Access weather and fishing data via satellite up to 200 miles from the contiguous U.S. shoreline.
SiriusXM Marine Weather overlays directly on your chartplotter while fishing coastal or offshore waters and provides two vital services for anglers. First, and most importantly, it helps you detect, monitor and avoid bad weather without needing a cell signal. Storms can build quickly at sea, and the numerous, selectable overlay options within the SiriusXM menu lets you tailor the display to your desired level to make sure you and your crew stay safe. In addition to safety, the marine weather overlay can also help you catch more fish. Graphic displays of sea surface temperature contours and wind directions and speeds help you locate tide and current edges, and see where bait fish might be stacked up, giving you a definitive edge when trying to find the bite. With key information needed to find the locations in which fish are most likely to appear, anglers can save time and fuel while fishing.
H E R E I S W H AT T H E P R O S S AY A B O U T S I R I U S X M M A R I N E ’ S S E R V I C E S Rain during a day of offshore fishing is uncomfortable, frustrating and can ruin a trip. We continuously use our SiriusXM Marine Weather to monitor the weather pattern the night before a trip, the morning of, and throughout the day. We’ve been able to track the direction of a storm prior to leaving port and while fishing offshore. The comfort of knowing we can stay ahead of, or just behind, a fast moving storm gives us great peace of mind!
Without question, one of Team Canyon Runner’s most valuable tools is the implementation of SiriusXM’s sea surface temperature overlays on our plotters. For example, we can manipulate the SST data with a range from, say, 68 to 85 degrees. That allows the chart to recalibrate the new 68-degree water temp as blue in color and the 82-degree water temp as red. Seeing a hard, defining break is irreplaceable. It has steered our boats to the fish countless times.
Yesterday was perfect example of why I use SiriusXM satellite weather. I was charter fishing 30 miles NW of Key West knowing a front was coming. Having checked the wind barbs in the front I could see they were 200 miles away moving NW at 30mph. I was able to finish my charter and beat the front home safely and still get a full day of fishing in. Well worth the price of the SiriusXM service.

Product Review COBRA MARINE JUMPACK XL H2O The JumPack XL H2O is Cobra’s most versatile and powerful portable power source and jump starter yet. It enables you to jumpstart your car, truck, RV or marine engine and charge your mobile devices in all weather conditions. It is designed to jump start marine outboards, large V8 gasoline and diesel engines direct-from-the-battery or from the 12V port, and it is compliant with the latest safety UL standard. Most jump starters only work with cables connected to the battery. The JumPack can also jump a battery via the 12V port inside the vehicle, which means the user can stay safely inside the vehicle while the battery charges. The rugged and waterproof design makes it the perfect portable power device for any adventure. This compact unit is lightweight and powerful, with a lithium-cobalt battery that holds a charge longer and is smaller than traditional jump starters. An easy to view tri-color LED indicates the status of the JumPack and when it’s safe to start the vehicle. It runs its own self diagnostics to make sure the cables are attached properly, and if not, the JumPack will not allow itself to be used. This protects the user and the vehicle. Dual 3 Amp USB ports allow for rapid charging of two portable devices simultaneously, and it has a built-in super-bright LED flashlight, strobe and SOS LED. The unit includes jumper cables with clamps, a 12-volt charger cable, AC charge adapter and a neoprene carrying case.
Paired with video-enabled sonar units like Raymarine’s new Axoim Pro or eSeries, an Aqua-Vu underwater camera becomes the ultimate fishfinding machine. Whether it’s under ice or on open water, watching the fish and your lure in real-time takes the excitement of sight fishing to another level. It also gives obvious advantages to the angler. With Aqua-Vu, you’ll know exactly what fish is down there and be able to adjust the presentation to home in on what action triggers the fish to bite. But that’s just the beginning. All anglers know how important water temperature is to finding feeding fish. Probes equipped on the camera reveal water temperature at the depth you’re fishing, which can be markedly different from the temperature at the surface. With that information, it is easier than ever to find the conditions you’re looking for. Aqua-Vu can be plugged directly into a Raymarine sonar unit and viewed on the screen. This sonar, GPS and video combination is a powerful tool to make you a better angler, and they can all be viewed at the same time. Identify structure with sonar, drop a camera down to see exactly what it is and what species are holding on it, and then mark it on the GPS. It can all be achieved on the same unit.

In February, Raymarine partnered with FLIR to bring to market its most advanced marine radar system. Quantum 2, with Doppler target identification, is designed for integration with Raymarine’s awardwinning Axiom multifunction displays to enhance boaters’ situational awareness by intelligently identifying moving and static targets at both long and short ranges. Quantum 2 is tuned to detect moving versus stationary targets. It color codes moving targets to indicate whether they are getting closer (red) or moving away (green). In addition, Quantum 2 brings a new Safety Sector feature that highlights and color codes potentially dangerous static targets within 200 meters in front of the vessel. Advanced users will appreciate Quantum 2’s 25-target mini-automatic radar plotting aid (MARPA). Developed for the United States Coast Guard, Quantum 2’s MARPA feature is doppler-assisted, meaning inbound contacts can be acquired automatically by the radar display to ease navigation in congested waters. Quantum 2 also features CHIRP Pulse Compression technology, which uses compressed radar pulses to display targets like boats, landmarks, rocks and weather cells with unsurpassed resolution and separation. Quantum 2’s flexible design allows for Wi-Fi networking to Raymarine multifunction displays (MFDs) or via traditional wired configuration, making installation much easier and eliminating the need for additional radar cabling or interface boxes.
ACR Electronics is making life easier and safer for boat owners with pre-packed premium boating Survival Kits. Affordably priced and ideal for any boater, the kits include essential products needed to quickly abandon ship and alert the Coast Guard. Boaters carrying one of the bags on-board will be equipped with an ACR Emergency Position-Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) or Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) operating on the 406 MHz frequency. The beacons can be quickly and easily activated in an emergency to enable responders to identify and locate a boater in distress. The kits also contain a variety of other products including an abandon ship bag, strobe lights, signal mirror and a whistle to further help rescuers. ACR Survival Kits give you peace of mind knowing the safety of your family and crew is ensured beyond the minimum U.S. Coast Guard requirements. When time is short and there is no help in sight, boaters can grab the bag and depend on the kit for a swift rescue.
If you need compact, powerful GPS tracking, AtlasTrax MiniTrax is the system for you. The MiniTrax compact GPS satellite tracking system is only 3” x 2”. It comes battery powered, but can also be hardwired or used with a 12 volt charger. MiniTrax qualifies as a required GPS tracker for insurance companies and provides great mapping features. Alert messages are sent by email or text to notify the user of movement. A messagehandling server gives access to all trips and loved ones can check the exact boat location with the click of a mouse. With several satellite message plans available, you can also see data such as mileage, time length of trips, latitudes and longitudes, headings and speeds. MiniTrax is fully waterproof, has daily battery reports and is ideal for boats, aviation, jet skis, ATVs, RV’s, golf carts, construction and transportation equipment. The new Altasalarm audible/visual system with a 60-foot cable wrap, door hatch and canvas sensor can notify you with a loud siren if someone activates a sensor in the event of attempt theft.

Product Review FURUNO INTRODUCES NEW DUAL TOUCH-SCREEN BLACK BOX OFFERING Furuno set a new standard for touch-screen technology when they introduced NavNet TZtouch2, the first multi-function display (MFD) to utilize edge-swipe technology. In February, they raised the bar on innovative navigation solutions with the introduction of a Black Box NavNet TZtouch2 system, the TZT2BB. This next step in the NavNet series takes the feature set of the award-winning TZtouch2 and packs it into a brand-new black box configuration with dual-display capability. The TZT2BB packs enough processing power to drive two separate touch-screen displays, delivering twice the navigation potential from a single, compact black box unit, for the most technologically advanced all-glass bridge available. TZT2BB can drive two independent monitors such as Furuno’s 17”, 19” or 24” Multi Touch Displays, which allows you to seamlessly move from one screen to the other. It has the capability to handle different monitor resolutions and aspect ratios, which is convenient if you want to utilize existing monitors of different sizes. It also supports full HD video input in HDMI format, for surveillance cameras, sonar or entertainment systems. The TZT2BB operates with the same intuitive Multi Touch interface as the current TZtouch2 MFDs. You can add an optional external keyboard. Customers looking to upgrade from a NavNet 3D Black Box system will be happy to learn that the external TZT2BB keyboard is the same size as their existing keyboard, making it an easy swap, with no cutting. A retrofit kit will be available as an option to convert NavNet 3D’s MFDBB keyboard for use with the new TZT2BB. Similar to the 12.1” and 15.6” NavNet TZtouch2 models, the TZT2BB leverages Furuno’s award-winning network products, including a variety of NXT
and X-Class radars, fishfinders, multi-beam sonar, instruments and other sensors. Radars are available ranging from a compact, 4kW Solid-State Doppler Dome to a super powerful 25kW Open Array. For fishfinders, the TZT2BB includes a built-in dual-frequency Furuno Fish Finder with RezBoost, which creates images 4 to 8 times sharper than a conventional fishfinder. In addition to the built-in Fish Finder, Furuno has impressive add-on options that include the DFF3D Multi-Beam Sonar and DFF1-UHD TruEcho CHIRP Fish Finder. You can both the internal fish finder and the DFF3D Multi-Beam Sonar simultaneously. The unit comes preloaded with raster, vector and fishing charts for the Western Hemisphere in MapMedia’s MM3D format. The U.S. NOAA raster and vector charts are free, while the preloaded Navionics and C-Map charts are available for purchase. Furuno also provides free satellite photography for the U.S. that can be downloaded from their website. As with the TZTL12F and TZTL15F models, tablets and smartphones can be accessed via built-in WiFi, with several free apps available on both Apple and Android platforms, allowing you to remotely view and control your navigation network. Furuno continues to break new ground with their latest Black Box, the TZT2BB. The TZT2BB is perfect for larger helms to display all navigation, radar, fishfinder and instrument sensors across dual displays. For more information on the NavNet TZT2BB, contact Furuno at (360) 8349300 or visit them online at www.FurunoUSA.com.

he gripe came from up on the poling platform, “You won’t see any fish when you’re sitting in the boat blasting Garth Brooks.” Maybe tarpon on this particular stretch of the Florida coast don’t like country music. Or maybe it had something to do with the sound system, which was garbage. Over the wind and waves, the noise rattling from the speakers was barely discernible as music, so we turned it off… and didn’t spot the first fish through an 8-hour day on the water. It’s during slow trips like these when good tunes are most important. The songs become the soundtracks to our adventures. That’s why you owe it to your fishing buddies to have a good sound system on the boat. When it comes to sound quality, there isn’t a company out there better than Miramar, Florida’s JL Audio. Since the mid1970s, when co-founders Lucio Proni and Jim Birch built speakers during summer break from college, the company has grown into one of the most respected audio brands in the world. JL Audio stepped into the marine market in 2005, and in 2016 they introduced the MediaMaster 100 (MM100), which quickly became the high-end source unit of choice for boaters who really care about sound quality. The source unit is where it all starts. It’s the head unit that receives input from your music-playing device and channels it through the amplifiers to the speakers. The source unit is also the dashboard where you control it all. Off the bat, it was apparent JL Audio had designed an exceptional unit, built to stand up to the rigors of sun and salt with all the features expected of a modern sound system. Already known for producing marine amplifiers, speakers and subwoofers of superb quality, JL Audio now had the final piece for a full marine sound system. It was an important step for a brand that values audio quality above all else. “There is nothing else in the marine market like it,” said Alan Wenzel, JL Audio’s VP of business development and strategic planning. “Others may have operating systems with more bells and whistles, but their sound doesn’t come close to ours.” Boaters appreciated the sweet, crisp sound pumping at 4 volts through the RCA jacks. The signal is noticeably clearer than the industry-standard 2-volt output. And the unit’s excellent control flexibility allows for a wide range of zone configurations, which is critical to overcoming the ambient noise of the marine environment. Modern source units are expected to provide connectivity with a host of different devices, and MM100 does this with Bluetooth and USB as well as an analog auxiliary input, so you can even plug in a tape deck and play your old Grateful Dead bootlegs if you want to. The

unit is SiriusXM ready and includes a built-in AM/FM/Weatherband tuner. It is also NMEA 2000 certified, which means it will communicate with compatible multi-function displays from brands like Simrad, Lowrance, Garmin and more. The physical design of the MM100 is what you would expect from a top-of-the-line piece of marine equipment. It looks cool, and it’s intuitive, with a bright, full-color LCD screen and large, backlit controls that are easy to use while in motion. There’s even the option to add remote controls. What JL Audio launched in 2016 remains the best sounding source unit available. A long list of high-quality boat builders jumped on board to install JL Audio systems standard. “The premier brands are the ones we wanted to partner with,” said Wenzel, “especially the ones that are really conscious of the quality of their product.” The MM100 is a high-end unit designed to drive high-end systems for the kind of control, sound and power demanded by audiophiles. And the price point reflects that. Soon after the release of the MM100, Wenzel said customers began asking for a source unit with built-in power and a more mainstream price point. Not everyone needs to hear the triangle ping in Vivaldi’s Four Seasons across the deck of a sport fishing yacht. In response, JL Audio engineers developed the Media Master 50, which becomes available on the retail market this month. By trimming a few of the bells and whistles off the MM100, JL Audio engineers developed a source unit that has all of the sound quality of its top-of-theline unit, but on a smaller scale, perfect for boats that can get by on two sound zones instead of four. With built-in amplifiers capable of producing 100 watts of high-fidelity output, the MM50 is also NMEA certified and compatible with most everything the MM100 is. And like all JL Audio products, accurate sound reproduction was the No. 1 focus in its design. Wenzel said JL Audio would never release anything that doesn’t meet their stringent criteria for sound quality and durability in the marine environment. This attention to quality is what built the JL Audio brand. “Because we are a true audio company, we know a lot about audio reproduction,” he said. “We do everything we can to exceed the standards. We do thousands of hours of listening testing as well as environmental testing before anything is manufactured.” While most audio companies farm out their designs, JL Audio has dozens of electrical and audio engineers on staff. Their marine speakers, assembled at their Miramar headquarters undergo 2,000 hours of salt and UV testing in onsite environmental chambers, which is four times the industry standard of 500 hours. JL Audio caters to boaters who value sound quality in an onboard sound system. With the MM100 and the MM50, the company now offers the source unit to run the highest quality JL Audio sound systems for any size boat or budget. For more information, visit www.jlaudio.com.

L.L.BEAN CAMPSITE ORGANIZER No meal tastes better than one cooked out in the open around a campfire. However, around the campfire definitely isn’t the easiest place to prepare a meal. When you’re tired of using tree stumps to cook on and plastic bins to store all your gear, it’s time to look into the L.L.Bean Campsite Organizer. This portable outdoor organizer features three interior shelves for storing camp kitchen utensils, picnic gear and grilling tools. It’ll keep your gear in order, and the aluminum top doubles as extremely handy counter space. Open, this 31.5”x25”x20” pantry keeps your food and gear organized and out of the way. Folded down to just 25”x20”x4”, it’s easy to pack for the road. The Campsite Organizer is built of aluminum and 600D polyester fabric with heavy-duty hinges, so it’s tough and lightweight. It comes with its own carrying sack, making it extremely portable. Anyone who has ever spent a few nights in the outdoors knows the joys of a well-organized campsite as well as how quickly a campsite can become a jumbled mess. The Campsite Organizer goes a long way toward creating happy campers.
STORMPROOF SWEETFIRE A blazing fire is integral to the camping experience, and in emergency situations the light and heat of a good fire can save your life. The problem is, emergency situations that require a fire usually come with the same conditions that make lighting a fire difficult. With UCO’s new Stormproof Sweetfire, you’ll never be caught without a fire again—regardless of weather conditions. Stormproof Sweetfire is an entirely new take on tinder. UCO took its eco-friendly Sweetfire Strikeable Fire Starter, which is made from a renewable sugarcane waste product called bagasse, and added a proprietary Stormproof tip to create a product that’s totally reliable, whatever the weather. Stormproof Sweetfire’s unique point shapes come connected and ready to break off, and each has an integrated windproof and waterproof match head. An individual point will burn up to seven minutes, which is enough to get a fire started in any conditions. Whether you’re building a campfire to sit around in the evening or if it’s a fire to stave off hypothermia, you’ll be glad to have Stormproof Sweetfire when it’s wet outside.

POPTICALS POP-OUT SUNGLASSES
Good sunglasses are a necessity whenever you’re spending time outside. On the boat or streamside at a campsite, the gritty dampness of the outdoors combined with poor packing and storage options can wreak havoc on expensive, high-quality lenses. Popticals takes packing and storage issues out of the equation with premium quality and stylish shades that fold down to a compact size to fit into a protective case that is small enough to be slipped in a pocket or clipped to just about anything with an attached carabiner. They are the perfect sunglasses for camping because you’ll never have to worry about them being damaged when they’re not on your face. And when packing space is at a premium, Popticals’ small profile and light weight means they’ll be out of the way yet easily accessible. Featuring NYDEF nylon lenses manufactured for Popticals by Carl Zeiss Vision, Popticals are high-perfomance polarized sunglasses. Nylon offers the same clarity of glass but weighs much less, which makes them more comfortable. Backpackers, who are always looking for ways to shave weight, will appreciate how light they are.

s you read this, large schools of tarpon are making their way to the pristine waters of Franklin County, Fla. They’re hungry, and once here, they’ll be taking full advantage of the pogies, mullet and crabs that these waters are so rich with. For anyone considering a place for the adventure of a lifetime, look no further. This is a place where the entire family can get a wide variety of fishing experiences: from the technical tarpon on the fly, to the simple trout on a live shrimp and everything in between! Capt. Tommy Robinson of Robinson Brothers Guide Service in Apalachicola, Fla., has been guiding for more than 38 years. He and

his brother, Chris, are experts at taking anglers to fish of all types… especially tarpon. While they understand all the intricacies of how wind, tides and bait movement will determine the best plan for tarpon success, they can also guide you to drag-stripping jack crevalle, topwater red drum, sight-fishing for cobia and tripletail and so many other fishing adventures available along the Forgotten Coast. Tarpon are a technical fish; details matter for success and the window of opportunity can, at times, be small. The water conditions must be right, winds will dictate launch locations, and baitfish movements are always a player. They can be a challenge, but the rewards are big! To see and feel the raw, wild power of these giants is like nothing else. Options for getting them to bite include artificial lures on fly and spinning equipment or using live bait like pogies and crabs. Details for success are too long to list here, but the fact that these fish are here to eat means your chances of hooking one are great. If you haul your own boat down to the area, there are plenty of launch sites that put you right in the action. Access to places like Gulf of Mexico, St. George and Dog Islands, Apalachicola Bay and St. George Sound are quick and easy. First-timers to the area are encouraged to hire a seasoned guide, but this area offers so many options that almost anyone can load a livewell with shrimp or pogies and catch something. Whether it’s trout and reds in the bays or kings and amberjack in the Gulf, there’s something for everyone; tarpon being here just makes this destination as good as it gets. Contact Capt. Tommy Robinson at (850) 653-8896. For a complete list of rentals, charters, supplies and more visit www.floridasforgottencoast.com For more on fishing in Franklin County, go to

raises thousands of swirling midges into the air, it’s time to wrap up that lunch sandwich and pick up your rod. On a backcountry trip several years ago, two buddies and I were kicked back around the campfire long after dark and running our whiskey-lubricated mouths when Jeff let out a startled yelp. A big black stonefly, maybe 2 inches long, with bright orange trim had pelted him in the side of the face. Over the next hour or so, these giant leggy critters descended upon us to the point that we had to seek out the shelter of our tents, but not before we dug through our fly boxes by headlamp to secure a handful of reasonable imitations. Those big stoneflies were gone the next morning. We wouldn’t even have known they were there if we hadn’t been sitting up late around the fire. But guess what the trout were eating? They were eating big black stonefly nymphs, exclusively for all we could tell. We caught pretty wild rainbows and browns until our last nymph unraveled from overuse. After that the fun was over. We couldn’t get them to eat anything else. On another occasion in a different place, I remember squatting by the creek using sand to scrub the dinner dishes. The sun had set behind the ridge and it was beginning to get a little gray out when I noticed big white mayflies with dark wings on and over the water. They were coffin flies. I was witnessing something I had never seen before, a spinner fall of eastern green drakes. I left those dishes right there on a rock and caught fish until it was too dark to see brown trout dimpling the surface as they fed. I’ve only experienced a hatch like that on a Southeastern river one other time, and I would have missed it if I hadn’t been washing dishes in the creek. On second thought, “falling into the rhythm” is definitely too mushy to describe the situation. What’s really going on is opportunistic. By spending night and day by the river for several days, the odds are improved that you will be there when something really cool happens. For GPS coordinates to access points and detailed maps of all North Carolina’s and Georgia’s best trout water, check out “Flyfishers Guide to North Carolina & Georgia.” It is available at fly shops, on Amazon, and signed copies are available from the author by emailing nsc8957@ gmail.com.

amping to fish is fun. And when you’re trout fishing, spending the night allows access to portions of streams that would be difficult to fish or even completely inaccessible on a day trip. Sleeping, cooking and eating by the river also allows you get on the water earlier and fish later, which is often when the bite is best. But perhaps the most overlooked angling advantage to camping streamside is that you’re there. You’re either in the river fishing or you’re near the river relaxing or doing camp chores. It might sound hokey, but this allows you to fall into the rhythms of the woods and the water and all the life surrounding them. Lest this be mistaken for sentimental hippie drivel, here it is put another way: By spending time around the river, one is able to constantly observe their surroundings. That bug that just dropped into your morning coffee might be an orange caddis, which is a mighty good hint at what the trout might be keyed on. When cloud cover begins to dissipate and the sun

any Southeastern rivers have both spotted bass and the newly designated Alabama Bass (Micropterus punctulatus, Micropterus henshalli). Spotted and Alabama bass behave in similar ways and share the same preferred habitat, so for the purpose of this article I will refer to them both as just “spotted bass.” Spotted bass are some people’s favorite and other people’s least favorite bass. They were originally native to the Tennessee and Coosa River basins and have been widely introduced to other watersheds across the Southeast. They are very good at adapting to many of these environments, and hence, we find them in almost every watershed in the region. Spotted bass have changed fisheries dramatically, making big largemouth bass scarce on many reservoirs and competing with native species like Altamaha, Bartram’s and shoal bass. Now that they are here, we might as well learn how to catch them, and I have to admit I have come to enjoy fishing for them. Their aggressiveness makes them relatively easy to catch, and their abundance makes them the best choice if you want to take a few home for the fryer. Spotted bass love rivers and creeks. They can be found all over, but some of my favorite places to catch them are off of deep rock banks and woody blowdowns. I also look for what I’ve come to call “spot spots,” which is anywhere surface debris (like leaves) has collected. This is typically up against logs or in eddies. This surface debris creates a shady place for the spots to hide, and anywhere debris collects on the surface is a pocket of slower water to escape the current. Fishing from a kayak is a great way to access these kinds of areas. Occasionally, you will find them in faster current, especially Alabama bass, but usually native fish like shoal bass and smallmouth still rule the fast water. To catch spots, I throw any kind of jig including swim jigs, finesse jigs and structure jigs. Spots just love jigs. Jigs also don’t get hung up in the tight cover spots enjoy. Bounce them off of rocks, up and over logs, and drag them through the bottom of a big eddy. There’s a good chance a feisty spotted bass will be waiting. It’s always good to start small with a finesse jig, especially when fishing a new area. Spotted bass are typically smaller, so small jigs can be great numbers baits. Once you figure out that larger spots live in an area, size up to bigger jigs. Besides jigs, my other favorite baits for spots are spinnerbaits, bladed jigs and small poppers. I’ve heard many fishermen refer to spots as “dumb,” and I believe it’s true. They’re just easier to catch than other bass, and that makes them a ton of fun. In the heat of the summer, there is no better place to be than floating a creek or river catching feisty spots in the shade.

Making the Switch
Contributed by Capt. David Hulsey International Federation of Fly Fishers Master Certified Casting Instructor http://www.hulseyflyfishing.com 770-639-4001 Trying to fly fish for the first time can be a daunting task for the life-long spinning or bait caster. I love telling these folks that they already have half of the fly-fishing mystery solved. The trout are in the same locations in the stream whether you’re tossing bait or a dry fly. For goodness sakes, nymph fishing with a fly is very similar to letting a couple of kernels of corn tumble down the creek. It’s just a different way of doing it. Casting the fly usually gets this statement from the beginner “I’d spend all my time hung in the bushes”! To be sure, someone watching all that line flying around would assume that you’d be tangled in the trees all the time! Learning a couple of casts such as the water haul and the roll cast will go a long way to prevent this. It is not necessary to cast more than just a few feet on most of our Southeastern trout streams. The casting motion for the fly rod is somewhat different than that of your old trusty spinning rod. You may have to unlearn some things. With a fly rod, you cast the weight of the line, not the weight of the lure. That being said, bending the wrist dramatically is normally a no-no when flinging a fly. Too much wrist bend results in your fly
going in a circle, not toward your target. On a basic fly-cast, for best performance you have to pause during the cast just enough to let the fly line straighten behind you before going forward. This will usually result in a decent cast. The month of May is one of the best times to try out your new found interest in fly fishing. The water temperatures are favorable to the fish, and the insects are hatching enough to bring the trout to the surface. Dry fly fishing is arguably the easiest form of the sport. Get a handful of bushy, easy-to-see flies such as a Yellow Stimulator, Royal Wulff, Elk Hair Caddis, and an Adams dry fly. Get them all in size 12 or 14. Purchase a 7 1/2’ monofilament 4x or 5x leader, tie on one of those patterns and go fishing. Check out the delayed harvest streams in North Georgia and Western North Carolina, and you won’t be disappointed! Don’t get me wrong, there is a world of details in the sport that will make you more effective, but these simple clues will catch you a fish or two. Give us a call at 770-639-4001 to book a class or trophy trout guide trip at Noontootla Creek Farms. We can make learning to fly fish easy and fun! You can make the switch.

May Fly Fishing Report With the cold extended winter weather we have had this past spring it appears that May could be our best month for fly fishing the lakes around North Georgia. Thru nearly the 2nd week of April our surface water temps have not yet hit 60 degrees. That means everything is in a delayed mode. May gives anglers an opportunity to catch both striped bass and spotted bass on topwater flies and lures, and in big numbers! Stripers and spotted bass will literally be coming down off their spawn and eating with reckless abandon. There are multiple patterns that may exist in the month of May. First and foremost is the early morning and late day topwater bite. Now is the time to grab a nine or ten weight rod rigged with a floating line and one of Charlie Bisharat’s Pole Dancer flies or Flat Fred flies and have at it. A Pole Dancer is just that; a fly anglers Zara Spook. It walks the dog when
retrieved, and striped bass do not just eat it…THEY CRUSH IT! It is easily THE MOST VISCOUS STRIKE you will ever see from a striped bass. You can also toss other types of poppers, sliders, gurglers and Wiggle Minnows at these fish, but in my opinion, nothing works better than a Pole Dancer. If you want to simply catch lots of fish then this is the time to toss a Game Changer fly on an intermediate line on the lake’s tapered points. A Game Changer is one of the best flies ever as it mimics many types of baitfish, and when retrieved, looks like a living/ breathing shad or herring. After the sun comes up you can switch over to a sinking line and start tossing either Coyote flies or baitfish type patterns like a Cowen’s Baitfish or Puglisi type fly off the points. The key to this pattern is to keep moving. It’s all about fishing the points! The more points you fish, the more bites
you will attract. While low light (both early and late) is the preferred time to fish rather than the middle of the day, do not discount midday when it gets a tad windy. This is also the time of year where fishing a point off the main lake river channel can get a topwater eat from any fly that is slowly worked on the surface and makes a seductive V-like wake. Conventional fisherman can continue to toss Redfins on all the points. Fishing big 7” long Redfins can be very effective on windy days.
On sunny days use a chrome sided Redfin, and on cloudy days fish a matt colored Redfin. Fly anglers can use a large slider type fly on a floating line to mimic the action of a Cordell Redfin. A large weightless Bass Assassin can also be a good choice at this time of year. Finally, keep in mind that the dock light bite is in full swing. This is easy fishing as game fish seem to get really dumb when fished to on a dock light. While I prefer a sinking line when fishing these fish, it is also fun to toss a slow sinking intermediate so that you can actually watch for the bite when your fly passes over the light. May is a great time to be fishing the ponds of North GA. By the middle to the end of the month, carp will be getting targeted on the Chattahoochee River and others around the state! We will discuss that fishery a tad more in detail during next month’s report. See you on the pond.

Local Rivers & Fly Fishing CHATTOOGA RIVER
Fishing on the delayed harvest sections has been outstanding with large fish being caught with dry flies. The early spring hatches have been great. We have been fishing the riffles to the heads of the pools with the most success. Dry fly fishing the slower water areas when the hatch is happening has also produced great numbers of fish as well. In early morning and late afternoons, long swinging dead-drifts of flashback nymphs and emergers have been the key to success. As the hatches progress with the warmer weather, we look forward to seeing many more Mayflies and Caddis. Please stop by the fly shop and check out the “Hot List” for hatch updates. Another large emergence is of the oak worms. These fine little creatures are a tasty treat that even the largest of trout cannot pass up as they fall from the trees
into the rivers. Casting imitations of these into over-hanging bushes and dead drifting them with a twitching technique will be very beneficial to a large day on the river. When you find these worms dangling from their silk lines from the trees, do not hesitate to stop and watch the worm finally hit the water and see what happens! The next process is to work your way into a good vantage point to make your cast to the fish which just ate the natural. Do not worry about a delicate cast. Even splatting the worm on the water will be just as effective, as they also fall out of the trees from far above. As the late spring temperatures rise, fishing the shady areas of the rivers will be essential, as the fish will move out of the high sun and warmer temperature waters. Check out our daily posts on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter, giving you the daily water conditions on the Chattooga River, and please share your big fish pictures with us! We hope to see everyone out on the rivers!

Local Rivers & Fly Fishing Make Sure You Have the Correct Leaders
Rene J. Hesse Certified Casting InstructorFederation of Fly Fishers & Atlanta Fly Fishing and Camping Meetup Organizer When I first started fly fishing for trout, the guy at the fly shop helped me get a few flies picked out and wished me luck. I had a 6wt rod that I used for bass fishing on small streams. I went to the Chattahoochee to give trout fishing a try. After putting all my gear on, I tried to tie on the fly. My mono leader that worked well for bass was not going to work for the small fly, as it was too thick to go through the eye of the hook. No one told me I had to learn some math to go trout fishing. I am sharing this information so it doesn’t happen to you. THE RULE OF 4: Divide the size of the hook by 4 to determine the size tippet to use. That is, what ‘X’ to use. (See below to understand what X is all about). If you have a fly that resists the wind, you may want to use a heavier tippet if it will fit. For selective trout, you may go smaller. 0X is thick, 6X is thin. You want to match the leader to the fly so it will go through the eye and get a smooth loop turn over. If you have a tippet with too small a diameter, IT WILL NOT SEND THE LOOP DOWN THE LINE TO THE FLY, AND THE LOOP WILL COLLAPSE. Here are some examples of the RULE OF 4: IF YOU HAVE A SIZE 12 FLY, USE AT LEAST A SIZE 3X TIPPET TO MAKE A SMOOTH

TRANSITION. SIZE 18 FLY---SIZE 4X OR 5X TIPPET, SIZE 12 FLY--3X TIPPET, SIZE 8 FLY-- SIZE 2X TIPPET, and SIZE 6 FLY-- 1 x or 2 X. You can always go smaller in diameter. This is a size guage, not a situation measurement. Some leader material is presented in decimals. Here is how to convert that into an ‘X’. THE RULE OF 11: To determine the diameter of a leader, remember that .011 = 0X. If leader is a .007, deduct the 7 from 11 and you have a 4x leader. Rule of 11: .011-.007= 4X. 011-.005= 6X, etc. If you want to know the approximate breaking strength of that ‘X’ leader you bought, use the Rule of 9. THE RULE OF 9: To determine the pound breaking strength of a 5X TIPPET; deduct the ‘X’ FROM 9. IE. 9-5X = 4-pound test, 9-1X = 8-pound test, 9-6X = 3-pound test. I always like to use the heaviest tippet with the lightest rod combination. I hope you get out soon and have the correct equipment to catch the big ones. As a side note, The Federation of Fly Fishers has changed its name to Fly Fishers International. They have a wealth of information on their website and promote conservation and education through fly fishing. Join us!

We Got Rainbows Too! There is a lot talk about our wonderful wild brown trout fishery on the Chattahoochee, but did you know we have a thriving rainbow trout fishery as well? There are four categories of rainbow trout in the Buford Dam tailwater; wild-streambred, fingerling-sourced, stockers and hold-over-stockers. Wild-stream-bred rainbow trout in the river are fish that have successfully hatched from eggs laid by mature trout. Spawning sites are gravel bars, either in tributaries or in the main stem. Typically, we see these stream-hatched fish in good numbers following a cold winter. Rainbow trout eggs require super cold water temps during egg incubation. Fingerling-sourced rainbows are hatched and reared to fingerling size by kids throughout the metro Atlanta area schools. This is a Trout Unlimited funded program where science teachers are
furnished with a large aquarium with an elaborate filter/refrigeration system to keep the water cool and clean. Students receive fertilized trout eggs which they place in a submerged basket in a gravel nest. Students are responsible for monitoring water quality in the aquarium and raise the fish to about 4 to 6 inches, then release them into the Chattahoochee. It is difficult to distinguish between “stream-bred” and “fingerlingsourced” rainbows, as both have brilliant colors along with par marks, which is Mother Nature’s camouflage for young trout to elude predators. Stocker and hold-over rainbows are trout raised and stocked by the GA DNR at catchable sizes from 8 to 12 inches. Some of these fish will survive one or more years in the river and grow, often taking on beautiful colors as they naturalize over an extended period with natural diet.

Local Rivers & Fly Fishing OCONEE ON THE FLY SHAD SPAWN
By Wayne Moore www.oconeeonthefly.com The shad spawn! It is starting to happen now in mid-April, and I suspect it will go through at least the first week in May. I threw my cast net this week in 3 feet of water and caught a fair amount of threadfin shad. This means the shad will be shallow, on the sea walls, and a great time for fly fishing for both hybrids and largemouth. Hybrids – They have moved up higher in the water column and can be found near the dam and during the shad spawn all over the lake up to the highway 44 bridge. I like to cast a Clouser, Wiggle Minnow, or any shad imitation fly to the sea walls. Spin fisherman can do the same with Shad Raps, spinnerbaits and shad swim baits. For large numbers of fish, throw a cast net and flat line shad behind the boat. Guide boats all have invested in great bait tanks. I have a Super Saver 2 (35 gallon). Treat the water with salt or “Shad Crack” that you can get at Striper Soup in Acworth. This shop will give you great advice on netting and storing shad. Crappie – By May, the spawn will be pretty much over and the crappie will start to move towards deeper water and brush piles. From May and through the summer there are two main techniques for crappie. The first is finding and fishing brush piles and deep-water structure. Once you locate brush piles, you can drop a minnow just above them and catch a lot of crappie. Lake Oconee guide, “Oconee Al
Basset” pioneered this technique years ago and was the first to use a “drop shot” rig for fishing brush piles with minnows here; the rest of us learned from him. The second technique is long lining behind the boat. This will work well in May. Find submerged trees and troll at 9/10 mph just above the trees with a Triple Ripple or similar jig. I like the June Bug color. Largemouth Bass – The topwater bite should be good early mornings in May. I had a customer out on Sunday and it was the first time he ever caught a largemouth on a fly rod. He was thrilled! It was a simple set up. We use a 9-foot, 8 weight Scott rod, intermediate line (that sinks a little) and a 9-foot, 10-pound leader. The fly was a Wiggle Minnow, and with the intermediate line, runs almost a foot under the surface when stripped steadily. By the end of May, I’ll switch to mainly using a small Clouser fly like Henry Cowen’s Something Else. Final words – You may have noticed that I mention other guides here. I have learned so much from these professionals that I feel obligated to mention them. I want to take you out, and I am probably the only guide here that does fly fishing trips on Oconee. All the guides here are great. If you don’t book a trip with me, give one of them a call. You will learn more in a day with a guide than you would learn in a year on your own. The “pump back bite” will start in June. We are booking up quickly, so e-mail me at wmoore1700 @ outlook.com and request your dates. A Great Place To Stay In Blue Ridge.
Contributed by James Bradley www.ReelEmInGuideService.com (706) 273-0764
Sight fishing for trout can be a fun way to catch them. It can also be an easy way since what you are seeing is trout actively feeding. The two easiest ways to sight fish are to be looking for rises and looking for trout to be feeding on the bottom of the stream. To gain a better understanding of the rises that trout perform to feed, we simply need to examine the type of rise. There are mainly three types of rises: the sip rise, head to tail rise and splashy rise. These three types are the ones trout will use to take a floating insect from the surface, from just underneath the surface, and above the surface. The sip and head to tail rise will form dimple rings on the surface as long as the current isn’t too strong. The dimple rings are left behind where the trout slightly broke the surface of the water for the sip. You may not see the trout at all, but the rings are left as evidence. Head to tail is where the trout breaks the surface with his head first. You might see his dorsal fin and then finally the tail. Lastly, the splashy rise is where the trout completely clears the water and is usually catching an insect that is laying or depositing its eggs on the water. The sip rise means trout are probably surface feeding on mayflies or possibly stoneflies. The head to tail rise means trout are probably subsurface feeding on insects in the surface film like a mayfly, ant or grasshopper, or maybe a nymph struggling to get to the surface. The splashy rise means trout are feeding on insects above the surface like a caddis that is laying its eggs. With a good pair of polarized sunglasses, a common way to easily spot trout feeding on the bottom of a stream is to watch for the silver flash or possibly tailing. When trout take nymphs off the bottom, they will turn sideways to get their mouth into a proper position to take the insect. This is where the silver flash comes from. Tailing is when a trout has its tail protruding toward the water’s surface. They 8 ATLANTA
MAY 2018
2018 ATL mayUPDATE.indd 8
do this to dig or root the bottom’s surface for immature insects, grubs, etc. You will more than likely not see their tail sticking up out of the water like a redfish. Avoid these common mistakes: Do not cast to the rise. Trout will leave their lie to examine an insect (your fly) and actually float downstream with the insect before the rise. After the trout rises, it will move back upstream to its lie. If you cast to the rise, that trout has probably already moved upstream and will never see your offering. Do not cast to a trout displaying a silver side unless you have your fly at the correct depth. Remember, that fish is looking down at the bottom. If your fly isn’t on the bottom, it will never be seen. If you are wanting to try fly fishing for the first time, want the watchful eye of a casting instructor to help improve your casting, or just unsure of what you may be doing, we have several guides that teach the “Art of Fly Fishing”, entomology, stream reading, etc. We are a full time fly fishing guide service with professional guides from across North Georgia. Water temperature: low 60s, level: + or - 6 feet depending on the day, clarity: 5 feet. The bite has been really good and consistent. The stripers and hybrids are moving in and out of the creeks looking for bait. Start in the back and work your way out looking for any signs of life on the sonar. Most of the fish we are seeing are in groups of 3 to 4 with most fish being close in size. After the sun is up, look for the fish to move a little deeper and hold on the bottom. We have been catching them mid-day at 40 to 60 feet. Live bait is key, and the fresher the better. The big spotted bass bite has been better then I’ve seen in years. Lots of 3 to 4-pound fish have been caught and released in the past

month. I expect the green fish to be very prolific this year post-spawn. Walleye are around in spurts. We won’t see one for a week then catch 4 or 5. We have seen a few really nice fish in the 6 to 7-pound range while fishing at night under the Hydro Glow light. A 30 foot bottom seems to be the most productive and is where I start looking for fish. A lot of the creek arms mid-lake are holding fish in this depth range. The night bite has been a lot of fun with both live bait and on fly. Fish feeding up shallow are eager to eat a well-placed fly as well as a live bait. May is a great month to be on the water with us day or night.

LANIER STRIPERS
Forecast By: Steve Scott http://TeamLanier.wordpress.com/menu May is striper month. The fluctuating weather patterns we had in March and April have calmed, and the fishing is on fire. Water temperatures are in the mid-seventies. We’re using topwater baits like Zaras on points and reef poles when cloudy and lobbing Redfins and flukes at rocky banks; Umbrella Rigs over points if sunny; freelines with blueback herring 100 feet back, over main lake points and humps weighted and unweighted; and planer boards over the river channel weighted and unweighted 30-50 feet behind the boards. Locations to try out would be LM 55 and in front of the buoys at the Chattahoochee Country Club marina, the power lines on the
right side of Gainesville Creek, the channel side of River Forks Island, Lake Markers C1 and C3 behind the “ground hog” on the Chestatee River, in the Chattahoochee River at LM 36 to 38 by the two islands around the back, LM 29 to 31 and in the back of Balus Creek by the blue dock back to the shallows. Plan on running a planer board within 3 feet of the bank in the back of the creeks with a mongo gizzard shad early in the morning. Let’s take a moment to mention surfacing or nervous bait behind a planer board. Sometimes a striper is hesitant to take the bait moving along at a steady pace. You will need to entice the striper by changing up the presentation by either having a blueback herring ready on a spinning rod and lobbing it near the surfacing fish, speeding up slightly, or letting out some line to induce a strike. If you are finding stripers but they are not interested in your pre-
sentation, you should chum some of your blueback herring by cutting off their tails and tossing it all into the water. Another method to use is to drop an 8-inch Ben Parker Spoon to the bottom then power reeling it to the surface, but be sure to have a couple of downlines with blueback herring shallow under the boat. If
the stripers get interested in the flash of the injured baitfish rising quickly to the surface, they will certainly notice the other baitfish sitting under your boat and go after the easier targets. TIP of the month: When fishing in windy conditions, use a wind sock to slow the boat down. Visit my website at TeamLanier.com.

SEMINOLE
Forecast By: by Paul Tyre paultyrefishing@yahoo.com Water temperature: 71 degrees, lake level: full pool, clarity: stained to clear. The bass fishing has been excellent on Lake Seminole this spring. The bass have had a great spawn and are going into their post-spawn patterns. We have been getting some explosive strikes on topwater lures like a Strike King Popping Perch in leopard perch color fished around and through the grass. When fishing this bait, or any hollow-body style lure, your rod, reel and line setup is critical for the best results. A heavy-action rod, at least 7 feet in length with a soft tip, is essential to make the bait work properly and to get those big Lake Seminole bass out of the grass. I prefer a high-speed reel and a minimum of 50-pound braided line. Bass have also been being caught on a stick-style worm like a Strike King Shim-e-Stick in green pumpkin fished around the numerous sand bars found around the lake. I like to

Lynn Lewis and Paul Tyre with a handful of big Seminole bass Texas rig this bait with no weight using a 4/0 EWG worm hook using 16-pound fluorocarbon line fished slowly for the best results. The crappie have finished spawning and are being caught on minnows and jigs in 8 to 10 feet of water near spawning flats. Shellcracker and bream have started bedding and are being caught on red wigglers in the Spring Creek arm of the lake. The folks at Wingate’s Lunker Lodge say they expect to start seeing some nice ones crossing their docks in coolers soon as they have been selling the fire out of wigglers.
Water temperature is right around 60 degrees, a few degrees cooler in the early morning. With the lake level just below full pool. The water in the backs of creeks is moderately to heavily stained. Three boats from our club went out recently, all fished in different parts of the lake and all reported great catches. The fish that we caught were on docks at 15-20 foot depths. The day was partly cloudy and wind was relatively calm. Both the Chestatee and the Chattahoochee are performing equally well. Bobby Garland and Jiffy Jigs worked well. We saw plenty of bait, and marked lots of roaming fish. That means that long
line trolling should be very effective using 1/16 ounce jigs with curly tails. We feel that on most of the docks we fished that a crappie minnow would work just as well as a jig. There was hardly any traffic on the water, but that will almost certainly change as the weather warms up. Helpful tip: do not use any line heavier than 4-pound test, and nothing heavier than 1/24 or 1/32 ounce jig heads tied directly to the line (no swivels). It appears that the fish we caught had completed their spawn, as their bellies were not as fat as they were a month ago. We are checking our stand-alone brush piles but have not found fish on them yet, so we are still concentrating on shooting docks. Fishing should continue to be strong for the next couple of months, so call a friend, get out on the water and enjoy fishing! Wear your life jacket as it can save your life!

Water temps are mostly in the 70s and low 80s. The lake is mostly clear and about two feet below our original full pool level of 635 +-. Bass: Good - Largemouth are being caught on several different patterns. Topwater baits such as Pop R’s, Zara Spooks and buzzbaits can be extremely effective for shallow and aggressive fish, especially around bream beds. The second pattern that works really well is to look for spawning shad. Try fishing rip rap around bridges with spinnerbaits, small crankbaits, and Zoom Superflukes. Lots of spotted bass are caught by casting Spot Remover heads loaded with Shakey Tail worms or just dragging a Carolina-rigged Zoom finesse worm or mini lizard around sloping gravel banks. Linesides: Excellent - Spawned out hybrids and stripes show back up down lake in May. Expect the down-
line bite on live bait to be awesome! Some fish starting surface schooling on the main lake and can be caught on small crankbaits, topwaters, pop-ncork rigs and Storm Swim Shad lures. Crappie: Fair - Spawned out fish will typically move out and hold on deeper brush and structure or under docks for a while to recover. Night fishing should also improve in May. Bream: Good - Don’t forget about our bream and shellcracker. Bedding usually takes place on the full moon cycles in May. Look for shallow cover in the backs of pockets. Sandy flats and stump beds tend to draw the fish like a magnet. Use live pink worms, crickets and small jigs for the best results. Catfish: Good - Lots of channel cats are being caught by the few anglers that target them. Live and cut baits and worms fished on bottom will catch cats all over the lake, as long as fairly deep water is nearby. Jug fishing is also fun and productive. To target flatheads, go to a larger bait like a 4-5 inch bream or large shiner and fish the same areas.

Forecast by: Capt. Wes Carlton Georgia Lake Fishing 770-318-9777 www.georgialakefishing.com Water temperature: 57 degrees, clarity: slight stain. Bass: The bass bite has been great the last couple of days. Most of the largemouth have spawned and are hungry! We have been catching some really nice fish in the backs of the creeks. Plastic worms on bullet weights have been working best. We have been using a variety of colors and morning dawn has been working best. Topwater frogs have also been producing some fish. Try targeting water 3 to 9 feet deep in and around brush. The spotted bass should be pulling up shallow over the next few of days. We have been catching some nice spots on a Chug Bug. Look for this pattern to continue over the next week or two. Brown Trout: The trout bite
has really picked up over the last few weeks. We have been catching these fish midway back in the creeks. Trolling small Rapala Countdown crankbaits has been working best. We have also caught a few trolling medium shiners tipped with a split shot. Look for this pattern to continue for a few weeks. There are some really large schools of younger fish in the 10 to 20 foot water depth. Sight fishing for these schools and casting to them has been the ticket. Walleye: The walleye bite has been decent the last few weeks. They have all spawned and made their way back down the river channels toward the main lake. Look for fish in 15 to 25 feet of water. We have been working a stand-up jig with a medium shiner in the 13 to 20 foot water depth. We have caught some big walleye the last few trips. These fish seem to be very healthy this year. Look for walleye to go a little deeper the next few weeks. These fish will start staging in 25 to 40 feet of water.

Local Lakes & Forecasts Confidence is Your Best Bait! Contributed By: Jay Striker www.jaystriker.com In my many years of fishing, I have found just about every bait in my boat. You name it, from everything that spins, cranks, pops, flops, chugs, and crawl. I have one in my boat. With all of the years that I have been fishing, I have caught fish on every one of the aforementioned. However, the one thing I want to discuss is the one bait that you must have on every body of water you fish, and that bait is confidence. That’s right, let me say that again, CONFIDENCE! Not just any confidence either, you must have an un-wavering, un-shakable confidence. Let me discuss what this bait will do for your fishing in the next few paragraphs by discussing what it means in fishing, where you
get it, and how to use it. Let’s go! What does it mean to have confidence while fishing? Confidence is that part of fishing where you are not arrogant but are very sure of yourself and everything you are working on, and where you have the ability to narrow down the variables that can chip away at your time and efficiency. It’s almost like a sixth sense that is earned from the hard work put in during practice; your game plan, your mind set, your focus. Again, understand that it’s not arrogance in the common sense, it is confidence. Where does this bait come from? The bait of confidence comes from inside of your mind. Why? Because what you can control in your mind,
you can control in your body. The mind is the most powerful source of control. When you are fishing at the highest levels, the mental game is the end game. Knowing how to take the information that the lake, fish, research, and other conditions hand you and process it in your mind so it can manifest in your decision on the water is where your game plan turns into your win game. Bass fishing competition is a grueling sport that comes down to decisions, and they all start in the mind. Where and when to use the bait of confidence? The bait of confidence has to be used during every cast and every retrieve, but this is obvious. One thing that you must know is that I begin to use the bait of confidence weeks in advance, even before the tournament starts. I deploy confidence while I start to do my discovery plan; my research of the body of water I’m planning to fish. Another time to deploy confidence is during tackle prep, knowing that you have total
confidence in the equipment you are using, knowing that you have checked your reels, lines and hooks ensuring that everything performs at the top level. Don’t forget to ensure the boat, motor, trailer, and electronics are all working and in tip top shape. Whenever you head out to the lake for a day of fishing, be sure to pack everything you need to enjoy the day. However, never forget to pack the bait of confidence in all you do. I’m not saying that each trip will catch fish each time. What I am saying is that having the confidence that you have done everything right the best you can will help you have success on the water. If you have confidence, know where to get it and knowing when and where to use it will make for success in many adventures in the great outdoors. Please be sure to follow me on Instagram, Facebook, You-Tube (On Deck with Jay Striker) and Twitter, all under jay striker. Thanks for all of the feedback you all give me on my articles.

Local Lakes & Forecasts Enjoying May Fishing Dr. Andrew Cox May is a transition month. During this month, outdoor enthusiasts usually experience the last days of moderate temperatures before the dog days of summer. This month, anglers can find cooler temperatures that may be more characteristic of April as well as some hot days more often found during June or even July. Generally, May’s temperatures and weather patterns are more stable than those found during March and April. Over the course of this month, water temperatures are steadily rising as weather frontal systems moving through the area are less frequent and intense than earlier months. Though temperatures during May can be hot at times, anglers can still enjoy time on the water. You can enjoy many hours on the water without profusely sweating or having a heat stroke.
Most freshwater and inshore saltwater fish species are still active during this month. Bass will be moving into deeper waters but can still be located in moderate depth waters before moving into their summertime deep water haunts. They can continue to be found in shallow water, shoreline areas during early morning and evening hours. Panfish and catfish can still be readily located. Crappie will be in deeper water but may be actively caught during nighttime hours. Those anglers who enjoy catching trout in cold water fishery areas in Georgia as well as other southern states will continue to find active fish. This writer enjoys inshore saltwater fishing in Florida’s panhandle region. May continues to be a good month with speckled trout and redfish located fairly
close to coastal shoreline areas. There is the added bonus of catching migratory and other schoolbased fish that at times may be moving through these Gulf of Mexico waters. A variety of baits and artificial lure techniques will continue to be effective over the course of this month. My favorite plastic baits such as worms, tubes, various creature baits as well as jigs come into their own for catching bass and panfish. Traditional lures imitating a waterway’s forage base continue to catch fish. At times, over the course of the fishing day, spinnerbaits, in-line spinners, and buzzbaits will catch bass. Get out and enjoy the warmer temperatures, and stabilizing weather and water conditions found during the month of May. This will be the last month to enjoy the outdoors before the onslaught of truly hot weather making us
retreat to spend considerable hours relaxing under air conditioning. Author’s Note: Dr. Andrew Cox is a contributing writer to outdoor publications and newspapers. He is a member of the Georgia Outdoor Writer’s Association. He has been fishing the waters of Georgia, Alabama, and north Florida for over forty years. He has also fished the waters of most states within the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, New Zealand, Australia, and several Caribbean islands. Dr. Cox financially supports his fishing habits as Professor Emeritus at Troy University, Phenix City, Alabama. He may be contacted at andrewtrout@aol.com.

I’m constantly asked, “What is your favorite lake to fish on?” and I always reply by saying Lake Nottely, especially in the month of May. This is the month we’ve caught almost all of our trophy striper out here. Personally, I don’t think fishing can get any better on this North Georgia lake than it is during the month of May. It’s definitely the trophy-striper time of year. Currently Lake Nottely is on the rise at 5 feet below full pool. Clarity is mostly clear and slightly stained in the backs of some creeks. Water temperatures have been in the mid to lower 60s. Our striper bite has been excellent for this time of year, and we’ve had a really successful spring season thus far. The majority of our fish have been in the 15 to 35 pound range, with several fish caught in late April being in the 30 to 40 pound range. For the month of May, you’ll start seeing these stripers working their way back out of the creeks and into the mouths. You can still find some good fish up the river towards Meeks Park to marker #9. Pulling planer boards and free lines with live herring will be your best technique. As the sun starts beating down,
work your way to deeper water. It never hurts to throw out a couple of down lines. Your early morning and late afternoon bites should be the best, but May also brings with it an amazing topwater bite. Keep a Red Fin or a Spook at the ready, and watch for fish busting on the surface. May is a fantastic month for catching some monster stripers and bass on this North Georgia lake. Give Big Ol’ Fish Guiding Service a call and let the area’s #1 rated guide service put you on some of Lake Nottely’s best trophy fish during the fishing trip of a lifetime. We are a full-time guide service, specializing in striped and hybrid bass. We also serve Lake Apalachia for huge lake trout, and Lakes Nottely, Chatuge and Blue Ridge. And for all your live bait and tackle needs, check out Hughes General Store in Blairsville, GA. They carry everything you need for a successful day of fishing and the best live herring around. So, come fish with the pros for the opportunity to be featured in Angler Magazine—let us help you get your fish on!

Water temperature is finally getting to where it is supposed to be, and the fish have responded. The live bait bite has been good on herring and medium shiners. Spool up a Penn Squall Linecounter reel with fifteen pound Trilene Big Game on a Shakespeare Striper rod. Then be sure to match your hook size to the bait size. on the herring. Be sure to use a Trilene 100% Flourocarbon leader. The topwater bite is also heating up. Rig up a 7 foot Fenwick medium action rod with twelve pound Trilene Big Game line, your favorite topwater lure, and be prepared for the stripers to try to take it away from you. Be sure to take a variety of baits like the Cordell Redfin, the Sebile Magic Swimmer and the Heddon Super Spook. Every day a different one will be the ticket. Personally, the Sebile Magic Swimmer is my favorite. It is a swimbait, so not really a topwater bait, but the stripes love it. No special retrieve, just cast the Magic Swimmer and reel it in until you think you hooked a submarine.

LAKE SINCLAIR BASS
Ken Sturdivant ken@southernfishing.com Lake Sinclair is down 1.09 feet with the water stained and the temperature in the 70’s. Bass fishing is good. The creeks on the south end of the lake are a little clearer than the rest, but the pockets and coves up the Oconee River arm are a little warmer. Bass are being caught on several baits (all shallow) from crankbaits to jigs and all types of Texas rigged plastics. Shoulder Bone
and Crooked Creek would be excellent creeks to start, moving to the short pockets and coves off the Oconee River arm later in the day. Productive baits this week have been the Zoom floating worm (trick worm) fished on a two foot leader with a small finishing nail or split shot used for weight, and a Texas rigged Yum tube slowly bounced on the bottom. Better color choices have been green pumpkin and June bug. With the warmer water temps, try casting a Bandit 200 or use a Bomber 4A on the spawning banks, and use a medium stop and go retrieve back to the boat.
May 29th Full Flower Moon
Ken Sturdivant ken@southernfishing.com Lake Oconee is full but stained up the rivers. Richland Creek is clear. Bass fishing is good. Some of the bass have started to move into the back of the coves and pockets. You can pick up these fish with a jerk bait fished slowly just under the surface. Spinnerbaits have been producing over the past week. Fish them from the middle of the coves to the back. Docks and wood structure have been the best producers. Match your spinnerbait color to the water color. White/chartreus seem to be the best all around. The shad spawn has not started, but it is coming
up soon. When this happens, the buzzbait bite will also pick up. Striper fishing is good. The best location has been around the dam. Some fish can be found in other locations on the south end, but the dam bite is going strong. Live bait fished on flat lines have been the way to catch these fish. We have been using bass minnows. Also pulling the Mini Mack rigs in the afternoon have been the best producer that time of day. Crappie fishing is fair. The spawn is all but over and the fish are starting to move back out of the coves and pockets. Long lining has been the best producer over the past week. Any jig color will work as long as it has chartreuse in it. The fish are deep, so you need to make sure you are getting your bait down to the fish.

Local Lakes & Forecasts Lanier in May – Topwater and Swimbaits Contributed By: Jim “Jimbo” Mathley www.jimboonlanier.com Lake Lanier is arguably at its very best during the late spring and early summer due to the consistent availability of an aggressive topwater and swimbait bite during this time. In this month’s installment, you will learn the necessary tackle, equipment, locations and resources to catch topwater fish on Lanier. Location: Heading into May under normal weather conditions, most of the spotted bass on Lake Lanier are finishing the spawn, and will begin aggressively feeding to recover from the spawning process. The larger female spots will begin their migration from their spawning haunts to key features at the mouths of the major creeks as well as main lake areas, and can be found on or around: long-running points, rocky shoals and underwater humps/ islands throughout the lake. Locating
these areas will be important to your success. For topwater action, you should utilize either a medium or medium-heavy bait-casting or spincasting outfit, rigged with 12-17 pound Seaguar monofilament line. Monofilament fishing line floats which makes either monofilament or braided line the best option for presenting topwater baits correctly. Lighter poppers and smaller walking baits are often better presented on spinning gear, which allows for easier casting of smaller baits. For swimbaits, I like to present the larger, heavier, mechanical-type swimbaits on a heavy action rod that is at least 7 feet long. My big swimbait rod is from G-Loomis and is a beef stick! It can handle the biggest of swimbaits or A-Rigs. Lures and Presentation: Let’s
examine some of the techniques and lures that can be used to catch these fish. Remember, when the females first come off the bed, they are lethargic, so the use of more subtle techniques such as a fluke or a Picasso Shakedown Head and worm combo can be the ticket. As the post-spawn period progresses, the fish will become much more active and aggressive. The fish at times will feed voraciously, and it is at these times that you should focus on fishing fast-moving baits such as the topwater and swimbait presentations. 1. Topwater - Nothing beats being able to watch a fish crush your topwater bait! There are many choices of baits; poppers, walkers, waking baits, etc. The preference of the fish will change day to day, so make sure to experiment to identify the mood of the fish as well as their preference in presentation. Excellent topwater baits for Lake Lanier include: Lucky Craft Sammy, the Heddon Zara Spook, Pop-R, a Storm Chug-Bug and a Cordell Redfin. 2. Swimbait – Swimbaits offer great versatility as they can be fished at
any depth you wish. Once the post-spawn has advanced, this becomes a great bait to throw around points and humps. As far as the mechanical type swimbaits, I am a HUGE fan of the Sweet Herring Swimbait made by Sweet Baits, a local vendor in the Lake Lanier area. In the soft bodied swimbaits, I prefer the ZMan and Keitech Swimbait offerings. 3. SuperSpin from SuperFish – When the topwater/swimbait bite is tough, pick up your SuperSpin and go to work. Fish the same areas you would normally present your topwater baits and experiment with different depths of the water column. Also, work these lures over brush for big spots. Try a fluke, a Zman, or Keitech swimbait as a trailer. I still have some dates available in June 2017, so call me to book a trip today and reserve your opportunity to come experience some of the best spotted bass topwater action in the country! Wow! Great to meet and fish with light tackle and fly fishing guide Wayne Moore on beautiful Lake Oconee! We met at safelight on a recent Saturday morning at a launch near the dam on Lake Oconee. Our first efforts were to experience Wayne’s skillful fly fishing techniques to try and entice a curious hungry striper or hybrid to attack one of his favorite handtied flies. Angler Magazine Atlanta publisher, Bob Rice, along with yours truly joined along. We got to take turns from the fighting chair casting (in my case whipping!) a beautiful perfectly weighted 9 foot rod trying to entice a willing fish to sample our skills and be first to the photo op! Our host extends his ‘light touch’ magic to frequent fish catching out here on this great lake fishery. He practiced his craft for years as an Atlanta resident enjoying the trout population in the Chattahoochee River. The ‘fly bite’ is often a mystery out here, so your electronics has to be in good working order to mark potential shad chasing fish. We saw some action on the screen, but as you know “you might be able to see them, but you can’t make them bite! Luckily, Wayne was well equipped with conventional light tackle and a supply of lively baits anxious to get in the water! We then enjoyed trolling four free
lines and two down lines to quickly experience some of the finest “singing-drag” hybrid action you could ever want! If you have never experienced Oconee fishing, the time is soon coming when the spawning shad head to the dam (a pretty big dam separating Oconee from Lake Sinclair!) You might want to schedule a trip with Captain Moore’s ‘Oconee on the Fly’ guide service during this period. You will be thoroughly impressed to witness something special when the game fish start hitting the shad bouncing off the rock wall along with the birds swooping down to join in the action! Anyway, back to us finding more action with the hybrids all over the place. “Need the net?” was often asked by the Captain as Bob and I started hitting them two at a time, and I’m telling you with the light spin gear, it was a blast! Close to noon we finished up in a light rain trying once again to entice a bass along the rocky shoreline with the fly rod. We closed in on some of the best looking bank points and stone formations you could imagine and saw some swirls around our sinking fly, but lockjaw prevailed. We can hardly wait to next time to try again. Hopefully, you will soon visit Wayne Moore’s website www. oconeeonthefly.com or call 706816-4281 to speak to this really cool guy who will show you a really cool fishing experience!

Local Lakes & Forecasts CLARKS HILL STRIPED BASS, HYBRIDS AND CRAPPIE by Capt Tony Shepherd and Capt Rocky Fulmer Little River Guide Service lrguideservice@gmail.com (706) 210-3474 The current lake level is remaining steady at 327.12 (2.9 feet below full pool) and surface temperatures on the south end of the lake are around 61 degrees in AM and rising. The major food source for our lake (blueback herring) has responded by moving in and out of the shallows. In some locations, the herring spawn is in full swing. On the south end of the reservoir, it is only in the beginning stages. The stripers and hybrid stripers have been very cooperative and receptive to multiple patterns. Live and cut bait on shallower down rods (12-30 feet), freelined herring, and flatlines with small weights have produced well in the shallows along with a few fish falling for flukes and chrome artificial offerings. All sections of the lake are holding fish now, and the seagulls and loons can help point the way to active feeding fish. The Anthony
Shoals area on the northern end of the lake is a traditional hybrid spawning area, and according to recent reports, is producing very well. Spring fishing techniques should last well into the month of May this year. When the blueback herring spawn runs its course and the bait returns deep, the predator fish will follow and lead to some ferocious down rod feeding. This typically develops around Memorial Day weekend and lasts throughout the summer. The crappie fishing has picked up and many of the fish have spawned with the last full moon. As soon as the females spawn, they will go into a negative mood and hug the bottom for a few days, while the males will remain close to the nest and protect the fry. Trolling jigs can still produce good fish as well as dabbling a cork and jig or minnow in the shallow cover. Look for the lower end to still offer pre-spawn slabs in the coming days.
Competitively priced full-day fishing charters for all levels of experience, equipment, bait, tackle and fish cleaning provided. Fish from the most comfortable, safe and stable boat on the lake.

Dragging
,
N ISHERME F R O F E C INSURAN ISHERMEN BY F
by Billy Darby
Dragging is a style of fishing where there is almost no casting skills required. Boat movement is necessary, whether it be by water movement drift, wind aided drift or trolling motor driven. Most often the lure of choice will be soft plastics, either Carolina style, Texas rigs, skirted jigs with trailers or weighted hooks with finesse type small plastics. Simply make short cast about 20-30 feet or drop your lure to the bottom, then pay out line about the same distance, but try to stagger the distance with each trailing lure. Maintaining bottom contact is essential. These type lures make noise when striking underwater objects, plus they make a silt trail that bass and other species recognize as potential prey. The terrain most associated with dragging is relatively shallow flats with some type structure available, such as rocks, logs or an uneven bottom. Watch your Humminbird very closely as your boat movement will dictate exactly where your lures will soon be and indicate mentioned structure as well as sudden depth changes. A trolling motor is almost required for repositioning or to return to a lodged lure for position to shake free or drag back thru a productive course. Trolling motor driven can be more accurate in your selected approach and staying on a pre- selected course
such as road beds, long ditches or desired ledges. When dragging road beds, it is imperative to constantly monitor your Humminbird to maintain your position directly over the selected road path or the shoulders. The structure, if not already known, may include culverts, boulders or added man-made brush piles, and the list goes on. You may want to mark unusual structure or hot spots to return to as icons or GPS locations or mark about every 100’ or so for future reference in aiding a return trip for exact boat direction. Head into the wind as much as possible when a motor driven approach is needed to help maintain a truer course. Billy Darby is a professional guide on Lake Eufaula. is also another bite going on from Little River all the way up to Fields Landing. If you find the baitfish, you’ll find stripers and hybrids nearby. These fish are feeding up for the upcoming spawn run. Flatlines in the morning and afternoon and downlines mid-day is the way to go. The topwater bite this week has been slow compared to last week. If you are lucky enough to come across breaking fish, Rooster Tails, Flukes, popping corks, jerk baits and freelining shad will all catch you fish right now. Trolling is working really well right now. The Mack Farr 3-arm umbrella rig has been producing best for me. Color doesn’t seem to matter, but speed is a factor. The best speed for me this week has been between 3.3- 3.5 miles per hour.

Everyday Heroes
I am often quite vocal about how good Americans treat its military heroes, and maybe sometimes with all the headlines and parades we forget that there are heroes that live right here among us. It could certainly be argued that your freedom is paid for by the vigilance and sacrifices of its servicemen and women, but your homes, your families and basically everything that you appreciate is protected by the men and women who wear the uniforms of first responders, policemen, firefighters, etc. We lost one of Blue Ridge’s own first responders when Stanley Henson died a couple weeks ago. I knew Stanley for about 10 years, and though we were never close, I did have a chance meeting with him one time a few years back when I was still working as a horseback guide and he was a first responder. I hope to give you a little more insight into what our public servants do for us. I watched Stanley Henson save a man’s life that day, because when the time came and the call went out, Stanley was the first one to respond, put his own life in jeopardy and did it all for what may be enough gas money to make it there and back. I remember that ride very well, not only because it was the kind of beautiful mountain day that Blue Ridge is famous for, but I also remember that ride because I was the man in charge of a scene that got very chaotic, very fast. I tell you now there has never been anyone so happy to see a first responder in history than me that day. It was a simple enough ride, a man, his wife and three teenage boys and everything was going routine until it didn’t. The father was riding directly behind me, and for whatever reason, he had slipped from the saddle and got run over by the horse behind him. The grievous nature of his injuries were immediately apparent by the bone sticking through his shoulder and the blood that was squirting out of it. Basically, my day went from beautiful routine mountain ride to now having five inexperienced riders on horses and a man on the ground going further into shock by 28 ATLANTA

the second. The Marine Corps had taught me to think with a cool head in times of duress, and the success of their methods was in evidence that day as I did manage to get the situation stabilized. I managed to get everyone off of their horses, get the horses tied up, calm them down, which was no small matter, and stabilize the man on the ground as best I could. It bears reminding here that being in the mountains we were probably two miles from the nearest phone service of any kind. We were in the middle of nowhere, and we would not be missed at the barn for at least another two hours. It was a good hour’s walk on foot back to the barn, and while I did have the man stabilized, he needed a hospital fast. Meanwhile, all I could do was keep the man’s face out of the sun, have his family around him talking encouragingly and basically trying to convince them, as well as myself, that I was not scared to death. But as I have said, I am a combat experienced Marine, and somewhere in my experience a thought kicked in, and I remembered that there was a rental cabin about three quarters of a mile from where we were at. While there would be no cell service and no phones of any kind, the only plan I could come up with was to get to that cabin and break as many windows as I could and hope that it had an alarm system that would send help. I did that whole run at a sprint, and that’s exactly what happened. I broke enough windows to get someone’s attention, and Blue Ridge’s Finest showed up. The police were the first to arrive, but when I told them of the situation, they quickly radioed the first responders who came next. I pointed to the officers where we would be, and I ran back to let the people know that I had actually found help and to reassure them. I had tears in my eyes when after about 20 minutes, I looked up from wiping the sweat off of that man’s face and saw Stanley Henson making his way through the woods towards us. There was no trail, as it was thick brush and hard going.
It was him and two other first responders that I terribly wished I remembered the names of. Stanley Henson provided me with the greatest sigh of relief I have ever known in my life when I saw him coming through those woods. He and those other two first responders saved that man’s life, who is still with his family to this day because of them. They got him stabilized on a stretcher and called in a medevac. I watched Stanley that day, and I recognized the cool, calm way he acted. It is no stretch of the imagination that the man on the ground was moments from death, and yet you never could’ve told that
by Stanley Henson’s manner and the calm way he reassured the man on the ground that he would be okay. Everybody went home that day, everybody lived, and it was all because of Stanley Henson and other first responders. But he is not alone in this town of often unsung heroes. In closing, I will tell you this, nothing means more to a veteran than a simple handshake and a thank you for our service. I would dare say the same applies to our public servants; the policeman, fireman, first responders, and the list goes on. So take the time to thank your public servants. It may just be your life they save one day.

The water temps have really jumped up with these warm sunny days and has got the bass moving up and cruising around the spawning areas. I’m starting my mornings out fishing long pebble rocky bank lines and points for spotted bass. I’m targeting these areas with a number of baits; Strike King 1.5 in bream color, 3.5 Rage Swimmer on 1/8-ounce head, Strike King Ocho rigged Neko with a 1/16 tungsten nail weight, shaky head with a Rage Craw, Strike King Pure Poison ½-ounce swim’n jig and tube bait. If it’s windy, throw a 4XD crankbait, ½-ounce spinnerbait, also an A-rig.
This bite will be good for a couple weeks. After that, fish around docks and lay downs with a fluke. Once the sun gets up good, I’ll go looking for largemouth bass in pockets and anywhere there is brush in 3 to 5 feet of water. I’m going to stay back and cast the Neko rig, chatterbait, swimbait or spinnerbait looking for cruising fish so you don’t spook them when going all the way up shallow looking for bed fish. When fishing for bed fish, I use a jig, Neko rig, tube, and shaky head, with colors that I can see them bite. Just remember that these fish are the future of our fishing. When they are locked down on bed, let’s be sure to put them back so they can finish spawning. Give Welch’s Guide Service a call. We’re your #1 guide service, and we’ve been doing it since 2001. Local Lakes & Tournaments LAKE MARTIN Provided By: David Hare Alex City Guide Service 256-401-3089 Water temperature: 65-68 degrees, lake level (490.5), clarity: clear. What an April Alex City Guide Service has had and it’s only mid-April! Hundreds of nice stripers boated including a 41 pounder, two 30 pounders, a 25 pounder, three 20 pounders, and an 18 pounder. Should be many more boated by time you read this. For May, my predictions are that this may actually be like our normal April fishing just due to late spring weather conditions. If so, then May will be an awesome striper month. I am thinking we will be still fishing in the river and main creek channels with planer boards and large live bait. May is also a month that you need to be in your favorite spot by daylight for that early morning bite. Along with good fishing, this month also brings more pleasure boaters out which means a lot of weekend traffic. If
you can possibly fish Monday thru Friday, it will be a lot quieter than Saturday and Sunday fishing. If the weekends are your only time to fish, then you’re still ok, because with Lake Martin’s 800 miles of shoreline and 44 thousand acres, you can always find a secluded area that’s quiet and that will produce fish. Don’t overlook all the amenities that Lake Martin has to offer which includes several restaurants, numerous marinas with gas, supplies, cold beverages, ice and lots of live entertainment, Chimney Rock, Goat Island, Wind Creek State Park, and on and on. If your family is into hiking, drop them off by boat at several of the hiking trails while you go wet a hook for a few hours, and then it’s a win-win for everybody, and a very inexpensive way to entertain the family for the weekend. If you’d like to introduce your family to fishing, consider hiring a reputable guide service, so hopefully their first experiences will be positive. You might start a family tradition with a family fishing trip on beautiful Lake Martin.

Lake Allatoona will be at 840 feet, full pool. Allatoona is looking good and fishing has been excellent to phenomenal! Nearly everybody who ventures out with shad is having success. It seems the slight change in stocking location influenced by our Allatoona Striper Society meeting in 2015 is having a huge positive effect. A big pat on the back to all those involved as well as the GADNR for listening to the experienced anglers’ input. With the apparent excellent fish population in the lake, we’re really hoping the surface activity returns to its daily routine. Surface plugs, spinners, jigs, flukes, spoons, and small swimbait lures should be in your arsenal. Use some 8-pound spinning gear with a 7-foot rod for good casting range and be prepared for the hit. Many larger striper are also be-
ing caught in the Etowah River and some in Little River. Large gizzards are the key here. Anchoring and putting out bait, or beaching the boat, or drifting are all effective tactics, depending on wind and water conditions. Try both live and cut bait. Employing a planer spread out the sides and a balloon out the back is a common tactic. Trolling artificials like Capt Mack U-rigs, deep running cranks like Cordell Down Deep Red Fins, and spinners like 3/8 ounce Rooster Tails in white, chrome, or chartreuse is another option. For the rigs, troll 2.53 mph with 60-100 feet of line out. Chartreuse will be the go-to color on Allatoona. Hit the creek mouths and humps down around the dam for your better opportunities. Local Lakes & Tournaments LAKE BLUE RIDGE By: Shane Goebel Big Ol’ Fish Guiding Service & The Angler Magazine Fishing Team www.bigolfish.com 828-361-2021, 1-844-4-ANGLER Currently, Lake Blue Ridge is 7 feet below full pool. Water temperatures are in the mid 60’s. Water clarity is clear in the main lake and stained in the creeks and rivers. We are still catching a lot of smallmouth and spotted bass all over the lake, with the majority of our smallmouth being caught in the Toccoa River area. Target these fish off rocky points, ledges, and shallow humps around the lake. Also, focus on working the banks that the early morning sun hits first. We are also catching some nice fish under the docks. We are still pulling planer boards with live blueback herring early. It’s also a great idea to set out a couple of free lines 100 to 120 feet behind the boat while you pull planer boards. When the sun really comes up in the mid-morning hours, we’ll switch to down lining live blueback
herring. Most of our fish have been caught in the 15 to 25-foot range. This really seems to be the best technique for the larger smallmouth, but not until the sun really gets up. Look for large schools of smallmouths in the Toccoa River and Star Creek area. Live bait seems to be the key out here lately, but a jigging spoon and shaky head can’t be ruled out. Towards the end of this month these spotted bass will really start schooling up and feeding strong. Also watch for an exciting topwater bite. When they start busting on the surface, they will hit just about anything you can throw at them. In May the walleye will start to head for deeper water. Look for these guys to be suspended off rocky points and on steep ledges throughout the lake. You can also find some stray wanderers on shallow humps. Down lining live bluebacks will work best to target these guys. You can even bounce a few nightcrawlers 6 to 12 inches from the bottom. Also trolling crankbaits and jerkbaits will
get you hooked up. When I decide to pull artificial baits, I always go to my Yo-Zuri Deep Diver, Shad Raps or Smithwick deep divers. Just remember to make some good S turns and keep your speeds around 2 to 3 mph. May is a fantastic month for catching some very big fish on this lake. Give Big Ol’ Fish Guiding Service a call and let the area’s #1 guide service put you on some of Lake Blue Ridge’s best trophy fish. For all your live bait and tackle needs, go check out Hughes General
Store in Blairsville, GA. They carry everything you need for a successful day of fishing. Now, hit the water and go “get your fish on”!

LAKE EUFAULA
By Brian Lee leebrian16 @yahoo.com Water temperature: 65-69 degrees, lake level: full, clarity: stained/clear. The bite is great in the mornings, and topwater is the ticket for this bite. Run and gun spots before the sun gets up. After the sun is up, you can still catch them in any kind of shade using the topwater. Once the sun is high and bright, revert to points and brush piles with a shakey head, Texas rig or a C-rig. The bass are starting to school up on deeper structure and humps as the water temp rises and they prepare for the dog days of summer. Baitfish are the ticket to the deep bite, as the bass will want to stay close to the food. The

afternoon bite is hit or miss. Isolated wood will hold fish as they seek cover from the sun. There’s many different ways to catch them this time of year. Just tie on your favorite baits and start chunking and winding. Till next month, tight lines and remember to introduce a child to the outdoors. They will appreciate it later in life.
Water temperature: low 60's, water level: 188.38, clarity: stained. Bass are shallow around cover. Topwater near cover early, jigs on outside of cover or Texas rigged soft plastics are also a good choice. Deeper fish are responding to Carolina rigged bigger plastics and deep cranks. Lipless crankbaits outside the shore cover will work too. Crappie are in tight cover and on creek ledges. Shellcrackers are on the beds and coming in good numbers. Catfish are really doing well now using jugs with cut bait or wigglers on tight lines.
Bass fishermen, check out the Swab a Hog program online or pick up a kit at most bait stores in Eufaula. Auburn is doing a study on four pound and better bass. All you do is swab the tongue for 10 seconds and place the swab in the pouch. Instructions are simple and in the packet. They are documenting the DNA of the Florida strain in our river bass. Once this is complete, they will be able to release the Florida bass in the river and we will have a larger, faster growing species here. Please check out www. alabamachildrensclassic.org and enter to fish our June tournament. Be safe when on the water and wear your life jackets. We have had too many tragedies in Alabama waters this spring. God Bless & Good Fishing.

Good Times At The Sea Spray Abaco Challenge
F
rom Feb. 7-10, 18 teams gathered on Elbow Cay, Abaco, Bahamas at the Sea Spray Resort and Marina for the Second Annual Sea Spray Abaco Challenge. Hosted by the resort, this tournament is becoming known as one of the most enjoyable in the Bahamas. With prize packages through fifth place, affordable entry and value-added categories, nine radio raffles worth $400 each, team bags and buckets stuffed with goodies and fantastic food and live entertainment, this event is all about having fun. This year’s event raised and donated more than $6,000 to the Hope Town Primary School, Every Child Counts Bahamas and Bahamas Air Sea Rescue Association. Wahoo, blackfin and yellowfin tuna and mahi-mahi are the target species, with teams eligible to weigh their two biggest fish from each species on each day of the three-day competition. This year Team Crab Eyes took home the overall championship with a cumulative weight of 292.6 pounds. These guys finished second in the inaugural event and were eager to take home the win. In second place was Team Sonny Boy with a total of 134.3 pounds. Sonny Boy also weighed the biggest fish in the Wahoo Category, and at 52.9 pounds took biggest fish overall for the tournament. In third place was Team Perfect Timing with a total of 83.2 pounds. These guys came from out of nowhere on the last day to make it onto the podium. Special congratulations to Team Family Circus, which won the local Bahamian championship with a total of 65.9 pounds. Their name will be inscribed on the residual trophy at the resort and they took home a beautiful black grouper mount by tournament sponsor King Sailfish Release Mounts. Tricks of the Trade
L
ike land hunters or rod-and-reel fishermen, spearos also study and perfect some tricks of the trade. Spearos immerse themselves into the fishes’ environment, so the first skill to master is to look like you belong there. Beginners tend to exhibit aggressive behavior, chasing and spooking fish. If fish scatter when you get near, study how calmly an experienced diver moves in the water. Until you achieve a non-threatening aura, all other tips and tricks will be useless. After achieving smooth diving technique, here are some techniques to get near fish. 1) Aspetto (Italian for “wait”)—It starts from the surface with a smooth duck-dive into the water while removing the snorkel. You descend with soft kicks until you begin to free-fall as you scan the bottom. By turning your fin blades, you maneuver to the right spot, perhaps where the reef meets sand. You lie motionless on the bottom until curious fish come to check you out. Moving only your eyes, you pick out the prey, move your gun slowly, and make a well-placed shot. A good spearo will make this technique look easy, but it is not. This is especially effective with evasive fish that become curious when you do not move, such as mutton snappers in Florida, stripers in the northeast, and bigeye emperors in Hawaii. 2) Agguato (Italian for “ambush”)–This is a dynamic stalking technique to get closer to prey without being noticed. The diver navigates the bottom using the environment to get closer to the prey. The diver must consider current, visibility and available bottom structure while moving from one object to another, blending into shadows or hiding behind reef formations. If your body can be hidden while closing the gap, the fish will remain unaware of your presence.
CANGL_FIL1-FIL4.indd 4
3) Flashers/ Sheri Daye practices “aspetto” technique. chum—Especially Photo by Joe Marino effective for hunting pelagics such as jacks, tunas, dolphin and wahoo. Multiple mirrors dangle below a float, and the flashes of light in the water imitate the reflective glare from a school of baitfish. The fish come in to investigate. Chum can be used in combination with a flasher to bring them even closer and keep them interested. In addition to these techniques, serious spearos are likely to train in a pool, use meditation techniques, and do cardio exercises to increase their breath hold capacity. Many take freediving classes to increase bottom time and safety. While there is no certification required to do it, classes should be a pre-requisite, as freediving is a sport that can lead to “blackout” and death if not practiced correctly. Spearfishing is a beautiful, selective way to catch fish, but it is also physically and mentally demanding. Above all, be safe and happy hunting! Sheri is a world-record holder, host of Speargun Hunter, and producer of The Blue Wild Ocean Adventure Expo in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. Follow “Sheri Daye” and “The Blue Wild” on Facebook and Instagram.

n the year 1947, the very first “green trout” (bass) I ever remember seeing was caught by my grandfather as he walked along the edge of a pond with a jigger pole. This was an old-time method for catching green trout. It consisted of a long reed pole with a big treble hook adorned with flannel strips, pork skin and knitting yarn tied to the end of the pole. While walking the bank, this lure was dabbled along the pond’s edge. When the bass hit, there was no bending of the pole or setting the hook, just straight up the bank with fish in tow until there was no chance of the fish flopping back into the water. It was essentially the same technique early naturalist William Bartram described being used by Native Americans in accounts from 1791. As with all generations, each assumes that the way it is now is the same way it has always been. Fishing styles, lures, boats, motors and technology are the same and will be so until some serious reasoning is considered. My next big learning experience was casting with a steel rod and level-wind reel spooled with braided line. The lure was the forerunner of today’s plastic worm. These lures were made of red or black strips of inner tube rubber about 8 inches long and about ½-inch wide, folded in the front to form a head in front of a weedless hook with a split-lead sinker as a weight. In the mid 1950s, someone invented the Golly Whopper plastic worm with two imbedded weedless hooks, soon followed by an earthworm-look assembled with a weedless hook harness with a front spinner. Wooden topwater lures have been around since forever, with different forms and paint schemes. During the early 1960s came the advent of hollow plastic topwater lures that replaced almost all of the wooden ones. Then came rattles and plastic-lipped divers. Then, in the early 1970s, someone came up with the term “crankbait,” and a big plastic lip allowed for deeper presentation. The bass-fishing revolution would never look back. But some of us can still remember the early post WWII days with a fond memory. Today’s lure-making technology is expanding at a rapid pace, and we can expect lures to be the exact replica of prey and duplicate the sound emissions perfectly. Sonar electronics with computer-aided technology will show actuality as if we were looking into a camera. Similar enhancement will identify the targeted species, and if the human mind can conceive an idea, expect the future to produce what once was a dream. Inspired by the traditional Clouser and Henry Cowen’s Something Else, Michael Bowen has had recent success on a slightly tweaked variation. On recent trips to a nearby reservoir, he noticed the fatter blueback herring seen during the day and on dock lights. His variation involves adding a pearl EP brush and layers of Flash’n Slinky under the polar fiber to create a thicker midsection in the fly. The addition of the brush and Flash’n Slinky helps prevent matting as well as maintaining more body while stripping. So far, we’ve gotten great feedback from fish where herring and similar baitfish are present. In different color schemes, it should work wherever baitfish have a little wider profile. Tie one up for yourself and let us know where it works for you. t’s all too easy to read fishing articles and have it be entertainment and inspiration instead of education. What can you do to begin to accelerate your learning curve? First, start taking notes. That’s right, this is your leisure time and you’re not in school any more but its time you take your game up a notch. Get a notebook; this could be the back half of the fishing log book you started, and start using it when you read articles in magazine, books or online subscriptions. Review your notes after you finish reading an article and make sure you understand those notes. If not, get in touch with the author if possible and ask. Next, using Google Earth (the program—not Google Maps satellite version) make a game plan based on what you learned from the article. Take screen shots and print them to remind you what your plan is and take these with you in the boat with your notes. Execute the plan, and stay on task. I find that it’s all too easy for a student to begin the plan that was laid out, only to quickly let it evaporate and punt, reverting to old habits once on the water. Hope these notes help you become a better student of your teachers. Always feel free to contact us at TroutSupport.com for support in improving your coastal inshore fishing game. Tobin created TroutSupport.com - tech support for trout and redfish anglers.

ver the years, much has been written about the Western North Carolina trout waters of Brevard, Sylva and Cherokee. And for good reason – each of those areas possesses popular waters regularly stocked by the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission. One place that has traditionally flown under the radar is Hendersonville. If you’re looking for a new spot to fish in the North Carolina mountains, or simply prefer fishing less-crowded waters, Hendersonville and Henderson County offer a nice supply of stocked and native streams that are not as well-known. North Mills River is the prime trout fishing venue in Henderson County. The river has a 4-mile section of delayed harvest waters that receives an annual infusion of 11,000 trout from N.C. Wildlife. May is a great time to fly fish the delayed harvest waters of North Mills River because no trout have been harvested since Sept. 30, and it’s designated only for artificial, single-hook lures at that time. Beginning at noon the first Saturday in June and running through Sept. 30, the waters are open to all anglers with no bait restrictions, with a creel limit of seven trout per day. Another nice thing about fishing North Mills River is its location. It is part of the North Mills River Recreation Area of the Pisgah National Forest, which offers camping and miles of wild trout waters, along with hiking trails, biking trails and picnic shelters. North Mills River Campground is open year-round with 31 standard sites, plus one site with full hook-up. There are tent pads, fire pits and bathhouses with hot showers and flush toilets. The campground is adjacent to the delayed harvest section of North Mills River, and also a short drive from the more well-known Davidson River trout waters near Brevard. Other well-kept secrets for fishing in Henderson County are three streams on the eastern side of the county, about 20 to 30 minutes from downtown Hendersonville. Rocky Broad River has a 1.2-mile stretch of hatchery supported waters from Rocky River Lane to the Rutherford County line near Chimney Rock, while Cane Creek, near the Fletcher community, has a 1.5-mile stretch of hatchery supported waters. For those who really want an undiscovered gem, there’s an 8-mile stretch of hatchery-supported waters on Clear Creek, which flows through the hills and valleys of Henderson County’s apple orchards in the shadows of Bearwallow Mountain. Of course, many anglers like to fish secluded areas, while sleeping in more comfortable quarters, and there is no shortage of lodging in Hendersonville. Everything from economy to deluxe hotels, from rental cabins to vacation rentals to bed-and-breakfast inns are available in Hendersonville. And when the fishing is done, Hendersonville provides plenty of options for exploring the outdoors, listening to music, sipping craft beverages and enjoying great meals. DuPont State Recreational Forest lies just southwest of Hendersonville. The forest includes more than 10,000 acres of woods and trails for hiking and biking. The most popular attractions within the forest are waterfalls. Triple Falls has a vertical drop of 120 feet with
three distinct cascades. DuPont’s pristine falls and forests attracted film crews from “Last of the Mohicans” and “The Hunger Games.” An awesome view of the Mills River Valley is available from Jump Off Rock, one of the more easily accessible grand views in the North Carolina mountains. Less than 15 minutes from Hendersonville’s Main Street, Jump Off Rock features a small park leading to a granite rock with spectacular panoramic views of the river valley framed by the Blue Ridge and Great Smoky Mountains. On a clear day, four states—North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee—are visible from this spot. Hendersonville’s music scene thrives with support from its summer concert series. Music on Main Street brings a live band downtown every Friday night from mid-June to mid-August. The concerts take place on the permanent stage in the Visitor Center parking lot. People kick back in lawn chairs as the sun sets. A classic car show is held each evening in conjunction with the concert. Meanwhile, the Rhythm & Brews concert series combines the local beverage scene with live music once a month from May through September. The concerts take place on the third Thursday and include a variety of music, food, beer, wine and cider. A stroll through the pedestrian-friendly downtown, with its wide, winding sidewalks, reveals bear statues painted by local artists. The Bearfootin’ Art Walk begins in May when 20 bears are placed downtown and concludes with a charity auction in October when the bears find their permanent homes. The abundance of orchards makes Henderson County an ideal location for the emerging hard cider market. Three cideries now operate in the county: Flat Rock Ciderworks on Main Street, Bold Rock Hard Cider in Mills River and Appalachian Ridge Artisan Ciders in a 1940s-era barn-turned-cidery. The Cheers! Trail brings together cideries, wineries and breweries for a countywide tasting experience. Two vineyards produce high-quality wines from European varietals. Burntshirt Vineyards also makes an apple wine. Sierra Nevada’s new state-of-the-art brewery and taproom is a mecca for craft-beer aficionados. Downtown Hendersonville boasts 25 independent restaurants, and several of them offer alfresco dining on the sidewalks. Never Blue, a tapas-style restaurant with worldly flavors, rolls up its garagedoor front on pleasant evenings. Diners enjoy small plate delicacies, creative tacos and decadent desserts. Postero, another Main Street standout, presents New American fare that is both familiar, yet innovative. The chicken and waffles dish is garnished with foie gras maple syrup, and kimchi rémoulade tops the lunchtime burger. The menu changes seasonally and showcases local ingredients. Another downtown hot spot is Mezzaluna, specializing in wood-fired pizzas and homemade pastas. Mezzaluna has a chefdriven menu with Italian influences complemented by a craft beer lineup that is heavy on local labels. Just up the street, Umi serves fresh sushi and sashimi, and several bento boxes for those who want to try a little of everything. ho doesn’t have a smile on their face when they’re spending time on the water? You can’t help yourself. Boating is the definition of getting away from it all. And getting away from it all is always more fun with friends. This is where the United States Power Squadrons – America’s Boating Club comes in. Enjoying your time on the water with family and friends starts with being safe and responsible while having fun. That’s what makes America’s Boating Club different than most boating organizations. For over a hundred years, the organization’s focus has been on providing unsurpassed boating safety education. But the organization’s leadership and members are passionate about a membership that doesn’t end on Sunday and doesn’t care if the calendar says it’s winter. It’s about being together and building a community through a variety of events like parties, meetings and even just getting together for no reason at all. Driven by this passion, United States Power Squadrons – America’s Boating Club, the country’s largest nonprofit boating organization, just launched its new logo. This is the first of several planned updates in the organization’s new brand image and identity. Changes to the organization’s website, social media platforms and collateral are expected in the coming weeks. “We are United States Power Squadrons, but we are also America’s Boating Club,” said Gary Cheney, chief commander, United States Power Squadrons. “This is not just a name change, it describes what we do. We go boating and have fun doing it. Our squadrons are social clubs as well as providers of high quality boating education – allowing members to enjoy the sport and camaraderie of boating and any number of activities that keep us together. Togetherness is what this lifestyle is all about. We joined the organization for the boating education, but we stayed for the friends.”
Offering classes For Boaters, By Boaters in boat handling, navigation, boat maintenance, weather and related subjects, United States Power Squadrons – America’s Boating Club serves as a virtual “yacht club” with boating and social activities for all types of recreational boaters. With over 27,000 members organized into 356 local clubs across the country, America’s Boating Club is comprised of families who contribute to their communities by promoting safe boating through education. Members are vital to strengthening the communities they live in and know it’s important to live their values by giving back through public service and volunteer opportunities. Members provide courtesy vessel safety checks, help the NOAA’s National Ocean Service keep nautical charts accurate and organize beach cleanups. “Our commitment is to continue learning, teaching, laughing and helping our fellow members enjoy boating,” continued Cheney. “Whether you’re passionate about cruising, racing, making new friends, volunteering in your community or learning from experienced boaters, your local squadron has the resources you need to engage your passions and, perhaps, instill some new ones.” In February of 2017, the United States Power Squadrons announced its America’s Boating Club co-brand to its squadrons, following an almost yearlong re-naming exercise. Popticals Are Performance Glasses
Without The Hassle
For any outdoor adventure—whether it’s hiking, fishing or camping—you need high-performance sunglasses. No matter if it’s a day hike or a multi-day camping trip, sports sunglasses keep your eyes safe when you’re outside and enhance your vision to make your experience even better. The problem is, there’s nowhere to keep your sunglasses when it’s time to take them off. Cases are too big and take up valuable pack space. They’re big and bulky in your pocket, if they even fit there. Most resort to hanging expensive glasses on a strap around their necks or
perching them on their heads. That’s no way to treat a valuable piece of equipment. Without protection, your sunglasses end up scratched, lost or broken, and you didn’t just hike into the backcountry to view breathtaking vistas through scratched lenses. Popticals are the solution to this dilemma. They are good-looking, high-performance, polarized sports sunglasses that fold down to a small profile and fit in a portable, durable case. Popticals feature the patented FL2 Micro-Rail System, which is a breakthrough design that allows for folding sunglasses that are sturdy and hold up to rugged use. The case is less than half the size of cases for most comparable high-performance sunglasses. Slip it into your pocket, where it is unobtrusive. Throw it in your backpack without having to worry about damage to your frames or lenses. Or clip it with the attached carabiner to the outside of your gear, where your shades will be safe but easily accessible. In addition to taking up less space when stored, Popticals are also lightweight. With NYDEF nylon lenses manufactured for Popticals by Carl Zeiss Vision, they weigh significantly less than glasses with glass lenses without sacrificing on clarity or performance. Popticals feature high-quality polarized lenses but weigh less, which makes them more comfortable on your face for all-day wear. For backpackers, it also cuts down on the load your shoulders will be hauling. “Pack Small. Live Big” is a motto Popticals has adopted. The idea is that your gear should enhance your experience, not weigh down or inconvenience you. With Popticals, you’ll have clearer, better vision for your adventure. And when you don’t have them on, you won’t have to worry about them being lost, scratched or broken. For more on Popticals and to see all of their sunglasses, go to www. popticals.com.
SEE MORE. CATCH MORE. PopH2O with NYDEF™ lens technology lets you see sharper details beneath the surface of the water to catch the fish your buddies can’t even see. Polarized NYDEF™ nylon lenses made by Carl Zeiss enhance your vision with the clarity of a glass lens at a fraction of the weight. Spend less time guessing at what you’re seeing in the water, and more time catching fish. #SeeMoreFishCatchMoreFish

fISHLIGHT
The Ultimate Fish Attractor!

The BoJo Fishlight is no ordinary fishlight. The unique design feeds your fish by knocking bugs into the water… still alive! The unit has two fluorescent bulbs that attract bugs. Once bugs come to the light, an electric motor with weed eater-cord blades knocks bugs into the water where fish eat them all night long. The Bo-Jo Fishlight works great on fresh or saltwater, on ocean docks, large lakes and small ponds. Bugs come to the light, bugs get knocked in the water, baitfish feed on bugs, big fish feed on baitfish, and you catch the big fish! The device is simple to install. The durable docklights also give you illumination to enjoy nighttime activities and costs less than a nickel a night to operate. Compared with the cost of mechanical feeders, the device will pay for itself in the first year. For more information and to watch a video, see the website or scan the barcode. PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT Road Shower THE SOLAR SHOWER OF THE FUTURE IS HERE!
Running water is nice to have when you’re on the road to adventure, but many times it is awfully hard to find. The Road Shower is like adding plumbing to the rack of your vehicle. It gives outdoors enthusiasts easy access to hot or cold pressurized water wherever the road takes them. It’s simple; mount The Road Shower to the roof rack, fill the tank with water and let the sun do the rest. With a handy temperature gauge, it’s easy to watch the progress as solar power heats the water inside at a rate of 12 to 20 degrees per hour on a sunny day. By the time you return from a trail ride or day of fishing, there could be water hotter than 100 degrees waiting for you to take a shower. But cleaning your body is just one use for this handy invention. Hot water makes cleaning the camp dishes a breeze. Good water pressure is invaluable for rinsing down muddy kayaks, boards, bikes, boots or pets. And The Road Shower can be used for drinking water as well. The Road Shower is available in 4-, 7-, or 10-gallon models. It is constructed of powder-coated aluminum with very few extra parts, so it is extremely durable and built to last a lifetime. The unit can be pressurized automatically while filling it with a garden hose, and pressurization can also be achieved with a bike pump or other inflation tools where there is no hose available.

Bluefin A State Record
A
n 877-pound bluefin tuna was caught off Oregon Inlet, N.C. on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17. The North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries recently certified it as a new state record. Retired Army Gen. Scott Chambers of Townsend, Delaware, reeled in the huge fish while fishing aboard Capt. Dennis Endee’s A-Salt Weapon out of Pirates Cove Marina in Manteo, N.C. Chambers battled the fish for 2 ½ hours on 130-pound test line with a Shimano 130 rod and reel. The fish measured nearly 9 ½ feet curved fork length (tracing the contour of the body from the tip of the nose to the fork in the tail), and it had a girth of 79 inches. Regulations dictate that trophy bluefin tuna longer than 73 inches must be released in the Atlantic south of Great Egg Inlet, N.J. after 11:30 p.m. on March 17, 2018. Chambers was hours from having to release his state record catch when it ate a trolled dead bait. Coming in just under the wire, Chambers’ fish crushed the previous recreational state record by 72 pounds. That 805-pound fish was caught in 2011. The all-tackle world record was caught off Nova Scotia in 1979. It weighed 1,496 pounds. Bluefin tuna much larger than this new state record are known to come from North Carolina waters. According to The Outer Banks Voice, a bluefin heavier than 1,000 pounds was caught this winter, but it was sold to a dealer and was not eligible for the record.
