-filled educational event. Likewise if you are an experienced fisherman don't miss this chance to invite a child to go fishing. Some kids will be fishing from boats while others will be fishing from the bank or docks. As always, your child’s safety will be our first priority. There is a story of an old gentleman on his death bed and someone asked him "what do you most regret?" The old man replied "the day I wasted taking my son to the lake to fish, and we caught nothing." They then asked the son "what was the fondest memory of your dad?" The son replied "the time I spent with my dad the day he took me fishing".

Local Lakes & Forecasts Clarks Hill Striped Bass, Hybrids and Crappie by Capt Tony Shepherd and Capt Rocky Fulmer Little River Guide Service lrguideservice@gmail.com (706) 210-3474 The lake is currently at full pool for the first time in a while. There is an abundance of brush, grass and other cover that is now submerged and providing habitat for prey and predators alike. The herring spawn only recently kicked into high gear around the last week of April, but looks as if it will be ending soon. The herring staged in normal locations but stayed deeper due to cold nights. The majority of the stripers went ahead and carried out their false spawning activities and then returned to deeper water to recover. The majority of hybrids continued to follow the herring but will soon follow it to deeper water. Over the last few weeks, we have caught fish near the bank on shallow points and shoals only to find them 40 feet deep the next day when the shallows would not produce. There was a fairly consistent hybrid bite near the Thurmond dam and bait cove that was

mostly a low light event from 5am till dawn and again in the evening. Currently, the fish are in a transition stage, meaning some are shallow on the remaining herring, some are in the back of coves and pockets and some are holding on the deep edges of river channels. Be flexible for a while. The summer pattern is fast approaching. June fishing will be some the best and hottest action of the entire year. The early morning feast should be phenomenal and lead to nonstop action. Look for fish to gather on humps and saddles in the 24 to 30 foot range. Present them a lively blueback herring on a down rod and watch it bend. The Shriver Creek to Parksville area of the lake should be the most productive stretch of water.

Competitively priced full-day fishing charters for all levels of experience, equipment, bait, tackle and fish cleaning provided. Fish from the most comfortable, safe and stable boat on the lake.

A Day for Mothers

From some of my earliest memories, she has always been there. She was the one who fixed up my scraped knees and cut fingers, not only with Band Aids and Bactine, but with kind words and a gentle touch. As a boy, I spent the majority of my summer running around the creek that ran through the woods in the back of my house. She always kept a bottle of Calamine lotion around for the constant case of poison ivy that I seemed to keep as a child and a towel and change of clothes handy for the times when a misstep landed me in the middle of the creek. She administered the lotion with soft hands and soothing words and the towel and clothes with half-hearted admonishments. She took care of me when I was sick and always brought me a new comic book from the drug store where she got our prescriptions filled. She was the one who rocked me back to sleep when monsters and bad guys invaded my dreams. She did all these things with a patient and loving smile that I have come to know and love. Later in life, she helped ease the passage from adolescence adulthood with the same smile with a good measure of love and understanding thrown in as well. She helped me pick out a shirt for my first date and stayed up late waiting for me to get home, because she knew I would want to tell her all about it. She made my favorite breakfast on the morning I left to join the Marine Corps. I still remember her tears of pain as I left that morning for boot camp. I remember her tears of pride as she stood in the stands at Paris Island for my graduation. The pride on her face

touched a little with sadness for the fact that her little boy had indeed become a man. Her job could not have been easy, for at times I was a difficult child. I have brought many disappointments into her life. I once set our house on fire with a boyhood experiment, and more than once, I was caught at the fishing hole when I should have been in school. But her love never wavered. I still remember her squeamish and unsure smile as she took a picture of my first deer. She was the one I needed most when I experienced my first heart break. She held my head in her lap on the way to the hospital after I fell out of a tree and broke my arm. She never said “I told you so” when I tried to jump a picnic table on my bicycle and lost two teeth in the attempt, even though she had told me not to do it. I can recall very clearly, the strength of her embrace when I returned home from a war in a far off land. She has shared my triumphs, beaming with pride as she told anyone who would listen about my accomplishments. She has shared my failures and endured my shortcomings and there have been many of both. I am not the only one who has benefited from this woman’s kindness. She remembers the birthdays and anniversaries of everyone in her life and never fails to send a card on such occasions. She is the first one to offer help to those around her when trouble comes to call. She gives of herself to others until I often wonder how she could possibly have any left to give, and still she gives more. In addition to all this, she is a career woman. She has been a

highly respected employee at the same place for over 20 years. Yet the household she runs is second to none. Her angling skills have reached a level that few achieve; yet you will never hear her brag. She has been my shelter in the storm of trials and tribulations that life has showered me with. Her love has been the one constant in the ever-changing world that is my life. When life has pushed me to the brink of insanity, she has always been the lifeline that has led me back to reality. She has always encouraged my dreams, telling me that I could be anything I wanted to be, and I am.

She taught me how to tie my shoes. She taught me how to survive the harsh lessons of life. She is the person I turn to when those lessons are just too much. She is the angel that God sent to watch over me as I grew from childhood to manhood. She is my Mom. To my Mom; I find that my meager skills as a wordsmith are insufficient when it comes to describing the role you have played in my life. Nor can they truly express my gratitude for the job you have done as my mother. Thanks for all you have done and for all the times you were there for me. Happy Mother’s Day!

There are some fish that are finishing up spawning, and there are some that are on their way out to their summer staging areas. I’ve been starting my mornings out throwing topwater, with my baits of choice being a Strike King Sexy Dawg and a Whopper Plopper. I’m throwing these around brush, backs of pockets and spawning flats targeting the fish before they make their way back out to deeper water. There is also fish guarding fry around brush and docks. These areas are good places to throw a Fluke. Once the sun gets up, I’m targeting the long points and spawning flats with a tube, shaky head and jig in depths around 12 to 20 feet. As the water gets warmer and the fish go to their summer pattern, I will start

Guide Service shows off two trophies

Local Lakes & Tournaments Lake MARTIN Provided By: David Hare Alex City Guide Service 256-401-3089 Water Temperature: 84 degrees, lake level: full pool, clarity: clear. May has been another good striper month. We have caught a world of them on top with artificial and with live bait on top. It’s very exciting action when you’re catching trophy 20 to 40-pounders on light weight tackle. For June, expect some very early action out of stripers out in the open water. Occasionally, you’ll get late afternoon action, but right at dark the night bite gets busy in June. Expect to find a few around dock lights that will be catchable, but almost all of my night trips I fish the wide open waters and get the fish to come to me. To do this type of open water fishing, you should rig your boat with a nice LED light package. My personal favorites are the brand name Blue Water LED lights. My favorite nighttime live bait is the smaller gizzard shad rigged with a 2-3 ounce

weight, #2 circle hook and a fluorocarbon leader. Line and leader size depends on clarity of water and the size fish you are targeting. Try to use the lightest test line you think you can get by with. Most people do not have the capability to catch shad, or even harder, to keep shad alive, so just buy you a few black salties and try your luck with them. If night fishing or real early morning fishing is not your cup of tea, then get a couple downriggers and troll deep water with your lures running deep around 2-3 mph and you should be able to boat these awesome fish in June. Until next time catch one for me! For bookings, contact me at (256) 4013089

Lake Allatoona is at full pool (840 feet) and clear throughout most of the lake. The shad have spawned and schools of fry have moved into the main body of the lake. Look for surface activity as the go-to way to locate feeding fish this time of year. Surface temperatures will likely be nearing the mid-80s in June. Keep your offerings small for these surface feeders this time of year. Many of your bass and even some crappie lures will work on these fish. White, chartreuse and shad patterns are recommended. Impart fast, erratic action on your lures to mimic a fleeing, darting shad. Many times, larger hybrid and striper will be hanging out deep underneath the surface activity. It’s always a good idea when the opportunity presents itself to dangle a couple of live shad about 20 feet down on downlines to go for the big bite. For Allatoona’s bigger striper, try some planer boards at daybreak and long flatlines. The fish will be hitting bigger baits like medium and large gizzard shad. For rigging, simple is better. Run a 17-20# main line to a 5/0-6/0 hook. You may want to add a ¼ or 3/8 ounce split shot a couple feet above the hook to vary the presentation. Doing this will cause the bait to struggle a little more, putting that thump in the water that will call in the big girls.

The best way to hook a big gizzard is by opening the mouth and going straight up between the nostrils. For an alternate presentation, try going across the back in the “neck” right where the scales begin behind the head. Likely big fish zones will be the area in front of the dam, from Illinois Creek down to Bartow Beach and around Galt’s Ferry. Some big fish will reside in the upper Etowah from Canton to points north. PLEASE pay attention to the following: June marks a critical month for the striped bass in southern lakes. As Allatoona and other lakes begin to stratify, deep water oxygen levels begin to go down. Larger striper will begin to die from the stress of being caught when the surface temperature stays in the 80’s. By July, catching a striper over 10 pounds in the main lake means certain death. To do your part in conserving these great sportfish, catch and keep your daily limit set by the GADNR (2 fish over 22 inches), and then fish for something else. Unethical anglers will continue to catch and release large striper during the hot summer believing their fish are all surviving. THEY ARE NOT. If we all pitch in and make the effort to enjoy the resource without putting undue burden on it during the hot summer, we will all be rewarded with much better catch success when water conditions allow for ‘unlimited’ catch and release. HINT: Striper Soup Bait & Tackle has everything you need to hone your striper skills including the best live shad, equipment, and knowledge anywhere.

Local Lakes & Tournaments Lake Blue Ridge Smallmouth and Walleye By: Shane Goebel Big Ol’ Fish Guiding Service & The Angler Magazine Fishing Team www.bigolfish.com 828-361-2021, 1-844-4-ANGLER Lake Blue Ridge plays host to some of North Georgia’s best smallmouth fishing. June is a great month to hit the water. Currently, Lake Blue Ridge is 3 feet below full pool. Water temperatures are in the mid 70’s. Water clarity is clear in the main lake and stained in the creeks and rivers. We are still catching a lot of smallmouth and spotted bass all over the lake, with the majority of our smallmouth being caught in the Toccoa River area. We are still pulling planer boards with live blueback herring early. It’s also a great idea to set out a couple of freelines 100 to 120 feet behind the boat. When the sun really comes up in the mid-morning hours, we’ll switch to downlining live blueback herring. Most of our fish have been caught in the 15 to 25-foot range. This really seems to be the best technique for the larger smallmouth.

Look for large schools of smallmouths in the Toccoa River and Star Creek area. Live bait seems to be the key out here lately, but a jigging spoon and shaky head can’t be ruled out. Towards the end of this month these spotted bass will really start to school up and feed strong. When they start busting on the surface they will hit just about anything you can throw at them. In June the walleye will start to heading for deeper water. Look for these guys to be suspended off rocky points and on steep ledges throughout the lake. You can also find some stray wanderers on shallow humps. Downlining live bluebcks will work the best to target these guys. You can even bounce a few nightcrawlers 6 to 12 inches from the bottom. Also trolling crankbaits and jerkbaits will get you hooked up. When I decide to pull artificial baits, I always go to my Yo-Zuri Deep Diver, Shad Raps or Smithwick deep divers. Just remember to make some good S-turns and keep your speeds around 2 to 3 mph.

June is a fantastic month for catching some very big fish on this lake. Give Big Ol’ Fish Guiding Service a call and let the area’s #1 guide service put you on some of Lake Blue Ridge’s best trophy fish. And, for all your live bait and tackle needs, go check out Hughes General Store in Blairsville, GA. They carry everything you need for a successful day of fishing. Water temperature: high 60s, lake level: full, clarity: 5 feet. The stripers and hybrids have been doing exactly what they should be doing for this time of year, and that’s eating. Look for the hungry fish from the backs of the creeks out to the points depending on the time of day. In the early mornings, they seem to be in the very back chasing herring and big threadfin. Typical spread of 2 to 4 planers, flat lines and at least one down rod at 25 feet is the standard right now. I like to run my baits from 25 to 75 feet back. After you find what is getting bit, adjust the rest accordingly. We have seen some nice striper and hybrids this spring

with some really fat, healthy fish coming to the boat to be released. The spotted bass bite has been better then I’ve seen in a few years. We have put more big spots in the boat this past month than I thought was possible. For all of May, there was a fish on every piece of shoreline structure and submerged structure for us while fishing live bait on circle hooks. Lots of 2 and 3-pound fish, but what really has been impressive is the number of true 4-pound fish we have seen. If you are not into live bait, the artificial bite has been good. Swimbaits, drop shot setups, flukes and jigs have all brought in nice fish this past month. The walleye bite has been decent from day to day. One day you can catch 5 and the next day none. We caught them on live shad and flukes the past few weeks with the bigger fish coming on live bait. Shallow at night and deeper in daylight is their

outh Carolina legislators enacted new regulations in May for striped bass in the Santee River system. The changes extend the period in which striped bass may be caught and implement a slot limit for keeper fish. The changes to state law were signed by Gov. McMaster on May 3 and made effective immediately. Within the boundaries of the Santee River system (including lakes Marion and Moultrie), from Oct. 1 through June 15, it is unlawful to take or possess a striped bass less than 23 inches or greater than 25 inches, provided that one striped bass taken or possessed may be greater than 26 inches. Anglers fishing the Santee system from now until June 15 can still keep three fish, but they must be between 23 and 25 inches, or one of the three may be greater than 26 inches. The law also extends the legal period for keeping fish for two additional weeks—through June 15. Previously, the waters of the Santee system were closed to striped bass fishing between June 1 and September 30. The seasonal closure was started in 2008 to reduce the stress-related mortality of striped bass during the warm summer months. Length limits alone cannot protect striped bass during the warm season because catch-and-release stress results in a high rate of mortality.

“Let’s go fishing dad.” That’s all I needed to hear from my wife and daughter to get a boat ready. Wait a minute, I sold my inshore boat a few days ago. I have a tendency to do that being the owner of a boat dealership. Big Boys Play Toys Inc., in Palatka, Fla., has made it easy to get my hands on a new boat whenever I felt the need. “Well girls, let me see what I can come up with.” So I grabbed a 17 Mitzi Skiff powered by a Honda 50 hp and prepared the boat for a trip to the Intracoastal. We loaded up two girls, a 75-pound boxer named Cupcake and off we went. Basically, four people popped up on plane and off we went wiggling our way through the creek, dodging oyster mounds and grass islands heading for my favorite hole. The whole time I’m thinking, “I can’t put a scratch in this new boat or the value will drop.” That is when the Mitzi Mini Tower was conceived. I stood up on the rear deck to see the next obstacle that could devalue this beautiful Mitzi and realized this was the vantage point that every owner could appreciate. The fishing trip was a great family outing, but I had a mission now to create the best stand-up inshore fishing machine for the money. What better platform to work with than the 17 Mitzi tiller model with no console. Each one we build continues to get better as we take the advice of guides and customers and put that in the next one we build. The interior deck space is increased along with the poling platform being lowered and moved forward to create a leaning post. This makes the balance better when poling the boat. It’s a great machine derived from a need to protect your investment.

ith two anglers flailing away from either end of drift boat, there is huge potential for monumental foul-ups. A drift boat and a good oar-man can be flyfisher’s best friends, but there are some rules everyone must follow. TEAMWORK: If both anglers and the rower work together, things tend to go much more smoothly. The rower’s job is to position the boat so everyone is safe and the anglers have good casts to likely lies. He is the captain. For safety, the anglers must do what he says. If he is a hired guide, he should also know the river, which means he knows where fish hold. When he barks out, “long seam, river left!” he’s trying to help you catch fish. When he starts backstroking hard, be ready to cast. He’s seen something fishy. The angler at the front of the boat is in the catbird seat. His only duties are to fish well and occasionally look up to monitor for danger. The oar-man can’t see through the angler standing in the front of the boat. If you’re up front and see an obstacle you suspect the rower doesn’t, let him know. The angler in the rear is tasked with clean-up duty, and he’s also responsible for avoiding crossed lines. The front angler will be facing forward, which means he can’t see what’s going on in the boat. The rear angler must pay attention to what the rower and front angler are doing and adjust accordingly. Paying attention also allows the rear angler to do his clean-up duty effectively. By watching the front angler, the back angler can fish the good water his buddy missed. CASTING: Theoretically, if both anglers cast using the same angles, there should never be an issue with crossed lines. And, unless you’re streamer fishing, there isn’t a need to do a lot of false casting or even cast much at all. One of the cool things about fishing from a drift boat is you’re floating along at the same speed as the river. Making a 45-degree cast upstream of the boat allows your fly line and the boat to float along together. If you’re diligent in mending the line, you can achieve an almost infinite drag-free drift. Look out ahead, pick a good line, cast, and drift away. BOUNDARIES: Staying within the boundaries is important, especially when chunking and stripping streamers. It is hard not to aim and fire at the next good-looking run every time you finish a retrieve. Really, that’s what you should be doing… as long as you’re fishing within your boundaries. The angler in the front of the boat gets everything from the rower forward. The rear angler gets everything from the rower back. Staying within the boundaries can avert a lot of frustration and time spent untangling lines or pulling hooks out of the rower’s face. When you’re dealing with foul-ups, you’re not fishing. And when you’re not fishing, you’re floating past a lot of good water.

s always, it’s tropical, warm and beautiful down here in Costa Rica. The only change here is that the fishing has been white-hot. On the Pacific Coast, we mark our fishing seasons by the presence of two distinct feeder fish populations: dorado from November to June and yellowfin tuna from April to October. The months of April and May are a magical time when both Dorado and yellowfin are abundant. As much as we love coming home with full filet bags of multiple species, the real benefit is that the billfish are in town and they are feeding like hungry hogs. FishingNosara Hall of Famer Chuck Darner invited radio host Roger Walker for a fun week of action in late April. After lighting it up on the Harvester on the April 23, they moved up to the Wanderer the next day for a productive day offshore. Walker got it started with a 45-plus-pound dorado, and then hooked up a nice sailfish heavier than 100 pounds. Then Capt. William pursued a big school of porpoises that were feeding on yellowfin tuna. These dolphin schools are better measured in acres than numbers, and when they are packed in this thick, there is obviously something tasty just beneath the surface. Walker got in on the action with a beefy 50-plus-pound yellowfin, clearly the best fish of the day. Near the end of the day, they

hooked up another big sailfish, which put on an aerial display on the way to a safe release. Other boats on the FishingNosara team accumulated eight marlin releases during the month of April, including a two-release day for anglers Craig Sutton and Marino Lora on April 22. We are just beginning to see multiple marlin release days and expect things to ramp up as we approach the summer months. Speaking of summer, this is a great time to pack up the kids and get them down to Costa Rica for some sportfishing. As much fun as it is to spend three months playing video games and screwing around on the Internet, let the words of North Carolina angler Dan Bowman change your mind. “Best fishing trip EVER,” he wrote, “and I got to enjoy it with Chloe and Sophie, my 4- and 5-year-old daughters! We fought through a slow morning with a huge cubera snapping off on the reef to landing three sailfish in the early afternoon (the first two being a double hookup which was super exciting) to be followed up with a monster dorado on the way home. My girls had the best time ever, as did I! Memories to last a lifetime. Thank you and your crew for being so accommodating! Can’t wait to come back and go out again!” It’s a great feeling to see youngsters get their first taste of blue water action; it means that our sport has a bright future.

What Everyone’s Saying About U.S. Power Squadrons —America’s Boating Club

W

hether you are a first-time boater taking a class to learn the basics or a long-time liveaboard looking for a community of likeminded souls, you’ll find a place in the United States Power Squadrons – America’s Boating Club. The joy of boating is shared by everyone involved in the country’s largest nonprofit boating organization. America’s Boating Club has built its membership up to over 27,000 by offering classes For Boaters, By Boaters with the understanding that people join the organization for the education, but stay for the friends. Nothing captures this feeling better than the words of the members themselves. Here’s what a few have to say: “My husband, Matt, spent a lot of time in squadron classes and doing homework; I thought he was just hanging out with his buddies. While vacationing in the Florida Keys, we chartered a boat to go cruising and snorkeling, but I was a little scared. How do we know how to get to the reef? How do we get back? How deep is this water? How do we know where we are? My husband answered all of my questions, and I felt safe and comfortable knowing that he knew what he was doing. I still think he enjoys hanging out with his class buddies, but I’m glad he took the courses and I can’t wait until our next boating adventure!” – Debbie Murphy

“My boys, ages 11 and 12 at the time, and my wife became enamored with boating after a vacation at New Hampshire’s Lake Winnipesaukee in 1964, and we ended up buying an 18-foot lapstrake wooden boat with a 95-horsepower motor. I signed up to take courses from New Jersey’s Saddle River Power Squadron. I knew nothing about boating, and I had heard that United States Power Squadrons – America’s Boating Club was the way to learn. Over the years, the squadron and the boat became a way of life. Thank you for 37 great boating years.” – Arnold Bucksbaum “As a child of two long-time members, I regularly participated in boating safety instruction as well as rescues and other safety-related activities during the boating season. I first learned to read and write by keeping the log while cruising the Chesapeake Bay with my family. I learned to tie knots, make the vessel fast to the pier, and even lower and raise the anchor while still a preteen. I have been active in United States Power Squadrons – America’s Boating Club since I became a squadron apprentice at 13. I taught my first class, Marine Electronics, at 14. Through the years, I’ve taught the Boating course, Piloting, Advanced Piloting, Weather, Engine Maintenance, Marine Electronics and Coastal Navigation.” – Dwight Bues “My wife and I lived on our 42-foot Tayana Cutter for four years, sailing over 20,000 miles. We give our squadron all the credit for giving us all the tools to live our dream.” — Charles and Marianne Schuler See what everyone is talking about, visit www.americasboatingclub.org to find your local squadron and make experiences to last a lifetime.

he Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission called it the “grandaddy of all catfish” on its Facebook page. It’s an apt description for a blue cat that outweighs the existing Florida state record by more than 50 pounds. Running his trotlines on the Panhandle’s Choctawhatchee River in April, Joel Singletary must have known he was in for a workout when he pulled up on the 120-pound behemoth. According to the post, the adrenaline rush that comes with hooking such a huge fish was responsible for Singletary’s ability to haul the big blue into the boat. Because it was caught on a trotline and not on a rod and reel, the fish does not qualify for an official state record to replace the standing 69.5-pounder caught by William Stewart on May 30, 2015. That fish also came from the Choctawhatchee, which speaks to the fishery’s ability to pump out enormous catfish. The IGFA all-tackle world record blue catfish weighed 143 pounds. It was caught by Richard Nicholas Anderson in June of 2011 from Buggs Island (Kerr) Lake, Virginia.

Gulf States Announce Red Snapper Seasons By CAM Staff

Photo courtesy of Larry McGuire/Show Me The Fish Charters

W

ith federal approval of Exempted Fishing Permits (EFPs) for red snapper in the Gulf of Mexico, the five Gulf states will manage red snapper seasons in state and federal waters for the 2018-2019 seasons. The bag-limit in federal waters remains 2 fish per person per day, with a 16-inch minimum length. Every state except Texas has the same limit for its state waters. Federally permitted for-hire vessels have their own June 1-July 22 season. State permitted for-hire vessels will generally follow the state seasons, but they will only be allowed to harvest red snapper from state waters. Here’s a quick look at what each state has come up with to manage Gulf red snapper fisheries for 2018. FLORIDA The sunshine state has announced a 40-day recreational red snapper season in state and federal waters of the Gulf of Mexico to run June 11-July 20. This season is for private recreational vessels. For-hire operations without a federal reef fish permit must have a State Gulf Reef Fish Charter on their license, which can be obtained from a tax collectors office free of charge. All Gulf reef fish anglers are required to sign up for the Gulf Reef Fish Survey. Sign up at the Gulf Reef Fish Survey page at myfwc.com. ALABAMA The recreational season in Alabama for private recreational vessels is slated for 47 days in state and federal waters. Red snapper harvest will be open every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from June 1-Sept. 2, plus July 2-5 and Sept. 3. Alabama’s season length could change based on when the 985,000-pound recreational quota is met. The catch will be closely tracked through the state’s mandatory Snapper Check App. LOUISIANA In Louisiana, the recreational red snapper season for private recreational vessels opened May 25 in state and federal waters. The season will remain open until the recreational quota of 743,000 pounds is met, according to estimates from the LA Creel program. The state might consider amending the season to weekends only if necessary. A free Recreational Offshore Landing Permit is required for all offshore anglers. It is available through www.wlf.louisiana.gov/rolp. All anglers will be subject to LA Creel dockside surveys and associated online and phone surveys. These surveys are voluntary, but participation is strongly urged. MISSISSIPPI Recreational red snapper season opened May 25 in state and federal waters off Mississippi. The season is projected to run through Sept. 3, Labor Day, with a possible season closure from July 9-22. The reason for the potential closure is to remain within Mississippi’s 137,949-pound quota, which will be divided between the recreational and for-hire sectors. The recreational quota is 135,149 pounds. The state for-hire quota is 2,800 pounds. Recreational catches will be monitored through the mandatory Tails N’ Scales reporting program, accessible through the app, as well online at tailsnscales.org or through the call center at 1-844677-6277. TEXAS Texas recently projected an 82-day recreational red snapper season in federal waters starting June 1. Harvest of red snapper in state waters is expected to remain open year-round. Texas has its own 4 fish per day, 15-inch minimum bag limit for state waters. Once Texas’ allotted poundage is reached, the season will be closed. Download the iSnapper app to report red snapper landings. COASTALANGLERMAG.COM • THEANGLERMAG.COM

FLY FISHING

S

altwater fly fishing can take you to places off the beaten path. Whether you’re inclined to travel far or stick closer to home, traveling with a fly rod packed in your luggage can be a great adventure. Here are some of my favorites. Keys Tarpon I love the Florida Keys! There are few things that get me more stoked than the thought of sight fishing a fly to a cruising tarpon in shallow water over a white sand flat! The fishing areas in the Keys are endless. If I were to pick one spot that gives the angler the best opportunity to hook a tarpon of a lifetime on the fly, it would be Bahia Honda. From April through June, you have shots at tarpon of all sizes, fishing over white sand flats just a few hundred feet off the shore. If you’re lucky enough and your timing is right, you might experience the legendary palolo worm hatch. There is nothing more exhilarating in saltwater fly fishing than having the opportunity to target tarpon during this annual springtime event in the Keys. The sight of very large tarpon lazily slurping these tiny red worms off the surface will give any angler buck fever! Texas Coast (South Padre Island) If you’re looking for a great fly-fishing/camping adventure, then South Padre Island on the Texas Gulf coast is about as good as it gets! The dune-lined beach runs more than 30 miles east of the coastal town of South Padre. You’ll find great camping among the sand dunes and excellent fly fishing for redfish, jacks and sharks. Also, if the wind lays down and you get a day of glassy water conditions, there is a good chance of hooking a few rolling tarpon from the beach!

Baja’s East Cape is a far-out adventure where West Coast saltwater fly fishing got its start more than 50 years ago. Baja is rugged and wild, where the blazing hot, cactus-filled desert meets the deep blue waters of the Sea of Cortez. Los Cabos is your starting point. Drive north along the beaches to Los Barrilles, also known as the East Cape, and you find some the best roosterfish fly fishing in the world. This area is a sight fisherman’s dream, where roosterfish run along the beach in ultra-shallow clear water, looking for sardines and mullet to eat. The best approach for the fly angler is to stake out in a bait-filled area and wait for the roosters to swim within casting range. Be aware! Roosterfish are one of the toughest game fish to catch on the fly, but once you entice the pes gallo to take the fly you’ll return year after year to pursue these great and unique gamefish. So, get out and go! Venture off the beaten path and explore waters close to home or far way. But make sure you pack your fly rod!

dawn. The weather was unusually cold and foggy for a late August morning. The thermometer showed zero degrees Fahrenheit. Long-range forecasts predicted pleasant temperatures, but Vicki and I were glad to have prepared for the worst clothing-wise. The cold front suppressed the bite, but with help from Gino’s friend, Bruce Iwasa, we managed to land enough brookies for a shore lunch on one of the lake’s breathtaking islands. The setting was perfect on this uninhabited wilderness island. We sat on tree stumps, drank wine and watched as salad, trout, potatoes and dessert were prepared around a campfire. The fish were caught on light tackle using Muddler Minnow flies tied on jig heads. The unspoiled, wilderness scenery was more than we expected. We returned that night to Thunder Bay to enjoy filet mignon, red wine and a good night’s rest, so to be ready for another early morning departure, this time on the Nipigon River tailwater in search of Chinook salmon. The temperature was only 3 degrees warmer at 7 a.m. when we launched just below Alexander’s Dam on the Nipigon tailwater. Chinook are a species of Pacific salmon. Obviously they are not native to the drainage. They were introduced as a sport fish decades ago and have become one of the river’s most popular species. A thick early morning fog initially restricted us to trolling a small area with Rapala Countdown 11 lures on St. Croix Legend Tournament rods with small Shimano reels loaded with Stren MagnaThin 6-pound line. Two hours later, we were able to navigate downstream, where we tried our hand at fly fishing. Vicki hooked a nice brookie on spinning gear, while Gino and I struck out with fly rods. Around midday, the temperature had warmed and Gino suggested we go back up river to try trolling Rapalas at the dam. It worked! Vicki and I hooked and landed a 12-pound and 5-pound salmon, respectively. They were a blast to battle on light line. Having ended the day on a very high note, we headed back to Gino and Jennifer’s luxury cabin that has a view of Lake Superior to die for. The evening was enjoyed eating scratch-made pizzas cooked in a wood-fired oven and meeting family members. The day-3 plan to fish Superior was scrapped because of rain and high winds. We enjoyed the balance of our trip eating gourmet foods such as salt-crusted salmon, Italian pastas, homemade sausages, salads, desserts and lots of beverages with new Canadian fishing friends. The scenery around Thunder Bay is enough to make it a worthwhile trip. The potential for world-class freshwater fishing on an unbelievable amount of diversified waters around the town is limitless. ne of the benefits of being a charter captain in southwest Florida is the people you meet. Almost always, my first mate Vicki and I have fishing in common with the folks we take out on the water; sometimes the connection runs deeper. That’s how we became friends with Gino Mascarin and Jennifer Wintermans, of Thunder Bay, Canada. Like Vicki and I, both are avid anglers, and over the years we discovered we have many other things in common, including travel, fine foods and fine wines. On their last visit, Gino and Jennifer insisted we travel to their neck of the woods to fish for world record brook trout on Lake Nipigon and Chinook salmon on the Nipigon River. I had never fished Canada, so I decided to give it a try, especially since our hosts are people who know how to catch fish and also appreciate some of the other fine things life has to offer. We departed for Thunder Bay, by way of Toronto, in late August for four days of pampering, which was to include three days of fishing, gourmet cooking and wine tasting. Thunder Bay is a town that sits on the banks of Lake Superior just across the border from Minnesota on the Canadian side of the lake. It is in a relatively sparsely populated western corner of the Ontario province, where a web of lakes and waterways offers an unbelievable amount of good fishing. Over three days, we were to fish for different species at three different venues: brook trout on Lake Nipigon, Chinook salmon on the Nipigon River tailwater and walleye on Lake Superior. Lake Nipigon is renowned for producing large brook trout, including the world-record 14.5-pounder caught by Dr. JW Cook in 1915. Although it is dwarfed by nearby Lake Superior, Nipigon is a pretty big lake at 1,872 square miles of surface area. It feeds the Nipigon River, which is Lake Superior’s largest tributary. Over the months preceding the trip, Gino and Jennifer had shared photos of their catches, and our excitement was running high. We launched Gino’s 19-foot Lund Pro V Tournament Series before

GET A GRIP

O

ne of the most dangerous risks to divers is being struck by boat propellers while at the surface. I have personally experienced more close calls with boats than any other hazard, and I’ve witnessed the results of some horrific accidents. There are dive flag laws in place to protect divers. However, accidents occur more from lack of awareness, not due to anyone breaking laws on purpose. In any case, it’s worth reminding both boaters and divers of the rules. The laws are similar from state to state with a few variations. As an example, Florida law requires divers and snorkelers to display a “diver down” flag when in the water to caution nearby boaters. The flag is a red square with a diagonal white stripe with a wire stiffener to keep the flag extended and visible. If on a dive boat, one must ensure that

the flag is visible from the boat’s highest point from all directions, and it must measure at least 20 by 24 inches. It must also be removed when divers are not in the water. If the dive excursion is from shore and not using a boat, a flag must be towed by the diver, and the flag must measure at least 12 by 12 inches. Boaters must stay at least 300 feet away from dive flags in open waters and 100 feet away in rivers, inlets and navigation channels. Boaters who must approach a diver-down flag must slow to the minimum speed. Likewise, divers must take care to stay within the same distances to the flag.

Tips for Divers:

1. Avoid diving in high boat traffic areas. 2. The more visible you are, the better, so consider displaying a larger flag than mandated by law. 3. Consider wearing a brightly colored hoodie and/ or towing something that will make you more visible. 4. Consider carrying a backup marker, such as an extra reel and float, in case you get separated from your flag. Abort the dive if you do get separated, and deploy the backup immediately. 5. Listen for boat traffic before ascending. This won’t apply to sailboats, so always make a quick 360-degree scan as you come up. 6. As a last resort, dive down for safety.

The Fish Grip is a fish landing device that was developed by avid anglers. The goal was to find a safer way to land a fish — safer for the fish AND the angler.

The Fish Grip will help you land fish!

Tips for Boaters:

1. Refrain from using autopilot in an area where diving takes place. 2. If traversing areas with dive sites, stay extra alert, watch for dive flags and maintain a safe distance. 3. Even if there are no dive flags, look for divers the same way you look for other hazards, as there can be instances of divers getting separated from

their flags. 4. Monitor channel 18 (or whatever is used locally) for dive advisories or to communicate with dive boats. If you make these tips a part of your float plan, you will minimize the potential for accidents. We all cherish our time on the ocean and want to come home with happy memories! TIPS FROM A PRO

WHY ELECTRONICS ARE SO IMPORTANT BRANDON LESTER

E

lectronics are a very important tool in locating and catching bass, just remember to use them to look for everything underwater, not just big schools of fish. When I launch on a new lake my GPS mapping is everything.

I’ll just run full screen S i d eV i s i o n . The newest revolution from Raymarine is the RealVision 3D. It paints a 3D image of what’s under the boat and is amazing for providing an underwater

I run Navionics Platinum in my Raymarine Axiom Pro units and it works great. Your map card should show great detail and well-defined contour lines. This helps you find new spots when you get on a pattern by simply looking at your map for similar places. Tracks are important, also. I run tracks all the time on my map so I can tell where I’ve been and where I haven’t. I change the color of the tracks each day when fishing multiple-day tournaments to keep track of when I was there, as well. I run three 12-inch Axiom Pros, two units at the console and one at the bow. The reason for two units at the console is so I can have one unit strictly for mapping. I like a full 12inch screen so I can easily see contour changes and such. So many times I’ve been running down the lake and seen a place that looked good on the map and pulled over and caught fish. The second unit at the console is mostly used for SideVision, DownVision and RealVision 3D. I run a split screen most of the time, but if conditions call for it, I run full screen SideVision and/or CHIRP sonar depending on bottom composition. For instance, if I’m scanning a huge flat looking for isolated cover like stumps or brushpiles,

perspective. Keep in mind any time you’re scanning to pay attention to everything you see. We all want to find that mother lode of fish, but more times than not that’s not how you find great fishing spots. Keep your eyes peeled for baitfish, grass, brushpiles, rock piles, roadbeds and anything unusual. The best places are not always obvious. My settings for my bow unit are pretty simple. I run a split-screen 90 percent of the time, with mapping on one side and CHIRP sonar on the other. Mapping is important for following contours and lining up on waypoints. CHIRP shows everything that’s going on under my boat. I find myself constantly looking at this unit because it tells so much about how fish are acting. If I see a lot of fish suspended up high, I might try a jerkbait instead of a jig, or vise-versa. I recommend the Axiom Pro because they’re easy to use, super-fast and have a touchscreen as well as a keypad with a scroll knob, which is nice for zooming in and out on the map while running.

any anglers think of fall as “striper season,” but there are instances throughout the spring and summer when your odds of catching a truly big cow are actually better. “That’s exactly the case with the striper fishery out of Barnegat Inlet, New Jersey,” said Capt. Dave DeGennaro of the Waretown charter vessel Hi Flier (www.hiflier.com). “We have a 13-mile stretch of ocean between the inlet and Lavallette that gives up a ton of 30- to 50-pound bass this time of year. It’s reliable trophy action and a lot different than you might imagine.” Indeed, it is. Stripers here generally set up in 50- to 65-foot depths paralleling Long Beach Island State Park. Rather than stalk baitfish schools, the big fish spread out. In response, sharp skippers troll to cover more water. “The bottom here is mundane; no real structure, no drop-offs,” said DeGennaro. “It lacks character in terms of bass cover so we use bunker spoons to target these cows. Every ten minutes, we’ll mark a big fish on our electronics, but that single scratch often translates into a vicious strike. ” No one seems sure why the linesiders favor this bland stretch, but no one is complaining, either. Captains that can troll big spoons effectively rarely get shut out and most work up two to five trophy fish per half-day trip. Some days, the action is considerably better. “I put out a pair of Tony Maja E-Z Out-Rodders and 8-foot rods with soft tips,” explained DeGennaro, who pursues these fish aboard a World Cat 25CC catamaran with twin 150 Suzuki Four Stroke engines. “With the rods at a 90-degree angle to the water, there’s not much upward pressure on the spoons, so they’ll run deep without a drail. My favorite offering is #4 Tony Maja (www.tonymajaproducts.com) in white or chartreuse split (half chartreuse, half green). It has a great slow-roll action stripers can’t resist. It comes with an 8-ounce keel weight you can swap out for 12 ounces to help keep the spoon riding down near the bottom.” DeGennaro uses 80-pound-test, high-visibility Dacron for backing, 300 feet of 40-pound Monel wire, and 30 feet of 60-pound test High Seas Quattro monofilament. He attaches the spoon with a Rosco #56, 150-pound Duo-Lock Snap. Don’t use a snap swivel, he cautions, it hurts the spoon’s action. Catches during this big bass bonanza are best on moving water, so concentrate your efforts when the current pushes hardest. Trolling speed varies between 2.5 knots and 3.5 knots. Your spoons are working right when the rod tips are pumping hardest. “These are big, beautiful fish,” said DeGennaro, “but keep in mind they are breeders. It’s okay to toss some of the big girls back.” Barnegat Inlet is easily accessible via Barnegat Bay, from Beach Haven from the south or Manasquan to the north. Holiday Harbor Marina (www.holidayharbormarinanj.com) and Long Key Marina (www.longkeymarina.com) in Waretown are full service operations that accommodate transients. For lodging, check out the Holiday Inn in Manahawkin, N.J.
