hile mystic grouper can be caught year-round in the Bahamas, the winter months are our favorite time of year. Whenever a weather window presents itself, we point our bow east across the Florida Straights in search of these deep-water bottom dwellers. Mystics are one of the lesser-known grouper species, simply because anglers don’t fish deep enough to target them. Like all grouper, they are excellent to eat and usually weigh from 15 to 50 pounds, although they can grow much larger. It takes special gear to fish the 800- to 1,200-foot depths where we find mystics. Armed with Shimano Tiagra 80 WAs and Shimano Tiagra 50 WAs equipped with Hooker Electric Autostop drives, we string up 65- to 100-pound Power Pro braid on Crafty One Custom’s Deep Drop Rods. We begin by paying close attention to our Humminbird Solix sonar with CHIRP HD digital technology to locate bottom structure. We look for cones, holes, drop-offs, ledges and deep-water ridges. Once viable structure is located, we position the boat above it with engines out of gear to judge how wind and current will manipulate our drift. Then the
boat is repositioned up-current from the structure and the deep-drop rigs are readied. When targeting mystics, we use our www.ThreeBuoysFishing.com grouper deep-drop rigs made with three 8/0 VMC 3x Circle Hooks on 100-pound branch lines off of 12 feet of 150-pound main line. For bait, we prefer fresh-cut 8-inch strips of dolphin, tuna, wahoo or barracuda. Many deep-drop anglers claim, “no light, no bite,” but our experience has proven that, especially with mystics, we catch more and bigger fish without lights. We deploy two rods on opposite sides of the boat. Lead weights in the 10-pound range are the rule of thumb, but weight can be adjusted to the current. After the weights hit bottom, the reels are left in freespool to lay the rigs straight down on the bottom. The engines should be used to decrease the boat’s drift to a standstill, if possible. If the boat drifts, let out line to keep the rigs on bottom. When the rod tip bumps and shakes, resist the urge to lock up the drag and retrieve line. Wait a minute or two for additional fish to sense the commotion. They’ll often eat the remaining baits. When it’s time to strike, lift the reel’s drag to strike (pre-set to 20 pounds of drag) and slowly start your retrieve. Big mystic grouper put up quite a fight at first, and you might even think you’ve hung bottom. Be patient and slowly gain as must line as possible. When fish are about halfway up, their air bladders expand and create lift. They will begin to float your rig up to the surface. For more tips and tactics on deep-dropping and the tackle and rigs to get tight, see www.threebuoysfishing.com. Finding bait becomes more important than at any other time of year. Goebel likes to get out well before dawn in search of shad or herring flickering near the surface, especially when a big moon keeps baitfish active all night. Diving birds are also a dead giveaway. They are likely feeding on baitfish pushed by stripers from below. “A lot of times if there’s bait there, I won’t even worry about marking fish on the graph,” Goebel said. “I’ll just put out my lines and start fishing where the bait is.”
By Nick Carter
T
here aren’t many anglers willing to endure the frigid early morning temperatures of winter on a large reservoir. But for those who can handle a little discomfort, right now is the best time of year to hook up with the striper of a lifetime. Around the Southeast, in reservoirs where striped bass were introduced, falling water temperatures spur changes in behavior that make the largest fish in the lake susceptible to anglers. Those 30- to 50-pounders are feeding up right now. They’re storing up reserves that will take them through the spring spawn. “It’s trophy striper season,” said Shane Goebel, of Big Ol’ Fish Guiding Service. “The bigger fish are participating a little better. This time of year, we start going after those big ol’ hogs that are chasing the big baits.” The large summer schools broke up months ago. Stripers are spread out and on the move, following baitfish into the creek mouths and up into the backs of the creeks. Big fish move shallow when water temps hit the mid to low 50s on the lakes Goebel guides in the mountains of north Georgia and western North Carolina. It might take some searching to find them, but the rewards can be huge.
Because the stripers are continually moving with the bait, covering water is crucial. Goebel said to troll as many baits in as wide a spread as you can handle. Herring are great on lakes where they are present, but this time of year you should also work some big gizzard shad or trout into the spread. Sometimes it takes a big mouthful to convince big fish to eat. Goebel runs baits 30 to 40 feet behind planer boards. He’ll drop freelines 100 to 150 feet behind the boat. If the area where he finds bait isn’t too shallow, he’ll put a little bit of weight ahead of the baits on the inside boards to cover more water vertically. He slow trolls at about half a mile per hour. This is a pattern Goebel fishes all the way into May, when stripers have moved into a pre-spawn phase. It might not produce the numbers of fish that downlining into summer mega-schools will, but the fish are generally a lot bigger than those 5- to 10-pound summer schoolies. If catching an enormous striper sounds like fun, zip up your parka and get out on the lake. It’s trophy striper season. Check out Big Ol’ Fish Guiding Service at bigolfish.com.

f Costa Rica isn’t already on your bucket list, it should be. Famous for both inshore and offshore fishing, it’s also a country with incredible biodiversity and exciting eco-tourism opportunities. In short, there’s something for every sportsman and adventure seeker here. From a fishing perspective, the west coast of this Central American country is most favored with several significant cities and ports including Jaco, Quepos and, of course, Golfito. It’s Los Suenos, however, where
my wife, Felicia and I found outstanding action on a trip last April. We worked the inshore grounds, catching huge roosterfish, rainbow runners, grouper, jacks and even mahi. We also decked a big cubera snapper. Of course, we did have an edge. Coastal Angler’s very own Costa Rica inshore reporter Capt. Carlos Arguedas and his first-mate son, Christopher, were our charter crew. “This really is a terrific place to fish,” said Arguedas, “We have access to a lot of different spots ranging from very close to the marina to 50 miles away. The roosterfish action is unbelievable here but we also catch big cubera snapper, amberjack, groupers and huge red snappers, too.” Arguedas loves to take clients for roosterfish because they fight so hard, are found close to port, and grow big. He’s had a 90-pounder grace his deck. For these, he’ll slow troll live baits like blue runners, herring, sardines or bonita. All of these baits, impaled on size 8 circle hooks, also attract other large predators; so you never know what to expect when the rod doubles over. “Roosterfish are very impressive when you first see them,” said Arguedas. “They are exotic-looking with big dorsal rays, a huge mouth and striped flanks. They are stunning to see for the first time. They are also exceptionally strong. Fight a 20-pounder and you’ll think you have a 40-pounder at the end of the line. They jump, too, and shake their head, so remember to lower your rod tip when that fish comes up or you’ll tear the hook free.” Among the other big fish that hit the deck for Arguedas’ crew on a regular basis are goliath grouper that can top 400 pounds. These are targeted around local reefs. If you want to run offshore, sailfish, tuna and marlin abound within 10 miles of port. Dorado, sometimes topping 30 pounds, can be tempted within sight of the coast. Costa Rica’s tropical climate makes it a year-round destination. Most travelers prefer to visit during the dry season, which runs from December through April, but you’ll find lighter crowds and lower travel prices during the “green” or rainy season from May to November. Whenever you visit, it really helps to work with a travel pro that deals frequently with Costa Rica to customize a trip here. Blue Water Sportfishing Charters (http://bluewatersportfishingcharters.com) specializes in setting up trips to Los Suenos. They can put you in the right place at the right time for the fish you want to catch, sights you want to see or adventures you want to experience. They’ll also book you with Capt. Carlos—or you can contact him yourself at www.wingmancr.com.

he first time I saw someone spearfishing, I was intrigued and wondered out loud how hard it would be to load a speargun. A friend heard me and said, “I’m sure you can do it. It’s probably more about technique than brute strength.” He was right. It’s not uncommon to struggle to load your first speargun, and you might suspect they made the bands too short. If you give it some time and use the right technique, it will become easy. First, some safety tips: 1) Never load a speargun out of the water. 2) Keep the safety on until you intend to shoot a fish. 3) Even with the safety on, treat it like a loaded weapon, never let the tip point at anyone. 4) Use tip protectors when not in use, so you don’t scratch anything. Some spearguns are loaded by resting the butt of the gun on your hip and pulling the bands toward the shaft notches. Others are loaded by resting the butt high on the middle of the chest and pulling the bands toward your sternum. Hip-loading spearguns are commonly used by scuba divers, as chest loading can be difficult when wearing a buoyancy compensator vest. Freedivers are less constricted by gear, so they normally use chest-loading spearguns. These have longer range because the shaft tabs sit closer to the butt of the gun. Now, some loading tips: 1) Wear gloves and wetsuit to prevent slips, scrapes or bruising. Some wetsuits have a loading pad built into the chest. 2) Don’t look down and hunch over when loading the bands. Push forward with your chest and pull the band swiftly with your arms, so the shaft tabs are pushed forward to meet the incoming
band. 3) Use a loading tab (if using a wood gun). This simple device makes things much easier by allowing you to first hip load the band to the loading tab and then raise the butt to your chest for the final pull. Although it’s a two-step process, it can be done quickly and will feel much easier. 4) If your bands are still too hard to load, use three longer bands. 5) Work out, lift weights, work on core and upper body. Try bench presses, seated rows, bent over rows, pushups and pull-ups. Bands and dumbbells can be incorporated into your workout routine, whether at the gym or home. If you want to see a band loading video, check out Coastal Angler online. And remember—you can accomplish anything you set your mind to! he action in northwest Costa Rica has once again been off the charts as FishingNosara celebrates its 10th season of charter fishing. All five boats are in the water and scoring big for their clients, with 51 trips logged in November. Big dorados are the staple catch this time of year, but it was a welcome surprise to see swarms of billfish in the mix. The team nabbed 12 marlin releases, 24 sailfish releases, 217 dorados, and five roosterfish releases. One of these roosters was a nearworld-record at 72 pounds. On Nov. 19, Capt. Alex on the Harvester posted the best trip of the month with Terry and Julie Edwards’ group. They loaded up the trophy case with excellent releases. A 300-plus-pound blue marlin was the headliner of the trip for these Texas anglers, and shortly after that battle, the 32-foot mega panga nabbed a wonderful sailfish release. Team Edwards came inshore to finish the day, and saved the best for last… that massive 72-pound roosterfish.
2
The IGFA All-Tackle Record for roosterfish is 114 pounds, and the second-place fish is 85 pounds. This fish caught by the Harvester wasn’t far off the second place catch. Most impressively, the above-mentioned IGFA record catches were posted in 1960 and 1954 respectively. This size of roosterfish has not been seen in more than five decades. On the same day, other members of Julie Edwards’ family had a big time on the 32-foot Discoverer with a blue marlin release of their own. Capt. Carlos estimated this fish at 250 pounds upon release. Also in November, FishingNosara Hall of Famer Bill Harris took to the 28-foot bar-room brawler Explorer and opened up her season with a billfish grand slam! A big blue marlin was the highlight of the morning, and it was followed by a late-day striped marlin. Bill nabbed the first marlin, and Mark Scott scored the second. A nice Pacific sailfish caught by Diane Turner completed the grand slam for these Tampa, Fla.based anglers. They didn’t go home empty handed, either, thanks to five big tasty dorado catches spread throughout the day. On the Discoverer, the team of Eli Bedran, Andrew Lipps, Kelsey Harry and Laurie Harry report a fantastic blue marlin release, the first of the year for the big battleship, plus six lovely dorados. John Purdy, John Van Diver, Mike Pickelsimer and Dale McElroy fished in early November and reported 11 sweet dorados on ice. The Harvester has been itching for action, and found what she was looking for as these monsters topped out at 60 pounds. The action was so hot that Capt. Alex chose to release the biggest cows so as not to hurt the stocks. Naturally, we have full reports of all these catches and more archived at Blog.FishingNosara.com, including videos. January and February will be super-busy and the spring months are already filling up fast. Get your plans together so we can secure your fishing adventure with FishingNosara, some of the best sportfishing in Costa Rica.

oel’s Distributing in south Florida has reached a milestone—40 years in business. Not many operations can make that claim, and so a look down memory lane seems appropriate. Tom Noel, aka Paddleboat Tom, moved to Florida from Michigan in 1979. He closed his grocery store, loaded a pickup truck with three paddleboats, his wife Joy, two sons, a daughter and the family dog and headed south. Tom set up shop in his garage in their Lake Clarke Shores home. After a few years, Joy put her foot down and insisted that he find a warehouse. Tom rented a space next to their current location, just off Forest Hill Blvd in West Palm Beach. A couple of years later he bought the 3,000 square-foot warehouse. Tom’s sons Rob and Tom are also involved with the business. Noel’s Distributing sells safety equipment, fire extinguishers, flares, rope, anchors and a warehouse full of other boating supplies to their clients, predominately in the Keys, along the east coast and in central Florida. They will ship anywhere. Many of their clients search them out for their custom rope splicing and then discover the realm of equipment they carry. If you are looking for anything marine related, it’s worth a phone call. They are generally a better value than the larger chain stores. Tom and his sons are very thankful for their longtime clients. Check out Noel’s Distributing at noeldistributing.com or give them a call at (561) 585-2387.

ahoo Smackdown X, hosted by the historic Bimini Big Game Club Resort and Marina on Nov. 8-12, saw 23 boats competing for more than $25,000 in cash and prizes. Out of the 23 competing boats, 22 teams landed fish, bringing 152 wahoo to the scales in the process. Team Who’s Your Daddy took top team honors with 16 fish weighing a total of 231.5 pounds and took home $15,000 in cash winnings. Second place was Team Blitzsea, which earned $7,500 in cash for their 21 fish and a total catch weight of 206.4 pounds. Team Murderize, out of Freeport, Grand Bahama, finished third, taking home $2,500 in cash winnings for a catch of 11 fish with a total catch weight of 193.6 pounds. Team Little Giant caught the largest wahoo of the tournament at 50.7 pounds. Tournament festivities included live local entertainment nightly, a cocktail reception poolside for the captains’ meeting, a cookout on day one of the tournament, and a closing awards party on the great lawn, featuring a buffet, live entertainment and a full open bar. Sponsors for this year’s tournament include American Beverage Marketers (www.masterofmixes.com) as the Title Sponsor, Bahamian Brewery and Beverage (Sands), artist David Dunleavy, Tropic Ocean Airways, Caza Offshore, Live Wire Tackle, Flanigan’s, CS Custom Lures and Bimini Big Game Club. With more than 50-record-setting catches in the waters around the island, Bimini has often been referred to as the Sport Fishing Capital of the World. The Big Game Club opened for business in 1947. Owner Neville Stewart saw the promise and allure of fishing and personally developed and encouraged tournaments. He sold his interest to Bacardi, which over 30 years grew the tradition with many memorable tournaments. The current owners, the Southern California-based Hankey Group, put the iconic fishing resort back in play in 2010 and are completing a multi-million-dollar renovation, that includes numerous capital improvements to the rooms, restaurant and lounge, landscaping, new pool and a renovated 75 slip marina, including docks and seawall.

Inshore & Offshore Opportunities
by Capt. Terry Fisher
very month of every year will present different challenges to E all anglers. This year should be no different from the previous year, in regards to knowing when or where to go in quest of a particular species. Each year at this time, I present my views on what I believe will hold true for the new calendar year as to what species is best to target and during which months (on a ‘quarterly’ basis) as follows:
JANUARY- MARCH Sheepshead will lead the charge as the bigger fish migrate from the gulf waters and infiltrate docks, seawalls and mangroves. They will be found in each and every ‘PASS’ (Redfish, Captiva and Boca Grande) as well as creek mouths and back waters with structure, especially those areas with old piles and rocks. I fish for them with shrimp tails while periodically hurling the heads for chum. Use small #1 or # 2 size bait hooks. Snook is a year around favorite of mine and they have moved from the beaches to the canals and creek mouths. Artificial baits such as ‘twitchbait’ (MR 19 MirrOLure); Shallow running swim or ‘crank’ baits; weedless soft plastics or topwater plugs (Heddon Spook Jr.) will all produce. Preferred live baits are sardines, herring, pinfish, mullets and big shrimps. Jack Crevalle will prevail in canals and creeks. The will be spotted busting glass minnows at the surface. Almost any artificial presentation will work when they are feeding. Use Sardines or shrimp for live bait presentations. Spanish Mackerel will begin their migration southward. Artificial baits such as gold and silver spoons, Gotcha Lures for good action. Use wire leaders to prevent cutoffs. Watch for diving birds and usually the mackerel will be a part of the action together with Lady Fish. Grouper/Snapper move closer to inshore as water temperature cools. Causeway, Edison, Helens, Pace and other well know reefs will hold fish. Shrimp, pinfish, sardines and squid are my baits of choice. APRIL-JUNE Seatrout will inhabit grass flats in 3’ to 6’ of water. Look for murky green color indicating sea grasses. Larger seatrout will be more prevalent during the early spring month (April). Artificial baits of all types will work. Also, fish shrimp under a cork (weighted or free-lined) suspended above the seabed. Tarpon will begin their migration from the southern waters of Mexico. Look for them off Ft. Myers Beach and the beaches of the outer islands of Sanibel, Captiva, Cayo Costa. Fish sardines, threadfins, mullets or big pinfish under a cork or balloon for best results. Anchor up ahead of their paths. Snook will begin to move from the canals and creeks to the beaches and passes. Redfish become more plentiful and larger inshore with higher tides and stronger currents. Look for them around oyster beds and mangrove islands on incoming tides. Big shrimp, cut
Pinfish, mullet and crabs are all great baits to use fished on the seabed or suspended under a popping cork. Mangrove Snapper are an inshore favorite this time of year. They are very tasty. Live cut shrimp on small circle hook placed under docks and around mangroves should yield plenty, for a nice meal. Triple Tail/King Mackerel/Cobia/Permit offshore may all join the party as waters warm. Trolling artificial lures for mackerel. Try big shrimp for tripletail and cobia. Mackerel and cobia will likely be caught while fishing for snapper on the reefs mentioned above. JULY-SEPTEMBER Redfish become the predominant fish. The bigger ones (around September time frame) are known as ‘Bull Reds’. Warmer water triggers their migratory senses to move closer inshore. High tides, plenty of food and protection give them the ability to eat, spawn and fatten up for their long winter offshore. They will be found in schools. They love artificial gold spoons and soft weedless plastics. Live shrimp, pinfish and crab are great baits to use in back country locations off of oyster shoals and around mangrove islands. Snook will be found in the same locations as redfish during this time of year. While targeting redfish, one will likely catch snook on the same presentations used for the redfish. Seatrout will remain active, but will be smaller in size. Look for the larger ones in the potholes in the shallower waters of Pine Island Sound and Tarpon Bay. Grouper/Snapper will require going further offshore to find. The bigger ones will hold in 45’ to 90’ of water. Permit are fighting machines and will show up on the reefs. Live crab is my bait of choice when I know Permit is around. OCTOBER-DECEMBER Redfishing may be at its finest early on this ‘quarter’. However, depending on the water temperatures, it will likely be the ‘beginning of the end’ for the larger Bull Reds. Usually, the month of October is the best and things will begin winding down sometime in November, when cooler water temperatures move the schooling fish offshore. Black Drum is a cousin to the redfish and a powerful foe. They are more of a cooler water species and will be caught all winter long in deep holes, under docks and rock structures, including bridge piles. I have good luck using large live shrimps for these guys. Seatrout are here year around and are usually plentiful to catch and release but not as big during the last ‘quarter’ of the year. Pompano/Spanish Mackerel will, for the most part, be bycatches while targeting seatrout. These species are migratory and will show up from time to time throughout the year. s we enter the middle of our winter season, wind and low water will be a constant. As they’re tolerant to cooler conditions, I’ll concentrate on spotted sea trout and redfish. I also want to work the beginning of an incoming tide. In addition, I’ll split my time working sand holes on open grass flats and making my way back up back country creek systems. Up these creek systems, I like dead end coves covered with sand bottom. After a couple cool months, these creeks are a natural transition area for our game fish, as they’ll move up into these areas to warm up on the shallow sandy bottom. Multiple months of cool weather is also why I also like the early incoming tide. Bait has been scarce for long enough that these game fish will begin looking with some urgency. They feel the tide instantly and begin working up the creek or flat rushing to get a shot at what was unobtainable on low water. They know their chances are best early before the prey has a chance to vanish. Additionally, I’ll downsize my baits. Clouser deep minnows work well over the sand holes out on the grass flats and small baitfish patterns are good up the backcountry creeks. Out of
the wind, I prefer a seven-weight. However, if I’m out on an open flat in the wind, I like the punch a nine-weight delivers. A floating line is a good all around choice. The Placida ramp at Boca Grande and Ponce Park ramp in Punta Gorda provide good access to backcountry creek systems. From Placida, Bull Bay between Gasparilla Sound and Turtle Bay has lots of room to explore. From Ponce Park, south along the east side from Alligator Creek to Pirate Harbor is full of small creek systems. My favorite open grass flats contain a mix of sand and healthy turtle grass. Game fish like to hold on the grass edges that they use as ambush points. Mostly, they’re full of spotted sea trout; but, on a low incoming tide these flats provide a good opportunity to target tailing redfish. They’re being opportunistic just like the fishery in the creek systems. Pine Island and Gasparilla Sound as well as Lemon Bay are worth a look. In the harbor, pompano can be found on the hard bottom just off Cape Haze Point. Also, keep an eye on your boat wake as you’re running outside the bar along the west wall. Sheepshead are everywhere and can be fished from land as well as boat. On land, the Placida trestle is very popular. Every dock, pier, underwater structure, and artificial reef will hold sheepshead. Until next month, good tides. Captain Michael Manis is a U.S.G.C. Licensed captain and has been teaching the sport of fly and light tackle angling since 2002. He lives in Punta Gorda, Florida and can be reached at www.puntagordaflycharters.com.

have outgrown our little outside palapa office at the docks in town and have become the premier outfitter for this area. We are conveniently located just before the bridge in Matlacha and have a beach front launch with a retail store, as well as a host of guides and multiple rental programs to fit almost everyone’s needs. If all you need is a place to launch your own kayak into “paradise” or you have a party of fifteen and they all need to rent, we’ve got you covered. The Eco guided trips we offer are led by Florida Master Naturalists and are ACA Certified Kayak/ SUP instructors. Our kayak fishing instructors are not just guides, but are dedicated to teaching our customers the when, where, and how that is so important to understanding this fishery. As a visitor many years ago I was struggling to get a handle on the particulars that define fishing in SWFL and though I would have eventually found my way, it was only after hiring a local guide that my catching really escalated. We will focus our trips on an individual’s desire to learn certain aspects, including when and where to present live bait and how best to hook it or if you are trying to learn more about artificial lures, which are the most productive, how to present the cadence that is so important and what colors work best and when. Seasonally, we have certain species that are more prevalent during the “winter” verses spring, summer or fall. All the big predators like Snook, Redfish, Tarpon and the tasty Spotted Sea Trout can be found here year round, as well as a number of other species, but will require focused effort to find and hook! Most of you who are already kayak fishing know that as a kayaker you need to be able to catch fish relatively close to launch, although the new peddle driven crafts may allow you to go farther in less time. The boating channels that serve Matlacha are virtual highways for fish and allow them easy access to bait. Gulf Coast Kayak’s launch is so well-suited to fishing that within one mile of our beachfront you can chase snook around dock structures, find tailing redfish in a foot of water or relax on a trout flat that could keep you busy all morning long.

he store next to us moved and we took over an extra 1780 sq. ft. bringing us to almost 4000 sf of fishing tackle. Then we found an old storage area outside with a covered roof, so we built a seminar area with benches and tables, so you have a place for your drink, writing notes, and just makes it all the more comfortable. With all the extra space we have a Rod and Reel Room with 14 feet of wonderful ceiling height, after 34 years of 8’3” ceiling this is a god-send wonderful thing. I bought a couple 12- and 13-foot surf rods, just because I could stand them up. Tackle boxes and casting nets have a room and, I guess embarrassing yet true, we have built a boutique room with shirt and hats and stuff. Ouch that one hurt. In the main room there are big racks full of rod and reel combos from $19.99 and up to whatever you want to spend. The hard part to coming to terms with is now I am a store clerk and no longer a construction worker. I hope you will stop by and just check out all the new toys. The reason this was possible was great friends and the people who work here. After a couple of weeks going every day, 7 days a week, month after month, I have not been the easiest person to be around and “Thank You” to everyone for putting up with it all. Just to mention a bit about fishing, it has and continues to be a pretty darn good year for fishing. Now it is true most days it is better to be lucky than good, but in the Gulf we’re seeing some of the best snapper and grunt fishing in years! If you are not having that kind of luck, try live shrimp on a 3/0 circle hook, lighten up your rod to a 12 to 20-lb class and 30-lb braid and a 2 once sinker. In the Harbor and sounds there are a ton of trout and true to this time of year, there are a lot of smaller ones. Switch to a TT-18 MirrOlure. Cast it out and let it sink for 3 seconds then slow-twitch it back in. The slow-twitch and being a bit deeper will attract the larger trout. The other lure which I use for larger trout is the Rapala sub-walk in the OG color; this lure you walk the dog under water, not fast, a steady pace, bam big trout. There are also a bunch of largemouth bass fishing going on; I guess the red tide scared a lot of people to have rediscovered bass fishing, whether above the Franklin Locks or the Northport canal systems where the bite is on.

The Great Calusa Blueway
by Mike Hammond
ne of the many things about O the Calusa Blueway that I love is the variety of access and
easy, convenient launches with great facilities. They are perfect when I am with the whole family. Sometimes if you are willing to take a little hike and maybe get temporarily rerouted as you walk through mangroves, then the reward is access to water and fish that people rarely get to see. One of these launches is Annie’s Creek in Charlotte Harbor Preserve State Park, which is just northwest of Cape Coral. The Calusa Blueway sign is posted on a kiosk along Old Burnt Store Marina Road just north of Annie’s Creek, but I prefer to access the preserve about 200 yards south at Gate 8. The northern gate leads to a small opening in the mangroves just 450 feet away. The creek is very narrow and windy here, making it difficult for longer paddlecraft to navigate. On a low tide, there is almost no water. At Gate 8 you will have a quarter-mile walk to the primitive launch, but it is much easier to paddle once you hit the water. You can remain back in the mangrove maze or head out to Charlotte Harbor. There are plenty of snook, snapper and other fish in Annie’s Creek and it is protected from the wind and powerboats. A favorite fishing spot for many anglers called “the bar” is just a few hundred yards from the mouth of the creek. It is well worth the effort if the conditions are right. Anglers using pedal craft will have to wait to lower their fins until getting out to deeper water. Even on a high tide, the creek has shallow areas. A cart is a must-have to get heavy sit-on tops to the launch. If you are willing to put in a little work and have a sense of adventure, the Annie’s Creek launches can put you on fish that may not have seen another angler in weeks.

Outdoor Opportunities by Wayne Nichols inally, some cooler weather lately down here in SoFlo! OK, FNorth so it’s nothing compared to the northern states, or even Florida, but if I’ve gotta put on my insulated flip flops
for a hunt then it’s officially winter to me. An important part of what we do is land management on private lands for ranchers, farmers, and citrus growers. Hogs, deer, turkey, and gators is the main focus. All too often we hear hunters complain of not having any meat, letting small bucks walk to mature, and afraid to shoot a doe because “does bring in bucks”....in a word, wrong. Having too many doe on your property is about the worst thing you can have going against you. Bucks seek out doe to breed and chase/spar/fight with other bucks for dominance. If he doesn’t have to actively look for a doe and there’s plenty of food around, well, he won’t...and mature bucks aren’t exactly known for being daytime active with temps down here. Culling your doe population is a good thing, maybe the best thing you can do on your property. Besides improving herd health and overall genetics, it makes mature bucks actively seek out doe for breeding in daylight hours, when doe are more active in morning and afternoons. Ratio numbers vary according to who you ask. Some experts say 1:1 ratio, some say 2:1, 3:1... never ending debate there. Personally I like about a 3:1 doe to buck ratio. As long as you’re willing to harvest doe, keeps their numbers in check and meat in the freezer. I personally haven’t really “hunted” for years, as much as I love it and have a passion for it, I simply enjoy taking others more than I care about myself killing an animal, and it’d be hard for me to improve on what I’ve taken over the years with the only exception being some of the exotics free-roaming now due to hurricane Charlie, such as Axis deer (picture red deer with spots, not a fawn) which are by far the best eating deer I’ve ever had! My family and friends’ hunts are what I really look forward to each season. This year’s meat hunts are pictured this month with my wife and kids, plus a few friends, quality time that’s priceless. With hunting season winding down in SoFlo, we’ll turn our focus to hogs the next few months anticipating Spring Osceola turkey season. If you’d like any info on our land management programs or hunts give us a call, 863-9907650. Y’all stay safe out there and take a kid hunting or fishing anytime you can.
If you have any questions about hunting down here, need information on booking a hunt or would like to know more about what we offer, give me a call anytime at 863-990-7650. I’m heading back in the woods now y’all stay safe and remember to take a kid hunting or fishing anytime you get a chance! 16 FORT MYERS JANUARY 2019 | COASTALANGLERMAG.COM/FORT-MYERS/

Peace RiverCharlotte Harbor
by Capt. Dave Stephens
appy New Year fellow anglers, it’s January. Well our first H major cold front has made its way into Southwest Florida. The water temps have dropped; cooler waters don’t mean the
fish stop eating, it just means you have to approach your day a little different. During these colder days, the majority of our game fish seek out warmer deeper waters. So, what this means is during these cooler days you will have to focus on deeper water for fish. I know our coast isn’t known for deep water, but sometimes a few feet make a big difference. Also, the type of bottom where you’re trying to locate fish can make a big difference. As these cool fronts keeping moving through our area it will have our fish on the move. All those deep points and pot holes that you know about could be gold mines. The one thing you need to do is slow down on your approach. Instead of these places holding snook, chances are they will have trout and sheepshead. As these first fronts pass, grab a few dozen shrimp from your local tackle shop, also don’t forget a pack of jig heads. If you hit a couple spots that just are not holding any fish, don’t give up. This is the time of year that fish are on the move. Your next hole could be loaded. In a month or so, our fish will adjust to the cooler waters and become much easier to pattern. I have also started to see some good sheepshead starting to school up. This is the time of year when these guys are spawning. For the new anglers to our area, don’t confuse these guys with the freshwater species. Actually, the saltwater sheepshead belongs
in the porgy family, mainly feeds on a crustacean diet, and is great table fare. Look for these guys around structure, such as docks and rocky seawalls. I recommend using a smaller hook, like a #1. Shrimp is a great bait, but if your local shop has fiddler crabs, they can’t resist them. I also recommend using enough weight to contact the bottom. This time of year is a transition period for our fishery, so it can be a little tough. The main thing you need to remember is to slow down your approach. I also recommend doing some scouting, as this time of year our tides are a lot lower, so it’s a perfect time to go locate some deeper holes. Transition times can be some of the toughest, you just need to put some time in. I promise it will be rewarded.

Gulf Red Snapper Meetings Slated FWC photo by Allen Peirce he Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council is holding public hearings and a webinar to solicit public comments on Draft Amendment 50—State Management of Recreational Red Snapper. This amendment would, if approved, allow state management in future years and would provide flexibility to the Gulf states to set the recreational red snapper fishing season and potentially other management measures. To provide additional opportunities for the public to comment on this proposal, FWC is also holding public workshops on state management of Gulf red snapper. Dates and locations for the meetings are as follows (unless noted below, all meetings are from 6-9 p.m. local time): • Jan. 7 – Fort Myers: Hyatt Place Fort Myers at the Forum, 2600 Champion Ring Road. • Jan. 8 – Saint Petersburg: Hilton St. Pete Carillon Park, 950 Lake Carillon Drive. • Jan. 15 – Key West: Harvey Government Center, 1200 Truman Ave., 2nd Floor; *Hosted by FWC. • Jan. 17 – Webinar: https://attendee.gotowebinar.com/register/2288573373994739724. • Jan. 23 – Tallahassee: Farris Bryant Building, 620 S. FRESHWATER
Since 2015, Frabill has continued to set the quiet standard in bucket conversion. The Frabill Whisper Quiet Aerator system is a portable, aeration design that provides the utmost discretion when fishing with live bait. Constructed with 75 years of experience, the Whisper Drive Aeration Motor has been specifically designed and tested to keep saltwater baitfish and crustaceans healthy and active while emitting minimal sound. With a couple of batteries, the Whisper Quiet Aerator converts any size cooler or bucket into an oxygen-rich livewell. Frabill’s top-of-the-line signature yellow air stone creates enough bubbles to effectively aerate up to 15 gallons of water. As a result of its over-engineered rugged design, Frabill’s Whisper Quiet Aerator has a long shelf life. The aeration system includes premium water-resistant internal parts that help prevent corrosion and won’t let an angler down. Never be surprised by battery rot again.

Surprising Winter is the Best Planting Time
I am often asked when is the best time to plant fruiting plants. My answer is usually the same; the best time is 20 years ago or today. The second best time to plant is during the winter months. Plants are dormant, and can be easily shipped and planted with no stress on the plant because there is not a lot of maintenance once the plant or tree has been planted. Simply dig a good hole, water thoroughly
at planting, and take the rest of the winter off. Even though there are no signs of growth above ground, the root systems will have time to get adjusted to their new location and begin to initiate new root growth. There are plenty of advantages of growing your own edibles. First of all, you know what has been done over the course of the growing season from a chemical stand point. Second, the fruit just taste
better coming out of your home orchard versus buying fruit from the grocers that have little to no flavors. Thirdly, it is good for your soul and you will feel more connected to the environment and nature. Whether it is an apple tree, muscadine vine or a blueberry bush; now is the time to plant. Let’s Grow Together. Greg Ison, Ison’s Nursery and Vineyards, 800733-0324, www.isons.com
