F
ast and stable, with a needle nose that reminded people of a mosquito buzzing over southern waters, the world’s first bass boat was the 1948 brainchild of Shreveport, Louisiana’s Holmes Thurmond. That first Skeeter boat, made of molded marine plywood, caught on quickly with local anglers. It launched the brand
that today, 70 years later, is still renowned for building innovative boats designed specifically for the needs of recreational anglers. Cary Crutchfield, co-publisher of Coastal Angler Magazine’s North Central Florida edition, owns one of those early Skeeter boats. When he bought his first Skeeter in the 1960s, the company was already leading the way in what became an industry-wide transition to fiberglass. His was a 15-foot model with stick steering up front that was powered by a 35hp outboard. “It’s real easy to fish from, and it’s just a neat 6

looking boat,” Crutchfield said of those early flat-bottomed Skeeters. “It’s narrow, and the way the sides turn up to the cockpit makes it very stable to move around in.” With today’s bass boats, a 250hp Yamaha seems like a necessity to even compete on the tournament circuits. Back then, a Skeeter with a 35hp was capable of reaching speeds in excess of 30 mph. It was a fishing boat superior to any that came before it. The Super Skeeter arose as the boat for serious anglers fishing the large, newly constructed man-made reservoirs that have since fueled the sport. Crutchfield sold his 15-footer in the 1980s and almost immediately began kicking himself. He missed the narrow profile and shallow draft, along with kind of stability that allows him to stand comfortably and pole into very tight places. It wasn’t long before he ran into another old Skeeter he had to have, this one a 14-footer, originally powered by a 25hp outboard that has since been replaced by a 1950s model 12hp. Even with that old motor, it still gets around pretty quickly, and Crutchfield said it’s still the perfect small fishing boat where he launches on the Suwannee River. With the spirit of innovation that gave rise to that first bass boat and an open ear to the new requirements of early bass tournaments, Skeeter grew and evolved with the sport. The Skeeter Hawk did away with the characteristic pointed bow, which allowed for a smoother ride and a raised casting platform. In the 1970s, after moving into its current plant in Kilgore, Texas, Skeeter rolled the dice and introduced the legendary Wrangler to the bass fishing world. Rated for 150hp with a V-bottom, it was an odd and new style that absolutely dominated the competition in performance. It became the template that led to the high-performance fishing machines that roar
around our reservoirs today. In 2018, Skeeter Performance Fishing Boats is celebrating its 70th year of providing anglers with exceptional fishing boats. With modern technology and computer design capabilities, it has continued to lead the industry with innovations such as the first production composite bass boat, the ZX202, in the mid-1990s. The venerable ZX series, in all its versions, has been a staple in the bass tournament world for more then three decades. But listening to the needs of the fishermen who are its customers, Skeeter branched out to produce deep-v boats for walleye tournament anglers on the big lakes of the north, as well as bay boats for saltwater anglers. Skeeter’s acquisition by Yamaha in 1996 brought new resources to the table and advances followed. In 2001, Skeeter again set a new standard for the industry with its Torque Transfer Transom and Stringer System, which provides lift to the entire keel, while eliminating stress on the on the transom, deck, hull and sides. Through all the advancements, Skeeter boats bear little resemblance to Thurmond’s first bass boat. But the same concept, to design perfect

Drifting For
Nighttime Yellowfin On Gulf Floaters

Y
ellowfin tuna are some of the most sought after gamefish in the world. They are the ahi tuna on the menus at restaurants and sushi bars, and in the water they have the speed and power to wear down anglers and break gear. The signature “spiral” that tuna commence in the waning moments of a fight is responsible for untold numbers of broken lines and broken hearts. After battling 30 mph runs for 20 minutes or more, the weary angler, captain and crew face one final test, a team effort to survive the spiral and get the fish on deck. These tense moments, when a big yellowfin turns sideways and begins to circle, using its body’s mass as leverage, are the most critical minutes of the fight. If the line even touches the boat, it will snap, and the circling fish provides many opportunities for this to happen. These moments are the reason Randy King, of Paparda Rey Fishing Charters out of Galveston, Texas, says the main limitation on their catch is the ability of the angler. The captain, Kenneth Doxey, is solid. He has been running their 54-foot Bertram and their 35-foot Cabo for more than a decade. He was the 2016 recipient
of the Houston Big Game Fishing Club’s Jim Peachey Award. The crew is also top-notch, which leaves the angler as the potential weak link. The good news is there will likely be multiple opportunities on one of their overnight trips to deep-water oil platforms off Texas. King said a great trip with six anglers would yield a dozen yellowfin tuna in the 40- to 120-pound range, and that doesn’t include the shots anglers will have at mahi-mahi, wahoo, marlin and blackfin tuna. Out of Galveston, it’s 100 miles or more into the Gulf of Mexico to reach the enormous floating gas and oil structures off the edge of the Continental Shelf. These deep-water facilities, known as “floaters,” create their own food chain, consolidating bait and gamefish from miles around. On a typical 36- or 48-hour trip, don’t plan on sleeping much. The floaters are brightly lit at night, which is when the tuna fishing is best. After identifying fish on the sonar, chumming and drift fishing with 30-pound-class tackle is usually the most productive method for yellowfin. “Sometimes the tuna will start breaching,” said King. “They’ll jump in the air like king mackerel.” It’s for these occasions, when fish are on the surface, that big spinning rigs armed with poppers are
kept on deck. Drifting and pulling poppers while chugging back up-current to start a new drift goes on all night long. At dawn, the bait rods come in, and it’s time to start trolling. The primary daylight targets are marlin, sailfish, wahoo and dolphin. Between night and day, it equates to a whole lot of big fish packed into a weekend at sea. By Randy “C-Note” Cnota f you’ve ever found yourself fishing for largemouths after a bitter cold front has blown into your area, then you might be familiar with how tough northern winds can make it to fill a livewell. All tournament anglers know these fronts wait until the night before the competition to crash the feeding-frenzy of the days prior to an event. There is hope in this situation, and it doesn’t involve finesse presentations. It requires you to break out your heaviest sticks and braid (65 lb. minimum) as well as your stoutest hooks and beefiest weights. It’s time to present your bait where many fear to go… under the floating grass mats. I have an 11 pounder, two 10 pounders and probably over 100 in the 5- to 8-lb. range to my credit using this technique. Mats of grass in the South consist of wide variety of aquatic vegetation. Where I fish most, they consist of hydrilla, submergent Airline_CoastalAnglerAd_3-2016_Layout 1 3/18/16 1:07 PM aPage 1 grass that grows to the surface, and hyacinth, a floating vegetation.

The hydrilla acts as a base that holds the hyacinth in place. This makes for a bass sanctuary similar to your home in that it has walls and a ceiling. The trick to presenting your bait to these cold fish hiding under the mats is to crash it through their roof (the hyacinth) using a large tungsten steel weight. The exact size is dependent upon the thickness of the mat, but you want a weight that penetrates without too much effort. I usually opt for a 1 ¾-ounce, as the bass will be heading for the deepest recesses of the mat. This is also a place that many anglers fail to target because it can be quite a chore to penetrate and doubly difficult to extract a fish… especially a big fish. This is why we use heavy rods, lines and hooks. The most popular baits to present to these fish are small craw or creature type baits. I find Gambler Chigger Craws or Burner Craws work great, but there’s no shortage of baits to choose from. Color is always a personal preference, but I’ve had the best results using hues of green like watermelon-red and green pumpkin for clear water and dark hues like black/blue or junebug for darker water. As for the technique, simply put, you have to get the bait through the roof and into the bass’ house so he can eat it, but there are too many subtleties to discuss here. Once a bass bites, you have to get him out so again… NO WIMPY TACKLE! If you’ve never punched mats, I suggest you go out with someone with experience. Commit to spending a lot of time punching the mats, and set out with a variety of weights, hooks and lures to experiment and fine tune your technique. pring is almost here on the Gulf and Atlantic coasts. Soon the redbuds and crabapples and a host of other flowering trees and plants will be budding. Where should you be fishing? For many years now, I’ve learned to read the plants that are blooming to know if the seasonal shift of my bay would be ahead of schedule or behind. While the last several winters have had bitter cold, these cold periods still have been shorter compared to long-term trends. This leads to certain flowering trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants to bloom early or later, and I’ve found over time this to be a consistent indicator correlating with forage species movements into and out of the bays and estuaries. Redbuds, crabapples, and a host of flowering bulbs tend to be great indicators of early spring warm ups and whether or not the trout will move early from the rivers and other winter haunts to more of a spring location ahead of schedule or sometimes behind schedule. You’ll have to begin making notes in your log as to what the fish are doing in your area and what species to watch as they bloom and stop. Seeing the redbuds flower early compared to prior seasons could lead you to abandon your winter fishing locations ahead of your planned time. I
n early November, my buddy and I set out to fish some shallow flats in our kayaks. The water and air temperatures were near the 80-degree mark in south Texas. The area we had available to us only had a few inches of tidal flow predicted. When saltwater fishing, current is at the top of the list for catching requirements, but when the tide doesn’t provide it, find something that will. I had not fished this area in three years, and since that time hurricane Harvey changed a few things from the vehicle access point to my favorite hole, which isn’t a hole anymore. Needless to say, this was going to be a scouting mission as well as a fishing trip. We made our way to our first stop, which was a large knee- to waist-deep grass flat with a deep channel running down one side that is separated by a few spoil islands. We anchored up at the tip of a spoil island and casted to the channel. Although there was an abundance of bait, we didn’t get a strike. Off to plan B, my old honey hole. Once there, I realized the sweet spot was no longer, but we fished the area thoroughly since bait was present. We managed only a few strikes and a couple small trout. Knowing that the fish were inactive and that the tide was weak, I searched for an area where the wind might help drive a little more water flow to get the fish feeding. We headed back to the vicinity of our first stop, which was a flat the shape of a football field with the wind blowing from one endzone to the other. On the downwind side, there were a few small islands with breaks between them. Due to the wind, these breaks
funneled stronger water movement onto a small shallow flat. This flat didn’t have more bait than the other areas, but it did have water movement, which sparked the bite. We spent several hours in this tiny area catching reds and speckled trout. We used the same lures and presentation as we did earlier in the day. Soft plastic topwater jerk baits in pearl accounted for the more aggressive fish, but they were the smaller ones in this area. All of our larger fish came on slow-sinking paddle shad. Targeting the potholes and letting the lures slowly sink at the edge of the sand-to-grass transition drew the better strikes.

When fishing on less than desirable tides, remember to seek out locations that can offer it a push. Funnels and choke points are always a good bet, even if they are subtle. The water depth was the same on both sides and in between the islands, but it gave that little push the fish needed. Capt. Charleston’s Fishing Forecast For February By Captain Mark Phelps
F
ebruary is the last month of winter here in the low country. This is also the last month to find redfish in large schools. That means great sight fishing for redfish on the flats in and around the Charleston area. The redfish are in large schools of 100-200 fish per school. These fish can be found in shallow warmer water, and since the water is so clear, you will be able to see the fish very well. I typically look for calm, warm days when the tide is low in the mid morning or early afternoon. The warmer water draws the redfish to the very shallow areas and also puts them in the mood to eat something. If you fish a school for a while and the fish will not eat, you may need to find another school that has moved into warmer water. On the other hand, sometimes it pays to stay put and be patient. I have fished a school for an hour without getting a bite, but then when the tide changed or the water warmed up we caught fish every cast. One important thing to remember is the large schools of fish can spook easily, so be very quiet when approaching the school and make long casts to the fish so as not to spook them. The very cold “snow event” we had to start the year, has made the waters very cold. As the days get longer the water will warm up and the fish will get more active. An important thing to remember is that cold water will slow the fish down. You want to work your bait or fly very slowly to give the fish time to eat it. If you think you are fishing slowly, slow down more. Because fish are moving slowly and eating small things, you should fish small baits or flies. I like to use very natural colors this time if the year. I will either go with something olive-clear like the water or something dark brown- black to match the bottom. Another tip is to use ultra light rods so you can feel the bite. Sometimes the bite can be very subtle. I like to use light action rods in the 6-12 lb class with no more than 10 lb test line. I had some of my best redfish days last February so if you don’t get out and fish when you can you are missing some great action. The recent cold also caused us to lose some of our inshore fish, mostly Seatrout. The Department of Natural Resources ask that we have a volunteer effort to release as many seatrout as possible until the summer. This will help with the spawn of these fish to ensure a quick recovery. They were mostly affected by the dangerous low water temps we had during the first 8 days of the year. T
he winter started out rather unpredictable so it’s anybody’s guess what February has in store for us. Winter Storm Grayson left more than ice and snow in its wake. Unfortunately there have been a number of dead menhaden and other bait fish drifting through the harbor at the time this article went Birds enjoying the to press. While the birds and menhaden feast dolphins are enjoying the feast after the freeze. it’s anyone’s guess what this means for fishing in February. During the winter months the most consistent species to target from the pier is sheepshead. Fresh mussels seem to be the most reliable bait when targeting the local population this time of year. Fiddler crabs and oysters will also result in some nice catches, but fiddlers can be difficult to find when it’s cold out. In addition to the sheeps you may find red drum schools at times prowling the large flat adjacent to the pier and can be Kin Ladd 11 lb 4 oz tempted with a variety of live or Sheepshead cut bait. If we can get a stretch of milder temperatures there should be some trout to be caught as well. Since the freeze we’ve seen few trout hanging around which gives us hope that maybe things are better than they appear. Lately anglers have had some success targeting trout during the last 2 hours of the outgoing tide and the first 2 hours of the incoming tide when the water first starts to spill back onto the flat. The pier shop sells a variety of artificial baits that have been proven to work. Pier employees will be able to point you in the right direction and share some local knowledge that should enhance your chances. Through the end of February be sure to weigh in your sheepshead for the Winter Sheepshead Challenge. There is no cost to enter other than the daily fishing fee and the 3 biggest sheep caught from the pier will win gift cards. Contest ends February 28. The current leader is Kin Ladd with an 11lb 4 oz beast and we typically see some big ones this month. In fact, we’ve seen one 13 pounds or more caught the last week of February or the first week of March in years past. Best of luck to all who come out! I
t’s been a rough winter here in the Lowcountry thus far, especially for the fish and the fisherman. As fly fisherman, we love adapting and thankfully the state has plenty to offer. You can leave the S.C. coast after breakfast and be shin deep in the crystal clear trout waters of the upstate after lunch. The Chattooga River runs the border and was the first place designated by the US government as a “wild and scenic place.” It’s bigger water than most in the Southern Appalachians but would be a creek to most folks out west and is worth every minute it takes place to get there. Access of HWY 28 provides a easy walk into delayed harvest waters, or venture up towards Burrell’s Ford for smaller pocket water. Although we don’t al-
ways, trout thrive in these temperatures. The river has a year round population of stoneflies so this is always a good place to start if your unfamiliar with the rivers current happenings. From there I find myself fishing small midges in cream, black, or red in sizes so small a mother would hate. Streamer flies that mimic small baitfish and sculpins can also be very productive in winter. If trout aren’t your thing, the major lakes of the state have striped bass that are deep most of the year. These next few months, however, these brutes chase blueback herring and shad to the surface and into the backs of coves making them extremely visible to the fly fisherman. Approach with caution and start with a White Clouser minnow.
If that doesn’t work, head home and do yard work! The Striper is the South Carolina state fish for a reason; it’s strong, resilient, and beautiful. It’s a wonderfully diverse state to fish, now is the time to enjoy it! Pack the car, leave your fishing comfort zone, and try out some wonderful winter fisheries.

Focus on Fishing Down Time By Jiggin Jerry
W
orking our way through January into the month of February in the Lowcountry can be slow when it comes to inshore fishing. I have mentioned before that two of the primary species local anglers like to fish for during these months is Winter Spotted Seatrout and Sheepshead, but January and February being the two coldest months of the year in South Carolina, may result in some down time, especially if the water temperature reaches the low 40’s. This could cause fish kills and will also force fish to move out to deeper water, making it hard, if not impossible, to fish. So, when I cannot fish, what do I do during this down time? Fishing also has other chores to attend to, and some of them, should be maintaining your fishing reels and rods, especially after a long season of use. Please allow me to share some of my methods that I use to maintain my reels and rods during the slow season. First, let’s start with a few items you will need to help with this task. You will need a spray bottle of glass cleaner. This works great because it dries quickly, is not acidic and will easily remove salt and grime off of your fishing rods and reels (exterior use only). You will also need some cotton rags. Soft cotton rags are not abrasive and polish rods and reels with ease. You will also need a small set of mechanic screwdrivers, a small adjustable wrench, a jar of reel oil and a tube of grease. I personally recommend White Lithium Grease but not out of an aerosol can. Lithium Grease out of an aerosol can will also have an acetone in them and may damage your fishing reel. White Lithium Grease from a tube does not contain an aerosol or acetone. You can find this grease at your local auto parts stores. A brand I commonly use is Permatex. Why do I recommend White Lithium Grease? Because it not only lubricates but it is completely water resistant, especially to saltwater. It also helps protect aluminum from oxidizing, which is very common when fishing in saltwater. Regular grease will not accomplish this. Most anglers will fish with a spinning reel, but there are also a number of anglers that will fish with bait cast reels as well. If you have the original documentation for your reel, they may include a breakdown schematic. If so, reviewing the schematic to familiarize yourself with the reel’s components may help in its maintenance. Let’s start. For a simple maintenance, take your glass cleaner and spray your

reel down thoroughly. Then take your soft cotton rag and wipe your reel down all over, removing the dust, sand and dirt from the reel. It should stick to your rag easily and a glass cleaner containing ammonia should evaporate quickly. Next remove the spool from the reel. This will expose the oscillation shaft, which is the shaft that moves up and down with the spool when reeling. This is where you will want to apply a small drop of oil first. After applying the oil, turn the handle on your reel, allowing the oscillation shaft to move up and down and spread the oil evenly. Next take a small amount of grease and apply it to the shaft and repeat turning the handle on your reel. Next remove the handle from your reel. For some spinning reels, the handle will screw into the reel directly. You can remove these handles by turning the handle backwards, which will cause the handle to unscrew. The opposite side of the reel should have a small cap screwed in. Remove the small cap. After the handle is removed and the cap is removed, this should expose either the main bushings or ball bearings. Place a small drop of oil in both sides, then apply a small drop of grease on both sides. Reinstall your cap and your handle and then turn the reel handle for a few minutes, allowing the oil and grease to cover and coat the bushings or bearings. Other spinning reels may have a handle that inserts through the reel with a screw on the opposite side. These handles will come off by unscrewing the cap and screw on the other side of the handle. If you believe you are mechanically inclined and would like to take it a step further, you may refer to your reel’s schematic and remove the side plate from the reel, exposing the gears. You may then apply a small amount of oil then a small amount of grease to the gears. Then reinstall your side plate and other parts that had to be removed in order to go this far, if any, it depends on your reel. There are many bait cast reels, and most of them are designed differently, but all of them should allow access to the spool and spool bearings. For instance, Garcia 6600 Series have three screws on the handle side of the bait caster, once loosened, it allows you to remove the whole gear box from the main frame, which will also allow you to remove the spool out of the reel. This will expose the bushings or bearings on the spool that will need to be oiled and greased. It would be entirely up to you to find out how to access these components of your model reels. Fishing rods are a lot easier to maintain. Simply take a soft cotton rag and some soapy water and scrub your rod down thoroughly, then rinse your rod under clean, cold water, then dry your rod down evenly. Occasionally, I go the extra step of spraying my rod down with glass cleaner and polishing it with a nice soft, dry cotton cloth. Before you know it, you are looking at your shiny rods and your clean, sparkly fishing reels and filled yourself with a sense of accomplishment, but at the same time you find yourself peeking out the window, checking out the weather, and then you realize you just made yourself miss the water even more! The Seafood Corner By Kyle Kryske Flounder
T
his month I am going to talk about cooking another popular and delicious fish, flounder. Now if you are like me you might only catch a few a year, if you’re lucky. Hopefully you have a nice secret spot or know how to gig at night. If you don’t have great flounder catching skills your local seafood purveyor will readily have them available year round. Flounder can be prepared numerous ways but today I’m going to focus on preparing the fish once it’s filleted. Once you have your fresh caught or store bought flounde the first step is remove the head. Just follow the lines on the flounder as your guide. Next remove the guts and scale it well. From this point you can cook a flounder whole if that’s how you want to prepare it. Take your whole, cleaned fish and fillet it. Follow the lateral line, which is easiest for a novice or you can take off both fillets and leave them intact. Either way is fine. Whichever method you use just do both sides of the fish. The fillets from the bottom tend to be a bit smaller than the top side. Flounder skin is delicious cooked but for this dish we are going to remove it. You technically don’t need to scale it if you are taking off the skin but it’s easier when filleting it. Skin it like you would any other fish. On both sides of a flounder you will get 2 fillets each (a big fillet and a small fillet). Next cut the middle bony section of the flounder out where the lateral line is. The smaller fillet has a little bony section at the top. Just feel your fillets well because no one likes eating bones. Reserve the fillets. From this point they can be prepared any way you like. Today I’m am preparing a simple crab stuffed flounder. Now for the stuffing get a bowl, Ritz crackers or panko bread crumbs, Dukes mayonnaise, juice of 1 lemon, Old bay, 1 egg yolk, cayenne pepper, Worcestershire, and 1LB crab
meat. If you want to use fresh blue crabs go for it but if not you can get a wide variety of canned crab that is delicious. First step is squeezing all the juice out of the crabmeat and picking out the visible shell fragments. Next add to a bowl with all the other ingredients. Mix well and reserve. Divide your mixture into 4-5 ounce balls (about the size of a lime). This recipe makes about 4-6 servings. Now get your Flounder fillets and wrap the fish around the ball. Generally 2 small fillets will wrap around a ball or 1 big fillet per ball. Use bamboo skewers to hold the fish in place and make an X with the skewers to make sure the ends don’t unravel. Season the outside with salt and pepper. Make a small divot in the stuffing and add a pat of butter on top and finish with a light dusting of paprika. Place the fish in a baking dish where the fish isn’t touching. In a small bowl mix equal parts water and white wine and pour in the bottom of the baking dish. The liquid should come up between 1/4 -1/3 way up the fish. Bake at 375°F for about 10-15 minutes depending on your oven. The top should be golden brown. A way to tell if the stuffing is hot is to remove a skewer and feel it in the middle (it should be warm). I like to finish it with Beurre Blanc (lemon butter sauce). Enjoy! Lowcountry Kayak Fishing
G
etting skunked. It’s happened to all of us, and nobody likes it. The only thing worse than getting skunked is getting skunked over and over again. Not long ago, that was me. I moved to the Lowcountry just under three years ago and I couldn’t wait to jump into a kayak and start hauling in my share of redfish, spotted seatrout, flounder, and other inshore species. I’d heard stories of the redfish’s powerful fight and spotted seatrout’s formidable fangs, and having spent most of my fishing life in freshwater targeting bass and trout I was ready for a new challenge. I cobbled some equipment together, borrowed one of my brother’s kayaks, and hit the water. However, my enthusiasm soon took a huge hit when I found that catching these fish wasn’t as simple as I expected. I figured “I’ll soak some cut bait around a bend and the fish will find it”. Time after time I’d go out and come home empty handed.
I found that catching these fish wasn’t as simple as I expected. The skunk was on - bad - and man was it frustrating. Occasionally I’d pick off a lucky trout or flounder on soft plastics, but I was getting zero redfish and wondering to myself what I was doing wrong and why I couldn’t catch fish on a regular basis. This was supposed to be easy pickins. That grind lasted the better part of a year, and I was about to start looking for a new weekend hobby. Then I had a bit of a revelation. Beating the grassline with the same bait and lures over and over again wasn’t getting me better results. I realized I needed to get smarter, not fish harder. I needed to

grow. So my goal shifted to becoming a student of inshore saltwater fishing. My tactic was to soak up as much knowledge as possible. I read articles and posts, observed fishing partners, talked to other anglers, and pieced together bits and pieces until it slowly started to come together for me. Stepping back from it all, you realize how much information must be understood and processed; tide, water movement, structure, wind, equipment, knots, lure placement, and presentation just to name a few. Simple things started to help me in big ways. Basics such as retrieving your artificial with the current to mimic bait movement, understanding different types of structure and how to fish it, knowing the seasonality of bait in our local waterways, and how water temp affects fish depth - these were all small steps forward for me and spurred my growth as an angler. One tactic I continue to use and suggest to everyone is to take notes about places I’ve fished and what was successful - noting tide, temp, time, bait, and other conditions relevant to the spot. Slowly but surely success started to follow. I soon went from picking off an occasional fish to catching fish on almost every trip. Now, I’m still no pro and will suffer through the occasional goose egg here and there but not nearly as much as before. Needless to say, inshore kayak fishing is much more fun for me than it was when I first started. The key was getting hungry to learn more about the sport and then taking real steps to make it happen. I still chat it up with my fellow anglers, read as much as I can, and take notes about my trips because I know there’s so much more to learn. Here’s hoping your next trip out is skunk free! I am often asked when is the best time to plant fruiting plants. My answer is usually the same; the best time is 20 years ago or today. The second best time to plant is during the winter months. Plants are dormant, and can be easily shipped and planted with no stress on the plant because there is not a lot of maintenance once the plant or tree has been planted. Simply dig a good hole, water thoroughly
at planting, and take the rest of the winter off. Even though there are no signs of growth above ground, the root systems will have time to get adjusted to their new location and begin to initiate new root growth. There are plenty of advantages of growing your own edibles. First of all, you know what has been done over the course of the growing season from a chemical stand point. Second, the fruit just taste
better coming out of your home orchard versus buying fruit from the grocers that have little to no flavors. n January the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries submitted an application to NOAA Fisheries for an exempted fishing permit (EFP). NOAA Fisheries issues these permits to authorize activities, which would otherwise be prohibited by federal fishery regulations, for limited testing, data collection, exploratory fishing and other purposes. NOAA Fisheries invited the Gulf states to apply for EFPs to lead reef fish management activities in the Gulf of Mexico. LDWF’s proposed EFP study would test a state-based management approach that would allow recreational harvest of red snapper in both state and federal waters off Louisiana during seasons set by the state. LDWF would monitor landings through Louisiana’s existing recreational landings data collection program (LA Creel) and track fishing at oil and gas platforms, artificial reefs, and natural bottom habitat. Participants would also have the option to test new, voluntary electronic reporting methods. Seasons would be closed when landings approach or reach Louisiana’s recreational quota. Anyone with a Louisiana Saltwater Fishing License and a Recreational Offshore Fishing Permit (ROLP) would be eligible to participate in the study. Participants would be required to indicate their preference to participate in the study via their ROLP account, provide vessel registration information (per federal requirements), and abide by the federal minimum size limit (currently 16 inches) and two fish bag limit.

Telling Good Fish Stories By Matt Jorn

“W
hat did you catch today?” It is a question asked at every marina, boat ramp and backyard dock in the world every day of the fishing calendar. This is your chance to hold up your catch, your fillet bag or your digital camera. It is a chance to reveal (or conceal) details regarding where and how you snared your prey. It is also the chance to spin a wonderful tale of the leviathan that you fought for hours, had right next to the boat, and locked eyes with only to have it spit the hook/break the leader/get caught on the props/ pull you overboard… we’ve all been there! Even the master angler and author Ernest Hemingway’s beloved “The Old Man and the Sea” is a fish tale, featuring the angler we all wish we were losing the fish we all wish we could catch.
The craft of embellishing your catch is a time-honored tradition; however as the curator of the FishingNosara Costa Rica Fishing Report, I take umbrage with the 21st century version of the fish story. For the last seven years, I have documented every one of the 2,000plus trips run by the Nosara, Costa Rica based fishing team. Each report is meticulously checked for accuracy, including the angler’s names, trip date, fish caught, and (most importantly) photographs of the catches. I also encourage my clients to offer their own stories from the fishing experience. In December 2017, we hosted Laura and Michael Price. Here’s what Laura wrote: “My husband and I went out today on the Explorer. We had an AMAZING time!!! We ended the day with six mahi mahi caught with one mahi mahi, one tuna and one marlin getting away. Phenomenal crew! We loved every minute of it!” Here is another example, this time from angler Kevin Bahr: “We went with Capt. William and his mate Johnny. They were very professional and ready to ensure we had a successful outing on May 12. The weather was pretty sketchy, but we were able to locate the fish and ended up with a freezer full of ahi and mahi mahi. We cut our day short due to the weather, but our crew was willing to stay out longer if we wanted to. Despite the weather, it was a great day!” Everyone knows that the Internet is a place where the line between fact and fiction is often blurry; from politics, to sports, to fishing—it is not always easy to separate the truth, from an opinion, from a sales pitch. For instance, a quick glance at a competing Central American fishing charter’s report looks like this: Dec 27, 3 sailfish, 6 mahi-mahi, 1 marlin. Dec 28, 7 sailfish, 2 marlin. Dec 29, 5 mahi-mahi, 3 yellowfin tuna, 1 sailfish. Who is this helping? Why no details, no photos? Is this for search engines, the illiterate, or the lazy? I put it to all anglers in the 21st century posting online: Tell me a good fish story or log-off.

A year later, we’re fully convinced this super-stable, lightweight fishing machine is worth the praise. “I’m thrilled with its performance,” said Coastal Angler’s Tom Schlichter. “I’ve fished it from Long Island, N.Y. to the Florida Keys in everything from mangroves to bulrushes and boulder fields, and it’s come through unscathed.” At 12’6”x40” the FishSUP FS126 is both spacious and tough enough to work hardened shorelines. Speargun Basics
L
ike enthusiasts of any sport, if you stay with spearfishing long enough, you become intimately familiar with every detail of your equipment. Here’s an overview of what a newbie might want to know before buying that first speargun. Most spearguns are powered by bands, normally between one and three bands. There are two main types. The American style is recognized by the wood stock and is durable, sturdy and easy to load. The Eurogun style has a tubular shaped barrel, rear handle, and a thinner shaft well suited for freediving and smaller fish. In either case, spearguns are equipped with a trigger mechanism. The back end of the shaft engages into the trigger mechanism. Once the bands are loaded, the trigger is pulled and the shaft flies out due to the pulling load of the bands. You do not want to overload a gun by putting more bands than what it’s designed for as it could make the gun inaccurate or unsafe. Most spearguns now include a reel. This is especially needed if freediving and/or spearing larger fish, so the gun is not yanked out of your hands. If spearing a very large fish such as a tuna, which could spool your line in a matter of seconds, a line and float are required so the diver can pull it in from the surface. Shafts come in different lengths and diameters to match the gun, and spearos look for the perfect shaft—one that will not bend, not rust, fly straight in the water, and with a barb that will hold the fish securely. It’s wise to always carry a spare shaft or two on the boat, in case a shaft gets bent or lost. Like shafts, the bands are also replaced periodically, and it’s a good idea to carry spares in case one breaks. When bands get old, they start to get crack lines, or the wishbones can begin to fray, so it’s best to replace them before one snaps. There’s a wider variety of speargun brands than ever on the
market. These include: Wong, AB Biller, Riffe, Hammerhead, Cressi, SEAC, Mares, Rob Allen, Koah, Mako, JBL and more. If you want help selecting your first gun, see if you can find a mentor to help you select one that matches local conditions. Dive shops that specialize in spearfishing can also help. These include Austin’s in Miami, Fla.; Freedivers in Palm Beach, Fla.; James & Josephs in San Diego, Cali.; Freedive Shop in Sacramento, Cali.; and others.
