Charleston Fishing Forecast for December By Captain Mark Phelps
I
would like to wish everyone a happy holiday season it’s hard to believe it’s the end of the year already. With all the hustle and bustle the end of the year brings, many forget how great the fishing can be. The weather is cooler but the redfish and trout bite can be excellent. The first thing you notice when fishing in December is how peaceful it is on the water. You won’t find any jet skis or many pleasure riders. The majority of the boats are put up for the winter. Mostly what you will find are friendly fellow fisherman. Fishing in December means you should concentrate on two things: redfish and sea trout. The inshore waters of Charleston
David with a great winter redfish on fly rod. will be loaded with large schools of both species. The cold weather will have the fish in large schools looking for protection from dolphins and working together to find food. That means you might have to move around to find the large schools or wait a while in your favorite spot until a school comes to you. Either way, you will be in for some fast action when you find them. Most of the bait will be gone and the fish are hungry for almost any artificial lure or fly you place in their path. Look for redfish to be in very shallow water trying to find food and stay warm. Pole or troll down a shallow flat looking for the disturbance or gold flashes. It is not

uncommon to see more than 100 fish in a school this time of the year. The water will be very clear and easy to see on a sunny day. You must be quiet and have polarized glasses to help you see in the water. The trout will move from place to place depending on the water temperature. After a cold front you might find them in a 10-20 foot hole. However, a warm afternoon will have them in 2 feet of water along the grass. Midday high tides or late afternoon incoming tides can be the best for trout. Remember to slow down your retrieve of all lures this time of the year. The fish will be moving and reacting more slowly in the colder water. A great way to spend the day

Fishing Forecast
D
ecember finds Lowcountry anglers not only concentrating on fishing techniques, but honing their amateur weatherman skills as well. During December the fishing in Charleston is all about the water temperature. As long as the Hal with 20” water temp stays above the magic 60 degree sheephead mark, fishing will remain productive. The trout and redfish bite will still be on around the pier, but the fish will become more sluggish as the water cools. Live bait will work best for these fish, but artificial jigs will produce if fished with a slower retrieve. Mud minnows will be an easily accessible live bait option as finger mullet and shrimp become harder to find during the winter. Don with 9 lb. The winter sheepshead started showing sheephead up in November and typically hangs around until February or March. As the water cools many pier anglers shift from fiddler crabs to fresh mussels when targeting large sheeps. Make a small hole in the shell and hide the hook inside for the best chance of landing one when the shell gets crushed. Owner size 2 or 4 mosquito hooks are commonly used by pier anglers with great results. Other migratory species such as bluefish will be well on their way south, but schools migrating from off the New England coast will pass through. Make sure to keep an eye on the water temperature and take advantage of some good fishing before Old Man Winter takes hold. Back by popular demand this year is the Winter Sheepshead Challenge. From December 1 – February 28 the pier is looking for you to test your skills at landing the elusive convicts. The largest 3 by weight will win gift cards to Haddrell’s Point. Fish must be of legal size and caught during normal business hours in order to be weighed into the challenge. Good luck! Depending on which way you decide to fry your fish (a pan or portable fryer) there can be several factors to consider. If you’re using a portable fryer heat the oil to 350 degrees. I personally like to put the fish in buttermilk first and then coat in your desired breading. Carefully start by putting the fish into the oil, head first. Cooking times vary depending on the size of the fish. Generally a 1.5 to 2 pound fish will take approximately 5 to 7 minutes. Carefully remove from oil and place on a platter lined with paper towels. Pull back a small piece to see if the fish is done. It should come off clean and white in color. Fried fish will keep cooking once taken off the heat so don’t cook the crap out of it. If you’re using a larger whole fish I would suggest baking it rather than frying it. Serve with desired sides and sauces. Enjoy! A more detailed recipe is available online.

scale them first, then gut the fish and clean the cavity well. I usually keep the fins attached but that’s a personal preference. Some will remove the fins (dorsal, pectoral, anal, pelvic and caudal) and even the head. Do whatever you feel comfortable with. There are several ways whole fish can be prepared. Some of the more common ways would be grilled, fried, and baked. Today we will be focusing on preparing and executing the fried portion. First thing is get your scaled and cleaned fish and make a few slits at a 45 degree angle starting behind the pectoral fin. Make the slits about 1.5 inches apart and stop before the tail. If you choose to leave the dorsal fin intact be cautious of the sharp spines. Repeat on both sides and reserve fish. Get a bowl or a pan where you can completely submerge the fish in buttermilk. Then get a baking sheet with sides and add some flour to the bottom of it. Take your whole fish from the buttermilk and put it in the flour. Then add more flour on top and coat until completely covered.

ottom fishing off the coast of Charleston can bring up a wide variety of fish. With several fish closing soon like grouper and the ones you can’t keep like American Red Snapper, there are others that are consistently available. Black Sea Bass, Vermillion Snapper, several species of porgy, grunts, triggerfish, and many more are usually available all year. I’m mainly going to concentrate on Black Sea Bass and Vermillion Snapper whole. Everyone who goes out fishing off the coast know that even if you catch a minimum size sea bass or snapper that the fillet is the size of a fish stick. However, if you cook the fish whole you can get something that looks more like a meal. I generally try to find ones that are about 15-16 inches or roughly 1.5-2.5 pounds. The first step is preparing your fish. When you return from fishing take your desired whole fish and

ecember is here and the year is about over. Most people have put their boats up for the winter but they are missing out on some really good inshore and reef fishing this month. Charleston usually does not have the severe cold temperatures that folks up north have to deal with. The live bait in the creeks is gone in the shallows but you can catch bait in deeper waters or buy it from a tackle store such as Haddrell’s or Charleston Angler. December is when I target sheepshead more than other species using fiddlers or fresh oysters. I prefer to use fiddlers because using oysters is a messy and slow rebaiting process and there is no way to cast an oyster on a hook without it coming off. Sheepshead fishing is best done around the lower waters, a perfect trip would be around 2 hours before low and 2 hours on the rising. Fish any structure in the water. A single piling can hold fish if there is growth on the pilings. Clusters of pilings are usually better though. Rocks, concrete, trees, or anything in the water that has marine growth such as barnacles and oysters on them will hold fish. Catching sheepshead consistently on high tide is tough, although there are places we catch them but not as good as low tide. My inshore rig is a very short leader of 30 lb mono no more than 6-8 inches long. I use a 3/4 barrel weight tied to a swivel that is tied to the leader. My main line is 15-20 lb braided line on a 7 ft light action rod with a Penn 3000 series reel. The same areas that hold sheepshead will also have red and black drum on them most of the time. Inshore in December is one of the best months for working artificials for reds and trout. Work your baits or lures really slow though. The waters are usually much clearer than in the summer so scale down the leader and tackle. The more natural a presentation you give, the better chance you will land a fish. I fish the higher tides with floats, grubs, Trout Tricks or other baits and target sheepshead on low tide. Watch the weather forecast for fronts coming in that could change conditions quickly. Always let someone on land know the area you are fishing and about what time you expect to return. Fishing in the winter months can be rewarding but there are not as many other boaters on the water to assist you should something happen. Reef fishing is also productive this month on days the winds are calm. I do not go to the reefs unless the winds are less than 10 mph in the winter. Riding the ocean and getting salt spray feels good in August but not so much in the winter. Mornings are usually calmest and tide stage does not seem to matter out there as much as inshore. The same gear and baits used inshore will work out there but we normally rig a couple of bigger rods with large cut baits for bull reds. Capt. Focus on Fishing Winter Seatrout By Jiggin Jerry
D
ecember, the last month of the year, the month that brings us our first day of Winter, and during this month in the Lowcountry, you will find brisk outdoor temperatures and continuously lowering water temperatures. But, for experienced Lowcountry inshore anglers, this means big Winter Seatrout. This is one of the months in the Lowcountry when anglers again fire up artificial lures. After all, there’s nothing like the excitement of tricking a small to Gator-sized Spotted Seatrout into striking your artificial bait after you have vigorously casted, twitched, jerked and reeled in with every method you know to make your fake bait look real and alive. It really brings a sense of accomplishment to the angler when a successful strike, fight and landing of a fish takes place. I have been asked on more than one occasion by fishermen whether or not Seatrout will bite year-round. In the Lowcountry, the answer is yes! There are schools of Seatrout that will migrate, but there are other schools that will stay behind in the harbors, deeper rivers, and on sunny days, shallow creeks. Some large schools of Spotted Seatrout will be made up of young, unseasoned Trout, who just don’t know any better yet and stay behind because they have not learned their migration patterns. This may make a great afternoon of fishing for an angler, but for these younger schools of Trout, if the water temperature drops too low during the Winter, this could cause a devastating fish kill for this species in the vicinity. But, what most anglers are really looking for is a Gator Trout. No, a Gator Trout does not look like an Alligator. It is a nickname a Trout gets when it exceeds around 22 inches long and becomes thick around the mid-body and it has dark-

DECEMBER 2017
Well, the answer is yes and no. You will use similar artificials that you have used during warmer seasons. Some of these artificials will be used more than others, like artificial Shrimp, Paddle Tail Grubs and Curly Tail Grubs. The colors to be used will be up to the angler and where they are fishing. Some locations, Trout prefer golds, reds and browns, ened, yellowish coloring in its mouth. These Gator Trout will stay behind. They usually do not school together. They will be loners, moving slowly along the bottom, acting territorial toward others, trying to make sure that they are the ones that obtain the hard-to-come-by meals that they are lurking for. But, please don’t get me wrong, this does not mean you will not find four, five or six big Trout in the same vicinity. After all, if seasoned, adult Trout have annually visited a location where in the past they have found food through the Winter successfully, they will gather together in that area but create their own separate space and each individual Trout will come and go as it pleases. After all, Trout are creatures of habit. Many anglers, including myself, have experienced going to one familiar Trout spot and casting for an hour, then all of a sudden landing a 21- to 23-inch Trout, then casting the same spot for another half hour and finding nothing, but after moving one-half mile away to your next secret hole, finding three of them at that size. But, now that you know what to expect, a question would be—do we fish for them the same way we do in the Spring or Summer?
where other locations, Trout like purples, silvers and white. The trick will be to fish closer to the bottom. Slow down your retrieve, accompanied by slow jigging or twitching in short strokes. This is necessary due to the decrease in water temperature, the cooler the water, the slower and less, aggressive the Trout become, as far as their feeding habits. But, man, after setting the hook on one, they really let loose. It’s like someone took a needle full of adrenaline and shot them up! Their headshake is vigorous. They will roll. They will jump. They will skip across the top of the water. Anything to spit that hook loose. So, this Winter, don’t think because it’s cold outside and Jack Frost is nipping at your nose that fishing is done for the year. If you bundle up, stock up on your lures, grab a rod and head out on the water to try to target yourself one of those Gators, you might just land a holiday gift that you can only give yourself. Like I always say, good luck out there and have fun fishing! To view some fishing adventures, go to my “Fishing with Jiggin’ Jerry” Channel on YouTube or go to www.jigginjerry.net.

o on ahead and take some leave from work for that holiday season. And since you’ve got the free time, go shopping… for red drum!! Outside of boats and tackle, material items are overrated anyways. Instead, give your family and friends the gift of a fun fishing trip. Red drums aren’t as active with the cooler temperatures, but on a bright sunny day they’ll be in search for food. Start at daybreak preferably with an incoming tide. Get a cozy spot out on the pier diamond. Rig up some shrimp on a bottom rig. Then, cast, sit, and relax. When they strike, smaller red drum will fight with sporadic motions and jerky pulls, whereas bigger “bull reds” have a more consistent solid pull in one direction. Once landed, one can see their 8 CHARLESTON

Carolina Flyfisher Pond Hopping For Big Fun By Scotty Davis
I
t seems everywhere in America, you are never more than a few minutes from a pond full of fish. Neighborhoods, parks, even some shopping centers have ponds within easy reach and sites like Google Earth will open up every piece of water, so start exploring. Then, grab a 5-6 weight fly rod and a small box of flies and get ready to start enjoying your lunch breaks again. Flies should be simple, effective, and able to reach all depths of the water column. Here’s what we recommend. Topwater, topwater, we love you topwater. There is really no better experience than a feisty bluegill or a acrobatic largemouth smashing a fly resting on the surface. These flies can range from the small foam spiders, crickets, to intricate baby ducks spun from deer hair but I’ve found that the smaller to mid-sized offerings work best (sz 4-8). Both
hard and soft foam poppers are available and I like each in different scenarios. If I am fishing under trees or other brush, I prefer the louder splash of a hard popper. Representing something that fell out of the tree, this splash will attract nearby predators instantly. If the fish are more pressured or the water has little structure on the banks, i’ll use a soft popper that spooks less fish. Vary your retrieve until you find what the fish prefer... some days they like it ripped across the surface quickly and other days, they wont attack until all movement is stopped. While generally more productive early and late in the day, topwater is where i like to start- its just more fun seeing and hearing it all happen. No discussion about flies would be worthy without mentioning the famed Wooly Bugger. Designed to imitate a hellgramite nymph, the
bugger can be stripped or dead drifted with great results. The marabou feather tail pulsates underwater and is often irresistible. Olive, black, or white are my first choice, but any color could work. By varying the weight of the fly you can control its depth and sink rate. Many fish will hit as the fly drops so maintain a tight line and watch the line for any movement. Short erratic strips work well in the ponds with these streamer favorites. Clouser minnows are also very effective at reaching fish that are holding a little deeper. The lead eyes create a jiggy action to the fly when stripped and also allow the hook point to remain up (to reduce snags). Tied in every conceivable color combination, i tend to stick with colors to mimic local prey items: olive/white for baby bass, rootbeer/orange for crawfish, etc. Here again, you can vary the eyes on the fly to control sink rate. Shorelines call for lightweight beadchain eyes, while heavy lead will help dredge up that lunker hanging at the drop off. Other useful flies include Pat’s rubberlegs and other small nymphs. Either fish them on
their own or suspend them off the hook bend of a topwater fly to not only up your chances, but the floater will help you detect strikes you might of missed while fishing subsurface. Don’t go overboard carrying a bunch of patterns with you, but rather have a few provern flies in different colors so you’ll be able to keep it quick and light. Even if you only have an hour or two, you can still enjoy catching a few fish on the fly...and they’re is no boat to wash! Scotty Davis Lowcountry Fly Shop lowcountryflyshop.com

here are several factors that cause cold numb feet during winter fishing. Lack of insulation layers and quality, too many socks causing constriction of blood flow, the wrong size footwear for winter application, and often overlooked, the proper ‘installation’ method of putting those items on in such a way that even the best gear can cause poor circulation. First, tight over-the-calf socks constrict blood flow. “Half-fold” the tops down the lower shin to allow better circulation. Secondly, pick footwear sizes for winter fishing and hunting that will give plenty of room for sock layers (and neoprene wader boot bottoms). Thirdly, use high quality merino wool sock layers with good loft. I’ve recently found Fits Brand socks (fitssock.com) and they contain a higher percentage merino wool than the competition, and they’re manufacturing process creates more loft. Loft equates to insulation. Use one liner sock like the Fits ‘Film’ liner and one thick merino wool sock. Finally, don’t hurriedly cram your feet into the boots. Make sure to bend your toes back and forth after putting on sock layers. Similarly, after the boots are on, walk around and bend the toe sections of the boots to loosen scrunched-up materials and layers inside the boots before lacing up. Following these simple steps will give your feet more blood flow and allow your feet to stay warmer longer. Tobin created TroutSupport.com - Tech Support for speckled trout and redfish anglers.

EXPERT ADVICE
Gifts for Anglers Choosing Sunglasses As A Gift DAVID MANEY, FOWLER’S SUNGLASSES
C
hoosing a pair of sunglasses as a gift for someone else can be a tricky endeavor. On the one hand you have your opinion of what you think they will like and then there’s the issue of the fit and their face shape that can make all the difference in the world in their overall happiness with the pair that you’ve selected. Obviously, the best way to ensure your selection is exactly what they’re looking for is to have them help you. Go to your favorite sunglass seller, and let your friend try numerous pairs on. Then, once you know their favorite, the task is easy and foolproof. But if you’re not able to put that together prior to a purchase, the next best alternative is to make sure the company you’re buying the sunglasses from has an honest, no-loophole return policy. Yes, save your receipt. I also recommend including a small note with the sunglasses saying: I hope these fit, and are what you wanted. The store name here said you can exchange them if you like. At Fowler’s, we make sure our customers have an easy and helpful exchange process. The right pair of sunglasses can be a gift that is appreciated for many, many years, and we make giving the perfect gift a little bit easier.
