Friends Andy Ball and Brent Milgrom pose with two large red drum they caught at the Winyah jetties. By Erin Weeks, SCDNR hen Charlotte resident Andy Ball headed to the South Carolina coast for a summer escape he caught a red drum that was tagged 21 years ago. Since the 1970s, SCDNR biologists have operated a volunteer tagging program whereby recreational anglers can turn their fishing trips into valuable scientific information by tagging the fish they catch and release. Using a specialized tagging device, researchers

W

and anglers insert the tag into the muscle of a fish by the dorsal fin. Harmless to the fish, the tags can remain anchored there for decades as the fish grows. Andy Ball contacted SCDNR’s tagging coordinator, Morgan Hart, to report the tag number and details of the red drum he’d recaptured. Every time a tagged fish is reported, Hart sends detailed updates about the fish’s history to both the original taggers and the recapturers. It’s a neat way to see where a particular fish has traveled since you last saw it. When Hart ran the fish’s history, she was amazed. It had been tagged over 21 years prior. “I could tell right away that the tag report was special,” Hart said. “The tag number was different than anything I had seen recaptured before. Once I realized how long ago it was tagged, I think my mouth literally fell open. “I reached out to the original tagger, Kevin Mischke, and he was delighted to hear that one of his fish was still contributing to the population.” Mischke was an active volunteer tagger from 1990 to 2006. In 1997, he’d caught a large red drum at Wappoo Cut, near his home on James Island. Mischke tagged the fish with a yellow, nylon tag labeled ‘A033559.’ When Mischke caught it, the red drum was already a mature fish at 35 inches—meaning it is now likely to be well older than 21 years of age. SCDNR research has shown red drum are impressively long-lived fish, with biologists documenting fish up to 40 years old. A decade later, redfish ‘A033559’ showed up once again in the records, when angler Warren Wood caught and measured the fish in 2008. By this time, the red drum had grown five inches and migrated to Georgetown, where Wood reported catching it off the Winyah Bay jetties. And that’s exactly where Andy Ball caught the fish this summer – no larger this time, but another decade older.

permit for construction of a new artificial reef off Oregon Inlet could be approved within months, and Outer Banks anglers are happy to hear it. According to a report from the Coastal Review online, the project has been almost three years in the making since the nonprofit Oregon Inlet Artificial Reef Committee formed to apply for funding from the Division of Marine Fisheries. With an $887,000 grant, the stage is set for a proposed two-year project to construct a reef south of the Oregon Inlet Sea Buoy. The project is being funded primarily through the state’s Coastal Recreational Fishing License Grants Program. The plan calls for a 100- to 140-foot vessel as well as 8,000 tons of concrete pipes to be sunk within state waters less than 10 miles south of Oregon Inlet. Recreational anglers and charter captains will reap the benefits of enhanced habitat for decades to come.

Southside Fishing Report for December

Kiawah, Seabrook & Edisto Islands

F

inally some seasonal temperatures have arrived with some cooler nights and mild days, have had the water holding steady in the upper 60’s, and the fishing is heating up with the cooler water. The fish know that old man winter is approaching and they are feeding vigorously to pack on some much need calories to make it through the winter. The water has slowly become clearer and the speckled trout are grouped up in good numbers. We have been having our best luck fishing creek mouths and shell points around high water working rip lines with live and artificial baits ( DOA shrimp and Zman swim shad) under popping corks. Over the last month we have had more success with longer leaders than the summer moving from 18” to 24-36” and also switching from mono to fluoro on the cleaner water days. The redfish inshore have really started to school up in larger numbers, I am seeing schools that previously in the summer were cruising with 8-15 fish, now are in groups of 30-100 fish. Even better the reds are extremely aggressive hitting top water spooks and gold spoons on the flats, and we are still working structure spots at low tide such as docks, blow downs , and rock walls and

getting good numbers using carolina rigs with shrimp , mullets , and or mud minnows. The bull redfish bite has been decent around the inlets and just outside the breakers off the beach, and any day now those breeder redfish will school up and slowly move offshore and will produce some epic days top water sight fishing large schools of 25-40 pound reds moving out to the spawning waters. We haven’t had a ton of great weather days to fish the nearshore reefs but when we have there have been good numbers of weakfish, bull reds, and the sheepshead bite has really started to heat up. Take advantage of any decent weather days because the rivers, inlets and ocean is alive and old man winter will be here before you know it. Give us a call at 843-693-2460, and or look us up on the web at www.affinitycharters.com where myself or one of our captains can help get you out for an enjoyable day on the water. December Fishing Forecast

ecember finds Lowcountry anglers not only concentrating on fishing techniques, but honing their amateur weatherman skills as well. During December the fishing in Charleston is all about the water temperature. As long as the water temp stays above the magic 60 degree mark, fishing will remain productive. The trout and redfish bite will still be on around the pier, but the fish will become more sluggish as the water cools. Live bait will work best for these fish, but artificial jigs will produce if fished with a slower retrieve. Mud minnows will be an easily accessible live bait option as finger mullet and shrimp become harder to find during the winter. The winter sheepshead started showing up in November and typically hang around until February or March. As the water cools many pier anglers shift from fiddler crabs to fresh mussels when targeting large sheeps. Make a small hole in the shell and hide the hook inside for the best chance of landing one when the shell gets crushed. Owner size 2 or 4 mosquito hooks are commonly used by pier anglers with great results. Other migratory species such as bluefish will be well on their way south, but schools migrating from off the New England coast will pass through. Make sure to keep an eye on the water temperature and take advantage of some good fishing before Old Man Winter takes hold. Back by popular demand this year is the Winter Sheepshead Challenge. From December 1 – February 28 the pier is looking for you to test your skills at landing the elusive convicts. The largest 3 by weight will win gift cards. Fish must be of legal size and caught during normal business hours in order to be weighed into the challenge. Good luck! December Fishing Forecast

he season of transition is upon us. December brings a variety of fishes back to the cooling surf water for spawning. One such species is the notoriously sought-after red drum. Officially a game fish in 1987, red drum have become a South Carolinian icon that can be found on everything from t-shirts to store logos. Distinguished by their dark reddish color and tail eyespot, adult red drum are eventually classified as “bulls” once they reach over 27” in length. At this size they generally reside in the near-shore region, but regulations prohibit keeping these bulls for conservation and reproductive purposes. Although we discourage targeting them, very large bulls are occasionally caught off the Folly Pier. During winter they’ll pass along barrier islands looking for inlets to spawn and can work up an appetite. Large live shrimp or mud minnows are usually the meal they go for off the pier. A good rule of thumb though is to use circle hooks as to improve the rate of survival with a catch and release fish. Joey Crawford Folly Beach Fishing Pier jcrawford@ccprc.com 2 CHARLESTON

Charleston Offshore Fishing Blackfin Tuna

W

By Capt. Drew Demaree

ith the ocean sea temperatures dropping, the offshore bite continues to heat up for both tuna and wahoo! As the ocean waters cool down, the feeding frenzy from the blackfin tuna are rolling in. Nothing like some butterball sashimi! When tuna fishing you need to have a keen eye, activity looking birds, bait, and fish busting. To narrow the search, blackfin like to hang around the ledge in 150 to 300 feet and along temperature breaks where bait is holding. While trolling, make sure to keep a close eye on the sounder looking for bait balls and of course tuna marks. When I find the tuna it’s just a matter of dialing them in on the GPS and sounder to keep the boat landing fish. Now that you’ve found the fish, let’s talk about catching them. If you’ve ever held a blackfin then you’ve seen proportionally how big their eyes are. Blackfin have extremely good eye site, usually shying away from heavy mono and steel leaders. I like to use long 60-90 lb. fluorocarbon leader. Blackfin can be shy from snap swivels so directly rig your bait to the long 30-foot wind on leader and connect it to the

mainline using a ball barring swivel. Seawitches and cedar plugs are a hot choice for the tuna. One of my go to rigs is a daisy chain with about 4 small (5 inch) squids with a cedar plug trailing about 4 feet behind. I like to keep the daisy chain on the shotgun way back and the seawitch bait combo on the riggers. Its best if you keep your baits far behind the boat because blackfin are boat shy. Perhaps you’re marking tuna they’re not coming up. Switch it up by slowing the boat down on your tuna marks and throwing a vertical jig straight down past the school trying to hit the bottom. Then jig it straight up through the school to get tight. Talk about a blast! So while the ocean waters are cooling, get out there and go capitalize on this hot tuna and wahoo bite. Tight lines! Focus on Fishing

Finding a Reel Deal for Christmas

I

t’s Christmas time once again, and we are all looking forward to the holidays, and when it comes to Christmas, a lot of anglers look forward to buying themselves some new gear. I, myself, enjoy a lot of different brand-name fishing equipment. After all, you have well known brands like Shimano, Quantum, Pflueger, Daiwa, Penn and more. All of these companies have a few fantastic fishing reels with great features, and I love to test and use all of them. Personally, I do not care which popular company they are if they have a bad reel design, they have a bad reel design, and if they have a great reel design, they have a great reel design. It seems to vary by different models each company puts out regardless of their prices. But, for this holiday season, I have to share one of my discoveries. There is a new kid on the block, and the company’s name is Cadence. Cadence sells fishing reels and rods, and their gear can only be found online. They sell directly to the consumer, removing the middle man, so they can maintain a low cost and sell higher-end products for the price. This is not the only thing that caught my attention with their company. The second was their motto—Go fishing give back. I was curious—what do they mean by this statement?

DECEMBER 2018

By Jiggin Jerry Their website says, “With every Cadence purchase, we promise to put youth combos in the hands of our next generation through one of our charity partners.” This touched me. After all, I firmly believe in the future of our next generation of fishermen and passing down the wonderful sport of fishing to them. Looking into it closer, I discovered that the company had donated hundreds of children’s fishing reel and rod combos to their charity partners to aid children with special needs and disadvantages to experience the sport of fishing. I found this to be perfect. Now I needed to test their equipment, so I obtained a couple of rod and reel combinations from Cadence—their CS10 series reels and CR7 rods, and believe me, when I look over reels, I go all the way. I completely disassemble the reel and look over all its components. I would not recommend this for the novice, but I have been doing this for years. I reviewed the materials used for the gears, main shaft, bearings, bushings, what type of lubricant, and one of the things that is crucial to the quality of a reel is the placement of these components, especially the bearings. The CS10 series reel has 11 corrosion-resistant bearings, and they are all placed in high-friction areas.

Lowcountry Kayak Fishing The Quest to Catch a Snaggletooth

A

s the weather changes and the water temperature starts to come down from the summer 80’s all the inshore fish strap on the feedbags and start to gorge on as much mullet, menhaden and shrimp as they can before the winter snap hits. Late November thru December and into January is by far the best time of year to fish for Speckled Sea Trout, or as I like to call them Snaggletooths! Trout are great to fish for because you can present a large variety of baits to them and still get a bite; in the early morning and late evening as the sun is rising or setting a zara spook topwater can’t be beat! On an overcast morning tie on a suspended twitch-bait like a mirrodine 17MR-18. To work grass lines, tie on a 1/8oz trout eye jig head with a Zman minnowZ or my personal favorite Slim SwimZ in “Opening Night” or “Smokey Shad”. If you are taking your son or daughter out to catch their first trout, a popping cork with live shrimp or a voodoo shrimp tied underneath always draws a bite. Colder water also means clearer water making stealthy approaches a must, in your kayak this should not be a problem, slow deliberate strokes and long casts will let you get into those trout hot spots without giving away your presence. I use my stake out stick and anchor trolley the most during this time, I like to approach creek mouths (especially ones that are shell lined and have a deep spot in front of them) from downstream and

stake just inside my casting distance. From this vantage point I can cast into the creek mouth with my zman slim swimz and bounce it back out mimicking a glass minnow caught up in the current. The trout which are ambush hunters will be lying in wait at the mouth or just outside it and pounce on my bait as it comes tumbling by, there is nothing more fun than to feel that violent head shake at the end of your line as that trout tries to make a run for it! Remember also that trout are schooling fish so when you find the first one there is a great chance that are many more there for the catching, numerous times I have been able to cast into one small area and catch a dozen plus trout in a short period of time. For those kayak anglers interested Low Country Kayak Anglers (LKA) does a Trout for Tots tournament in December, the entrance fee is a new unwrapped toy and there will be prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place for biggest trout caught. Tune into the LKA Facebook page for more details in the coming weeks. Good luck and tight lines! Mike Kohler, LKA Tournament Director

Jiggin Jerry Continued from Page 6 Reels that are going to be used for continuous, repetitive casting, like throwing artificial lures, are made light and need a lot of bearings to be able to handle the extreme conditions of repetitive rotation and opening of the bail and line movement, including heavy use of the drag system. This is why Cadence incorporated a bearing in the drag system on this model reel. They also incorporated direct drive, which means the handle screws directly into the drive gear. To reduce the weight and limit the amount of fatigue to the angler’s wrist and arm, they incorporated lightweight components, like a solid magnesium frame, carbon fiber handle, carbon rotor, carbon fiber drag system, and the comfort of an EVA knob. All components found in some of the highestpriced reels on the market, but after looking over these reels completely, I noticed that they even went a step further. The screw cap to cover the access to the drive gear is solid anodized aluminum. The decorative side plates are as well. I found this to be incredible for a reel that sells for just over half the price of its competitors’ reels of the same quality or less. Now it came time to put them to the test. I had taken their 1,000 size reel to North Carolina to fish for Trout in their fast-moving mountain streams and landed an abundance of Trout on this amazing reel. It handled beautifulsized Trout, some exceeding 18 inches, in fast water conditions flawlessly. Its drag system with light, 4 to 6 pound test lines worked

smoothly. I then used the same reel inshore in South Carolina targeting Spotted Seatrout, some exceeding 20 inches. Again, it operated flawlessly, and after weeks of testing in the conditions of salt, I spotted no corrosion. Of course, this also means I maintain my reels by washing them at the end of each day, but even then, in some models of reels, you will find heavy corrosion, but I have not with the Cadence model. Next, I put into action their 4,000 size reel targeting Red Drum, and while catching Red Drum in sizes up to 34 inches, I accidently hooked into an 80-pound Southern Stingray, the fight was on! I was only using 15-pound test line. I thought to myself, well, if anything is going to test this reel, this is it! I battled the powerful Ray for 8 minutes and landed it! The reel worked flawlessly, and may I add, Cadence’s CR7 rod accompanied the reel in its task and felt fantastic. So, if you are interested, in trying one of these fantastic reels yourself, feel free to contact Cadence at www.CadenceFishing. com, and not only have the opportunity to purchase some fantastic equipment for Christmas, but an opportunity to give back. I hope this helps you with the Christmas season and your hunt for your holiday gear. Like I always say, good luck out there and have fun fishing! Boating in the Lowcountry Best Time to Buy

C

onsumers often ask me “When is the best time to buy a boat to get a good deal?” If you are looking for a new boat, the off season is certainly the best time. The economic law of supply and demand is true in the boat business. Dealer inventory is relatively high and potential buyers are few. This is particularly true if you can find a closeout model that suits your needs. However, in the current robust economy, the choices on closeout models are slim, but there are still great deals available. Dealer inventory is generally highest at this time of year giving you plenty of stock options to meet your needs. Also, dealers have more quality time to help you find the right boat for your family.

We Keep You ON THE ROAD

Given the current state of the economy, most boat manufacturers are still reporting long lead times on special ordered boats. This means in order to get the boat of your dreams with the options and colors that you want, you need to act quickly in the late fall or early winter months in order to have your new boat available in the spring. If you wait until April to begin your search, be prepared to pay top dollar on stock inventory or expect delivery on your special ordered boat in late summer. Beginning your search in the winter will have you prepared to make your best deal and be ready to enjoy Lowcountry waters at the first sign of spring. The off season is also a great time to buy a used boat. Dealers with used, traded inventory prefer not to sit on the cash through the winter and will set the price accordingly. Private sellers want to sell now so that they can begin their search on a new boat before spring. One thing is for sure when buying a new or used boat at any time. Once you make up your mind that the time and the boat is right, make your decision quickly before you lose the deal to someone else who is ready to take the plunge. At Duncan’s Boats, we do have a select few closeout models, several clean used trades and a good supply of stock inventory available now. Our on water location means that an on water demonstration is easy. So now is the best time to buy a boat and get a great deal. Jim Duncan / Duncan’s Boats www.duncansboats.com / 843-744-2628

Photo courtesy of IGFA hose interested in destination fisheries have probably heard of the fantastic fishing, scenery and hospitality experienced on Mongolian taimen trips. Well, there are taimen in Russia, too. And Russian rivers have a reputation for producing the largest taimen on the planet. Taimen are known as the largest, meanest salmonids in the world. They look and behave somewhat like brown trout only on a much larger scale. Fishing for them might be the world’s ultimate freshwater fly rod experience. Angler Guido Rahr, III got to experience taimen in a big way in September, when he hooked into a pending IGFA record for fly tackle taimen. He caught and released the 83-pound, 4-ounce monster on Russia’s Tugar River. If approved, it will replace the existing 71-pound, 2-ounce record for the heaviest taimen on a fly rod ever recorded by IGFA. The IGFA all-tackle world record for taimen was also caught in Russia. In 1993, Yuri Orlov landed the 92-pound, 8-ounce record on Siberia’s Keta River. He caught it on a Blue Fox spinner and 17-pound-test line.

very few years a new technique explodes on the bass fishing scene. Many of these trends just fade away, but some endure and become a part of every bass angler’s arsenal. The technique of the moment is the Ned rig. It is excellent for big numbers of spotted bass and smallmouths. It’ll catch largemouths, too. And it really shines when the fishing gets tough. On post-frontal days in winter, when bass are deep on vertical structure, it’s time to rig up a Ned and go to work. It is the perfect technique when bass are looking for a meal that is small and slow moving. A Ned rig is a miniature soft-plastic stick bait threaded on a light 1/8- to 1/32-ounce mushroom-style jighead. A drop of superglue holding the 3- to 5-inch worm to the jighead works wonders for making this rig durable. When fishing at winter depths, light line should be matched with a light spinning rod with a supple tip. Go as light as you dare, with 4- to 8-pound-test braid finished off with a fluorocarbon leader. When fish are active, a Ned worked steadily along the bottom is deadly. When they are sluggish, it’s better to let the jig sit on the bottom, allowing the bait’s vertical tail to do the work with the slightest shake of the rod tip. It’s not the most exciting way to fish, but it catches fish—sometimes when nothing else will.

hose who have seen his show “Man Fire Food” will recognize Roger Mooking as the iconic host of what has become the ultimate look at extreme outdoor or fire/smoke based cooking. Each week Roger introduces us to passionate and inventive outdoor cooking aficionados and an array of epic custom-built apparatuses designed to cook everything from 200-pound sturgeon to whole cows on a massive homemade spit. Roger’s visits give us insight into the innovative extremes outdoor cooks utilize in their pursuit of perfection. If you’re an outdoor cooking enthusiast, “Man Fire Food” is a must-watch program. We recently caught up with Roger to discuss the show’s success and rich content. CAM: Roger, your show has become a must-watch series for anyone who mans a grill. Why do you think your show has become so popular? Roger: Over the course of the last 7 seasons, we’ve seen an amazing array of outdoor and flame-inspired cooking devices and techniques featured on the show. If you love outdoor cooking, then you’re probably going to like the show. People just love being outside with loved ones. Backyard barbecues have been a longstanding tradition; in fact, you could say that tradition may even date back to the most primitive use of fire itself. There’s also something very special about slowing down and taking the time it demands to tend a hypnotizing fire and be immersed in the full experience, and getting to eat at the end of that entire adventure. The smells, sounds, sights of nature and breaking the hectic pace that a lot of us live at… it’s needed. CAM: So, you think cooking outdoors is somehow satisfying a primal urge? Roger: When I look back at some of the massive cuts of meat that have been prepared on previous episodes, it does seem like fire and food is primal, and I think we would all have to agree that cooking with wood, coals or heated rocks bridges a gap that is satisfying to those primal instincts.

CAM: What can we expect to see in future episodes? Roger: Humans all over the globe have been cooking with fire for many millennia now, and cultures all over the world have different ways of cooking with fire. I would like to explore extending the borders of the show to feature more places outside of the U.S. CAM: What advice would you offer the average outdoor cook? Roger: Just to enjoy the whole experience. I think the average outdoor cook is a more experienced cook, or else they would be a novice indoor cook. It takes a different level of attention to detail and mindfulness to cook outdoors because you have to deal with many other variables like wind, rain, keeping the fire going, how hot or cool is the fire, what are the hotspots, how much wood/charcoal do I need to add at a particular stage, bugs trying to get you, and all sorts of other things that you simply don’t have to worry about in a modern day North American kitchen with electricity and good shelter. Also, use the smoke as a seasoning advantage. You don’t need to add all kinds of stuff if you start with a freshly caught fish, some salt and a bit of good wood smoke; the work is already done, you just have to make sure you don’t get in the way or don’t burn the darn thing. It’s the magic of simplicity. CAM: How do you select the places that we see on the show? Roger: There is a very dedicated but small team of amazing people who find, research and vet all the potential locations for “Man Fire Food.” The winning candidates have endured hours of interviews and a barrage of questions as exhaustive as possible. The variables are so unimaginable to the viewer, and if we all do our jobs right, you have no idea how much work went into what looks so simple on TV. We’re always interested in looking at unique “Man Fire Food” subject matters. If any of your readers think they qualify, they should email: Contact@rogermooking.com. “Man Fire Food’s” new season premiered Wednesday, Nov. 28 at 9 p.m. on The Cooking Channel.

FISH & FISHING

Feeding Strategies MARK SOSIN What appears obvious may be deceiving. Most anglers erroneously believe that when predators corner a hapless school of baitfish, they simply open their mouths and swim through the prey, gorging themselves in the process. It doesn’t happen that way. A predator must isolate and attack one specific victim at a time. That’s not always an easy task. A frantic school of baitfish sensing predators can appear as a shimmering mass of silver with each individual member of the school constantly changing position. Selecting a tasty morsel to ingest can frustrate even the most sophisticated gamefish. That’s one reason why you’ll find predators lurking under a pod of bait. The instant their intended prey strays from the pack, they strike. When you think about it, you can understand that any gamefish searches for a victim that is isolated, disabled or looks different from the others. Feeding is a tradeoff. Success centers on expending as little energy as possible for the food value received. Unsuccessfully chasing prey for long distances keeps a predator lean, hungry, and tends to slow it down. The easiest way to get a strike when you locate a school of baitfish starts with a cast into the middle of the school. It doesn’t matter whether you are fishing an artificial lure or a natural bait. The retrieve should work your offering toward the fringes of the school in basically the same direction in which the school is swimming or at a 45-degree angle to the basic direction. As your bait or lure eases toward the edge of the school, it is easier for a predator to isolate. And, it looks slightly different than the baitfish in the school. Some live bait fishermen squeeze a minnow before casting

92

it or drifting it so that it will be disabled. Clipping a fin or two also impairs swimming motion. The injured fish will have trouble swimming, and that means it will send out vibrations that attract the attention of predators. These frantic movements to obtain equilibrium frequently trigger the strike. Even during the anticipated feast of locating a school of baitfish, certain factors come into play. As water temperatures drop, a predator will not pursue its prey as fast and as far as it would in warmer water. When you are fishing a chum slick and fish are feeding on the chum, it is much more effective to fish an offering without retrieving it. A dead drift works just fine. I’ve seen that produce inshore and offshore including tuna and sailfish. I once had an opportunity to watch scientists monitor the behavior of a school of bluefish in a massive aquarium as they attacked a school of minnows. By chance, I focused on a minnow that did not move, even when attacked by a bluefish four times. Each time, the bluefish broke off the attack because the minnow did not behave as it should. On the fifth pass, the minnow moved and it was eaten faster than you can read this sentence. Finally, if you are trolling and see a school of small fish on the surface, approach the school slowly so as not to scare them. Ease alongside the school and work the fringes or establish a position ahead of the baitfish. If you prefer to cast, keep the boat away from the school and make the cast into the school. As you retrieve your offering and it begins to clear the fringes of the school, you should get a strike.
