SOUTHWEST FLORIDA

By Capt. Cefus McRae, Nuts & Bolts of Fishing Series

I

spend a lot of time on the water, but I still get excited every time I go fishing. The thrill of feeling the strike and hearing a drag sing, and ultimately landing the fish puts a smile on my face that’s hard to wipe off. Years ago, a great friend and charter captain from Steinhatchee, Fla., Capt. Brian Smith, invited me to go on a “thrill fishing” trip. I didn’t know exactly what that meant, and I had certainly never caught a “thrill” fish. Was it some newly discovered deep-water species? As Capt. B explained, the objective was to simply go have fun and experience the thrill of fishing again. We weren’t focusing on

a particular fish or even a particular style of fishing. We were out there to have fun. When I thought about it, this made perfect sense. A lot of us have forgotten the thrill of fishing. We’re so wrapped up in competing in a tournament. Or we’re too serious about catching fish because it’s the only weekend we have to get away. We become so focused on fishing that we forget to have fun. That thrill-fishing experience with Brian brought things back in to perspective. Thrill fishing is pretty easy, especially in a salty environment because the variety is tremendous. You set out a trolling spread of natural and artificial baits and wait for a rod to bend. There’s typically something out there eager to play. One of my favorites is the under-appreciated bonito. When they’re schooling, you can catch them on just about anything shiny that makes a commotion. And they put up a fight that equals a fish twice their size. They are an absolutely beautiful fish, although not at the top of my list for table fare. Enjoy the fight, take a photo, and send them back to the briny depths. Barracuda also rate high on my thrill-fish list. They will eat just about anything, and they are quick to take a trolled lure like a big tube eel. They jump, they tug hard, and there’s the excitement of having something toothy at the boat. Now, thrill fishing doesn’t necessarily mean you’re after “trash fish.” Big grouper will rise off the bottom and attack a big diving plug. It’s kind of like opening presents at Christmas, you don’t really know what might be in the box. It’s all about the experience. This is especially true with kids, or with folks who don’t fish very often. With a crew of kids, the most fun of the day can be when we’re catching bait. A four-inch pinfish is a trophy to a five year old, and a foot-long blue runner is a monster. As many of us know, attitude plays a large role in how your day on the water goes. Since that eye-opening trip with Capt. Brian, I am continually reminded that fishing is as much about the thrill as it is about what you put in the cooler. Capt. Cefus McRae hosts the TV show Nuts & Bolts of Fishing on Fox Sports South.

or some time I’ve been interested in how fishermen in different times and places fish. I’d like to think I can become a better angler by looking at different cultures and time periods, maybe learning from successful practices around the world and avoiding those that don’t work. Some time ago in this column, I wrote about the fish wheels that natives in Alaska use and suggested other fishermen could employ such wheels in rivers all over the country. This time I’d like to discuss a really unusual type of fishing: from stilts. The Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO) tells us that the world has around 38 million fishermen, including commercial fishermen. I also learned that fisheries and aquaculture operations provide employment to over 500 million people in developing countries. That figure does not include recreational fishermen. The attached photo of stilt fishermen in Sri Lanka by Bernard Gagnon depicts a scene that a lot of us have never seen in person. The fishermen patiently sit on their stilts waiting for the fish that they expect will pass by them in the shallow waters below or over the coral reef. The practice goes back about seven or eight decades and doesn’t seem to have evolved too much. It seems to have begun during World War II, when overcrowded conditions and food shortages forced enterprising fishermen to try different methods of catching fish. After using the wrecks of downed airplanes and capsized ships from which to cast their lines, the men actually built their first stilts over the coral reefs,

which provided a sturdy base on which to build their flimsylooking wooden mini-towers. Or they thrust their poles deep into the sand beneath the water and tied a cross bar to the vertical pole. They would then carefully climb up poles and perch in what seems like a precarious position. The fishermen go out at dawn and dusk, cast their lines into the water, and wait for the passing schools of fish. Lucky anglers can catch herring or mackerel passing by, but the occasional monsoons and tsunamis have altered the coastline too much to make stilt fishing very viable today. It’s true that some of the local fishermen pose on the stilts for camera-toting tourists, especially when the fish are not running or when the threat of monsoons might drive away the fish and the anglers. The practice will probably die out because it is so hard and has diminishing results as the ocean there changes and as villagers move inland to get away from tsunamis. I doubt if the practice of stilt fishing will catch on in Florida, but I still find it useful and informative to see how anglers throughout the world fish. PRIME TIME FISHING IN SW FLORIDA by Capt. Terry Fisher he month of December marks the beginning of winter for T fishing. The tide levels become much lower than those of previous months, restricting access to areas of Pine Island

Sound, Matlacha Pass and the waters surrounding San Carlos Bay. Notwithstanding the fact that the past two Decembers have been very warm and pleasant, signs of winter are all around us in the manner of northern winds, cooler water temperatures, fish migrating southward and inward. Another sign that winter has arrived is ‘White’ Pelicans flying around Pine Island Sound. This year they arrived in good numbers during November, marking the time for a ‘Change in Attitude’ and a ‘Change in Strategy’, both offshore and inshore. Water temperature will determine bait availability inshore and offshore. So, long as the water temperatures remain mild, baitfish will remain inshore and the Spanish Mackerel will be around. When water temperatures get too cool, the mackerel will follow the baitfish offshore. Likewise, water temps will determine locations of porgy’s, grunts, grouper, amberjack and mangrove snappers. As the water temperature drops, these fish may be found closer to the outer islands of Sanibel, N. Captiva, Cayo Costa and in the passes. Grouper will actually be caught around the docks and mangroves that have deeper holes. Pelagic species such as Kingfish and cobia will be on the move as well. Inshore, larger seatrout will start to appear on the grass flats. redfish and snook will hold in the passes, under docks, in canals and creek mouths. Canals will be loaded with large Crevalle Jacks and small tarpon. Larger mangrove snapper maybe be found in Redfish Pass, N. Captiva Pass and Boca Grande. Flounder will lay on hard bottom with strong current cuts. Sheepshead is the ‘real’ story for inshore, now through February. Large numbers and these large fish will move in from the Gulf of Mexico for their annual spawn. They will be around ‘deserted’ piles, under docks in canals, passes and mangroves. My strategy for catching these is to anchor up and chum with ‘chopped’ up shrimps. Scrapping off the barnacles on the piles will also get these fish excited (that is why they are holding there). Use light spinning rods and reels with 10 to 20lb line test. Attach a 30lb. fluorocarbon leader with a #1 or #2 hook. I prefer to use small shrimp for bait (that is why I ‘chum’ with shrimp, so as to ‘match the hatch’). Some anglers prefer to use ‘Fiddler’ Crabs. They are often referred to as ‘Sheepshead Candy’. They are found crawling along mangrove

roots, making them natural bait for Sheepshead. However, they are not always readily available at the bait shops. They are expensive and hard to put and keep on a hook. Sheepshead have a reputation of being hard to catch. That is far from the truth when they are feeding (all fish are hard to catch when they are not feeding)! The bite is usually a soft tug. That is when one sets the hook. If the bite is rapid and hard, it is usually small mangrove snapper. Sheepshead will feed in spurts for a period of time. The big ones will eat for a while, then the smaller ones will eat. When they are done, the smaller trash fish and little snappers will feed. I recommend changing locations when the small Mangrove Snapper and other ‘trash’ fish bite(s) turn on. SANTA’S HELPER (Equipment Recommendations) OFFSHORE: Spinning rod and reel sizes; 6 ½ foot 40 to 100 lb. Jigging Rod with a 4500 to 5000 series spinning reel. I use Shimano Rods with either Shimano or Diawa Reels. I use 40 lb. Power Pro Braid test line with a 20 to 40 lb. Fluorocarbon leader. 2/0 to 4/0 Circle Hooks. INSHORE: Spinning rod and reel sizes; 6 ½ to 7 foot (fast action tips) 8/17lb. or 10/20lb. test strength rod with a 3000 to 4000 series reel. I use Shimano, Penn and Diawa rods with either Shimano Saros, Diawa and Penn Battle reels. I recommend 10 to 15 lb. Power Pro braided line and 20 to 30lb. monofilament or fluorocarbon leader (fluorocarbon for redfish, snook and sheepshead) for live baits as well as artificial presentations. Light tackle of the sort will provide anglers with the sensitivity required to detect a bite and more fun when fighting the fish. Heavier equipment for inshore use is not necessary except when fishing in the spring and summer for migrating tarpon! Please be sure and make your purchases from a retailer that advertises in Coastal Angler Magazine, as they are the best at what they do. This is Captain Terry Fisher wishing everyone Merry Christmas. Seasonal Changes by Capt. Sam O’Briant his year has all but disappeared. It is time to change over to T our second season – tourist season. Why is this important to us as fishermen? The two main reasons I see right off are the

increase boating traffic and the increase fishing pressure put on the fish. If we have a normal December we could expect some of the coldest temperatures of the year around Christmas. However, if it is like last year we can plan a summer type outing for Christmas. Let us plan on a normal December with cooler temperatures. The snook should be up the creeks and rivers. If the water temperature drops much below 65 degrees, snook become lethargic to the extent that you can almost pick them up. Being subtropical, if the water temperature drops into the 50s, they will go belly up on us. Do not forget that snook season closed on November 30 at midnight. Another fish that does not appear to be affected by water temperatures is the Spanish mackerel. You can look around the passes for Spanish. There will also be a few schools marauding throughout Pine Island Sound. They will generally hit a silver

spoon, live bait, or shrimp. If you do not use a steel leader you can expect some cut offs. Regardless of the type mackerel you are catching, their teeth are extremely sharp and will cut a mono leader in a split second. As the water cools, we will have the little convict fish (sheepshead) move in. You will find them around any place that they can find barnacles growing. If you are targeting sheepshead be ready for the little nibble. They are used to eating the barnacles then spitting out the shell or hook in our case. This means you must strike on the first nibble. Then there is our favorite fish whether we admit it or not – speckled trout. This species can be found all the way up to New Jersey. This indicates that as a species they can take cold weather. On the other hand, our trout do take a day or two to acclimate after a cold front comes through. The speckled trout you are looking for should be over the grass flats in water from about 6 feet to 2 ½ feet. If a front has come through the grass flats will heat up faster due to the dark background from the grass. As always shrimp will work or for larger ones live bait. If you are looking for a gift for your fisherman but do not feel you know enough about fishing to pick out something, do not be afraid to ask your local bait and tackle shop proprietor. They are all quite knowledgeable of the local area and will spend time with you. Here’s hoping each and everyone has a most fantastic and Merry Christmas as well as a safe New Year. Capt. Sam is a local licensed guide for hire who may be reached at 239-994-1495 or captainobriant@gmail.com

ello fellow anglers. It’s December once again and I pray H that this is a great time of year for you and your family. Preparations of Christmas should be well under way. If not,

a gift certificate for a fishing trip for that loved one you don’t know what they may like or use, could solve that problem. This time of year, there will be several species to target. Inshore reds, snook, trout, pompano, flounder, sheepshead, and mangrove snapper. Reds along the edges of the mangroves and the mouths of creeks, live shrimp, or cut baits- lady fish- blue crabs, pin fish. Snook, catch and release, but fun. Flounder on sandy bottom near moving current where they can feed on unsuspecting baits. Trout on the grass flats, along the pockets of sand, hiding against the grass. Popping cork w/shrimp or suspending lure, catch 2000 works well also. Mangrove snapper around rocks, docks, and mangroves with oysters. They like structure that will hold bait. Pompano swimming along the edges of the bars and in the passes along the edges, in search of food. Jigs, shrimp, and sand fleas all work well as bait for these fast-moving targets.

Checking in on what is happening offshore. Yea, the gag grouper closes at the end of the year. I like trolling for these fine table fare, x-raps or stretch 30s. Yes, troll over the close reefs and natural bottoms to harvest these guys or in the passes where there is some course bottom/rocky. If you are a trolling angler, there should be plenty of king and Spanish mackerel to troll for. I like #1 planer w/bait size spoon 6ft. behind to catch these toothy critters. Put some wire on the planer and in front of the spoon, it looks like a bait they will try to eat it. It is shiny and moving through the water, 12” is enough. While you are trolling, check the crab pot buoys for triple tail and toss a shrimp to see if they are hungry. Out in the 30 to 60 ft. depths, bottom fishing will have grunts, snapper, porgies, hogfish, and groupers. Use frozen baits to start the bite and when it slows drop a shrimp or any live bait you can find to keep it going. And be patient, after all that is when the hogfish will slide in for a shrimp or small crabs, too. Merry Christmas and if you need a gift certificate or would like to go along with Capt. Fish On by Fishin’ Frank ad starts reeling in a fish, D so I go to reel in the other. Too late, I notice the wind,

not the fish, has blown the line from one rod across the other rod and then one in the next one and cluster! Get out the line cutter and re-rig. Dad is still fighting the fish. One of the tangled lines is tangled with the one with the fish, so I get his line cut loose and he lands the trout, just a bit too short. So, we moved closer to an island to get out of the wind a bit, good idea, right? Stopping just a couple islands north of Pirate Harbor, we anchored the boat and cast up close to the island with one rod, using a sinker on the leader with a live shrimp. Second rod we put a float on and cast it in front of the island, where we knew there was a slight trough. Then fish on; Dad got a hit. Weird thing is, the fish had not pulled, but instead swam a little towards the boat, then off to the side, wrapping that line with the other two we had out. So, he did not know the fish was hooked up until it was a tangled mess. I saw where the fish was headed and tried to get the lines in. What I should have done was reel in my line from the front of the boat, as while I started reeling in the last one, the fish saw its chance to make life really miserable and shot straight to the front of the boat and tangled that line as well. So here we are holding rods that are tied together with a huge knot in the middle and 4 lines going everywhere. Still a fish on. And yes, it was a cat fish- a 2 ½ pound hardhead catfish who decided to get even for any bad things I have said about them and we let it go after cutting the lines and hauling it in hand-over-hand. This trip was about tangles and busted lines. OK the fish won the first two rounds, so we switched up. Only one rod for each of us and we started drifting. Dad with a shrimp and a split shot, me with a shrimp under a float. Fish on. Yes, it was steady fishing and catching easy as you please. My lesson of the day, one rod, one line when the wind or tide is really going fast. Two rods don’t make a catch. your kayak as you approach a dock so you don’t spook the fish. One real advantage is that the fish will not hear your approach and may never see you casting around and under the structures. Dock fishing is usually best done at night, but I love fishing them just as dawn is breaking or as night fall arrives. You should have a 360º light on the back of your kayak and maybe a head lamp to help you, when landing fish or changing gear. When I’m dock fishing I often use my stick-it pin as most fish will dive under the dock once hooked, leaving you helpless to control your kayak. Braid line is a must for dock fishing here in S.W. Florida as all the dock posts are covered in barnacles and more importantly, oyster shells! Redfish and snook always seek shelter when hooked, so your drag and line strength have to hold and turn them away from the dock posts immediately or you risk losing them. Depending on the time of year any number of fish can be found under or around a dock. Snook are notorious for using docks for shelter and as an ambush point, as they use the shadow line in the water to mask their presence, waiting for the tide to push bait fish past their hidden location. My favorite artificial is the natural color Exude Shrimp from Mister Twister on a weighted twist lock hook, set up weedless, so you can pitch them way under the structure. Another favorite is top water right along the shadow line that brings out those explosive strikes! Snook behavior is so easy to watch if you sit back and observe them under a dock with a snook light. If you’re dedicated to a lifetime of fishing, then take the time to study fish as they go about their routine, put your rod down and just watch. Often fly fisherman will spend up to an hour on a stream watching fish feed and insects hatch to establish a pattern of behavior. Redfish are another favorite dock lover, but tend to move around from dock to dock. Most of my redfish catches occur in between docks in the shallow water close to shore as they cruise back and forth searching for that next meal. Big reds will hold close to the dock piling facing into the current using the post for cover, darting out to catch unsuspecting bait, especially live shrimp presented slowly toward them on the bottom. Sheepshead are the most fun to catch around docks and pilings. Catching these tasty fish is a bit art and a bit technique. Small hooks, shrimp and lightning reflexes will help you extract them. Black drum and mangrove snapper round out the usual suspects. It’s a wild world-get out there? Fishman Dan, Gulf Coast Kayak, 4120 Pine Island Rd NW, Matlacha, FL 33993, (239) 283-1125

Calusa Blueway Speaker Series by Mike Hammond he Calusa Blueway Speaker Series was among my favorite T features of the former Calusa Blueway Paddling Festival. The series was popular among local paddlers and covered an

array of topics. When the festival ended, we wanted to be sure to continue the program. Now, we incorporate the speaker series into annual Blueway programs and events. The speakers offer a diverse portfolio of expertise including history, wildlife, paddling technique, fishing and camping. Paddlers have embraced the educational series and the program has grown year by year. This is our fourth year hosting the Calusa Blueway Speaker Series. I wonder if the community room at the Wa-Ke Hatchee Recreation Center is still large enough to host the program? Our first talk in December will be a good test. Dan Carns is returning this year (Dec. 5th). He is one of our most admired speakers and a frequent contributor to this magazine. Anyone who knows Dan knows he can find fish and loves to share his knowledge with other anglers. He usually brings two fully rigged kayaks for a fun, interactive experience. We will host many other engaging speakers in the coming months. In January (9th), Warren Richey will share adventures from his book and information about the WaterTribe’s legendary Ultimate Florida Challenge, a non-motorize vessel race around Florida. Warren is the author of “Without a Paddle, Racing Twelve Hundred Miles Around Florida by Sea Kayak.” I read the book a couple years ago and can’t wait to hear him speak. In February (6th), Parke Lewis will speak on Southwest Florida’s indigenous Calusa people and the Mound House, an active archaeological dig site and museum on Fort Myers Beach. Parke is an avid paddler, American Canoe Association instructor and volunteer at the Mound House. Historical knowledge of the Calusa, provided by a local paddler, enhances the Southwest Florida paddling experience. Paddler tip: the Mound House has a great paddle-craft launch. For our final speaker in the Calusa Blueway Speaker Series is Tommy Thompson (March 6th). Tommy has led international kayaking, cycling, climbing and trekking trips on four continents. He is the current Florida State Director of the Florida’s American Canoe Association and Level-4 Coastal Kayak instructor. Tommy has a wealth of adventures to share from many different regions, but in this series, he will discuss paddling in Cuba. We hope to have him back again next year. Whether you want to be inspired by the adventures of another paddler, pick up some paddling tips for the next trip of your own, or just meet fellow paddlers in the area, come out to the Calusa Blueway Speaker Series. For a complete schedule and registration information, please go to: https:// paddleguru.com/races/BattleontheBlueway2017 Mike Hammond is based in Fort Myers, Florida, and is a staff member at Lee County Parks & Recreation. He is the Calusa Blueway coordinator for Lee County.

on a consignment basis, direct purchase of boats for resale or accepting trade-ins toward the purchase of a new C-Hawk or Mitzi Skiff. Whatever the circumstances, whether the boat is being sold through Sunset Dreams or another boat dealership, there are a number of factors that will affect the resale value. Obviously, the age and type of boat as well as the age, type and size of the motor are probably the biggest factors in pricing but they are also beyond your control. Boats more than 10 years old may be difficult to finance and may limit your market to cash buyers. Boats with 4 stroke motors are in demand; 2 stroke motors along with inboards or I/O motors are very hard to sell. The point is that despite what the NADA or book value suggests as the retail value of your boat, the value is dramatically diminished if the boat will sit on a sales lot for a year or more before a buyer can be found. There are several steps a boat seller can take which will increase the value of the boat and promote a quick sale at an above average price. First among these is to make sure the boat is clean inside and out with extra attention paid to buffing and waxing the hull including compounding or wet sanding to eliminate signs of oxidation of the gel coat… first impression is everything. Empty and clean compartments and hatches discarding any accumulated debris and leaving only safety or utility items that will be of some value to the buyer. Eliminate as many signs of rust as possible and don’t neglect the upholstery. It is futile to try to sell a boat and motor if the motor is not functional. Make sure not only the motor but all switches, gauges and components are operable and have the work done professionally if necessary. New buyers will very often ask for service records and a recent history that shows engine hours and compression as well as dates when filters were changed and the water pump and impeller replaced or rebuilt. There are many venues for advertising your boat for sale if you intend to try to make the sale yourself. You can upload photos and details to Craigslist at no charge when advertising “For Sale by Owner”. Don’t neglect to check out local Facebook pages, for example the site “Boats for Sale in SWFL”. Consider using the services of Sunset Dreams in negotiating your boat sale. We have excellent exposure on Pine Island Road just east of the 4 way stop, the only land access to Pine Island. We can handle the preparation work, the advertising, the potential customers and the sale closing all for a small percentage of the final sale price. Fishing the Winter Waters by Capt. Mike Manis n the backcountry, where I spend most of my time, this Ichanges. month marks a true turning point where everything generally The transition that began late last month will come

full circle and cold fronts, strong winds and low tides dominate. Shallow flats chill quickly under these conditions. I won’t target snook as hopefully they’ll be laying low up the many creek and river systems. Fortunately, redfish and spotted sea trout flourish in the cooler environment; so, that’s where I’ll concentrate my efforts. In fact, these two species are related as they’re both part of the drum family. Because of the style I fish, fly and light tackle out of a small skiff, I’ll spend all my time fishing sand holes that are scattered throughout my favorite flats. When the wind is coming out of the north pushing out water on an already low tide, redfish and trout will gang up within these spots. Too, many times it’s the small sand holes that produce the best. By small, I’m referring to spots that are only a foot or two wide. Generally, the fish like to hold on the edge of the holes at the edge of the grass. I like small baits; for fly, small shrimp or baitfish patterns work well and I’ll even throw an intermediate sink tip line. Understandably, this line gets my fly down and because it’s a bit heavier, it helps punch the line into a stiff breeze. For spinning tackle, I like small plastic paddle tail and shrimp baits rigged on a standard 1/8 or ¼ ounce jig head. Due to the wind, I try and keep my run time to a minimum so not to take too much of a beating. Fortunately, there are several good areas not far from a ramp. For the most part, I’ll fish out of Ponce Park in Punta Gorda, the east side from Alligator Creek all the way down to Matlacha provides welcome lee shoreline protection from the persistent northeast wind. Also, don’t be surprised to hook into a few flounder working the sand holes. I’ve even caught them throwing a fly. Moreover, on milder days between fronts, there should be a good pompano bite on the hard bottom off Cape Haze Point. Around the corner outside the bar along the West Wall is also a great place. Keep an eye behind the boat and when a few skip your wake shut it down turn around a make a few casts, you never know. Because of the sheepshead bite, this is one of the best times of year to fish from shore. The Placida and Boca Grande trestles are great spots to drop a fiddler crab or piece of shrimp. Stop by any of our local tackle shops and they’ll set you up. Until next month, good tides. Captain Michael Manis is a U.S.G.C. Licensed captain and has been teaching the sport of fly and light tackle angling since 2002. He lives in Punta Gorda, Florida and can be reached at www.puntagordaflycharters.com.

e have been very fortunate this fall with the weather. The W past few weeks have been beautiful, the fishing has been great. The one thing anglers know that fish our area on a yearly

basis is we are one major cold front away from it changing. Sometimes change however, is good. The most important aspect is to make sure you change with it. So, what I’m going to do is make a prediction, I am going to tell my fellow anglers what I would do if a major cold front passes. When the water temps drop below the 70° mark, snook start taking a backseat to the inshore fishing scene. Don’t worry fellow anglers, this is not the end of our fishery. I know most people think that we only have good fishing here during the warmer months. This is not true, we also have great fishing here during the cooler months. You just have to change your approach. Also, you’re going to have to change your bait. Yepp, its time for shrimp to make their appearance on the scene. The best thing about these guys is everything will eat them. Some of the biggest fish I have ever caught was on a shrimp. Another thing is, the ways you can fish them are endless. I’ll go over some of the few basics that I prefer. My number one way is on a jig head. Most of the shrimp fishing that I do is on a jig head. The reason for this is simple. During the winter months, fish don’t want to chase their food down. A weighted jig will slow your presentation down so fish that are a little lethargic will eat it. My personal preference is chartreuse, but I recommend using what color you feel most comfortable fishing. My second choice would be using a popping cork. Most of the times when I use this technique I’m trying to keep my bait just above the bottom. Even though I am keeping my bait suspended, I will still use a jig head. The main reason I do this is I don’t want to get stuck in the structure on the bottom. This way of fishing works great over grassy bottoms. It also works great over areas that have oysters. Cooler water doesn’t necessarily mean the fishing will slow down. All it means is that you need to change your approach. Slow your presentation down and be a little bit more patient. ish everywhere you can. Well, that’s what I try to do. I am always thinking and searching for the right location for the current conditions. This could be the upcoming weekend in my local waters, a fair-weather destination while mine is blown out, or a place to set the hook while on a business trip or family vacation. Several years ago, my wife had to travel to Aruba for business. When she mentioned Aruba, the first thing I did was research the area she would be staying, from a fish-eye perspective. When I found it was on the beachfront, I was booking my flight. This was fly rod territory, so some casting practice was in order for me. I continued my research for species, tactics and tackle typically used in the area. I was open to catch anything, but bonefish were at the forefront of my list. You can never get enough information on fishing tactics and techniques, and I always search for new ways of doing things to hone my skills. If I am planning to fish a new area, species, or just wanting to learn more about my area, I find it helpful to use all available resources. Books, articles and videos, like the ones from Trout Support, are all great avenues to strengthen your skills. Conditions were perfect each day we were in Aruba. The wind was calm and the water was clear, which made spotting the fish easy. Each morning, I was able to land some jacks and other species that I didn’t identify, and I had a few shots at small bones and even a few tarpon. The tarpon were small and something I could potentially handle with my gear, but they kept their distance and never came into my casting range. As the tourists made their way out, I packed up my gear and headed away from the crowd. I spotted my first good-size bone, and as my adrenalin rushed I made my cast. The accuracy was right on target, but the line slapped against the water with force and away she went. The fact that I do not fly fish very often became obvious. I stayed in that area for a while practicing my cast to make it more natural while making my way down the shore picking up a few more jacks. Then I saw the shadow! I assessed the movement of the fish, calmed myself and made the cast. She streaked through the crystal-clear flat, causing me to fear the line would sever on the abundance of coral lining the sea floor. After a long and nerve-racking battle, I had my trophy in hand and watched her swim away. Destination fishing can be successful even without an outfitter if you do your research ahead of time. A little time studying can save you a lot of money, and the rewards can be just as good or better because you’ll know you did it yourself. Just remember to fish everywhere! Capt. Michael Okruhlik is the inventor of Controlled Descent Lures and the owner of www.MyCoastOutdoors.com.

EXPERT ADVICE

Gifts for Anglers Choosing Sunglasses As A Gift DAVID MANEY, FOWLER’S SUNGLASSES

C

hoosing a pair of sunglasses as a gift for someone else can be a tricky endeavor. On the one hand you have your opinion of what you think they will like and then there’s the issue of the fit and their face shape that can make all the difference in the world in their overall happiness with the pair that you’ve selected. Obviously, the best way to ensure your selection is exactly what they’re looking for is to have them help you. Go to your favorite sunglass seller, and let your friend try numerous pairs on. Then, once you know their favorite, the task is easy and foolproof. But if you’re not able to put that together prior to a purchase, the next best alternative is to make sure the company you’re buying the sunglasses from has an honest, no-loophole return policy. Yes, save your receipt. I also recommend including a small note with the sunglasses saying: I hope these fit, and are what you wanted. The store name here said you can exchange them if you like. At Fowler’s, we make sure our customers have an easy and helpful exchange process. The right pair of sunglasses can be a gift that is appreciated for many, many years, and we make giving the perfect gift a little bit easier.
