hile mystic grouper can be caught year-round in the Bahamas, the winter months are our favorite time of year. Whenever a weather window presents itself, we point our bow east across the Florida Straights in search of these deep-water bottom dwellers. Mystics are one of the lesser-known grouper species, simply because anglers don’t fish deep enough to target them. Like all grouper, they are excellent to eat and usually weigh from 15 to 50 pounds, although they can grow much larger. It takes special gear to fish the 800- to 1,200-foot depths where we find mystics. Armed with Shimano Tiagra 80 WAs and Shimano Tiagra 50 WAs equipped with Hooker Electric Autostop drives, we string up 65- to 100-pound Power Pro braid on Crafty One Custom’s Deep Drop Rods. We begin by paying close attention to our Humminbird Solix sonar with CHIRP HD digital technology to locate bottom structure. We look for cones, holes, drop-offs, ledges and deep-water ridges. Once viable structure is located, we position the boat above it with engines out of gear to judge how wind and current will manipulate our drift. Then the
boat is repositioned up-current from the structure and the deep-drop rigs are readied. When targeting mystics, we use our www.ThreeBuoysFishing.com grouper deep-drop rigs made with three 8/0 VMC 3x Circle Hooks on 100-pound branch lines off of 12 feet of 150-pound main line. For bait, we prefer fresh-cut 8-inch strips of dolphin, tuna, wahoo or barracuda. Many deep-drop anglers claim, “no light, no bite,” but our experience has proven that, especially with mystics, we catch more and bigger fish without lights. We deploy two rods on opposite sides of the boat. Lead weights in the 10-pound range are the rule of thumb, but weight can be adjusted to the current. After the weights hit bottom, the reels are left in freespool to lay the rigs straight down on the bottom. The engines should be used to decrease the boat’s drift to a standstill, if possible. If the boat drifts, let out line to keep the rigs on bottom. When the rod tip bumps and shakes, resist the urge to lock up the drag and retrieve line. Wait a minute or two for additional fish to sense the commotion. They’ll often eat the remaining baits. When it’s time to strike, lift the reel’s drag to strike (pre-set to 20 pounds of drag) and slowly start your retrieve. Big mystic grouper put up quite a fight at first, and you might even think you’ve hung bottom. Be patient and slowly gain as must line as possible. When fish are about halfway up, their air bladders expand and create lift. They will begin to float your rig up to the surface. For more tips and tactics on deep-dropping and the tackle and rigs to get tight, see www.threebuoysfishing.com. Finding bait becomes more important than at any other time of year. Goebel likes to get out well before dawn in search of shad or herring flickering near the surface, especially when a big moon keeps baitfish active all night. Diving birds are also a dead giveaway. They are likely feeding on baitfish pushed by stripers from below. “A lot of times if there’s bait there, I won’t even worry about marking fish on the graph,” Goebel said. “I’ll just put out my lines and start fishing where the bait is.”
By Nick Carter
T
here aren’t many anglers willing to endure the frigid early morning temperatures of winter on a large reservoir. But for those who can handle a little discomfort, right now is the best time of year to hook up with the striper of a lifetime. Around the Southeast, in reservoirs where striped bass were introduced, falling water temperatures spur changes in behavior that make the largest fish in the lake susceptible to anglers. Those 30- to 50-pounders are feeding up right now. They’re storing up reserves that will take them through the spring spawn. “It’s trophy striper season,” said Shane Goebel, of Big Ol’ Fish Guiding Service. “The bigger fish are participating a little better. This time of year, we start going after those big ol’ hogs that are chasing the big baits.” The large summer schools broke up months ago. Stripers are spread out and on the move, following baitfish into the creek mouths and up into the backs of the creeks. Big fish move shallow when water temps hit the mid to low 50s on the lakes Goebel guides in the mountains of north Georgia and western North Carolina. It might take some searching to find them, but the rewards can be huge.
Because the stripers are continually moving with the bait, covering water is crucial. Goebel said to troll as many baits in as wide a spread as you can handle. Herring are great on lakes where they are present, but this time of year you should also work some big gizzard shad or trout into the spread. Sometimes it takes a big mouthful to convince big fish to eat. Goebel runs baits 30 to 40 feet behind planer boards. He’ll drop freelines 100 to 150 feet behind the boat. If the area where he finds bait isn’t too shallow, he’ll put a little bit of weight ahead of the baits on the inside boards to cover more water vertically. He slow trolls at about half a mile per hour. This is a pattern Goebel fishes all the way into May, when stripers have moved into a pre-spawn phase. It might not produce the numbers of fish that downlining into summer mega-schools will, but the fish are generally a lot bigger than those 5- to 10-pound summer schoolies. If catching an enormous striper sounds like fun, zip up your parka and get out on the lake. It’s trophy striper season. Check out Big Ol’ Fish Guiding Service at bigolfish.com.

f Costa Rica isn’t already on your bucket list, it should be. Famous for both inshore and offshore fishing, it’s also a country with incredible biodiversity and exciting eco-tourism opportunities. In short, there’s something for every sportsman and adventure seeker here. From a fishing perspective, the west coast of this Central American country is most favored with several significant cities and ports including Jaco, Quepos and, of course, Golfito. It’s Los Suenos, however, where
my wife, Felicia and I found outstanding action on a trip last April. We worked the inshore grounds, catching huge roosterfish, rainbow runners, grouper, jacks and even mahi. We also decked a big cubera snapper. Of course, we did have an edge. Coastal Angler’s very own Costa Rica inshore reporter Capt. Carlos Arguedas and his first-mate son, Christopher, were our charter crew. “This really is a terrific place to fish,” said Arguedas, “We have access to a lot of different spots ranging from very close to the marina to 50 miles away. The roosterfish action is unbelievable here but we also catch big cubera snapper, amberjack, groupers and huge red snappers, too.” Arguedas loves to take clients for roosterfish because they fight so hard, are found close to port, and grow big. He’s had a 90-pounder grace his deck. For these, he’ll slow troll live baits like blue runners, herring, sardines or bonita. All of these baits, impaled on size 8 circle hooks, also attract other large predators; so you never know what to expect when the rod doubles over. “Roosterfish are very impressive when you first see them,” said Arguedas. “They are exotic-looking with big dorsal rays, a huge mouth and striped flanks. They are stunning to see for the first time. They are also exceptionally strong. Fight a 20-pounder and you’ll think you have a 40-pounder at the end of the line. They jump, too, and shake their head, so remember to lower your rod tip when that fish comes up or you’ll tear the hook free.” Among the other big fish that hit the deck for Arguedas’ crew on a regular basis are goliath grouper that can top 400 pounds. These are targeted around local reefs. If you want to run offshore, sailfish, tuna and marlin abound within 10 miles of port. Dorado, sometimes topping 30 pounds, can be tempted within sight of the coast. Costa Rica’s tropical climate makes it a year-round destination. Most travelers prefer to visit during the dry season, which runs from December through April, but you’ll find lighter crowds and lower travel prices during the “green” or rainy season from May to November. Whenever you visit, it really helps to work with a travel pro that deals frequently with Costa Rica to customize a trip here. Blue Water Sportfishing Charters (http://bluewatersportfishingcharters.com) specializes in setting up trips to Los Suenos. They can put you in the right place at the right time for the fish you want to catch, sights you want to see or adventures you want to experience. They’ll also book you with Capt. Carlos—or you can contact him yourself at www.wingmancr.com.

he first time I saw someone spearfishing, I was intrigued and wondered out loud how hard it would be to load a speargun. A friend heard me and said, “I’m sure you can do it. It’s probably more about technique than brute strength.” He was right. It’s not uncommon to struggle to load your first speargun, and you might suspect they made the bands too short. If you give it some time and use the right technique, it will become easy. First, some safety tips: 1) Never load a speargun out of the water. 2) Keep the safety on until you intend to shoot a fish. 3) Even with the safety on, treat it like a loaded weapon, never let the tip point at anyone. 4) Use tip protectors when not in use, so you don’t scratch anything. Some spearguns are loaded by resting the butt of the gun on your hip and pulling the bands toward the shaft notches. Others are loaded by resting the butt high on the middle of the chest and pulling the bands toward your sternum. Hip-loading spearguns are commonly used by scuba divers, as chest loading can be difficult when wearing a buoyancy compensator vest. Freedivers are less constricted by gear, so they normally use chest-loading spearguns. These have longer range because the shaft tabs sit closer to the butt of the gun. Now, some loading tips: 1) Wear gloves and wetsuit to prevent slips, scrapes or bruising. Some wetsuits have a loading pad built into the chest. 2) Don’t look down and hunch over when loading the bands. Push forward with your chest and pull the band swiftly with your arms, so the shaft tabs are pushed forward to meet the incoming
band. 3) Use a loading tab (if using a wood gun). This simple device makes things much easier by allowing you to first hip load the band to the loading tab and then raise the butt to your chest for the final pull. Although it’s a two-step process, it can be done quickly and will feel much easier. 4) If your bands are still too hard to load, use three longer bands. 5) Work out, lift weights, work on core and upper body. Try bench presses, seated rows, bent over rows, pushups and pull-ups. Bands and dumbbells can be incorporated into your workout routine, whether at the gym or home. If you want to see a band loading video, check out Coastal Angler online. And remember—you can accomplish anything you set your mind to! very blade-handy angler has their own techniques and tricks for peeling the perfect fillet off a fish. But anyone who has spent enough time around a cutting board knows the perfect way to fillet is a combination of three crucial elements: technique, tools and practice. Whether it’s a 15-pound red snapper or a 6-ounce bream, the basics of filleting a fish are the same. The idea is to remove the meat along the fish’s flanks, while leaving behind the head, bones and guts. Step 1: Make a vertical cut just behind the fish’s gill plate and pectoral fin. This cut should go all the way down to the bone and
CANGL_FIL1-FIL4.indd 2
extend from back to belly. Step 2: Run the blade from the first cut all the way down the top of the fish, along the backbone to the tail, making a shallow incision as close to the backbone as you can get it. Step 3: Using that long cut along the backbone, utilize smooth, light strokes to work the fillet away from the bones moving from the back to the belly. The other hand can be used to peel back the meat as you go. Cut around the ribcage when you arrive at it. Step 4: With step 3 completed, you should have a beautiful skinon fillet. To remove the skin, place the fillet on the board skin side down. Start from the tail and insert the knife through the meat down to the skin, leaving a tab of meat and skin at the tail to hold onto. Turn the knife horizontal and run the blade up the skin to remove the meat. Step 5: Use tweezers to pick out any pin bones left in the fillet. The technique seems simple enough, but if you don’t have good, sharp, flexible knives that are sized correctly for the fish on the board, you’re going to make a mess out of your fillets. Havalon has come up with an all-in-one solution for this issue with its Talon system. With five styles of high-quality blades that all fit on the same handle, switching from a 7-inch blade down to a 5-incher or even down to a 3.5-inch utility blade is as easy as pressing a button with their Quik-Change II blade replacement system. The blades can be resharpened as well as replaced to make sure they are razor sharp when you need them. Also, with a handle that opens up, clean-up is both thorough and easy with the Havalon Talon system. Rinse your tools down and roll them up in the included canvas kit so they’ll be ready the next time you need them. And next time should be soon, because practice is the final and most important element in the perfect way to fillet. Go fishing enough, and you’ll be peeling off perfect fillets for the table in no time. Check out the Havalon Talon System at www.havalon.com.

uepos, Costa Rica: “Some Women Fear The Fire, Others Simply Become It” is the tag line that the Pescadora Billfish Championship used on their billboard announcement in Costa Rica’s, Marina Pez Vela. This tournament is bringing experienced and non-experienced female anglers, of all nationalities, together to compete for the title of the World’s Top Lady Anglers! Two top lady angler awards will be presented… one to the female who reels in the most fish (hook & hand), and the other to the female that hooks and reels in her own fish (per IGFA rules) along with overall team awards. “There is no other billfishing tournament in the world with this new competitive ground-breaking format, it gives every skill level the ability to be competitive!” says Samantha Mumford, Tournament Director. “Pescadora means “Lady Angler” in Spanish, so it’s a perfect fit.” The Pescadora Billfish Championship has also teamed up with the Gray FishTag Research Program and is excited to announce the Pescadora Tagging Program. A recent study done by the Outdoor Foundation found that women accounted for 34.8% of the 49.1 million Americans that went fishing in 2017. “Women from around the world have played significant roles in conservation, but few are aware of the tagging aspect of fishing and how much fun it can be” says Samantha Mumford “this program is a great way to educate and promote the tagging of fish which helps produce data that is desperately needed in the scientific community. We need to guarantee that our future generations can experience the love of fishing as we do now.” What will you name your tagged fish? Organizer of the tournament The tournament will be held in Quepos, Costa Rica at Marina Pez Samantha Mumford and friends Vela on February 21st-23rd, 2019. Join them for a fun, champagne filled weekend… catered to women, by women. Come be The Pescadora!! A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Seeds of Hope. Can a Fish Bring a Country Together Three Billboards Outside San Jose, Costa Rica
I
f you are driving from the airport towards San Jose, the capital of Costa Rica, you will pass two simple sets of three billboards each. Lettered in Spanish the signs basically translate into English as: 1. There are foreign boats fishing illegally in Costa Rica 2. They are taking our marine resources without permits 3. Together we can change this… Find out how at fecop.org The campaign billboards were modeled after the ones depicted in the award-winning film “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri.” Designed to be a simple yet effective message, it is estimated that more than 25 percent of all tuna taken by foreign purse seine boats in Costa Rican territorial waters goes unreported or is harvested by vessels not licensed to fish in Costa Rica with zero benefit to the country. Carlos Manuel Rodríguez, Minister of Environment and Energy, says that the country loses millions of dollars in the illegal fishing of tuna. According to the minister, of the total $50 million generated by the sale of licenses to foreign purse seiners, the country only receives $1.3 million. An estimated $12 million more is un-documented.
Through an analysis done by Conservation International and the Coast Guard using satellite technology, it was determined more than 100 vessels in 2016-2017 were involved in illicit activities. The yearly average legal take from these boats had been around 25,000 tons of tuna a year. Of this 9,000 tons goes to the cannery in Puntarenas and most of the rest never lands in Costa Rica. A study done by Federacion Costarricense de Pesca (FECOP) in 2013 showed Costa Rica only earned $37 a ton from tuna taken by foreign vessels. This triggered the first tuna reform legislation in 2014, which moved the tuna fleet 45 miles offshore and protected other important areas like the waters around Coco Island and a total of 200,000 square kilometers from purse seine fishing. In 2017 INCOPESCA, the governing board of fishing regulations in Costa Rica, reduced the number of legal licenses from 43 down to 13 and this year put limits on the overall harvest. The problem is with very little enforcement and control, the illegal fishing activity is bound to increase. The initial tuna harvest rules were enacted after sport and commercial fishermen set aside their differences and worked together to accomplish shared goals. FECOP staff recently met with commercial longliners in Puntarenas and Quepos to discuss the tuna industry and the market need for sustainably caught tuna. Sport fishermen are seeing noticeable increases in tuna catches in the protected 45-mile zone since the Tuna Decree went into effect in 2014.

FECOP Social-Economic Study Reveals Surprising Results
H
The amount of tuna being taken illegally or by foreign vessels remains a deterrent for licensed local commercial fishermen to switch to more selective gear like “green sticks,” or pole and line which have nearly zero bycatch and still make a reasonable profit. The longliners are receptive to using sustainable gear if it’s economically feasible. Tuna is a premium value species and if they were targeted selectively, it would take pressure off sharks and billfish as bycatch in longline fishery. The incidental catch rate of other species would drop drastically. FECOP also met with several marine-related non-government organizations to discuss the issue of sustainable fishing. TOURIST SPORT FISHING The recreational sport-fishing industry generates $380 million or more for the Costa Rican economy annually and supports thousands of jobs for locals. Critics claim sport fishing is a senseless sport and a form of cruelty to animals. COMMERCIAL FISHING Commercial harvest is also a multi-million dollar industry and the life blood of coastal communities. Critics claim the high rate of bycatch in certain types of fisheries is unsustainable and damages the environment. NGOs There are many non-governmental nonprofits headquartered in Costa Rica that specialize in marine conservation issues. Many have an accomplished track record. But conservation is a competitive business as organizations compete for limited donor contributions. Because of this, communication between the groups is often lacking. Many times groups are working on similar projects but don’t share information for fear of losing donations or credit for successes (which is parlayed into more donations). If communication among the groups was more common, positive changes could come more rapidly on smaller budgets. GENERAL PUBLIC Costa Rica has the highest cost of living in Central America. Many sectors have been on strike or protesting the proposed new tax reform for the past month. Critics are upset with tax breaks
companies receive whose products manufactured in Costa Rica cost nearly double domestically as the same product sold by the same company in neighboring countries. Many feel it is unfair to give away Costa Rica’s resources to other nations with little benefit while its citizens are asked to pay higher taxes. TUNA CANNING INDUSTRY The tuna cannery in Puntarenas employs more than 1,000 local workers and processes 9,000 tons of tuna annually. Because of the high demand of sustainably captured seafood products, the cannery is forced to import tuna harvested with sustainable gear from other countries to meet the demand. TUNA and DOLPHIN The fish and the mammals have a symbiotic relationship and swim together in the ocean. Most nets set by purse seiners are made over dolphins on the surface. Historically over 6 million dolphins perished with this method. By today’s standards, after the set one end of the net is lowered for the dolphins to escape to qualify for the “Dolphin Safe” label. The estimate of dolphin mortality is still around 1,000 a year in the tuna industry. Critics say the repeated netting of the same pods of dolphins should not qualify for the dolphin safe sticker on cans of tuna. Critics also question whether boats fishing illegally are careful about dolphin welfare. Boats have been observed throwing explosives helicopters or speed boats to herd the dolphin into the nets. There are also questions about how carefully the dolphins are released. The goal is to bring all these various interest groups together to make more tuna available to benefit Costa Rican fishermen and the country’s economy. An increase in sustainable harvest would have a domino effect. With more tuna available there would be less bycatch of sharks, billfish, turtles and marine mammals, plus better economic conditions for struggling coastal communities. The billboard campaign directs viewers to the FECOP website, www.fecop.org. A link on the site leads to a pétition to sign, urging decision-makers to support more responsible ocean management and fairness for the people of Costa Rica.
enry Marin project manager for Fecop along with Adriana Chacon from the University of Costa Rica recently concluded their evaluation of tourist and sport fishing in Costa Rica and it’s positive effects on local communities. Marin’s full report will be available after the New Year but some of the highlights revealed are: Sport and tourist fishing generate more than $500 million annually. 5.6% of tourism and 13% of tourism income is provided by sportfishing. Boat owners spend between $52 and $74 million on operating costs and maintenance going into local economies It also generates around $200 million to the transportation industry and $210 million to the hospitality business in Costa Rica. Sportfishing provides better opportunities for local families. Much better than average wages, better living conditions, and better overall quality of life. There is a significant impact to the livelihoods of the families if the fishing resources such as billfish and tuna are affected. (This provides a good, sustained and valid argument to claim more protection for those species) There is a significant impact to the livelihoods if there is good sportfishing infrastructure. And also If there is tourism related infrastructure. Quality of life in places like Quepos and Herradura is significantly better in comparison with other places. Formal education is not a deterrent, but technical capacitation is a key condition to improve livelihoods of the people and the families related to the sector. For more information contact Henry Marin at hmarin@fecop.org
Todd Staley has managed sportfishing operations in Costa Rica for 25 years. He has been involved with FECOP since its inception and is former President of the group and was co-recipient of IGFA’s Chester H. Wolfe award in 2015 for his conservation efforts in Costa Rica. reetings Anglers! Its mid-December as I write this report and we’ve just wrapped up an incredible ‘Green Season’ here in the Golfo Papagayo region of Guanacaste, Costa Rica. The rain has stopped and the breeze has picked up as we enter our Summer. At Dream On Sport Fishing, ‘Dream On’ our new Cabo 35’ Express is working hard and ‘Loretta’, our 32’ Blackfin Sportfisher gets a new CAT diesel tomorrow as we prepare for a busy high season. All of our new gear is set up and ready to go including something unique around here...a pair of shiny new Islander MR3s from Islander Precision Reels. These 1:1 ratio center pin reels are a work of art and you’ll never have more fun catching a fish than when you catch one on a ‘knuckle buster’! Looking toward January and February we generally see a slow down in the billfish bite. That being said, I caught my biggest marlin in January and my biggest sailfish in February. If that’s what you’re after, we’ll go a little farther and do whatever it takes to get you on billfish. The dorado bite is always on around here and we’ve been catching big numbers of big fish. The grouper and snapper bite is also year-round in these parts and its the best tasting grouper I’ve ever had. On to the highlight of January and February... Roosterfish! I say it over and
over again, there’s an all-tackle world record lurking out there. The current IGFA record is 114 lbs. There’s 100 pounders taken every year so its just a matter of time as we release all roosters to keep them growing. I’d say the record to beat is in the 20 lb test line class. That record stands at 85 pounds 13 ounces. ‘Dream On’ is rigged up with 2 Penn Fathom Master downriggers and we’re installing our brand new tuna tubes tomorrow as we use live Bonito to catch the big Roosters in 20-30 feet of water. Have questions or ready to book your Dream On Charter drop me a line at DreamOnSportFishing@gmail.com I personally respond to all emails and I’m at your service. Until next time anglers, Tight Lines & Pura Vida! Rick Graham represents Dream On Sport Fishing in Playas del Coco. After a lifetime of fishing as a hobbyist Rick decided one day to live his dream. FLAMINGO REPORT By Captain Skeet Warren • “Bushwacker Sportfishing”

anuary and February should bring some really good marlin fishing to the northwestern part of Costa Rica. By now the rainy season is over and the Papagayo winds are pretty much on their normal patterns. They blow hard to the north of us but since we are right on the edge we can run south, where the deep water comes in close to the beach and we are protected by the tall mountains. Our runs vary depending on how hard the winds are blowing, but we can almost always get out of them. If anyone tends to get sea sick you can get Transderm Scop patches from your doctor http://www.transdermscop.com/.
Our winter marlin bite consist of blue marlin, striped marlin and black marlin making it a great time of the year to catch a Grand Slam (3 billfish species in one day). Sailfish are almost always prevalent. The mahi and tuna should be biting as well. Inshore should be decent for roosterfish and snapper, depending on how hard the wind blows and how dirty the water gets. Our November/December offshore fishing has been good with tons of mahi, some tuna, marlin and sails. I expect the billfish bite to pick up soon. Inshore there have been some roosterfish, snapper and lots of mahi and bonito. I expect the inshore fishing to get better soon also. As the high season gets going there will be more boats out fishing which will help everyone. Be sure to book a well maintained boat with an experienced captain during this time of the year because the Papagayo winds can be dangerous if they are not respected, the boat is not maintained and/or the captain is not experienced with them. Come enjoy the great marlin fishing and get out of the cold weather in the US. Captain Skeet Warren owns and operates the Bushwacker, a 42’ Bertram out of Flamingo, Costa Rica. After graduating from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1980 he captained boats, fishing extensively, including Hawaii, the Caribbean, Central and South America, Australia, New Zealand, Madeira and Bermuda. He won the 2013 Top Tagging Captain in the Pacific Ocean for Sailfish. Some other notable catches include 13 blue and black marlin over 1000 lbs., 51 giant bluefin tuna in one day and 53 sailfish in one day. ere we go again, for most of us the season starts around the first part of November and continues through September. So far it has been very similar to last year, we have been loading up on dorado, following the faint foam and current lines to wherever they lead, often finding our best action within a mile of the beach. Further offshore we are still treated to large schools of spinner dolphin saturated with yellow fin tuna, although the average size so far seems to be in the 20lb range. There have been a few marlin and sails scattered around as well, but they really haven’t moved into our area in large numbers yet. Everything looks good for January and February, normally our busiest time of the year when all the “snow birds” flock south to our warm sunny weather. Fortunately the billfish usually begin to make their appearance in more abundant numbers as well. With all that said we look forward optimistically to the 2018/2019 fishing season as being one of memorable proportions. Originally from California, Rick Ruhlow moved to Costa Rica over 33 years ago. While exploring the country he fished Playa Naranjo (gulf of Nicoya), Quepos, Drakes Bay and Flamingo, before discovering Playa Carrillo almost 28 years ago. He was the Fishing Manager/Captain for the newly re-opened Hotel Guanamar for three years, before venturing off on his own. He has been owner/operator of Kingfisher Sportfishing since 1995. Contact Rick at kingfish@racsa.co.cr
he fishing has been a little up and down the last couple of months. A red tide made the inshore fishing a little difficult. This has luckily now cleared and good showing of sardines has made for some spectacular top water action for big jacks, mackerels and skipjack tuna.
The roosterfish have been around but in less numbers than normal for this time of year. The mahi mahi have been on fire with some days letting you catch all you can handle, mostly on topwater. The offshore has been good when we could get out with marlin, mahi, some tuna and a few sails in the mix. As the water clears and the dry season sets in, more sardines are expected to move in bringing jacks, mackerels, seabass, snappers and small tunas towards the gulf islands. This makes for fun fishing on light gear as most of the fish are not giant but they make up for it in numbers. Casting into schools is very effective and also light jigging is a good bet. The roosters will be close to the schools, eating sardines, jacks and tunas. Live bait is the easiest but when there are lots of fish boils, they can be taken on topwater as well. The offshore should really heat up as the sails start to migrate and the marlin action will also be good. The mahis are still around and will continue to show offshore and the tunas should also show up more often. All this makes for some of the best offshore action in the world!

LOS SUENOS OFFSHORE REPORT By Mike Erickson • Tres Ninas Tours and Sportfishing
J
anuary and February bring on some of the best pelagic bite found in Costa Rica. The calm seas and the typically good January-February bite are probably some of the main reasons the tourists show up and the charter operations get very busy these next few months. The sailfish bite has just started picking up with many boats starting to report single digit catches in December. There have also been many reports of blues, stripers, and even some black marlin catch and releases scattered throughout December. This has been proven by the big increase this time of year in “Grand Slam” reports.
Having just completed a major refit on our 32 Luhrs “Dream II” and on our 36 Luhrs “Los Suenos”, we are prepared for what we think will be a banner fishing season. Both of these boats located in Los Suenos are being booked through the Maverick Sportfishing center and through Tres Ninas Tours. If you haven’t booked your trip yet, give us a call or visit our website at www. Tresninastours.com . January and February look like they are lining up to bring some epic pelagic fishing in Costa Rica. The sailfish bite is expected to continue getting better as the fish migrate closer and closer to Costa Rica’s shores. The marlin bite should continue to be strong with many anticipated hookups at
“the corner”, “the craters’ and the “26” offshore from Los Suenos Resort and Marina. Dragging ballyhoo, artificials and, of course live bait, will be your best chance of getting that hookup of a life-time. If your looking for a good meal, I expect the mahi mahi bite to continue to be strong. Finding the occasional floating log or trash current should continue producing nice sized dorado. Tuna should also continue to be hooked on jigging an artificial squid up front of the occasional dolphin pods, or by live baiting in front of the pod with a nice bonita. Mike Erickson has been in and around the Sportfishing industry for 40 years. As the owner of Canvas Designers in West Palm Beach, Florida he became interested in the same hobby all his customers had. Sport-fishing. Five years ago he began expanding in Costa Rica, opening first a Canvas shop and then charter operations, a rental house, and a fishing magazine. As the owner of three charter boats in Quepos and two charter boats in Los Suenos, he is up front and close to the Costa Rican bite. All his boats can be booked at Tresninastours.com

Third Place - Spanish Fly Fourth Place - Good Day
Tara Wins 9th Annual Presidential Aruba Caribbean Cup Oranjestad, Aruba: Led by Capt. Alex Mansur, the team fishing aboard Tara led this year’s Presidential Aruba Caribbean Cup from start to finish. Along the way, the anglers released four blue marlin, two white marlin and five sailfish to walk away with first-place honors in this year’s ninth-annual event. This year was also a record-breaker, with the 16-boat fleet releasing a total of 109 billfish this year. This tops the previous event record, which was set in 2014. The fishing action continues to shine off this southern Caribbean nation.
In its inaugural year, the Dorado Derby brought together a total of 42 teams of anglers which ranged from world class tournament fisherman to first time anglers just looking to get their feet wet with a fun introduction to the ocean and sport fishing. The Marina was bursting with energy the night of registration and teams were here bright and early on Saturday morning eager to get out and enjoy the amazing Dorado bite which has been on FIRE here! The private and charter boats involved did NOT leave any doubts as to both the quality of our fleet, amazing vibrancy in our fishing waters, and talent of our captains, crews and competing anglers. The 42 teams weighed in a total of 2592 POUNDS of Dorado at the scales and based on the social media posts in the community, we feel confident that at least another 2500 pounds was enjoyed in ceviche, fish tacos, grill fish po boys, garlic butter mahi mahi, and a few dozen other Forest Gump inspired variations!
A special recognition has to mentioned to the AMAZING team from OFFSHORE LIFESTYLE who provided all of the white, blue and pink official Dorado Derby Angler shirts. Their high quality gear helped keep everyone protected from the sun and had us all looking sharp and had many of us picking up early holiday presents for ourselves or our friends. For those of you who missed out, check out their website, https:// offshorelifestyle.com/, where you can pick up some AMAZING deals on
Team Tara
In second place was Eric Mansur’s Alina team with 2,000 points. Mansur’s son Christian was the second-place angler in the Eagle Claw Grand Champion Angler Division with two white marlin releases. The team aboard Watashee placed third overall in the team division with 2,000 points. The winner of the Eagle Claw Grand Champion Angler was Garrick Robles. Fishing aboard Tara, Robles scored 1,700 points. Rudolpho Ras was the third-place angler with 1,200 points, fishing on Ola. For the tournament there were 109 billfish releases: 13 blue marlin, 22 white marlin and 74 sailfish, all on 30-pound test line and non-offset circle hooks. As previously mentioned, this marks an all-time tournament record for the Presidential Aruba Caribbean Cup. This event has become one of the most prestigious billfishing events in the Caribbean, thanks to the tremendous support from the people of Aruba. The event offered its participating teams a full three days of fishing followed by afternoon cocktail parties, with a welcome party at Varadero Marina, snacks and cocktails with entertainment each afternoon at the newly remodeled Fish House Island Bar and Restaurant and dinner with awards presentation also the Fish House Island Bar. As with all Presidential Challenge events, the Presidential Aruba Caribbean Cup provides financial support to the many conservation projects currently underway by The Billfish Foundation. The dates for the 10th Anniversary Presidential Aruba Caribbean Cup are October 17-20, 2019. QUEPOS INSHORE / OFFSHORE REPORT By Mikey Erickson • Coastal Angler Magazine
T
he months of November & December have given us great fishing, Inshore & Offshore. Plenty of big roosterfish, and cubera snapper’s off the rocks near Manuel National Park as the water clears up from a brutal Rainy Season. Nice size snook’s can be found near the river mouths, especially Naranjo River at the end of the National Park.
It’s truly an adrenaline rush raising mahi after mahi (to the point you start throwing them back because your freezer cannot fit that much fish), with a couple nice sailfish in between. Add in the occasional marlin or double hook-ups on marlin, chasing our teasers and getting them with the pitch bait (always have that pitch bait ready!). Personally, I raised my biggest blue marlin to date at 475lbs. And I see the months of January-February bringing out the Marlin in big numbers, as well as sails and the ever-present Mahi, with an occasional nice Wahoo if you are lucky. These fish are a nice treat but they are very elusive. All-in-all I see this year’s High Season to be one for the books.
Offshore fishing has been especially nice lately, with plenty of boats reporting slams and Grand Slams. The mahi bite has been ridiculously good on most trips ,coming home with 5-10 nice size mahis and a couple of BIG bulls. The key is finding the pods of dolphins chasing the bait. The mahi are schooling underneath and tearing into these bait balls, and the marlin and sailfish right under them are eating the smaller mahi and bait.

FRESHWATER REPORT
Jigging in Isla Negritos By Luis Monge Mata
J
ust 13 miles approximately coming out of Puntarenas we can reach a paradise of slow jigging. This area is characterized because we can find large queen corvinas, and other species such as: grouper, snapper, cabrilla, jack mackerel, mackerel among others. The corvina queen is a very technical fish to go after. The ideal for this fishing is to find the perfect tide. I recommend looking for small tides from 6 to 7 feet and that the tide stop be high or low. One is always in the morning and the other in the afternoon. These are the coolest hours of the day. The technique is to work the jig very slowly on the pure rocky bottom. Work it two meters maximum, and then go back down. It is indispensable to use a light rod for slow jigging and it is essential that you have a good captain to find the point with the GPS and place the boat in the best way to handle the drift. The use and reading of the fishfinder is essential for the fisherman to be successful. In this area we already have a world record in the category of all registered tackle of the species (cynoscion albus) 16.26 kg fisherman.

DRAKE BAY REPORT By Captain Willy Atencio

reetings from beautiful Drake Bay, Costa Rica on the southern Pacific coast. A good fishing report is always one that’s honest and not overly optimistic or “salesy”. Due to the large schools of Mahi or dorado and yellowfin tuna just 15 miles off Corcovado National Park; I can honestly report fishing has been excellent. In addition to these pelagic fish being closer to shore than usual, as an added bonus there are still some wahoo around Cano Island. The chefs at the lodges and local restaurants in Drake Bay have been serving incredible dinners with fresh ceviche, seared tuna, wahoo sashimi and grilled mahi. If you are a seafood lover, it doesn’t get any better than this. Our clients are literally eating fish that are hours old instead of days. The near shore rooster bite in November and December has been excellent when the weather and water conditions cooperate. Roosterfish don’t really care about sun, rain or wind, but they demand clean water. As we approach the next four months, the rain decreases significantly (some months almost no rain at all) the water clears and this greatly increases your chances to catch roosters. The bottom fishing for grouper, snapper, amberjack and pompano is usually very good all year long. I have been a professional Captain for over 20 years and grew up in Drake Bay. I literally have hundreds of spots marked where we consistently catch fish. The Reel Escape and the Reel Time have the latest in Garmin technology making getting to the best spots easy and making efficient use of our fishing time. If you want a great day on the water and enjoy fishing, we have two boats to choose from, depending on your budget and preference. We are getting very full for January and February so I encourage you to reserve your day on the water as soon as possible. Until next time, tight lines . . .
One of several nice mahi caught by happy guests staying at Drake Bay Getaway The Captain of Fish Drake Bay, Willy Atencio is a native of the local area. Fish Drake Bay is the premier sport fishing charter service in Drake Bay, the surrounding Osa peninsula and Corcovado National Park. Captain Willy is considered one of the best Captains in Costa Rica with over 20 years experience. Willy has captained sport fishing yachts ranging from 31-47 feet in the USA, Caribbean and Costa Rica. He has also fished in numerous big game fishing tournaments including the Offshore World Championships for 5 consecutive years. Contact Willie at info@fishdrakebay.com

arlin on the menú! Not in restaurants but on bucket list menus. At press time we were getting one to three shots a day in and in an area accessible to day boats. Dorado have been everywhere, and tuna very common. With the good supply of food source for marlin available, they should be around for the next couple of months. Tuna haven´t been that difficult to find but getting them to eat might take a little imagination and an ability to mix it up. Try live bait, cedar plugs, or cast a popper. Many anglers prefer to replace the treble hooks that come on a popper with a single sturdy hook. Inshore expect roosterfish and jacks in the surf and the same, mixed with snapper and African pompano, over the shallower reefs. As you go a little deeper, some grouper and amberjacks should be biting and only getting better as we move into late February.
Billfish action off the Osa Peninsula
German Bustos has been head captain at Crocodile Bay Resort for the last dozen years after working on prestigious sportfishing boats all throughout Central America for nearly 20 years. He is one of the most requested captains at Crocodile Bay.

FLY FISHING REPORT By Mark Evans
S
ummer time is upon us and that means one thing! No rain… No excuses! Spring fishing Nov/Dec in the tropics, was epic this year in the freshwater arena. Good numbers of guapote were released on the fly in various parts of the country from East coast to West. Our buddy Mariano Arrea had one day of 20+ guapote releases on the popper and of course the big one that got away :) The 506Outdoors boys
throughout most of Nov/Dec and we are very pleased to see the health of the rivers and numbers of fish being released. The wild “Tico Trout” are a beautiful example of a tropical rainbow trout and should be on everyone’s list. On the saltwater side of things, we have snook being caught on the fly in the Guanacaste region. As I have said before, never let a little rain stop you from fishing in Costa Rica and this proved itself true for Stefan in Playas del Coco with two nice fish caught right off the beach on a rainy Saturday morning. January and February are prime time for fly in Costa Rica, from sea to summit. Choose your passion and go! Keep it wet, Mark
hooked in to some serious machaca’s in November tipping the scales at 3kg+ on several occasions. With the higher waters levels the bigger fish moved further upstream giving us some great days on the water and good release numbers.
Having graduated from cane pole fishing as a kid to more technical equipment these days, Mark Evans prefers floating the many rivers of Costa Rica in his kayak, with a fly rod in hand. Recipe Corner Welcome, Bienvenidos! One of our most popular sauces that we frequently get asked for the recipe for is our Peanut sauce! It typical goes on our chicken skewers, but we have used it with beef satays and it can be used as a base for other sauces made with similar flavors. As chefs, we sometimes like to complicate and add fancy high priced ingredients to seem like we are earning our paycheck. Can I tell you, this recipe is really this simple!! And it can be enhanced with other flavors. I’ll give you both options.
Jimmy T’s Peanut Sauce GET AND PREPARE THE GOODS • 400 grams smooth peanut butter • 1/2 cup soy sauce • 1/2 cup sweet chili sauce • 1 1/2 cup of water BRING IT ALL TOGETHER Place all ingredients in a food processor and spin until smooth. And thats it . . . honestly. MORE IDEAS Now if you want to fancy it up, adding chopped pickled ginger, ginger water, toasted sesame oil. Finish your presentation with unagi sauce, sweet chili sauce and sesame seeds to make it look 5-Star for your family and friends!! Enjoy, Pura Vida. Look us up for catering and like us on facebook!! Happy eating, Chef Jimmy T
As a former chef on a megayacht, Jimmy T’s owner Jimmy Tancrell, often had difficulty finding local suppliers who could provide the foodstuffs and condiments necessary for the gourmet meals expected by his clients. During long days at sea under star-filled skys, the crew and staff would talk about their dreams of ‘life after yachting’. And for Jimmy Tancrell a dream was born … to provide a service for other ‘yachty’ chefs who were in the same boat as Jimmy so far as the need for adequately stocking their galleys with condiments, spices, good beef, fresh vegetables, fruits and cheeses. Life after yachting led him to Los Suenos at Herradura on Costa Rica’s Central Pacific coast where Jimmy had already discovered the year ’round availability of wonderful fresh fruits and vegetables offered on Fridays at Jaco’s Mercado Movil or farmers market. A store became available dockside at Los Suenos and Jimmy T’s Provisions and Gourmet foods opened in May 2007.

T
he operations of the Exuma Cays Land & Sea Park (ECLSP) have changed over its more than half century of existence. Designated a “no take marine reserve in 1986, no fishing or taking of any organism (including plants and shells) is allowed. The ECLSP is known internationally for its pristine marine environment and offers visitors exceptional diving and recreational opportunities. Recently the Marine Conservation Institute announced that the Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park earned a Platinum Global Ocean Refuge Award. Joining a prestigious group of ten marine protected areas (MPAs) that comprise the Global Ocean Refuge System means that Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park meets the highest science-based standards for biodiversity protection and best practices for management. Each year, thousands of vessels visit and overnight in the ECLSP. Years ago, the Bahamas National Trust introduced a mooring and anchorage system with fees to reduce the impact. A new fee structure will come into force effective Jan. 1. Mooring fees are based on the size of the vessel and range from $20 to $150 per day. Daily/nightly anchorage fees are 50 cents or $1 per foot depending on the length of the vessel. Dive fees are $10 per diver. For more information, visit www.bnt.bs/exuma-cays-land-seapark/.

FRESHWATER
Since 2015, Frabill has continued to set the quiet standard in bucket conversion. The Frabill Whisper Quiet Aerator system is a portable, aeration design that provides the utmost discretion when fishing with live bait. Constructed with 75 years of experience, the Whisper Drive Aeration Motor has been specifically designed and tested to keep saltwater baitfish and crustaceans healthy and active while emitting minimal sound. With a couple of batteries, the Whisper Quiet Aerator converts any size cooler or bucket into an oxygen-rich livewell. Frabill’s top-of-the-line signature yellow air stone creates enough bubbles to effectively aerate up to 15 gallons of water. As a result of its over-engineered rugged design, Frabill’s Whisper Quiet Aerator has a long shelf life. The aeration system includes premium water-resistant internal parts that help prevent corrosion and won’t let an angler down. Never be surprised by battery rot again.

Surprising Winter is the Best Planting Time
I am often asked when is the best time to plant fruiting plants. My answer is usually the same; the best time is 20 years ago or today. The second best time to plant is during the winter months. Plants are dormant, and can be easily shipped and planted with no stress on the plant because there is not a lot of maintenance once the plant or tree has been planted. Simply dig a good hole, water thoroughly
at planting, and take the rest of the winter off. Even though there are no signs of growth above ground, the root systems will have time to get adjusted to their new location and begin to initiate new root growth. There are plenty of advantages of growing your own edibles. First of all, you know what has been done over the course of the growing season from a chemical stand point. Second, the fruit just taste
better coming out of your home orchard versus buying fruit from the grocers that have little to no flavors. Thirdly, it is good for your soul and you will feel more connected to the environment and nature. Whether it is an apple tree, muscadine vine or a blueberry bush; now is the time to plant. Let’s Grow Together. Greg Ison, Ison’s Nursery and Vineyards, 800733-0324, www.isons.com
