hile mystic grouper can be caught year-round in the Bahamas, the winter months are our favorite time of year. Whenever a weather window presents itself, we point our bow east across the Florida Straights in search of these deep-water bottom dwellers. Mystics are one of the lesser-known grouper species, simply because anglers don’t fish deep enough to target them. Like all grouper, they are excellent to eat and usually weigh from 15 to 50 pounds, although they can grow much larger. It takes special gear to fish the 800- to 1,200-foot depths where we find mystics. Armed with Shimano Tiagra 80 WAs and Shimano Tiagra 50 WAs equipped with Hooker Electric Autostop drives, we string up 65- to 100-pound Power Pro braid on Crafty One Custom’s Deep Drop Rods. We begin by paying close attention to our Humminbird Solix sonar with CHIRP HD digital technology to locate bottom structure. We look for cones, holes, drop-offs, ledges and deep-water ridges. Once viable structure is located, we position the boat above it with engines out of gear to judge how wind and current will manipulate our drift. Then the

boat is repositioned up-current from the structure and the deep-drop rigs are readied. When targeting mystics, we use our www.ThreeBuoysFishing.com grouper deep-drop rigs made with three 8/0 VMC 3x Circle Hooks on 100-pound branch lines off of 12 feet of 150-pound main line. For bait, we prefer fresh-cut 8-inch strips of dolphin, tuna, wahoo or barracuda. Many deep-drop anglers claim, “no light, no bite,” but our experience has proven that, especially with mystics, we catch more and bigger fish without lights. We deploy two rods on opposite sides of the boat. Lead weights in the 10-pound range are the rule of thumb, but weight can be adjusted to the current. After the weights hit bottom, the reels are left in freespool to lay the rigs straight down on the bottom. The engines should be used to decrease the boat’s drift to a standstill, if possible. If the boat drifts, let out line to keep the rigs on bottom. When the rod tip bumps and shakes, resist the urge to lock up the drag and retrieve line. Wait a minute or two for additional fish to sense the commotion. They’ll often eat the remaining baits. When it’s time to strike, lift the reel’s drag to strike (pre-set to 20 pounds of drag) and slowly start your retrieve. Big mystic grouper put up quite a fight at first, and you might even think you’ve hung bottom. Be patient and slowly gain as must line as possible. When fish are about halfway up, their air bladders expand and create lift. They will begin to float your rig up to the surface. For more tips and tactics on deep-dropping and the tackle and rigs to get tight, see www.threebuoysfishing.com. Finding bait becomes more important than at any other time of year. Goebel likes to get out well before dawn in search of shad or herring flickering near the surface, especially when a big moon keeps baitfish active all night. Diving birds are also a dead giveaway. They are likely feeding on baitfish pushed by stripers from below. “A lot of times if there’s bait there, I won’t even worry about marking fish on the graph,” Goebel said. “I’ll just put out my lines and start fishing where the bait is.”

By Nick Carter

T

here aren’t many anglers willing to endure the frigid early morning temperatures of winter on a large reservoir. But for those who can handle a little discomfort, right now is the best time of year to hook up with the striper of a lifetime. Around the Southeast, in reservoirs where striped bass were introduced, falling water temperatures spur changes in behavior that make the largest fish in the lake susceptible to anglers. Those 30- to 50-pounders are feeding up right now. They’re storing up reserves that will take them through the spring spawn. “It’s trophy striper season,” said Shane Goebel, of Big Ol’ Fish Guiding Service. “The bigger fish are participating a little better. This time of year, we start going after those big ol’ hogs that are chasing the big baits.” The large summer schools broke up months ago. Stripers are spread out and on the move, following baitfish into the creek mouths and up into the backs of the creeks. Big fish move shallow when water temps hit the mid to low 50s on the lakes Goebel guides in the mountains of north Georgia and western North Carolina. It might take some searching to find them, but the rewards can be huge.

Because the stripers are continually moving with the bait, covering water is crucial. Goebel said to troll as many baits in as wide a spread as you can handle. Herring are great on lakes where they are present, but this time of year you should also work some big gizzard shad or trout into the spread. Sometimes it takes a big mouthful to convince big fish to eat. Goebel runs baits 30 to 40 feet behind planer boards. He’ll drop freelines 100 to 150 feet behind the boat. If the area where he finds bait isn’t too shallow, he’ll put a little bit of weight ahead of the baits on the inside boards to cover more water vertically. He slow trolls at about half a mile per hour. This is a pattern Goebel fishes all the way into May, when stripers have moved into a pre-spawn phase. It might not produce the numbers of fish that downlining into summer mega-schools will, but the fish are generally a lot bigger than those 5- to 10-pound summer schoolies. If catching an enormous striper sounds like fun, zip up your parka and get out on the lake. It’s trophy striper season. Check out Big Ol’ Fish Guiding Service at bigolfish.com.

f Costa Rica isn’t already on your bucket list, it should be. Famous for both inshore and offshore fishing, it’s also a country with incredible biodiversity and exciting eco-tourism opportunities. In short, there’s something for every sportsman and adventure seeker here. From a fishing perspective, the west coast of this Central American country is most favored with several significant cities and ports including Jaco, Quepos and, of course, Golfito. It’s Los Suenos, however, where

my wife, Felicia and I found outstanding action on a trip last April. We worked the inshore grounds, catching huge roosterfish, rainbow runners, grouper, jacks and even mahi. We also decked a big cubera snapper. Of course, we did have an edge. Coastal Angler’s very own Costa Rica inshore reporter Capt. Carlos Arguedas and his first-mate son, Christopher, were our charter crew. “This really is a terrific place to fish,” said Arguedas, “We have access to a lot of different spots ranging from very close to the marina to 50 miles away. The roosterfish action is unbelievable here but we also catch big cubera snapper, amberjack, groupers and huge red snappers, too.” Arguedas loves to take clients for roosterfish because they fight so hard, are found close to port, and grow big. He’s had a 90-pounder grace his deck. For these, he’ll slow troll live baits like blue runners, herring, sardines or bonita. All of these baits, impaled on size 8 circle hooks, also attract other large predators; so you never know what to expect when the rod doubles over. “Roosterfish are very impressive when you first see them,” said Arguedas. “They are exotic-looking with big dorsal rays, a huge mouth and striped flanks. They are stunning to see for the first time. They are also exceptionally strong. Fight a 20-pounder and you’ll think you have a 40-pounder at the end of the line. They jump, too, and shake their head, so remember to lower your rod tip when that fish comes up or you’ll tear the hook free.” Among the other big fish that hit the deck for Arguedas’ crew on a regular basis are goliath grouper that can top 400 pounds. These are targeted around local reefs. If you want to run offshore, sailfish, tuna and marlin abound within 10 miles of port. Dorado, sometimes topping 30 pounds, can be tempted within sight of the coast. Costa Rica’s tropical climate makes it a year-round destination. Most travelers prefer to visit during the dry season, which runs from December through April, but you’ll find lighter crowds and lower travel prices during the “green” or rainy season from May to November. Whenever you visit, it really helps to work with a travel pro that deals frequently with Costa Rica to customize a trip here. Blue Water Sportfishing Charters (http://bluewatersportfishingcharters.com) specializes in setting up trips to Los Suenos. They can put you in the right place at the right time for the fish you want to catch, sights you want to see or adventures you want to experience. They’ll also book you with Capt. Carlos—or you can contact him yourself at www.wingmancr.com.

he first time I saw someone spearfishing, I was intrigued and wondered out loud how hard it would be to load a speargun. A friend heard me and said, “I’m sure you can do it. It’s probably more about technique than brute strength.” He was right. It’s not uncommon to struggle to load your first speargun, and you might suspect they made the bands too short. If you give it some time and use the right technique, it will become easy. First, some safety tips: 1) Never load a speargun out of the water. 2) Keep the safety on until you intend to shoot a fish. 3) Even with the safety on, treat it like a loaded weapon, never let the tip point at anyone. 4) Use tip protectors when not in use, so you don’t scratch anything. Some spearguns are loaded by resting the butt of the gun on your hip and pulling the bands toward the shaft notches. Others are loaded by resting the butt high on the middle of the chest and pulling the bands toward your sternum. Hip-loading spearguns are commonly used by scuba divers, as chest loading can be difficult when wearing a buoyancy compensator vest. Freedivers are less constricted by gear, so they normally use chest-loading spearguns. These have longer range because the shaft tabs sit closer to the butt of the gun. Now, some loading tips: 1) Wear gloves and wetsuit to prevent slips, scrapes or bruising. Some wetsuits have a loading pad built into the chest. 2) Don’t look down and hunch over when loading the bands. Push forward with your chest and pull the band swiftly with your arms, so the shaft tabs are pushed forward to meet the incoming

band. 3) Use a loading tab (if using a wood gun). This simple device makes things much easier by allowing you to first hip load the band to the loading tab and then raise the butt to your chest for the final pull. Although it’s a two-step process, it can be done quickly and will feel much easier. 4) If your bands are still too hard to load, use three longer bands. 5) Work out, lift weights, work on core and upper body. Try bench presses, seated rows, bent over rows, pushups and pull-ups. Bands and dumbbells can be incorporated into your workout routine, whether at the gym or home. If you want to see a band loading video, check out Coastal Angler online. And remember—you can accomplish anything you set your mind to! very blade-handy angler has their own techniques and tricks for peeling the perfect fillet off a fish. But anyone who has spent enough time around a cutting board knows the perfect way to fillet is a combination of three crucial elements: technique, tools and practice. Whether it’s a 15-pound red snapper or a 6-ounce bream, the basics of filleting a fish are the same. The idea is to remove the meat along the fish’s flanks, while leaving behind the head, bones and guts. Step 1: Make a vertical cut just behind the fish’s gill plate and pectoral fin. This cut should go all the way down to the bone and

CANGL_FIL1-FIL4.indd 2

extend from back to belly. Step 2: Run the blade from the first cut all the way down the top of the fish, along the backbone to the tail, making a shallow incision as close to the backbone as you can get it. Step 3: Using that long cut along the backbone, utilize smooth, light strokes to work the fillet away from the bones moving from the back to the belly. The other hand can be used to peel back the meat as you go. Cut around the ribcage when you arrive at it. Step 4: With step 3 completed, you should have a beautiful skinon fillet. To remove the skin, place the fillet on the board skin side down. Start from the tail and insert the knife through the meat down to the skin, leaving a tab of meat and skin at the tail to hold onto. Turn the knife horizontal and run the blade up the skin to remove the meat. Step 5: Use tweezers to pick out any pin bones left in the fillet. The technique seems simple enough, but if you don’t have good, sharp, flexible knives that are sized correctly for the fish on the board, you’re going to make a mess out of your fillets. Havalon has come up with an all-in-one solution for this issue with its Talon system. With five styles of high-quality blades that all fit on the same handle, switching from a 7-inch blade down to a 5-incher or even down to a 3.5-inch utility blade is as easy as pressing a button with their Quik-Change II blade replacement system. The blades can be resharpened as well as replaced to make sure they are razor sharp when you need them. Also, with a handle that opens up, clean-up is both thorough and easy with the Havalon Talon system. Rinse your tools down and roll them up in the included canvas kit so they’ll be ready the next time you need them. And next time should be soon, because practice is the final and most important element in the perfect way to fillet. Go fishing enough, and you’ll be peeling off perfect fillets for the table in no time. Check out the Havalon Talon System at www.havalon.com.

Charleston’s Fishing Forecast for January By Captian Mark Phelpss

I

want to wish everyone a happy new year. May this be a year of bent rods to you all! Now that all the holiday festivities are over, it’s time to think about fishing again. There is no better time than January to sight fish for redfish on the flats in and around the Charleston area. We are in the heart of winter here so the water can be cold but very clear. Inshore fishing will mostly consist of sight fishing for redfish. There are several things you can look for to help you catch fish this month. The redfish are in large schools of 100-200 fish per school. These fish will be found in shallow warmer water, and since the water is so clear, you will be able to see the fish very well. I typically look for calm, warm days in January when the tide is low in the mid morning or early afternoon. This allows for the dark mud flats to warm up in the sun for a few hours. The warmer water draws the redfish to the very shallow areas and also puts them in the mood to eat something. Small plastic lures or flies work very well. There is very little bait in the water this time of the year so redfish will eat a wide variety of artificial lures. One important thing to remember is the large schools of fish can spook easily, so be very quiet when approaching the school and make long casts to the fish so as not to spook them. If you give them room to move around they will stay happy and continue to eat your offering.

Another important thing to remember is that cold water will slow the fish down. You want to work your bait or fly very slowly to give the fish time to eat it. They will not run down bait like they did in the fall because the water temperature has them moving more slowly. If you think you are fishing slowly, slow down more. Follow these tips and you will find some excellent and exciting sight fishing. A great way to spend the day on the water is to book one of the area’s great guides. Having fished in Charleston for almost twenty four years, I am extremely knowledgeable and experienced in this area. As owner and operator of Shore Thang Charters, I would love to share my expertise with you on the water. Please email me at ShoreThangCharter@hotmail.com, check out my web page, www. anuary is one of those months that can produce some quality fishing days when Mother Nature decides to cooperate. Last year the winter was tough on the trout population, but they appear to be coming back strong around the pier. If mild temperatures prevail this winter, the trout action seen in November and December should carry over into January. Target trout during the last two hours of the outgoing tide and the first two hours of the incoming. Artificials like Billy Bay, Vudu, ZMan, and Bass Assassin are all popular among trout fishermen. Red drum will still be active at times so target them along the grass line or the large flat adjacent to the pier. Cut mullet or artificial grubs are the ticket to catching reds if they’re biting during the winter. Some sheepshead will move to deeper water as it gets colder, but there’s also a resident population that typically hangs around the pilings and can be caught year round. During the winter months, pier anglers have better luck with clams or barnacles than fiddler crabs, but they still produce if you have the patience to sort through some small ones. The winter months are typically when we see some of the largest sheepshead caught each year. It is not uncommon to see catches in the 7 – 10 pound range with some pushing 12 pounds or more caught between November and March. If you like fishing for convicts this is the time of year for you. Catch sheepshead and maybe win some prizes! The Mount Pleasant Pier invites anglers to test their skills in the Winter Sheepshead Challenge from December 1st to February 28th. Prizes will be awarded for the 3 largest sheepshead by weight. Stop by the River Watch Café and Gift shop on the pier for more details and to weigh your fish. Fish must be of legal size and caught from the Mount Pleasant Pier. Good luck! Chris Pounder, CPRP Manager | Mount Pleasant Pier (843) 762-9946 or visit www.charlestoncountparks.com

ver the course of four days beginning on October 3rd, Folly Beach had the best King Mackerel run in the entire history of the pier. A total of 24 kings were decked, far exceeding the number of kings caught at any other east coast pier for the week. In recent years, Folly has been notorious for very low catch rates of kings, but these four days saw the most intense king action and more than made up for the slow years. Many anglers had the opportunity to catch their first king from a pier, and several even caught their daily limit of kings, which up until now was practically unheard of on the Folly Pier. The largest king was decked by Stephen Baum and weighed well in excess of 30 pounds!

e are excited to introduce to our readers the first in a series of interviews with major local Charleston business leaders from the fishing, boating and outdoor industries. We don’t have a specific format our goal is to get a sense of the main people behind the businesses, their priorities and a general direction they are taking their company. We hope you enjoy reading this new addition to our local magazine. This month we sat down with David Pfeiffer, President of Shimano North America Fishing, Inc. David is originally from Michigan where he spent his formative years; he started fishing at three years of age and hasn’t stopped. David graduated from the University of Michigan and after a short stint in Alaska, where he worked as a guide but wanted to find work in the lodging or fishing business which didn’t work out. He ended up on a college friends invite, on his way to California with a two week maximum couch stay to look for another job and ended up with a Fortune 500 paper and forms company before landing a job at Shimano as an entry level sales manager. David has been with Shimano for more than 28 years, not just because of fishing, which played a large role, because it made every day a fun day, but also because Shimano offered him a lot of diversity to operate and learn various facets of their businesses. David chose to devot his career to the fishing & tackle industry which he is very passionate about. CAMC: How was your transition from living in California to now living in Charleston, was it a big change for you (cultural change)? David Pfeiffer: It is a cultural change, gosh everyone says that, I guess if I wasn’t working doing what I do it maybe more so. I work a lot I travel a lot and then I fish. The fishing here is amazing I really like that and I have found the people here to be refreshingly nice and genuine. It’s not as crowded as California, I haven’t had that much of a problem with the transition other then there is no debating California has the best weather in the world and I don’t like the cold. But honestly after living in California for almost 30 years it’s nice to be away from the massive crush of people everywhere you go to be away from that is kind a nice. CAMC: Why did Shimano pick Charleston for their fishing business headquarters? David Pfeiffer: Actually it was my recommendation, Shimano established a distribution center here several years ago a big part of it was the Port of Charleston, which is an excellent port, after we experienced the Long Beach Port shut down several years ago it was crippling to our business and we needed to diversify. I didn’t have to put the headquarters here, but when I studied Charleston’s location to all of the markets we do business in the Southeast, Charleston has inshore fishing, nearshore fishing, offshore fishing it has a good size and it’s growing. There is strong infrastructure for boat manufacturers and fishing, it all worked and we attracted great local talent to work for us. CAMC: Do all of your fishing brands get distributed from the Charleston distribution center? David Pfeiffer: Yes all of our fishing brands get distributed from our Charleston distribution center and our West Coast center based on the proximity to a customer, our Charleston Distribution center also handles shipments to the Canadian market. CAMC: How does Shimano compete in the increasingly competitive fishing market? There seem to be new competitors showing up more frequently than ever.

David Pfeiffer: There are new brands coming into the market all the time some last and some do not, what it indicates more than anything is that there is an oversupply of fishing rods, reels and tackle. We are deeply involved in the industry people recognize that, there is a certain trust level with Shimano. We try to improve our selves all the time, we are never really satisfied, we continue to improve, that is the Japanese way and it is the way Shimano operates as well, we never take our customers trust for granted. CAMC: Can you give us a glimpse into what the future looks like for Shimano? David Pfeiffer: We think the future is really bright and the industry is in really good shape, there are a lot of young people that are getting involved in fishing, we’re trying to balance our appeal to both sexes and really create products of the future that will make fishing more enjoyable and transparent to the experience, we want to engage in an experiential way with our customers about what fishing really means, thats just kind of this cool opportunity that’s been created in the broader market where the experience is greater than the product and we feel like we can really relate with our customers because we understand fishing. We’re looking at digital transformation in how we do business and to continue making great products; continue diving deeper into the industry to make sure fishing is great. CAMC: What is Shimano North America Fishing company mission statement or principles? David Pfeiffer: Our Mission statement is “Closer to nature and closer to people” that’s what we aspire to, its about being out in nature and people using our products so we have to be closer to both and that also really guides our involvement in advocacy and sharing healthy accessible resources. CAMC: You have participated in fishing industry related nonprofit organizations when you lived in California, which ones do you participate with here in the Lowcountry? David Pfeiffer: I’m on the board of directors for the American Sport fishing Association, as well as The Center for Sport Fishing policy. I’m also on the board of CCA California where I was one of the founding board members. I haven’t joined the board of CCA South Carolina but we host their events here at our facility. We have to all be aware of how important access is to fishing, there are a lot groups that would like to take away that access. Recreational anglers are the best stewards of the environment that has been proven over and over again. - Sam Buckareff

Charleston Offshore Fishing Winter Brings the Monsters

H

By Capt. Drew Demaree

appy new years fellow anglers! I hope everyone has had a wonderful time over the holidays. A great way to start your new year is to get out to the blue water and target some MONSTER wahoo. The month of January brings in migrating packs of trophy size wahoo off the coast of South Carolina. We’re talking about bringing in colossal striped missiles weighing upwards of 100 pounds. This time of year the colder inshore currents push the bait along the warmer Gulf Stream currents making locating these more predicable. Packs of wahoo like to congregate along this edge of warmer water feeding off the baitfish. During the warmer months it can be more difficult to find wahoo as the fish are much more spread out with the bait being everywhere you look. Pay close attention to the latest sea surface temperatures to find where an eddy or some backflow from the Gulf Stream meets the 160-foot ledge. This is the spot where most of the bait will be holding and, you guessed it, monster wahoo! Also, if you’re having trouble finding temp brakes around the ledge then

look for the warmer water around 69-70 degrees. I typically like to start the day high speed trolling searching for water that’s holding bait. For my high speed spread I pull a mix of bullet heads on trolling weights and cup faced lures out back. Once I have found some good water I like to work the area zigzagging up and down the ledge to find the fish. Perhaps you’re marking fish and they’re not biting; slow the spread down and put out some meat on wire. While you’re at it you might as well look for the tuna by throwing out some fluorocarbon on the shotgun. The winter is also a great time for bottom fishing. Grouper season ends January 1; however, the vermilion snapper are thick along with black sea bass in shallower water. Any live bottom along the ledge that you mark while trolling is a good place to start. The 120-80 foot range has been particularly hot producing both vermilion and black sea bass. Starting off the 2019 season with some meat in the cooler is a great way to set the tone for the New Year so get on the water and bring in some of these migrating monsters. The Southside Fishing Report January Forecast for Kiawah, Seabrook & Edisto Islands

T

he water temperatures have dropped at a rapid pace and are starting to hold steady in the mid 50’s . This is about a month earlier than last year, which has us adjusting to our winter time fishing patterns a bit earlier than previous year. The cooler waters and shorter daylight has got the fish in wintertime mode and our angling methods have to adjust with the fish. The redfish are moving away from structure and moving onto shallow flats and small creeks making for some optimal sight fishing opportunities. We have been switching from live bait to more artificial lures like smaller hard baits and soft plastics. With the colder and clearer waters a slower presentation and flouro carbo leaders will help produce more bites. Just remember that redfish are getting into more of a survivor mode than a feeding mode, they are staging on shallow flats to get warm and grouping up to help for some protection against their main predator this time of the year the bottle nose dolphin, so the more distance and quiet you are will help how productive the schools are that you’re fishing, if all else fails quarter up some blue crab and wait then out. With the redfish going shallower , the trout are starting to do the opposite and go to deeper water, mostly staging on ledges where water drops off from 5-15 feet. Covering a larger area while casting your favorite soft plastics on a 1/4 or 1/2 oz jig head will help you locate the schools of sea trout, not too far from where you have been catching them over the Fall. A slower retrieve and lighter line will help with the softer bite, also I like the ( black, white, clear ) baits on the sunnier clear water

days and switching over to ( chartreuse , and or pink) baits on the lower light and murky water days. Once you find them it should be game on because they are bunched up and are feeding well, just remember you might have to move to stay with the school. Most of my summer / fall redfish structure areas are getting over run with large numbers of sheephead lately . They are really aggressive with the cooler waters and are feeding good on : fiddler crabs, live shrimp and oysters, on a carolina rig with 12” leader with a # 1 or 2 Owner mosquito hook. So now take advantage of the warmer weather lighter wind days that can be really productive this time of the year. Don’t get discouraged on the loss of our summertime variety of species, but give it a chance to perfect your technique on the big 3 ( redfish, trout, and sheepshead) that are still around in our inshore waters during our winter fishing months. Give us a call at 843-693-2460, and or look us up on the web at www.affinitycharters.com where myself or one of our captains can help get you out for an enjoyable day on the water. Spot Light on Business Charleston Trailer By CAMC Staff

Rod and Maggie Nielsen decided that they had enough looking for a reliable service and parts center for trailers. They owned a few cargo trailers and had a terrible time finding a relaible place to get them serviced. They knew they could do a much better job themselves and saw the need and the opportunity to open a trailer store that provided exceptional service as well as a great parts department.

So they did just that, in July of 2012 Rod and Maggie as well as Steve Johnson, their service manager, opened Charleston Trailer. They originally started as a parts and service shop only, they sold parts for do-it-yourself

folks, who wanted to build custom aluminum boat trailers and provided service for trailers. After repeatedly hearing from boat

owners asking them what a "new trailer would cost" they started retailing trailers from a manufacturer in Florida. After a little while they realized that they could improve on the overall quality of the trailers they were seliing so in 2015 Rod and Maggie started building their own trailers. 'Today Charleston Trailer does it all as it relates to trailers, they provide a vast array of parts for trailers, they have an exceptional service shop, they service all brands of boat trailers as well as cargo, utility, and flat-bed

trailers and Charleston Trailer builds high quality aluminum boat trailers with aluminum brackets and stainless steel hardware for boats 14' to 34'. Rod, Maggie and their staff continue to provide the very best trailer service & parts, as well as building exceptional boat traiers here

in Charleston, wether its a custom boat trailer or from models they make, there dedication to exceptional service keeps their customers coming back! Visit them today, they are located at 4740 Franchise St. in North Charleston

Focus on Fishing

Artificial Shrimp and Winter Specks

I

n January here in the Lowcountry, we reach the lowest temperatures of the New Year. This also includes our water temperatures, and with cold water temperatures, brings clearer water and slower moving fish. A majority of us inshore anglers fishing in the South look forward to targeting Winter Spotted Seatrout, also known as Speckled Trout or Specks, and when doing so, we primarily use artificials. One of the main artificials is Shrimp. There are a number of companies with artificial Shrimp designs that have become popular with different colored Shrimp. Companies such as D.O.A., Betts, also known as Billy Bay, LiveTarget and Vudu are amongst the most common. So, how would we target Winter Trout and what techniques would we use incorporating the artificial Shrimp? To target the Trout, you will have to watch your incoming and outgoing tides. Prime tides in most locations would be two hours after low or two hours after high. This allows the Trout in positive locations to position themselves in deeper holes just outside of tributaries and smaller creeks attached to larger rivers. The Trout let the current from the moving tides do most of the work while their waiting for their next meal. The tides will push crustaceans, like Shrimp, including small fish with the tide. They tend to move in and out of the smaller creeks with these tides and the Trout are quite aware of this. You can fish a lot of these locations off kayaks, from smaller boats and some locations you may even have access by foot. Your objective will be to place artificial Shrimp in the vicinity of these Trout that are now moving slower and sitting deeper than most other months. So, what techniques can we use to aid us in this endeavor? Free flipping artificial Shrimp directly tied to your rod is one method you can use. Of course, artificial Shrimp come in different weights, usually ¼ ounce or ½ ounce. The ½ ounce would be recommended so that the Shrimp can sink faster. Take the Shrimp and cast out past the hole you are targeting, then allow the Shrimp to sink while slowly bringing in your slack. Once the Shrimp has reached the bottom, slowly move the Shrimp along the bottom

with a couple of small, quick twitches every now and then just to catch a lurking Trout’s attention. The Trout will usually pick up the Shrimp while it’s flowing with the current. If you find that the current still seems too strong to reach your 10 CHARLESTON

CAM_CHAR_01_2019.indd 10

JANUARY 2019

By Jiggin Jerry

desired depth, you can incorporate another technique by using a ½ ounce trolling weight, tie your fight line to the trolling weight, then tie approximately 24 inches of 20-pound test fluorocarbon leader line to the other end of the trolling weight, then tie on your desired Shrimp. This will allow you to cast out further and sink faster, pulling your Shrimp behind the weight like a dog on a leash. This method works quite effectively. I personally have landed a large number of Trout using this technique in faster water conditions and fishing deeper holes. The last technique I would recommend would be a popping cork technique. Of course, the amount of leader line attached to the underside of the cork would depend on the depth you are trying to fish from the surface of the water, which would be where the cork will sit and how deep the Shrimp will be from that cork. This technique is usually used when you are fishing a ledge just before a drop off or deeper hole in the water where Trout, especially juveniles, will be watching for food coming over the edge in the current. The technique is also used in the Summer for fishing in shallow water or over structure, like Oyster beds, etc.

Cast the popping cork with Shrimp to the shallow side and allow the current to move towards the drop off with the cork, reeling in your slack and your fight line as the cork approaches. The Trout will usually attack the artificial Shrimp within a 10foot radius of the drop off, so watch your cork carefully and be ready to set a hook. If you’re fishing with the current moving away from you, then you will have to feed line to the cork, allowing it to move away to its destination. You will do this by opening your bail or pushing your cast button on your bait caster to allow the current to take the line it needs to keep the cork and the Shrimp flowing naturally with the current. Fishing for Winter Trout can be a cold, long, hard day, but if you’re willing to put in the time and effort, you may find it to be quite worthwhile. After all, this time of year is when some of us anglers find our Spotted Seatrout well within the range of 3 to 7 pounds, which makes one nice selfie or photo and a memory that may last a lifetime. I hope this helps everyone out there who is trying to target some Winter Trout. Until next time, good luck out there and have fun fishing! Lowcountry Kayak Fishing Lowcountry Kayak Anglers Year in Review

A

s 2018 has come to a close; I reflect back at how great 2018 was and how exciting 2019 is going to be! Lowcountry Kayak Anglers or LKA is a “not for profit” club of like minded people that love to fish and do it from kayaks. The club has been around since 2015 and continues to thrive and grow as the sport of kayak fishing grows as well. The club holds a number of fishing tournaments each year as well as a season-long (8 months) Angler of the Year competition. In June we held our annual Battle at Paradise Charity Tournament with all the proceeds going to the SC chapter of Heroes on the Water (HOW) a veteran’s charity, which offers alternative therapeutic programs to serve veterans, active-duty military

personnel, first-responders and their families. We were able to raise over $1500 for the HOW chapter and had a great event on the water. 2018 also saw the launch of the inaugural LKA Inshore Trail series. Three inshore tournament events that led to an inshore championship tournament for the best anglers out of the series events. All of our tournaments use the “CPR” or Catch/Photo?/Release format for scoring where the angler measures the fish on a measuring board, takes a photo with a tournament identifier and submits that instead of a live weigh-in. These two events are open to any kayak angler who wishes to participate. Our 2018 Inshore Trail Championship was won by Gary Carter. The Angler of the Year is a competition open to all club members where they fish for 8 different species (both fresh and saltwater) of fish, one per month, with points awarded for fish submitted. Congratulations are in order for our 2018 Angler of the Year, Greg Northrup! Our final event for the 2018 club year is our annual Trout for Tots 12 CHARLESTON

competition, another CPR tournament keyed on fishing for trout. Entry to the tournament is a donation to Toys for Tots and ran the month of December. We were lucky to partner with Eye Strike Fishing and Coastal Angler Magazine to promote a great event open to all that will wrap up just after publication, so be sure to check online to see what the winning fish came out to! Annual club membership is a very reasonable $25 for an individual and $50 for a family and registration for the 2019 season begins in April and membership includes discounts to local tackle shops and other local retailers as well as many other perks and events. Looking forward to 2019 here are some dates to put on your calendar: Battle at Paradise Charity Fishing Tournament for HOW will be June 8th and is open to all kayak anglers. The LKA Inshore Trail Series will have 6 events this year with dates on 17 March, 27 April, 26 May, 22 September, 20 October and 10 November. More details as to times and locations can be found on our Facebook page

as well as our website and is also open to all kayak anglers who wish to participate. 2019 looks to be a great year and I look forward to meeting you on the water! We also thank Coastal Angler Charleston for their support with this column space in 2018 and the many many sponsors and supporters that helped make 2018 happen. Be safe on the water this winter. Carolina Flyfisher Winter Readiness

W

e have seen glimpses of the colder weather and its time to rethink our gear and tactics for the coming months. Fishing can be fantastic through the colder months and by changing a few things, you’ll stay warm and in fish. Fly line is built on a core. In “warmwater lines” the core is made of monofiliment. “Coldwater lines” contain a braided center. If we try to use a coldwater flyline in the warm tropical water, it becomes limp and will not cast (all the transfer of energy is lost). On the other hand, if we use a tropical line in cold water temps, it becomes stiff and is difficult to cast. You can stretch the line to some degree and maintain control but if your fishing more than a couple of times this winter, invest in a new line. I generally pick out a few heavy crabs to throw in my winter box for emotional support, but other than that, the high tide crab boxes are on break for a few months. My winter fly box loses all sense of color, flash, and creativity as most of the winter offerings are either black or white. A combo of black and purple is a local favorite. Most will be weightless or have small bead chain eyes. Large schools of fish require more stealth so stay away from heavy flies that spook skinny groups easily. In the winter, I always carry a dry bag with extra clothes and a towel. Just in case. Everyone is familiar with Buff brand neck gaiters and face masks, right? Ever try two during the winter? Or better yet, invest in their line of windproof polar or Merino wool Buffs (you’ll never regret it!). Gloves, a good wool hat,

and a tarp round out the dry bag load-out. (The tarp takes up little space and can protect 3-4 people in a pop up storm). If your miserable on the water, you wont stay long and probably will not be as excited next time. Stay warm and layered. The water around Charleston and the Lowcountry this time of year is as clear as its going to get. Combine this with the fact that there can be 100’s of eyes in a redfish school watching for the first sign of trouble and it can get tricky. The goal is to maximize your chances. A light blue shirt will not silhouette as badly as a dark colored one and will give you that few more seconds or those few more feet you need to close the deal. It sounds silly; but I promise you, they can see you much easier if you stand out. Try and match your background. I personally won’t go as far as the water camo design shirts, but I guarantee that they won’t hurt your fishing! With a little planning, your winter fishing can quickly become your favorite time of the year. Big schools with less people..whats not to love!

Boating in the Lowcountry Boat Shows

I

n last month’s article, I discussed the fact that the off season is a great time to buy a boat. The culmination of that time frame and the absolute best time to buy just could be at the 38th Charleston Boat Show being held January 25-27, 2019 at the North Charleston Convention Center. Competition between dealers often drives pricing down. In fact, we prefer not to call it a Boat Show, but a Boat Sale. Many boat manufacturers offer rebates and other incentives. Many engine manufacturers offer additional engine warranty for free. Lenders often reduce interest rates as well. All this adds up to savings well into the thousands.

We Keep You ON THE ROAD Quality Boat Trailers Repairs, and Parts Sales

Boat shows also give you an opportunity to compare options and features on several boats that you may be considering. It’s one thing to search boats online, but certainly better to climb aboard and check the quality, comfort, roominess, storage and other characteristics that you just can’t feel online, especially when the boats under consideration are all under one roof. Dealer inventory and available production slots are at their peak at the boat show and will be at a premium just after the show. That means that if you are considering a new boat this spring, be prepared to make your deal while at the show. You’ll get the best price and the color and options you want. Boat shows are also a great family event. JBM and Associates produces a great boat show with lots of excitement for the whole family including the Coastal Fishing Expo presented by Coastal Carolina Fisherman and sponsored by Field and Stream. These first class fishing seminars are held all weekend and taught by the area’s top fishing experts. Pirates Captain Jack Sparrow, Anne Bonney and Mary Read will be at the Show sharing their best pirate stories and hosting pirate scavenger hunts. Live music, food trucks and other fun nautical adventures make this a must attend annual event and the best way to celebrate coastal living. At Duncan’s Boats, we look forward to seeing you at the Boat Show in January. Jim Duncan / Duncan’s Boats www.duncansboats.com / 843-744-2628

he operations of the Exuma Cays Land & Sea Park (ECLSP) have changed over its more than half century of existence. Designated a “no take marine reserve in 1986, no fishing or taking of any organism (including plants and shells) is allowed. The ECLSP is known internationally for its pristine marine environment and offers visitors exceptional diving and recreational opportunities. Recently the Marine Conservation Institute announced that the Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park earned a Platinum Global Ocean Refuge Award. Joining a prestigious group of ten marine protected areas (MPAs) that comprise the Global Ocean Refuge System means that Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park meets the highest science-based standards for biodiversity protection and best practices for management. Each year, thousands of vessels visit and overnight in the ECLSP. Years ago, the Bahamas National Trust introduced a mooring and anchorage system with fees to reduce the impact. A new fee structure will come into force effective Jan. 1. Mooring fees are based on the size of the vessel and range from $20 to $150 per day. Daily/nightly anchorage fees are 50 cents or $1 per foot depending on the length of the vessel. Dive fees are $10 per diver. For more information, visit www.bnt.bs/exuma-cays-land-seapark/.

FRESHWATER

Since 2015, Frabill has continued to set the quiet standard in bucket conversion. The Frabill Whisper Quiet Aerator system is a portable, aeration design that provides the utmost discretion when fishing with live bait. Constructed with 75 years of experience, the Whisper Drive Aeration Motor has been specifically designed and tested to keep saltwater baitfish and crustaceans healthy and active while emitting minimal sound. With a couple of batteries, the Whisper Quiet Aerator converts any size cooler or bucket into an oxygen-rich livewell. Frabill’s top-of-the-line signature yellow air stone creates enough bubbles to effectively aerate up to 15 gallons of water. As a result of its over-engineered rugged design, Frabill’s Whisper Quiet Aerator has a long shelf life. The aeration system includes premium water-resistant internal parts that help prevent corrosion and won’t let an angler down. Never be surprised by battery rot again.

Surprising Winter is the Best Planting Time

I am often asked when is the best time to plant fruiting plants. My answer is usually the same; the best time is 20 years ago or today. The second best time to plant is during the winter months. Plants are dormant, and can be easily shipped and planted with no stress on the plant because there is not a lot of maintenance once the plant or tree has been planted. Simply dig a good hole, water thoroughly

at planting, and take the rest of the winter off. Even though there are no signs of growth above ground, the root systems will have time to get adjusted to their new location and begin to initiate new root growth. There are plenty of advantages of growing your own edibles. First of all, you know what has been done over the course of the growing season from a chemical stand point. Second, the fruit just taste

better coming out of your home orchard versus buying fruit from the grocers that have little to no flavors. Thirdly, it is good for your soul and you will feel more connected to the environment and nature. Whether it is an apple tree, muscadine vine or a blueberry bush; now is the time to plant.
