hile mystic grouper can be caught year-round in the Bahamas, the winter months are our favorite time of year. Whenever a weather window presents itself, we point our bow east across the Florida Straights in search of these deep-water bottom dwellers. Mystics are one of the lesser-known grouper species, simply because anglers don’t fish deep enough to target them. Like all grouper, they are excellent to eat and usually weigh from 15 to 50 pounds, although they can grow much larger. It takes special gear to fish the 800- to 1,200-foot depths where we find mystics. Armed with Shimano Tiagra 80 WAs and Shimano Tiagra 50 WAs equipped with Hooker Electric Autostop drives, we string up 65- to 100-pound Power Pro braid on Crafty One Custom’s Deep Drop Rods. We begin by paying close attention to our Humminbird Solix sonar with CHIRP HD digital technology to locate bottom structure. We look for cones, holes, drop-offs, ledges and deep-water ridges. Once viable structure is located, we position the boat above it with engines out of gear to judge how wind and current will manipulate our drift. Then the
boat is repositioned up-current from the structure and the deep-drop rigs are readied. When targeting mystics, we use our www.ThreeBuoysFishing.com grouper deep-drop rigs made with three 8/0 VMC 3x Circle Hooks on 100-pound branch lines off of 12 feet of 150-pound main line. For bait, we prefer fresh-cut 8-inch strips of dolphin, tuna, wahoo or barracuda. Many deep-drop anglers claim, “no light, no bite,” but our experience has proven that, especially with mystics, we catch more and bigger fish without lights. We deploy two rods on opposite sides of the boat. Lead weights in the 10-pound range are the rule of thumb, but weight can be adjusted to the current. After the weights hit bottom, the reels are left in freespool to lay the rigs straight down on the bottom. The engines should be used to decrease the boat’s drift to a standstill, if possible. If the boat drifts, let out line to keep the rigs on bottom. When the rod tip bumps and shakes, resist the urge to lock up the drag and retrieve line. Wait a minute or two for additional fish to sense the commotion. They’ll often eat the remaining baits. When it’s time to strike, lift the reel’s drag to strike (pre-set to 20 pounds of drag) and slowly start your retrieve. Big mystic grouper put up quite a fight at first, and you might even think you’ve hung bottom. Be patient and slowly gain as must line as possible. When fish are about halfway up, their air bladders expand and create lift. They will begin to float your rig up to the surface. For more tips and tactics on deep-dropping and the tackle and rigs to get tight, see www.threebuoysfishing.com. Finding bait becomes more important than at any other time of year. Goebel likes to get out well before dawn in search of shad or herring flickering near the surface, especially when a big moon keeps baitfish active all night. Diving birds are also a dead giveaway. They are likely feeding on baitfish pushed by stripers from below. “A lot of times if there’s bait there, I won’t even worry about marking fish on the graph,” Goebel said. “I’ll just put out my lines and start fishing where the bait is.”
By Nick Carter
T
here aren’t many anglers willing to endure the frigid early morning temperatures of winter on a large reservoir. But for those who can handle a little discomfort, right now is the best time of year to hook up with the striper of a lifetime. Around the Southeast, in reservoirs where striped bass were introduced, falling water temperatures spur changes in behavior that make the largest fish in the lake susceptible to anglers. Those 30- to 50-pounders are feeding up right now. They’re storing up reserves that will take them through the spring spawn. “It’s trophy striper season,” said Shane Goebel, of Big Ol’ Fish Guiding Service. “The bigger fish are participating a little better. This time of year, we start going after those big ol’ hogs that are chasing the big baits.” The large summer schools broke up months ago. Stripers are spread out and on the move, following baitfish into the creek mouths and up into the backs of the creeks. Big fish move shallow when water temps hit the mid to low 50s on the lakes Goebel guides in the mountains of north Georgia and western North Carolina. It might take some searching to find them, but the rewards can be huge.
Because the stripers are continually moving with the bait, covering water is crucial. Goebel said to troll as many baits in as wide a spread as you can handle. Herring are great on lakes where they are present, but this time of year you should also work some big gizzard shad or trout into the spread. Sometimes it takes a big mouthful to convince big fish to eat. Goebel runs baits 30 to 40 feet behind planer boards. He’ll drop freelines 100 to 150 feet behind the boat. If the area where he finds bait isn’t too shallow, he’ll put a little bit of weight ahead of the baits on the inside boards to cover more water vertically. He slow trolls at about half a mile per hour. This is a pattern Goebel fishes all the way into May, when stripers have moved into a pre-spawn phase. It might not produce the numbers of fish that downlining into summer mega-schools will, but the fish are generally a lot bigger than those 5- to 10-pound summer schoolies. If catching an enormous striper sounds like fun, zip up your parka and get out on the lake. It’s trophy striper season. Check out Big Ol’ Fish Guiding Service at bigolfish.com.

f Costa Rica isn’t already on your bucket list, it should be. Famous for both inshore and offshore fishing, it’s also a country with incredible biodiversity and exciting eco-tourism opportunities. In short, there’s something for every sportsman and adventure seeker here. From a fishing perspective, the west coast of this Central American country is most favored with several significant cities and ports including Jaco, Quepos and, of course, Golfito. It’s Los Suenos, however, where
my wife, Felicia and I found outstanding action on a trip last April. We worked the inshore grounds, catching huge roosterfish, rainbow runners, grouper, jacks and even mahi. We also decked a big cubera snapper. Of course, we did have an edge. Coastal Angler’s very own Costa Rica inshore reporter Capt. Carlos Arguedas and his first-mate son, Christopher, were our charter crew. “This really is a terrific place to fish,” said Arguedas, “We have access to a lot of different spots ranging from very close to the marina to 50 miles away. The roosterfish action is unbelievable here but we also catch big cubera snapper, amberjack, groupers and huge red snappers, too.” Arguedas loves to take clients for roosterfish because they fight so hard, are found close to port, and grow big. He’s had a 90-pounder grace his deck. For these, he’ll slow troll live baits like blue runners, herring, sardines or bonita. All of these baits, impaled on size 8 circle hooks, also attract other large predators; so you never know what to expect when the rod doubles over. “Roosterfish are very impressive when you first see them,” said Arguedas. “They are exotic-looking with big dorsal rays, a huge mouth and striped flanks. They are stunning to see for the first time. They are also exceptionally strong. Fight a 20-pounder and you’ll think you have a 40-pounder at the end of the line. They jump, too, and shake their head, so remember to lower your rod tip when that fish comes up or you’ll tear the hook free.” Among the other big fish that hit the deck for Arguedas’ crew on a regular basis are goliath grouper that can top 400 pounds. These are targeted around local reefs. If you want to run offshore, sailfish, tuna and marlin abound within 10 miles of port. Dorado, sometimes topping 30 pounds, can be tempted within sight of the coast. Costa Rica’s tropical climate makes it a year-round destination. Most travelers prefer to visit during the dry season, which runs from December through April, but you’ll find lighter crowds and lower travel prices during the “green” or rainy season from May to November. Whenever you visit, it really helps to work with a travel pro that deals frequently with Costa Rica to customize a trip here. Blue Water Sportfishing Charters (http://bluewatersportfishingcharters.com) specializes in setting up trips to Los Suenos. They can put you in the right place at the right time for the fish you want to catch, sights you want to see or adventures you want to experience. They’ll also book you with Capt. Carlos—or you can contact him yourself at www.wingmancr.com.

he first time I saw someone spearfishing, I was intrigued and wondered out loud how hard it would be to load a speargun. A friend heard me and said, “I’m sure you can do it. It’s probably more about technique than brute strength.” He was right. It’s not uncommon to struggle to load your first speargun, and you might suspect they made the bands too short. If you give it some time and use the right technique, it will become easy. First, some safety tips: 1) Never load a speargun out of the water. 2) Keep the safety on until you intend to shoot a fish. 3) Even with the safety on, treat it like a loaded weapon, never let the tip point at anyone. 4) Use tip protectors when not in use, so you don’t scratch anything. Some spearguns are loaded by resting the butt of the gun on your hip and pulling the bands toward the shaft notches. Others are loaded by resting the butt high on the middle of the chest and pulling the bands toward your sternum. Hip-loading spearguns are commonly used by scuba divers, as chest loading can be difficult when wearing a buoyancy compensator vest. Freedivers are less constricted by gear, so they normally use chest-loading spearguns. These have longer range because the shaft tabs sit closer to the butt of the gun. Now, some loading tips: 1) Wear gloves and wetsuit to prevent slips, scrapes or bruising. Some wetsuits have a loading pad built into the chest. 2) Don’t look down and hunch over when loading the bands. Push forward with your chest and pull the band swiftly with your arms, so the shaft tabs are pushed forward to meet the incoming
band. 3) Use a loading tab (if using a wood gun). This simple device makes things much easier by allowing you to first hip load the band to the loading tab and then raise the butt to your chest for the final pull. Although it’s a two-step process, it can be done quickly and will feel much easier. 4) If your bands are still too hard to load, use three longer bands. 5) Work out, lift weights, work on core and upper body. Try bench presses, seated rows, bent over rows, pushups and pull-ups. Bands and dumbbells can be incorporated into your workout routine, whether at the gym or home. If you want to see a band loading video, check out Coastal Angler online. And remember—you can accomplish anything you set your mind to! he action in northwest Costa Rica has once again been off the charts as FishingNosara celebrates its 10th season of charter fishing. All five boats are in the water and scoring big for their clients, with 51 trips logged in November. Big dorados are the staple catch this time of year, but it was a welcome surprise to see swarms of billfish in the mix. The team nabbed 12 marlin releases, 24 sailfish releases, 217 dorados, and five roosterfish releases. One of these roosters was a nearworld-record at 72 pounds. On Nov. 19, Capt. Alex on the Harvester posted the best trip of the month with Terry and Julie Edwards’ group. They loaded up the trophy case with excellent releases. A 300-plus-pound blue marlin was the headliner of the trip for these Texas anglers, and shortly after that battle, the 32-foot mega panga nabbed a wonderful sailfish release. Team Edwards came inshore to finish the day, and saved the best for last… that massive 72-pound roosterfish.
2
The IGFA All-Tackle Record for roosterfish is 114 pounds, and the second-place fish is 85 pounds. This fish caught by the Harvester wasn’t far off the second place catch. Most impressively, the above-mentioned IGFA record catches were posted in 1960 and 1954 respectively. This size of roosterfish has not been seen in more than five decades. On the same day, other members of Julie Edwards’ family had a big time on the 32-foot Discoverer with a blue marlin release of their own. Capt. Carlos estimated this fish at 250 pounds upon release. Also in November, FishingNosara Hall of Famer Bill Harris took to the 28-foot bar-room brawler Explorer and opened up her season with a billfish grand slam! A big blue marlin was the highlight of the morning, and it was followed by a late-day striped marlin. Bill nabbed the first marlin, and Mark Scott scored the second. A nice Pacific sailfish caught by Diane Turner completed the grand slam for these Tampa, Fla.based anglers. They didn’t go home empty handed, either, thanks to five big tasty dorado catches spread throughout the day. On the Discoverer, the team of Eli Bedran, Andrew Lipps, Kelsey Harry and Laurie Harry report a fantastic blue marlin release, the first of the year for the big battleship, plus six lovely dorados. John Purdy, John Van Diver, Mike Pickelsimer and Dale McElroy fished in early November and reported 11 sweet dorados on ice. The Harvester has been itching for action, and found what she was looking for as these monsters topped out at 60 pounds. The action was so hot that Capt. Alex chose to release the biggest cows so as not to hurt the stocks. Naturally, we have full reports of all these catches and more archived at Blog.FishingNosara.com, including videos. January and February will be super-busy and the spring months are already filling up fast. Get your plans together so we can secure your fishing adventure with FishingNosara, some of the best sportfishing in Costa Rica.

oel’s Distributing in south Florida has reached a milestone—40 years in business. Not many operations can make that claim, and so a look down memory lane seems appropriate. Tom Noel, aka Paddleboat Tom, moved to Florida from Michigan in 1979. He closed his grocery store, loaded a pickup truck with three paddleboats, his wife Joy, two sons, a daughter and the family dog and headed south. Tom set up shop in his garage in their Lake Clarke Shores home. After a few years, Joy put her foot down and insisted that he find a warehouse. Tom rented a space next to their current location, just off Forest Hill Blvd in West Palm Beach. A couple of years later he bought the 3,000 square-foot warehouse. Tom’s sons Rob and Tom are also involved with the business. Noel’s Distributing sells safety equipment, fire extinguishers, flares, rope, anchors and a warehouse full of other boating supplies to their clients, predominately in the Keys, along the east coast and in central Florida. They will ship anywhere. Many of their clients search them out for their custom rope splicing and then discover the realm of equipment they carry. If you are looking for anything marine related, it’s worth a phone call. They are generally a better value than the larger chain stores. Tom and his sons are very thankful for their longtime clients. Check out Noel’s Distributing at noeldistributing.com or give them a call at (561) 585-2387.

ahoo Smackdown X, hosted by the historic Bimini Big Game Club Resort and Marina on Nov. 8-12, saw 23 boats competing for more than $25,000 in cash and prizes. Out of the 23 competing boats, 22 teams landed fish, bringing 152 wahoo to the scales in the process. Team Who’s Your Daddy took top team honors with 16 fish weighing a total of 231.5 pounds and took home $15,000 in cash winnings. Second place was Team Blitzsea, which earned $7,500 in cash for their 21 fish and a total catch weight of 206.4 pounds. Team Murderize, out of Freeport, Grand Bahama, finished third, taking home $2,500 in cash winnings for a catch of 11 fish with a total catch weight of 193.6 pounds. Team Little Giant caught the largest wahoo of the tournament at 50.7 pounds. Tournament festivities included live local entertainment nightly, a cocktail reception poolside for the captains’ meeting, a cookout on day one of the tournament, and a closing awards party on the great lawn, featuring a buffet, live entertainment and a full open bar. Sponsors for this year’s tournament include American Beverage Marketers (www.masterofmixes.com) as the Title Sponsor, Bahamian Brewery and Beverage (Sands), artist David Dunleavy, Tropic Ocean Airways, Caza Offshore, Live Wire Tackle, Flanigan’s, CS Custom Lures and Bimini Big Game Club. With more than 50-record-setting catches in the waters around the island, Bimini has often been referred to as the Sport Fishing Capital of the World. The Big Game Club opened for business in 1947. Owner Neville Stewart saw the promise and allure of fishing and personally developed and encouraged tournaments. He sold his interest to Bacardi, which over 30 years grew the tradition with many memorable tournaments. The current owners, the Southern California-based Hankey Group, put the iconic fishing resort back in play in 2010 and are completing a multi-million-dollar renovation, that includes numerous capital improvements to the rooms, restaurant and lounge, landscaping, new pool and a renovated 75 slip marina, including docks and seawall.

et out and eat some delicious fresh seafood during this year’s 13th anniversary of the Port Salerno Seafood Festival. The fun takes place along the historic waterfront of Port Salerno on Saturday, Jan. 26 from 10 a.m. – 8 p.m. This local event boasts the best seafood that you will find at any festival, a great music line-up, hundreds of arts, crafts, local businesses and food vendors, as well as a Free Kids Fun Zone, mermaids, pirates and more. “There is a reason why the seafood is so delicious,” said Edward “Butch” Olsen, Jr., president of the Port Salerno Commercial Fishing Dock Authority. “We serve the freshest seafood and locally caught fish when possible. Most of our seafood is prepared by the fishermen and their families. This is truly a family affair.” The event also features Port Salerno’s finest restaurants. “Our festival is fortunate to have the resources and support of longtime business sponsors Southern Eagle Distributing & Elite Gas Contractors, along with our many media and business partners and more than 1,000 volunteers who graciously support this event. In addition to supporting the commercial fishing docks in Port Salerno, this event gifted $12,000 to 15 local charities in 2018. Like most events in the region, this year we have seen a significant increase in logistical expenses which has necessitated a modest price increase at our gate and to our vendor fees. It’s important that we meet our financial goals from year to year, which includes our ability to support our charities,” said Olsen. Advance tickets are $10 online. Admission at the gate is $13 for adults, children 10 and under are free. The festival provides complimentary transportation to and from the event via trolley or water taxi. FISHY RESOLUTIONS Be Prepared This could almost be a corollary to the first resolution. I don’t know why, but I get frustrated when I see people arrive at their fishing destination unprepared and waste 15 – 20 minutes of a hot bite to rig up their tackle. Rig up your rods the night before so you are ready to go as soon as you get on the water I’ve never written a New Year’s resolutions article. It would be easy for me to just say “fish more”, but I’m going with the premise that most folks are like me, working a full time job and raising a family. In other words we’re busy and have to squeeze fishing trips into whatever free time we can scratch out. With that in mind, here are a few resolutions that will hopefully help you get the most out of that precious time on the water. Fish the Magic Hour I call the first hour of daylight in the morning, from first light until about sunrise, the Magic Hour. Most days this is the best time to fish, especially during the warmer months. Much of nature is active during the Magic Hour, winds are usually at their lightest, and most humans are still in bed. If you are willing to give up a little sleep to get out early, you’ll face the most active fish, the nicest weather and the least competition of the day.

Learn How to Tie a Few Good Knots Speaking of tying lures to your line, I don’t know why so many anglers don’t bother to learn how to tie a decent fishing knot. Poor knots are weak knots that lead folks to use heavier line than necessary. Heavy line kills casting distance and diminishes lure action. Learning fishing knots is not difficult. There are plenty of online videos to teach you any knot you want to know. I recommend the Uni knot, Clinch knot and Rapala (loop) knot for starters and the Bimini Twist, Snell and FG knot for a little more advanced anglers. Practice the knots before you try to use them in real fishing situations. Simple knots like the Uni and Clinch can be mastered in a few minutes. More complicated knots like the Bimini and FG may take an hour. Learning and mastering a few good knots will not only give you strong tackle connections you can trust, they will enable you to re-tie quickly should you have to recover from a
break off. Practice Casting Nothing else in fishing matters if you can’t get your bait or lure in front of the fish. Elite anglers have a variety of skills, but one thing they all have in common is they are good casters. The only way to become a good caster is to practice. You can scatter a few five gallon bucket lids in your back yard and practice casting to themDon’t just blindly fling you lure out there. Pick a target, a mullet swirl, a piece of floating grass, a dark spot on the bottom, a ripple, anything, and cast to it. Try for both speed and accuracy. Don’t just practice hitting a target on the cast, also practice retrieving your lure into targets. Wind will put a bow in your line so a lure doesn’t always make a straight track back your rod tip. Learn how to account for that so that when a fish shows up near the boat you can get your bait in front of it before it spooks. There are plenty of things you can do to be a better angler and this article just touches on a few of them. Resolve to improve your skills so 2019 is your best year of fishing ever. By Paul MacInnis

Happy
New Year gang! I’m happy to report surviving another trip around the sun and looking forward to fishing my way through year 2019. I hope you’ll join me through the adventure! We should now be in the midst of actual winter fishing patterns with predictable fish behavior. As we move through our cold season and the typical weekly cold fronts it’s not too difficult to plan when to venture forth into the shallows and target redfish, trout and black drum. Water temperatures play a much bigger role in fish activity than air temp; which plays a huge role in human activity. I find water temps below fifty-two degrees exceedingly tough to catch fish here and I much prefer water temps to be fifty-seven degrees or higher. Many, many times last winter we watched fish activity increase with the rise in water temperatures. Often the fish, especially laid-up spotted seatrout, became super aggressive as the temps climbed beyond fifty-six degrees. 4 BREVARD

JANUARY 2019
As a fishing guide I/we don’t always have the luxury of waiting for the right day. We must make do with the conditions Mother Nature gives us no matter how cold it is. We can, though start our day later than usual and let the sun warm the water’s a bit with the hope of better, if not ideal, conditions. Think small and slow as well as light and thin in your tackle and gear selection. I’m talking about two, three and four inch soft plastics worked slowly and six or eight pound braided line with twelve or fifteen pound leaders; long leaders. In winter’s clear water the downsizing of these critical components will increase your catch exponentially! My favorite lures are Z-Man Curly Tailz, Minnowz, Deizel Minnowz and EZ Shrimpz.

PORT CANAVERAL
BANANA RIVER LAGOON
Redfish should strike live or cut baits on a standard bottom rig along the beaches outside of the port this month.
Slot sized redfish are most likely to be found on banks with a southern exposure which are protected from a northerly wind.
December showed us what a great fishery the beaches outside of Port Canaveral have to offer. Pompano, whiting, redfish, snook, tripletail, jack, Spanish mackerel, flounder, and many other species were practically jumping into the boat. If the water temperatures stay around the 65 to 70-degree mark, we can expect more of the same from this body of water. Spoons, Sea shad and goofy style jigs, Rapala X-Rap and Subwalk plugs, and even topwater popper were working on most days. For live baits, pilchards or live shrimp should work for these species. This area should also expect our annual arrival of weakfish in
the main shipping channel and along the 20 to 40-foot contours this month. Weather will be the key to catching fish. If we get light winds all of these fish should stay around to play. If the north winds blow it will push many of these fish south in search of warmer waters. Capt. The waters should be clearing up somewhat with the colder temperatures we are expecting to see in January. Anglers can sight cast to redfish and speckled trout on days when the winds are down and the fish are out scouting for a meal in the shallows of this lagoon. One of the best options is a free lined shrimp rigged on a 1/0 or 2/0 sized VMC circle hook. Everything eats a shrimp, so if you cast one in front of a fish in search of a meal it shouldn’t last long. Small jigs, spoons, and soft plastic jerk baits can also be effective when targeting fish in the shallows. Anglers searching deeper waters

in the residential canals and dredge holes can add a split shot for weight or even rig their live shrimp on a jig head. Find the areas with sun lit banks that are protected by the wind and you should find good numbers of fish feeding there. Capt. PORT CANAVERAL OFFSHORE I hope everyone’s holidays and New Years was awesome and safe! Just want to say thank you to everyone who helped me out this past year. Without our fishing community being so friendly to one another all the time, fishing would be way more difficult at times. Part of doing well out here is knowing where they’re chewing and sometimes relying on the help from fellow captains. Thank You! I am asked to have these reports in a month ahead of time so it can be hard sometimes to give an accurate forecast almost two months away. If I have been off, I am sorry. I definitely try my best to go by what has been running, what should be running and what was running a year ago to come up with the best report I can. Besides the weather being the biggest factor in January, fishing is normally pretty good. The king run should continue to do well. This is also usually the time the sails and wahoo get a little
better for us. We don’t have the run that down south gets but it is normally pretty decent if you can target them. I looked at my pictures from last year and I remembered we had a few good days of mahi too. Don’t forget grouper closes this month. Please be sure to follow up on all the regulations. I know its tough when they are constantly changing and normally the enforcers don’t know the rules themselves. If the wind allows you to at least fish the beach, you may come across sea
trout, whiting and croakers to keep you and the kids occupied. Take advantage of the few good days we’re going to see and get out there and kill a few fish! I look forward to an awesome year and I hope y’all do too. This report has been brought to you by Captain Chris Cameron of Fired Up Fishing Charters, your premier fishing guide charter of shark fishing Cocoa Beach, offshore fishing Port Canaveral, near shore fishing Cape Canaveral, Orlando charter fishing.

SHRIMP REPORT
The 2018-2019 season has everyone on edge ever time the temperature drops below 60 degrees. This is not the one variable that makes for a strong shrimp run. So, relax and take comfort in knowing January is when we start seeing some decent sizes. Personally, I start my shrimping season hunting on the January moon events (I stay home on 8 BREVARD
January Layout.indd 8
JANUARY 2019
actual full moon night). In December Edgewater was catching small shrimp off private docks. History shows the middle of Jan to middle of February is when the big run begins and continues through May/June. Titusville has had some success via boat at Railroad Bridge. The sizes are nice and these were caught back in November.
Shrimp grow about 2 inches a month so imagine how big they will be this month. January is a tough month to shrimp because the run is lean. We do not expect see full pulls this month. It will be ¼ to 2 gallons at best but the sizes are priceless.
The Titusville pier is open, new restaurant and bait store. The pier is restored from 2016 hurricanes and all new electrical wiring and breakers. Reports will be daily this month, and you can monitor the intel. Please do not use monofilament frame nets, they are illegal. You can dip while your underway but you cannot drag a box/frame net.
Typically the earlier the season the larger the shrimp. This is why we hunt this month thru February aggressively, so we can get quality shrimp over quantity. Come March the dinks come out, and 5 gallons is real easy. January and February shrimping takes a lot more skill to dial into the big ones. Plus, the stream is smaller so you really have to drop your boat right in front of the runners. The water is warm which means unless we have some cold fronts, the bait and catfish are going to black out the lights.
Please check your navigation lights and carry a back up if you blow one out. We are seeing kayak and paddleboarders dipping, and they need to see us when we move around. Keep an eye on barges, they will strike your vessel if you do not move, they have no choice. For daily intel come to our Facebook group, “Florida Shrimping Academy – Tips & Tricks”.

SEBASTIAN INLET TO EAU GALLIE Jacks, Bluefish, Sharks and Tarpon. Lures like the Rapala XRap 14 and the Long Cast 14 are great plugs to fish from the jettys as well as from the rocks along the west side of the bridge.. Anglers drifting live bait between the fenders will have plenty of snook action as well as redfish and tarpon. The Flounder will still be in the inlet and anglers can catch them from shore and boat with live bait or ½-3/4 ounce jigs with strip baits or soft plastics like the DOA Paddle tails or 4” jerkbaits.
January is normally our coldest
month of the year but the cold fronts will fire up the fishing along the beaches, and in Sebastian Inlet but will generally slow things down in the lagoon. If the weather stays warm, the Snook and Redfish will stay active in the inlet and the Lagoon bite will be good too. The colder temps clean the water in the Indian River Lagoon quite a bit and the fish are lethargic. The trout will move to deeper wa-
ter and even into the inlet to get the bait flushing out along with warmer water. Long casts are the key to success in the Indian River Lagoon as the fish are wary due to the visibility. No need to get out early as the bite is better when the water warms up and we normally fish around the tides. Anglers fishing the jettys and drifting the inlet on outgoing tide in the evenings during or after a strong NE coldfront should have steady action with Snook,
If the rains aren’t strong and the locks stay closed, the trout, drum and redfish will move into the Sebastian River, Crane Creek and Turkey Creek. Live Shrimp and finger mullet are great live baits or you can fish the Rapala Twitchin Mullet or Shadow Rap Shad around docks and oyster bars and catch some very nice trout as well as Snook, Jacks, Ladyfish and the occasional Redfish or Tarpon.

KAYAK REPORT
January can be a tough month
for Central Florida anglers, but those with kayaks gain the advantage. With the our lagoon water levels low, and the ability to “launch quickly” when the conditions look just right, the kayak crowd will get plenty of chances to score fish that the boat crowd can’t. The winter sight fishing season is here. Your two main targets will be the Redfish (Reds) and Black Drum (Drum) that invade the Indian River, Banana River, and Mosquito Lagoon flats. All of these bodies of water are different, but
14 BREVARD
January Layout.indd 14
JANUARY 2019
the Redfish and Black Drum inhabiting the flats share the same needs and comforts. Due to the cooler water, metabolisms have slowed. Couple that with the lack of “bait” fish, and you have Reds and Drum keying in on shrimp, crabs, marine worms, clams, and snails as their main food source. The days that see sunny skies and calm winds will give you the best chance at some hot fishing action, but be sure to have a good pair of polarized sunglasses, and hit the waters from 10am to 2pm. For the best sight fishing move excruciatingly slow, and be prepared to cast at fish that are less than a
rod length from you. The Black Drum is very interesting fish with poor eyesight, and a mouth designed for foraging the bottom. Its primary foods are shrimp, crab, marine worms, and snails that Drum key in on by scent and small movements detected with sensitive chin barbells (soft whiskers). Black Drum of 10 pounds or less will have vertical black and white stripes resembling those of a Sheepshead. However, larger individuals will have black to brassy coloring that fades to light on the bottom. They can be seen slowly cruising, “laid-up” stationary, or tailing as the root the bottom for a snack. Drum are typically found on the lagoon flats (1-3 ft.) in the cooler winter months then move deeper around bridges in the summer months. Typical river tackle will manage most Space Coast Drum, but heavier tackle may be needed for bruisers that can top 50 lbs. Due to the Drum’s poor vision, 3 ft. leaders of 30-40 lb. test will work well. Natural baits, like the quartered blue crab, fresh shrimp, or fresh clams can be
used with a 3/0-5/0 circle hook and a few split-shot weights to get the line down. “Dead stick” (sit motionless) these baits in a likely area or where you see tails. Actively sight fish Black Drum with a live shrimp and a 1/8 oz. jighead threaded in the tail, be sure to pull the flapper fins! For artificial, an 1/8 oz. jighead with a Slayer Inc. SSB(molting) or Gulp shrimp in natural, glow, and molting can be slowly worked across the bottom. Larger Black Drum tend to be found on the bars and edges of flats with a relatively quick drop from 1-3 ft. that the Indian River, Banana River, Mosquito Lagoon have in abundance. Smaller Drum prefer flats 1 ft. or less, and are commonly found with Redfish. Fish all Black Drum slowly as they are not used to their food moving fast or far. Capt. PRO TIPS
Nick Galati, from a recent trip on the Mosquito Lagoon. Nick was able to feed a tailing redfish about 30 feet from the boat using a D.O.A. Shrimp, rigged weedless with an Owner 3/0 twist lock hook. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! I am honored to begin another year of sharing tips for successful fishing here in Brevard County! For those of you who are just joining us, welcome! My name is Capt. Jonathan Moss and this is January’s Pro Tip! Winter is here, temperatures are dropping and fishing patterns have changed. So let’s talk about
where and when to catch fish. Cooler air temperatures cause our water temperatures to drop. This change in water temperature plays a vital role in our estuary as cold water kills the brown algae that is thriving in our warm lagoons. Remove the brown algae and the water clears up. Additionally, because of the clear
water, sunlight is able to penetrate the sea grass, which aids in grass growth through photosynthesis. Sea grass and pot holes (sand spots with in the grass) provide a place for crustaceans, like shrimp and crabs, to hide from predator fish. It’s during the winter months, that our redfish begin to feed primarily on crustaceans. Therefore making these grass beds a go to when looking for feeding fish. As you approach on the flats, do so with stealth and focus. Clearer water means these fish can see an approaching angler, so move quietly as to not draw any extra unneeded attention. Be on the look out for fish in or on the edges of pot holes. These fish are staged to ambush and feed. Tailing redfish can also be found on the flats. These fish are actively looking for and pinning their meal to the bottom. Oh what a sight to see!
several hours after sunrise. Making a later start allows the sun to rise higher in the sky and water temperatures to warm up. Even a change of just a few degrees in the water temperature can make all the difference. Remember that shallow water will warm up more quickly than the deep. The same goes with deeper water taking longer to cool off than the shallow. Therefore, as the sunsets and both the air and water temperatures drop, the fish will move out into deeper water. In the morning, as the sun rises and the water warms up on the shallow flats, the fish will move in to warm up. This needs to be taken into consideration when planning out your next fishing trip.
Colder air and water temperatures also mean a later start time for anglers. On cold mornings, I’ll begin my fishing charters

SURF FISHING
Angler with a nice Surf Bluefish. Happy New Year 2019 and welcome to the outstanding surf fishing that January brings to our Space Coast Beaches. Surf fishing will be a jump in and out game as the cold fronts arrive with their annual Northeast winds. But during all that, surf anglers willing to make the extra effort will be rewarded. This is
January Layout.indd 20
the time of year when we separate the once in a while anglers from the ones who are more dedicated (crazy) anglers. Now don’t get me wrong, I am not a snob, I have rolled over a lot of times on cold mornings and decided from my warm bed that no one was going to catch fish on a given day. Only to find out later
that the bite was on and I missed a good day of fishing. When asked later where I was during all the surf action, I responded that I had things to do around the house. Note to self: I am not a good liar. So dress for the conditions and enjoy the crisp mornings and great fishing on our beaches. The layered look is in this year for the surf angler. Growing up in the Chicago winters, I recall my Mother saying “remember dress warmly and take an extra sweater, you can always take it off if it gets to warm, without it you will be cold”. Truer words were never spoken and for the Florida winter surf angler it’s the same. Dress in layers and shed the cloths as the day warms up. January will see a host of opportunities for the surf angler. Whiting, sheepshead, drum, bluefish, pompano, flounder and sharks will be in the surf. Anglers will be able to use a number of different rods, reels, baits and tactics during this time of the year to catch fish.
Sand Fleas are a prime bait for pompano or sheepshead and always my first choice. Clams and shrimp follow as bait for whiting and drum. Bluefish are ravenous eaters and will eat just about anything but, dearly love a chunk of finger mullet as do the bonnethead sharks. So with the right baits, favorable wind and sea conditions anything is possible and generally happens during January. If the bluefish are running there is no better beach sport than catching them on a single hook rig in the surf. Anglers use Fishbites or chunked finger mullet and once hooked up with a 18-20 inch bluefish their in for a real treat. Use casting / spinning rods (7 to 8 ft) and a silver gator spoon with single hook attached, tip with Fishbites for a deadly bait in the surf. Gulf Red Snapper Meetings Slated FWC photo by Allen Peirce he Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council is holding public hearings and a webinar to solicit public comments on Draft Amendment 50—State Management of Recreational Red Snapper. This amendment would, if approved, allow state management in future years and would provide flexibility to the Gulf states to set the recreational red snapper fishing season and potentially other management measures. To provide additional opportunities for the public to comment on this proposal, FWC is also holding public workshops on state management of Gulf red snapper. Dates and locations for the meetings are as follows (unless noted below, all meetings are from 6-9 p.m. local time): • Jan. 7 – Fort Myers: Hyatt Place Fort Myers at the Forum, 2600 Champion Ring Road. • Jan. 8 – Saint Petersburg: Hilton St. Pete Carillon Park, 950 Lake Carillon Drive. • Jan. 15 – Key West: Harvey Government Center, 1200 Truman Ave., 2nd Floor; *Hosted by FWC. • Jan. 17 – Webinar: https://attendee.gotowebinar.com/register/2288573373994739724. • Jan. 23 – Tallahassee: Farris Bryant Building, 620 S. FRESHWATER
Since 2015, Frabill has continued to set the quiet standard in bucket conversion. The Frabill Whisper Quiet Aerator system is a portable, aeration design that provides the utmost discretion when fishing with live bait. Constructed with 75 years of experience, the Whisper Drive Aeration Motor has been specifically designed and tested to keep saltwater baitfish and crustaceans healthy and active while emitting minimal sound. With a couple of batteries, the Whisper Quiet Aerator converts any size cooler or bucket into an oxygen-rich livewell. Frabill’s top-of-the-line signature yellow air stone creates enough bubbles to effectively aerate up to 15 gallons of water. As a result of its over-engineered rugged design, Frabill’s Whisper Quiet Aerator has a long shelf life. The aeration system includes premium water-resistant internal parts that help prevent corrosion and won’t let an angler down. Never be surprised by battery rot again.

Surprising Winter is the Best Planting Time
I am often asked when is the best time to plant fruiting plants. My answer is usually the same; the best time is 20 years ago or today. The second best time to plant is during the winter months. Plants are dormant, and can be easily shipped and planted with no stress on the plant because there is not a lot of maintenance once the plant or tree has been planted. Simply dig a good hole, water thoroughly
at planting, and take the rest of the winter off. Even though there are no signs of growth above ground, the root systems will have time to get adjusted to their new location and begin to initiate new root growth. There are plenty of advantages of growing your own edibles. First of all, you know what has been done over the course of the growing season from a chemical stand point. Second, the fruit just taste
better coming out of your home orchard versus buying fruit from the grocers that have little to no flavors. Thirdly, it is good for your soul and you will feel more connected to the environment and nature. Whether it is an apple tree, muscadine vine or a blueberry bush; now is the time to plant.
