Access weather and fishing data via satellite up to 200 miles from the contiguous U.S. shoreline.
SiriusXM Marine Weather overlays directly on your chartplotter while fishing coastal or offshore waters and provides two vital services for anglers. First, and most importantly, it helps you detect, monitor and avoid bad weather without needing a cell signal. Storms can build quickly at sea, and the numerous, selectable overlay options within the SiriusXM menu lets you tailor the display to your desired level to make sure you and your crew stay safe. In addition to safety, the marine weather overlay can also help you catch more fish. Graphic displays of sea surface temperature contours and wind directions and speeds help you locate tide and current edges, and see where bait fish might be stacked up, giving you a definitive edge when trying to find the bite. With key information needed to find the locations in which fish are most likely to appear, anglers can save time and fuel while fishing.
H E R E I S W H AT T H E P R O S S AY A B O U T S I R I U S X M M A R I N E ’ S S E R V I C E S Rain during a day of offshore fishing is uncomfortable, frustrating and can ruin a trip. We continuously use our SiriusXM Marine Weather to monitor the weather pattern the night before a trip, the morning of, and throughout the day. We’ve been able to track the direction of a storm prior to leaving port and while fishing offshore. The comfort of knowing we can stay ahead of, or just behind, a fast moving storm gives us great peace of mind!
Without question, one of Team Canyon Runner’s most valuable tools is the implementation of SiriusXM’s sea surface temperature overlays on our plotters. For example, we can manipulate the SST data with a range from, say, 68 to 85 degrees. That allows the chart to recalibrate the new 68-degree water temp as blue in color and the 82-degree water temp as red. Seeing a hard, defining break is irreplaceable. It has steered our boats to the fish countless times.
Yesterday was perfect example of why I use SiriusXM satellite weather. I was charter fishing 30 miles NW of Key West knowing a front was coming. Having checked the wind barbs in the front I could see they were 200 miles away moving NW at 30mph. I was able to finish my charter and beat the front home safely and still get a full day of fishing in. Well worth the price of the SiriusXM service.

Product Review COBRA MARINE JUMPACK XL H2O The JumPack XL H2O is Cobra’s most versatile and powerful portable power source and jump starter yet. It enables you to jumpstart your car, truck, RV or marine engine and charge your mobile devices in all weather conditions. It is designed to jump start marine outboards, large V8 gasoline and diesel engines direct-from-the-battery or from the 12V port, and it is compliant with the latest safety UL standard. Most jump starters only work with cables connected to the battery. The JumPack can also jump a battery via the 12V port inside the vehicle, which means the user can stay safely inside the vehicle while the battery charges. The rugged and waterproof design makes it the perfect portable power device for any adventure. This compact unit is lightweight and powerful, with a lithium-cobalt battery that holds a charge longer and is smaller than traditional jump starters. An easy to view tri-color LED indicates the status of the JumPack and when it’s safe to start the vehicle. It runs its own self diagnostics to make sure the cables are attached properly, and if not, the JumPack will not allow itself to be used. This protects the user and the vehicle. Dual 3 Amp USB ports allow for rapid charging of two portable devices simultaneously, and it has a built-in super-bright LED flashlight, strobe and SOS LED. The unit includes jumper cables with clamps, a 12-volt charger cable, AC charge adapter and a neoprene carrying case.
Paired with video-enabled sonar units like Raymarine’s new Axoim Pro or eSeries, an Aqua-Vu underwater camera becomes the ultimate fishfinding machine. Whether it’s under ice or on open water, watching the fish and your lure in real-time takes the excitement of sight fishing to another level. It also gives obvious advantages to the angler. With Aqua-Vu, you’ll know exactly what fish is down there and be able to adjust the presentation to home in on what action triggers the fish to bite. But that’s just the beginning. All anglers know how important water temperature is to finding feeding fish. Probes equipped on the camera reveal water temperature at the depth you’re fishing, which can be markedly different from the temperature at the surface. With that information, it is easier than ever to find the conditions you’re looking for. Aqua-Vu can be plugged directly into a Raymarine sonar unit and viewed on the screen. This sonar, GPS and video combination is a powerful tool to make you a better angler, and they can all be viewed at the same time. Identify structure with sonar, drop a camera down to see exactly what it is and what species are holding on it, and then mark it on the GPS. It can all be achieved on the same unit.

In February, Raymarine partnered with FLIR to bring to market its most advanced marine radar system. Quantum 2, with Doppler target identification, is designed for integration with Raymarine’s awardwinning Axiom multifunction displays to enhance boaters’ situational awareness by intelligently identifying moving and static targets at both long and short ranges. Quantum 2 is tuned to detect moving versus stationary targets. It color codes moving targets to indicate whether they are getting closer (red) or moving away (green). In addition, Quantum 2 brings a new Safety Sector feature that highlights and color codes potentially dangerous static targets within 200 meters in front of the vessel. Advanced users will appreciate Quantum 2’s 25-target mini-automatic radar plotting aid (MARPA). Developed for the United States Coast Guard, Quantum 2’s MARPA feature is doppler-assisted, meaning inbound contacts can be acquired automatically by the radar display to ease navigation in congested waters. Quantum 2 also features CHIRP Pulse Compression technology, which uses compressed radar pulses to display targets like boats, landmarks, rocks and weather cells with unsurpassed resolution and separation. Quantum 2’s flexible design allows for Wi-Fi networking to Raymarine multifunction displays (MFDs) or via traditional wired configuration, making installation much easier and eliminating the need for additional radar cabling or interface boxes.
ACR Electronics is making life easier and safer for boat owners with pre-packed premium boating Survival Kits. Affordably priced and ideal for any boater, the kits include essential products needed to quickly abandon ship and alert the Coast Guard. Boaters carrying one of the bags on-board will be equipped with an ACR Emergency Position-Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) or Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) operating on the 406 MHz frequency. The beacons can be quickly and easily activated in an emergency to enable responders to identify and locate a boater in distress. The kits also contain a variety of other products including an abandon ship bag, strobe lights, signal mirror and a whistle to further help rescuers. ACR Survival Kits give you peace of mind knowing the safety of your family and crew is ensured beyond the minimum U.S. Coast Guard requirements. When time is short and there is no help in sight, boaters can grab the bag and depend on the kit for a swift rescue.
If you need compact, powerful GPS tracking, AtlasTrax MiniTrax is the system for you. The MiniTrax compact GPS satellite tracking system is only 3” x 2”. It comes battery powered, but can also be hardwired or used with a 12 volt charger. MiniTrax qualifies as a required GPS tracker for insurance companies and provides great mapping features. Alert messages are sent by email or text to notify the user of movement. A messagehandling server gives access to all trips and loved ones can check the exact boat location with the click of a mouse. With several satellite message plans available, you can also see data such as mileage, time length of trips, latitudes and longitudes, headings and speeds. MiniTrax is fully waterproof, has daily battery reports and is ideal for boats, aviation, jet skis, ATVs, RV’s, golf carts, construction and transportation equipment. The new Altasalarm audible/visual system with a 60-foot cable wrap, door hatch and canvas sensor can notify you with a loud siren if someone activates a sensor in the event of attempt theft.

Product Review FURUNO INTRODUCES NEW DUAL TOUCH-SCREEN BLACK BOX OFFERING Furuno set a new standard for touch-screen technology when they introduced NavNet TZtouch2, the first multi-function display (MFD) to utilize edge-swipe technology. In February, they raised the bar on innovative navigation solutions with the introduction of a Black Box NavNet TZtouch2 system, the TZT2BB. This next step in the NavNet series takes the feature set of the award-winning TZtouch2 and packs it into a brand-new black box configuration with dual-display capability. The TZT2BB packs enough processing power to drive two separate touch-screen displays, delivering twice the navigation potential from a single, compact black box unit, for the most technologically advanced all-glass bridge available. TZT2BB can drive two independent monitors such as Furuno’s 17”, 19” or 24” Multi Touch Displays, which allows you to seamlessly move from one screen to the other. It has the capability to handle different monitor resolutions and aspect ratios, which is convenient if you want to utilize existing monitors of different sizes. It also supports full HD video input in HDMI format, for surveillance cameras, sonar or entertainment systems. The TZT2BB operates with the same intuitive Multi Touch interface as the current TZtouch2 MFDs. You can add an optional external keyboard. Customers looking to upgrade from a NavNet 3D Black Box system will be happy to learn that the external TZT2BB keyboard is the same size as their existing keyboard, making it an easy swap, with no cutting. A retrofit kit will be available as an option to convert NavNet 3D’s MFDBB keyboard for use with the new TZT2BB. Similar to the 12.1” and 15.6” NavNet TZtouch2 models, the TZT2BB leverages Furuno’s award-winning network products, including a variety of NXT
and X-Class radars, fishfinders, multi-beam sonar, instruments and other sensors. Radars are available ranging from a compact, 4kW Solid-State Doppler Dome to a super powerful 25kW Open Array. For fishfinders, the TZT2BB includes a built-in dual-frequency Furuno Fish Finder with RezBoost, which creates images 4 to 8 times sharper than a conventional fishfinder. In addition to the built-in Fish Finder, Furuno has impressive add-on options that include the DFF3D Multi-Beam Sonar and DFF1-UHD TruEcho CHIRP Fish Finder. You can both the internal fish finder and the DFF3D Multi-Beam Sonar simultaneously. The unit comes preloaded with raster, vector and fishing charts for the Western Hemisphere in MapMedia’s MM3D format. The U.S. NOAA raster and vector charts are free, while the preloaded Navionics and C-Map charts are available for purchase. Furuno also provides free satellite photography for the U.S. that can be downloaded from their website. As with the TZTL12F and TZTL15F models, tablets and smartphones can be accessed via built-in WiFi, with several free apps available on both Apple and Android platforms, allowing you to remotely view and control your navigation network. Furuno continues to break new ground with their latest Black Box, the TZT2BB. The TZT2BB is perfect for larger helms to display all navigation, radar, fishfinder and instrument sensors across dual displays. For more information on the NavNet TZT2BB, contact Furuno at (360) 8349300 or visit them online at www.FurunoUSA.com.

he gripe came from up on the poling platform, “You won’t see any fish when you’re sitting in the boat blasting Garth Brooks.” Maybe tarpon on this particular stretch of the Florida coast don’t like country music. Or maybe it had something to do with the sound system, which was garbage. Over the wind and waves, the noise rattling from the speakers was barely discernible as music, so we turned it off… and didn’t spot the first fish through an 8-hour day on the water. It’s during slow trips like these when good tunes are most important. The songs become the soundtracks to our adventures. That’s why you owe it to your fishing buddies to have a good sound system on the boat. When it comes to sound quality, there isn’t a company out there better than Miramar, Florida’s JL Audio. Since the mid1970s, when co-founders Lucio Proni and Jim Birch built speakers during summer break from college, the company has grown into one of the most respected audio brands in the world. JL Audio stepped into the marine market in 2005, and in 2016 they introduced the MediaMaster 100 (MM100), which quickly became the high-end source unit of choice for boaters who really care about sound quality. The source unit is where it all starts. It’s the head unit that receives input from your music-playing device and channels it through the amplifiers to the speakers. The source unit is also the dashboard where you control it all. Off the bat, it was apparent JL Audio had designed an exceptional unit, built to stand up to the rigors of sun and salt with all the features expected of a modern sound system. Already known for producing marine amplifiers, speakers and subwoofers of superb quality, JL Audio now had the final piece for a full marine sound system. It was an important step for a brand that values audio quality above all else. “There is nothing else in the marine market like it,” said Alan Wenzel, JL Audio’s VP of business development and strategic planning. “Others may have operating systems with more bells and whistles, but their sound doesn’t come close to ours.” Boaters appreciated the sweet, crisp sound pumping at 4 volts through the RCA jacks. The signal is noticeably clearer than the industry-standard 2-volt output. And the unit’s excellent control flexibility allows for a wide range of zone configurations, which is critical to overcoming the ambient noise of the marine environment. Modern source units are expected to provide connectivity with a host of different devices, and MM100 does this with Bluetooth and USB as well as an analog auxiliary input, so you can even plug in a tape deck and play your old Grateful Dead bootlegs if you want to. unit is SiriusXM ready and includes a built-in AM/FM/Weatherband tuner. It is also NMEA 2000 certified, which means it will communicate with compatible multi-function displays from brands like Simrad, Lowrance, Garmin and more. The physical design of the MM100 is what you would expect from a top-of-the-line piece of marine equipment. It looks cool, and it’s intuitive, with a bright, full-color LCD screen and large, backlit controls that are easy to use while in motion. There’s even the option to add remote controls. What JL Audio launched in 2016 remains the best sounding source unit available. A long list of high-quality boat builders jumped on board to install JL Audio systems standard. “The premier brands are the ones we wanted to partner with,” said Wenzel, “especially the ones that are really conscious of the quality of their product.” The MM100 is a high-end unit designed to drive high-end systems for the kind of control, sound and power demanded by audiophiles. And the price point reflects that. Soon after the release of the MM100, Wenzel said customers began asking for a source unit with built-in power and a more mainstream price point. Not everyone needs to hear the triangle ping in Vivaldi’s Four Seasons across the deck of a sport fishing yacht. In response, JL Audio engineers developed the Media Master 50, which becomes available on the retail market this month. By trimming a few of the bells and whistles off the MM100, JL Audio engineers developed a source unit that has all of the sound quality of its top-of-theline unit, but on a smaller scale, perfect for boats that can get by on two sound zones instead of four. With built-in amplifiers capable of producing 100 watts of high-fidelity output, the MM50 is also NMEA certified and compatible with most everything the MM100 is. And like all JL Audio products, accurate sound reproduction was the No. 1 focus in its design. Wenzel said JL Audio would never release anything that doesn’t meet their stringent criteria for sound quality and durability in the marine environment. This attention to quality is what built the JL Audio brand. “Because we are a true audio company, we know a lot about audio reproduction,” he said. “We do everything we can to exceed the standards. We do thousands of hours of listening testing as well as environmental testing before anything is manufactured.” While most audio companies farm out their designs, JL Audio has dozens of electrical and audio engineers on staff. Their marine speakers, assembled at their Miramar headquarters undergo 2,000 hours of salt and UV testing in onsite environmental chambers, which is four times the industry standard of 500 hours. JL Audio caters to boaters who value sound quality in an onboard sound system. With the MM100 and the MM50, the company now offers the source unit to run the highest quality JL Audio sound systems for any size boat or budget. For more information, visit www.jlaudio.com.

L.L.BEAN CAMPSITE ORGANIZER No meal tastes better than one cooked out in the open around a campfire. However, around the campfire definitely isn’t the easiest place to prepare a meal. When you’re tired of using tree stumps to cook on and plastic bins to store all your gear, it’s time to look into the L.L.Bean Campsite Organizer. This portable outdoor organizer features three interior shelves for storing camp kitchen utensils, picnic gear and grilling tools. It’ll keep your gear in order, and the aluminum top doubles as extremely handy counter space. Open, this 31.5”x25”x20” pantry keeps your food and gear organized and out of the way. Folded down to just 25”x20”x4”, it’s easy to pack for the road. The Campsite Organizer is built of aluminum and 600D polyester fabric with heavy-duty hinges, so it’s tough and lightweight. It comes with its own carrying sack, making it extremely portable. Anyone who has ever spent a few nights in the outdoors knows the joys of a well-organized campsite as well as how quickly a campsite can become a jumbled mess. The Campsite Organizer goes a long way toward creating happy campers.
STORMPROOF SWEETFIRE A blazing fire is integral to the camping experience, and in emergency situations the light and heat of a good fire can save your life. The problem is, emergency situations that require a fire usually come with the same conditions that make lighting a fire difficult. With UCO’s new Stormproof Sweetfire, you’ll never be caught without a fire again—regardless of weather conditions. Stormproof Sweetfire is an entirely new take on tinder. UCO took its eco-friendly Sweetfire Strikeable Fire Starter, which is made from a renewable sugarcane waste product called bagasse, and added a proprietary Stormproof tip to create a product that’s totally reliable, whatever the weather. Stormproof Sweetfire’s unique point shapes come connected and ready to break off, and each has an integrated windproof and waterproof match head. An individual point will burn up to seven minutes, which is enough to get a fire started in any conditions. Whether you’re building a campfire to sit around in the evening or if it’s a fire to stave off hypothermia, you’ll be glad to have Stormproof Sweetfire when it’s wet outside.

POPTICALS POP-OUT SUNGLASSES
Good sunglasses are a necessity whenever you’re spending time outside. On the boat or streamside at a campsite, the gritty dampness of the outdoors combined with poor packing and storage options can wreak havoc on expensive, high-quality lenses. Popticals takes packing and storage issues out of the equation with premium quality and stylish shades that fold down to a compact size to fit into a protective case that is small enough to be slipped in a pocket or clipped to just about anything with an attached carabiner. They are the perfect sunglasses for camping because you’ll never have to worry about them being damaged when they’re not on your face. And when packing space is at a premium, Popticals’ small profile and light weight means they’ll be out of the way yet easily accessible. Featuring NYDEF nylon lenses manufactured for Popticals by Carl Zeiss Vision, Popticals are high-perfomance polarized sunglasses. Nylon offers the same clarity of glass but weighs much less, which makes them more comfortable. Backpackers, who are always looking for ways to shave weight, will appreciate how light they are.

alter had just returned from 30 days in Worcester, Mass., helping insured residents with their claims from the most recent bomb cyclone that hit the region. He and his fishing partner of 25-plus years, Kathy, a Dwyer High School geometry teacher, decided to go trolling for dolphin. They headed out the Lake Worth Inlet at 7 a.m. due east at 7 to 8 mph, trolling a pair of small, naked single-hooked ballyhoo and a tuna feather in their 2001, 25-foot Target with a Yamaha 250. It was a beautiful day on the water, with calm seas and a small ground swell. They were about 16 miles offshore when Walter saw a bill slap at the bait rigged on a 4/0 Penn Offshore Senator, loaded with 30-lb. Ande high-vis line. A school of bait had passed under the boat just moments before. Walter let the line free spool and then set the hook. The fish sounded and peeled off all but about 50 yards of line. Kathy quickly cleared the other lines and went chasing after the fish, while Walter recovered line. The fish came back up and jumped within 300 yards of the boat – a beautiful marlin! It jumped and thrashed about, then sounded again, stripping the reel of line. This time, phone in hand, Kathy chased down the marlin with Walter cranking on the Penn reel giving the Star Rod Deluxe a workout. They were able to pull up alongside the marlin, snapping a few photos in the water, before the marlin would swim away. The next round, the marlin did a triple jump right off the bow of the boat. As the fish arced the vessel, Kathy quickly snapped off several pictures… of herself. She had accidently switched the view of the camera. The struggle continued for four hours, with the marlin circling to the left—Nascar formation, peeling off line and Walter reeling it back in at least 30 times. As the fish would get close enough to see the white bottom of the Target boat, it would stripe up with markings a foot tall. Walter estimated the tail to be at least 4-feet and the marlin to be 10 to 12 feet in length. Kathy took the fight for a brief 15-20 minutes, giving Walter a break. She held her own with the marlin. They had drifted with the current about 26 miles offshore and north when the marlin made one last pass. Walter reeled the line until the swivel was about 3 feet from the tip of the rod when the knot broke. The marlin swam off with a bit of leader and a circle hook. Walter looked at the Ande line. It had stretched to the point that the color changed, but it never broke. That Feb. 17, 2018 will be a fishing trip the Mulfords, of Palm Beach Gardens, will not forget. CA Florida STAR, the state’s largest family friendly saltwater fishing competition, is back with changes that will make the 2018 event the best ever. This 101-day fishing event, presented by Yamaha, is conducted by Coastal Conservation Association (CCA) Florida, the state’s leading organization for marine fisheries conservation, education and advocacy. With more than $500,000 in prizes, the event will run from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day. During this timeframe, registered anglers who catch qualifying fish will be eligible for prizes that include a brand new truck or boat, motor and trailer packages to all-terrain vehicles, marine electronics, scholarships and more. Unlike traditional fishing tournaments, STAR focuses on conservation and uses the social media-based event to educate the public on the importance of protecting Florida’s marine resources. The format allows anglers to fish on their own schedule all summer long. A “catch, photo and release” competition, STAR’s smartphone app eliminates the requirement to harvest or capture and transport fish. New details for the 2018 event include: • Kids - Continued free registration for current New Tide Members (CCA members) ages 6 – 17. • Guides - Guides are eligible to compete in their own division for Tagged Redfish and Tagged Dolphin. • Prizes in the Tagged Redfish Division include a Contender 22 Sport, a GMC Sierra, a Pathfinder 2200TRS, a Hewes Redfisher 16, a Carolina Skiff 21 Ultra and Cottonmouth Aluminum Bay/Flats boat, all powered by Yamaha. Prizes for the first two youth anglers in this division include two Carolina Skiff 16JVX CC boats, powered with Yamaha 40 HP motors and trailers. New divisions include: • Tagged Dolphin Division (mahi mahi) - a minimum of 20 tagged dolphin will be released in the state’s waters, with the first registered angler who catches one eligible to win $10,000 in cash or scholarship. • Non-tagged Redfish Division presented by Atlas Jack Plates - even non-tagged redfish are eligible for prizes. • Grouper Division - special prizes for black, gag, red and scamp grouper. • Tarpon Division presented by Humminbird - one winner of a $10,000 prize package will be determined by a random drawing of all catch photos entered in the drawing. Eligibility requirements include proper handling and resuscitation of the catch. Other STAR divisions include: • Youth Scholarship Division presented by Academy Sports + Outdoors - offering over $100,000 in scholarships from Realtree Fishing, Reel Legends Apparel, Southeastern Environmental Solutions, Talk of the Town Restaurant Group and Pasco County Office of Tourism Development. • Power Pole Conservation and Costa Kick Plastic Trash Division - assisting with data collection for potential use in stock and habitat assessment and helping with debris collection. • Lionfish Division - helping with the removal of this invasive species. • Open, Ladies, Fly, Kayak and Professional Guides divisions – targeting various species. Most division winners are determined by a random drawing, a format that encourages participants of all ages to protect and conserve Florida’s fisheries. Register early for an opportunity to win in the weekly Freebie Friday Engel Cooler Drawing! Entry fees are reasonable at $75 for non-CCA members and include a one-year membership. Entry is $40 for current CCA members. For more information on STAR or to register, visit the organization’s Facebook page or ccaflstar.com.

Bring the Heat
By Cory Gurman
S
chool is almost out, and the heat of summer is right around the corner. So what does this mean for catching fish during the summertime? Depending on your target species, you might have to slightly change your techniques to stay on top of the fish. Bass fishing during the summer can be hit and miss sometimes, but their higher metabolism coupled with the shad spawn will likely help you out with catching some nice fish. With so many waterways that hold bass, it doesn’t take much effort to make a quick trip to a nearby pond. South Florida’s Sammy Suarez, 14, started fishing a couple of years ago and has been honing her skills at catching both largemouth and peacock bass out of local canals and golf course ponds.
During the summer months, she and her dad catch really nice fish in the early mornings and late afternoons using a topwater lure like the Rebel Pop R and popping it at a medium speed. The fish in these canals and ponds regularly approach 5 pounds and sometimes exceed that. Another thing that happens during the summer is the increased growth of vegetation, which in turn brings out frogs in big numbers. To match the hatch, I like to throw a Booyah Pad Crasher at any weeds or vegetation I see and start a slow retrieve. When the bass blows up on it, make sure not to set the hook right away. Wait a second to make sure he has it, and bury the hook. There are also plenty of saltwater opportunities in the summer, speckled sea trout being one of my favorites. Finding the right place to fish for them and understanding their preferred hunting grounds is essential in securing a delicious meal. Trout are ambush feeders, which means they like to be still and attack prey as it swims by. Grass, rocks, oyster bars and docks all make for great structure where trout stage, waiting for a meal. The presence of current is important, since it is what pushes baitfish through the structure where trout are lying ready to ambush. If these two elements—current and structure—line up, you are in a good place to fish for trout. Live shrimp under a popping cork, jig heads tipped with a soft plastic and topwater lures are all good choices. Trout tend to bite better on overcast days, especially if you’re using topwater lures. Remember to try and match the hatch with whatever baitfish you are seeing in the area. These fisheries will surely make it worthwhile to get out and soak up some rays this summer, as well as to enjoy a fun family outing during the most relaxing season of the year in the great outdoors. Cory Gurman is a freshman at Ponte Vedra High School in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. Besides reveling in the great outdoors, Cory enjoys spending time with his three golden retrievers and rooting for the Atlanta Braves. Follow him on Instagram @fishhunter1119.

each camping is an easy and fun way to spend time with family. I am fortunate to live about an hour from the beach, and each summer we take advantage of our close proximity. It’s a great place to fish, swim, sit by the campfire… and do it all over again the next day. The key to a great time is preparation. I like to gear up for two types of fishing: trout and larger game. I bring light trout tackle for throwing lures in the morning and evening. I always have a few top-
waters and slow-sinking hard baits, a ¾-oz. silver spoon and a select few slow-sinking soft plastics. I also like to bring some larger surf tackle for throwing live or cut bait at night for bull reds and sharks. A cast net is always good to have for when schools of bait are within range. A good tip if you decide to catch or buy live bait is to bring something along to tie your bait bucket to and leave it in the surf. We typically have a breeze to keep the bugs somewhat at bay, but always bring your repellant and long sleeves to keep you comfortable. When it comes to the kids, I always ask them what they want to bring for fun and food. I don’t skimp on either of these, and I usually go overboard to make sure we all have a great time. We also love the campfire, so I always bring ample amounts of wood. It can be tough, if not impossible, to find on the beach. To combat the hassle of starting a fire in the wind, I like to use readyto-light charcoal. This saves time and aggravation. I place a full bag of it on the bottom and build up the fire wood around it. Always bring a shovel to dig a pit, as this helps contain the fire and it also protects it from the wind. A pit also allows you to quickly bury the evidence of your fire when you’re done. This keeps our beaches looking pristine, and in Texas we are allowed to drive on many beaches. Covering up your hole is important so that no one accidentally drives into it. Lastly, we all know the down side of beachgoing is bringing the sand home. One thing I started doing a few years ago with my boys is to fill a large 120-quart cooler with warm water. When it’s time to get cleaned up, they jump in, have a warm comfortable bath and clean up. They absolutely love it! Warm water is around the corner, get out and enjoy with your family! Capt. Michael Okruhlik is the inventor of Controlled Descent Lures and the owner of www.MyCoastOutdoors.com.

aiting at home for a phone call, running to the mailbox for news from a friend, scanning the Yellow Pages for a plumber—these artifacts from the pre-Internet days are laughable activities in today’s era of technology. When was the last time you replaced the tape in your answering machine or the ribbon in your typewriter? So in this modern age, why would anyone look to a tour book with old information for advice on planning a fishing trip? For unknown reasons, all the tour books for Costa Rica list the high season for fishing as November to April. At FishingNosara we get calls from clients all the time regarding the best time of year to come fishing in Costa Rica. The truth is the fishing here is fairly consistent year-round. After all, fish eat every day. But, armed with an out-of-date tour book, these callers insist that summer is no good. To counter these misconceptions, FishingNosara maintains photographic evidence to the contrary at blog.FishingNosara.com as well as on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. Let’s take a glance back at the last few years of fishing in the month of May and prove the tour books wrong. In May 2017, angler Roger Chambers fished for a week in Nosara and closed out the campaign with a four-species day. They had an early roosterfish release, then Capt. William of the Wanderer got a call on the radio from Capt. Carlos on the Discoverer reporting a kettle of yellowfin tuna offshore. The mid-afternoon bite led to dorados and yellowfin tuna on ice for Team Chambers. The final score of the day was a Sailfish release. In May 2016, the Harvester welcomed Ken Richmond and his group of hard-fishing Texans and caught a true fish of a lifetime with a massive 400-plus-pound blue marlin. Also, the 26-foot Explorer scored an 80-plus-pound floor-sweeping wahoo, several nice sailfish and a half-dozen roosterfish releases. Likewise, big cubera snapper were abundant on the 23-foot Adventurer, and the 32-foot Wanderer scored some trips with double-digit sailfish releases. May is also a great time for honeymoons. Newlyweds Daniel and Vicky Martinko scored a mammoth wahoo, a beautiful roosterfish and lots of sailfish during their 2015 trip. In May 2015, the Discoverer brought the house down with a billfish grand slam on May 10. Client Tony King and his group scored a striped marlin estimated around 200 pounds and a larger blue marlin estimated at more than 350 pounds. They added a sailfish to the scorecard to round-out a legendary day of fishing. We have video of the grand slam catches on the FishingNosara blog, which proves—regardless of what the tour book says—that Costa Rica’s fishing is consistently good… no matter the season. Visit blog.FishingNosara.com for current photos, video and reports on the action.

Inshore & Offshore Opportunities
by Capt. Terry Fisher
ay is the month for opportunities M galore when it comes to targeting fish, both inshore and offshore.
Pine Island Sound. I find that they are less spooky and easier to catch on high incoming tides around spoil islands. Live shrimp and gold spoons are usually very effective. Trout are plentiful everywhere, especially on the grass flats. I use very light tackle (2500-3000 series spinning reels on light rods with 10lb test line). My live bait of choice is a live shrimp under a popping cork to catch them. The lighter the tackle, the more fun it is to catch to smaller trout.
Moderate and consistent warm water temperatures will create the perfect situation for inshore, reef and pelagic species to our area waters. An abundance of baitfish for netting, big shrimp, pinfish, crabs and mullet (dead or alive) for purchase from any area bait and tackle shop, catering to ‘anglers in the know’.
Spanish mackerel may be targeted with artificial spoons and Gotcha type lures (on thin wire leaders). Live bait preferences are free-lined pilchards on 30lb test monofilament leaders with small hooks. Look for diving birds to located feeding schools of mackerel.
Offshore:
Inshore: Big Tarpon are cruising the beaches. They are in the passes, areas of Pine Island Sound and Charlotte Harbor. These fish are migrating in schools from the south and are looking to feed on virtually any bait in their path. Live/dead ‘baits of choice’ are many, including ‘Dollar’ crabs (blue crab), pass crabs, mullet, herring, sardines, ladyfish, pinfish and catfish fillets. These baits may be fished on the bottom of the seabed or under a balloon or float. Use gear strong enough to handle anything from 60 to a 150lb fish. Spinning reels in the 6000-8000 series loaded on 30-40lb rated rods with sixty-five pound test line, 80lb. leader, with 6/0 to 8/0 circle hooks should be sufficient for most hook ups. Try not to exhaust the fish with too light of tackle. Sharks are following the tarpon and will make a great bycatch using the same baits and the same gear. Snook season is closed on the Gulf Coast, but there are no laws that prevent anglers from catching them. May is a fantastic month to look for big snook cruising along the beaches and passes. Many snook have moved to these locations, from rivers, canals and reefs to feed and spawn. These fish are here in great numbers and are awesome fighters. Live, dead and artificial presentations all work. I prefer to free-line live sardines, herring or pinfish, using light tackle with circle hooks. Try not to use tackle (too light) that will prolong the fight to the extent of exhausting the fish. I recommend 4000 spinning reels with 10-20lb. rated rods, loaded with 10-15 pound test line, as some of these fish are large breeders. Redfish are here in decent numbers in the ‘back-country’ locations off of Matlacha Pass and Pine Island Sound. Target them on high, incoming tides with light tackle or locate them ‘tailing’ on the shallow flats in
I am addressing mostly ‘close’ offshore (45 ft. or less). Most of the big grouper or snapper will be caught in 70-80 plus feet of water. To be safe, one needs a vessel with two motors for the long offshore runs. However, there are a few anglers that venture out and do a nice job, and return safely. All reef species require the use of a circle hook. Be sure to know the regulations for both state and federal waters, as there is a difference. Mangrove (Gray) snapper are in the passes and on the reefs. Basic drops are light line with a 2ft. leader, 1/0 to 2/0 circle hook loaded with squid, shrimp, sardine or herring (dead or alive). Lane/Vermillion will be caught on same rigging. These fish are smaller, beautiful in color and make for great eating. Permit are making their way to the reefs. Crabs are my favorite baits for this venue. I free-line crab to them with awesome results. When using shrimp, I chum up the water with a few and free-line one on a hook. These fish are aggressive and lots of fun to catch. Use medium size tackle to enjoy the fight. Kingfish are off the beaches (15ft. or more of water). Trolling silver spoons is my favorite method for catching them. Wire leaders with trailers will prevent cut offs. Cobia are here. Keep a rod rigged with an artificial eel for a quick cast. The best chance will be to have a rod ready and a live eel in the bait well to present, when the opportunity arises. This is Captain Terry Fisher of Fish Face Charters at www.fishfacecharters. com. by Shug Clawson was asked the other day by a new customer, “Why buy a Iminute custom fishing rod over XYZ’s top of the line rod?’ I sat for a and thought, what does make a custom rod better? Is it
the rod blank used? Is it the guides? The reel seat? Or maybe it’s the thread wraps? What is it that makes the rods better? Let me explain the multiple aspects of how a factory built fishing rod is built. First the parts are all pulled together and then the reel handle and reel seat are added to the rod. Next, the guides are laid out according to a sheet of distances from the tip with each and every guide placed where it should be according to a standard format. The guides are then wrapped onto the rod blank with varying levels of skill and uniformity. Lastly stickers are added and a layer of thread finish is applied and allowed to dry onto the rod. These steps vary very little, in that it is the basic essence of building a fishing rod. Now a factory rod is good, some are even very good, but they still have a couple flaws that keep them from being great. First of all, they are not always built on a high-quality rod blank. Over the years, companies have come and gone. Some have gotten better, some worse and some tragically destroyed a once great name in the need to make the all mighty dollar. I use United Composites, Calstar, St. Croix and others on occasion, but the running theme is these companies have extremely high quality controls in place to ensure a great product. These high-end American made rod blanks, coupled with proper assembly on the spine of the rod, using Dynamic loading to place the guides in the optimal spots will produce a rod that is lightweight, beautiful to look at and capable of handling whatever fishing situation you had it built for. This is one of the secrets to having a custom rod built. DO YOU, AS THE ANGLER, KNOW WHAT YOU WANT THE ROD TO SPECIFICALLY DO? What length do you prefer? Are you casting, trolling, or dropping baits to bottom fish? What is your preferred line weight to be fishing? Do you prefer an EVA Handle or Cork handle? Do you like old school ideas or are you wanting to try the cutting-edge technology? And the two biggest questions you should ask yourself before you contact a rod builder about a custom rod: 1) What is your budget for having a rod built? 2) Are you willing to wait for the rod to be built? (This could be a couple weeks to a couple months depending on time of year, demand on the builders’ time and availability of the parts to be used.) Once you have decided it’s time to consider a custom rod; swing by and have a chat with a custom rod builder and see if they are the one to build your dream rod.

A Guide to Live Bait
I
Voted BEST Bait & Tackle shop on the Island
D&D MATLACHA BAIT & TACKLE
by Capt. James Marko
’m going to share the most important thing Photo Credit FWC to charter captains and anglers alike. Everything you need to know about Live Bait. I’m Whitefish talking about whitebait, pilchards, greenbacks, etc. The first step is to get out there and set up before the sunrise. Thirty minutes before and after sunrise is the magic hour. Get out later than that and it becomes much more difficult because they can see you. There are several ways of finding out where the bait is located. Ask friends, join a local fishing group, or go out and scout the flats a day before. Most of the time there’s a specific area, structure, or flat on the inside of a pass that holds bait from spring to fall. During the summer, it’s plentiful off the beaches. During the winter months, it can be very hard to find. Diving birds or what looks like raindrops on the otherwise smooth water, is what you’re looking for. Determine which direction the tide is moving and anchor up on the edge of the flat, channel marker, or beach in 4 to 6 feet of water. Start chumming to create a slick that gets carried by the current and acts like a breadcrumb trail for the bait to follow back to you. Never try to rodeo the bait and chase it down. I get asked a lot what I use for chum and frankly you can use just about anything. Mixing menhaden oil with fish, dog, or cat food is an old way of doing it. The problem is it all sinks and it takes a really long time to get a slick going. Chumming 20-30 minutes to build a good slick is typical. My secret weapon and what most charter guys use is Boca Coast Bait Fish Chum. This stuff sinks and then starts to float back up to the surface. This creates a slick really fast. More like 5-10 minutes. I just toss in a handful when I first get there. By the time I turn on the livewell, get my net ready, and take a few sips of coffee, they’re usually knocking on the door. Another benefit of it returning to the surface is it separates the pinfish from the whitebait. This also saves a ton of time when you’re ready to throw the net. If you don’t see them in the first 5 minutes, sprinkle in about a golf ball size amount every thirty seconds right next to the center console. This will keep the pinfish on the bottom, where they like to feed, and the whitebait right off the stern where you’ll be throwing your net. You’ll catch a lot more whitebait vs pins that way. At the end of the day, return your left-over bait to the flat. Don’t bring it back to the dock and feed it to the dock pets. You may catch it again tomorrow!

Great Fishing by Capt. Sam O’Briant nce again, we have made it through the transition months O and are ready to start setting up things for the hot summer months ahead. This month all the fish around are pretty much
our local resident fish that will be with us all summer. Of course, you will get the stray schools offshore of stragglers. So, what can we expect this month? This is the time of year that our water temperature should be in what I consider the ideal range, 75-85 degrees. This means our trout will be back to their normal selves. The snook will no longer be just sitting there and the redfish is anybody’s guess. Baitfish will have moved inland, the tarpon should be here in droves. This is the month that the snook will be migrating out of the back country headed for the out islands and coastal shorelines. They will be hungry from over wintering and ready to fatten up for spawning. This month you should be able to find them in just about any habitat you wish to look. Minnows will be your best choice but shrimp will also attract them. Float a cork under the overhanging mangroves. Trout will be roaming all their usual haunts. They will be over the grass flats looking for that shrimp. The larger ones will be solitary and also may be under the mangroves. Here again a shrimp or minnow under a popping cork works great. You can use the cork to its greatest potential by popping it every so often or just use it to keep you out of the grass. Both ways work well. If you have young kids, trout will be your best bet, especially if you can find a school. It will keep them interested until your bait runs out. On the other hand, if you just have to catch a big fish, this and next month are probably your best chances for tarpon. They should be running just offshore in 20 – 30 feet of water daisy-chaining or all over Pine Island Sound. When you see a group of boats offshore, please do not run through them, they are probably working a school of tarpon. Run up ahead of the school and set up. They usually tend to head north along the coast and will come to you. For tarpon, the bait of choice is either larger live bait or half a catfish, ladyfish, crab, or mullet. Either put them under a cork or soak them on the bottom. If you are using dead baits, check them ever so often and put on fresh. The crabs and bait stealers tend to eat at the bait. Spanish mackerel will still be cruising the passes and Pine Island Sound. They will take cut bait, shrimp, or lures. If Spanish are your main choice be sure to use a steel leader. If you do not, you will have more cut offs than you have catches.Take the kids out, enjoy the family and have fun this month. Capt. by water, dipping your paddle in the water, dragging lures, bait and hopefully fish into your kayak. Water shoes are a must here in SW Florida as we are surrounded by potential hazards, most notably the oysters that inhabit all saltwater estuaries. I wear quick dry pants and fast drain shoes, as I love to get out of my kayak often to wade fish. Some things can tolerate getting wet while others (smart phone) could be costly if submersed. Saltwater is especially corrosive to virtually everything you bring so special care is needed when you’re done. Everything, including your kayak, all nylon seats, ropes, and all your gear should receive a fresh water flush, including those old sneakers or shoes. One simple mistake I see a lot of people make is putting a wet salty lure back in their tackle box that will later corrode everything it can. Always have a place to put used tackle, rinse it off at home and reload it once it’s dry! Those wells that have hatch covers are never dry, so don’t expect anything to remain dry in them, use big Ziplock bags or better yet get a water bag for them. These are the kind that you fold at the top and have a clasp to lock out the water, they come in many sizes and in the event you manage to dunk yourself and your kayak, your valuables will be dry and float.

The biggest issue you’ll run into is water, especially saltwater, getting into your fishing reels. As kayak anglers, our gear is particularly exposed to the elements. There is not a lot of room in a kayak and your fishing rods are probably going to be right in your lap, between your legs, while you’re paddling around and water is going to drip off your paddle directly onto your reels. Also, admit it or not, we’ve all dipped our reel into the water while untangling the line or some other awkward maneuver. While performance is the primary reason for buying a reel, as a kayak angler you need to take into account how resistant to water intrusion that reel is. There are countless reels to choose from but the best water resistance I’ve found is in the Penn Spinfisher V. While this reel is designed to resist a dunking, some care is needed when you’re finished using it. I use a very light misting of fresh water (not a full-on hosing), spray Reel Magic or another line and reel conditioner after every use, towel dry afterwards! It’s a wild world-get out there! Bowman’s Beach
by Mike Hammond
As summer approaches, traffic starts to return to “normal” and a quick trip to Sanibel is doable most days. A great location appreciated by paddlers and beachgoers alike is Sanibel’s Bowman’s Beach. Most people head straight to the sand and don’t even notice the paddlecraft launch hidden in the mangroves, but paddlers know and appreciate it being there. Parking is now $6 per hour or you can park for free with the Lee County Parks & Recreation parking pass sticker. The lot is patrolled regularly, so do not forget to pay. We always head northwest from the launch and paddle under the pedestrian bridge. There are many old snags still standing, providing perches and nesting sites for the large osprey population that resides in the area. After our last trip there, we named the stretch “Osprey Alley.” There are also many wading and shorebirds to observe. If you continue northwest for a mile and a half, you will dead-end at a small beach where a path will take you about 100 feet to the Gulf. Stay on the path to avoid disturbing the beach-stabilizing plants and nasty sandspurs. On one trip with the SWFL Paddle Club, we were surprised to find nice knee-high rolling waves. Half the group surfed and the other half stayed warm on land. There are often smalls waves at Bowman’s to play in, but they usually close out pretty quickly. Having rolling, glassy waves is a real treat. The groups I have paddled with have never gone beyond this point, but you can backtrack to Old Blind Pass and add several miles to your paddle. After you return to the launch to take-out, it is just a short walk to the outdoor shower, bathrooms and changing rooms. This is nice when you have wet, sandy kids who want to go to Doc Ford’s for lunch. Whether you are looking for a relaxed backwater paddle or some Gulf action (maybe both), Bowman’s Beach has something for everyone.

Waterkeeper Rangers
by John Cassani
As most anglers know, fish habitat is varied and critical for successful feeding, reproduction and recruitment. Seagrass is a vital form of structural habitat for many species of estuarine dependent fish such as speckled seatrout, snook and redfish. Uniform distribution of seagrass is not what nature intended as depth and sediment variability may be controlling factors. The good news to anglers is that many recreationally important fish have adapted to the “edge effect” as ambush predators. Experienced anglers have learned that dropping a jerk bait or jig along the edge or in a hole opening in a seagrass meadow often yields a predictable response from a waiting trout or redfish. Unfortunately, there are many factors that suppress seagrass including limiting light availability due to excessive color or turbidity often resulting from water management policy decisions. Careless boaters can also cause damage to seagrass from prop-scarring and altering sediment composition. The message for this issue is a reminder of how valuable seagrass is to marine ecosystems and remain cautious to avoid damage to this vital resource. Supporting organizations that promote seagrass conservation is another way to ensure a vital sport fishery into the future. Over the years, as people flocked to the shores of southwest Florida, many of the bays were developed, their waters drained and mangroves ripped out. Though some may have been lucky enough to escape this fate, all of them have been altered with its boundaries now boxed in by condos and hotels. Like lungs to a throat, the bays breathe in and out each day, slowly filling and emptying to the rhythm of the tides, life here hinging on a faraway moon. The Conservancy of Southwest Florida has been monitoring this system since 1999, making it one of the longest running mangrove studies in the state. Over the decades, with multiple monitoring plots scattered throughout, we’ve worked to gain an understanding of how the forest is faring. Our work is much like your annual physical at the doctors; only our patients are trees. Having worked to assess the health of these plots for nearly two decades, the trees are now old acquaintances and each year we return to check in on them. We measure how tall they are, how wide they are and check to see if there are any abnormal growths or discolorations occurring. Every tree and propagule (seedling mangroves) over 32 cm tall is tagged and measured within 6 meters of a center pole.

of the time these sharks get confused with the hammerhead. Why is that? They have a round nose and their eyes are out on the edge. Bonnethead sharks do not grow to be large, most that you will catch average around three feet. The best part about the bonnethead is they are great eating. Yes, sharks are good to eat if cared for properly. To harvest one you should have a cooler large enough for the whole gutted shark, plenty of ice to chill it down, till you return to port and prepare to clean it. To gut a shark, I tie the dock line around its tail, hang it outside the boat, tying it to a cleat and split it open from the anal opening to the lower jaw. Remove the entrails and let the shark hang for fifteen minutes or so, till you put it on ice. Try to cut the skin from the inside out, as to save the sharpness of your blade. Some anglers like to steak them or filet and skin them, either way is good meat. Blacktips also make good table fare. They can reach lengths close to six feet, and there is lots of meat on one of these. I usually harvest one around four feet, as there is plenty of meat to share with friends and family. These would be excellent fare for a Friday night fish fry too. With a couple of sides, like southern tomato gravy and rice and maybe some cornbread muffins, oh and sweet tea for shore! There some other toothy critters that come to visit also; hammerheads, bulls, spinners, even some tigers, too. Most of the bigger sharks follow the silver king tarpon as they are their main food source. This is also the beginning of the tarpon migration that has billed Boca Grande Pass as the best tarpon fishing in the world. Yes, there are smaller passes north and south of Boca that will have fish too, but Boca is the King for silver kings. This is just in our own back yard and gets lots of attention from the angling community. All the on-water marinas have live baits that can reach three dollars and fifty cents each. Yea it is cheaper to catch your own, if you got the bucks and less time that works too. Though tarpon are not a desirable fish to eat, like the shark, they are very acrobatic fighters and are great to get on video. To harvest one, you must purchase a tag in advance and that costs fifty bucks.

Outdoor Opportunities by Wayne Nichols
his is the time of year where all sportsman can find plenty of T opportunities to get outdoors. Here at Red Eye we had close to 30 Osceola’s taken this Spring and did multiple combination
hunts...turkey, gator, and hogs. As always hogs are open yearround down here. Getting into the woods, chasing wild hogs is always a great time and a good way to put some meat in the freezer. Then there’s also our favorite, alligator hunting! On private land, our season runs year-round and we’ve got plenty of tags again this year. This is an exciting hunt for all ages! During daylight hours, we’re virtually unlimited on how we can hunt them. Any type of firearms, muzzleloader, pistols, crossbow, bow, harpoon/spear, bait lines...etc. Hunts are conducted day and night depending on your preferred method. Night hunts are a great way to beat the Florida heat, but mosquitos can get terrible so make sure to grab a ThermaCell or some repellent. Work with the area’s best Captain’s is a great way to experience more of what South Florida has to offer by booking one of our “Cast n Blast” deals. Combo hunting/fishing for 3-4 days for Gators and hogs, then spend a day inshore or offshore fishing. This is one of the best times of the year to chase big gators. Big bulls are traveling looking for mates and are a lot more aggressive this time of year. This is something to remember when out with pets and children around any freshwater. The past few years has seen many more reports of attacks on people and pets, so be very cautious with your surroundings. Recently had a hunt with some Canadian folks looking to escape some cold temperatures and wanted to warm up in our famous sunshine. We ventured into a cypress swamp, on foot, stalking Gators sunning through the broken timber. Once we located a large gator sunning in some cypress stumps, we set
up and waited....and waited...after a few hours the gator finally moved some, presenting my hunter with a clear headshot, which is vital in these conditions so you don’t lose it. A well-placed shot and it was all over, a great finish to a very patient hunter. The other hunter with him wanted a more open water type hunt, so we headed to the glades on one of our big sugar cane places. We located a big gator swimming in a large canal and he went under. After several attempts with the hand line treble hook, he snagged him and the fight was on! He got him in close enough to get a shot on him, pretty wild with water n lily pads flying through the air and death-rolling, while he was trying to get a shot off! If you have any questions about hunting down here, need information on booking a hunt or would like to know more about what we offer, give me a call anytime at 863-990-7650. I’m heading back in the woods now y’all stay safe and remember to take a kid hunting or fishing anytime you get a chance! FACEBOOK.COM/COASTALANGLERMAGAZINEFTMYERS/ | MAY 2018 | FORT MYERS 15
Time to Bend that Rod
by Capt. Dave Stephens
fter an up and down spring, I think we can finally say that A warm weather is here to stay. The snook fishing has finally got to where it should be. My clients have been experiencing
the fishing that Charlotte Harbor is known for. We have been averaging close to 30 snook on our half day charters, with some fish pushing 36-40”. Live bait has been the best option for these hungry guys. Look for moving water around the deeper mangrove points on the higher tides. As the water falls, look for pot holes on the flats. A higher abundance of glass minnows this year has got the fish moving around more. Keep your eye out for fish feeding on glass minnows around the islands also. With these warm southwest winds, we should start seeing some schools of tarpon showing up. Our water temps are staying above the mid 70’s and pushing into the 80’s. Normally the south end of the harbor and the beaches start seeing the first action. If you want to deal with the Boca Grande mad house, you will surely see some schools rolling. Crabs and thread herring are your best bet for a hook-up this time of year. Patience is the key, and being courteous to your fellow anglers will help. If you’re looking to just get out and get the rod to bend, there are plenty of our migratory fish in the harbor. The warmer water has brought in plenty of Spanish mackerel and bluefish. The biggest giveaway on these guys are birds. Look for seagulls trying to get the leftovers during a feeding frenzy. Most anything that flashes will get a bite. I recommend using a heavier leader or a small piece of single strand steel leader. These guys are very toothy and will take plenty of tackle. Trout fishing on the flats has been pretty good. This time of year the bigger fish are getting ready for the spring spawn. So catching a very big trout can happen pretty much daily. Just remember that big fat trout is full of our future trout fishery, so you might want to let them big girls spawn. The mangrove snapper should start making their way into the harbor also. Look for these guys around the deeper flats. Without a doubt they have the best eyesight of any fish. I recommend downsizing your leader and hook when targeting these guys. I recommend 20# fluorocarbon and a #1 hook. A wide variety of baits will get these guys biting. I prefer either shrimp or small pieces of cut sardines. Things are finally warm for good, so get out and enjoy some of Southwest Florida’s outdoors. If you would like to experience some of Southwest Florida’s finest fishing, give us a call, 941-916-5769 or send an email to capt.dstephens@comcast.net. All of our charters are private and customized to fit you and your party’s needs. Capt. Dave Stephens, www.backbayxtremes.com

very year we all struggle with showing our Moms how important they are and how much we love them, right? Flowers, candy and brunches are all great but let’s think outside the box this year and really hit a home run. To permanently secure your status as the favorite child take mom to the Plantation on Crystal River for best Mother’s Day weekend to unwind. Travel back in time when family trips were fun, everyone was together, there was a lot to do and it really did not break the bank, that’s the Plantation on Crystal River. On Nature’s Coast you can swim with manatees, take a river cruise, fish, spa, or golfing and when season opens go scalloping. If you can’t go right now, buy a gift certificate, just make sure she uses it and no worries if they are having a great Mother’s Day Brunch. Plantation on Crystal River
my personal favorite Knife of the Month Club. Just remember to visit Mom on the day that these treats arrive in the mail; however she may start to get suspicious. There is one thing that I need to mention that you cannot buy, it goes by fast, it’s priceless and it is also free, Time. The thing that all Moms want from their kids is their time, which is something that we tend to overlook in our busy lives. Spending precious time with our Mom’s and loved ones is something that cannot be replaced with a trip, gift or fancy brunch. I like to spend time with my kids in the outdoors because that is who we are. Find out who your Mom is and what she likes to do and do it. Make Mother’s Day Great Again…..

Mental Health by Fishin’ Frank
hy is fishing different? It makes for good W mental health. Humans, that be us, have some weird things about us. Take for instance
memories; if you think about it, the bad memories are right there for you to remember. Yes, every bad or embarrassing thing pops to mind readily. Now that makes sense if you think 500,000 years ago, when people were just getting started, if something bad happened and you survived, making that same mistake could kill you and end the human race. So, bad plants, animals, or not jumping off a cliff were very important things to remember, which seems to make good things less important back then and that much harder to remember. Except fishing, for some wonderful reason we tend to remember the good days when we caught tons of fish, or that big ole monster fish, or the days when the wind and tide and fish all were excellent. It is very difficult to remember the day when we caught no fish or sunk the boat. We remember the wonderful or amazing smell of the water in the morning, making us long for another day to do it again, and it does not seem to matter if the amazing trips are a bit farther apart than we say, we still have them. And how cool is that! Fishing is good
mental health and just makes you feel better, about the world. Take for instance this year when fishing has been a bit harder. There was still that trip or two where the big ones were biting and another day where there were dozens of fish caught. So how will May be? Excellent, at least as far as I remember. So, to be fair, and not rely on my wonderful fishing memories alone, I looked up May on fishinfranks.com fishing history reports. Tarpon, sharks, cobia, big snook, all here and biting. The rains don’t really come with full force until June and the water is still cool enough to hold a lot of oxygen. May is the Month of Big Fish, huge hammerheads at Boca Pass, thousands of tarpon in the pass and on the Hill or in the deep holes. For the shark catching folks, start in the deep holes chumming and use smaller rods like you would for redfish, small leader with a 4/0 to 6/0 hook (I like the bleeding ones from A.F.W.), and you will catch a bunch of smaller sharks. Remember to bend the barb over on the hook so it comes out nice and easy. Once the small ones stop biting that means a monster shark has moved in-Big Sharks eat Little Sharks. So when the small ones stop, switch to big rods and hang on. Hopefully May will bring you lots of great fish memories to be forefront in your mind. And not the coffee you just spilled on your lap going into the meeting.

The Pursuit by Rick Bennett
T
he pursuit of fish often brings us in contact with some of the most memorable experiences and is one reason it is such a great thing to share with your entire family. When I was a child, my parents used to take my sister Denise and I fishing quite often, and on several occasions the fish that we caught were not the highlight of the trip. The four of us once spent all night on a sand bar in an open 18ft boat in the Keys after we misunderstood the location of the channel while we were traveling at a high rate of speed at dusk. While we were wading around the boat, watching the tide go out, a stingray swam nearby. Denise and I expressed our fear and my Dad told us to calm down. “That thing is more afraid of you than you are of it! he said as he stomped aggressively towards the ray. The stingray immediately charged straight for my father who jumped just in time to avoid being hit and tumbled backwards into the boat. We all had a good laugh, and even to this day, we all smile and laugh when we remember the event. That night was not the most comfortable of my life, but it was enjoyable. The stars were intensely
beautiful and we passed the time by telling stories and talking. My family took that same boat from Miami to Bimini one summer. It was not a very calm day, and in my mind, it was high adventure. As a young kid, I was proud of how I helped when we were all on the boat together. I was glad to be responsible for pulling in the anchor, being careful to clean it off without hitting the side of the boat before I brought it on board. Dad began letting me operate the boat very early on and by the time I was in the fifth grade, I could do it myself with confidence. Besides the natural beauty of creation and the excitement of catching fish, there are many opportunities for problem solving when fishing. I remember helping my dad make temporary repairs to the boat while we were on the water so that we could get home and can recall making good and bad decisions regarding thunderstorms that developed while we were out. Mine is a boating family, using the boat to fish, dive, water ski, go to the beach, or to a waterfront restaurant for dinner. The hours we spent on the boat together during my childhood will always be a treasure to me, and I hope that I am making the same kind of memories with my children. Baseball and soccer have many benefits, but the team sport that I have always enjoyed the most is fishing and boating with my family, the team that I learn to work with, is the team that matters the most to me. ithout a doubt, this is one of the best times of year to be W on the water. As always, it’ll go way too fast. Bait, scaled sardines and threadfin herring move in and are scattered
throughout the harbor and surrounding bays and sounds. The water temperature is warming up, isn’t too hot yet, and everything is on the feed. Furthermore, no matter what kind of vessel you fish, access is good. There’s opportunity from the upper harbor to the beaches and all the flats in between. For me, it’s an opportunity to get in some snook and tarpon fishing. Right now, snook are cruising up and down shorelines on both sides of the harbor. The east side is good from Alligator Creek all the way down to the Matlacha Bridge. The west wall has good numbers from Cattle Dock to Cape Haze Point. Going west, shoreline points, cuts, and creek edges between Cape Haze and Cayo Pelau at the base of Gasparilla Sound can be good. This being said, it’s still hard to not spend the entire month hunting tarpon. Early in the month, resident fish coming out of the rivers group up in the deeper holes of the upper harbor.
In fact, at first light, they can be seen rolling anywhere from the U.S. 41 Bridge to the holes off Pirate Harbor. Furthermore, by mid-month we should be seeing the migratory schools making their way up from the Keys, providing the run that makes Boca Grande the tarpon fishing capital of the world. At this point, I like spending my time off the beach. I’ll look between Boca Grande and Captiva Pass. My favorite spot is off Murdock Point just south of Boca Grande Pass. Here, on a good day, I like to stake off with an anchor set up with an attached buoy for quick deployment. This allows me to free myself from the anchor if a fish starts pulling so much line that we have to give chase. If I’m not throwing a fly, I like to fish small live crabs on a spinning rod. Some days, if the fish are harder to find, I’ll set up a controlled drift with the trolling motor to cover more ground. Redfish will also take advantage of the bait influx and will be scattered throughout the flats. In particular, I like flats adjacent to the intracoastal in both Lemon Bay and Pine Island Sound. In Lemon Bay, keep an eye around Stump Pass; in Pine Island Sound, the northern end around Useppa can really fish well. Until next month, good tides. Captain Michael Manis is a U.S.G.C. Licensed captain and has been teaching the sport of fly and light tackle angling since 2002. He lives in Punta Gorda, Florida and can be reached at www.puntagordaflycharters.com.

Good Times At The Sea Spray Abaco Challenge
F
rom Feb. 7-10, 18 teams gathered on Elbow Cay, Abaco, Bahamas at the Sea Spray Resort and Marina for the Second Annual Sea Spray Abaco Challenge. Hosted by the resort, this tournament is becoming known as one of the most enjoyable in the Bahamas. With prize packages through fifth place, affordable entry and value-added categories, nine radio raffles worth $400 each, team bags and buckets stuffed with goodies and fantastic food and live entertainment, this event is all about having fun. This year’s event raised and donated more than $6,000 to the Hope Town Primary School, Every Child Counts Bahamas and Bahamas Air Sea Rescue Association. Wahoo, blackfin and yellowfin tuna and mahi-mahi are the target species, with teams eligible to weigh their two biggest fish from each species on each day of the three-day competition. This year Team Crab Eyes took home the overall championship with a cumulative weight of 292.6 pounds. These guys finished second in the inaugural event and were eager to take home the win. In second place was Team Sonny Boy with a total of 134.3 pounds. Sonny Boy also weighed the biggest fish in the Wahoo Category, and at 52.9 pounds took biggest fish overall for the tournament. In third place was Team Perfect Timing with a total of 83.2 pounds. These guys came from out of nowhere on the last day to make it onto the podium. Special congratulations to Team Family Circus, which won the local Bahamian championship with a total of 65.9 pounds. Their name will be inscribed on the residual trophy at the resort and they took home a beautiful black grouper mount by tournament sponsor King Sailfish Release Mounts. Tricks of the Trade
L
ike land hunters or rod-and-reel fishermen, spearos also study and perfect some tricks of the trade. Spearos immerse themselves into the fishes’ environment, so the first skill to master is to look like you belong there. Beginners tend to exhibit aggressive behavior, chasing and spooking fish. If fish scatter when you get near, study how calmly an experienced diver moves in the water. Until you achieve a non-threatening aura, all other tips and tricks will be useless. After achieving smooth diving technique, here are some techniques to get near fish. 1) Aspetto (Italian for “wait”)—It starts from the surface with a smooth duck-dive into the water while removing the snorkel. You descend with soft kicks until you begin to free-fall as you scan the bottom. By turning your fin blades, you maneuver to the right spot, perhaps where the reef meets sand. You lie motionless on the bottom until curious fish come to check you out. Moving only your eyes, you pick out the prey, move your gun slowly, and make a well-placed shot. A good spearo will make this technique look easy, but it is not. This is especially effective with evasive fish that become curious when you do not move, such as mutton snappers in Florida, stripers in the northeast, and bigeye emperors in Hawaii. 2) Agguato (Italian for “ambush”)–This is a dynamic stalking technique to get closer to prey without being noticed. The diver navigates the bottom using the environment to get closer to the prey. The diver must consider current, visibility and available bottom structure while moving from one object to another, blending into shadows or hiding behind reef formations. If your body can be hidden while closing the gap, the fish will remain unaware of your presence.
CANGL_FIL1-FIL4.indd 4
3) Flashers/ Sheri Daye practices “aspetto” technique. chum—Especially Photo by Joe Marino effective for hunting pelagics such as jacks, tunas, dolphin and wahoo. Multiple mirrors dangle below a float, and the flashes of light in the water imitate the reflective glare from a school of baitfish. The fish come in to investigate. Chum can be used in combination with a flasher to bring them even closer and keep them interested. In addition to these techniques, serious spearos are likely to train in a pool, use meditation techniques, and do cardio exercises to increase their breath hold capacity. Many take freediving classes to increase bottom time and safety. While there is no certification required to do it, classes should be a pre-requisite, as freediving is a sport that can lead to “blackout” and death if not practiced correctly. Spearfishing is a beautiful, selective way to catch fish, but it is also physically and mentally demanding. Above all, be safe and happy hunting! Sheri is a world-record holder, host of Speargun Hunter, and producer of The Blue Wild Ocean Adventure Expo in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. Follow “Sheri Daye” and “The Blue Wild” on Facebook and Instagram.

I
am an alligator hunting guide, and a big part of what I do is manage alligator numbers on private lands, such as ranches, farms, golf courses, private subdivisions, mobile home parks, etc. What most people see is the hunting and killing part of what we do as guides, but there’s a whole other side most people don’t get to see or even know about... live capturing of alligators! While live capturing these big toothy critters can be extremely dangerous, it is very necessary. I have to trust my crew with my life, literally. Most alligators, big and small, want to avoid people in general. But when one loses its fear of man from being fed, takes up residence on a farm, ranch, or any other property, they need to be removed. They don’t always have to be killed. Most people don’t want to see the big golf course or neighborhood alligator killed, and I don’t blame them at all. I actually agree with them completely. Alligators are a huge part of Florida and our ecosystem. They need to be managed and preserved. When I get these types of calls, I start getting excited. You never know what you’re fixing to get into! Recently I had a rancher with a big problem, and I do mean BIG! He had a giant gator he had seen for years that was never a problem. But the 12-foot-plus gator had moved into an area where it was a threat to livestock and people. The rancher needed the gator removed, but he didn’t want to see that big alligator killed. I told him that wasn’t a problem at all. I called my crew, and off we went. It didn’t take long at all to locate that big alligator. But it definitely wasn’t willing to cooperate. After an hour-long fight, some broken lines, several bent-out hooks and a few real intense moments, we got a noose on his jaws and a few ropes around him. That was the “easy” part. I’m not real fond of jumping into the mud and water onto the back of something that can kill a man in a split second, but someone has to do it. Call it a job perk! Once on board, I pushed the gator’s head down, secured its jaws with my hands, and we got its mouth taped up and legs tied. We loaded it in the truck and took it to a preserve with no hunting. We released it to live out its days breeding and keeping the population going. Happy gator! We do a lot of live capture and relocation at Red Eye Safaris. It’s pretty rewarding to know you’re part of something more than just the hunting side of the industry. If you have alligators on your property and would like them captured alive, numbers managed and/or relocated, call Wayne at 863990-7650 or email waynenichols75@gmail.com. In some cases they will actually pay the landowner. COASTALANGLERMAG.COM • THEANGLERMAG.COM

t’s all too easy to read fishing articles and have it be entertainment and inspiration instead of education. What can you do to begin to accelerate your learning curve? First, start taking notes. That’s right, this is your leisure time and you’re not in school any more but its time you take your game up a notch. Get a notebook; this could be the back half of the fishing log book you started, and start using it when you read articles in magazine, books or online subscriptions. Review your notes after you finish reading an article and make sure you understand those notes. If not, get in touch with the author if possible and ask. Next, using Google Earth (the program—not Google Maps satellite version) make a game plan based on what you learned from the article. Take screen shots and print them to remind you what your plan is and take these with you in the boat with your notes. Execute the plan, and stay on task. I find that it’s all too easy for a student to begin the plan that was laid out, only to quickly let it evaporate and punt, reverting to old habits once on the water. Hope these notes help you become a better student of your teachers. Always feel free to contact us at TroutSupport.com for support in improving your coastal inshore fishing game. Tobin created TroutSupport.com - tech support for trout and redfish anglers.

OAA Fisheries recently changed the recreational seasons for greater amberjack in the Gulf of Mexico. Recreational fishing for greater amberjack will be open May 1-31, 2018. The greater amberjack recreational fishing year will be Aug. 1 through July 31. The greater amberjack recreational fixed closed season will be Nov. 1 through April 30 and June 1 through July 31. Recreational fishing will be open August through October and in May. The change in fishing year is expected to improve recreational fishermen’s access to greater amberjack. It is expected to provide an opportunity to harvest this species when other targeted reef fish species are prohibited from harvest. The recreational fixed closed season was Jan. 1 through June 30. The intent of this closure for 2018 was to provide the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council more time to consider the most appropriate recreational closed season. The new fixed closed season of Nov. 1 through April 30 and June 1 through July 31 is expected to protect the greater amberjack population during peak spawning and still allow for spring and fall recreational harvest.

t’s that time of year again to dust off the rods and reels for the 25th Anniversary Sebastian Exchange Club Foundation’s (SECF) Blue Water Open Charity Offshore Tournament. With such a special anniversary, there will be many surprises. Over the previous 24 years the tournament has raised more than $567,000, all of which has gone back to the community and the causes SECF supports. The Exchange Club is all about the prevention of child abuse
as well as supporting many area youth-oriented services and organizations. A few of these are Boys & Girls Clubs of Indian River County, Youth Guidance, Shiloh Youth Ranch, CASTLE, Sebastian Soccer, Sebastian River High School Crew, and the list goes on! This year’s tournament will be held again at Capt. Hiram’s Resort on Indian River Drive in Sebastian. On June 1, there will be a captain’s meeting and party, starting with registration at 5 p.m. and the captain’s meeting at 6 p.m. This is a great party and an added benefit to the actual tournament. There will be all kinds of drawings as well as a live auction. We have an awesome shirt designed for this year’s tournament, which will be available for purchase. On Saturday, June 2, fishing starts with lines in at 6 a.m. The weigh in starts at 2 p.m., with a cutoff of 5 p.m. If you haven’t been to one of these exciting events, now is the time. Fishing is predicted to be fantastic this year, and watching fishermen bring in some monster fish is very exciting. They will be vying for a chance to win part of a guaranteed $19,000 purse. The four main-board payouts will be for grouper, kingfish, wahoo and dolphin. Payouts for the four categories are: 1st place-$1,250, plus a 25th anniversary bonus of $250; 2nd place-$600, plus a 25th anniversary bonus of $150; 3rd place-$400, plus a 25th anniversary bonus of $100; 4th place-$250, plus a 25th anniversary bonus of $50. Some of the other divisions include Junior and Lady Angler. Along with the main board, there is a $1,000 prize for the largest cobia and amberjack. But wait… there’s more! The William Knapstein Memorial award is an additional $1,000 for the largest grouper. This is donated by his family in his memory. And… there is a bonus board payout of $200, plus a 25th anniversary bonus of $30 for the next 10 places knocked off the main board. So bring the kids, come on out to Capt. Hiram’s June 1-2 for some great fun and a chance to support good causes. For more information, visit www.bluewateropen.com or call Michael Natale at 772-664-0525 or event chair Eva Chapman at 772-783-5822.

verything about the Bahamas holds a special place in my heart. Forty-five years later, whether I am chartering Duchess or guiding my clients on their own boats, I still feel the excitement of seeing the Bahama Bank as if it were for the first time. Introducing new friends or returning old friends back to the islands never gets dull. Docking at Rosie’s Place on Grand Cay, Old Bahama Bay in West End, or Orchid Bay on Guana Cay, I know we will be welcomed by our island friends and enjoy the rich hospitality that each one provides. Everyone knows my favorite fishing is for pelagic fish. It never gets old hearing the squeal of the reel as a wahoo, dolphin, tuna or marlin strikes the lures of my design. I also enjoy shutting down the diesels and drifting over the reef with spinning rods catching grouper and snapper. I enjoy eating our catch when we arrive and also look forward to seeing my local Bahamian friends who dive and fish, come to the dock to sell us lobster and stone crab, in season, and conch. Fresh bread brought to the docks by the local ladies goes perfectly with the huge bowl of conch salad I make every time I am there. My last trip was extremely special, as I had my son Allan, grandson Marlin, and longtime friends the Sultan family on board the Duchess. We arrived in Grand Cay for Homecoming and The Joe Flanigan Memorial Tournament. Big Joe was my mentor and close friend. His family holds the tournament every year in honor of their father, who loved fishing and diving the Abacos. This event allowed me to visit with old friends and generations of Grand Cay residents. I feel fortunate that my life’s direction has taken me to places in the Bahamas that bring me and others I have shared it with so much joy. Capt. Billy Black has been fishing the productive offshore waters of Florida’s Treasure Coast and the northern Bahamas for decades. Over the years, he has nurtured many great relationships with the Bahamas and its people fishing the classic 50 ft. Hatteras Duchess.

ver the years, much has been written about the Western North Carolina trout waters of Brevard, Sylva and Cherokee. And for good reason – each of those areas possesses popular waters regularly stocked by the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission. One place that has traditionally flown under the radar is Hendersonville. If you’re looking for a new spot to fish in the North Carolina mountains, or simply prefer fishing less-crowded waters, Hendersonville and Henderson County offer a nice supply of stocked and native streams that are not as well-known. North Mills River is the prime trout fishing venue in Henderson County. The river has a 4-mile section of delayed harvest waters that receives an annual infusion of 11,000 trout from N.C. Wildlife. May is a great time to fly fish the delayed harvest waters of North Mills River because no trout have been harvested since Sept. 30, and it’s designated only for artificial, single-hook lures at that time. Beginning at noon the first Saturday in June and running through Sept. 30, the waters are open to all anglers with no bait restrictions, with a creel limit of seven trout per day. Another nice thing about fishing North Mills River is its location. It is part of the North Mills River Recreation Area of the Pisgah National Forest, which offers camping and miles of wild trout waters, along with hiking trails, biking trails and picnic shelters. North Mills River Campground is open year-round with 31 standard sites, plus one site with full hook-up. There are tent pads, fire pits and bathhouses with hot showers and flush toilets. The campground is adjacent to the delayed harvest section of North Mills River, and also a short drive from the more well-known Davidson River trout waters near Brevard. Other well-kept secrets for fishing in Henderson County are three streams on the eastern side of the county, about 20 to 30 minutes from downtown Hendersonville. Rocky Broad River has a 1.2-mile stretch of hatchery supported waters from Rocky River Lane to the Rutherford County line near Chimney Rock, while Cane Creek, near the Fletcher community, has a 1.5-mile stretch of hatchery supported waters. For those who really want an undiscovered gem, there’s an 8-mile stretch of hatchery-supported waters on Clear Creek, which flows through the hills and valleys of Henderson County’s apple orchards in the shadows of Bearwallow Mountain. Of course, many anglers like to fish secluded areas, while sleeping in more comfortable quarters, and there is no shortage of lodging in Hendersonville. Everything from economy to deluxe hotels, from rental cabins to vacation rentals to bed-and-breakfast inns are available in Hendersonville. And when the fishing is done, Hendersonville provides plenty of options for exploring the outdoors, listening to music, sipping craft beverages and enjoying great meals. DuPont State Recreational Forest lies just southwest of Hendersonville. The forest includes more than 10,000 acres of woods and trails for hiking and biking. The most popular attractions within the forest are waterfalls. Triple Falls has a vertical drop of 120 feet with
three distinct cascades. DuPont’s pristine falls and forests attracted film crews from “Last of the Mohicans” and “The Hunger Games.” An awesome view of the Mills River Valley is available from Jump Off Rock, one of the more easily accessible grand views in the North Carolina mountains. Less than 15 minutes from Hendersonville’s Main Street, Jump Off Rock features a small park leading to a granite rock with spectacular panoramic views of the river valley framed by the Blue Ridge and Great Smoky Mountains. On a clear day, four states—North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee—are visible from this spot. Hendersonville’s music scene thrives with support from its summer concert series. Music on Main Street brings a live band downtown every Friday night from mid-June to mid-August. The concerts take place on the permanent stage in the Visitor Center parking lot. People kick back in lawn chairs as the sun sets. A classic car show is held each evening in conjunction with the concert. Meanwhile, the Rhythm & Brews concert series combines the local beverage scene with live music once a month from May through September. The concerts take place on the third Thursday and include a variety of music, food, beer, wine and cider. A stroll through the pedestrian-friendly downtown, with its wide, winding sidewalks, reveals bear statues painted by local artists. The Bearfootin’ Art Walk begins in May when 20 bears are placed downtown and concludes with a charity auction in October when the bears find their permanent homes. The abundance of orchards makes Henderson County an ideal location for the emerging hard cider market. Three cideries now operate in the county: Flat Rock Ciderworks on Main Street, Bold Rock Hard Cider in Mills River and Appalachian Ridge Artisan Ciders in a 1940s-era barn-turned-cidery. The Cheers! Trail brings together cideries, wineries and breweries for a countywide tasting experience. Two vineyards produce high-quality wines from European varietals. Burntshirt Vineyards also makes an apple wine. Sierra Nevada’s new state-of-the-art brewery and taproom is a mecca for craft-beer aficionados. Downtown Hendersonville boasts 25 independent restaurants, and several of them offer alfresco dining on the sidewalks. Never Blue, a tapas-style restaurant with worldly flavors, rolls up its garagedoor front on pleasant evenings. Diners enjoy small plate delicacies, creative tacos and decadent desserts. Postero, another Main Street standout, presents New American fare that is both familiar, yet innovative. The chicken and waffles dish is garnished with foie gras maple syrup, and kimchi rémoulade tops the lunchtime burger. The menu changes seasonally and showcases local ingredients. Another downtown hot spot is Mezzaluna, specializing in wood-fired pizzas and homemade pastas. Mezzaluna has a chefdriven menu with Italian influences complemented by a craft beer lineup that is heavy on local labels. Just up the street, Umi serves fresh sushi and sashimi, and several bento boxes for those who want to try a little of everything. ho doesn’t have a smile on their face when they’re spending time on the water? You can’t help yourself. Boating is the definition of getting away from it all. And getting away from it all is always more fun with friends. This is where the United States Power Squadrons – America’s Boating Club comes in. Enjoying your time on the water with family and friends starts with being safe and responsible while having fun. That’s what makes America’s Boating Club different than most boating organizations. For over a hundred years, the organization’s focus has been on providing unsurpassed boating safety education. But the organization’s leadership and members are passionate about a membership that doesn’t end on Sunday and doesn’t care if the calendar says it’s winter. It’s about being together and building a community through a variety of events like parties, meetings and even just getting together for no reason at all. Driven by this passion, United States Power Squadrons – America’s Boating Club, the country’s largest nonprofit boating organization, just launched its new logo. This is the first of several planned updates in the organization’s new brand image and identity. Changes to the organization’s website, social media platforms and collateral are expected in the coming weeks. “We are United States Power Squadrons, but we are also America’s Boating Club,” said Gary Cheney, chief commander, United States Power Squadrons. “This is not just a name change, it describes what we do. We go boating and have fun doing it. Our squadrons are social clubs as well as providers of high quality boating education – allowing members to enjoy the sport and camaraderie of boating and any number of activities that keep us together. Togetherness is what this lifestyle is all about. We joined the organization for the boating education, but we stayed for the friends.”
Offering classes For Boaters, By Boaters in boat handling, navigation, boat maintenance, weather and related subjects, United States Power Squadrons – America’s Boating Club serves as a virtual “yacht club” with boating and social activities for all types of recreational boaters. With over 27,000 members organized into 356 local clubs across the country, America’s Boating Club is comprised of families who contribute to their communities by promoting safe boating through education. Members are vital to strengthening the communities they live in and know it’s important to live their values by giving back through public service and volunteer opportunities. Members provide courtesy vessel safety checks, help the NOAA’s National Ocean Service keep nautical charts accurate and organize beach cleanups. “Our commitment is to continue learning, teaching, laughing and helping our fellow members enjoy boating,” continued Cheney. “Whether you’re passionate about cruising, racing, making new friends, volunteering in your community or learning from experienced boaters, your local squadron has the resources you need to engage your passions and, perhaps, instill some new ones.” In February of 2017, the United States Power Squadrons announced its America’s Boating Club co-brand to its squadrons, following an almost yearlong re-naming exercise. Popticals Are Performance Glasses
Without The Hassle
For any outdoor adventure—whether it’s hiking, fishing or camping—you need high-performance sunglasses. No matter if it’s a day hike or a multi-day camping trip, sports sunglasses keep your eyes safe when you’re outside and enhance your vision to make your experience even better. The problem is, there’s nowhere to keep your sunglasses when it’s time to take them off. Cases are too big and take up valuable pack space. They’re big and bulky in your pocket, if they even fit there. Most resort to hanging expensive glasses on a strap around their necks or
perching them on their heads. That’s no way to treat a valuable piece of equipment. Without protection, your sunglasses end up scratched, lost or broken, and you didn’t just hike into the backcountry to view breathtaking vistas through scratched lenses. Popticals are the solution to this dilemma. They are good-looking, high-performance, polarized sports sunglasses that fold down to a small profile and fit in a portable, durable case. Popticals feature the patented FL2 Micro-Rail System, which is a breakthrough design that allows for folding sunglasses that are sturdy and hold up to rugged use. The case is less than half the size of cases for most comparable high-performance sunglasses. Slip it into your pocket, where it is unobtrusive. Throw it in your backpack without having to worry about damage to your frames or lenses. Or clip it with the attached carabiner to the outside of your gear, where your shades will be safe but easily accessible. In addition to taking up less space when stored, Popticals are also lightweight. With NYDEF nylon lenses manufactured for Popticals by Carl Zeiss Vision, they weigh significantly less than glasses with glass lenses without sacrificing on clarity or performance. Popticals feature high-quality polarized lenses but weigh less, which makes them more comfortable on your face for all-day wear. For backpackers, it also cuts down on the load your shoulders will be hauling. “Pack Small. Live Big” is a motto Popticals has adopted. The idea is that your gear should enhance your experience, not weigh down or inconvenience you. With Popticals, you’ll have clearer, better vision for your adventure. And when you don’t have them on, you won’t have to worry about them being lost, scratched or broken. For more on Popticals and to see all of their sunglasses, go to www. popticals.com.
SEE MORE. CATCH MORE. PopH2O with NYDEF™ lens technology lets you see sharper details beneath the surface of the water to catch the fish your buddies can’t even see. Polarized NYDEF™ nylon lenses made by Carl Zeiss enhance your vision with the clarity of a glass lens at a fraction of the weight. Spend less time guessing at what you’re seeing in the water, and more time catching fish. #SeeMoreFishCatchMoreFish

The Ultimate Fish Attractor!

The BoJo Fishlight is no ordinary fishlight. The unique design feeds your fish by knocking bugs into the water… still alive! The unit has two fluorescent bulbs that attract bugs. Once bugs come to the light, an electric motor with weed eater-cord blades knocks bugs into the water where fish eat them all night long. The Bo-Jo Fishlight works great on fresh or saltwater, on ocean docks, large lakes and small ponds. Bugs come to the light, bugs get knocked in the water, baitfish feed on bugs, big fish feed on baitfish, and you catch the big fish! The device is simple to install. The durable docklights also give you illumination to enjoy nighttime activities and costs less than a nickel a night to operate. Compared with the cost of mechanical feeders, the device will pay for itself in the first year. For more information and to watch a video, see the website or scan the barcode. PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT Road Shower THE SOLAR SHOWER OF THE FUTURE IS HERE!
Running water is nice to have when you’re on the road to adventure, but many times it is awfully hard to find. The Road Shower is like adding plumbing to the rack of your vehicle. It gives outdoors enthusiasts easy access to hot or cold pressurized water wherever the road takes them. It’s simple; mount The Road Shower to the roof rack, fill the tank with water and let the sun do the rest. With a handy temperature gauge, it’s easy to watch the progress as solar power heats the water inside at a rate of 12 to 20 degrees per hour on a sunny day. By the time you return from a trail ride or day of fishing, there could be water hotter than 100 degrees waiting for you to take a shower. But cleaning your body is just one use for this handy invention. Hot water makes cleaning the camp dishes a breeze. Good water pressure is invaluable for rinsing down muddy kayaks, boards, bikes, boots or pets. And The Road Shower can be used for drinking water as well. The Road Shower is available in 4-, 7-, or 10-gallon models. It is constructed of powder-coated aluminum with very few extra parts, so it is extremely durable and built to last a lifetime. The unit can be pressurized automatically while filling it with a garden hose, and pressurization can also be achieved with a bike pump or other inflation tools where there is no hose available.

Bluefin A State Record
A
n 877-pound bluefin tuna was caught off Oregon Inlet, N.C. on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17. The North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries recently certified it as a new state record. Retired Army Gen. Scott Chambers of Townsend, Delaware, reeled in the huge fish while fishing aboard Capt. Dennis Endee’s A-Salt Weapon out of Pirates Cove Marina in Manteo, N.C. Chambers battled the fish for 2 ½ hours on 130-pound test line with a Shimano 130 rod and reel. The fish measured nearly 9 ½ feet curved fork length (tracing the contour of the body from the tip of the nose to the fork in the tail), and it had a girth of 79 inches. Regulations dictate that trophy bluefin tuna longer than 73 inches must be released in the Atlantic south of Great Egg Inlet, N.J. after 11:30 p.m. on March 17, 2018. Chambers was hours from having to release his state record catch when it ate a trolled dead bait. Coming in just under the wire, Chambers’ fish crushed the previous recreational state record by 72 pounds. That 805-pound fish was caught in 2011. The all-tackle world record was caught off Nova Scotia in 1979. It weighed 1,496 pounds. Bluefin tuna much larger than this new state record are known to come from North Carolina waters. According to The Outer Banks Voice, a bluefin heavier than 1,000 pounds was caught this winter, but it was sold to a dealer and was not eligible for the record.
