By Capt. Terry Fisher

ast August, I accepted an invitation to join Wayne Hasson and his son, Davis, on a trip to the Jardines de la Reina (Gardens of the Queen) off the southern coast of Cuba. Wayne is the president of Aggressor and Dancer Fleets International, a fleet of live-aboard yachts that operate worldwide. Wayne had contracted to franchise a boat to the Cuban group, Avalon Dive and Fishing Centers. One purpose of the trip was to assess current Avalon Dive operations prior to putting an Aggressor boat in service in Cuban waters. This was an opportunity of a lifetime to experience diving and fly-fishing these virgin waters, which until recently was prohibited to most U. S. citizens. We were traveling under a licensed educational program, Oceans for Youth Foundation. The trip was 10 days and nine nights. The first two days and nights in Havana provided interaction with Cuban youths, their parents and local marine officials so as to learn their perspectives and to share ours on marine conservation and stewardship. Naturally, we found time to enjoy their unique city and culture through food, music and drinks prior to departing to the Port of Jucaro to begin the dive and fishing segment of the trip. On day three, we boarded the Avalon II, a state-of-the-art, 10-cabin, live-a-board diving and fishing vessel. We began the five-hour, 60mile trek to one of the largest marine parks in the Caribbean, the Jardines de la Reina, named by Christopher Columbus to honor Queen Isabel of Spain. My excitement mounted as we boarded, with Wayne’s promise that a world-class fishery would be my home for the next seven days. The diving proved to be world class as well. Davis and I set out at the end of each day to drag lines behind a Zodiac for jacks, permit and other species. While multiple fishing opportunities

Catch all three for a “Slam.” Since I live and guide in southwest Florida, I am blessed with lots of tarpon and permit. Therefore, my target was bonefish! Even though I have fished Little Cayman, Cayman Islands and Bahamas, I’ve never experienced the thrill of catching a bonefish. Catching one on the fly would be awesome. My fishing guide proved to be shadowed knowledgeable as to times, locations and patterns me on his last day. He got the video and pictures to throw. THE ONLY DURABLE HIGH QUALITY ROD WRAP

Russ Lane: Bassmaster Elite Series™ Pro

“Winn overwraps help me as a tournament angler in so many ways. They’re great in all weather conditions. I don’t have to physically squeeze my rod during a cast as hard as I did with cork or EVA. That gives me a better degree of accuracy with less fatigue. Multiple color options also allow me to organize different rod actions and lengths using different colors. I honestly could never use a rod again without my Winn overwrap!”

n the minds of many traditional bass anglers, the subject of fly fishing is limited to topwater fishing with cork-bodied poppers and deer hair bass bugs. The truth of the matter is, wherever and whenever bass can be caught, they can be caught on flies. At first glance, fly fishing seems complicated and difficult, but with a few new skills, minimal equipment and a handful of flies, bass anglers can find a new way to enjoy something that they already love. Fly fishing for bass is as much a state of mind as it is a sport. Fly fishers usually have different standards and expectations. For example, due to the nature of the equipment, smaller fish seem large and larger fish seem huge. While a 15-incher caught on heavy baitcasting equipment might not seem like much, the same fish battled on a 7-weight fly rod is memorable. Certainly big fish are taken on flies, but landing a bass over 7 pounds is a tall order. Fly Lines The fly line is the life-blood of the outfit. Line weights commonly range from 2 to 12, and the line size determines the rod and reel size. A 2-weight outfit would be the choice for the smallest trout streams, using tiny flies. A 12-weight would match up well with large tarpon. For bass and light saltwater, a 7- or 8-weight is perfect. Choose a weight-forward line (WF), and for most of your fishing, a floating line will serve you well. If budget allows, add an intermediate sink-tip line for getting your fly deeper or for fishing in choppy conditions. Another consideration is air/ water temperature Another consideration is air and water temperature. If you fish mostly in warm weather that never gets below the 70s, I strongly recommend a “Tropical” line. The core of the line is stiffer and will keep its integrity in a subtropical climate, whereas a Dacron core becomes limp and more difficult to cast. A standard Dacron core line works well in cooler water.

very important. In bass fishing, rarely does a fish pull the line off the reel and get into the backing. Even a larger bass will never really test your drag. Choose a matched-size large arbor reel with a pleasant “click,” and you are good to go. Leaders Whether you tie them or buy them, the tapered leader is the most fragile connection to the fish. An 8-foot, 15-pound-test leader will work for most of your bass fishing. Tie your own using the following formula with uni-to-uni or surgeons knots: 4 feet of 40-pound test, 1.5 feet of 30-pound test, 1.5 feet of 20-pound test, and 1 foot of 15-pound test. Mono should be used when fishing surface flies, while fluorocarbon is great for getting sinking flies down faster. Flies Assemble your fly box to cover the water column. Cork bodied poppers and deer hair bugs will handle the topwater action and can be tied or purchased with weed guards. Un-weighted shad or bluegill imitations and swimming frog patterns cover the mid depths of 1 to 4 feet, where I catch most of my best fish. The dog days of summer will find me plying the depths in 4 to 8 feet with heavily weighted Clouser minnows and worm flies. My favorite all-around bass fly is the StrawBoss, a versatile bucktail fly that can be tied to mimic a swimming frog, baitfish or crawfish. When fishing topwater, the strike is obvious, but when fishing subsurface, it is important to keep your rod-tip in or near the water. As you strip the fly you will feel resistance and a “strip set” will drive the hook home. Good traditional bass fishers usually transition well into fly fishing. Slow your pace, learn to cast efficiently, and use your bass fishing instincts in a new way. I think you will enjoy it.

Fly Rods A good quality 9-foot, 7- or 8-weight rod will do it. If you tend to throw Joe Mahler is a fly fishing author, illustrator and a leading fly casting larger flies and fish larger, more open waters or heavy cover, go with the instructor from Fort Myers, Fla. Contact Joe to purchase flies or schedule 8-weight outfit. Fly Reels In fly fishing for bass, the reel plays less of a role than it does in saltwater fishing. With quarry like bonefish or tarpon, the drag system is 8

O

I also use a lot of artificial baits including topwater and soft-plastic artificials. Zara Spook topwater plugs are my favorite in a chartreuse/ black, or white/red. The topwater bite for redfish and trout during October can be some of the best of the year. My go-to soft plastic is the Berkley Gulp 3-inch Shrimp in new penny or the Berkley Gulp Mantis Shrimp in new penny with a chartreuse tail. Usually I’ll use a 1/8- or ½-ounce jig head depending on the scenario. Fly fishing is my favorite way to target fish here in the Lowcountry because we are constantly sight fishing throughout the day. What I love most about fly fishing this time of year is the water is a lot cleaner and you can see fish better all the way through changing tides. The redfish are very aggressive in October and do not hesitate to eat the wad of feathers at the end of your fly line. These aggressive fish allow you to make easier presentations because they are constantly looking for food. I’ve had countless days in October when an angler makes the cast and the fish eats the fly before he even has time to strip! My preferred setup is an 8-weight with floating line and about a 9- or 10-foot tapered fluorocarbon leader to keep you safe from oysters and spartina grass. When choosing flies, match the hatch by using lighter natural-colored shrimp flies during low tides and darker colored crab flies during the flood tides. Make sure all your fly patterns have a stout weed guard to keep the fly from hooking oysters and grass. Bay Street Outfitters in Beaufort, S.C. has a giant selection of flies, lines, leaders, rods, reels and everything you need for fly fishing in the Lowcountry. I cannot even begin to explain how excited I am that fall is finally here! Enjoy time on the water in October; I promise you won’t be disappointed.

ctober is by far my favorite month of the year for inshore fishing here in the Lowcountry of Beaufort and Hilton Head, S.C. As the temperature starts to drop and the spartina grass turns from green to brown, it’s Mother Nature’s sign that great fishing is ahead. I was born and raised on the waters of the Lowcountry. One thing I’ve learned over a lifetime of fishing here is that October can be some of the best fishing of year for redfish, speckled sea trout and flounder. What makes October such a good month? Well, there are a number of stars that align during October including dropping air temperature, dropping water temperature, clearer water, and most of all an abundance of shrimp in the water. October is a month when inshore fish start to feel winter coming and gorge on shrimp non-stop, filling up for a long cold winter. With a water temp from 68 to 75 degrees, it allows the fishing to be consistent throughout the entire day because it doesn’t get too hot or too cold. And the air temperature stays between 60 and 80 degrees, which is perfect for an 8-hour day on the water. The wind seems to lay down, and we have a lot more good weather days. One of my favorite styles of fishing is sight fishing, and October can provide some of the best action, whether it’s a school of redfish crushing shrimp on a mud flat or aggressively tailing looking for fiddler crabs on the flood tide. When light tackle fishing, we are targeting a variety of species throughout the day. With the abundance of shrimp, we are mostly using shrimp-style baits unless fishing for bull reds in the deeper water. My go-to tactic in October when using live bait is a Cajun Thunder popping cork rigged with about an 18-inch fluorocarbon leader, Capt. Owen Plair is an Orvis-endorsed guide operating out of depending on water depth, split shot in the middle of the leader to keep the shrimp down, a 2/0 hook, and live shrimp. This setup is deadly Bay Street Outfitters in Beaufort, S.C. See them online at www. along the grass and oyster beds on a falling or rising tide. The sound baystreetoutfitters.com. of the cork mimics a live shrimp popping and will attract redfish, trout and flounder. Allowing the bait to drift within strike zones of the fish For More Inshore Fishing in Hilton Head go to is the key to live bait fishing. Mud minnows also work well in October when fishing rising and falling tides in the marsh. COASTALANGLERFISHING.COM COASTALANGLERMAG.COM • THEANGLERMAG.COM

BLEED TRIM

Seeking out productive locations can be pretty simple. Find a live bottom in the depth I mentioned, and you are going to find fish. A lot of people like to target them this time of the year on the beaches, particularly around jetties and inlets where bait is thick. These areas tend to develop tide lines during tide changes, and fishing the clean side of the water can result in some great catches. I have always preferred to fish schools of bait By Englis Glover along the beach, running and gunning and trolling the outside areas of these schools. Typically, the biggest females hang out on the edges chewing on a buffet of bait. One of the great things about targeting mercury missiles is you can do it from any size boat if you pick your day carefully. It is very important, no matter the boat size, that you have good rod holders. I like to fish a max of five rods with live bait and will fish three or four if it is rough. It does not take a lot of baits in the water to ignite a bite. But a spread of good live baits can produce the best results. Typically the best bait is the most accessible bait. From mullet and bluefish to the popular menhaden, they all work great. The plus to a bigger bait is they are hearty and will last longer on the hook. Having good live bait will increase your success exponentially. In cases when I cannot find live bait, I have great success with cigar minnows and Boston mackerel. These baits troll best with a jig head for a nose hook to keep them from spinning while trolling. I always take the bait and bend and flex it to make sure it looks as lively as possible. I have also added legal-size Spanish mackerel to the spread. They produce some big fish. These also troll better with a jig head for a nose hook, and I try to include two or three stinger hooks in my rig to help eliminate a miss on a short strike. Remember, colder mornings can make bait difficult to find on the surface this time of year, so come prepared with some frozen bait on the boat. ight fishing for permit on the flats is considered by many to be the pinnacle of sport fishing. The first challenge is sighting them—cutting through the glare of the rippled surface waters to pick out dark, camouflaged forms of permit moving quickly and erratically across a mosaic of seagrass, sand and hard bottom. Next, the perfect cast, loaded fast and landing with hula-hoop sized accuracy, might– just might–result in a tight line and an epic fight with one of the most beautiful fish on Earth. Permit support incredible fisheries in many regions of the Caribbean Sea and Western Atlantic Ocean, and yet, even more remarkable is how little

we know about them. There the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico, providing have been no rigorous scientific a wide net for detecting permit and characterizing studies on permit habitat use or their movements. Initial findings from our study suggest permit are creatures of habit when it comes to their habitat. Permit travel to fairly large regions of the flats, some over 14 miles in expanse, but most fish tend to visit the same locations very regularly. However, permit that were tagged on the flats have made long distance migrations to nearshore reefs and shipwrecks, which we think are related to spawning. For example, one permit was detected at a suspected spawning site on an offshore reef more than 42 miles from the flat where it was tagged, and later returned to that home ranges, which is essential same flat. This information will help to identify information for protecting and protect important spawning locations in the their habitats and maintaining future. We have already learned a lot in just the first healthy fisheries for the future. he Spanish galleon Santa Margarita sank off the coast of Palm Beach carrying between $4-million and $7-million in gold and silver bullion. That was in the year of 1595, and the treasure is waiting to be found. I often dream of finding undiscovered riches, of diving down through blue water to a yellow sandy bottom, of seeing the ripples caused by wave action stretching to the edge of visibility. Then lightly dusting the bottom reveals cursed treasure. I imagine the feeling of running my hands through stacks of gleaming gold coins or feeling the weight of blackened bricks of silver. The Santa Margarita is called a ghost wreck for many reasons. First, the Spanish had over a hundred ships by that name. Thus the records and documents can be confusing about which vessel they actually are referring to. There are a lot of salty square miles to search. locations of old-world wrecks, I don’t recommend spending time or money in hunting for booty on a hunch, but instead, working with state archaeology organizations in preserving underwater shipwrecks. Archaeology is important, as it allows us to study the people who came before us to learn about their lifestyle, struggles and dreams. Archaeology allows us to go back in time. The state of Florida has a couple of organizations that seek amateurs and professionals in their quest to preserve our historical sites. One is the Florida Public Archaeology Network (FPAN). Their mission is to promote and facilitate the stewardship, public appreciation, and value of Florida’s archaeological heritage through Regional Centers, partnerships and community engagement. FPAN is a statewide program administered by the University of West Florida. Other organizations such as Heritage Awareness Diving Seminars (HADS) and

Submerged Sites Education and Archaeological Stewardship (SSEAS) offer training for the certified diver on nondisturbance methods and how to use photography, hand-drawn site maps, and recording forms to document our precious resources. Pura Vida Divers encourages divers who enjoy seeing wrecks to help save them for future generations. Off our coast, we regularly dive wrecks that have been sunk intentionally, some by hurricanes, and some by their own doing. Each one has a story to tell. Our October social night will be held Friday, Oct. 21, 2016 starting at 6:15 p.m. with special speaker Della Scott-Ireton, who will tell us about the Florida Underwater Archeological Preserve shipwrecks. For more information on this special night, call Pura Vida Divers at 561-8408750 or visit our website www. puravidadivers.com.

ABACO OFFSHORE fishing forecast October will mark the beginning Capt. Travis with a of the 2016-2017 wahoo season! sampling of what’s to come! PHOTO CREDIT: As the cold fronts start to push Gusto Charters & through south Florida and the Guide Service. Bahamas, the water temperatures will begin to drop, and fishing the drop-off in 180- to 500 feet will be the zone for getting the wahoo action. High speed trolling 12-to-15 knots with the big gear—50weight to 80-weight reels, heavy leads—24-to-48 ounce, and multi colored artificial lures, like Islander, Blackbarts to Bost lures, will do the job. You can also slow down to save some fuel and troll 7-to-9 knots with rigged ballyhoo or split tail mullet under your favorite skirt or trolling lures, still keeping the leads 24to-48 ounce or planers in the spread, will help get the baits down deeper. There can still be the occasional mahi-mahi strike in the mix as well. This time of year you must pay close attention to the forecast, as weather can get bad during cold fronts and as we are just ending the hurricane season. Bottom fishing the reef will still produce snapper and groupers. Chum bags will bring in the yellow tails. Squid is good bait. Vertical jigging in 100-to-200 feet of water with metal or buck tails jigs can also get you on grouper, mutton snapper and some other species. FORECAST BY: Capt. Travis Kelly Gusto Charters & Guide Service Marsh Harbour, Abaco, Bahamas Phone: (242) 477-0261 Email: gustobahamas@gmail.com

What do the ratings mean? POOR day basically means the fish will either steal all your bait or will not even touch your line. FAIR day means that you will catch one or two fish but you will have to work hard to do so. GOOD day means that you will catch enough fish to feel gratified. BEST day means that you will catch something almost every time you cast your line in the water.

Fish Contribute to Their Communities!

By Olivia Patterson Maura

W

hy are fish important? They are a critical food source for human communities around the world, however have you ever thought about what fish do for their own communities? Further research has led us to a better understanding of the roles fish play in coral reef environments. We all know that fish are important members of the food web by being predators of and prey for other fish, but did you know that they are also responsible for helping coral reefs grow? A project by Jacob Allgeier, Abel Valdivia, Courtney Cox and Craig Layman recently published in Nature Communications investigates this interaction and how it can be affected by fishing. In nutrient poor areas, like the clear waters where coral reefs typically grow, the ecosystem relies on nutrient input from animals, like fish. Think of it like a farm fertilizer (nutrients) is required for produce to grow well. Same on a coral reef! However, too much or the wrong kind of nutrients can lead to problems for reefs (think of the potential effects from agricultural runoff where algae may overgrow a reef). Not enough nutrients and the ecosystem can still be put out of whack. Like any other animal, when a fish eats it has to excrete! The authors use the term “fish pee” to describe this excretion. So how on earth do you measure pee in a fluid environment? This involves putting individual fish in a zip lock bag filled with sea water and

measuring the nutrient content of the water before and after a set time period. In this way, Allgeier has been able to catalogue the relative contributions of a number of fish species that live around coral reef habitats. But it’s not just the species of fish that counts, or the number of fish, but the size of individual fish. Larger fish are able to contribute larger amounts of nutrients to their environment. This means that the fish we preferentially catch, because it’s a bigger bang for our buck, are also the most important contributors of nutrients to coral reef environments. So, when we fish out all of the large fish in a population, we are not only affecting their reproductive capacity, we are also making an indirect impact on the health of their habitat. This research has implications for how we continue to manage our fisheries and coral reef habitats and recommends that nutrient cycling become an important part of any future conservation planning. ABACO DIVE FORECAST Where did summer and our The reefs of Abaco visitors go? It seems just yesterday we are an underwater photographer’s dream! were celebrating Memorial Day and PHOTO CREDIT: Marsh Harbour was bustling. It is Dive Abaco! now quiet and Abaco is resting after another busy summer. Thank you to everyone who visited - to both the first time guests and to our repeat visitors. Without you, we would not be doing what we love to do for the past 38 years. Although it is October, you would never know it by the warmer than normal weather, air temperature ranging from 76°F to 88°F, ocean temperature hovering around 84°F and very calm days with excellent visibility and no current. The warmer conditions, unfortunately, have resulted in more than average coral bleaching. Global warming is real! Humidity is down, which is a welcomed relief compared to August and September. Days are getting shorter in length and the sun is lower in the sky. Thus far, it has been an uneventful hurricane season and we hope it remains this way. As the month progresses, slight temperature changes can be expected making the clarity and colors on the reef even more brilliant. As November approaches, the focus will shift from the tropics to points north and the first nor’easter. This change in weather patterns will signal the change in diving seasons from summer to winter. Until then, wetsuits can stay in the closet a little longer. Our guests continue to be amazed at the diversity and abundance of marine life, reef fish and healthy coral. Diving Abaco is an underwater photographer’s dream and our dive sites are suitable for all skill levels. On a typical dive you may see moray eels peeking out from the security of the coral, brightly colored tropical fish scurrying around the reef, turtles eating seagrass or gliding over coral heads, stingrays attempting to hide beneath a layer of sand or curious Caribbean sharks cruising around. The swim-throughs are still filled to capacity with silversides. With October being the ‘off season’ in Abaco, numerous businesses have reduced operating hours and others are currently closed for annual maintenance and to allow their staff time off for vacation. Most will reopen in early to mid.-November. If you are planning to visit this month, we recommend you make reservations in advance to ensure businesses are open and services can be provided. With tourism at a minimum, it’s a good time if you want to feel stranded in paradise. The full moon occurs on Sunday, October 16, at 12:23 a.m. Moon rise is 7:26 p.m. We look forward to seeing you ‘on island’ soon... FORECAST BY: Keith Rogers, DIVE ABACO! bimini INSHORE fishing forecast Photo cREDIT: Bahamas Ministry of Tourism.

October is truly the transitional month between the late summer and early fall weather patterns. It is also one of the top months to visit the flats of Bimini (North and South). There will be an increasing number of “cool fronts” that will begin to make their way through South Florida and the Northern Bahamas with more days bringing a northerly wind. Cooler water means larger fish and smaller schools. October’s cooler temperatures also bring the ability to fish the entire day; air temperatures are moderating and the days a shorter. Shrimp and crab will work well as natural baits. Targeting other species such as permit and tarpon is no problem. There will be plenty! Fishing the areas of moving water, channels and creeks on the incoming tide is a good plan. On calm days you will see the fish tailing on the flats. Nearshore reefs will provide plenty of options such as black and strawberry grouper, triggerfish and yellowtail snapper. he Bahamas is known as one of top destinations in the world to target bonefish, with Andros - the largest of the Bahamian islands - being the most famous of them all for bonefishing. The Bonefish and Tarpon Trust (BTT) has done extensive work studying bonefish and their habitats in South Andros and Mangrove Cay, and recently decided it was time to begin work in North Andros. BTT Bahamas Initiative Manager, Justin Lewis along with Shelley Cant, Director of Science and Policy at the Bahamas National Trust (BNT), and Dan Woodside traveled to North Andros to tag and collect genetic samples from bonefish in the Joulter Cays. Over a two-day period working with local guide Elias Griffin of Lowe

Sound, the team was quickly into large schools of bonefish and was able to find and capture fish at every location they went to. In total the team was able to tag 587 and fin clip 392 bonefish, a great result for such a quick trip. On the last day of the trip, Justin and the rest of the team traveled south to Staniard Creek where the local Bahamas National Trust office is located. Justin gave a presentation to the Navigators, an afterschool program run by BNT targeting students in grades 10-12. Justin spoke to the students about the ecology and biology of bonefish, history of bonefishing in the Bahamas, and their importance to the country and its economy. Andros contains the largest portion of bonefish habitat in the Bahamas, making it particularly important to identify key forage, spawning, and migration pathways to ensure the future of the vast fishery. This coming fall, BTT

GRAND BAHAMA OFFSHORE fishing forecast

GRAND BAHAMA INSHORE fishing forecast

October is the month for bottom meat fish. Before we start seeing the northern cold fronts, enjoy the calm winds and seas. This is the time to anchor up or drift for species in the snapper and grouper families. You will want heavy spinning rods, circle hooks, and lots of squid and chunks of barracuda, which is my favorite. The reason is because with the skin left on the barracuda, the bait is extremely tough so the fish can’t steal your bait easily. Please be diligent to the size limits and quota. Keep your eyes peeled for flocks of birds working schools of migrating fish. Catch ’em up and be safe in those afternoon squalls.

October is one Jose David Bravo on the of my favorite flats of eastern Grand months of the year Bahama with fishing for fishing. Most of the fish are out of the bigger schools and are moving around the flats, channels and reefs. Instead of being in big schools in one area, the fish are all over. And, for the flats fish like bonefish, they have moved higher up on the flats, where you can see them tailing. These are fun time to go fish permit, bonefish, barracuda, jacks, snappers and many more—all on the move. It is very hard to be disappointed fishing the inshore in Grand Bahama in October. Plan that trip now!

NASSAU OFFSHORE FISHING FORECAST As the offshore fishing slowed down as expected, we are catching a few of the offshore species like mahi and wahoo, being caught on the ledge as we troll for the typical barracuda to please our guests Lol. The reef fishing is another good option for light tackle action as you can catch an abundance of bottom dwellers, including snapper, grouper and more. October could be very interesting if this trend with action on the ledge continues. Hopefully the ledge action is heating up earlier, rather than the action just coming from a few fish passing through. Regardless, we are ready for them. You never know what’s out there unless you give a try. Tight lines everyone!

BAHAMAS SURF REPORT Seems like I was just writing about suffering through the dog days of summer and now here we are, autumn in the Bahamas. October we expect welcomed drops in air temperature and water temperature. Still not cold enough, unless you have zero body fat, to break out your wetsuit top. North swells are the order of the day and the occasional late-season tropical storm will get into the mix most Octobers. What it means is lots of swell arriving in our Commonwealth and known spots like Abaco’s Elbow Cay, Eleuthera and even Rum Cay and Nassau should come alive; the latter two on bigger, north swells. Like many places on the continent’s east coast, it’s those darn onshore winds that plague the surf this month. It’s hard to find anywhere semi-clean when a real nor’easter is blowing, but keep your board nearby because a shift to the east or west will mean some spots will begin working. As of the mid-September press time it has been just an average month at best. A few big swells, a couple of good, but not classic days and quite a few smaller days made for a nice end to the summer doldrums. The Who said there ain’t no cure to the summertime blues, but I bet a really good October in the islands would just about do it. Until next time enjoy our wild Bahamas. have been visiting family in the U.S. recently and have been overwhelmed with the amount of plastic we use in our daily lives. Living on a tiny island, we don’t have endless, double plastic wrapped for our convenience, items, as they are just not available. On a recent trip to the grocery store, I was luxuriating in my options, but realized that more than half the items I wanted, were in plastic. I took a minute to assess the situation and ask myself if I really needed them and if they really needed to be in plastic. In Bimini, I am in the habit of buying things in glass jars and always reusing them for something, Jars are essentially the original Tupperware and do just fine for storing things.

four items in a bag. I asked her to take them out, as I didn’t need a bag and then I got the stare. The look of, “how can you get items without a bag?” I paid, collected my items in my hands and walked to the car. I might have looked silly, but I had forgotten my canvas bag and refused to use a plastic one. When I walk the beach in Bimini, it is always littered with an array of plastic items from bottles, to straws to toys. This is not someone else’s problem; it’s ours. I am not perfect, but here are the things I am working on to reduce my own plastic problem and hope other people might try. 1. Always have reusable bags in the car or even carry one in your purse. Remember to bring these even if it is not a grocery store. 2. Ask for no straw if you order a drink at a restaurant. 3. Look for items in jars rather than plastic. 4. Make your own sauces or dressings. This means you can reuse a container and not keep buying more. 5. Do a beach cleanup. As little as two minutes can make a difference. 6. Buy products made from recycled plastic or nylon. These include swimsuits, sunglasses, jewelry or even skateboards!

I gathered my items and headed to the check out. I watched as the women in front of me placed pudding and applesauce on the till, along with several types of fruit, all in their own baggies—plastic everywhere. Then the two bottles of wine she had were each individually wrapped in paper bags and then double bagged for their protection! On top of all her other groceries, she had two bottles of wine in two paper and four plastic bags. How is that necessary? How are stores allowing this? How as consumers are we accepting this? When my turn came, I placed my single, un-bagged fruit and other items on the belt. As the cashier rung me up she started placing my

EXUMA OFFSHORE FISHING forecast October will bring the cooling waters to our area and thus should bring the wahoo that I’ve been waiting for with baited breath! Ha ha! Lines have been changed, rod rollers greased, new lures rigged, all fueled up and ready to go! The sound of the first screaming reels is what I live for. The first run of wahoo are usually in the 15- to 30-pound fish range and this is a great time to lighten up to the 30-pound class rods, or even lighter, for a little more action. Going to try running some high speed lures this year in the 9 to 11 knot range. The fast action on the bullet headed style and a couple wobbler types will be what we’re going to run. The cooler wares should also perk up the action on the reefs as well. Start looking in 30 to 50 feet and move a little deeper if action is slow. See you out there or give us a call. We are ready! LONG ISLAND (BAHAMAS) OFFSHORE forecast October brings the change of seasons from summer into the wahoo winter. It is still a quiet month for the pelagics, although they do start making an appearance. When the timing is right, three or four days before a full moon, you are likely to get a few wahoo and mahi. The 16th is the opening of stone crab season in the Bahamas and Long island offers colossal size crabs. Simply venture out into the commercial banks on the southwest side of the island and check in small reefs and ledges. They can also be purchased from local fishermen. The spearfishing continues be productive just a few miles off shore, with a large variety of fish to choose from. Hogfish tend to spawn and congregate on certain areas and you are likely to get a dozen at a time on each reef. These fish make an excellent ceviche and it’s always enjoyable to bring a ready mix bowl with you on the boat to then simply add the catch of the day to it and enjoy with friends and family.

The water temperature in October continues to be 82°F to 85°F, wet suits optional. October is the transition month between the summer and winter weather pattern, with the winds being more north-northeast and typically light, humidity is lower compared to summer. This is a good month for underwater photography, visibility is typically 100-plus feet, and winds are usually light and variable creating excellent diving conditions. The large pelagic species start to move back in as the water temperature drops especially out on the wall, like the large spotted eagle rays. Remember when trying to photograph these majestic creatures once you get within a reasonable distance, turn and swim parallel so the animal does not get the feeling you are going to attack. Safety tip for October: Dehydration reduces the quantity of blood available for gas exchange, slowing gas removal from the body increasing the chances of Decompression Sickness (“DCS”). The metabolism of alcohol uses a great deal of water, a diver with a hangover is likely to be partially dehydrated, limit alcohol consumption the night before diving to reduce the chances of DCS. Fun tip for October: Since we trained the sharks to recognize lion fish as food, they have depleted most of the lion fish on South Eleuthera, on any dives see who can find a lionfish. Diver tip for October: Nervous about sharks? Allow us to teach you to love sharks through our shark interaction – shark behavior class and dives, you will enjoy your diving so much more thereafter. lice Town, Bimini—The historic Bimini Big Game Club Resort and Marina continues its tradition of hosting top-notch fishing tournaments with the Wahoo Smackdown VIII, slated for Nov. 10-13. This year the authentic Bahamian offshore tournament is led by longtime Bimini Big Game Club dockmaster Capt. Robbie Smith, who has greeted thousands of boaters and anglers at the docks over the last 28 years. Capt. Smith, a 2015 Bahamian Icon Awards finalist, is certified by the International Game Fish Association (IGFA) as an official weigh master. Big game tournaments and Bimini are synonymous said Capt. Smith. The International Annual Bacardi Rum Billfish Tournament originally had its roots in Bimini. Over the years, Bimini was a Mecca for big game anglers and was host site to numerous fishing competitions including the Frankie Brown, The Hemingway, and the famous Cat Cay tuna tournaments. The Big Game Club opened for business in 1947. Owner Neville Stewart saw the promise and allure of fishing and personally developed

and encouraged tournaments. He sold his interest to Bacardi, which over 30 years grew the tradition with many memorable tournaments helping to build Bimini’s title as “Sportfishing Capital of the World.” The current owners, the Southern California-based Hankey Group— put the iconic fishing resort back in play in 2010 and are completing a multi-million-dollar renovation, that includes numerous capital improvements to the rooms, restaurant and lounge, landscaping, new pool and a renovated 75 slip marina, including docks and seawall. “Bimini’s great fishing has attracted anglers from around the world for decades,” said Capt. Smith. “And chasing wahoo in November has become a tradition—one full of surprises and one that doesn’t disappoint the sports fishermen who relish the hunt of this feisty and tasty speedster.” Wahoo Smackdown VIII will kick off November 10 in the Hemingway Lounge with a captain’s meeting and will conclude on Nov. 12 with an awards gala, poolside. Registration fee is $1,500 per boat (includes four anglers, tournament shirts and entry to social events). Additional anglers over four are $250 each. Extra social tickets are $150 each. Total payout is $25,000 with a 25-boat minimum. Weekday room rates will be offered for the weekend. Registration fee is 100 percent refundable if the tournament is canceled due to weather. Current Wahoo Smackdown sponsors include artist David Dunleavy, Bahamian Brewery and Beverage (Sands), Bost Lures, Faro Blanco Resort and Yacht Club, Flanigan’s Seafood Bar and Grill, Sysco, and Tito’s Vodka. The registration deadline for Wahoo Smackdown VIII is Oct. 27. To register, visit www.biggameclubbimini.com. For sponsorships, contact Beth Watson at BWatson@biggameclubbimini.com.

Fishing gear that is in state waters, allowing anglers to possess and land appropriately stowed means terminal tackle, such as filleted dolphin, wahoo and reef fish that were caught in hooks, leaders, sinkers, etc., must be disconnected and stowed separately from the rod and reel. PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT DIVERSIFIED GEAR CHUM SINK Chumming efforts intended to rally fish behind your boat often end up pulling them out of range. Thankfully, Diversified Gear has introduced an innovative new accessory called the Chum Sink that puts your chum where it needs to be—right under your boat. Compact and convenient, yet durable and dependable, this patent-pending product is manufactured in the USA from marine grade materials. When deployed from the stern, chum sinks diagonally with natural current movement and often overshoots the bottom structure anglers target. Add some wind, waves and stronger flow and your chum may end up falling well beyond your intended deployment zone. The Chum Sink solves this issue by attaching your chum block to the anchor rope. This strategic move means your chum line originates upcurrent of your boat, so the chum disperses into the water column as it passes under your position. The Chum Sink’s standard configuration comprises 50 feet of para cord, a hitch pin and two clips and retails for $64. A package with 100 feet of para cord retails for $69. Designed to sink the common 7-pound chum block, the Chum Sink is compatible with any chum bag or cage and fully adjustable without moving the anchor rope.

midst the wide variety of salt and freshwater fish species, resident and non-resident anglers have an incredible opportunity to target a broad range of fish all on fly tackle. Now, what and what not to bring for a day of fly fishing in the sunshine state can be talked about for hours. I feel there are several flies the majority of anglers will agree work just about anywhere and are a great place to start when you begin your fly fishing journey in Florida. If freshwater will be your focus, then various styles of topwater poppers are a must have for the fly angler. Dahlberg Divers, mouse flies, deer-hair poppers and foam poppers are all flies an angler should be ready to utilize. Whether your target species is largemouth, peacock bass or bullseye snakehead, these flies will always provide you with an unforgettable topwater experience. If you have young children or are new to fly fishing, then Florida’s myriad panfish offer a fantastic gateway into the world of fly fishing. Native species of shellcrackers and crappie along with nonnative species such as Mayan cichlid and tilapia are all worthy opponents on light tackle for any fly angler. Flies that have worked particularly well for me when targeting these species are Woolly Buggers and small foam poppers. For those looking to test wits out on the salt for inshore fly fishing, South Florida will not disappoint.

Snook, redfish and tarpon are readily caught on various types of streamer patterns like Clouser Minnows, Deceivers and Low Fat Minnows, which also are used quite effectively when targeting largemouth and peacock bass. Small shrimp and glass minnow imitations are deadly flies to utilize if you will be fishing up and around dock lights. In the Florida Keys at certain times of the year, a worm known as the Palolo worm hatches from coral rocks and local tarpon begin to feast upon them. For the fly angler, this presents a great opportunity to hook into a big tarpon while using a simple worm-imitating fly! Landing fish on fly tackle is one of the most challenging things an angler can do. Mastering long accurate casts, proper hook setting and proper fly presentations all add to the challenge. But there’s a rewarding feeling of bring in a fish on a fly rod. Florida gives fly anglers a unique opportunity in the sense that you can catch so many different types of fish in a multitude of different types of ecosystems. If you truly want to become a well-rounded fly angler, Florida is certainly one of the best places to do so. The flies I’ve listed are all fly patterns that have helped me land fish in Florida, and are my suggestion to you if you’ve never gone fly fishing before. However, try different types of flies in your waters and gain insight into what presentations generate the best results for you.

hile most anglers are now thinking about sitting in tree stands and grooming food plots, fishing will soon take a turn for the better. October signals the cooling of water temps with days getting shorter and the sun not burning as bad as it does during the dog days. We think the most important factor to the fall fishing fling is the day’s are growing shorter and fish feel this. Shorter days with cooling water temps sets up feeding frenzies that could last most of the day. Knowing where to look for each species in the summer is the challenge. But in the fall, trout and redfish are on the move, trying to stay in the most comfortable water columns to feed, which usually mean on top of the flats where we love to catch ’em. One of our favorite lures for this time of year is the very reliable Johnson Silver Minnow, either gold or silver in ½- or ¾-ounce to mimick the baitfish on the flats. To accurately cast to our targets, we prefer a 7-foot medium-action spinning rod with a size 2500 PENN Clash 2500 spinning reel. We load this up with 10-pound Berkley Fireline. One important factor to consider is leader size. The water should be getting super clear by now, so we like to use the lightest leader possible. We prefer to start with 20-pound Trilene 100% Fluorocarbon, but we’re not afraid to drop down to 15-pound test if the fish are spooky. Just adjust the drag and let it do the work. We retrieve the Silver Minnow quickly but deliberately over the grass beds and let drop it a bit lower in the water column in those sand depressions. We can cover a lot of water quickly, and when a group of reds or trout is located, nothing works quite like a white or new penny Gulp! Shrimp or Jerkshad on a 1/4-ounce jighead. Snook, on the other hand, will be making their way toward the canals and the many rivers. Snook need to stay warm in the fall and winter. But that’s fine too, because knowing where to find them is the key to catching. For now, these guys will be coming and going among the trout and reds

his hot, dry Southern summer has made for deplorable trout fishing. Tailwater streams are about the only places where an angler can still catch a few trout. Reports from the Watauga in eastern Tennessee are good. Georgia’s Chattahoochee River is fishing OK at the moment. Georgia’s Toccoa and Tennessee’s Clinch and South Holston rivers are producing, but the fishing has been less than average. The Hiwassee River Tailwater in Tennessee is reportedly too warm to fish, even on high water, which is usual this time of year since the TVA decided to manage stream flows for the benefit of recreational use on the lakes. Mountain streams around the region are low and warm, and the fish are

lethargic and reluctant to feed. Dukes Creek, the public trophymanaged fishery at Georgia’s Smithgall Woods, is open. I’ve received a few reports that the water is exceptionally low and the fish even spookier than normal, but they can be caught with stealth and precision. The only mountain streams reporting decent fishing are Noontootla Creek in Georgia and a few of the high-altitude creeks in the Smoky Mountains National Park. But don’t despair; some rain and cool nights will get us out of these doldrums soon. What I look for this month is the beginning of the brown trout spawning urge. Browns start to feed more preparing for the spawn and become more aggressive. Streamer fishing will become very productive and may produce your best fish of the year. Colorful dry attractor patterns like Royal Wulffs and Sparkle Stimulators will get showy rises on freestone streams. Good BWO hatches are just around the corner on tailwater streams. One of my most memorable trout fishing experiences occurred on the Hiwassee River in October back in the 1980s. A few Isonychias began hatching one afternoon while I was wading below the Stairsteps. Anytime these big duns start to emerge, I look for big fish. In a smooth run near the bank, I spotted the noses of two large fish sipping duns off the surface. On successive casts I caught a 20-inch male brown with a huge kype and a 23-inch female, both brilliant in spawning colors. I’m not an advocate of fishing for spawning fish after they are on their reds, but during their preparation they are fair game. In October, delayed harvest season in Tennessee and North Carolina will start. Georgia begins early November. The Tellico River in eastern Tennessee is a beautiful stream and perfect for fly fishing. The Nantahala and Tuckasegee rivers in North Carolina are also great delayed harvest streams. In Georgia, I’d plan to fish the Toccoa and the Chattooga rivers. And though not delayed harvest streams, the Raven’s Fork and the Oconaluftee River in Cherokee, North Carolina are fantastic fall fishing streams. Just because trout fishing is difficult at the moment, don’t put your gear away just yet. Take some time off and be ready to fish this fall. It’s the most beautiful time of the year to be on the stream. Ronnie Hall provides reports from The Fish Hawk in Atlanta. Check them out at www.thefishhawk.com.

FLY FISHING

BECOME A BETTER FLY ANGLER FOR BONES AND TARPON

I

t might seem trite, but the old saying “practice makes perfect” is perfect advice to the fly fisher about to make a first trip in search of bonefish. Swift and precise execution is extremely important for successfully sight casting to this species. A little, or a lot, of practice can help the angler perform well in that critical moment when it is time to present the fly. Perfect your cast into the wind. At most locations where the bonefish is found, heavy and strong winds are the rule not the exception. Accuracy and quickness when casting are more important than distance. A 50-foot cast will cover most situations, but if the fly lands a tad short or long, or if you are slow-at-the-switch in making the cast, a skittish bonefish will leave you talking to yourself. It’s important that you limit false casts to three or fewer. And keep your rod’s angle as low as possible. A rod held high like a flag pole will alarm this easily frightened game fish. You can practice these moves on your backyard lawn or at a local park. Body positioning is also important. Relax, keeping a slight bend in your knees. If you are a right-handed caster, position your left foot forward, your right foot positioned slightly back from your left foot. If you played baseball as a kid, this should resemble the closed stance you took in the batter’s box. Practice anticipating where the bonefish are swimming. Create mental fishing situations. Visualize bonefish swimming from left to right and from right to left. See the bonefish swimming directly at you as well as swimming away. Imagine you are on the flats and casting to a bonefish. Try to place the fly 20 feet beyond the direction the fish is

mouse. Move the mouse too quickly and the cat will lose interest. Move it too slowly and it will not chase. Find the right speed and the cat will go for the mouse. In the same way, the right speed will entice a tarpon to attack the fly. But be advised: strip it too fast and you are guaranteed to spook the fish. Once a tarpon locks onto the fly, speed up the retrieve. Don’t stop the fly, keep it moving. Once the tarpon commits, he is likely to take the fly. Give a good tug, or maybe a few, when you strip strike because the tarpon’s mouth is full of hard plates that make a good hook set imperative. Then hold on for the fight of your life!

headed. Also, pretend the fish changes directions, in which case you need to pick up the line and cast again. Perhaps all this business practicing with your imagination seems infantile. However, in rehearsing and mentally cataloging the casts and moves you will be required to know, your chances for success will be improved. Feeding a Fly to a Tarpon To watch a tarpon eat the fly and take off, planing, jumping, twisting and often appearing to head in opposite directions at the same time is an exhilarating experience. To witness this astonishing event, you will need to master the art of proper and effective fly presentation. First, when a tarpon approaches from left to right or right to left, never make the mistake of casting behind the fish. Always try place the fly 10 to 20 feet beyond and 20 feet ahead of the fish at about a 90-dgree angle. Allow the tarpon to swim to the fly, making certain not to move the fly until the fish has closed in. Then, once the fly is positioned practically nose-to-nose with the fish, begin a slow-long stripping retrieve; tease the fish. Think of it as if you were teasing a cat with a toy

TIPS FROM A PRO

FRESHWATER FISHING IN THE RAIN

BRANDON LESTER

A

s summer winds down and the overnight temperatures fall, some of the most productive lake features for bass are bridges. Bridges act as natural funnels or pinch-points often leading back into creeks. Baitfish congregate in creeks during fall, and they often hang around bridges on their way. Big bass will be close behind. These bass will stay as long as shad are there, and they are usually pretty willing to bite if you know how to approach them. I use a three-step approach for fishing bridges in the fall. My three favorite baits are a swimbait, a spoon and a shaky head worm. When fish are suspended around a bridge and I can see them on my Raymarine electronics, my first choice is always a hollow-body

typically aren’t actively feeding, and there’s something about a spoon falling that makes them think it’s an easy meal. It’s something they don’t see a lot, and they bite it out of instinct because it looks like a big dying shad. My spoon setup is an MHXMB903 rod that’s 7’6” long and has medium-heavy action. A longer rod when casting a spoon allows for more distance as well as the ability to rip the spoon up to let it fall again. For line, I use 20-pound Vicious fluorocarbon. My final choice for fishing bridges is the shaky head worm. Fish on bridges will have inactive periods throughout the day when they don’t want to bite. That’s when I reach for the shaky

swimbait. Depending on depth, I usually use a ½- to ¾-ounce Mustad bullet-head jighead with a 5 ½-inch Strike King Shadalicious swimbait. I throw this on a MHXMB873 rod. This rod is 7’3” medium-heavy action, and I use 15-pound Vicious fluorocarbon line. I try to determine depth I am seeing most of the fish on my graph and count the bait down to reel it right through them. The swimbait will sink about 2 feet per second, so a seven to eight count will get the bait down to about 14 or 15 feet. That is usually the danger zone in the Southeast. I like to cast from different angles, as there will always be one angle that fires them up the best. My second choice in the fall around bridges is a big flutter spoon. My favorite spoon is the Strike King Sexy Spoon in the 5 1/2-inch size. I throw the spoon a lot when I find fish suspended around bridge columns. These fish

head on 6- to 8-pound Vicious fluorocarbon. There are several great shaky heads, just make sure you get one that features a sticky-sharp Mustad hook. I use a Zoom Trick Worm most of the time, usually in green pumpkin. My shaky head rod is a MHXHM-DS822. This rod is 6’10” and is balanced perfectly for finesse fishing. I fish the shaky head on the rip-rap bridge corners and around the columns after I’ve fished them with the other two baits. There is a misconception that shaky heads won’t catch big fish. It’s not true. Shaky heads are an absolute staple in my arsenal on the Elite Series. I hope these techniques help you catch more fish. FISH & FISHING

IN THE RED ZONE MARK SOSIN

I

t happens more often than most anglers think. You hook an oversized fish in deep water and struggle with the rod tip almost touching the water to drag that critter to the surface. For a while, it’s a standoff in which you gain a foot or two of line and the fish takes it back, plus a few more feet of line. After a physically taxing battle, you begin to see your adversary through the murkiness of the water. Capt. David Doll, a seasoned skipper, refers to this stage of the fight as the fish’s entry into the Red Zone. Picture another scenario where a husky denizen inhales your bait or lure near the surface and streaks for some distant sanctuary. Line peels off the reel with incredible speed. If you’re aboard a boat, you might actually have to chase the fish just to regain line. Eventually, the situation begins to turn in your favor, and your trophy is within 50 feet or so of the boat. It has entered the Red Zone. Capt. Bouncer Smith points out that it’s natural to be excited when you hook a good fish and are close to landing it. However, he cautions, you cannot lose your concentration and focus. Anticipation helps. Almost every fish makes at least one final attempt at freedom once it sees the boat or senses it is being dragged into the shallows of the surf or the shore. This sudden surge is either directly away from the rod’s pressure at burst speed or the fish will crash dive toward the sanctuary of the bottom. In either case, the line must absorb this impact and try to dissipate it over a shorter length.

A ng lers instinctively feel the need to pull back on the rod and clamp down on the reel drag at this moment to prevent the fish from moving away. That usually results in a lengthy tale about the one that broke the line so close to the boat. You can counter this escape tactic easily if you anticipate it and know it is about to happen. When you see or sense this surge, drop the rod tip and point it right at the spot where the line enters the water. Take your hand off the reel, allowing only the pre-set drag to operate. By pointing the rod at the fish, you reduce the drag to the minimum amount. Once your quarry has settled down, simply resume the battle. Put time on your side. It might make sense to land a fish quickly, particularly if you plan to release it, but take the luxury of a few extra minutes when that fish is in the Red Zone. You might have to work your catch back to the boat several times until the precise moment for landing arrives. If you hurry this last stage, the battle could end abruptly. Landing fish successfully necks down to concentration, anticipation and quick reaction. Victory must be celebrated after it occurs and not before. ndros, the largest of the Bahamian Islands, is a marvel, with stunning blue holes, turquoise waters, unique wildlife and of course large land crabs. Its people are highly patriotic and passionate, they are accommodating and friendly, the island’s geography is highly diverse and its flats are unparalleled. Andros is know as the “bonefishing capital of the world,” and for good reason. Flats are extensive, fish are large and diversity great. In short, Andros is an anglers’ paradise and a fly anglers heaven. I recently spent more than a month on Andros,

travelling from the south tip all the way north to the Joulters, exploring, documenting and interviewing guides for research in conjunction with Bonefish and Tarpon Trust, The College of the Bahamas and The Bahamas Fly Fishing Industry Association. South Andros is a tropical paradise with several great lodges including: Bair’s Lodge, Tiamo, Deep Creek Lodge, Mars Bay and Pleasant Bay. In South Andros, there are literally thousands 24

of miles of shorelines where bonefish, permit, tarpon and a host of other saltwater species live. The sheer magnitude of flats available is overwhelming, and although there are many doit-yourself opportunities in South Andros, it is best to hire local guides whose knowledge is tuned to the daily, monthly and seasonal movements of bonefish. Indeed, bonefishing is the heart and soul of Andros, the guides rely on this, and consequently they are highly knowledgeable. If you want the best guides, you need to support them. Flats on the east side of South Andros are usually narrow, truncated by the Tongue of the Ocean, an ocean trench that drops deeper than 6,000 feet. This trench extends the length of Andros, providing ready access to pelagic species and world-class diving and snorkeling. For flats anglers, this proximity to deep water means water temperatures are generally more moderated (cooler in the summer, warmer in the winter) and access to deeper water often provides comfort for fish, hence the east coast tends to be where larger fish prevail. Flats vary widely from hard sandy substrates to sharp coral, and anglers need wading boots in most places. Standard bonefish flies work well in South Andros, but do not be afraid to use larger versions, 1s, 2s and even 1/0s or larger. Fly colors should match the bottom color, and anglers are advised to seek moving water for best results. Creeks and cuts channel food and oxygen-rich water, which concentrates fish. I stayed at Bair’s Lodge while in South Andros. Bair’s widely acknowledges the importance of scientific research, historical documentation and conservation. They offer the finest accommodations, high quality service and outstanding cuisine prepared by Bahamian chef

Valentio, a master artisan of all things food. Guides at Bair’s are resident locals, many of whom learned from their fathers who angled for bonefish as a form of subsistence in days gone by. Bonefishing has become a family tradition and an intergenerational pursuit. South Andros, although considered “Andros,” is separated from central Andros/Mangrove Cay and North Andros by water the locals call South Bight. A free-of-charge ferry runs between South Andros and Mangrove Cay, but I took the Tiamo water taxi between the two islands as I spent time at Tiamo Resort meeting some of their guides. Tiamo is an exclusive “eco” resort where tourists can try their hand at some bonefishing during their stay. I thoroughly enjoyed my time on South Andros. I look forward to returning some day. If you have not already been to South Andros, I highly encourage you to go! For more information on my research, please visit, http://tomkarrow.wixsite.com/bahamasguide-tek. H Idaho Develops Genetic Weapon Against Invasives By Roger Phillips, Idaho Fish and Game

atcheries have long been used to replenish and restore fish populations, but can they also be used to reduce or eradicate them? Idaho Fish and Game researchers are studying whether using traditional hatchery technology in a nontraditional way can eliminate unwanted fish populations in the wild. If successful, it is a tool that might be used worldwide to combat the spread of invasive fish species. Fish and Game researchers and hatchery staff are collaborating on a project using 50-year-old technology to develop a monosex fish population whose offspring can only produce males. These males have two YY chromosomes (YY) rather than the usual XY arrangement. Stocking YY-male hatchery fish into a body of water with an undesired fish population could change the sex ratio to all males within a few generations, and the unwanted fish population would eventually fail to reproduce and therefore die off. Once accomplished, Fish and Game would stop stocking those fish and fisheries managers would then restock that body of water with a more desirable fish species. Brook trout were selected for the first YY project because they are short lived and quick to sexually mature, which enables researchers to rapidly produce the hatchery broodstock and test the technique in a natural environment. Brook trout are also good candidates because they are nonnative in many Idaho waters, frequently overpopulate and stunt in both lakes and streams, which means fish are too small to be of interest for most anglers. The YY technique begins in a hatchery, where young brook trout are exposed to low-doses of a naturally occurring female hormone, estradiol, which has no effect on female fish, but causes male fish to produce eggs when they mature. The egg-producing males are crossed with standard males, which produce about 25 percent YY-male offspring. Those offspring are used to produce another generation that will theoretically produce exclusively male offspring when bred with any other brook trout. Brook trout produced in the program for stocking in the wild are not exposed to any hormones and appear like all other brook trout, but they carry two male chromosomes instead of one. While it sounds complex, it’s a fairly simple method of using hormones to affect gender in a segment of the population, then selectively breeding them to get an entire population to produce one gender. It’s routinely done in commercial aquaculture hatcheries to raise identical-looking food fish, increase growth rates, and control reproduction. If the program with brook trout proves successful, the “YY male” method could eradicate or limit other undesirable fish species in select waters, perhaps even large bodies of water with carp infestations, or other unwanted fish that limit game fish populations and harm habitat. Fish and Game has long used fish toxicants to eradicate unwanted fish from entire bodies of water, but toxicants are typically limited to smaller bodies of water, such as ponds, small lakes and reservoirs or small streams. Netting, trapping, and other fish removal methods also rid waters of unwanted fish, but those efforts are rarely a long-term solution because a few fish usually escape and spawn successfully. All those methods are time consuming, labor intensive, and often have to be repeated years later when unwanted fish populations rebuild. Fish and Game officials hope the YY-male approach will be a costeffective technique to control undesirable fish populations. Gary Byrne, the Fish Production Manger overseeing the hatchery portion of Idaho’s YY brook trout program, said it only took four years to develop the YY brook trout broodstock. Head Fisheries Researcher Dan Schill, who led the team conducting the research project, said they are encouraged by the low cost of broodstock development, and they hope the technique will curb brook trout populations in waters where it’s being tested. “The proof will be in the pudding over the next few years when our research staff obtain results confirming whether stocked YY fish successfully spawn in the wild and are ultimately effective in reducing the percentage of wild female brook trout in test waters,” Schill said. Stocking trials of YY brook trout in four Idaho streams began in 2014, and the first results are encouraging. A marked YY Male was observed actively spawning in October with a wild female, and testing done on wild fry in study streams in 2015 conclusively showed that some YY males successfully spawned. Of equal note, all progeny of stocked YY fish found were XY males, exactly as predicted and as investigators hoped. Fish and Game officials presented their findings at the August 2016 American Fisheries Society (AFS) national meeting in Kansas City, which has generated excitement in the fisheries science community. There, the AFS announced Fish and Game’s YY Male Brook Trout Research Program won the 2016 Sport Fish Restoration Outstanding Project award in the category of Research and Surveys. The awards highlight the importance and effectiveness of the sport fish restoration program and recognize excellence in fisheries management, research and education.

ROBOTIC LIONFISH HUNTERS

A

non-profit company called Robots in the Service of the Environment is throwing its hat into the ring to battle lionfish with a robot designed to suck up the highly invasive species like a vacuum cleaner. Lionfish, which lack predaPBS Photo tors in our oceans, have exploded in numbers and litter reefs of the southern Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico. They outcompete and even eat the young of important recreational species and have done a number on reef ecosystems. Humans armed with spearguns have been the only limiting factor to their spread to this point. PBS reports that Robots in the Service of the Environment is working on several designs for robots that could kill mass numbers of lionfish. The eventual goal of the project, which was dreamed up in the fall of 2015 by Colin Angle, the CEO for iRobot and the maker of the Roomba robotic vacuum, is to design a robot that could hunt lionfish without a pilot. Currently there are several designs. One spears fish like a human would. Another electrocutes them to stun them before sucking them up into a storage chamber to be kept for food. Both require a human pilot. Currently prototypes are being tested in Bermuda. A benefit of robotic lionfish hunters is they could harvest fish in depths unsafe for humans. But there are problems left to be solved. An un-piloted robot would need to be able to accurately identify its target species. Also, due to the size of the lionfish problem, it would take thousands of robots operating independently to eradicate the scourge. That means the robots would need to be inexpensive and easy to make.

gainst threatening gray skies, a cloud of birds whirls and dives on baitfish herded to the shallows and disoriented. From below, big fish slash through the bait, feeding up for a long journey and the cold winter ahead. A third predator approaches from shore. Only this one is not gorging on menhaden, mackerel or herring. Balanced on jetty rocks or waist deep in the foaming surf, the angler casts as far as he can to reach the action. This is the fall striped bass run on the east coast. It’s the most intense surf fishing there is.

44.00 value

$

In September, Atlantic waters begin to cool. Enormous schools of baitfish flood out of the inlets and bays to be intercepted by pods of ravenous striped bass. The bass are putting on fat to carry them through the winter. They are running south along the coast toward their wintering grounds and eating everything they encounter along the way. From Maine to the Outer Banks of North Carolina, anglers eagerly await the arrival of striped bass in their waters. Some may chase the action in a boat, but this is a time when the surfmen can have it just as good. Whether sinking chunk bait beyond the breakers or casting a plug into a melee of surface-feeding schoolies, this is what it’s all about. Braving the cold fronts and high winds as fall storms sweep over the coast is part of the fun. Plenty of 20-plus-pound fish are caught from shore, and 50-, 60-, even 70-pound fish are a possibility. The run begins in September with action kicking off in Maine. Surfmen can be seen cruising the coast on U.S. Route 1 and pulled out at lookouts to watch for a blitz. By October and early November, the fish will have made it to outer Cape Cod. Night fishing the 47-mile National Seashore can sometimes be spectacular. As the season progresses, the rocky shores of Rhode Island become crowded with fish and anglers at places like Beavertail Point, where ample access, rock structure and a abrupt depth changes intersect. And on the subject of crowds, Montauk, New York, on the tip off Long Island, is one of the most publicized surf hot spots for good reason. Be warned: It gets competitive, and the regulars are not friendly. Into December, the jetties and beaches of the Jersey Shore and Sandy Hook should be producing consistent action. And down in Virginia, public piers and beaches around Virginia Beach see the northern fish as well as the migration out of Chesapeake Bay. The terminus for most of these migrating striped bass is Cape Hatteras, N.C., which is also the last stop for anglers looking for one last gasp. In late fall and winter, striped bass will be feeding up before the bite shuts down until spring. Drifting eels in the inlets of the Outer Banks from a boat is the most productive tactic, but surf anglers can get in on the action when bunker get pushed up on the shore.

PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT ADVENTURE MEDICAL KITS If you’re like most anglers, there’s a first-aid kit of some type somewhere on the boat. Chances are all the bandages have been used up, and the medical tape might still be holding the head on the dip net you broke last September. If a medical emergency were to occur on your boat, you’d be in serious trouble. Fishing is a pastime where hooks and lead are constantly flying around at eye level. Close contact with toothy critters is the goal. Wet decks lead to slip-and-falls, hypothermia is a threat, and there’s no counting the dangerous situations an angler willingly puts himself into. You’re not fishing hard enough if you haven’t suffered some sort of injury on the water. Think about it before you head out unprepared. If nothing else, a well-stocked first-aid kit could save you from having to abandon biting fish the next time a minor mishap occurs. Adventure Medical Kits has put a lot of thought into what a boater might need. With an array of medications, bandages, dressings and emergency gear, these kits are constructed to treat common on-the-water injuries. They are also designed to stand up to the marine environment. Thanks to the Adventure Medical Kit Easy Care organization system, it’s all easily accessible and includes reference cards with instructions on treating specific injuries. With kits ranging from a $24 basic emergency kit suitable for a day on the lake to a $600 all-inclusive kit housed in a dry box for extended offshore trips, there’s no excuse for not having one on your boat. The Adventure Medical Kit has made peace of mind as easy. The only thing left for you to do is put one on the boat.
