By CAM Staff A truck load of kayaks from Confluence Outdoors was overnighted to Texas for use in water rescues.

I

t was an historic hurricane season. With Harvey battering the Texas and Louisiana Gulf Coast and Irma strafing the length of Florida, damage from high winds and flooding was catastrophic. It is in such trying times that the American spirit shines. Harvey slammed ashore near Rockport, Texas on Aug. 25 and stalled out over southeast Texas, dropping up to 52 inches of rain over the next five days. The flooding was cataclysmic. Major highways turned to rivers and much of the Houston area was under water. Even as floodwaters rose, lines began forming on the sides of the highway. These were volunteers headed into the deluge to launch boats from freeway off-ramps. It looked like the launch line for the world’s largest fishing tournament. It was a proud moment for the fishing community. Anglers from all over the region rushed to the rescue pulling bass boats, jonboats and skiffs. Dubbed the Cajun Navy, this rag-tag bunch of heroes— along with official emergency response—conducted thousands of water recues. And response from the fishing and boating industries was strong as well. The following are few examples of how the fishing industry stepped in with a helping hand. Confluence Outdoors leaped into action as the magnitude of the flooding became clear. They overnighted a semi-truck load of Wilderness Systems and Perception kayaks to Houston. The boats, as well as paddles and PFDs provided by Confluence, were used in high-water rescue by Houston authorities. Honda went to work moving needed products like generators and water pumps to affected areas. And while Honda dealers went to work in rescue efforts, Honda Marine went to work making sure those dealers were stocked up to serve their communities with vital equipment. Additionally, Honda pledged $100,000 to the American Red Cross. The pledge will consist of a corporate contribution as well as a dollar-for-dollar matching gift program for Honda associate contributions. Evinrude immediately donated a boat and motor to a volunteer fire department in Lockport, Texas. The second phase of their relief effort was to deploy a wave of engines to area boatbuilders as well as food and clothing. Evinrude also agreed to match dollar-for-dollar donations to the American Red Cross made by employees. Suzuki, through its Texas dealers, donated boats, motors, ATVs and time to the rescue efforts. In addition, Suzuki provided two outboards to rescue efforts for Carolina Skiff boats that were on their way to Ron Hoover Marine, which has multiple locations in the affected area. Orvis recognized an immediate need for rain gear and wading gear. As well as supplying as many as they could, Orvis put the call out for individuals to ship waders, boots and rain jackets to the San Antonio Orvis location for distribution to rescue personnel. Platypus Fishing Line pledged to donate 100 percent of its website profits in September to the Red Cross Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund. The storms and damage from this season’s hurricanes were enormous, and so was the outpouring of support. As anglers and boaters, we should be proud of the response from our community.

Fly Fishing GEAR

Simms G3 Guide Stockingfoot Wader

Goat Head Spool Clips

Without sacrificing durability, Simms’ has constructed its most comfortable, best fitting and most breathable wader in the new G3 Guide Stockingfoot Wader. The G3 Guide was awarded Best Fly Fishing Accessory at ICAST 2017. Constructed with 4-layer GORE-TEX Pro Shell fabric in the legs and three-layer in the upper, this wader concentrates durability where it is needed most while providing added breathability. It takes comfort and mobility to a new level. The wader comes equipped with a chest pocket, removable flip-out Tippet Tender , hand-warmer pockets, integrated utility tabs and also features Simms’ patented front and back leg seams, gravel guards, and suspenders with opposing YKK buckles that allow for a waist-high conversion. It is available in models for men and women.

How many times have your clunky old tippet caddies gotten tangled in the bushes or hung up in slack line? Goat Head Spool Clips are an ingenious new way to carry spools of tippets more securely. Their simple and compact design keeps your spools handy yet out of the way at the same time. A single Spool Clip will hold two standard tippet spools and fits securely to most nylon straps. Spool Clips are made in the U.S.A. from 100 percent recycled plastic. They are simple, rugged, compact, versatile and always ready when you need them.

Douglas Argus Reel There is no denying the beauty and simplicity of a clickcheck reel. Without the advantage of a disc drag, the angler is more in touch with the fish and fights are more fun. The Douglas Argus Fly Reel is a fine looking click-check reel that gets you closer to the fish. It is a shared legacy between longtime anglers and the next demanding generation. On one hand, it is a beautiful reel. On the other, there is no undue advantage given to the angler. Reel includes a twilled pouch. It is made in Upstate New York out of machined bar stock 6061 aircraft aluminum with a standard arbor, and reversible click check with rim-positioned adjustment. The rim is laser textured for palming. The reel seat is constructed of marine brass.

Arc 99+ Fly Line

There is a famous quote by Wyatt Earp, “Fast is fine, but accuracy is everything.” In fly fishing, accuracy is everything. The difference between success and failure is often measured in inches. All modern fly rods are powerful, but accuracy is the new frontier in design. Making an 80-foot cast in saltwater is prospecting. Making a forty-foot cast on the nose of a laid-up tarpon is fishing. The H3 brings a fundamental shift from flex profiles to a new frontier in accuracy and purpose-driven design. Helios 3F and 3D each offer uncompromising purpose. 3F is accuracy with finesse, a dry fly angler’s dream. 3D is accuracy with power at distance for pinpoint delivery of larger flies. The difference is taper and stiffness, but the design foundation of accuracy remains constant. The H3 is the pinnacle of purpose, designed to master the moment and meet the demands of accuracy on a spring creek with a 3F or a tarpon flat with a 3D.

www.orvis.com

Designed for today’s faster action fly rods, the ARC 99+ is a half line size heavier and features a more condensed taper than standard true-to-size fly lines. This additional weight and specialized taper design loads fast action rods easier, resulting in longer, more accurate casts. Built around our 6 percent low-stretch Response Core, the ARC 99+ incorporates the latest advancements in fly line design, including transition zones, a super high floating permanent Nano PTFE coating and a low-friction, grooved line profile. We call this ZNG Technology. This makes the ARC 99+ one of the longest casting, highest floating and easiest mending fly lines on the market today. 10

O

ur grandfathers used old-school bamboo fly rods to create some of the greatest fishing stories of all time. That most of these stories took place on famous trout streams still influences what people think about bamboo’s place in fly fishing. Caleb Turner, of Turner Bamboo Fly Rods, has a different take on bamboo rods in the modern world. “Bamboo has a special place in the very heart of fly fishing, from the great western streams to the small streams of the Appalachians, but they don’t come to mind when people are talking the salt flats,” Caleb said. According to the Turners, there’s a misconception that there are no fast action bamboo fly rods, and that only the fastest action rods can be used in saltwater. Most rod makers and bamboo enthusiasts know this isn’t only untrue… it isn’t even the point.

“The feel found in bamboo rods is often confused with action for people picking up a bamboo rod for the first time,” Caleb said. “When they feel the action in the rod, they often over accelerate their forward cast causing them to lose energy in the line.” Caleb’s recommendation is to let the rod do the work, and to concentrate on technique. “It’s easier to feel when the rod is loaded with bamboo, and this really comes more into play for us on the flats than trout streams,” he said. What the Turners do differently than most other bamboo rod makers is cater to saltwater fly fishing. They are located in Mississippi right next to some of the most technical redfish flats on the Gulf Coast. “We design our saltwater fly rods with a fast action for stiff winds and quick-moving redfish that spook way more easily than their Louisiana counterparts,” Caleb said. With water the same color as the redfish, wind, and the need to have eyes of an Osprey, fly fishing the Mississippi Gulf Coast is more like bonefishing. “Bamboo gives us the action we need, the feel we need, and it’s able to load up at short distances but also extend a long cast to extremely wary redfish found around here.” Caleb said. “Tonkin cane grows in a 30-square-kilometer area in the Orient’s Sui River Valley. It is praised as the strongest species of bamboo with the greatest thickness of power fibers. These power fibers are what give bamboo rods what they have more than other material used in crafting fly rods, their touch. Despite what action you desire, bamboo rods offer a certain touch you just can’t get with anything else. If a rod is designed correctly, you can have all the action you need and still have that great feel. The rod lets you know when it’s loaded instead of having to figure out the timing for that individual rod.” In short, bamboo fly rods definitely have their place in modern performing fly rods. Accuracy, touch and presentation are things bamboo rod makers strive for in crafting their rods. If you get a hold of a quality rod, you’ll be pleasantly surprised by all the things it can do. For more information on bamboo fly rods or Turner Bamboo Fly Rods visit www.turnerflyrods.com or email caleb@turnerflyrods.com.

was a dime-bright fish of only 6 or so iK e pounds that still had the power to get j o s, Ic the reel deep into its backing. There is no better way to begin a fishing journey than when it all comes together early on. We knew we would be experiencing yet another trip of a lifetime. With the sun only slightly hitting the horizon and a brief glimpse of darkness for what seems like only minutes, the days are filled with subtle takes of the fly, followed by sips of Brennivin, cast and repeat. We ended the trip in the same fashion as it started. Another sleek salmon peels line and leaps. At the end of the run, Raven dips the net and we release the fish to bid farewell for what is hopefully only another year until we return. With Raven being the pilot, Brian, Kyle and I explored areas that have been experienced by few. Targeting trophy fish in such a landscape with close friends only solidifies the need for one to explore, be bewildered and experience life events that shape you as a person. Iceland will leave your soul fulfilled but still wanting more.

a

C

asting into a pool where fish leap and dragons rise brings emotions that cannot be found in many places. From the etched lava landscape to the clean cold water, Iceland offers anglers a backdrop to a story that will always begin with the statement, “It was the trip of a lifetime.” With three trips in three consecutive years, I can use the all-too cliché fishing phrase, “I am hooked” on Iceland. Page after page can be written about the acrobatic Atlantic salmon, the headstrong pull of a sea-run brown trout, the rocky canyons, waterfalls, and the art of fishing a hitched tube-fly. There is so much that pulls an angler to Icelandic rivers. For the past three years, I have spent the end of July fishing the Laxa i Kjos, a smaller river in southwestern Iceland about an hour from the capital city, Reykjavik. The river allows an angler to experience much of what Icelandic topography has to offer. From the large pools in the coastal beats, where an angler can’t help but stare out toward the Atlantic Ocean, to the meandering turns of the pastoral meadow sections, and deep narrow-cut canyons that carve the hillside until you reach Thorufoss, the impassable falls, home to a famous scene from the popular series “Game of Thrones.” The landscape, at least to me, is secondary to those that accompany you on the journey. On this year’s trip, I was fortunate enough to return to the river with good friends: Brian, who has made the trip with me before; Kyle, a friend who would be experiencing this fabled land for the first time; and our guide Hrafn (Raven), who brings an entire new appreciation to the fly fishing guide world with a persona that is somewhat mythical, just like the waters we were wading in. Arriving in Iceland, most anglers have aspirations of watching a tube fly skate across the surface of crystal waters, witnessing the careful eat of the fly and the line going tight with the initial run of one of the fly world’s most sought after quarry, an Atlantic salmon. We were fortunate enough to be those anglers. The first fish of the trip was caught soon after arrival. It

Howarth, along with his son Barrett, are building on a heritage of superb design and meticulous craftsmanship. Top-quality components, premium interiors and functional features all come standard on a Mag Bay. They are built to last, and can be customized to fit the owner’s needs for fishing or cruising. One look at the specs, however, will tell you she can be rigged out as a serious angling platform with an approximate range of 350 miles. With multiple hull designs, the Mag Bay 33 is available with amenities like wireless windlass, various seating and lighting options, oversized display screens, joystick, Seakeeper gyro, side door, extra large top and much more.

Since 2015, Mag Bay Yachts has been building on what is sure to become a legendary tradition of high quality sportfishing boats. The Mag Bay 33 is a center console that bridges the gap between elegance and function. An initial patented hull designed by Michael Peters Yacht Designs, of Sarasota, Fla., presents gorgeously unique lines that are sure to turn heads. A modern yet classic look is as sleek at the docks as it is slicing through the seas offshore. And built with the heart of a fishing boat, she is as at home serving as a yacht tender as she is in varied seas as a dryriding, nimble-handling tournament fishing machine. That was the idea when the co-founders of Cabo Yachts launched Mag Bay. Cabo’s Mike

onefish & Tarpon Trust’s Sixth International Science Symposium will take place Nov. 10-11 at the Bonaventure Resort and Spa in Weston, Fla. Open to anglers, scientists, conservationists and fishing industry representatives, this global gathering will also kick off BTT’s 20th Anniversary celebration. “This year’s symposium promises to be the largest and most significant in our history,” said BTT President Jim McDuffie. “We have assembled the foremost scientists in the flats world to present their latest research findings on bonefish, tarpon and permit, and explain how newly acquired knowledge will benefit the conservation of our fisheries.” In addition to presentations by leading scientists, the symposium will spotlight angling legends who will share their time-tested techniques for catching the iconic gamefish of the flats. Andy Mill, Chico Fernandez, C.A. Richardson, Steve Huff, and Rick Ruoff will be among the greats on hand to offer instruction on an indoor casting lane. New to this year’s symposium is a Flats Expo, showcasing the products and services of industry leaders, from the latest technical developments in the sport to world-renowned fishing lodges and outfitters. Fly tying and photography clinics, and an Art & Film Festival also highlight the schedule, along with a banquet honoring conservation heroes. Dinner guests will have the chance to compete for auction items, including bucket-list destination trips, fine art, top-of-the-line spin and fly-fishing gear, and a special BTT 20th Anniversary trip to fish and conduct research with BTT-affiliated scientists. As always, the role of science-based approaches to conservation will be the centerpiece of the event, featuring presentations and Q&A about the latest research on bonefish, tarpon, permit— the species, their habitats, and the larger fisheries they support— as well as panel discussions on how science is guiding BTT initiatives in Florida and across the Caribbean Basin. Of special note will be several recently concluded studies that aim to benefit the Florida fishery. “One of the best things about the symposium is that everyone is able to see how the research informs conservation, and how this helps to protect and restore flats fisheries. It really is unique to be able to participate in this process and see it at work, from start to finish,” said Dr. Aaron Adams, BTT Director of Science and Conservation. BTT’s mission statement is “To conserve and restore bonefish, tarpon and permit fisheries and habitats through research, stewardship, education and advocacy.” To obtain a media pass for the event, contact Nick Roberts: nick@bonefishtarpontrust. org. GULFSTREAM YACHTS Gulfstream Yachts is coming up on its 10-year anniversary and turning out some of the best boats it has ever built. With a dedicated focus to safety, Gulfstream designs customizable center consoles as comfortable fishing or cruising as they are unsinkable.

Gulfstream 34CC The 34CC is a hard-core fishing machine with features that make excursions comfortable and enjoyable for anyone. A unique feature of the 34CC is the large bed area inside the center console that is perfect for finding shade or shelter from the storm, and it can air-conditioned. An advanced hull with a delta pad along the rear 12 feet of the running surface and an integrated stepped transom bracket capable of handling twin or triple motors reduces drag. These features help the boat plane almost instantaneously. One, two or three livewells carry as much bait as you need, and an ergonomically designed console accommodates large electronics. Five large insulated fish/storage boxes hold ice for extended periods because of the boat’s foam-filled construction. This boat was designed for the serious tournament angler or the weekend warrior, and it can be tailored to the owner’s preferences. Length 34’0” Airline_Ad_CoastalAngler_8-1-14_Layout 1 8/1/14 1:14 PM Page 1 Beam 9’11”

Draft 28” Fuel 300 Gal. (400 Gal. option) Dry Weight 7,000 Pounds Recommended Power: 600-1050 HP (twins or triples)

Gulfstream 52 In its 52, Gulfstream introduces what is perhaps the most unique center console ever built. It is a hard-core fishing and diving boat offering unsurpassed comfort with an air-conditioned helm and passenger seating area that can serve as a second bedroom. The large cockpit and forward sunpad offer ample outdoor space, and the enclosure can be converted to open-air. Other key elements of the 52’s design are high gunnel walls and generous passageways for easy access to all areas of the boat. Gulfstream collaborated with Setzer Yacht Architects and Michael Peters Yacht Design using their patented Stepped “V” Ventilated Tunnel hull to give this vessel the feature set of a larger yacht. It’s a great standalone boat and the ultimate multipurpose yacht tender with a customizable layout to suit the owner’s needs for fishing or cruising. An air pump provides additional control, allowing the system to be customized based on the weight of the person sitting in the chair. When you’re ready to experience the most comfortable, smoothest riding helm chair available, check out the Game Changer. OAA Fisheries is offering an online option to register Atlantic highly migratory species (HMS) tournaments and report HMS tournament catch on the new Atlantic Tournament Registry and Reporting (ATR) System. Atlantic HMS tournament registration and reporting is important for the management of swordfish, billfishes, tunas and sharks because it characterizes a portion of the recreational fishing effort on these species, including general location and targeted species, and provides catch and landings data that are used for stock assessments and monitoring of landings under international requirements. The ATR System allows electronic registration and reporting and e-mails confirmation that NOAA Fisheries has reviewed the registration application, or reporting information and determined that the entry is complete. Online registration provides an additional, easy option for tournament registration and reporting along with the existing options of mailing, e-mailing and faxing. For more information about Atlantic HMS tournament registration and reporting, go to http://www.nmfs.noaa.gov/sfa/hms/compliance/tournaments/index.html.

f you are reading this, you can officially say that you survived Hurricane Irma. The mere size of this hurricane affected the entire state and left many of us scrambling for supplies that were already depleted because we sent most of our stock to the people of Southeast Texas after they were devastated by Harvey a few weeks earlier. For days, we all watched the news for the latest forecast and it looked like we were about to be kicked in the teeth by the mother of all hurricanes. As it turns out, we were simply inconvenienced by power outages, long lines for gasoline, downed trees and a lack of ice and drinking water. As we were spared major damage, the Lower and Middle Keys took the brunt of Irma and the post storm images are not pretty. Many long time Keys residents and businesses have lost everything that they had. Those that didn’t lose everything are facing months, if not years, of rebuilding. The Keys will survive. That’s what Conchs do. However, those of us just to the north need to do whatever we can to help the folks of the Florida Keys recover and rebuild. I encourage you to find a way to donate to the relief efforts in the Keys and other hard hit areas. If you can’t afford to make a monetary donation, there are plenty of ways that you can donate your time. Please do what you can to help. Keep reelin,

Southeast Coating and Fabrication

BUILT IN BROWARD O

wned and operated by local residents, Paul and Wendy Riccio, Southeast Coating and Fabrication is a full service metal fabrication, machine and powder coat facility located in Pompano Beach. Nearly twenty years ago, Paul started out as a performance auto parts reseller which eventually led to his own private label product line that he outsourced to other manufacturers. As his product line grew, he saw the need for better quality control and slowly brought manufacturing in house. As an avid boater and motorcyclist, Paul has been able to forge many friendships and establish solid business relationships in Broward county. Over the years, he would get phone calls asking if he could weld this or do you think you could powder coat something for me and even can you help me manufacture a product that I have an idea for? As time passed, those phone calls became more frequent and presented an opportunity to expand. The decision was made to increase the shop size, add staff and acquire more equipment to better serve the community. With the finest equipment in the industry such as a Hurco VM20i Vertical CNC mill, Hurco TM8i CNC lathe, Ercolina CNC tube bender and tube roller along with a Viper CNC plasma table capable of cutting up to four foot by ten foot sheets of one inch thick solid steel, their

capabilities are endless. They also have the latest in powder coating equipment from Gema and Colmet and their welding department has the latest MIG and TIG machines from Miller Industries. Bridgeports, iron worker, punch press and sheer, cold saws and band saws round out the space on the shop floor. According to Paul, the heart and soul of the operation are his employees. Shop Foreman Robert started his career as a welder in the United States Air Force in 1983 where he earned numerous accolades and certifications. Robert’s skill set, attention to detail and knowledge of materials insures every job is completed with the highest of standards. With 16 years of experience, Joe Bryant heads the powder coat division. His knowledge of materials, primers, top coats and pre treatments is vital to a beautifully finished piece. As a talented welder, fabricator and hands on guy, Joe often jumps over to the fabrication side of things and can run every piece of equipment in the shop. George Neal is the lead machinist and brings thirty two years of experience to the table. With so many years in the industry, George can take the most complicated project from conception to completion seamlessly, professionally and on time every time. Today, Southeast Coating and Fabrication is South Florida’s premier metal fabrication and powder coating facility and can handle small or large welding jobs, metal fabrication, machining of a single part to hundreds of parts and can powder coat anything metal. From boat parts to patio furniture, Paul and his team can get you hooked up. Stop by or give them a call to learn more and be sure to tell them that Coastal Angler sent you.

ailfish season is here and it's starting off with a bang! The sailfish this season are biting voraciously. Already we're catching numbers that we usually don't see until the middle of winter. Kite fishing on the blue/ green color change, just a mile offshore, is all but a sure thing for sailfish. This is a great time of year for big game action, with just about every trip catching one or more sailfish 6-8 ft in length. Sailfish are the most sought after gamefish in the ocean, and people come from all around the world to take place in the great sailfishing that we have off the Fort Lauderdale coast. These sailfish migrate in a stretch of water, between 100250 ft deep, that we call sailfish alley. Pop the kites in this zone with some lively goggle eyes and get ready for action. Kite fishing is a method of live baiting by suspending your baits from kites, keeping them suspended

DRIFT

fISHING

O

ctober is a great month for drift fishing in Fort Lauderdale, especially for kingfish. The kingfish bite gets really good this month as the waters finally begin to cool off. The best kingfish bite tends to be early morning or late in the afternoon. One hot tip is to throw out a surface trolling bait on the way out to fishing grounds. It's not drift fishing, but the boat is traveling over all that fishable area to get to their spot, so you may as well throw out a rigged ballyhoo or strip bait. The captain will slow down if you get a hook up. For drifting, a dead ballyhoo or sardine works well. A whip jig baited with ballyhoo can get a good bite on a kingfish, wahoo or blackfin tuna. October is a good month for wahoo and blackfin tuna. Cobia, a fish we don't catch that often out here will also begin showing up this month. Cobia average 30-40 pounds, some 4 FORT LAUDERDALE AREA

directly on the top of the water struggling, making fish in distress vibrations. It's a very effective way to catch sailfish and other top water gamefish. When you are kite fishing, you can also

bigger, and are a great eating fish, making them highly prized. Cobia often suddenly swim right up to the boat and get caught by the fastest angler ready to pitch a bait to him. The first few schools of cobia come through this month, so be ready. At night, the reef comes alive with snappers. Yellowtail, mangrove, lane, schoolmaster, dog tooth, mahogany and mutton snappers are abundant this month and come out of the woodwork to feed once it gets dark. Most of them being 1-2 pounds in weight, anchor fishing and chumming the water is best method to target these pan-sized bottom fish. Squid and ballyhoo chunks work good fishing heavy on the bottom, or use silversides with an extra light sinker to drift your bait back in the chum-line for yellowtail. Mutton snapper, the biggest of all the snappers we catch can get 10-14 pounds, a few of them being caught every night on the bottom. A variety of red/black grouper, cobia and sharks are also caught frequently on the night anchor trips. OCTOBER 2017

catch tuna, dolphin, kingfish and big game sharks. All of these species are biting this month and can be caught out there. Wreck fishing, a technique of fishing where we drop live or

dead baits to the bottom next to a shipwreck, also makes for good action this time of year. Warsaw grouper, one of the biggest groupers we catch in Ft Lauderdale, are stacking up and making home around shipwrecks and bottom structures. Warsaw groupers average upwards of 50 pounds, much larger than most groupers average. Black grouper, amberjack and cobia are other bottom fish that you may catch wreck fishing in October. Just a little further offshore, shark fishing can be good this month for some of the most exotic sharks we catch out here, thresher and mako sharks. Last year, we caught 2 of our biggest thresher sharks I have ever seen in October. There's a great variety of fish to be caught this month, some of our biggest fish all year. I love sailfish season! Tight lines and good fishing.

With barely any boats out there harassing the fish after Hurricane Irma, the fishing is getting really good. The fish are biting like mad. Lots of snappers, a few kingfish around and this lucky lady angler caught a cobia!

There's a good variety of fish to be caught this month drift fishing off Fort Lauderdale. Good luck to everyone fishing. I'll sea ya on the water!

Reel Therapy A

fter a week and a half of dealing with the hype, approach and aftermath of Hurricane Irma, all I wanted to do was go fishing. Forget the fact that I needed editorial to fill the pages of the October issue. Getting out on the deep blue sea was all that was going to heal what ailed me. Most of my friends were still dealing with no power and couldn’t get away to help me get rid of the worst case of cabin fever that I’ve ever had. I made one last phone call to my friend Ryan Palmer in hopes that he might get me out for a day of deep dropping aboard his 25 foot contender. He shared with me that there was an issue with his motor and it would not be happening aboard the Family Jewel. There was however, with all clouds, a silver lining. He was planning to head out the next day with a friend of his and told me that he would ask if I could tag along. A few minutes later, he called me back with the news that I could go and that they would pick me up at the Lighthouse Point Marina. I was so excited that it took forever to fall asleep and woke up before the alarm went off. Arriving at the marina, it seemed like a ghost town as the power had not yet been restored. The only other soul there was the live bait guy. We chatted briefly, but sadly I don’t remember

his name. Shortly after 7am, Bustin Loose, a 31 foot Contender captained by Randy Stark arrived to pick me up. Randy hopped off the boat in bare feet and greeted me with a big smile and hand shake. I knew right away that I was in good company and was going to have fun, no matter what. We grabbed three dozen pilchards from the bait guy and I hopped aboard. We had to run back south to the Sands fuel dock to get fuel and load up on ice so we didn’t make the inlet until around 8am. The plan was to run offshore in search of some magical debris left over from Irma, but after reaching 800 feet in four to six foot slop, we hadn’t found anything. About three miles from good deep drop numbers, Capt. Randy made the call to put out a few jet heads and we would troll to the spot. Almost immediately we hooked up with a few mini football blackfin tunas and the stink was off the boat. Once we reached the spot, we reeled up the jet heads and set up the electric reel for some deep dropping. The first drop produced two of the biggest black belly rosefish I’ve ever seen. As the bite was clearly on, Ryan set up a second electric reel up on the bow and we threw a single free lined pilchard out on a 20 pound spinning outfit in hopes of a big bull dolphin crashing the party. Over the next few hours, we

loaded the boat with black bellies and picked off a tiny dolphin that we released. We were indeed having fun and the thoughts of the Irma experience had vacated our minds. We then ran back in towards the inlet and decided to put out a few planers with the intention of finding a wahoo or smoker king to complete the day. Greeted by numerous frigate birds and two chinook helicopters returning from relief efforts in the Florida Keys, we were giddy with excitement, but we never got the wahoo or big kingfish bite we were looking for. It didn’t matter as we were all happy just to be out on the water doing what we love to do. We did manage to pick off a few snake sized kingfish and several bonito to put a little more blood on the deck and a few more smiles on our faces. Reaching the dock, we were all thankful to have had the opportunity to look back on the day and know that Irma did not get the best of us. Thank you to Capt. Randy Stark, Austin Copeland and Ryan Palmer for some seriously needed reel therapy.

he end of summer is when freshwater is nearing its pinnacle temperatures in South Florida. Sustaining into fall and often times, well into our winters or lack of. Peacock bass thrive and may spawn year round if water temperatures are ideal. Many cichlids do, overlapping cycles and feeding off each other's offspring. Along with the usual suspects of predator species, waiting for their moment in the pecking order, usually defined by speed or size. It's a common misconception by inexperienced fisherman, referring to just spring or summer time as the peacock season. A tropical species, spring to summer is when they can be typically found spawning and at their most vulnerable. The pair fast during this entire time, once eggs are laid or fry are visible, they constantly battle off other small cichlids, fishermen and various sunfish. Left alone, for the short spawn cycle of ten to fourteen days. The peacock fry would have a much higher chance to survive

ith summer officially over, anglers now get a taste of some excellent fall fishing. Fishermen are still catching the occasional wahoo, but they are few and far between. If you still want to target them, your best bet is to head out on an early morning outgoing tide and fish over the deep wrecks from 180-250 feet of water. This past summer had one of the best wahoo runs I’ve ever seen since moving to Pompano Beach from South Jersey. The last Extreme Kayak Fishing Tournament had a 71lb Wahoo win the event. The mahi mahi bite in October is usually very solid. For kayak anglers, you don’t have to paddle that far like in the summer to catch these beauties. I have already been getting reports of nice 1520lb dolphin being caught from 200-250 feet of water and even 8 FORT LAUDERDALE AREA

and procreate. With responsible angling, trophy peacocks in South Florida may average double digits one day. Several freshwater world record species recognized by the International Game Fish Association are actually from South Florida. The bullseye snakehead and popoca peacock are just two. Fall is also hurricane season and keeping a close eye on the barometric pressure can be very rewarding. Time it right and get on a feeding frenzy as fish tend to binge eat prior to a big storm, fast

during and binge eat again once the weather has subsided. Just before Hurricane Irma, the bite was definitely on and largemouth bass and peacocks were already fat, thick and more importantly, aggressive. Making notes in a journal in general is a good idea, especially during natural disasters. The post bite was slow, picking up after several days of runoff and various pollutants in the waters were diluted or evaporated. Key things to look for are minnows and various small baitfish, which tend

some nice mahi being caught shallow with a nice east wind. A tip for catching dolphin in October is to look for the big drift boats. I’ve caught some nice sized dolphin around those boats due to the fact that they put out lots of baits and chum in the water and the fish will be just far enough to where a kayak angler can pick them off. Sailfish season is about to be in full effect. Usually, October will bring South Florida’s first cold front and with it a great sailfish bite. There have already been some nice sails caught in 80-120 feet of water. When targeting sailfish, I like to go stealthy. Use 30-40lb mono leader with a 3/0 circle hook and a nice juicy gog. The kingfish bite has still been solid with the occasional 30 pounder being caught around 80 feet of water, although most catches have been between 10 and 20 pounds. Many have been caught right out front of Hillsboro Inlet on an outgoing tide. If there is one thing South

Florida Fishing in October is known for, it’s catching big mutton snappers at night around the October moon. October means good numbers of mutton snapper on reefs and wrecks in 50-120 feet of water. There are even reports of muttons being caught surf fishing from the beach at night between the Pompano Pier and 16th street. For kayak anglers looking to target them, make sure you have at least 2 lights on your kayak and all of your safety equipment while fishing at sun down. The great part is you do not have to go too far to catch them. Kayak anglers can also get some nice mangrove snapper while fishing for the muttons. When rigging for muttons, make sure you have at 15 to 30 feet of 40-50lb fluorocarbon leader. Use an egg sinker and strong 4/0-5/0 circle hook. It’s best to work your drift at night dragging on sandy bottom between Pompano Pier and Hillsboro Inlet, right outside the swim buoys during the moon. The 2018 Extreme Kayak

to be much more sensitive to poor waters or bad coverage for them. If you don't see bait activity and clean waters, keep moving. Once you've developed a solid pattern, combined with old notes and past experience. You will start to unlock some of the many secrets hidden throughout the Magic City. Big or small, in almost any weather at all. You can always find something to catch in South Florida. As the state rebuilds post Irma, Miami-Dade and several counties are already back online and eager to show you why we still live here, the things we love in the great outdoors and all the people that make this industry the "Fishing Capital of the World". Visit my website or social links to learn more, to book your exotic trip today and help support our recovery. I have contacts and networks from freshwater bass charters, peacock guides and charters. And to some of South Florida's top and reputable captains, from inshore flats, bay and blue waters.

s an angler and a conservationist, I've noticed a lot of changes on Lake Okeechobee. In my opinion, too much of the cattails, reeds and all the essential grasses and vegetation needed to clean the water and have a healthy fishery are being killed off. In the Everglades, water has been super high for the entire summer. So high that animals have been displaced, having to swim to look for dry land. Not good. I hope mother nature will correct what man messes up soon. So here's what I've been doing to catch fish. Best times have been night time and early in the morning. Top water such as hollow belly frogs, spooks, chuggers all will get your arm broken starting first light and avoiding the heat. Swim Jigs are also a great search bait. #1 - Lake Okeechobee: Even with the above being said...fish are hitting on the outside edge. I recently found some of my better fish to be back a bit. The best search baits have been swim jigs with a dipper or craw on them. Chatter baits, Spinner baits, Rattle

Sadys Mujica and Luke Ford with a double catch of peacock bass.

trap, Big easy, Easy swimmer, have been catching their share of fish. Some of the bigger fish have come from slowing the retrieve way down. Pitching big jigs with your favorite baits are getting crushed. I also like a naked bait, meaning no skirt. Gambler Baits - Why Not & Flappin Daddy, ugly otter, are just a few. #2 - Mile Marker 35 or 41: Fishing here is really good right now. Swim big worms through the pads for the chance of getting

your presentation out of the grass-line into the deeper water. All the baits and techniques will work here. Try top water spooks, poppers, worming the bottom, jerk baits and swim baits. #5 - Holiday Park: The water has been up all summer and fishing has not been great. However, it still remains one the Florida Everglades leading bodies of water. All the techniques above will work in the park. My favorite Swim big worms through the pads for the chance of getting a monster fish. Also the swim jig. I like to throw it in the thickest pads and swim it out. The big fish are in the shade under the pads. I like to flip a sinko in the pads and let it sink. The best time is early in the morning hours & dusk. I have caught a few peacocks recently in the Glades. Remember if you don't have a boat you can rent one at Everglades Holiday Park. DON'T FORGET THE URBAN CANALS THEY ARE FULL OF FISH AND DON'T GET THE PRESSURE! As always, if you’re not going to eat the fish please handle them with care and return them gently back to the water. If you see line that has not been disposed of properly, please pick it up. It's up to us fishermen and women to preserve our sport for years to come. Stay safe out there. Till next time...Fish On!

a monster fish.Try EZ Swimmer, burner worms & Aces fished wacky or Texas rigged. Flukes, horny toads, flappin' shad and worming the bottom. I like the points as well as dragging a jig. Flip them there and you will have some good success. Make sure you go really slow around the weirs. #3 - Sawgrass: More of the same, bass and more bass. I like to use small plastics here. 5 inch Aces are working great. Water Management has been moving water around in this area. In addition to all the run off from the rain, it has muddied up the water. Here's the rule - dark or dirty water dark colors like black Capt. Neal Stark & June bug. Also, flake in the (954) 822-1481 worms is great when water is dirty. Fishing with America’s Finest, Inc. he 2017 Progressive Insurance Tampa Boat Show, the area’s only in-water boat show, returns Oct. 13-15 to showcase the marine industry’s newest boats and accessories and provide aquatic activities for all ages. Visitors to the Bay Area’s largest boat show can view, board and enjoy one-of-a-kind deals on hundreds of boats, including fishing boats, sailboats and premier yachts from the region’s top dealers. The Progressive Insurance Tampa Boat Show continues to showcase the latest innovations and trends to the Tampa market,” said Kevin Murphy, show manager. “We’re bringing the best of boating to Tampa, with interactive boating simulators, sailboats and mega yachts and more. “Visitors to this show will be among the first in the world to see many of these boats. Whether you’re in the market for a luxury cruiser or exploring ways to get on the water, our expanded in-water display will showcase more than 100 best-in-class vessels, ranging in size from 30 to 80 feet.” The three-day show provides activities for anyone interested in the boating lifestyle, from avid anglers to novice boaters, and families to retirees. A new feature is the Boater Pass, which not only helps attendees collect information on their favorite vessels and exhibitors, but also gives them a chance to win a 2018 Yamaha EX Deluxe Waverunner. “The boat show has a wide range of activities to entertain and educate people of all ages and experience levels,” said Murphy. “But, for our fishermen, we’ve gone all out. Want to hook a redfish or learn DIY maintenance? You can’t miss this show.” Attendees can hone their boating skills with on-the-water workshops through the Discover Boating’s Hands-On Skills Training

PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT ICEMULE PRO XL Seeing the need for a portable cooler that is actually a real cooler and holds real ice, ICEMULE founder James Collie set out on a mission to change the way the world views coolers. The result is the world’s coldest, most portable and toughest hands-free soft cooler. It can be worn like a backpack. The ICEMULE Pro XL is a high-capacity 33-liter cooler that keeps ice better than many hard coolers. They retain solid ice for more than 24 hours, and the Pro XL is large enough to hold 24 cans and ice. That’s a lot of space to carry provisions for your next adventure comfortably on your back. ICEMULEs are built of the highest-quality materials and fasteners. Their proprietary MuleSkin fabrics are extra tough to stand up to the most punishing conditions. There are no seams; welded construction ensures the Pro XL is completely waterproof. And the cooler’s roll-top, which works like a dry bag, is air-tight and allows easy access without jamming zippers. With padded backpack straps, ventilated back pads and a sternum strap, weight distribution is optimized to comfortably carry a heavy load. Whether it’s a hike into the backcountry or a long walk down to the beach, you’ll be glad your cooler is an ICEMULE.

FRESHWATER

By Jerrod Vila

O

h, the fall. It brings us colorful foliage, football, fresh apple cider and big ornery brown trout. When the mercury begins to take the plunge and daylight starts to dwindle, big mature brown trout start their yearly routine of procreation. What follows is a feeding binge of mature trout. Fish that have been uncatchable all summer throw caution to the wind. This is not the time for small flies and delicate presentations. Big gaudy nymphs and large streamers are the name of the game in fall. Large stonefly patterns like Girdle Bugs and Pat’s Rubber Legs are good choices as are the usual generic mayfly patterns like Hare’s Ears and Pheasant Tails, just opt for

a size 8 instead of an 18. My personal favorite fall flies are streamers, and something with a little bit of color, too. For some reason big fall browns seem to like streamers with a bit of orange in them. Sculpin patterns can be especially deadly this time of year. Whether it be the giant protein-packed snack a big sculpin delivers or a triggered attack response implanted in trout to protect their roe, it should be used to your advantage. It is also the time for stealth. With overly large trout sometimes holding in ridiculously shallow water, being sneaky pays huge dividends. Wear drab colored shirts at the very least. Even a camouflage jacket is not too far fetched. I normally work a river upstream, but this is not the case when fishing fall streamers. I’ll work it down. I can be much quieter and more stealthy when walking with the current as opposed to against it. If possible, stay on the bank as much as you can. Most fish will hit on the swing, so the area you expect the take to come will be downstream of your location. If you were working upstream, you could have already spooked a fish. Cast across, swing it down, take a few sneaky steps down stream, think about it, cast across, swing it down. Walking the river is crucial. Don’t just haphazardly crash through the water on your way to a good run. Hunt the river this time of year. Take a few steps and watch. This is where a good pair of polarized glasses are worth their weight in gold. Look over the entire stream, not just the typical haunts. You may be pleasantly surprised and amazed by what you’ll see. Trout will still be positioned in good usual runs too, but much more apt to attack your offering. Instead of heading to the deer stand or taking up a spot on the couch to watch the big game, get out on the stream. Just maybe, a kyped-up, big old slab of spotted butter will end up in your net. Jerrod Vila is a simple guy from Upstate New York with a passion for fly fishing, cooking and predator hunting. T

he dry brisk November morning air is a welcome change to Florida’s Forgotten Coast residents, but not just for the obvious reasons. The summer heat has lifted, and the mighty red drum is hungry and looking to fill her belly with whatever kind of crustacean or finny fish she can get close to. As you move stealthily along the marsh, you search for the signs: a wake along the grass line or a tail piercing the water’s surface. Either one is worthy of a cast and, if presented properly,

can result in the silence of the morning stalk being broken by the crash of a topwater plug being engulfed, the scream of a reel’s drag and some enthusiastic expletives. Stalking the skinnies of the marsh can be a challenging experience. Reds spook easily, so stealth is a must, as are accurate and purposeful casts; all this is what makes the hunt so rewarding. The waters of Franklin County are teeming with reds, making the chance of fooling, fighting and releasing a mighty red an extremely attainable and rewarding experience. If you come to this area to chase reds, any shallow-drafting boat will put you in a position for success, but some are better suited than others. Ideally, the ability to pole, paddle or scull your vessel will give you the advantage of stealth, but a trolling motor and a well-planned use of tides and wind also works well on the flats. Franklin County TDC is giving away a free red fishing excursion this month, so enter for your chance to win and make your redfish dream a reality. The reds and so many other fish are abundant in some of the most beautiful places on earth, right here. Don’t let another fall go by without experiencing this amazing time of year along Florida’s Forgotten Coast. For more details or to sign up, go to: www. floridasforgottencoast.com. Randy Cnota is co-publisher of the Panama City/Forgotten Coast edition of Coastal Angler Magazine.

EXPERT ADVICE

See the Fish

DAVID MANEY, FOWLER’S SUNGLASSES

W

alking a shallow trout stream, casting to structure in lakes or making sure you’re going after the biggest fish in an offshore school you need functional high performance UV sunglasses to see beneath the water. One pair may not fit the function for each of these varied UV demands. Shallow streams with bright sunlight require amber for most people. Deeper murky waters and overcast conditions need grey or amber. For offshore with bright sun and the need to see deeper into the blue waters, your best bet is blue mirror or grey. As an avid angler and someone who’s been involved in the sunglasses industry for over 20 years, my advice is to always try to match the sunglasses to the condition. This requires keeping several different UV’s with you. Most sunglass cases come with clip-on attachments so keeping a few pair of sunglasses with you has never been easier. As the conditions change during your day, you’ll be prepared to match your UV formula with the change. Once you’ve prepared yourself for these UV changes you’ll be on top of your angling game no matter what.

For the best overall coverage in any condition I recommend one pair of blue mirror/grey and one pair of green mirror/ amber. This simple modification in your sight fishing tactics will make a huge difference in your angling success. Tight Lines, David Maney Fowler’s Pharmacy 888-340-9021 www.FowlersSunglasses.com

FLY FISHING

D

uring the fall and winter, there is not a better saltwater game fish to target with a fly rod than redfish. Plentiful throughout the Gulf States, the redfish provides a great fly fishing opportunity for anglers of all skill levels who want to sight fish in shallow clear water. I’ve always considered the redfish to be the perfect saltwater game fish. It offers the angler a perfect venue to hone his or her sightfishing skills. Why? Because of two important factors: accessibility and plentiful fishing opportunity. From a logistical standpoint, most anglers can book a flight for great redfish destinations from most major cities in the U.S. Texas, Louisiana, Alabama and the panhandle of Florida are prime winter redfish spots. Each of these locations has experienced fly fishing guides who are knowledgeable and professional. Access to the marsh flats, where the redfish live in the winter, is quite easy and the number of redfish you see in a day can be mind blowing! Three factors for successful sight fishing to Redfish: 1) Can you see the fish? Visibility is the most important factor when sight fishing in shallow water. It’s great when you have a bluebird day and you’re seeing the fish from 100 yards away. However, Mother Nature usually has her own ideas on conditions. So, being able to identify fish even in tough lighting is important. Look for odd shapes in the water, V shaped wakes or even a subtle dimple that breaks the water’s surface. These are all signs of redfish feeding in an area. TIP: Use yellow polarized lenses. These will provide better contrast under tough lighting conditions. 2. Can I make a short cast? Many redfish are hooked 20 feet or less from the boat. Believe

me, the short cast is the toughest cast to make when sight fishing to redfish. Why? Because we are so focused on perfecting the 60-foot cast and neglect the importance of dropping a cast less than 20 feet from the boat. The 60foot cast is important, but it rarely comes into play when sight fishing to redfish. Work on your short cast as well. TIP: Work on a flip cast. Only cast the head of your fly line at targets on your left and right sides at 10 to 20 feet max. 3) Where should I place the fly? Redfish can see very well. I’ve seen them chase a fly from 20 feet way. However, I find placing a fly a couple feet in front of their noses works best. Once you’ve made the cast, let the fly settle to the bottom. As the redfish moves toward the fly, begin to move the fly with short strips. Once the redfish sees the fly, it will swim over and inhale it. At this point all you have to do is keep the rod tip on the water and strip strike to set the hook. TIP: On an open lawn, place small Frisbees at 5, 10, 20 and 30 feet from your casting position. Work on placing the fly in the center of each Frisbee without a false cast.

n May, Minnesota angler Jake Robinson tied his own catch-and-release state record with a 49-inch flathead catfish from the Minnesota River. Mark Mosby, of St. Anthony, Minn., had apparently seen enough of that mess. In August, he went out on the St. Croix River and hauled in a massive flathead that measured 52 ½ inches in length and 32 inches in girth. Minnesota DNR recently announced that it is the new state record for the catch-and-release category. Actually, Mosby describes himself as an occasional angler. His buddy John Kaiser is the bigcat hunter. Kaiser was the one responsible for $3 million of our recently renovated rigging Mosby up with an 80-pound braid of Mexico.
